Glendalough Double Barrel Single Grain Irish Whiskey (700ml)
    IRELAND
    $79. 99
    Bottle
    $959.88 Dozen
    ABV: 42%

Aged in x Bourbon casks followed by a spell in Spanish Oloroso casks, Glendalough's NAS 'Double Barrel' offers clean, bright and fruity aromas reminiscent of vanilla, caramel fudge, dried mango and fresh fruit slice. The palate is fuller and richer than you'd expect (think young Port Dundas) with good body and well-defined grain flavours including vanilla wafer biscuit, caramelised fruits, milk chocolate, cloves and sprinklings of pepper. Priced right for a quality, easy-drinking Irish grain. 42% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews...  The single grain category gains another brother. This was matured in first-fill bourbon barrels, finished in Spanish oloroso sherry wood before being reduced with Wicklow mountain water. The nose oozes caramel, browned apple, grated nutmeg, black peppercorn, toasted coriander, and clove. A flash of mint is overtaken by a swath of caramel, apple, and pear drops orbiting the muscular spice kick of clove, pepper, and ground chili concentrated on the tongue. Kapow! One to pour blind to Talisker lovers. 86 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: Jonny McCormick 2015

...Brilliant light gold color. Lively, attractive, roasted woody aromas of honey roasted nuts, caramel corn, and fig cookie with a silky, crisp, fruity light-to-medium body and a tingling, interesting, medium-length praline, mocha, and banana nut toast finish. A nice nutty Irish whiskey that will be great in creamy cocktails or with desserts.

Egans Vintage Single Grain Irish Whiskey (700ml)
    IRELAND
    $99. 99
    Bottle
    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46%
Tasting note: Matured in American oak casks for a minimum of eight years. Bright gold. Aromas of vanilla wafer, caramel and custard countered by straw / grass. Some balsa wood? Slightly rum-like after air contact. A middleweight, mildly oily grain with a pleasing balance of caramel, vanilla and emerging fruitiness. Glides through the finish which is judiciously spiced, crisp, warming. Good length. 46% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... From vintage 2009, this bourbon cask matured whiskey is around the 8 year mark. Vanilla custard tarts, digestive biscuits, green vegetal notes, and scents of a bakery counter pull you in. Caramel, active spices, soft fruits, peach, apple, pear, pepper, and golden sultana flavors, but as the caramels slide into toffee the grain character becomes more evident into the finish.

Single Grain whiskies are very rare as most grain whiskey finds itself into blends. There are only several such products in the world. Many people, including world renowned whiskey expert Jim Murray, consider Cooley’s grain distillery to be one of the best in the world. Greenore has also been recognised by the International Wine and Spirits Competition where it won a gold medal in 2004 and a Silver and “Best in Category” in 2005.

The whiskey is produced from soft Irish water from the Cooley Mountains and high quality grains. It is then left to mature in bourbon casks where the oak imparts subtle vanilla tones and honeyed sweetness that charactises Greenore. Only 5,000 bottles of this limited edition whiskey have been produced. Smaller quantities of older ages will be made available.

Tasting note: Pale gold colour. Subdued aromas include waxy apple, vanilla and delicate floral / dried grass notes. The palate yields off dry flavours of vanilla, wafer biscuit and almond flan. Exceptionally smooth with a gentle spiciness adding body. Finishes dry with a subtle wafer biscuit, grassy fade. Clean and refreshing - arguably closer to Bourbon in style than traditional Irish Whiskey.

Other reviews... Nose: soft, sweet corn, delicious hints of Bourbon; Taste: rich, soft oils, melt in the mouth grain and just a hint of barley for good measure; Finish: crisps up as the oak returns; Balance: just a lovely grain whiskey from one of the world's finest grain distillers. 89 points.

Triple distilled via a traditional ‘Coffey Still’ from pure corn and barley followed by maturation for over 6 years in first fill, ex-bourbon casks from Kentucky in the USA. The label references the Irish rebellion of 1916.

Tasting note: Amber gold with straw edges. Damar varnish-like opening inhalations blow off to reveal light scents of vanilla wafer biscuit, creme caramel and fresh sawn American oak. Light to medium bodied with a racy entry and a spicy surge of vanilla, clove, pepper and late caramel nib milk chocolate. Finish is mildly tannic, medium long with hints of Bourbon soaked oak, peppery warmth and vanilla lingering. Non chill filtered. 46% Alc./Vol.

An eight year old single grain, matured in a Bourbon cask and bottled non chill filtered and at natural strength for extra punch.

Tasting note: [from a 20ml sample] Bright gold. Wow! A bouquet from out of the blue for a single grain. Semi-ripe honey-dew and pear tart, followed by applemint and grassy freshness. Packed with oily grains in the mouth – at the same time so controlled and beautifully focused; a long thread of vanilla and caramelised orchard fruits with a slow burn of tingling alcohol that evaporates over the tongue. Drying, lipsmacking and moreish through the final stages. Hard to believe it’s 59%. Serious grain that's dangerously drinkable. 59% Alc./Vol. 1000 bottles.
