Rare Macallans

“...Ask any distillery manager his second favourite dram and as often as not the Macallan is it.” So wrote Jim Murray.
It's a truism that resonates with a small group of 'Macallan chasers' who simply will not settle for less. Our many years of selling fine Single Malt Scotch have acquainted us with several savvy collectors who've patiently acquired bottlings from this Grand Marque over decades. Every so often limited editions and 'antiques' are re-released, some bottlings so rare that they're now difficult to procure even in larger European markets. We also regularly source duty free exclusives. So if there's a rare Macallan you're looking for that's not listed, call us on 1800 069 295 and we'll try to track it down.

***Taiwan Market Exclusive bottling in timber box***

Released in 2015 and joining Macallan's stream of recent NAS bottlings is "Edition No. 1", targeted towards the U.S. market, and reportedly drawn from eight distinct European and American oak cask styles and sizes. Naturally coloured and bottled at 48% ABV (unusual for Macallan), the actual cask regime has been stated too: First-fill casks consisted of Tevasa Butts, Toneleria Hudo Butts, Vasyma Puncheons, J&M Martin Butts, Gonzalez Byass Butts and Tevasa Puncheons. The second-fill casks were Sherry hogsheads and Sherry butts. The only casks that used American White Oak were the Vasyma Puncheons, whereas the rest used European Oak. Some tasters have described the whisky as "a big step up" from Macallan's standard 1824 range.

Master Whisky Maker, Bob Dalgarno says to expect hints of orange, apple and dried fruit on the nose, leading into wood spices on the palate supported by nutmeg, cinnamon and hints of dried ginger and toffee and a medium to long and lingering finish.

Other reviews... People tend to moan about Macallan having lost its mojo. Not here. This is a vatting of different sized American and (mostly) European oak casks, so no surprise that it’s oak-led, but Macallan is a heavy distillate and it needs oak to prosper fully. Here you get rosin, marmalade, green fig jam, and the power of concentrated oils. The palate is powerful and supple, with some clove, ginger, and yet more chocolate. Substantial and well worth checking out.

The Macallan Rare Cask Red Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) - 2022 release
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $550. 00
    Bottle
    $6600.00 Dozen
    ABV: 43%

Hot on the heels of the 2021 edition, the new Rare Cask Red represents whiskies drawn from some of the distillery's "finest and rarest sherry seasoned oak casks". Or as Sarah Burgess, Lead Whisky Maker puts it, "Every oak cask has its own personality, with little differences that make them unique. From time to time The Macallan Whisky Mastery Team discovers casks maturing in our warehouses which stand out from the others." Specifically, they display an intense, sweet raisin note coupled with better than expected complexity. While many have questioned whether there's actually any vintage variation in these annual bottlings, few have the chance to open them to taste. The stunning presentation alone means most will be snaffled away by collectors. 43% Alc./Vol.

The Macallan Sir Peter Blake Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $3999. 00
    Bottle
    $47988.00 Dozen
    ABV: 47.7%

A limited edition Macallan made in collaboration with world famous British pop artist, Sir Peter Blake, perhaps best remembered for designing the cover for the Beatles' album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. It's the third time in four decades the iconic artist has partnered with Macallan, beginning in 1986 when Sir Peter Blake designed the labels for a set of twelve 1926 60-year-olds. This release commemorates Blake’s visit to The Macallan Estate and tells the story of some of the colourful characters from the distillery’s past and present with a label digitally designed by Sir Peter himself. Taking inspiration from Sir Peter, the presentation box has been created with colours that inspired his art – blue and green with natural textures. The box houses the bottle, a certificate detailing the history and heritage on which the art was based, and artwork printed on a scroll, representing anecdotes from the wider collection, portrayed in Sir Peter Blake’s distinct style. A tracing paper overlay provides information on each character from The Macallan’s history that Sir Peter chose to include.  Lead Whisky Maker, Sarah Burgess was inspired by Blake’s character to create a style with surprising notes of treacle and black pepper. 47.7% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the producers... Nose: Rich in dried fruits and spices with hints of orange and clove. Palate: Dried fruits with cracked black pepper and treacle, accents of vanilla and orange oil. Finish: A long, rich oak finish with cinnamon and cacao.

There's been quite some interest in this curiously titled Macallan which reflects the story of Scotland’s world-famous Hogmanay festivities celebrated annually on 31st December. This seasonal release is a collaboration with acclaimed Japanese-French illustrator, Erica Dorn, whose artwork has featured in director Wes Anderson’s films.
The unique packaging provides a special unboxing experience coupled with Dorn’s playful abstract illustrations, inspired by the historic fire rituals dominant in New Year celebrations around the world. Upon opening the gift box you discover a blue interior, representing the night skies of Hogmanay (New Year’s Eve) and the blue from the national flag of Scotland, the Saltire.

Says Macallan's Lead Whisky Maker, Sarah Burgess, "Creating A Night on Earth in Scotland has been an extremely personal experience for me, which took me back to growing up in our family home in Speyside, just across the river from The Macallan Estate."

American and European oak sherry seasoned casks, along with American ex-bourbon barrels have been employed to bestow a rich, sweet shortbread-like character - a whisky referencing the rich Scottish delicacy traditionally gifted and eaten at Hogmanay. This profile is punctuated by festive notes of dried orange and spice. It's recommended neat, with a serve of shortbread on the side. 43% Alc./Vol. Natural colour.

Other reviews... Macallan always loves to wear its sherry on its sleeve, but this is nonetheless one of the racier bottlings I’ve seen from the classic Speyside outfit in recent years. Boldly sherried up front, the whisky exudes notes of fresh clementines and cloves on the nose, though these exuberant, Christmassy characteristics are tempered by notes of oiled leather and roasted chestnuts. Austere but refined, it immediately invites sipping, where many of these same elements are evident. Oily with orange and nougat notes prominent, it fades into a lightly grassy cereal character, some youth evident later in the game. The finish has a gently pastoral character to it, though it remains bright and dripping in citrus notes, almost lemony at times. While it’s not overwhelmingly serious or complex, it is hard to put down — and a (nearly) classic example of what Macallan does best. And it’s awfully pretty in the box. - drinkhacker.com

Yet another expression where a big brand Scotch is taking age out of the equation, letting the liquid (not the number on the label) do the selling. Launched in the US in late 2014, Macallan Rare Cask is drawn from 16 different hand picked sherry-casks, the majority of which are first fill. The Sherry input is reportedly quite profound, so expect a bigger, richer expression.

"Whisky obviously has an age, we just don't publicize it here," says Stuart MacPherson, the Macallan Master of Wood. "This is something the whisky industry created in the early 20th century, where we put an age on it to make the whisky easier for the customer to identify. We're taking things a step forward and saying this isn't about the age, it's about what the consumer wants and the skills of the whisky maker."

While Macallan will not disclose the age of the various whiskies in the mix, their theory is that by not being tied to a number on the label, Master Distiller, Bob Dalgarno can work to taste, not to age, and so do some of his finest work.

Described by one taster as "a ruby red wow of a whisky" and another as "a Macallan fit for Kings", this certainly seems to have hit the sweet spot for many veterans of the brand on the web. The stunning colour is highlighted by a sculpted, heavy glass decanter and red presentation box.

Tasting note: Deep copper coin colour. Sherried, but not in a profound way, with a little more pepper than the traditional 18YO. Give it plenty of time in the glass to let the aroma fill out. Spice and peel on entry, but gains richness and typical Macallan polish towards the finish: Shortbread, dark chocolate, fruit cake and cinnamon flavours emerge as well as whispers of smoke. Elegant and slightly leaner Macallan. Tastes like some Fino barrels could be in the mix? 43% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... One of these very embarrassing newish NAS bottlings, ridden with stories about oak and sherry – and laudatory adjectives – but in fact, it’s all a thick smokescreen of claims, there’s nothing certain. Only the price ‘may’ tell us where it sits... But can you trust a price tag? Colour: amber. Nose: an earthy and slightly smoky sherry that reminds me of the older 8 or 12, with raisins, kirsch, Seville oranges, chocolate, chestnut honey and then cinnamon, cloves, mint, and nutmeg. It doesn’t feel very old, but I’d call this ‘classic’. Mouth: indeed, the older 12+. Quite a lot of bitter oranges and honey in the arrival, then this very peculiar toffeeness plus Corinthian raisins, pipe tobacco, liqueur-filled chocolate, and a touch of vanilla fudge. Millionaire shortbread. Good body. Finish: medium, very well balanced I have to say, rather on marmalade this time. Honeyed and moderately spicy aftertaste. Comments: seriously, I think this is very good, and probably much more ‘Macallan’ than other newish bottlings. Great work, only the price is a little, well, you know what a mean.

1997 The Macallan Sherry Matured 18 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $3999. 00

    $47988.00 Dozen
    ABV: 43%

Note: Product has come from a private collection and as such has some minor scuffing/scratches/handling marks. Actual product pictured.

Produced from whiskies distilled in 1997 and earlier, this displays the impeccable pedigree of 18 Year Old Macallan of which critics have long been consistent and loud in their praise. The distillery's benchmark excellence is showcased in the 18 Year Old which is exclusively matured in selected Sherry oak casks from Jerez, Spain.

Tasting note: The flashy polished copper colour is a pleasure to behold. Superb purity to the nose with raisin cake and orange zest openings. Air contact finds baking spices, but drops the intensity. Rebounds in the final pass with an impressive burst of hazelnut / dried apricot / rancio / fruit cake / cocoa - in short, a classic sherry infusion. The spices have settled compared to the 12YO - as you'd expect. This is all class and polish, with a beautiful integration of malt, dried fruits and sweet nuttiness on the palate followed by a gentle flourish of spicy raisin cake at the finish. Great poise, being neither too sweet or too dry. Softly spoken yet confident, fine tuned, never overdone. An arm chair dram for quiet contemplation. 43% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews… Nose: Deeply attractive, honeyed with prickling wood spice and brandy butter. Palate: Rich and lingering, yielding warm raisiny, sherried and oaky notes. Finish: Long, oaky-peppery, distinguished. Smoky at the last. Comment: An aristocratic and balanced Macallan, though drier than some recent 18 year releases.

Rattray's "Cask Collection" series, whether from a barrel, a hogshead or a butt, represent single cask whiskies made available in extremely limited quantities, often no more than a couple of hundred bottles for each cask. Distilled in 1995 and matured in a Bourbon hogshead, this highly unusual Macallan was bottled in 2015 at natural strength. Indie Macallan bottlings aren't common, especially single barrel, non-chill filtered, straight from the cask expressions. Total outturn for this A.D. Rattray release was 310 bottles.

Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Soft and rounded with honey, oranges, homemade marmalade, fruit gums. Palate: Exceptionally smooth and balanced. Sweet fruit and milk chocolate with a creamy finish. Conclusion: The smoothest and finest spirit there is…

Cadenheads spoil us with a Macallan from a single x Bourbon cask and with a grand age statement at a very reasonable price. Note that the equivalent official distillery bottling will set you back $3000+. We have less than a handful available from a measly outturn of just 156 bottles. 51.4% Alc./Vol.

    * For those puzzled by the 'Macallan-Glenlivet' title on the label, history suggests the use of the 'Glenlivet' suffix was a convention in earlier times as means of association with Speyside and / or the Glenlivet distillery's enviable reputation. Tamnavulin, Glen Moray, Speyburn and Tomintoul all still carry "-Glenlivet" in their registered names. However, the suffix is now only used on the labels of some independent bottlers. Why persist with this terminology? Mark Watt at Cadenheads simply says, "Using the original name of the distillery is something that we have always historically done".

Macallan without sherry? Yes, these bottlings can be great too. Macallan abandoned their 'nothing but sherry' policy a while ago. With or without it, the quality of spirit more often than not stands out. Cadenheads prove it with this unusual age statement. See the review below from Malt Maniac, Serge Valentin. (Serge recently reviewed his 15,000th whisky, so he should know what he's talking about!) We've just a few of the 162 bottles drawn from a single x Bourbon barrel. The price / age ratio speaks for itself. Comes non chill filtered.

Other reviews... A brand new one that reminds me of the times when we were getting as excited as cats whenever an unsherried Macallan was in sight. Agreed, quite the opposite these days ;-). Colour: pale gold. Nose: aaaah! This one’s as fresh and fruity as a 5 years old, but it’s just stunning because of the added complexity that only age, whichever the cask and its state, can bring to any whisky. That, you cannot replicate with more of that dreadful ‘wood technology’ that’s so en vogue these days beyond Hadrian’s wall. Mirabelles, quinces, apricots, soft vanilla, and this lovely wine that they make in the Pyreneans, called Jurançon moelleux. Mouth: Macallan totally au naturel, slightly rough, with pineapples, bananas, kiwis, and more mirabelles. Or say all those fruits macerated in good artisan kirsch. Let’s see what water does to it, just in the name of science (while the nose got rather maltier and almost bready)… Yeah, very malty, with a typical Macallan fatness, but I wouldn’t say it’s the best swimmer ever. It doesn’t need water anyway. Finish: long, fruity, barleyish. More oranges. Comments: going up again ;-). An extremely interesting – and good – ‘wild’ Macallan. 89 points - Serge Valentin, whiskyfun.com

Distilled in 1990 and bottled in Januaray 2021 from a refill hogshead (DL14631), this is Macallan as few will have experienced it before, non chill filtered and natural colour (official distillery bottlings are typically chill filtered). Plus it's cask strength at 44.4% Alc./Vol. The whisky comes handsomely packaged in a heavy base bottle with dovetailed wooden box and its own individually numbered certificate. According to the Laing's tasting notes, it sounds like a cracking cask... "Wonderfully refined as the nose opens with a burnt sugar on citrus style, mellow silky and subtle on the palate showing some of the orange citrus, ginger nuts and hint of copper amongst the tablet and liquorice, all being neatly replicated in the burnt orange pith, gently spiced finale". 209 bottles are on offer worldwide. The highest tier of Douglas Laing's current collection is the XOP (Xtra Old Particular) label. These are the “family jewels”, each release being a one of a kind, all natural whisky.

Distilled in 1990 and bottled August 2015 from a refill hogshead (DL10878), this is Macallan as few will have experienced it before, non chill filtered and natural colour (official distillery bottlings are typically chill filtered). The price/age ratio on this release is quite exceptional - plus it's cask strength at 49.7% Alc./Vol. The presentation is another highlight - the whisky comes handsomely packaged in a wax-dipped bottle with dovetailed wooden box and its own individually numbered certificate. 279 bottles are on offer worldwide. Please note: slight cracks in the bottle's wax seal are not uncommon. This is not a packaging fault.

Tasting notes from the bottler... The nose is fresh and clean initially, warming to flambéed banana, syrup and burnt sugar. On the palate, that banana is still there! Plus mellow honey, toffee and a crunched sugar quality. The finish is gently spiced and subtly fructiferous, showing now apples, barley and molasses.

Expect elderflower, fresh green apples, sweet nectarines and a hint of buttered toast on the nose, followed by smooth, delicate flavours of apple blossom, juicy pears and subtle clove spice. The finish is medium-length and brings rich oak, golden barley and more hints of green apple. Single cask bottlings of the Macallan don’t crop up very often, so we don't expect this to last long. Bottled with our chill filtering or colour additions at a natural cask strength of 51.1% Alc./Vol.

The huge range of vintage Macallans once on offer are all but a memory for us. They were selected from The Macallan distilled in the 1930s and bottled in the 1970s, and also from a selection of the very best casks at the peak of their maturation complexity from the vintage years 1926 to 1972. We sold out of our official distillery bottlings over a decade ago. These were then fetching around $4000+ / bottle.

This is a collector's opportunity to secure one of Speyside’s most iconic single malts from the heyday of this distillery: 22 year old Macallan in full-on sherried form. Purists should note - Macallan built its reputation during the early 1980s and ‘90s in large part by emphasising hard line traditional practises - 100% Sherry maturation and a predominant use of a special variety of barley called “Golden Promise”, now rarely used, but traditionally highly prized for its rich, nutty flavour. If Macallan last used its original ratio of Golden Promise barley in 1993, then this will be near the last made from the same. The taste of ‘true’ Macallan may not be had for much longer at any price!

This is a collector's opportunity to secure one of Speyside’s most iconic single malts from the heyday of this distillery: 32 year old Macallan in full-on sherried form.

Wow! What a price for a 35 year old Maca! And according to veteran taster, Serge Valentin, quite a quirky bottling. Sounds fascinating. One only. Bottled in 2008. Some minor cellar bloom, otherwise excellent condition.

Other reviews... Nose: this is truly uber-fruity! Very heavy notes of bananas and tangerines, reminding me of some Lochsides. Very unusual for a Macallan. Also quite some apricot jam. Mouth: very fruity again, with a lot of strawberries and nutmeg. Passion fruit ice cream. Again, certainly not a classic Macallan, whether sherried or not. 43% Alc./Vol.

1945 Gordon & Macphail Speymalt Macallan 68 Year Old Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $11999. 00

    ABV: 45.1%
Distilled in 1945 towards the end of World War II (Macallan was one of the few allowed to keep distilling during the war) and bottled in 2013, this extraordinary 68 year old, great grandfather malt is a genuine piece of whisky history. Bottled at cask strength, but reduced to an understandable 45.1% after such extended maturation exclusively in first fill Sherry Hogsheads, some historical perspective helps one appreciate this whisky all the more.

Should you be so fortunate to pour a glass, consider that whilst this whisky was beginning its long maturing sleep, Hitler committed suicide and Germany surrendered with May 8 declared V-E Day.
The US dropped atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
The ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Calculator), the first all-electronic computer was completed, and Sir Alexander Fleming, Ernst Boris Chain, and Sir Howard Florey were honoured with Nobel Prizes for the discovery of penicillin.

It represents an increasingly rare opportunity to secure a future investment or realise the whisky experience of a lifetime. This bottling from one the greatest conservators of liquid history in Scotland, Gordon & Macphail, comes with the highest provenance.

    Other reviews....
I think I haven’t seriously tried this well-known baby since 2004. According to the label, this version was ‘triple cask matured’. The rate things are going I guess we’ll see quadruple cask bottlings in 2010. Colour: straw. Nose: very malty, very cereally, with whiffs of ripe apples and pears flying around and hints of mint. No thrill but good balance, a perfect access-category malt so far, reminding me of Cardhu, Knockando or... Chivas Regal. Mouth: sweet, easy, not weak, malty and grainy, with some caramel, marshmallows, orange cake and a little liquorice. Hints of toasted bread. Finish: rather short but balanced, malty. Roasted nuts. Comments: not bad at all, hard to say more, this one doesn’t inspire me any maltoporn.

Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Creamy butterscotch with a hint of toffee apple, candied orange, vanilla custard and newly felled oak. Taste: Deliciously honeyed, wood spices and citrus, balanced with raisins and caramel. Finish: Oak lingers, warm, sweet and drying.

A very rare investment grade bottle of Macallan aged for over 25 years in sherry casks.

A less common presentation with some leather straps holding the front panel on. Actual product pictured.

If you're after more detail on the provenance of this bottling series, this is from the Macallan Marketing department in relation to another bottle we had:
"We stopped referring to our 25 years old as the Anniversary Malt in 2004 but the wooden Burgundy box was only in place for less than 2 years so I would suggest that your bottle was released in 2002/3. The year of distillation was removed a year or two before that as this conveyed that all the whisky contained therein was distilled in that year, whereas this was not always the case. There is frequently older whisky contained in the vatting... the bottle will contain whisky distilled in 1978 or before." 43% Alc./Vol.

Officially discontinued back in 2013, we've seen the asking price for these recently hit £199 in the UK. Snap it up!

Any one following the price path of old and discontinued Macallans knows that this is a blue chip distillery when it comes to investor upside. Even younger age statements have out-performed expectations. Given the emphatic praise for the 10 year old from all quarters and its 100% Sherry cask credentials, this is a no-brainer. Expect to be paying much, much more for these historical curios in the years to come - if you can find them at all.

Tasting note: Bright copper colour. Aromas are soft and sweet - delicate scents of honey, dried fruits, orange peel and cocoa merge with subtle toasty/ cereal notes. Off-dry palate has good concentration with sherry input supporting toasty cereals and spice followed by a juicy back palate burst. Clean, drying aftertaste of honey, malt and soft spice. A perfect introduction to an increasingly rare genre. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Nose: Bewitching balance of heady sherry, spice and wood. Subtle rhubarby and smoky suggestions. Palate: Big, creamy nutty and spicy. An obvious rich sherry character prevails. Finish: Lingering and soothing with wood spices and soft peat. Comment: A king-pin malt which never disappoints. 40% Alc./Vol
    Rating: 90- www.whiskymag.com

...Oloroso appears to be the big noise here, but clever, almost meaty, incursions of spice offer an extra dimension; fruity, yet bitter-sweet: dense yet teasingly light in places; chewy fruit and the old Macallan silk is back; creamy cherries and mildly under-ripe plum ensures a sweet-sour style; traces of vanilla and barley remind us of the oak and the barley, but the fruit reverbrates for some while, as does some annoying caramel. For a great many of us it is with the Mac 10 our great Speyside odyssey began. It has to be said that in recent years it has been something of a shadow of its former great self. However, this is the best version that I have come across for a while. Not perhaps in the same league as those bottlings in the 1970s which made us re-evaluate the possibilities of single malt. But fine enough to show just how great this whisky can be when the butts have not been tainted and, towards the end, the balance between barley and grape is a relatively equal one.

An exceptionally old indie Macallan, distilled in 1993 that also comes with a fair asking price. Finished in a single sherry butt for 64 months and bottled in January 2019 for Signatory's 30th Anniversary series. Just over 600 were produced with Australia receiving a tiny allocation. Praise from Malt Maniac, Serge Valentin below.

Other reviews... This baby’s been finished in a sherry butt for 64 months, which equals exactly 64/12=5.33 years. So more double-maturation if you ask me, or old-style re-racking. Let’s see… Colour: amber coffee. Nose: ah, this is different. I’m reminded of some old amontillado, walnut wine, gentian, turmeric, dried figs, warm praline, chestnut purée, some curious form of mentholated celeriac (who would do that?) Some oak too, but with few fruits, which is unusual. After five minutes, it got rather very mentholy and pine-y. Did that come from the sherry cask (doubt it) or from the original hogshead? Were these aromas the reasons why they did this finishing? I know, who needs such useless questions… Mouth: wait wait wait, but this is post-war Macallan-like! Smoke, saps, burnt fruits, brandy, leather, tobacco, mushrooms, a little balsamico, a touch of rancio, those crazy jams, a lot of puréed chestnuts again, pine nuts, roasted pecans… And quite a lot of tobacco, which still makes it ‘a dry one’. Finish: long, roasted and smoked, chocolaty, nutty, dry. Orange bitters. Comments: finishings are always scary because you can’t help wondering ‘why did they have to do that?’ but in this case, I can’t see who would complain. Excellent results after those 5.33 years in a butt. I mean…

    Bottle

A highpoint in the latest Boutique-y shipment is this near three decades old Macallan, a legend of Speyside. Massively popular and always in constant demand, this is Boutique-y's second batch to carry an age statement. The label once again references the distillery's curiously small stills (though not quite as small as the label suggests).

Jim Murray rated a 25 year old 97 points (same series, different batch). Could this live up to the same standard? The bottlers describe batch 6 as "Stewed red fruit-like with a little rhubarb supported by a malt core and having great balance, finishing long with fruity coffee notes." 43.5% Alc./Vol. Very limited.

Please note: slight cracks in the bottle's wax seal are not uncommon. This is not a packaging fault.

During the regular nosing which each cask of The Macallan undergoes to ascertain its individual characteristics, it was found that a shipment of particularly pronounced, resonant casks had created a distinctive, dark and profoundly complex malt whisky, unmistakably The Macallan, but with a strong character and style all of its own. In view of the exceptional character and complexity of the whisky in these casks and the current demand from connoisseurs for rare malts at the very top end, we agreed that Gran Reserva should be bottled as a stand alone malt whisky.

Named "Gran Reserva" in acknowledgement of its close involvement with the finest sherry, this rare malt has emerged from over 18 years of cask ageing suffused with rich and complex spicy characters, delicious dried fruit flavours with citrus orange set against a background of rich resinous wood lending the whisky a profound depth of character. Gran Reserva's richness of colour, its full, resinous, spicy character and complex fruit flavours mark it out as a malt steeped in the impeccable pedigree of The Macallan, owing much to both its Scottish ancestry and its Spanish oak sherry wood heritage. The design of the Gran Reserva packaging echoes this pedigree and marries classic Macallan imagery with Spanish themes. 40% Alc./Vol.

    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $350. 00
    Bottle
    $4200.00 Dozen
    ABV: 44.2%

Late 2023 saw the launch of the third release in Macallan's Harmony Collection. Created in collaboration with Paul McCartney's daughters, Stella and Mary McCartney, it's a celebration of the lush, fertile lands of Scotland that connect all those who have stood upon them for generations. The presentation box features photography by Mary McCartney of The Macallan Estate and the team at Macallan has reciprocated, taking inspiration from the Scottish grasslands to create an expression redolent of warm meadows and mature barley fields, with a rich, citrus-scented finish derived from a combination of both sherry seasoned oak and bourbon casks. Also notable in this release is the re-use of natural materials in the packaging, creating beauty from resources at the end of their natural lives. In this case, discarded meadow cuttings have been given new life in the presentation box and bottle labels. 44.2% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Ex-bourbon and sherry-seasoned oak. By rule, when there's no age statement, and yet a hefty price (220€), there is a story, in this case a collaboration with sisters Stella and Mary McCartney. Colour: gold. Nose: yet again this slightly rubbery leafiness, we're actually extremely close to the Triple Cask, just with a little more oomph. Fruit peel, orange zests, some flowers again (honeysuckle), then ripe bananas and a little light rum. Mouth: indeed you would almost believe they used the same juice as that of the Triple Oak. Some oak spices, green teas, bitter almonds, a few raisins, allspice, indeed a little rubber, cinnamon rolls… Finish: medium long, on teas and little demerara sugar, while the aftertaste remains rather leafy. More green tea and a little clove, typical active oak seasoned with young sherry. Comments: long live all the McCartneys – isn't Sir Paul NAS too? 85 points - whiskyfun.com

A circa 2000 Macallan bottling at an age statement that was very seldom seen until the launch of the now discontinued Fine Oak series, and more recently in 2020 with the release of a newly presented Double Cask edition. This however, is a genuine curio that promises authentic Macallan sherry character, less the price tag of the slightly older 18 year old. These rarely surface. This could well be your first and last chance to complete your Concept collection - at least at any reasonable price. The eye-catching edition celebrates the artistry and creativity of whisky-making via a collaboration with David Carson, one of the more influential and revolutionary contemporary graphic designers of the last few decades. Inspired by his time spent at The Macallan Estate working alongside Whisky Maker, Polly Logan, Carson designed a presentation that reflects his work for magazines like 'Beach Culture' and 'Ray Gun' in the 1990s. Carson brought a new approach to type and page design breaking with traditional layout systems. Here his distinctive experimental typography makes for one of the more visually stimulating limited editions to date. 40.8% Alc./Vol. Travel retail exclusive. Now sold out at Macallan.

Other reviews... I find it fantastic that they would not write it 'CON' and later 'CEPT' anymore. Life is about learning. Cask bill here includes sherry butts, bourbon barrels and just 'American oak'. I would suppose that's virgin white oak. Now I don't know what the strength of 40.8% means. Very old whiskies or just cheap ultra-reduction ? There's also something 'digital' about this bottle, but we now know that all what us humans need is 'less digital' rather than more. The pendulum is swinging back and this is all getting very tricky for brands. Colour: gold. Nose: massive, immense, huge chocolate. We're simply having hot chocolate somewhere in Mittelleuropa. Say Vienna? Also, hold on, apple juice. Mouth: all right, this is very good and the lousy low strength doesn't even feel. Typical Macallan 'body'. Mead, raisins, honeys, flowery teas, spicy cake (Stolle), old desert wine, mullein syrup, quince jelly… I really enjoy this and at 40.8%, you can drink a lot of it. My, with such statements, they'll shut down this web site sooner or later. Bring 'em on. Finish: medium, extremely chocolaty. Pralines, ganache, or anything by my favourite Parisian chocolatiers. No, no names, I wouldn't want to ruffle any feathers. Comments: very good. At least, the juice isn't digital. 87 points - whiskyfun.com

The Macallan Rare Cask Red Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) - 2021 release
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $499. 00
    Bottle
    $5988.00 Dozen
    ABV: 43%

Like last years, the 2021 edition represents one of the distillery's "finest and rarest sherry seasoned oak casks". Or as Sarah Burgess, Lead Whisky Maker puts it, "Every oak cask has its own personality, with little differences that make them unique. From time to time The Macallan Whisky Mastery Team discovers casks maturing in our warehouses which stand out from the others."

While many have questioned whether there's actually any vintage variation in these annual bottlings, few have the chance to open them to taste. However, the 2021 is reported to be "way better than early batches" by the prolific Serge Valentin at whiskyfun.com. Review below.

Other reviews... There, one of those nasty NASses. Is the age really unmentionable here? I remember 2018's version was pretty cheap (WF 78). I mean, cheap on your palate, it is a very expensive bottle (300€ for a NAS, three times the price for the fantastic 15 yo). Colour: gold. Nose: eh? Don't I find metal polish, old coins, old copper (grandma's kettle) and a lot of acacia blossom and honey? And drops of trappiste beer? And biscuits? Madeleines? Shoe polish? Glazed chestnut? Mouth: I find the 15 superior, but they are not that far away. This one's more rustic, a little gritty and rubbery around the edges, perhaps a little too gingery too, but I would not cry foul, it's a pleasant, malty, honeyed, rather old-school palate. Now is it 300€ pleasant? Finish: medium, a tad 'cooked', malty and toffee-ed. The usual aspects in the aftertaste (remember, coffee, chocolate and marmalade) plus a little pencil shaving. Comments: some sides make me think of some lovely armagnac. I mean, 50€ armagnac. In any case, way better than earlier batches in my book. 85 points - whiskyfun.com

Notes from the producers... Soft aromas of vanilla with rich raisin lead the journey of discovery into this single malt whisky, followed by a sweet fusion of fresh apple, lemon and orange. Intense sweet raisin flavours dominate the palate, before giving way to vanilla and dark chocolate, with layers of light citrus zest. The finish is long, rich and velvety to offer a decadent whisky experience that will leave a lasting impression.

It's been a while since the thirty year age statement has been offered as an official Macallan release. The last incarnation was under the 'Fine Oak' label (circa 2007), then in 2018, so apart from indie releases, the classification is relatively rare. Aged in both sherry-seasoned American and European oak, this is the oldest in the 'Double Cask' series so far, defined by aromas and flavours of sweet toffee, ginger, dried fruits and spice. It's labelled from the date of release rather than the date of distillation. Very limited stocks. 43% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the producers... Nose – Fresh honeycomb, sweet toffee, red apple, fig and vanilla pod. Palate – A smooth melody of cinnamon, ginger, Madagascan vanilla, dried fruits and oak. Finish – Sweet oak, soft spice and toffee.

A Macallan from circa 2009, initially released for the Travel Retail market and now discontinued.

Other reviews... Triple cask as well. Colour: pale gold. Nose: a little more oomph than in the 12, with a little more oak and grass, then farmyard, apple peelings and hints of flints as well as a little smoke. Not unpleasant at all and rather complex. Develops more on bubblegum and a little parsley. Mouth: smooth and very sweet, with more oomph than in the 12 once again. Apple compote, honey, toasted brioche and a little sweet oak, with a little mint in the background. Quite some vanilla. Finish: medium long, balanced, malty and honeyed, some tannins in the aftertaste. Comments: very decent, with more sherry than the 12.  79 points - whiskyfun.com

The Macallan M Decanter Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) - 2019 Release
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $12999. 00
    Bottle
    $155988.00 Dozen
    ABV: 45.9%

The Macallan M 2019 continues the distillery's collaboration with the world’s best crystal maker, Lalique and legendary designer, Fabien Baron. Fashioned from the highest grade crystal, the six facets of the decanter reflect the wonderful, deep, natural colour of the whisky like a cut, highly polished diamond. Housing precious liquid reserves, it includes Macallan distilled all the way back to 1940, its deep rosewood colour derived purely from the 500 litre sherry seasoned casks, butts and puncheons it was matured in. Most were made of Spanish oak. Expect delicate aromas and flavours of orange oil entwined with liquorice and dark chocolate notes, masterfully balanced with a hint of vanilla sweetness. 45.9% Alc./Vol.

Notes from Macallan... Nose: Rich vanilla cream sweetness with light wisps of smoke and an earthy dark chocolate sweetness. Palate: Initially a rich combination of dried fruit and citrus and slowly this rolls into a rich peat smoke. It is a wonderful contrast, it is almost as if the whisky comes in two parts allowing an insight to the flavour before being enveloped in sweet peat notes. The light elements of smoked dried fruits and an almondy nuttiness makes it feel almost chewy. Finish: Long sweet dried fruit with a lengthy sweet peat flavour.

The Macallan Double Cask 18 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) - Annual 2021 Release
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $599. 00
    Bottle
    $7188.00 Dozen
    ABV: 43%

Macallan's 'Double Cask' 18 Year Old was matured for almost two decades in a combination of American and European oak - all oloroso seasoned. Whisky Maker, Kirsteen Campbell's notes suggest this year the sherry input could be more profound than ever, describing aromas and flavours of "Caramelised ginger, Christmas cake fruit, mulled wine spices, dark Jamaican gingerbread, sticky toffee pudding, crème Brûlée and orange zest." What's more, the colour of the whisky is about as dark as the regular 'sherry cask' 18 year old. Invariably on the short list of single malt aficionados, these annual releases are already catching the attention of collectors. 43% Alc./Vol.

The Macallan The Archival Series Folio 6 Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $2999. 00
    Bottle
    $35988.00 Dozen
    ABV: 43%

Earlier editions of the Archival series have achieved some extraordinary upsides on the secondary market. This edition continues the theme of rediscovering The Macallan ads of the 1970s, 80s and 90s, alongside the minds that created them.

Folio 6 celebrates a wonderfully witty advert, which cleverly featured ‘The Chairman’ as a Scotsman dancing the Highland fling over a pen and brush, the symbols of the advertising team of Holmes and Salaman. At the time, The Macallan Chairman was Allan Shiach, who as a writer himself, was known to suggest the occasional idea to the brand’s creative team. Naturally, the two admen tended to bridle a little at these suggestions from above – but of course when it was The Macallan Chairman they could hardly demur. Brows were furrowed. Misgivings were muttered. But the admen stuck to the creative task, and ultimately chose to feature the Chairman himself in their response to the gauntlet he had thrown down. The resulting campaign remains one of the brand’s most memorable, and to many, the most amusing. Collectable. 43% Alc./Vol.

Note: Product has come from a private collection and as such has some minor scuffing/scratches/handling marks. Actual product not pictured.

For many, the 18 year old is Macallan's benchmark for excellence. Matured exclusively in hand-picked sherry casks from Jerez, Spain, the 2020 edition sports the newer tapered bottle design inspired by the Macallan Rare Cask.

Other reviews... [2018 release] Like previous releases, this was matured in sherry-seasoned oak casks. Jaffa oranges, cloves, cinnamon, ginger, and dried fruits on the nose, plus warm leather. The palate is rich and spicy, with more orange, vanilla, and burning logs. Smoky sherry, ginger, dried fruits, and seasoned oak in the full finish.

The other was the 'Master’s Edition' aged in both ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks. Both of these whiskies were NAS and were reportedly discontinued a few years later. At the time of writing, this is one of only a few we've seen from the secondary market. 40% Alc./Vol.

A rare version of Macallan's 25 year old Sherry oak. Released for a short time in a striking red wooden box, these editions were originbally available between 2002 and 2004 and were the first bottlings from which Macallan dropped the year of distillation from the label. There are no records of how many bottles of Macallan 25 year old were released annually – even Macallan say they did not keep a record. 43% Alc./Vol.

Australia's largest selection of old & Rare Macallans.

Macallan built its reputation during the early 1980s and ‘90s in large part by emphasising hard line traditional practises - 100% Sherry maturation and a predominant use of a special variety of barley called “Golden Promise”, now rarely used, but highly prized by distillers for its rich, nutty flavour. Macallan last employed its original ratio of Golden Promise barley in 1993, so increasingly rare bottlings prior to this period offer purity and awe in equal measure.
