Canadian Whisky

Famous examples of Canadian Whisky include Crown Royal & Canadian Club, but the North American scene is more exciting than that. Look out for cask strength, single barrel and single malt bottlings too. The new Canadian profile is complex and sometimes surprisingly full bodied, while retaining the key notes of vanilla wafer, caramel, peach, honeyed oak and the silky texture that's traditionally associated with this style.

The Canadian Club brand was first introduced in 1858 by Hiram Walker, a grain merchant turned distiller. Born in New England in 1816, Hiram Walker came west to Michigan in the 1830's to seek his fortune. After a few false starts, he launched a successful grocery business in Detroit and learned how to distil his own cider vinegar instead of selling someone else's for a minuscule profit. Walker then decided to branch into whisky. His first barrels were produced in 1854 and were a great success due to their fine quality and purity. Concerned about Michigan's strong puritanical temperance atmosphere and aware of the good farmland being opened up by the Great Western Railway on the Canadian side of the river, Walker decided it was time to make a move. The distillery he established from next to nothing later grew into 'Walkerville' (Ontario) a town revolving almost entirely around Hiram Walkers many enterprises. The town was later recognised as a model of industrial self-sufficiency.

'From patience comes perfection' - this is the philosophy behind the production of Canadian Club Classic. Unlike any other whisky, being characteristically light, mild and delicate, Canadian Club Classic owes its clean taste and distinctive character to the fact that it is blended before maturation in white American oak barrels for a minimum of twelve years. The blend is founded on a triple distilled base spirit which is then married with two 'flavouring spirits' - one double distilled, the other single distilled.

Tasting note: Deep burnished copper colour. Moderate aromas fall in the dessert spectrum - creme caramel, vanilla slice, plus a touch of cinnamon and clove followed by a silky, creamy delivery with semi-sweet flavours of vanilla, short bread, dilute golden syrup and toffee in the aftertaste. A plush, gently warming Canadian with low key rye. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Pale golden amber color. Sweet, perfumed buttered caramel corn and spice aromas. A supple entry leads to a soft medium-bodied palate with rummy spice, medicinal herbs, and toffee notes. Finishes with a peppery, spicy rye fade. 84 points (Recommended) -  www.tastings.com

Nose: Drier, pruney, slightly medicinal. Palate: Rounded. Tightly interlocked flavours. Finish:Milk chocolate. Sweet. By far the biggest finish in this group of Canadian Clubs. Comment: That medicinal touch gives this whisky an appetising edge. Rating: 77 - tasting note sourced from Michael Jackson, www.whiskymag.com

...The bouquet features deep notes of butterscotch, nougat, almond paste and light vanilla. The palate entry offers succulent flavors of almond paste, candy and oaky vanilla; the midpalate is woody, caramel-like, with hints of dried yellow fruit, white pepper and spice. Finishes balanced, sweet and oaky. 90-95 points -  www.wineenthusiast.com

Australia is the first market to launch Canadian Club 8 Year Old. The reason, says Beam Suntory, is that Australia is "...leading growth in the New Age Whisky category, experiencing year-on-year growth, at more than eight per cent in the last year."

The 8 Year Old is differentiated from other Canadian Club labels in that it has a higher rye and barley content than the Original 1858 and is matured in char-treated American white oak barrels to create a richer, smoother flavour. 40% Alc./Vol.

Fully imported, Canadian Club is a superbly smooth blend that is distinguished by its unique taste. The brand was first introduced in 1858 by Hiram Walker, a grain merchant turned distiller. Born in New England in 1816, Hiram Walker came west to Michigan in the 1830's to seek his fortune. After a few false starts, he launched a successful grocery business in Detroit and learned how to distil his own cider vinegar instead of selling someone else's for a minuscule profit. The town was later recognised as a model of industrial self-sufficiency.

Unlike any other whisky, being characteristically light, mild and delicate, Canadian Club owes its clean taste and distinctive character to the fact that it is blended before maturation in white American oak barrels for a minimum of six years. The blend is founded on a triple distilled base spirit which is then married with two 'flavouring spirits' - one double distilled, the other single distilled.

Tasting Note: Canadian Club makes a refreshing change from the traditional smokiness of its Scottish counterparts. Bright gold colour. Straight forward, sweetish nose of grain and cream. Light, exceptionally smooth palate with flavours of charry oak, grain and caramel. Subtle aftertaste of spice, orange rind and toffee. Goes surprisingly well when mixed with lemonade. 37.5% alc./vol.

Other reviews...Golden color. Buttery oak and caramel aromas. Round and soft entry. Dry light to-medium body with lean oak, taffy, and spice notes. Finishes with a dried fruit and oaky spice fade with a nice touch of heat.

“Mellow elegance. Joni Mitchell.” – David Broom, whiskymag.com.

Crown Royal was originally created to commemorate the Royal visit to Canada by Britains King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in 1939, and has since become the biggest selling Canadian whisky in the United States. The distillery stores an astonishing 1.25 million barrels and incorporates up to 50 different whiskies in its final blend. The pure water of Lake Winnipeg in Gimli, Manitoba is an essential ingredient in the production.

Tasting notes: Bright gold with a gold ochre hue. The nose is a virtual merry go round of spice and fruit with pineapple and banana between flashes of spicy rye, vanilla and creme caramel. Imagine your favourite American Rye, only slimmed down, smooth and ultra sexy. This is seductive stuff from the get go and the palate doesn’t let up. Sweet baked apple and custard like flavours are served up in a gently warming, spicy wrap with impeccable balance. Long, subtle aftertaste of toffee apple, spice and creme caramel,  finally finishing dry with a dusty cocoa fade. It's Canadian whisky as most will never have experienced it. Forget CC and find out what all the fuss is about! 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Nose: Seriously big rye offers a hard and fruity edge to the soft corn and oak. Palate: rock-hard and crisp mouth arrival thanks to the early rye, softens for the corn and then the rye sends some fruity shockwaves around the palate. Finish: bitter and booming, big controlled oak finale on gentle oil. This has definitely changed in the last seven or eight years as all blends must. It has a slightly larger rye dependency than of old but the mouthwatering effect is sublime. An international great. 93 points - Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible 2005

This 100% rye is named after gambler, buffalo hunter, army scout, gunfighter and newspaperman, William “Bat” Masterson.

Tasting note: Brassy amber colour. Subtle peppermint top note over spicy ryvita biscuit; evolves unripe granny smith apple and sweeter spices. Nicely balanced with a fruity / rye combination that's medium dry, firm and rye bread like; more tart apple enters at mid palate. Finish is fresh, mildly tannic with leather and charry oak in the aftertaste. 45% Alc./Vol.

Sortilege is a brand best known for its honey and maple-influenced whisky liqueurs, derived from a recipe developed by Quebec’s first settlers. At the time, the settlers would flavour their eau-de-vie with maple syrup. They soon began using it directly during the distillation process, and thus, maple whisky was born. Sortilege have now branched out into whisky, starting with this judicious blend of 5 and 7-year-old batches. "For any whisky lover on the planet looking for a huge but nearly perfectly balanced experience, then here you go." - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible

Founded in Calgary, Canada in 1946, Beam Suntory-owned Alberta Distillers have been heavily promoting their Alberta Premium brand since 2020. It started with the first release of Alberta Premium Cask strength and continued in 2022, when the brand’s 40% bottling debuted in the United States.

The cask strength expressions are annual releases that vary in ABV from batch to batch. They're also 100% pot distilled, as opposed to the lower proof blend which is created using column and pot stills. Both employ 100% rye grain mash bills. Said George Teichroeb, Alberta Distillers GM, in a press release, “For distillers like myself, cask strength whiskies are where we get to demonstrate our skill and craftsmanship, as the final product is completely unadulterated. This liquid is a product of that craftsmanship and our ongoing commitment to delivering world-class 100 percent rye whisky.” Many rye enthusiasts may find the entry-level offering is fine for cocktails, but the higher proof allows the distinctive rye notes to be fully expressed.

Other reviews... Truly world-class whisky from possibly the world's most underrated distillery. How can something be so immense yet equally delicate? For any whisky lover on the planet looking for a huge but nearly perfectly balanced experience, then here you go. And with rye at its most rampantly beautiful this is something to worship. Later sips show slightly sour orange juice. Finishes with hot spices and vaguely bitter pith. 91 points - whiskyadvocate.com

...I’m not sure how the standard offering Alberta Premium and this bottle are related, but they are. This hits all the notes that were missing in the standard offering. The rye pops, and the high ABV allows you to temper the whisky with a little water. You can really explore this whisky and all it has to offer. I enjoyed how long this lingered on the tongue. You are going to want to be a rye fan, I think, to appreciate what’s happening here. Some people will adore this whisky straight, others will really love opening it up with a drop or two of water, while many others will probably love this in a nice mixed drink. It has the pop you want, the flavors are there, and it’s just excellent. - thewhiskywash.com

Information is scarce on the history and activities of the 'Potter Distilling Company' from which this 11 year old 100% corn whisky originates. It was British Columbia’s only distillery when Ernie Potter founded it in 1958, starting out as a bottler and merchant of liqueurs. The Potter's name is also referenced with the 'Cascadia distillery', although it is not clear when or why that name came to originate. The company diversified when acquired by Australian born Captain Harold John Cameron Terry in 1962, where it sought to produce varying styles of spirit.

As of 2005, the Potter's Distillery was acquired by Highwood Distillers who continue to produce an array of products under various labels - however it would seem that curios like this have been left behind. This highly unusual 100% Corn offering was bottled after 11 years in a Bourbon barrel by Scotland's oldest independent bottler: Cadenhead's.

New Canadian whiskies are a rarity in Australia. This one arrives with an unusual pedigree, succintly explained by Davin de Kergommeaux, a certified Malt Maniac and trained sommelier who has been enthusing about whisky as an independent commentator for more than a dozen years - in particular, Canadian Whisky. Visit his website at http://www.canadianwhisky.org. Here's Davin's introduction...

"Caribou Crossing is the first single-barrel Canadian Whisky produced by a major whisky company since the 19th century. That was the time when people would arrive at Canadian distilleries with jugs to be filled straight from the barrel. The now infamous Bush Pilot’s, from the late 1990s, was also bottled one barrel at a time, a fact that contributed to its legendary status among the whisky cognoscenti. Caribou Crossing Single Barrel, from the Sazerac Company/Buffalo Trace, now advances this concept further, drawing its very best whisky from an inventory of over 200,000 barrels produced for it by several prominent Canadian distilleries.

For Caribou Crossing, Sazerac’s Master Blender Drew Mayville selected the most mature and flavour-rich of these barrels and oversaw the bottling of each individual barrel. Each barrel has its own unique subtleties so identifying each barrel with a number on the package would help whisky lovers find bottles from different barrels and be able to compare them. Since this is single-barrel bottling, there are no laser codes on the bottle to help the more obsessive find different batches.

“Our goal was to put forth the highest-quality whisky available and to give consumers a new way to look at Canadian Whisky,” Mayville said when he introduced Caribou Crossing earlier this year. “We are very proud of the end result and hope these new products will foster a greater appreciation among consumers for what Canadian whisky can be.” If market acceptance is any indication, Mayville seems to have achieved his goal quite nicely. Not only has Caribou Crossing won accolades from prominent whisky writers, it has sold well enough that a second batch was soon required to replenish empty shelves".

And Davin's thoughts on the whisky? In short, "Creamy vanilla, a dusting of rye spices, bursts of citrus and a veritable tsunami of fresh-cut wood. Soft Corn. Very Highly Recommended.5 stars".

Bottled in Kentucky, Caribou Crossing comes beautifully packaged in a 'Rock Hill Farms' style decanter bottle with a Blanton's-type wax sealed stopper.

Tasting note: Burnished copper / brass appearance. Appealing bouquet includes notes of charry oak, toasted marshmallow and vanilla. Time in the glass draws out more cocoa and distinct spicy rye. Entry is silky, leading into a light to medium bodied profile of vanilla, sweet cereals and drying oak. Exceptionally soft. A touch of spice and rye emerges on the finish. Overall quite delicate and definitely drier than most Canadians. Mild aftertaste of toasted marshmellow. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... For those of you who think Canadian whiskies are thin and bland, you might want to give this whisky a try. No, it’s not a new concept in Canadian whisky, like Forty Creek. It’s still very much a “traditional” Canadian whisky. But, when compared to most traditional Canadian whiskies, it richer, creamier, and velvety smooth. The flavors are straightforward—primarily vanilla, with some crème brulee, toasted marshmallow, tangerine, peaches & cream, and gentle rye spice—but they are clean and well-balanced. A delicious, lighter-style whisky just in time for warm weather. Two additional notes: This is single barrel whisky. There’s no way of identifying the cask, as far as I know. I’m hoping that all the barrels taste as good as the one I have, but I just wanted to make you aware of this. Advanced Malt Advocate magazine rating: 93 points. - John Hansell, www.maltadvocate.com

The whisky is designed as a crowd pleaser with "a hint of pepper and vanilla mingling with citrus zest and a twist of cinnamon" - which is as good a way to sum it up as any.

Better late than never...Here it is, your chance to snap up the World's Best Whisky for 2016 in a direct import, 1 litre bargain bottle.

The Gimli Distillery, situated on the shores of Lake Winnipeg in central Canada is one of the world’s most remote distilleries, as well as being home to the Crown Royal brand. Although Canadian whisky is commonly known as rye, this new CR edition is one of only a handful which is actually made from near 100% rye grain. Most others are distilled from corn or wheat with rye and other flavourings added. Jim Murray gave the Northern Harvest Rye a record-qualifying 97.5 out of 100 points in his 2016 Whisky Bible commenting: “Rye, that most eloquent of grains, not just turning up to charm and enthral but to also take us through a routine which reaches new heights of beauty and complexity. To say this is a masterpiece is barely doing it justice.”

While the whisky was never scheduled for release here, we've managed to secure a small quantity in 1 litre format at an exceptional price for Australian whisky lovers. Find out what all the fuss was about before it's too late!

Tasting note: Brilliant amber gold. Fabulous purity with whiffs of apple/peach tart and fresh-picked mint over vanilla wafer biscuit, pencil shavings, hints of gum and green banana. Crisp and spicy in the mouth. The rye is assertive, oily, dense. An almost brittle mouthfeel. Finish offers buttered ryvita biscuit, vanilla custard, cocoa, pepper and sustained mint freshness. Long, concentrated and beautifully harmonised. 45% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... A blend of 95% rye-grain flavoring whisky with a variety of base whiskies. Its big whisky cocktails will tempt mixers into sipping. Very fruity and floral, with prunes, peaches, red apple skins, and bouquets of spring flowers all boosted by vibrant peppery spices on a slightly oaky base. Crown Royal’s signature balsam resin note and hints of vanilla round it out. The long, spicy finish ends with hints of citrus pith. A complex, tightly woven blend. 91 points

"...oaked to within an inch of its life, but Crown has taken it just to the edge — and brought it back again." - drinkhacker.com

Crown Royal Black is a more robust and intensely flavoured take on traditional Canadian whiskies, which often place emphasis on 'mellowness'. This expression is not only extra-oaked, but also bottled at 45% abv, which is unconventional given that high-proof bottlings fell out of common practise in Canada around the 1950s. It pours a deep bright copper / mahogany colour and follows with sweet, heavy scents of dilute maple syrup, vanilla wafer and cocoa. A soft, light entry leads into a semi sweet burst of vanillan oak, light maple syrup and lively spices with a touch of rye kicking in the finish. It's finally medium dry and gently peppery with fresh cut wood emerging late into the aftertaste. All-round a richer offering than your standard CR, and with zipped up spiciness, bourbon drinkers should enjoy this as an alternative, as should lovers of PX matured malts. 45% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Defintely and imprvement from the last time I tasted this, which was something akin to being hit over the head by a branch from a maple tree... Chewier and sweet sugars now seem to enjoy a pleasant toing and froing with the toasty oak and spice. Plenty to grapple with here. 87 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2023

...Not exactly black. (More like russet, but Crown Royal Russet isn't as catchy.) It's nice to see the higher strength, and there's definitely more flavor here than the standard Crown Royal or Crown Royal Reserve. But it's missing the smoothness and elegance I cherish in other Crown Royal whiskies. Notes of molasses and maple syrup, accentuated by burnt fig, hints of pedro ximenez sherry, and raisin. There are suggestions of dark rum and bourbon in here. (Perhaps an alternative to both?) A whisky to drink on the rocks or as a mixer. 78 points - whiskyadvocate.com

Crown Royal Black is, as you may expect, an added-oak version of the venerable Crown Royal Canadian whisky. In this case, “black” is no joke. It may very well be the darkest color whiskey I’ve ever encountered, a deep hazelnut color in the glass. The spirit in a full bottle is nearly opaque. This concerned me. Over-oaking is a serious risk in whiskey, and the worry of a ruined whisky was on the top of my mind. The good news is that Crown Royal Black isn’t too far gone. Yes, it is oaked to within an inch of its life, but Crown has taken it just to the edge — and brought it back again. The body is sweet like standard Crown Royal, but laced with intense oily wood notes, cinnamon, black pepper, and dried figs. Surprisingly mild for 90 proof, that wood character even overpowers the alcohol out of the spirit. Long and smoldering finish, like a campfire turning to ash. That, of course, has good and bad connotations. I expect CR Black may be too much whisky for many. Others will find it’s got a rustic, frontier character that also finds a bit of balance in its own odd way. - drinkhacker.com

Crown Royal XR (Waterloo Distillery) Blended Canadian Whisky (750ml) - First Edition
    Ontario, CANADA
    $350. 00
    Bottle
    $4200.00 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Initially released in 2006, remarkably, we have managed to secure the final stocks of Crown Royal's first edition XR (some 6 years later), which has primarily sold out internationally. This is the last batch of rare whiskies from what was the Seagram's Waterloo distillery in Ontario, much of which was destroyed by fire in 1993 shortly after the distillery had closed in 1992. This is a one-off bottling that will certainly never be repeated and a must have for any lover of whisky - Scotch, Bourbon or otherwise.

Enthusiasts should also note that the XR (Extra Rare) label is a series of exactly that, rare whiskies, both of which have been the last stocks from closed distilleries. The latest edition (not yet available in Australia) is from the LaSalle distillery, located in Montreal. A trend of old Seagram's distilleries it would seem. Amherstburg distillery next perhaps?

Limited stocks available. Comes beautifully packaged.

Tasting note: Bright brassy appearance. Moderate aromatics tease out hints of raisin and prune followed by vanilla wafer and custard, followed by drier suggestions of spicy oak. Ends up reminiscent of some high end Bourbons. Genuine depth here, and like most very old spirits, a nose that rewards some time in the glass. The palate is drier and with more concentration than CR fans will be used to, not hugely complex, but with a mouthfeel that could only be described as bordering on dangerous, combining flavours of dry wood with flashes of toffee apple and a vibrant spiciness. The drying oak returns on the finish delivering a finely tuned, high pitch toffee / vanilla bean finale. Delicate spice, vanillan oak aftertaste. You will need to take your time with this, but retasting in succession assures full view of one gorgeous Canadian. 40% Alc./Vol.

A spectacular 3L Canadian! "Mellow elegance. Joni Mitchell." - Dave Broom

Crown Royal was originally created to commemorate the Royal visit to Canada by Britain's King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in 1939, and has since become the biggest selling Canadian whisky in the United States. The distillery stores an astonishing 1.25 million barrels and incorporates up to 50 different whiskies in its final blend. Crown Royal offer little insight into the provenance of this blend, but according to the Blogoshere, it's a re-badged Crown Royal with new packaging. Drinkhacker.com writes this was "...formerly known as 'Special Reserve', the blend also gets a slightly new, less 'Special' name. The recipe, however, is the same, a selection of less than 1 percent of the stock available to the company, notably including some spicy rye whisky. It's a stunning Canadian release which we had the pleasure of sampling in 2011. Just landed in Australia.

Tasting note: [Tasted in 2011 from a sample generously donated by a local Bourbon enthusiast] Deep brassy gold colour. Initial passings offer plenty of immediate appeal leaving impressions of buttered popcorn, vanilla slice, wafer biscuit and maple syrup; returning to the glass minutes later sees a fruity edge develop - ripe mango, then fennel which adds freshness; yet another layer contributes dark chocolate, sweet cereals, spicy rye... quite stunning aromatic complexity. Entry is soft and silky, leading into a slow-motion explosion of off-dry, spicy rye flavours, cereals and vanillan oak. Exceptional length and concentration. Seamless integration. Finishes super clean, with a refreshing spearmint burst balancing the whole perfectly before a long cereal, toasty oak and vanilla aftertaste. Superlative stuff! One can only imagine how good this might be bottled at a higher ABV? 40% Alc./Vol.

Bruce Jardine was a local businessman not afraid to think outside the box. After envisioning the concept for a whisky distillery in Cape Breton he traveled to Scotland and sourced out the needed equipment. While there, Jardine acquired a pair of copper pot stills that were hammered out by A. Forsyth & Sons of Rothes, a mash tun and 3 wooden washbacks. As water is a key ingredient in the making of whisky, Bruce and his team researched and sourced out a site at the base of Glenora falls but finally opted for a site further down MacLellan’s Brook, set in an apple orchard amongst a natural stand of maple trees.

Shortly after the construction of the distillery, the nine room inn, the original warehouse, and the erection of the distillation equipment, production began in 1990 yielding a miniscule 20 barrels. Three years later, after aging in oak barrels, the spirit could technically be referred to as North America’s first Single Malt Whisky.

Considering single malt whisky typically matures in the warehouse for at least eight years, cash flow can become a burden. As Glenora continued to be financially stressed it again was forced into receivership after three more years. Then, in 1994, Glenora and its maturing whisky was once again saved from financial downfall. The new and present group is led by Lauchie MacLean, another Bedford businessman.

To add to the struggle, the company's Single Malt Whisky, known as 'Glen Breton', has been the focus of a legal dispute with the Scotch Malt Whisky Association over the use of the name "Glen". Not distracted from their main cause, Glenora has pushed on regardless. In the midst of all these adversities, Glen Breton has been named as one of the 50 top spirits worldwide by Wine Enthusiast Magazine and was awarded a Gold Medal at the '2011 International Review of Spirits' held in Chicago.

A very small allocation of the 14 Year Old has just arrived. Highly recommended by Jim Murray.

Other reviews... What is there not to enjoy? Some exceptionally good casks involved here. 92 points

The warehouses at Glenora are not heated, so aging virtually stops in winter. Thus, the whisky doesn’t reach its peak until its mid-teens. By then, it is malty, fresh, crisp, and grassy, with hints of vanilla and delicate, slightly bitter fruits, including apricots and citrus pith. Fragile floral notes join exotic hints of mango and a nuttiness reminiscent of almond skins and sweetened coconut. Air do dheag slàinte, Glenora, as they say in Cape Breton’s Gaelic Highlands. 85 points

"Beautifully complex..." - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible.

Gooderham and Worts was once one of the largest distillers in Canada. The company merged in 1926 with Hiram Walker & Sons Ltd. and is presently owned by Pernod Ricard. Just north of this historic Toronto distillery is a red brick Gothic Revival Anglican Church named "Little Trinity". William Gooderham built the church in 1843 so his staff wouldn’t have to pay 'pew fees' by going elsewhere ('pay to pray' was common at the time). This release is a homage to that Church (and Gooderham's altruism) in a triple blend of corn, rye and wheat whiskies, each employing a variety of distilling methods and maturations, including virgin oak barrels, x-bourbon barrels and a third matured in barrels that had matured other whiskies. 'Little Trinity' was one of four releases making up the 2017 'Northern Borders Rare Collection', with availability reserved for Canada and to a lesser extent, Europe and the USA. Going by the reviews, it's also one of the most exciting Canadian releases in years. A very small quantity has sneaked into Australia and is sure to satisfy North American whisky buffs.

Other reviews... Beautifully complex but will suit those with catholic tastes. 94 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2020

...The standard Gooderham & Worts blends corn, wheat, barley, and rye whiskies. This special edition forgoes the barley but not the flavor. A lovely hard toffee start slides into a wealth of cereal notes: barley sugars, Cream of Wheat, and oatmeal. Lovely soft caramels send a smooth sweetness gliding over the palate. Little Trinity exemplifies luxurious mouthfeel as much as it does breadth of flavor.

A honeyed nuttiness pins down the rye spices through the finish. A very complex blend that doesn’t require a safety net." - 94 points - distiller.com

Selling for a song: One of the all-time benchmarks in age statement Canadian whisky.

Another week, another never to be repeated deal in premium spirits...
Generally considered a high point in its genre, certified Malt Maniac, Davin de Kergommeaux, enthuses about Wiser's 18 in his comprehensive blog www.canadianwhisky.org stating, "The longevity of Wiser's 18 year old is a testament to its spot at the apogee of Canadian whisky."
He adds, "Most people would be surprised to learn that a whisky this richly flavourful contains almost no rye or other flavouring whiskies. No, it is almost entirely corn whisky that has been distilled to high proof (94% + -) then left to mature for eighteen years in well-used ex-bourbon barrels. So, most of those wonderful flavours come from the slow oxidation of the spirit in the barrel and from the even slower chipping away at the wood by the ethanol... Look for pencil shavings, fresh-sawn lumber, sweet barrel notes, hot peppers, typical hard crisp peppery rye (from the wood, not the grain), vanilla, sweet fruits (prunes) and sour fruits (limes, kiwis), dry grass, faint pitchy notes and leathery Ontario tobacco. Very complex, and beautifully balanced with no dominant flavours, but a single well-synthesized whole."

As one of the best selling brands in its home country, it's no surprise this extra aged Wiser's has received wide acclaim including a Double Gold at the 2014 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Once again, an offer unlikely to ever be repeated, so stock up.

Tasting note: Flawless amber gold colour with heavy aromas of caramel, vanilla wafer, creamy soda, coffee confectionary and peach nectar. This is packed with rich vanillas, caramel fudge and candied fruits in a svelte textured, buttery delivery that sees faint rye spice and oak tannin peaking through the finish. Pike Creek is all about creating a rich blend, then finishing it in barrels previously filled with other flavorful spirits. Standard versions feature Port and rum finishes. This 21 year old edition spent nearly 6 months in Speyside malt whisky casks. The fruity Speysider left no smokiness behind, just spices, red fruits, and buttery barley malt. The Small Batch Canadian whiskies continue the trend that began with Jim Beam’s Small Batch Bourbons. The philosophy is to follow traditional production methods in order to create a highly individual range of products each with its own idiosyncrasies. Three new additions to the Canadian Whiskey portfolio have arrived in Australia from the McCormick distilling Company located in historic Weston, Missouri. McCormick’s commenced operation in 1856 when Ben Holladay started making fine whiskey using pure limestone spring water from the local area. Today, McCormick is the oldest continuously operating distillery in the U.S and is listed on the National Register of Historic Sites. Supplying spirits to all 50 states and 37 foreign countries, McCormick is a vast, multi-faceted operation that retains its history while continuing to innovate with award-winning new products. To create the Small Batch Canadian Collection, McCormick’s import Canadian whiskey for final blending, maturation and bottling under their own label. The result remains undeniably Canadian in both quality and style.

Pike Creek Double Barrelled Canadian Whisky is a blend of select oak aged whiskies finished in vintage Port barrels. Traces of port remaining in the pores of the casks serve to further condition and mellow the whisky while imparting a subtle fruitiness and warm toasted notes.

Finish: some spices prosper as the port makes a stand, genuinely fruity at first then becoming a little more bitter as the oak arrives. Balance: much more complexity now than from the first bottlings. A Canadian of genuine style and character. 40% Alc./Vol. 87 points - Jim Murrays Whisky Bible 2006.

In 1869, Thomas H. Handy purchased the Sazerac Coffeehouse and began to acquire and market brands of liquor. Ever since (except for a stint as a delicatessen and grocery vendor during Prohibition), the Sazerac Company has distilled an ever-increasing line of fine spirits. Today, they are still an independent, American family owned company and proud owners of many of America's most venerable distilling companies - Buffalo Trace Distillery, A. Smith Bowman, Glenmore Distillery, Barton, Fleischmann, Medley and Mr. Boston.

The company also owns and produces over a dozen Canadian whisky brands, including this one.
Sazerac Master Blender, Drew Mayville, has amassed a diverse inventory of over 200,000 barrels of Canadian whisky through several acquisitions from leading Canadian distilleries. This gives Mayville a wide range of choices when he selects the barrels for his Royal Canadian Small Batch. “The Single Barrel and the Small Batch are the beginning of a long-term strategy for Sazerac to raise the bar for Canadian Whisky,” says Mayville. Each release of Royal Canadian Small Batch is comprised of Sazerac's best barrels of extended age whiskies, which in turn are hand bottled to allow for the highest quality control possible.

Excellent / Strong Recommendation - Royal Canadian Reserve Small Batch - Ultimate Spirits Challenge.

...The old familiar Royal Canadian blend has a loyal following. In Michigan and the south-eastern states, Sazerac’s ever-popular Royal Canadian blended whisky sells strongly. But now, a new arrival is garnering even more attention, and earning solid sales nation-wide as well. You see, there’s a new Royal Canadian and it’s older, just a little bit smarter, a lot better looking, and about as robust and flavourful as you could want a mixing whisky to be... It drinks like a very sweet fruit smoothie with earthy rye, hints of fresh oak, hot pepper, baking spices, pickle juice, spirit, and refreshing bitter notes. Fruity & Spicy. 3.5 / 5 stars. - www.canadianwhisky.orgsize>

A blend made of Canadian whiskies at least six years old.

Other reviews... A nose like light caramel corn, with a hint of biscuit dryness and a smidgen of cinnamon sugar. Light in the mouth, sweet and a bit spicy, with some cinnamon heat toward the end. There is a bit of a roar right in the middle, where the grainy sweetness catches fire briefly, but mostly this is fairly meek stuff. Made for mixing, no real flaws. 81 points - whiskyadvocate.com (Fall 2012) Reviewed by: Lew Bryson

...Nose: Sweet. Crème caramel, hint of brown sugar. Raisins in a vanilla syrup. A touch of raspberry juice. Touch of resin. Palate: Crisp and dry, bursting into a gingery spiciness. Finish: Spicy and dry, oaky, quite lingering. Comment: A well put together dram with a solid oak frame.

The Seagram Company was a large corporation headquartered in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It began in 1857, when a distillery was founded in Waterloo, Ontario. Joseph E. Seagram became a partner in 1869 and sole owner in 1883. For a time, Seagrams were the largest distiller of alcoholic beverages in the world. The company's assets have since been acquired by other companies, notably The Coca-Cola Company, Diageo, Pernod Ricard, and Vivendi.

The Seagrams name is survived in this Rye heavy whisky from Canada that comes with a reputation for delivering value for money.

Tasting note: Pristine, bright gold colour. Vanilla jumps out with the initial sniff. Further air contact leads to dustings of cocoa and whispers of spice. There's a delicate freshness to the nose but overall it comes over as more barrel than grain so not a distinctively rye aroma by any stretch. Entry is light and gently sweet followed by a relatively hollow mid palate. Finishes with a surge of soft spice, vanilla, and mildly anise-like, fruity cereal flavours. Warm, dry, spicy rye aftertaste. Fades rather quickly but is clean and light. Flawless mixing whisky, though not if you're looking for a rye with character. 40% Alc./Vol.

    CANADA
    $130. 00
    Bottle
    $1560.00 Dozen
    ABV: 46%
Tasting note: Brilliant gold. Reminiscent of a fruity Speysider on the nose; think Linkwood or Glenlossie; Fragrant scents of fruit yoghurt, pastries, light caramel and vanilla. Follows with a full bodied, malt-focused delivery, building with lively spices, vanilla and sweet cream-tea biscuit flavours. The finish is oily, honeyed, pure and delicately fruity, nicely balanced by pepper and drying oak. 46% Alc./Vol.

In 2011 Evans and distiller James Marinus fired up the distillery’s two Forsyths copper pot stills. The resulting single malt is creamy, malty, and slightly minty. Citrus fruits, peach pits, and stimulating white pepper slowly fade into gentle barrel notes.

This takes its name from the farm where the two-row barely was sourced - Montfort District Lot 141. The barley wasn't malted (aka green malt) hence, this is technically a 'single grain', rather than a single malt. Maturation took place in American oak.
Awarded 'Best Canadian Grain' at the World Whisky Awards 2018.

Tasting note: Brilliant gold. Slightly rum-like with creamy and semi-sweet aromas suggesting straw / dried grass, followed by hints of wax and peachy fruit. Likewise on the palate, where the delicate stone fruit notes repeat, finishing vanilla-heavy, oily, medium long with oaky sweetness lingering through the aftertaste. 1400 bottles. Non chill filtered. 46% Alc./Vol.

Canadian Whisky is more than just for mixing.

Canadian whisky has held its ground as sales keep apace with its Kentucky cousins, a fact largely credited to the mixability of many of the larger Canadian brands. However, distillers are moving with the rest of world in diversifying and rethinking the category. Beyond Canadian Club there's a wealth of high end ryes, blends and extended age whiskies now commanding attention. North American whisky took a huge leap forward when in 2017, renowned whisky writer, Jim Murray awarded a 90% Canadian Rye "World's Best Whisky".

The North American whisky style.

A little rye goes a long way in a mash bill, and while most Canadian distillers also use corn, wheat, and other grains, Canadians refer to their whisky as "Rye". There are no Canadian government requirements when it comes to the percentages of grains used in the mash bill. Most of the mass marketed Canadian Whisky brands are a mix of corn, wheat, and barley, with only a modest proportion of rye. The result is a flavoursome but lighter-bodied, easy-drinking spirit.
