Lady of the Glen Single Casks Direct Import Offer

Gregor Hannah is a new entrant to the whisky market, having worked to set up his company based in Fife since 2009. He was first attracted to whisky through his father, who was a bagpiper who used to receive bottles of thanks for piping at weddings. The collection became an early source of inspiration. Now the director of 'Hannah Whisky Merchants', Gregor is building a reputation as an independent bottler of single cask whiskies under the Lady of the Glen brand.

Says Gregor, "I believe the role of a good independent bottler is not just to release a cask unless it’s really, really high-quality. You want to take the casks and put your own character on it. You want to finish it or rerack it, to produce something that is truly unique because that’s the beauty of independent bottling... In each outrun I try to follow a guideline of one affordable release, one sherried release and one release over 15 years old. This is an attempt to try to appeal to different buyers but it’s not always possible meet this criteria. Once I have these three categories ticked off, I’ll release other stock alongside them."

The current collection is as successful as any we can recall. Gregor Hannah is clearly a dab hand when it comes to selecting and finishing some stand-out casks.

2009 Lady of the Glen MacDuff Single Cask #4093 13 Year Old Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $150. 00
    Bottle
    $1800.00 Dozen
    ABV: 57.6%

As one of Dewar's five malt distilleries, Macduff remains an obscure seaside producer located in a fishing port of the same name. The operation was closed for part of 2022 for upgrades to the equipment. While it's too early to tell if there will be a change of style, keep an eye out for pre-renovation bottlings like this.  A fresh medium-bodied whisky, the nose has a dried grass edge developing crystallised lemons and white pepper, but needs coaxing. A rich rounded entry follows in a chewy malt with cereal, tea biscuit, honey and cocoa flavours and a vibrant finish. It's perfect everyday drinking that softens and harmonises nicely with a splash of water. 57.6% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. Fully matured in a refill hogshead.

Notes from the bottlers... Founded in 1960 in Banff on the mouth of the river Deveron. Recognised for medium bodied and sweet distillate with nutty and spice notes. Another rarely seen make in the independent bottler scene in recent years, this typically dry and nutty distillate has been matured and bottled at just the right time to capture the essence of the style. Light approachable but complex at the same time. The tasting revealed, honeyed apricot, spiced apple and nutmeg.

2012 Lady of the Glen Dailuaine Single Cask #307208 10 Year Old Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $150. 00
    Bottle
    $1800.00 Dozen
    ABV: 51.7%

Dailuaine is not at the top of most drinker's lists, mainly because it's dedicated as one of Diageo's twenty eight blend fillers. Sherry, fruit cake, subtle smoke and a slightly oily mouthfeel are typical, so this is a novel bottling so far as the distillery style goes. Beyond a slightly green, reticent first sniff is a surprisingly soft, elegant young Dailuaine with an easy-going biscuity malt character and snappy oak to finish. Water significantly amplifies dried fruits from the wine casks, in particular, apricots, also juicing up the mid-palate several notches. 51.7% Alc./Vol. Sauternes finish. Non-chill filtered. 177 bottles.

Notes from the bottlers... Re-racked into a fresh Sauternes barrique for notes of apricot sweetness. The combination of the Sauternes cask and heavier spirit has offered a very well balanced and rounded final product with focus on the oak and fruity notes. The tasting revealed, orange drizzle cake, apricot and custard creams.

    Bottle
    $1800.00 Dozen
    ABV: 56.3%

Drawn from an inventory of re-charred ex-sherry casks, this heavy distillate was re-racked into a freshly re-charred cask for added vanilla and honey notes. It's a curious Balmenach nose mixing marmalade with coconut, cocoa and oak shavings. There are some delicious bittersweet dark chocolate threads throughout the weighty middle, drying out and spicing up significantly at the finish. Otherwise a lush, straightforward and pretty explosive malt that will stretch out your dollar value with dilution. 54.5% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. 318 bottles.

Notes from the bottlers... coffee grounds, vanilla tablet and dried fruit.

    Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $160. 00
    Bottle
    $1920.00 Dozen
    ABV: 61.8%

This is a mainland peated spirit that's merged with an x-Amarone wine barrique. Rather than being burly and brooding like an Islay, the peat is nuanced by rich fruit'n'nut chocolate and dried red berry notes. Ample spices ramp up the palate in a full-bodied, full-throttle attack that fuses lanolin and oily, sweet peat reek, slowly drying with suggestions of chocolate and berry sponge cake. Bold enough to be undiminished by water, completionists can confidently add this to a shortlist of peated malts that will give Islays a run for their money. 61.8% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. 315 bottles.

Notes from the bottlers... Ruadh Maor is the peated distillate produced at Glenturret distillery. The distillate has a light fruity character with soft peated notes. Matured in a HHD then finished in a first fill Veneta Botti ex-amarone barrique for 2 years. The tasting revealed, salted pretzel, smoked meat and red fruits.

    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $140. 00
    Bottle
    $1680.00 Dozen
    ABV: 57%

Not especially distinguished by its low-key, fresh grain-store-like aromas, in the mouth this flips into a rich, textural and easily approachable Inchgower with the malt augmented by Virgin oak. The wood is at first slightly assertive and some of the distillery's trademark coastal freshness feels diminished, but the juicy malt recovers with a tangible salted cracker / saline edge at the finish to retain its aperitif standing. It gets better with air contact and holds up well, even with ample water. 57% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the producers... A light distillate with a nutty and waxy character. Matured in a hogshead for the majority of its life before being finished in an American virgin oak barrel for added depth, sweetness and floral notes. The tasting revealed blossom honey, fresh ginger and parma violets.

    $199. 00
    Bottle
    $2388.00 Dozen
    ABV: 46.9%

Featherweight opening aromas need time to blow off acetone, revealing a prototypical grain that delivers the best of young and old; Vanilla biscuits, apple pie, creamy soda, hazelnut and distant milk chocolate notes come wrapped up in a silky texture reminiscent of drier-styled Guatemalan rum. It gets more buttery and textural with every pass. Thirty years in oak but refusing to admit its age, vibrancy is one of its most praiseworthy characteristics. The slightly heavier mouthfeel compared with other grains is due to the use of maize rather than wheat. 46.9% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. 147 bottles. Fully matured in an ex-bourbon barrel.

Notes from the bottlers... custard cream, liquorice and buttered pancakes.

    Islay, SCOTLAND
    $230. 00
    Bottle
    $2760.00 Dozen
    ABV: 55.3%

The dessert dram in the new outturn is from a very active PX cask. Ginger snaps and sulphur compete with dates and coffee cake. Slowly the spices start to push through, with cinnamon and allspice on both the nose and palate. Walnut fudge, raisin cake and fruity dark chocolate build at the finish. There are some bitter marmalade moments too. This sherry-drenched malt won't appeal to everyone, but the thick texture and chocolate salted-almond come back will more than compensate most; and the length is impressive - even if the sherry is almost overflowing. 55.3% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. 320 bottles.

Notes from the bottlers... Founded in 1881 on the northern shore of Islay. An unpeated distillate with citrus fruits and honey notes. Matured in an ex-oloroso sherry butt and finished in an ex-Pedro Ximenez hogshead. The tasting revealed, honey glaze, baked apple and frangipane.

2007 Lady of the Glen Auchentoshan Single Cask #4200 14 Year Old Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)

    $160. 00

    $1920.00 Dozen
    ABV: 54.9%

Famous for being distilled three times instead of the usual two (meaning it comes off the final still at a super high 162 proof), for a long time Auchentoshan was dismissed as making rather simplistic whiskies. In the last few decades, owners Beam Suntory have invested heavily in re-vamping the brand with a slew great new additions. The house style is sometimes described as green, herbal or lemony. Short fermentation provides a cereal note which acts as a grounding flavour during maturation as well as balancing high-toned citrus. All of those characteristics are captured here. The bristling barley bouquet comes with a twist of citrus, while the slightly grassy palate is momentarily juicy and loaded with feisty spices at the finish, and there are traces of bitter lemon amongst the cereals. All up it's an inviting and zesty Auchentoshan as you will find, demonstrating that some of the most impressive bottlings still come from independents. 54.9% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. 235 bottles.

Notes from the bottlers... Patiently matured in a traditional refill hogshead for 14 years and 11 months for mellowness and vanilla notes. The tasting revealed, honeydew melon, drizzly honey and lemon wafer.

2011 Lady of the Glen Longmorn Single Cask #974 10 Year Old Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $160. 00
    Bottle
    $1920.00 Dozen
    ABV: 55.8%

Great to see Longmorn in an Indie line up and one that hasn't been interfered with by any wood finishings. If it seems like some green fruit notes are holding back the bouquet, the palate offers much more in the way of dried coconut, vanilla fudge and good old Longmorn honeyed cereal character, backed up by an active Bourbon cask which adds a light Kentucky edge. That's topped off by a little lemon zest. The balance is excellent for a cask-strength tenner, and it handles plenty of water without losing too much definition. Erratic supply combined with Pernod Ricard's crazy price tag of well over $200 for the distillery's flagship makes this a value buy. 55.8% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. 246 bottles. First fill Bourbon cask matured.

Notes from the bottlers... Located just outside Elgin and noted for its use in premium blends, the distillate is recognised as floral and fruity with a medium body. Matured in a first fill bourbon barrel for notes of vanilla and coconut. The tasting revealed dried pineapple, lemon shortbread and fudge.

    ABV: 56.2%

Royal Brackla is the third leg in Dewar’s single malt portfolio and the largest, yet probably the least well-known. Since Dewar's Master Blender, Stephanie Macleod realised that the new make is perfectly matched to sherry finishings, there's been a steady flow of new releases. Lady of the Glen continues that theme with oloroso and Brackla coming together in a harmony of honey, sweet spices and juicy dried fruits. Toasty cereals and dark chocolate complete the gently bittersweet finish. Holds its character well with water. 56.2% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. 171 bottles.

Notes from the bottlers... A fruity distillate with honey, malt and spicy notes. Matured for the majority of its life in a refill barrel then finished in an ex-oloroso sherry cask for notes of cloves, red cherries, ginger cake and cloves.

    $160. 00
    Bottle
    $1920.00 Dozen
    ABV: 54.8%

Another solid example of this ever-reliable make, and with a longer than average three-year finishing in a 'soft' sherry cask. Heavily smoked ham, antiseptic, wild honey and smouldering potpourri feature on the nose. The mouthcoating attack is complexed by a dry, nutty sherry that barely cuts through the peat. Drops of lime juice and hints of grilled pineapple freshen things up, then it's medicinal peat and Fisherman's Friend cough lozenges all the way to the finish. Sherry has integrated the smoke and citrus, adding sophistication, but the profile remains emphatically Islay. 54.8% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered. 316 bottles.

Notes from the bottlers... barbecued lime, liquorice toffee and cracked black pepper.

    Bottle
    $4788.00 Dozen
    ABV: 58.4%

Thirty to forty-year-old 'Burgies might set you back thousands of dollars, so consider this a relative bargain. The Pernod Ricard distillery remains a critical component in the mega-conglomerate Ballantine’s blend. Unfortunately very, very little gets released under the Glenburgie label, so it's not a name widely recognised here or overseas. Like more famous Speysiders such as Glen Grant or Glenlivet, it has a reputation for long ageing. Lady of the Glen somehow procured this 27-year-old expression and a handful of bottles have reached our shores. After nearly three decades in a refill hogshead, the alcohol remains considerable, so it's no surprise that the nose is a little spirity at first. Five minutes in the glass rewards your patience with beefy, malty notes infused with orange spice cake, sandalwood and beeswax. That's reflected in a deep, brooding dram boasting flavours sweet oak, cream sponge cake, light beeswax and rancio punctuated by lively spices. Lashings of fruit'n'nut chocolate and vanillan oak finish off a fabulously 'malty' malt of serious depth. 58.4 % Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. 218 bottles. Collectable.

Notes from the bottlers... Founded in 1810 and recognised for a light fruity distillate and its manual production process. Matured entirely in a refill hogshead for 27 years for a mellow character and honey with marzipan. This magnificent well aged Speysider needs no great explanation. This classic example of the make offers amazing tropical fruit sweetness and just the right balance of oak and spice. Also a wonderful ABV for its age. The tasting revealed, ripe pineapple, honey and toasted coconut.

The first-fill sweet wine finish works in favour of this buxom Blair Athol. Yellow fruits and boiled lolly come with a tempered sweetness and a noticeably spicy overlay before a finish that evokes almond biscotti and apricot syrup. It may be lacking the extra layers that convey complexity, but this is a thick-textured and enjoyable ambassador for a distillery which rarely gets the limelight. 54.5% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered. 278 bottles.

Notes from the bottlers... The distillate is medium bodied, sweet and fruity. Matured in a refill Hogshead for most of its life before it was finished in a 1st fill sauternes wine barrique for honeyed notes and apricot. The tasting revealed, glazed honey, candied red apple and rowies.

Recognised for producing a full bodied spirit with malty and subtly smoky notes, Dailuaine has enough character to match the influence of first-fill PX. In this case the sweet sherry finish has deepened the colour and added aromas and flavours of Dundee cake and toasted vanilla. 265 bottles from single cask #303813. 53.7% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

    ABV: 54.6%

Founded in 1958 overlooking the river Spey, Tormore is another Pernod Ricard distillery that's off most people's radars with few official bottlings, let alone cask strength releases. The aroma here is youthful, sprightly, zesty then fruity: Spiced pears, quince paste and apple cider are complexed by light vanilla and a discreet 'greeness' (white pepper or new oak?) Eminently drinkable uncut, this is creamy and laden with the same notes found on the nose plus a perfect dash of cinnamon and zippy spice. Thankfully, no sweet finishing was applied to obscure the distillery character, just a faultless bourbon cask at play. 54.6% Alc./Vol. 258 bottles from a refill barrel. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the bottlers... Nose: A bright and fresh breakfast style whisky with notes of toasted bread, white peach, vanilla and pink grapefruit. There’s also a slight salt tang suggesting nots of cashew nuts and honeydew melon. Palate: The first taste is quite sweet with vanilla wafers, dried apple skins and white chocolate. This then evolves to spiced orchard fruit and a toasted oak character. There is also a hint of smoke that leads the mind to think of an earthy, woody spice feeling. Finish: Short but very clean and refreshing. Orange barley sugar sweets, dried banana and a desiccated coconut character. The toasted bread note returns but this time spread with lemon curd and orange marmalade.

    Bottle
    $2040.00 Dozen
    ABV: 56.3%

Despite being 'finished' for over two years in an ex-Tawny Port barrique, the port influence isn't profound. The opening sniffs are relatively dry and peppery, with muted vanillan malt and a slightly acidic lift, but expand into deeper, richer notes of chocolate cheese cake and blood orange. More of an attack than the nose suggests and more of a stewed fruit accent as opposed to the fresh orchard fruit character you often associate with this distillate. Spices maintain intensity through the bittersweet finish. Given that Diageo's official release of the same age is selling for well over $500, the price is very reasonable. 56.3% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. 259 bottles

Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Very sweet and nutty on the initial nose with notes of sugared almonds, lemon lozenges and a touch of chocolate orange. Warming spice notes develop with ginger, nutmeg and flaky pastry. Palate: A well-structured entry with the delivery of sweet and spice notes perfectly balanced. A toasted baguette with Nutella spread character moves along to reveal blueberry and blackberry crumble. Finish: A chocolate mint note emerges followed by butter toffee, vanilla and floral honey notes. This sweetness fades leaving a drier herbal character of tobacco, fennel and roasted peanuts.

    Bottle
    $2160.00 Dozen
    ABV: 54.3%

A floral heather-honey note develops with mild waxiness, understated nashi pear and cigar box. Comes together on the palate in a beautifully rounded expression, stylistically, a little less honey-malt richness and slightly more peat. The complex of smokey-fruity-waxy-coastal succulence at the finish is simply mouthwatering. Deft citrus raises the vibrancy. No need to add water as the balance is already flirting with perfection. Orkney at its unadulterated best. 54.3% Alc./Vol. 214 bottles from a bourbon cask.

Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Sweet, vibrant and very fresh on the confectionary style nose. Vanilla, honey and toffee initially from the bourbon cask leaving its mark before a wave of citrus zest and light smoke notes take over. Palate: The sweetness translates to the palate but this time it is more oak and peat laden. Also, now more sophisticated with a honeycomb and chocolate character. late spice notes of cinnamon and allspice tone down the sweetness a little. Finish: Long, with the smoke and peaty notes coming to the fore. A touch buttery and a mocha character remain along notes of oak char, pineapple and honey on toast.

    $1740.00 Dozen
    ABV: 59.2%

A simple refill hogshead showcasing pronounced Islay character: Barbeque and smoked meats feature on the nose alongside white pepper, sea shore, hints of medicine chest and something vaguely tropical. Super creamy and supremely balanced at near 60%; smokey citrus gives way to menthol tobacco, peppercorns, crushed pine buds, sooty peat and late charry oak. Bitter dark chocolate and tobacco through the aftertaste. So seamless it could be Kilchoman (but they don't sell to independents). Whatever it is, the peat is laid on in an impressively heavy-handed fashion. 59.2% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. 331 bottles.

Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Very costal and full of classic maritime character. Notes of sea spray, salted popcorn and peat embers initially before moving to a fruitier citrus style with orange zest, lemon pepper and barbequed lime. Palate: The high ABV really brings the smoke and peat to the fore before massive waves of mixed peel, fruit & nut chocolate and baked apples take over. This is followed by drier style spice and toasted oak character. Finish: Baked pear and roasted nuts before the fruitiness fades to leave behind a slightly drying orange bitters and fragrant wood smoke character.

Twelve months in a Veneta Botti Amarone barrique has bestowed the whisky with a subtle rust-red gold hue. At first pour, aromas of wood shavings mingle with a dry malt character. Several minutes of air contact adds hints of plummy fruitiness and cigar box. For a distillery known for its light, sweet distillate, this is a sizeable dram: Plump, full-bodied, medium sweet though somewhat simplistic, the winey notes become apparent at the last; wisps of cherry-laced chocolate and Turkish delight are accompanied by a flurry of tingling wood spices. 56.6% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Sweet on the initial nose with the finishing cask showing its qualities. Red berry compote, ground ginger and caramel shortbread with a distinct liquorice note coming to the fore in time. Palate: A sweet dry balance is offered in the form of oatcakes and strawberry jam. The second sip reveals more in the way of spice notes with baked pears dusted in cinnamon and a buttery oak character. Finish: Vanilla and a touch of white chocolate before the sweetness fades revealing more oak and even a touch of light smoke. Finally, a baked cinnamon apple pie impression lingers.

Glen Elgin's medium-bodied, floral and fruity distillate can work extremely well with sweet wine finishes. This one's spent time in an ex-Madeira Barrique from J. Dias. Christmas spices and dried fruits feature on the nose and palate with an attractive fresh fruit cake character. Spices gang up, turning the profile momentarily bittersweet, but the juicy dried fruits rally at the finish. Ends brief, slightly astringent and woody. 55.2% Alc.Vol. Non chill filtered. 277 bottles

Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Fairly dry initially with notes of toasted oak, dark chocolate and roasted nuts. However, with time, sweetness emerges in the form of milk chocolate, candied orange peel and waxy honey. Palate: In the mouth there is an explosion of fruity sweetness in the form of baked apples, blackcurrants and juicy raisins & sultanas. Balance is provided in the form of festive spices, cinnamon and a touch of fennel. Finish: The spice and herbal notes dominate here with a blackcurrant lozenge and a hint of dark mint chocolate. The honey notes from before are now like manuka honey on toast.

Something of a rarity given that, to this day, about the only official Glenlossie remains Diageo's Flora & Fauna bottling. Finished in a Ruby Port cask, the nose presents an interesting medley of dried fruits and bitter dark chocolate leading into an expansive, mouthfilling malt with a chocolate box of flavours. Suggestions of choc-orange confectionary, Monte Carlo tea biscuits and hints of rose wax combine with something vaguely herbal at the finish. On the sweeter side, but balancing spices maintain vibrancy. Late port fruitiness. 53.9% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. 301 bottles

Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Very comforting and warming with notes of chocolate raisins, praline and sherry trifle. Fruitiness emerges in the form of juicy oranges, apple turnovers and a touch of chamomile. Palate: Very rounded and the comforting feelings continue in the mouth. Slightly oily texture carrying notes of toffee, caramel and gingersnaps, all held together by a wrapping of spiced mixed peel. Finish: The citrus character returns and evolves to be more floral than before. Notes of vanilla, lychee and orange curd eventually fade to leave a sweet spice and an oak char impression.

Matured for twelve years in a hogshead then finished in a first fill Oloroso Sherry quarter cask. The nose anticipates a thick malt matched by rich oak influence. Oloroso comes through nicely; bitter peel and (almost) a touch of 'Old Fashioned' amid the fruit-cakey notes. Five minutes air contact accents a nutty / malty aspect. Tactile, complex and distinctive with a deliciously rich, malty middle. Digestif biscuits? Fruit'n'tnut chocolate? Perhaps a touch of salinity to the nutty, dark chocolate finish. This one really works. A very satisfying little Dufftowner indeed. 53.1% Alc./Vol. 178 bottles. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the bottlers... Nose: A deep and rich start with sticky malt loaf, Pedro Ximinez sherry and antique furniture. Under the sweetness there’s layers of spice with a focus on Xmas baking and mulled fruit. Palate: A mouthcoating oily texture on the characterful palate carries the weight and the many layers of spice and sweetness. Notes of red apple, black cherry and cough candy make way to a chocolate and mocha character. Finish: Long, complex and dry tannins now lead with notes of black coffee and high-quality dark chocolate. A peppery warmth and oak style linger with a very late hit of vanilla and liquorice.

Once prized by blenders, Cambus was closed in 1993. Perfect gold in colour. The nose is on the drier side. Five minutes in the glass accentuates sweeter notes being lightly peppered with suggestions of sponge cake, fruit pastries, jelly beans, Bounty Bar and dried peach. Brisk, light entry; Somewhat bourbonesque. The mid palate amplifies the texture, becoming almost malty; follows with a rush of desiccated coconut, sponge cake and vanillan oak. Hints of dry curacao and peppermint confectionary revive the finish. If you tend to find grains overly sweet, this one should work in your favour. 296 bottles drawn from a single hogshead. 44.60% Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... Nose: A complex mixture of creamy vanilla, chocolate powder, red fruits and paraffin wax develop to a marmalade on toast and freshly baked pastry character. All of this contained within a fruit orchard. Palate: Smooth and subtle entry with more body and mouthfeel than expected with grain whisky. Juicy raisins and sultanas in vanilla ice cream balanced with notes of honied spice and desiccated coconut. Finish: Fairly short but very moreish and refreshing. Now more spice led with hints of cinnamon & nutmeg dusted custard, dried banana and peppered oatcakes.

All-natural Ardmore must be the most underrated of all the mainland malts. When they hit across a plot of exceptional St Fergus peat - as they seem to have done here - the result could almost be mistaken for a high quality Campbeltowner. Mingling with Ardmore's traditional wood smoke is an unexpected citrus / saline / coastal freshness; phenols further encroach as lanolin and menthol, giving the aroma a medium-peat Bruichladdich feel. The palate follows through in a melting pot of sweet wood smoke and toffee apple-laced barley flavours. Controlled spices add balance and zing. The finish is dry, ashy, minerally, medium long. Cask strength Ardmore is invariably satisfying. This bottling captures that little something extra. 57.6% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. 216 bottles from a refill barrel.

Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Almost coastal with a mineral rich, oak and smoke quality. A touch of orange bitters and fresh ginger give a spicy impression but balanced with sweetness from vanilla and honeycomb. Palate: The costal notes are now more like salted almonds and peanuts with the smoke and peat in the background. This is replaced with vanilla, tropical fruit and peppered spice qualities. Finish: Long and now more citrus led with notes of zesty lemon, dried apricots and orange barley sugar sweets. The smoke is consistently present but fades to leave a barbequed lime quality.

    ABV: 58.1%

Tasting note: Normally matured in Bourbon barrels, Lady of the Glen take single grain whisky in a new direction with a twelve month finishing in oloroso casks. This Port Dundas shows a rummy aspect on the nose, followed by the usual grain vanillas, intensified by dried apricots and fig jam. Soft and sensual on entry with a burst of dried apricots and warming spirit. Sweet grain vies with oloroso at the finish which has a drying influence, almost clashing. Overall, the sherry gives the whisky a slightly 'maltier' feel and it works unexpectedly well - adding substance and interest to what might otherwise have being just another grain. 58.1% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. 603 bottles.

Tasting note: Matured for over two decades in a refill cask, Glen Grant's fruity style gets an extra layer from a finishing in a fresh oloroso hogshead. The result presents a tension between restrained, drier styled aromas like walnut shells, cigar wrappers, rolling tobacco and dark chocolate against light vanilla and the distillate's latent fruitiness. Very much settled into its skin after two decades, the balance and mouthfeel are almost seamless. Flavours of orange spice cake, hints of marzipan and late dried fruits are rounded off with drying cocoa. Be patient, it's a bit of slow burn experience. No doubt the intention is to compliment the distillate's citrussy character. The nose is pretty much text book as far as Caol Ila aromas go: All the usual suspects gang up in an expressive, maritime mix of sweet kipper, dried herbs, tobacco and salt. In the mouth, this feels more heavily peated than usual, and more peppery too. Digestif biscuits and elastoplast... Gives a bit of a tongue lashing, then finishes oily with lanolin, iodine and dark chocolate through the aftertaste. Ever reliable. 58.3% Alc./Vol. 307 bottles. Non chill filtered.

This is the youngest whisky in Lady of the Glen's current outturn, and also the most curious, partly because it's a first. Given the recent boom in both blends and single malts, companies like Pernod Ricard have been challenged to invest in expanding existing capacity or in building new projects, like Dalmunach. Established in 2015 on the site of the now closed 'Imperial Distillery' and named for a nearby pool in the River Spey, Dalmunach is one of the industry's babies but with a nod to the past - several of Imperial’s key design features have been adapted into the design. Pernod is part of Chivas, so no doubt the majority of Dalmunach's output will be making its way into leading blends like Chivas, Ballantine’s and Royal Salute.

Tasting note: Matured in refill American oak then finished for six months in a first fill Oloroso quarter cask. Young but precociously coloured, the initial pass detects intense fruit cake-like aromas, partly obscured by wafts of alcohol before settlling into a sherried theme. This obviously needs more time to integrate, but already boasts plenty of flavour and appeal. It's a dryish malt, with fruit'n'nut dark chocolate and flashes of caramel. The finish is gently prickly, with almonds, cinnamon and bittersweet chocolate, leaving the impression of a distillate captured in mid-development. 157 bottles. 59.6% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the bottlers... Yoghurt, stewed blackcurrants and marzipan.

The palate is thick and intense on entry with a nice lick of oloroso; Bitter citrus peel frames the malt along with suggestions of roasted nuts.
