1982 Adelphi Miltonduff 40 Year Old Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $1499. 00
    Bottle
    $17988.00 Dozen
    ABV: 50.4%

224 cask strength bottles from a single refill Bourbon hogshead make up this venerable release, one of the oldest Miltonduffs on record. During its prolonged maturation, the distillery changed ownership three times. Famed for its robust and oily character that's used in large part in the Ballantine’s blends, official bottlings were rare until 2017 when it was included in a new range called the 'Ballantines Single Malt Series'. At the time of writing, we have one bottle only. 50.4% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. Collectable.

Another Adelphi Fusion project involving an international collaboration: This year's combines peaty Ardnamurchan with the slightly oily character of Japan's Chichibu. The whisky was aged for six years. As with the previous releases, it's named after Thomas Blake Glover who worked in Japan as a merchant and diplomat in the 19th to early 20th centuries - best known for his contribution to the industrialisation of the country. 460 bottles. 57.6% Alc./Vol.

    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $220. 00
    Bottle
    $2640.00 Dozen
    ABV: 57.4%

One of our favourite lesser-known Speysiders, Inchgower often shows a touch of coastal character and waxiness aligning it with several North Coast distillates. Maturation in a Palo Cortado sherry butt makes this edition a variation on classic sherried styles with one taster describing it as "...a creamy-sweet sherry board with full fruit that is pleasant and lovely... you can really notice the cream sherry." 57.4% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

A single cask selection from a from first fill bourbon barrel, cask #1275 was limited to just 252 bottles. 55.4% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. Collectable.

Other reviews... Colour: white wine. Nose: punchy, starting in an unusual way, on hints of green olive and even capers on top of a peatiness that isn’t huge but certainly bigger than the SMWS’. The rest is rather classic young Ardbeg, without any big bourbonny notes. Seawater, peat smoke, kippers and freshly cut apples. With water: more of the same, with an emphasis on the coastal notes and a little mint kicking in. Mouth (neat): powerful and very, very ‘Ardbeg’. Ashes, liquorice, smoked salmon, pepper, ‘raw’ peat, tar, green apples and a little salt. Not really complex but impressively punchy if you like them young. With water: clean, classic young Ardbeg, on apples, peat, pepper, marzipan, gentian and seashells. Finish: quite long, with quite some saltiness and notes of walnut skin as well as a little eucalyptus and lemon balm. Faint earthiness. Note that the finish is more pleasant when undiluted. Comments: very ‘young Ardbeg’, that is to say quite simple but very satisfying. I guess a good way of coming up with more complexity would be to marry various kinds of casks, including sherry. Hey, you could even call that Rollercoaster.  85 points - whiskyfun.com

Single cask Ardbegs offer amplified distillery character. They're highly desirable but rarely surface. This particular release was distilled in August 2011 and left to age in a first-fill bourbon barrel for six years before bottling at cask strength in July 2018 with an outturn of 256 bottles. 60.2% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. Islay, SCOTLAND
    $2499. 00
    Bottle
    $29988.00 Dozen
    ABV: 58.2%

Exclusively allocated to Ardbeg embassies with just 304 bottles available globally. This is one for the lucky few.

Considering the cult following Ardbeg has developed over the last few decades, it's almost unbelievable to think that the distillery was closed on and off for fifteen years until 1996, when it was purchased by Glenmorangie. Part of the huge upsurge in popularity has been driven by a steady stream of new releases, targeting both drinkers and collectors. The latest super-premium addition is this all-natural expression matured in a first-fill x-Cote Rotie wine cask, sourced from the Northern Rhone Valley in France (the exact estate is not disclosed). Filled on the 22nd August 2011 and bottled on the 28th of July 2020 exclusively for Ardbeg embassies around the world, cask #2323 is also reported to be one of the last to be signed by Distillery Manager, Mickey Heads before retiring. The new Manager, Colin Gordon is set to take over the helm and drive the company forward to even greater success. Instantly snapped up in global markets, this is certain to show considerable future upside for ardent investors and promises a full-throttle Islay tasting experience. Official notes by Dr Bill Lumsden below.

Notes from the producers... Nose – Deep, pungent and salty, with medicinal notes, dark chocolate, brambly fruit and the tiniest hint of vanilla. A splash of water brings out a flinty minerality, along with pungent floral notes like narcissus or lilies. As the bouquet continues to open up, the classic, smoky Ardbeg character starts to build. Palate – The mouthfeel is full and rounded. The primary flavour is bold and svaoury, with deep peat smoke, a curious rubbery note, and the suggestion of smoked cocoa powder. There is a soft oiliness throughout, with crunchy oak tannins and a touch of clove and nutmeg. The aftertaste lingers with salted peanuts, dark chocolate cream and a touch of coal tar.  Non chill filtered. 58.2% Alc./Vol. Strictly limited to one bottle per customer.

Filled on 19th October 2011, this rare single cask was released exclusively for Ardbeggians in Australia. Described as "a ripper of a dram", Cask no. 3063 was created during a period of experimentation at the distillery. In order to mastermind a malt with a new flavour profile, Dr. Bill Lumsden filled new x-Bourbon casks at higher alcohol levels than normal. Suffice to say it worked… and the result is an outturn for the outback with a unique herbal complexity, all the way from Ardbeg to Adelaide and beyond… Labeled as an Australian Exclusive, we have one unit only from the total yield of 202 bottles. 63.3% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

    Bottle
    $2759.88 Dozen
    ABV: 57.3%

One of the last single cask Ardnamuchans filled in 2015 that will be released. According to the distillery, the 2015s are ageing so well they're reluctant to sell more, instead, they’re holding on to the remainder to see what happens with further maturity. 256 units of peated distillate from a first-fill Bourbon barrel were reserved for Australia. Tasted from a 50ml sample, the nose presents a relatively thin veil of smoke that wavers over a base of creamy vanillas and honey-drizzled malt. There is a light citric freshness too that hints at salted limes. If you missed the peat at first sniff, you’ll get it on the palate: Oily peat reek on entry gives way to the intensity of the malt, while a touch of coastal brine adds lift. The balance is precise. The lingering buttery sweetness shows off the quality of the wood selection. We already knew Ardnamurchan was good. This bottling confirms it’s only going to get better. 57.3% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

1997 Benriach Single Cask No.15059 Oloroso Puncheon 24 Year Old Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $899. 00
    Bottle
    $10788.00 Dozen
    ABV: 55.7%

This should certainly appeal to sherry heads looking for increasingly elusive age statements at natural strength. Originally exclusively available via French retailer, Le Comptoir Irlandais, it was drawn from first-fill cask number 15059 that previously contained Oloroso sherry. 665 numbered bottles are on offer globally. A tiny fraction of that has landed in Australia. 55.7% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the bottlers... Colour: stained teakwood. Nose: crème brulée and chocolate-coates hazelnut, with cherrywood, driad apple and fig. Palate: cherry and banana parfait with dark chocolate, toasted vanilla, dried apricot and fresh cream.

Note: This is a back release and as such the boxes may have varying degrees of very minor bruising and/or scuffing.

[20ml sample] Peated, though it's not immediately obvious, likewise the Oloroso needs time to show its wares. Ample air contact sees the phenols at the forefront. Finally, the smoke recedes, becoming meaty, sweet and leathery with a touch of burnt orange. An enormous malt with the peat and sherry in controlled tension, and yet you can enjoy it uncut. Smoked meats and hints of seville orange lead into an intense, peppery finish. Ends tangy, vibrant and long. Rewards patience. 563 bottles. 51.1% Alc.Vol. Very limited stocks.

    $170. 00
    Bottle
    $2040.00 Dozen
    ABV: 58.2%

This is close enough to a repeat on a previous Claxton's release (same age and maturation), the only difference being it's slightly higher ABV. The earlier cask was a precocious balancing act considering it was one of the youngest Mannochmore's ever bottled. Expect the same here. Be quick if you're keen - the outturn was just fifty bottles. Decanted from a refill ruby port octave. 58.2% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the bottlers... NOSE: Rich with pastry and spices. Dark fruits. Cedar wood. PALATE: Rich and warming. Waves of sweet fruits and oak. FINISH: Dessert-like finish with dark, ripe fruit and oak.

Notes from the bottlers... NOSE: Rich Sherry and fruit with a thick wave of smoke at the edges. Cherry candy. PALATE: Sweet and fruity at first. The peat is intermingled with oak and Sherry notes. FINISH: Long and elegant. Perfect balance of thick oak and sherry flavours.

    $130. 00
    Bottle
    $1560.00 Dozen
    ABV: 50%

One of the better Dailuaines to come our way in recent times, this youthful, NCF, high abv bottling delivers a thick, oily malt bearing hints of ripe papaya, air-brushed with puffs of smoke that are more salient as the palate progresses. The finish is drier than the mid-palate stage and almost ashy, like some Ardmores. As an introduction to peated styles this is ideal; for seasoned whisky buffs it will be a throwback to smokey Highlanders of yesteryear. Also reminiscent of Johnnie Walker Green Label - as it was decades back. Double ex-Islay cask matured. 50% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the bottlers... NOSE: Malt and sweet ash. Baked seaweed. Vanilla pastry. PALATE: Sweet and peaty at first. Malty and cereal notes with some oak. FINISH: Mild peat on the finish. A soft and malty finish.

    Campbeltown, SCOTLAND
    $130. 00
    Bottle
    $1560.00 Dozen
    ABV: 50%

As with the previous release, only whiskies from the Campbeltown Peninsula make it into this bottling - so that's Springbank, Glen Scotia and possibly Glengyle. The proportions are not disclosed, meaning it could also be just a teaspoon of one added to a cask of any of the above. PX sherry matured and bottled at the right time to capture a succulent, tongue-coating, sweeter-styled malt that retains a delicate saline / coastal freshness; a hint of tangy orange peel and chocolate gets the balance near perfection. Even at just six years old, there is something special about this region's whiskies. You'll find it hard to stop at one. 50% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.

Notes from the bottlers... NOSE: Toffee. Vanilla - marzipan. Prunes. Raisins in syrup PALATE: Sweet and malty. Lots of fruit and dessert flavours. Strudel. FINISH: Sweet and satisfying finish. Fudge with raisins in the aftertaste.

Another 50% ABV flavour hit. Despite the provenance, the peat is dialled down allowing the soft stone fruits to get a showing. The texture is mouthwatering and comes with a keen sense of cured meats; Rich cereals are the keynote. Oily peat rises through the finish, but never asserts first place. The overall effect is very pleasing - perfect for drinkers who don't mind a wisp of smoke in their whisky. Bourbon cask matured. 50% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the bottlers... NOSE: Currants with samphire. Very coastal – smoked mackerel. Brazil nuts. PALATE: More samphire/seaweed notes with a salty-sweet kick (sweet peppers). FINISH: Salty-tingly finish. Smoked meats on the finish.

    ABV: 50%

Claxton's are turning out some lovely teaspooned malts, like this full-bodied, fruity and beautifully rounded edition that's bursting with zing and texture. ‘Billy G’ is a pseudonym for William Grant, which is where the spirit originally comes from but we're not allowed to name it due to cask covenants. The juiciness of the malt conjures red apple, ripe pear and dried mango. The peat is barely discernible, except at the very end, while the freshness of the delivery brings a Summertime feel. Sometimes a whisky as straightforward and delicious as this is all you want and need. Bourbon cask matured. 50% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

There is already a superb purity and poise to this north-east Highland toddler, with its simplicity more than compensated by a creamy mouthfeel and the expressiveness of its one-punch flavour profile. Medium long and medium spicy, time in sweet wine barriques has tempered the latent feisty-fruitiness. With a small addition of water, some east coast brine becomes evident. Rich, malty, big-hearted and fun. 50% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.

Notes from the bottlers... NOSE: Custard sweetness - trifle. Barley sugar. Hint of grape-sweetness. PALATE: Soft and sweet. More sweet grape notes and oak spice. FINISH: More custard sweetness on the finish. Nice mix of oak and barley.

Other reviews... Boy is this one young! Even younger, and it would be a kilogram of barley plus a glass of Sauternes. Some kind of finishing without any primary maturation in other words (come on, S.) but don't get me wrong, I very well know these modern babies can be super-good. Colour: gold. Nose: this is pure pastry, custard tarte, crema catalana, mirabelle liqueur, white chocolate, banana cake… With water: a tad more on croissants and brioches. And a small kougelhopf while we are at it. Mouth (neat): more sweet wine influence, as well as more spices, peppercorns, touches of ginger and cinnamon from the oak (I suppose it was French oak but many are also using Slovenian or Hungarian oak – same species though). Big pink gooseberries, oranges, plums… With water: more sweet maltiness, but indeed a sémillon-side too. Perhaps a tiny bit of pineapple? Finish: medium, on pastries, ripe bananas, custard, more white chocolate, a drop of muscat… The oak feels a little bit in the aftertaste. Comments: very good, of course, but the real achievement here is to make our guts (or hearts) believe it's ten years old, while our brain knows it's only four. Well done. 83 points - whiskyfun.com

From the oldest grain whisky distillery in Scotland (est.1824). Wheat is sourced from the east coast. Gin and vodka are also produced, with three Coffey stills and one Patent still currently in action. The house style is light, clean, fruity and flavourful, providing the backbone for Diageo's blends. Distilled in 2006 this spent 16 years in an Oloroso sherry octave which means it's probably not your standard grain profile, rather, one that's taken on some of the qualities of a sherry matured single malt. 65 bottles only. 57.1% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Speyside distillery is located, unsurprisingly, in the Speyside region of Scotland. It's one of the newer distilleries but has already released a small range of official bottlings that include an 8 year old, 10 year old, 12 year old and a 15. Claxton's deliver a delicious, sulphur-free sherried expression with judicious wine input: Honey, caramel fudge and assorted dried fruits set a sweet tone on the nose, while the palate shows less ripe characteristics. The bottlers mention papaya - which is spot on; plus there's a little dried mango and elderflower following through. It's almost like a low peat Bowmore from decades back. As you might expect at this age, the balance at high ABV is excellent but there's also vibrancy to boot for a 26 year old. Sauternes barrique matured. 49.2% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the bottlers... NOSE: Dried apricot and caramel. Sweet oak and vanilla. Herbal and musty. PALATE: Sweet oak and more dried fruits; papaya, apricot. Soft spiciness. FINISH: Oak-rich finish with fruit and tannin in equal measure.

    $230. 00
    Bottle
    $2760.00 Dozen
    ABV: 56.3%

Arran takes a leaf out of Jura's playbook, producing a genuine pussycat: The peat feels like a delicate, translucent glaze over the barley, rather than an opaque layer but attains a harder line on the palate in an almost earthy, dry minerality that is rarely encountered in Scottish malts. The smoke mingles with bittersweet cocoa and dried grassy tones making for a fascinating, quasi-mezcal kind of experience. So soft and so unexpected. Islands, perhaps, but you'd never suspect it was from Arran. Bourbon barrel matured. 203 bottles. 56.3% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the bottlers... NOSE: Heather honey (Mead). Rich vanilla. Herbal. PALATE: Mouth coating and moreish. Rich oak and honey. FINISH: Like a honey lozenge. Long, sweet oaky aftertaste.

    $1680.00 Dozen
    ABV: 58.8%

Benrinnes is on the rise these days with indies bringing it to the attention of whisky lovers globally. That's justified by a typically high quality output, nowhere better demonstrated by young bottlings. In fact, it's doubtful a more youthful expression than this has ever been released. Tea biscuits, sponge cake and sweet malt are underscored by hints of apple pie and pineapple pudding. There's a pleasant tartness at the finish that adds authenticity and bite to the fruitiness. You can improve the balance with a splash of water, but unadulterated, this Benrinnes already boasts impressive body and a surprisingly creamy mouthfeel. Matured in a refill Oloroso Sherry octave. 58.8% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the bottlers... NOSE: Apple cider. Pine. Cloves and winter spices. PALATE: Sweet oak with rich barley and candy flavours. FINISH: Barley sugar sweets with spiky oak in the aftertaste.

    Reduced from $220.00
    $180. 00
    Bottle
    $2160.00 Dozen
    ABV: 54.8%

Established in 1966 in response to the growing demand for malt whisky by blenders, Tamnavulin's market presence is quite recent. Owned by Whyte & Mackay, the distillery was pretty much closed from 1996 to 2007, so there are gaps in the inventory, which also explains why recent official bottlings have been NAS or vintage-dated releases. Independents are few and far between. This is another very tasty and spritely malt in the Claxton collection with a dry, chocolate-orange character from time in an oloroso octave. The aromas waver between vaguely citric, green wood notes to more defined raisin bread and dried fruits. The octave has significantly boosted the mouthfeel of what is generally a lightweight malt, finishing with cocoa, fruit cake and cinnamon spice. An affable sherried whisky that's on the sweeter side. 54.8% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the bottlers... NOSE: Marzipan. Custard creams biscuits. Raisins in syrup. PALATE: Round and full. Sweet oak and syrup. Heavy Sherry notes. FINISH: Rich and warming. Waves of sweet oak and spice in the aftertaste.

There is also a fantastic depth and spiciness not normally associated with this distillery. 50 bottles only! Refill oloroso sherry octave. 55.1% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

    $1560.00 Dozen

If this was average malt, you could accuse Claxton's of taking advantage bottling at such an extraordinarily young age. It is slightly green on the nose, but no question it's Bunnah' from the first whiff. There is a signature purity that follows onto the palate: Cream tea biscuits, semi-ripe pears, a trace of brine and mineral, wrapped up in an oily/waxy succulence that reminds you of good Inchgower or perhaps Pulteney. Thankfully it's unpeated, and from a fresh Bourbon barrel - so you get a full showing. When your distillate is this good, the question of age statements almost seems irrelevant. 50% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

In terms of peat, one of the quieter Ardmores of recent tastings. Eminently drinkable, even for 'non smokers', the profile falls mainly in the rich, chocolatey spectrum. Gentle bitterness on the finish calls for water. Rounded and accessible. STR barrique matured. 60.3% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the bottlers... NOSE: Toasted oak with a hint of Black Forest Gateau. Mild spiciness. PALATE: More peat than expected with a rich sweetness (oak, vanilla, syrup). FINISH: Sweet and syrupy with a slight peppery tingle in the aftertaste.

An old reliable in the smokey Highland category, only this one's a bit of a sleeper. At first taste, oddly light for a cask strength Ardmore, as if the octave has masked the usually effusive malt resulting in a whisky that's kind of smokey and kind of sherried, but ends up sitting on the fence. The effortless delivery and sheer drinkability make amends. Salt'n'pepper cracker biscuits adds a nice touch to the oily finish, too. Ideal pre-dinner dram. Ardmore from a brandy cask presents a fascinating proposition, although the cask in question seems to have had a reducing effect on the nose. Not so on the palate where Ardmore's sooty keynote is emphasised in an ample malt of considerable vitality. Peppers dapple the tongue. The sooty peat recedes through the cocoa-laced, tea biscuit finish. From a brandy quarter cask yielding 147 bottles. 58.1% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from Claxton's... Nose: Sea-salty freshness at first. Butter biscuit with a sweet pepperiness. Palate: More peaty on the palate. Sweet ash and barbecue notes. Finish: Long, dry finish. Lots of salt and pepper and oak in the aftertaste.

Strathclyde is not too far from Glasgow and was originally built to produce gin, but has since become an important producer of wheat-based grain whisky for large volume Scotch blends. Owned by Pernod Ricard, it's safe to assume a majority finds its way into Chivas Regal products. This single cask example has spent its entire 28 years in an ex-first fill Bourbon barrel yielding 198 bottles. It sounds old for a whisky, but many grains at this age are still too young and disjointed. Having said that, we tasted a 26 year old Cooper's Choice several years ago (of the same or similar liquid) and it was solid. Anticipate another notable selection here. 49.5% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

    $2499. 00

    ABV: 44.6%

Beyond investment grade - now more a museum piece, and deserving of a place in any serious whisky collection.

From the long closed Dumbarton plant, this is all the more unusual for its extraordinary age. Grandfather Dumbartons are frequently off the charts when it comes to ratings in the single grain category. This is definitely one of the oldest, if not the oldest ever bottled upping the ante on a 1975 Gordon & Macphail 45 YO released earlier in 2022. Beautifully presented in a heavyweight bottle housed in a wooden box, Douglas Laing are offering 215 bottles to the world, drawn from one refill hogshead at natural strength with no chill filtration. Anticipate aromas and flavours of Scottish honey, maple syrup, candied apples, ginger, nutmeg and milk chocolate with a lengthy poached pear, pistachio and marmalade finish. Extremely limited stocks. 44.6% Alc./Vol.

Also known as 'Inverleven', Dumbarton was built in 1938, just south of the Highland border near Glasgow and for a while was the largest operation of its kind. Classified as a lowlander by Michael Jackson, production was predominantly set aside for the Ballantine's blends. When bottled by Indies, Dumbarton is typically the label for grain whisky. Inverleven the single malt, but it's not a rule. Nowadays stocks are "undeniably rare". The notable feature of the plant was its American-style stainless steel columns (rather than the traditional Coffey stills). A focus on maize, meant its spirit was rather heavy in character. In 1956 a third Lomond still was added with an attached rectification column designed to produce different styles of spirit. The distillery was decommissioned in 1985, though its column still was salvaged by Bruichladdich to produce its now famous 'Botanist gin'.

Quite possibly, the oldest Caol Ila ever bottled: 40 long years maturing in a refill hogshead. Older Caol Ilas can be quite stunning; the peat recedes and the quality of the spirit shines through. Extremely limited. Just 206 bottles exist globally. 54.6% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Expect immediately oceanic, West Coast of Scotland character, with enticing yet subtle phenols coming through. Palate: The palate reveals leather, malted barley, spices and a honey-glazed smoked meat quality. Finish: The finish is exceptional, with more peat smoke, dried citric fruits and oak bonfire embers.

    $59988.00 Dozen
    ABV: 57.7%

Note: Product has come from a private collection and as such has some minor scuffing/scratches/handling marks. Specifically, there is some wear to the bottle's neck sticker and minor cellar bloom on the certificate of authenticity contained inside the box. Actual product pictured.

Distilled one year before Port Ellen closed and bottled in January 2008. There's a cask from the Laings of the same age and vintage rated 90 points by whiskyfun.com, so expect the quality to be high again. We have one only from the original outturn of 300 bottles at natural strength. 57.7% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. Collectable.

Notes from the bottlers... On the nose it is literally a breath of sea air, with a hint of Caledonian MacBrayne's ferry as a back drop, plus distinct heathery peat heading to a sweet and smokey oakiness. Initially dry, ashy and salty on the palate, this moves through a gristy sweet barley phase to something more creosoted at its tail - and this runs really long at the finish which is tarry too, moving late onto a dry, spiced, ashy (again) style.

    ABV: 60.1%

The big smoke'n'sherry theme continues with No.201, another oloroso cask, this time yielding 893 bottles at 60.1% Alc./Vol. We have less of this than any other Ballechin right now. Judging by a blogger's post on whiskybase.com below, the quality is very high, but you will need patience for the sherry to fully shine, otherwise, it's "...a standout".

Other reviews... First impressions were only of peat and smoky pork. It took quite a while to get beyond that wall of scent, but behind it, there was earthy tea and a floral tartness. Over time the pork cure got sweeter and sweeter. That was a theme accross the board: the sweetness being initially very shy and peripheral and increasing in confidence and complexity. The palate started off on the short side, with only the honeyed peat briefly showing before salty spice and the transition to the finish. Still, it was enjoyable with a dense thickness, heft and dark malted breadiness. When it opened up, it was was like it recieved an upgrade patch. Right after the honey peat, it then Introduced stewed, dark fruit and chocolate that behaved like it has been there the whole time, nonchalantly becoming the bulk of the midsection. The finish wasn't altered so much, being mostly fully formed from the get go. The black currants from earlier were the major change to it, as it brought more sweetness to the slow burn of various pepper-corns. This was a standout whisky that assembled a complex range of delicious textures and tones and arranged them artfully. - whiskybase.com

A perfect excuse to get acquainted with Springbank's nearest neighbour.

West Highlanders produce many of Scotland's most charismatic malts, led by Oban and Ben Nevis and joined by the Campbeltown community further south west. Springbank is legendary, but there's another Campbeltowner on the rise: Glen Scotia. One of the country's smallest distilleries, the core range is the realm of supermarkets in Australia (though the quality is generally good). That leaves others to source the 'proper stuff'. In this exclusive bottling, you get the chance to try Glen Scotia in all of its unpeated glory: Young and feisty, but already distinctive and most importantly, uncut.

Cask No.19/660-2 was a first-fill Tawny Port hogshead, which has no doubt contributed to the whisky's auburn / polished mahogany colour. In the absence of peat, Glen Scotia's profile can fall somewhere between nutty and fruity. Here, both aspects vie for your attention. The aroma opens peppery, then nutty and gingery with a twang of sulphur and sea breeze lending a coastal edge. 4-5 minutes releases sweeter scents of spiced pears and cinnamon apples over earthier, root vegetable-like notes. The palate is intense and long, unfolding with ginger snaps, spiced apple and salted dark chocolate in a tactile, even slightly 'gritty' delivery. That light sulphur note returns, but adds complexity rather than detracting (those with the 'sulphur gene' will find some satisfaction here). Throat lozenges - think Fisherman's Friends - round off a powerful, heartwarming finish. There's little trace of the port cask, instead what's highlighted is yet another fascinating West Highland make. If you're sulphur sensitive, add water. Those notes dissipate and the profile harmonises in a contrasting and beautiful way.

With just over a kilometre between them, speculation as to whether Glen Scotia will be the next Springbank is inevitable. Given the distillery's versatility and quality of output, the potential is there, but it probably won't balloon anytime soon (then again, just a few years ago many seasoned whisky lovers were oblivious to Springbank...) Place your bets. Right now, here's a perfect excuse to get better acquainted with Glen Scotia. 313 bottles for Australia only. 53.3% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

The Glendronach Single Cask bottlings are always keenly anticipated by whisky enthusiasts seeking extended age, hard-to-find, 'old school' sherried malts in the most unadulterated form imaginable.
Just launched in Australia is the new Batch 11. Across the board, it's impossible to ignore the striking sienna brown colour of these whiskies, each promising a flavour extravaganza for Sherry-heads. Unfortunately, colour and distillery notes are all we have to go on. There are no samples (the miniscule allocation doesn't justify it) and at the time of writing, it seems reviews of these whiskies are non-existent (despite the official UK launch being in January this year.) Six months later almost no one has caved in to opening a bottle - a fact not only indicative of a growing industry trend but symptomatic that "collecting mania" has set in at Glendronach. If for you, Batch 11 is just another opportunity to 'diversify a portfolio', this is at least one annual release where speculation (arguably) presents less risk than other offers of its kind. After all, it is the collection that routinely dazzles spirits writers. Jim Murray commented of last year's, "...when this distillery gets it right, your taste buds don't stand a chance. Almost brain-explodingly complex". At the very worst you're going to be stranded with a great bottle of whisky.

Ranging from 43 to 18 years old, there is once again, huge and intriguing variety across the nine expressions in Batch 11, six of which were matured in Pedro Ximenez Sherry Puncheons, two in Oloroso Sherry Butts and one in an Oloroso Sherry Puncheon. All nine single casks have been hand-selected by BenRiach’s Managing Director and Master Distiller Billy Walker who comments:

“I believe Batch 11 makes a very simple point - the wood has a huge influence on the spirit. You immediately sense - and taste - the influence of the casks on these nine sublime single malts.... In these nine expressions you feel the pulse of our inventory at GlenDronach and the idiosyncratic personality of the casks coming through. That, plus the passion and craftsmanship of our people, is what produces these incredible whiskies time and time again.”

Walker adds that batch Eleven has a number of highlights:
The oldest, 1971 cask number 2920, at 48.6% vol, is a monster 43 year old malt matured in a Pedro Ximenez Sherry Puncheon. Intense treacle toffee floods over sour plums and roasted coffee. Harmonising waves of leather and tobacco give great depth and are balanced perfectly by a subtle toasted walnut and date back note. As a contrast, the 18 year old from cask number 244, at 56.9% vol, is the youngest, distilled in February 1996. Matured in a fine Oloroso Sherry Butt, there is a tremendous balance of mixed candied peel and stewed dark fruits sprinkled with dark Demerara. Delicious waves of toffee, cracked barley and warm oak spices combine to give a long and elegant finish.

Just like last year's collection, all the whiskies are in exceedingly short supply. Whether for drinking or investment, buying early will maximise your PFM (pleasure for money ratio).

Distilled in 1971, cask 2920 is a Pedro Ximenez Sherry Puncheon. Bottled November 2014, this 43 Years Old is at a natural strength of 48.6% Alc./Vol. Only 523 bottles produced.

Single Casks make for singular whiskies.

Single Cask Single Malt is whisky drawn from just one cask, the product of just one distillation run from just one distillery. It's also usually sold at cask strength and only lightly filtered - if at all. The information on the label is typically extended to include the cask number, date of distillation, date of bottling and even the total outturn (number of bottles produced).

It's important to remember that almost everything that turns whisky into the drink we know and love takes place inside an oak barrel. And in the same way that no two trees are the same, every barrel is slightly different. Growth rings are different, porosity is different, therefore not even whisky from two barrels filled on the same day from the same still and stored side by side will necessarily taste the same.

We believe some of the most exciting and memorable whisky experiences to be had are from Single Cask bottlings. Unique and never to be repeated, they offer a glimpse into Scotch whisky in its most 'elemental' state. Companies like Cadenheads, Adelphi and Douglas Laing have consistently high quality selections which you can buy online and have delivered to most of Australia.
