An expression of Dutch Courage fuelled with Indonesian spirit including a spice-forward combination of ‘Schiedam’ gin botanicals like juniper, fennel seeds, coriander and rose hips combined with traditional Indonesian spices from grandfather Jacobus ‘Bobby’ Alfons’ Pinang Raci recipe. These include lemongrass, cloves, cinnamon, and cubeb peppers. Distilled from a malt base, there are no other additives or extractions. 38% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Clear color. Aromas and flavors of orange oil, sweet barley mash, juniper berries, and anise with a satiny, crisp, dryish medium body and an elegant, medium-length finish with suggestions of orange marmalade, lemon pepper, rosemary, and witch hazel. Toasted bread and herbal spice followed by hints of fruit make for a well balanced Genever that would make a wide variety of cocktails. 87 points - tastings.com

    Doorly's 12 Year Old Rum (700ml)
    BARBADOS
    $130. 00
    Bottle
    $1560.00 Dozen
    ABV: 43%
Launched in 2015, Doorly's 12 Year Old is considered by many to be the new top of the line for the brand. Previously exclusive to the Foursquare distillery 'cellar door' in Barbados, like others in the range, it comes in that classic bulbed, stumpy bottle featuring a bird on the label, this time it's a Spinx Macaw - thought to be extinct. The rum is a combination of pot and column still rums, approximately 90% of which was aged for twelve years in x Bourbon barrels, with the remainder matured for twelve years in Madeira casks before being blended together. The consensus is it's another solid result from the talented Richard Searle - the only downside being the ABV could have been a little higher.

Other reviews... In the bottle, the Doorly’s 12 has an inviting dark mahogany hue. The nose is subtle, primarily vanilla and oak. Much like the first sip of a fine Scotch, the Doorly’s 12 immediately lets you know you’re tasting something exceptional. Oak, vanilla, fruit, and spice are in ideal harmony -- all present but none dominating, and the finish lingers for quite a while. The finish is pleasing, dry and free of any sugar like you may find in many “premium” rums at a much higher price. The flavors continue to evolve the longer it spends breathing, so take your time with it. This is a rum that you’ll want to enjoy neat while pondering how you might sneak it into a fancy whiskey tasting lineup to see who you can fool. The only “complaint” is that this should be at a slightly higher proof." 90 points - distiller.com

What I like about Doorly’s 12 is that it is noticeably different to Rum Sixty Six. It is slightly drier, more oaked and not as sweet as that rum or the Port Cask Finish. It also should be noted the [fair] price of these rums.... If you are fan of Bajan style rum, then for me any offering from the Foursquare Distillery is well worth investing in. They simply do not make bad rum. This rum offers all the complexity a good aged rum should offer to the sipper. As usual it is expertly blended and it shows yet again that rum can be produced, which is “smooth” and doesn’t exhibit any notably strong alcohol notes, without loading it with sugar and other additives. 4.5 stars - thefatrumpirate.com

1792 Bottled In Bond Vol.II Single Barrel Bourbon Whiskey (750ml) - Whiskey Hunt Australia Exclusive - Retail Partner Release
    Kentucky, UNITED STATES
    $150. 00
    Bottle
    $1800.00 Dozen
    ABV: 50%

For this barrel selection, WHA called in some of the most experienced whiskey folks they know - their six retail partners around Australia. Samples were distributed with simple instructions: Give each example a rating along with your tasting notes. WHA tallied up the scores and the result was this 1792 Bottled in Bond Bourbon single barrel pick. American whiskey boffins will already know that in 1897, the Bottled-in-Bond Act revolutionized the quality of American whiskey, requiring that it be a product of the grain of a single season, made by one distiller at a single distillery and aged in a federal government-bonded warehouse. The act came as a response to the widespread adulteration in American whiskey around the late 19th century. It was an attempt by the federal government to act as a guarantor of the spirit's authenticity. Carrying on that tradition, barrel # 8175 was filled on the 10/10/14 and bottled on the 1/6/23 making it eight years and eight months old with a yield of 192 bottles for Australia only. The group tasting notes include aromas and flavours of white chocolate, cherry strudel, light brown sugar, coconut husk, baking spice, banana bread, nutmeg, vanilla, light oak & cherry with a finish of light oak and brown lingering sugars. 50% Alc./Vol.

1800 is a 100% Agave Tequila. To understand how this distinguishes it from other Tequila, it is necessary to know something of the process by which tequila is produced. Although Mexico is famed as the land of the cactus, Tequila is in fact distilled from the fermented juice of the Agave Plant, (not a cactus) otherwise known as the ‘Century plant.’ The Agave plant resembles an unripe, oversized pineapple or spiked cactus which shoots a giant blossom that can take up to twelve years to produce. At maturity, it stands about 5 feet high, is bluish green in colour and has a heart or ‘pina’ . It is these hearts which are actually used in the distillation process, the sweet juice extracted by compression, steaming and washing prior to fermentation & distillation.

The fermentation stage determines whether the final product will be 100 percent agave or mixed ("mixto"). The highest-quality Tequila is made using only fermented agave juice mixed with some water. Mixto however, is made by fermenting and then distilling a mix of agave juice and other sugars, usually cane sugar with water. Mixtos made and bottled in Mexico can contain up to 40% alcohol derived from other sugars. Mixtos that have been shipped in bulk for bottling overseas may have the agave content further reduced to 51% by the foreign bottler. Mexican law states that all 100% agave or aged Tequila must be bottled in Mexico. 100 percent agave Tequilas are clearly labelled as such. Anything else is classified as a Mixto Tequila, however the term is seldom used on bottle labels.

1800 is today the number one selling aged super premium tequila in America. Rested in French oak casks to create a distinctive smoothness, it boasts an exceptional mellowness making it the ultimate shot.

Other reviews... The first whiffs reveal plump, toffee-caramel notes underpinned by an asparagus-like agave aroma; aeration unearths nuances of fennel, white pepper, sage and rosemary—a complex and engaging bouquet. Palate entry is vegetal, green and off-dry; at midpalate the flavor profile turns sweet and sour, fruity and oaky. Concludes on a bittersweet note that somehow closes the circle on the journey. 90-95 points - wineenthusiast.com

Tasting note: Gold colour with a copper hue. Moderately full-bodied. The nose displays a wonderful combination of herbaceous agave, apples, figs and mellow oak. Bold, round mouth feel. The palate is smooth, slightly sweet with powerful spirit - though in balance - followed by a pungent backdrop of earth, spice and oak. Very warm spirit power wave finishing rich and spicy. A tequila to be enjoyed in the traditional fashion: shot glass, salt and lime. 38% alc./vol.

Other reviews... The initial aroma is of black pepper and steamed broccoli. Following aeration, a bouquet of succulent scents of Brazil nuts, egg cream and light oak resin appear. An oily flavor of bacon is apparent at palate entry; at midpalate the pepper returns with added tastes of spinach, sage and butter. Finishes elegantly yet zestily as the pepper comes to the fore. 23rd Street Distillery Yuzu Gin (700ml)
    Renmark, South Australia, AUSTRALIA
    $82. 99
    Bottle
    $995.88 Dozen
    ABV: 43%

23rd Street's entry into the citrus gin segment features the trending Yuzu fruit, also the inspiration for several Japanese gins. The aim is to retain its delicious sweet, sour and bitter flavours in harmony with the freshness of juniper. In this example, fruit is gathered from a single Riverland orchard. Both highly fragrant Yuzu and Buddha's Hand fruit are incorporated whole, together with hand-peeled rind from Cara Cara and Blood Oranges. Added to the mix are juniper, chamomile and coriander plus Australian natives like cinnamon myrtle, pink peppercorn and strawberry gum. Suitably, the Artwork for this limited edition was created by local South Australian Artist, Claire Ishino. The inspiration being Japanese sunsets blending with the Australian landscape, and of course the Riverland Yuzu fruit. It's a simple but refreshingly vibrant spirit with a nice citrus tang and a spicy finish that will suit thirst-quenching G&Ts or enjoying straight up over ice. Due the natural oils, it may turn slightly cloudy when mixed. 43% Alc./Vol.

The floral soft nose accents lemon myrtle and home made lemonade. The palate is light and breezy with lime and low-key juniper, ending mildly peppery, lemony and medium fresh. Sensitive to pH, so the colour will change if you add tonic or lemon. 40% Alc./Vol.

23rd Street Distillery Hybrid Whisky (700ml)

    $86. 99
    Bottle
    $1043.88 Dozen
    ABV: 42.3%
An experiment in blending that references a practise common to the Japanese industry. 'Hybrid' is apt: Head distiller, Graham Buller imported prime barrels of Scotch whisky (average 5 years old) and American Bourbon (2 years old) with the intent of creating his perfect whisky. Following a blending period, the final result was finished in x Bourbon barrels.

Tasting note: Bright gold. Slightly, acidic / alcoholic lift to the opening inhalations. A few minutes softens the aroma introducing vanilla and a fruity edge - baked apple? Wine soaked pears? Mildly oily entry develops with a cream-textured, vanilla, fruity, honied malt profile and excellent palate length. Light grassiness at the finish. Concludes gently woody, peppery, beeswaxy. A confident, clean, lighter bodied whisky that's easy to like. 42.3% Alc./Vol.

23rd Street Distillery Single Malt Australian Whisky (700ml)
    Renmark, South Australia, AUSTRALIA
    $115. 00
    Bottle
    $1380.00 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

There have been several iterations of 23rd Street's single malt, with different labels and ABVs, however this one now looks to be settled as a core range release. The large site housing the 23rd Street Distillery in Renmark was first built in 1914 by Chateau Tanunda, a major brandy producer, but was closed in 2004 until Bickfords Australia along with sister company Vok Beverages invested 6.6 million in the new venture, with help from a government grant. Initially, brandy-focused, vodka and a range of gins are also on offer. Distillate is derived from two pot stills built by Adelaide manufacturers H. Jennings in the 1950s. For the whiskies, x-Bourbon maturations are currently preferred.

Notes from the producers... Elegant aromas of toffee, lifted fruit and delicate vanillin oak trail into an evocative hint of wine cellar. The palate is full and lightly sweet, with citrus and apricot, bedtime malted milk, and a finish of butterscotch oak and lingering warmth. Produced from Kangaroo Island barley and matured in x-Bourbon casks. 46% Alc./Vol.

43% batch tasted... Brilliant gold. Rich, rounded aromas include gobstopper, ripe peach and banana over light vanilla and wood spice. Super pure with a deliciously fruity, off-dry delivery hinting at kumquat, pepper, cocoa and pencil shavings with a late rush of fig and banana confectionary before the oak closes in. Fruity and flavoursome. 91 points

    ABV: 40%
Twenty Third Street Distillery is the new incarnation of a century-old landmark at Renmark, in South Australia’s Riverland. Originally built by Chateau Tanunda in 1914 to take advantage of burgeoning local grape harvests, the distillery had a roller-coaster history, surviving a series of takeovers and mergers until it ceased production in 2002.

When a pair of disused, South Australian-built copper pot stills were found at Berri Estate, a small team became determined to bring them back to life. The 7,500 litre capacity stills had their own story to tell, being x Hardy’s - at one stage responsible for producing the iconic Black Bottle brandy. Years of hard work running restorations and relocations has found these antiques once again fully operational at the original 23rd St premises producing brandy, whisky and gin.

Tasting note: Made using ten botanicals including locally grown mandarines. Dazzling clarity with a brilliant silvery blush. Nosing finds medium-fresh aromas of juniper, lemon gelato, peppercorns and dried herbs. A light bodied, soft-textured gin with brisk flavours of piney-juniper, citrus peel, white pepper, liquorice root and suggestions of lime juice in the aftertaste. Clean but short. Relaxed easy drinking. 40% Alc./Vol.

    South Australia, AUSTRALIA
    $99. 99
    Bottle
    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

36 Short's latest single malt is created in the same way as their 45% ABV expression, minus the red wine cask finishing: Australian malted barley, water from an aquifer underneath the distillery and maturation in locally sourced, shaved and charred American oak barrels is followed by further resting in x Bourbon barrels to add complexity and fruity notes. The result is a modern yet balanced whisky with a well-rounded, light-weight feel bottled at an accessible 40% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the producers... Colour: Deep gold autumn barley. Nose: Sweet and fruity on the nose, with tart lime marmalade notes. A faint aroma of fresh cut pine and tropical fruit adds a delicate malt finish. Taste: A warm roundness encompassing the whisky with character of a tangy dried fruit medley. A hint of vanilla bean, taking you on a long, sweet fruity journey. Finish: A beautiful long finish with a taste of dried mixed fruit. Adelaide brothers, Jon and Con Lioulios own and run Thirty Six Short Distillery from Virginia in South Australia, where they recently launched Australia's first Rakia - partly as a tribute to their late Macedonian father, Pando whose dream was to distil traditional Rakia. The venture is actually named after Pando’s suit size, '36 Short'. A 1200 litre copper pot still also bears his name. The brother's first single malt was released in late 2021, cut back with water sourced from an aquifer that runs directly underneath the distillery. The barrels are locally sourced, x-Shiraz, shaven and charred American oak barrels. This initial maturation is followed by further resting in x Bourbon barrels to add fruity notes, before the liquid is finally returned to the Shiraz casks for a finishing. Advanced in colour, it feels more like a sherry matured Scottish malt than a warm climate Australian whisky. Aromas of oak shavings, pepper, cocoa and a dry nuttiness confirm the wine character, as does the full-bodied delivery: Dried fruits come through at the middle; Cherry ripe chocolate leads the finish where sweeter Bourbon-like notes converge over the wood spices. Even if the oak is a bit overdone, especially after air contact, it's an undeniable success for a first edition. 45% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the producers... Lingering with notes of apricot and peaches with a warming finish.

    42 Below Vodka (700ml)
    Auckland, NEW ZEALAND
    $62. 99
    Bottle
    $755.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

A New Zealand spirit which began as a hobby conceived in a garage on a few misspent weekends, 42 BELOW was the brainchild of an ex-advertising man who sought to harness New Zealand’s global reputation for cleanliness and freshness, and encapsulate this in a vodka with the same qualities.

Made in the Scandinavian style, 42 Below is distilled for purity rather than over powering flavour. However, there is still the weight associated with Slavic spirits, but without the polarising heat. The raw material is wheat from the Canterbury Plains, which is then distilled twice, before being ‘washed’ with spring water, achieving a saturation level that brings a level of purity and freshness to the spirit. 42 BELOW is then distilled a third time, before being charged with charcoal to remove any last impurities and filtered ready for dilution with spring water. All vodkas, regardless of the quality attained in the distillation, will stand and fall on the water source, which contributes so much to the finished product. In this sense, 42 BELOW, like Grey Goose, is distinguished by a water source of astonishing quality. The vodka is diluted with water which springs from deep beneath the volcanic plateau in the centre of New Zealand’s North Island. This spring has been graded 'Aa' by W.H.O., the global body responsible for measuring water quality across the planet, signifying water of unparalleled cleanliness and purity.

Tasting note: Smells of wet cement or damp stones in the initial minutes before the aromas shift gears, offering toasty, ash-like, smoky scents of tobacco leaf, roasted cereals, pencil eraser and vegetable oil. Palate entry shows an oily texture and tastes of charcoal and mildly sweet grain; midpalate displays well-structured flavors of lead pencil, off-dry grain and licorice. Finishes full in the mouth, acceptably fiery and off-dry. Rating: 90-95 points. 42%Alc./Vol. - www.wineenthusiast.com

Other reviews... Clear. warm creme anglaise and anise cookie aromas and peppercorn aromas. A round entry leads to a creamy, sweetish medium-bodied palate with sweet creamy vanilla, dried orchard fruit, and mild spice flavors. Finishes with a fruity, pink peppercorn fade. A fruity, creamy vodka for tropical cocktails. 42% Alc./Vol.  International Review of Spirits Award: Silver Medal

In the Rutherglen area of northern Victoria, Muscat is produced from a late harvest pick, which is partially fermented before being fortified with grape spirit leaving higher residual sugar and so a much sweeter style of wine. The Muscat is then filled into oak casks, where it spends the next 5 – 20+ years. Successive seasons maturing in the hot Australian climate results in magical flavours. Once decanted, the empty casks are still rich with Muscat that's soaked into the oak.

When searching for a fortified wine to compliment the 78 Degrees style, Muscat seemed an obvious choice. Casks were sourced from South Australian wineries and filled with whisky, imparting a rich fortified character and a gorgeous, silky texture. Bright grain and chocolate notes mingle with the luscious flavours of the fortified wine.

Notes from the producer... NOSE: Rich stewed fruit and raisins up front, give way to dark chocolate and apricot. A faint whiff of smoke on the nose, with rich notes of digestive biscuits. TASTE: Raisins and stewed prunes on the front palette give way to notes of cocoa pops. Dried apricot comes through late, with a tingling spice of black pepper. FINISH: The taste of dark fruit, along with some rich demerara sugar. A lingering note of clove and black pepper, along with a faint smokey note. 44% Alc./Vol.

When the team at Adelaide Hills Distillery set out to create a whisky, the aim was not to replicate but to innovate. Using unmalted barley complemented by six specialty malts (Biscuit, Supernova, Redback, Toffee, Crystal and Chocolate), they distilled it in a single-shot (husks included) using a hybrid pot and column still. It was finally influenced by a combination of 200L French & American oak wine casks. The result is a curious arrangement that's neither sweet nor dry. The nose is bready - or is it biscuity? Think Monte Carlos or flourless orange cake. The palate is medium bodied, silky and pure with low key spices, hinting at green barley, lemon butter, jaffas and orange pith through the finish. Unlike any other whisky we've tasted. 2000 bottles on offer. 44% Alc./Vol. Batch #2 tasted.

Tasting note: Very pale pink blush. Herbaceous aromas with brief air contact accenting piney juniper, white pepper and hints of semi-ripe berries. In May 2021, the famous model, Kendall Jenner announced the launch of her 818 Tequila range via an Instagram post. Like most tequila brands, the range includes three variants; a Blanco, Reposado and a top-of-the-line Anejo, all bottled at 40%. They're produced in a traditional manner under contract at La Cofradia distillery in Jalisco, home to over sixty tequila labels. Jenner's foray has been polarising, both in terms of the liquid in the bottles and accusations that her wealth means she's diverting attention and resources from smaller producers who lack her pull. The tequila itself is produced from Blue Weber agaves harvested at peak maturity (seven years) then cooked in brick ovens for 40 hours, before being subjected to the tahona extraction method - a large stone wheel that crushes the agave. Taste-wise, the consensus is these are light, approachable styles that don't make heavy demands on drinker's palates. The Anejo was aged for over one year in oak barrels.

Other reviews... “Rested in oak barrels for a fresh vanilla roundness,” an unusual step for a blanco — though this has apparently been filtered to remove any remaining color. Very sweet on the nose; the “vanilla roundness” is front and center, alongside pastry cream and some strawberry notes. The only the barest hint of agave here, a clear move to appease KUWTK fans who might be put off by a punchy, herbaceous blanco. The palate follows suit: Creamy, with lots of vanilla and more red berry notes. A tinge of earthy greenery on the finish is about as mild as could be. There’s nothing really wrong with it as it stands, but it doesn’t taste much like tequila. If you told me this was a vanilla-flavored vodka I would have believed you. - drinkhacker.com

Other reviews... Aged a minimum of two months in American and French oak barrels. Again quite sweet on the nose, but with a clear chocolate note that adds a bit more nuance to the vanilla bomb of the blanco. That cocoa character continues to the palate, which layers in some cinnamon notes to provide a Mexican chocolate feel, though again it feels heavily dosed with heaping spoonsful of brown sugar. The finish is as sweet or sweeter than the blanco, though at least the cocoa-dusted barrel influence evokes something a little more exciting and off the beaten path. - drinkhacker.com

    A.H.Hirsch 16 Y.O. Reserve Bourbon Whiskey (700ml) - Gold Foil Bottling
    Kentucky, UNITED STATES
    $3999. 00
    Bottle
    $47988.00 Dozen
    ABV: 45.8%

Note: Product has come from a private collection and as such has some minor scuffing/scratches/handling marks.

A truely collectible piece of American Whiskey history.

Michter’s Distillery in Schaefferstown, Pennsylvania was the foster home of A.H. Hirsch Reserve bourbon. Dating back to the mid-eighteenth century, Michter’s was distilling whiskey. As early as 1753 there was a small distillery on this Pennsylvania farmstead; that’s long before Kentucky was even settled. Thirty years later the farm’s owner decided to concentrate on whiskey production, which makes it one of the oldest commercial distilleries in the United States. The distillery stayed in the family for years until Abe Bomberger, a relative by marriage, bought it in 1860, gave the distillery its primary name—his—and distilled rye there until Prohibition closed him down. During prohibition, the plant was sold to a local farmer, who may have fired up the old stills every so often just to keep his neighbors happy. Louis Forman took it over in 1942, but he left abruptly to serve in the Army, not returning until 1950. It was then that he discovered records from Abe Bomberger’s time of ownership, and Forman began researching the history of the distillery and the methods once used to produce the whiskey. He decided to install a pot still, and hired Charles Everett Beam as master distiller. Mr. Beam—a direct descendant of Jacob Beam himself—was delighted at the opportunity to make great bourbon—the kind he had never been allowed to make because it was deemed too expensive; Mr. Forman, on the other hand, was committed to craft good whiskey, regardless of the cost. Hence, Michter’s Pot Still Whisky hit the market. It was 1956.

Adolf H. Hirsch, a former executive of the Schenley Co., bought some aged stocks of the whiskey and bottled a 16 year old and a 20 year old [sold out] under the A.H. Hirsch label, and the classic pot still bourbon was long ago transferred to stainless steel tanks to keep it from ageing further. Fortunately Henry Preiss kept the historic brand alive, but this extraordinary spirit exists on borrowed time. Michter’s Distillery finally closed in 1988 after making the only post-Prohibition pot still Bourbon in America. The vacant Michter’s Distillery itself, despite being listed on the National Historic Register, has passed through several hands since it closed, and has sadly become a dilapidated shell of its former self; the old rickhouses a reminder of a more spirited past. Hirsch Reserve stands in the class of top-flight single malt scotch whisky and Grand Champagne cognac.

"For five years I've been waiting for this Bourbon to come my way. It's always bothered me that I hadn't given any native whiskey a five star rating in 22 previous Spirits Journal issues. But, the fact is that while I've greatly admired more than a few homegrown whiskies and have handed out four stars to twelve Bourbons and one Tennessee Sour Mash, that one American whiskey that had the stuff to transport me to distilled spirit nirvana remained elusive ... until this issue. Lustrous, rich medium amber-orange with copper-russet highlights; the tight, compact nose has sensuous fragrances of spiced orange, walnut, corn husk, a touch of resin, and most prominently, nougat - while it's anything but expansive, the bouquet subtly draws me in, forcing me to inhale deeper - in the process, layers of aroma unwrap like the delicate skins of an onion - it's as seductive and coy a Bourbon nose as I've come across; in the mouth, this robust, but polite Bourbon confidently offers happily married tastes of caramel, oats, coffee, wood smoke, maple syrup, oak, controlled alcohol, and raisins; there's even a slim trace of sweet sherry in the sublime, firm, heady aftertaste; clearly the best bourbon I've evaluated for Spirits Journal to date."
    – tasting note sourced from Paul Pacult, The Spirit Journal, November 1994

Further notes… Brilliant burnished amber hue. Lush toffee, dried fruit, and flint aromas. A rich entry leads to a dense medium-to full-bodied palate with burnt caramel, mellow brown spices, and deeply toasted American oak flavors. Finishes with a balanced wave of spicy pepper. Wonderfully poised with a distinctly even, round quality. 45.8% Alc./Vol.

Further notes... nose: waxy honeycomb embedded in marzipan and dark chocolate; palate: again the honey is at the centre of things with a soft, corny development; more Lubek marzipan, this time with a soft, sweet lemon centre. The mouth feel is exceptional; finish: smaller grains here and developing firmer, drier oak. Rating: 91 points- tasting note sourced from Jim Murray, Whiskey Bible 2006

Tasting note: Bright gold. Initially impressions are of a fruit salad with striking scents of unripe canteloupe most salient along side dustings of dried coconut. Five minutes sees the fruity edge only slightly diminished. Light, silky entry builds into a soft, medium bodied, elegant and delicate malt. The fruity / vanilla combination repeats at mid palate, followed by hints of oatmeal and moderate length. A delightfully fruity Speysider. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Fresh and floral, with lively tropical fruit, honey, and vanilla. Gentle on the palate, with a slight syrupy texture to its malty foundation. Youthful, orange marmalade finish with a hint of spice. A pleasant, easy-going whisky.82 points

... Nose: Beautifully intense malt with a cidery-apple fruitiness. Gentle oak and honey round off superbly. Palate: Fresh, almost crisp mouthfeel with outstanding sweet maltiness and an almost Irish pot-still firm fruitiness. Mouthwatering. Finish: Softly spiced with a long, rich malt follow-through. Comment: Really outstanding example of massively complex, classy but undiscovered malt. 85 points

Aberlour A'bunadh Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) - Batch 076
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $149. 99
    Bottle
    $1799.88 Dozen
    ABV: 61.3%

Handles water so well, it's like getting two bottles in one.

Aberlour’s cask strength A’bunadh has long been a darling of single malt aficionados, released in batches and now onto #76 (overseas may have even more recent bottlings). Each varies in proof and flavour as proportions of older or younger material make the cut, but the brief remains the same: Make a 100% ex-oloroso sherry aged malt using the inventory at hand (anywhere from 5 to 25 years old). Keep it natural, which means zero chill filtration, keep it balanced and keep it affordable. No information about the number of bottles from each batch of A’bunadh is offered, but they're large outturns for a global community, which makes for a significant blending challenge. That hasn't stopped collectors and fans of sherried malts from stocking up on those that are deemed better than others. It's easy to be overly harsh or jump the gun with these bottlings. Unless you are willing to be patient and let them breathe, they can be muted, out of balance and slightly prickly at first - a bit like a wine that's uncorked before its prime. That's certainly the case here. Get past the intensity of the spices and batch 76 is closer in style to Batch 74; There are notes of figs, plums and raisins but it's not exactly a sherry bomb, instead American oak contributes an equal level of vanilla richness, amplified and softened by minimal water - which is where this gets a little dangerous. Don't be too quick to refill your glass (or your guests') or things could quickly get out of control. On the flip side, you can dilute away and still retain a surprising level of intensity - which is a bonus. Whichever way you like it, A'bunadh is worth checking out as you encounter it, at least so long as value remains Pernod-Ricard's priority. 61.3% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.

Notes from the producers... Auburn gold in the glass. Aromas of mixed spices, praline and spiced orange harmonising with rich, deep notes of Oloroso Sherry. The palate blends oranges, black cherries, dried fruit and ginger spiked with dark bitter chocolate and enriched with Sherry and Oak. Full bodied and creamy. Robust and intense finish with bitter-sweet notes of exotic spices, dark chocolate and oak.

Aberlour Double Sherry Cask Finish 18 Year Old Batch No. 001 Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $399. 00
    Bottle
    $4788.00 Dozen
    ABV: 43%

A one-off shipment of the first release of this super sherry bomb.

For anyone seeking a big sherry hit, Aberlour's Double Sherry Cask will deliver. Deeper in colour than the standard issue 18YO, it's first matured in American and European oak then racked off for a final finishing in Pedro Ximenéz and Oloroso sherry casks. It makes the final result wonderfully balanced with fruity nuances. Significant age adds body and develops the distinctive fruitiness to a richly raisined climax. Batch 001, so if it sounds like your thing, jump on it before the collectors do. 43% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... This one's very new and looks like the finishing craze stroke again. I tried the earlier 18 only in January this year but liked it a lot (WF 86) even if it was wounded by some original sin as they had done it at 50cl. This new one, at 70cl, has been finished twice, although I couldn't tell you whether that was simultaneously or successively. Classic set-up anyway, PX + oloroso. Colour: amber with orange hues. Orange hues suggest spirit caramel but I doubt they would have done that here. Nose: gentle, with more sherry than in the white oak, naturally. Although the vast majority of sherry casks are white oak too, it has to be said. Some cognac, many raisins, bags of dried goji berries, figs and dates, a little orange juice, zwetschke tart, clootie dumpling, treacle toffee pudding… Very clean, absolutely lovely, but as we all know, with these profiles it'll happen – or not - on the palate. Mouth: so easy. Aberlour's fruitiness, more zwetschke, preserved peaches in abundance, blood oranges, apricots, raisins, chocolate liqueur, fudge, a touch of lemon to keep it fresh and lively… Finish: medium, citrusy, fresher and brighter. Allegro. Millionaire shortbread in the aftertaste. Comments: this one's extremely dangerous. Never pour more than 2cl in your glass at any time, and never refill before your (or your guests') glass is totally empty, or you won't control anything. 87 points - whiskyfun.com

Sheer approachability has helped Aberlour become the most popular whisky in France, where more single malt is consumed than any other country. At around 40%, it's a polite, relaxed and sometimes, slightly wanting tasting experience. As an alternative for those who prefer sherry with a kick, owners Pernod-Ricard introduced the natural strength A'bunadh around 2000. Eighteen years later, Casg Annamh was launched as a French Exclusive in a similar vein (the name translates from the Gaelic as “rare cask”). Also influenced by Oloroso, it's matured in three types of casks: European oak Sherry casks and two different types of American oak . Like A'bunadh, Casg Annamh is batch specific, with six iterations to date, some better than others. Whichever you come across, they're all handsomely packaged with a wax seal stopper, while the extra ABV and zero chill filtration makes a world of difference. 48% Alc./Vol.

Aberlour has been a part of the Pernod Ricard group since the 1970s and today sits comfortably along side the top ten single malts in terms of worldwide sales. It's become particularly popular in France and the USA. This one's maturated in a combination of Oloroso sherry casks and first-fill American oak casks. It promises a degree of richness and sweetness without being heavy. In short, the kind of whisky that's given Aberlour such popular appeal. 40% Alc./Vol.

Whilst many Australian whisky enthusiasts are familiar with the traditional sherried bottlings from Aberlour distillery, many parts of Europe are privy to its more curious variants which combine whiskies derived from both sherry and bourbon casks, varying in proportion. We have sourced a small quantity of these relatively unknown expressions just to showcase what this distillery capable of.

Other Reviews... Fruitier, sweeter, and more straightforward than the new 16 year old. Ripe tangerine, orchard fruit, and caramel apples, all on a bed of nutty toffee. Underlying notes of cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger, with a dusting of dark chocolate. After the sweetness fades away, there’s lingering spice and oak resin on the finish. A good alternative to Macallan 12 year old or Glenfarclas 12 year old.

Like A'bunadh, Casg Annamh is batch specific, with five iterations to date, some better than others. Satisfyingly complete, Batch #5 gets it right, being neither too dry and reserved as Aberlour can be (almost like an overaged Armagnac) nor does it quite enter into the territory of over-the-top sherried styles. Given 5-10 minutes, the aromas juxtapose bitter orange peel, dark chocolate and cinnamon warmth with sweeter notes of prunes, fruit cake and vanilla. The palate has enough depth and attack to satisfy those who enjoy cask strength malts while being balanced enough to drink uncut. A moderate sweetness akin to dates and figs gives way to drier Oloroso; Brazil nuts, hints of fruit cake, cocoa and vibrant festive spices add interest. It's one of those appetising sherried styles that draws you back again and again. Of course it's less intense than A'bunadh, but it's neither better or worse. If anything the oloroso is more obvious and it's not as clunky (we tasted it side by side A'bunadh Batch #71). Handsomely packaged with a wax seal stopper, the extra ABV and zero chill filtration makes a world of difference. It's also worth noting that Batch #5 is sold out in the UK, casting doubt on future shipments. While the price is right, grab a few before we move on to Batch 6 or 7 - which may, or may not be as good. 48% Alc./Vol.

Absinthe was the trademark drink during the heady days of 19th century Paris. Famous artists, writers and poets like Picasso, Baudelaire, Hemingway, Degas, Manet, Toulouse-Lautrec and Oscar Wilde all heavily indulged in it. Maybe it was the mystical allure of 'The Green Fairy', or maybe it helped inspire their creativity. Absente, or 'Absinthe Refined', is a modern version of the original Absinthe recipe. While it retains the same aromatics and emerald green colour, its difference is that the Wormwood, (the botanical that caused the initial ban), has been replaced with a less bitter cousin called Southern-Wormwood, also known as 'Petite Absinthe'.

    Ahus, SWEDEN

    $659.88 Dozen
    ABV: 38%

Everybody knows that the Russian and Polish national spirit, made from rye malt and often potato starch, is vodka. However, one of the most popular premium vodkas on todays market actually comes from Sweden, first appearing in 1979. Distilled from grain grown in the fields of Southern Sweden, Absolut was conceived as a pure product with its own peculiar Swedish identity. The distinctive bottle design was inspired by an antique medicine bottle, while the minimalist logo and absolutely clear glass emphasise the simplicity and purity of the product. The brands advertising has become as iconic as Coca-Cola's. Forty percent of imported vodka bought by Americans is Absolut of some variety. Still, the recent explosion of premium vodkas has resulted in something of a fragmented market and weakened Absolut's stranglehold. The conclusion most seem to be drawing is that Absolut is fine for mixing, but if you're drinking shots, there are many other superior choices.

To produce Absolut, an alcoholic base is made from locally grown grain, then continuously distilled to produce a high strength spirit. The spirit is then filtered and finally diluted with pure water before bottling.

Tasting note: [40% alc./vol. batch tasted] 'Very neutral on the nose with just a touch of cereal aroma and a hint of alcohol. Very good mouth feel, dryish in style but with some very light hints of caramelization. Just touches of needle from the alcohol. Sweetish but rather short on the finish. I maintain that this makes one of the finest vodka tonics in the world, perhaps because the mouth feel of the vodka lends a bit more weight to the mixture that other, lighter vodkas. Alternatively, put it in the freezer to drink ice-chilled when it becomes thick in texture, smooth, and very dry. - Desmond Begg, The Vodka Companion.

Other reviews… Aroma is vaguely grainy, fresh and pleasing in the initial sniffs; further aeration brings out a mildly oily scent. Palate entry is simple, fundamentally sound and intensely dry and grainy; by midpalate, a shy, kernel-like, bittersweet taste enters the picture, then fades quickly. Ends meek and ethereal.

    Classic Cocktail: The Bloody Mary

This is one of the few cocktails traditionally served in the morning, along with the Screwdriver. The name Bloody Mary is used to refer to the blood-like colour of the cocktail, but may have also been derived from “Bloody” Mary Tudor, Queen of England. The order of preparation can be crucial, and many bartenders guard secret recipes for the drink.

Fernand Petiot claims to have created the Bloody Mary as we know it today and describes in The New Yorker, 18 July 1964, the manner in which he made it: “George Jessel said he created it”, says Fernand, “but it was really nothing but vodka and tomato juice when I took it over. I cover the bottom of the shaker with four large dashes of salt, two dashes of black pepper, two dashes of cayenne pepper, and a layer of Worcestershire sauce; I then add a dash of lemon juice and some cracked ice, put in two ounces of vodka and two ounces of thick tomato juice, shake, strain, and pour. We serve a hundred to a hundred and fifty Bloody Marys a day here in the King Cole Room and in the other restaurants and the banquet rooms.”
Absolut Vodka have launched a flavoured vodka, “Absolut Peppar”, which works well as a base for this drink.

Everybody knows that the Russian and Polish national spirit, made from rye malt and often potato starch, is vodka. However, one of the best value premium vodkas on todays market actually comes from Sweden. This superb, neutral vodka first appeared in 1979.

Flavouring vodka is an age old Swedish tradition. Absolut Raspberri is the latest addition to the Absolut flavoured vodka range. Feel the intense burst of natural raspberry blended with the finest vodka distilled from grain grown in the rich fields of Southern Sweden.

Tasting note: The opening perfume is extremely raspberry-like; aeration tones down the jammy intensity a little as the bouquet turns seed-like. The palate entry is fruity, mildly sweet, ripe and pleasant; at midpalate there's a slight embers-on-the-tongue warmth that accompanies the ripe raspberry flavor. Ends comfortably fruity and acidic.

Other reviews... Clear. Vibrant raspberry lozenge an pond water aromas. A brisk, buoyant entry leads to a dry-yet-fruity light-to-medium body of spicy raspberry jam and pink peppercorn flavors. Finishes with a raspberry powder and talc fade.

We Taste & Rate many of the Spirits & Liqueurs before you do.

We've always stood out as one of the few retailers to review wines and make our own call on quality and value for money. Part of our ongoing journey has been coming to terms with the qualitative differences between spirits. Put simply, what makes for a great whisky or a bad vodka? In 2009 we began developing an accountable working model for the evaluation of all spirit types based on the existing parent system, 'Winespider'. We also endeavour to source reviews from reputable critics to further guide you in your selections. Buy Spirits online at Nicks and get them delivered to most areas of Australia.

Adults often say they feel like 'kids in a candy shop' when they walk through our doors. Unfortunately not every one is able to travel out to our Melbourne based-shop. Thankfully, whether it's a single bottle of bitters or you're restocking your entire bar, Nicks Wine Merchants can deliver to hard-to-find spirits and liqueurs to your door.
