In 1950, Chivas Brothers began the search for a secure supply of exceptional malt whisky. Strathisla Distillery in Keith, the oldest and most beautiful distillery in the Highlands, was the obvious choice. From that day to this, the world-famous Strathisla Single Malt Scotch whisky became the foundation of the Chivas blend. The international reputation of Chivas Regal has been built upon this distillery and the skill of successive generations of Master Blenders. Legally, a blended Scotch whisky must contain both single malt Scotch whiskies and single grain Scotch whiskies. Chivas Regal 12 and 18 year old whiskies are blended using a special process called triple blending. First of all, the selected single malts are blended together. The second stage sees the selected single grains blended together, and then thirdly, the vatted malts and the vatted grains are brought together. These spirits are each married in selected oak casks for an extended period of maturation in order to produce an exceptionally smooth, rich whisky.

'The smooth taste of Chivas Regal 18 Year Old reflects the traditional style of blended Scotch whiskies with a powerful array of rich, fruity aromas, and a defined smokiness that develops into a long and memorable finish.' So says Colin Scott, Master Blender of Chivas. Colin hand-picks each whisky designated for Chivas Regal 18 Year Old from the distilleries most precious stock - including certain whiskies that are now exceedingly rare.

Winner of three major awards, each bottle of Chivas Regal 18 Year Old bears its own unique serial number, sourcing it back to the one particular triple blending. And because only selected casks are matured to such a great age, the quantity of Chivas 18 Year Old produced every year is always strictly limited.

Tasting notes: Brassy gold appearance. Bubblegum / marshmallow opening is a little bourbonesque. Second pass reveals vanilla and biscuity malt with a judicious slather of peat. The palate combines a silky mouthfeel with solid concentration - nothing like the comparatively beige 12 Year Old - delicate spices, biscuity, honeyed grains with hints of dried fruits. The finish is crisp with a lingering confectionary note. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Nose: A little closed without water; hints of grass, crystallised fruits and butter toffee. Water brings a note of dry cracker which mellows into juicier aromas. Palate: Solid rich stuff that stays in the mouth, all polished wood, soft leather, chocolate, black fruits, pipe smoke and balancing crunchiness. Finish: Lush and fruity slowly crisping up. Comment: Like a gentleman's club: all leather chairs, cigar smoke and murmured conversations. A beauty. Rating: 90 -  David Broom, www.whiskymag.com

Brilliant rich amber color. Caraway and nut fudge aromas. A very soft entry leads to an oily medium-to full-bodied palate with elegant balanced melon and dried fruit, brown spice, and heathery malt flavors. Finishes with a nice long fade of toffee and spice. A complex and elegant blended Scotch for sipping.  International Review of Spirits Award: Gold Medal

The name 'Schivas' is derived from the old Gaelic 'seimh as', meaning 'the narrow place.' It perfectly describes the spot where a medieval castle once stood, at a narrow stretch of the River Ythan, in Aberdeenshire in the North East of Scotland. In 1950, Chivas Brothers began the search for a secure supply of fine malt whisky. Strathisla Distillery in Keith, the oldest and most beautiful distillery in the Highlands, was the obvious choice. The distillery was purchased and now the highly praised Strathisla Single Malt Scotch Whisky lies at the heart of the Chivas Regal blend. Aged for a minimum of 12 years, Chivas is distinguished by its light, lingering aroma, full, smooth, balanced palate with a hint of smoke - very subtle and complex. 'A good whisky blender knows intimately the character of all the whiskies he uses,' says Chivas's Master Blender Colin Scott. 'They are as unique as people. Some are subtle, some are bolder. My job is to produce a distinctive blend of whisky of the highest possible quality which is consistent in flavor and bouquet from year to year. I would describe Chivas Regal as smooth, with a honeyed richness, round and full-bodied, slightly smoky with a long, lingering finish. The classic, premium Scotch whisky.'

Other reviews... Nose: Distinct marshmallow. Peach blossom. Faint cocoa. Palate: Light hazelnuts. Cream. Buttercups. Violets. Lavender. Herbal. Finish: A little snappy and aggressive. Comment: The flavours tail off, as though the whisky is going to sleep. Smooth and easy, but lacks livliness. Springtime never quite blossoms into summer..  Rating: 75 -  Michael Jackson, www.whiskymag.com

Brilliant golden amber color. A somewhat closed nose of light caramel, toast, and vapor. A soft, buoyant entry leads to a off-dry, somewhat thin light-to medium-bodied palate with sweet toasty malt, peppery spice, and a brush of grain alcohol. Finishes dryly with a quick, hot fade. 40% Alc./Vol.

Scotch Blended Whisky of the Year (over 12 years)' -
    95 points Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2010.

After a 98 year absence, Chivas Regal 25 returned in 2007, paying homage to the first ever Chivas Regal blend. First released in 1909, the Inclusion of single malt whisky from the Strathisla ditillery, Speyside is said to give Chivas its defining sweetness.

Tasting notes: Deep brassy gold colour. Rich and heady bouquet offers a sublime medley of fruits and nuts, dark chocolate, nougat and vanilla. An exceptionally pure, soft and svelte textured delivery possesses remarkable vibrancy for a whisky of its ilk. Stewed fruits combine with lively spices, cocoa and vanilla wafer biscuit. Outstanding length and balance. Concludes long and fresh, almost peppermint like, with hints of spice and cocoa persisting. A brilliant example that showcases what extra aged Scotch Whisky is all about. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews...Nose: Exotic fruit of the first order: some pretty serious age here, seemingly older than the 25 years (23.5) Taste: Mesmerisingly two-toned, with a beautiful delivery of velvety grains contrasting stunningly with the much firmer, cleaner malts. Softly chewable, with a gentle spice fizz as the vannilla begins to mount; unbelieveably juicy and mouth-watering despite its advanced age. (23.5) Finish: Long, wonderfully texturedand deft; some cocoa underlines the oak involvement, but there is not once a single hint of over-ageing. (24) Balance: unadulterated class where the grain-malt balance is exemplary and the deft intertwining of well-mannered oak and elegant barley leaves you demanding another glass. Brilliant! (24.5) 95 points -Jim Murray's Whisky Bible

A polished nose of red apple, cinnamon, caramels, and salted almonds makes for an enticing prospect on this showpiece dram. The taste exemplifies smoothness. The indulgent palate comprises dark cooked fruits, coffee, malty cocoa, sticky toffee pudding, fudge, and a fine line of orange. Roll it around the mouth: the integrated aged grains enable these select malts to achieve their full flavor potential. An exceptionally long finish has remnants of that toffee pudding and a well-sucked aniseed ball. Treat yourself.

Dewar’s, for one reason or another has become extremely popular amongst American whisky imbibers. Perhaps it is their preference for lighter tasting beers that extends into their tastes for Scotch? This new 18 Year Old release from the makers of one of the best-selling scotch in the world adds to Dewar’s already impressive portfolio of blended whiskies. Key malts include Aberfeldy, Macduff, Royal Brackla, Craigellachie and Aultmore. Note that this is a 750ml bottle as opposed to the 700ml format commonly found in Australia, usually selling for around the $140 mark. Whether you know one or are one, every Old Parr deserves a blend as good as this! In Jim Murray's words, "blending Parr excellence!"

Usually available at Duty Free stores only, Old Parr is named after Tom Parr (pictured on the label), once reputed to be the oldest man in England. Launched in 1909, the brand later found success in export markets such as Japan, Mexico and South America where it was easily identified in its distinctive dimpled and rounded square bottle. The basis of the blend today is Cragganmore, however Glendullan has also been a major component since World War II.

Tasting note: Deep gold / bright copper penny colour. An attractive mix of cocoa, vanilla and breakfast fruit toast with exposure drawing out a fruit'n'nut chocolate aspect. Concentrated for the genre, with a spicy backbone that includes muesli, dried grass and light stewed fruit flavours, ending honeyed yet fresh, grainy, peppery and with excellent length. Quite richly styled. Gets better each time you taste it. 40% Alc./Vol.

    Kilmarnock, SCOTLAND
    $59. 99
    Bottle
    $719.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Black Label was first introduced in 1910 although its origins go back as far as 1820 when Walker blended his original 'Kilmarnock Whisky' and began selling it from his grocery shop. The location of the shop had a great deal to do with Black Labels success. Situated on a main trading route near an old poll gate, the shop attracted passing merchants and locals. It was through these travellers that the whiskys fame quickly spread.

This aged version of the classic Red Label enjoys a similar cult following. Its unique complexity is achieved by expertly blending an extremely diverse, but complementary range of malt whiskies, each of which has been matured for a minimum of 12 years and some for much longer. In total, up to 40 malts and grain whiskies make up the Johnnie Walker Black Label blend. Island and Islay malts deliver spice, richness and lingering peat. Speyside malts make an important contribution to the depth of taste, bringing smoky malt, fruitiness, apple freshness and a rich sherry character to the blend. At the heart of Black Label lies 12 year old Cardhu, an outstanding malt from Speyside, which imparts silkiness, a characteristic which has made it famous as a single malt.

To date, Black Label has won more international awards for excellence than any other deluxe whisky. In the 1880s, Old Highland won medals in Sydney and Paris. Over 100 years later, in 1994, Black Label picked up gold medals at the 1994 Monde Selection Awards and the International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC), where it also won a trophy for Best Blended Whisky. In 1996, it won gold again at IWSC for the best deluxe Scotch Whisky.

Black Label has many admirers, but perhaps none so famous or devoted as Sir Winston Churchill, whose still life painting 'Bottlescape' (1932) proudly captures the familiar contours of his whisky of choice. Indeed, the company's old timers recall the Herculean efforts required to keep the British PM supplied with his favourite tipple during wartime rationing!

Other reviews… Nose: Rich. Maple syrup, spices and mustard. Can a whisky have a hint of acidity on the nose? Yes, but rahter the acidity of a Lenny Bruce rather than of vinegar. Palate: Marijuana. Big interplay of smoky dryness, spicy heat and sweetly malty, creamy vanilla. Finish: Rounded with raisiny sherry. At length, mellow. Comment: Is Black Label a great whisky? Was Dizzy Gillespie a great musician? Rating: 90 -Michael Jackson, www.whiskymag.com

'...God, I love this stuff... this is exactly how a vatted malt should be and one of the best samples I've come across since its launch.' - 95 points, Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2017.

Johnnie Walker Green Label is the only whisky in the Walker range to carry the 'Blended Malt Scotch Whisky' certification. It replaces the older term 'Vatted Malt' and indicates that the whisky has been blended exclusively from single malts, and not blended with inexpensive grain whisky. The Walker family began buying some of Scotland's finest distilleries over 100 years ago. Now, with over 27 malt whisky producers in ownership, the company doesn't have to look too far for the very best material. They can choose from the cream of the crop, and have also acquired over a century of distilling experience in the process, guaranteeing the quality of their whisky well into the future.

Undisputed as one of the all-time classics in its genre, Green label is instantly recognisable as a Walker blend, with a profile of fresh and slightly fruity aromas with hints of mango and toffee followed by the trademark whiff of peat & sea air that distinguishes most of the JW stable.

Tasting note: Brassy gold / impeccable clarity. A sophisticated, expressive nose offers an assemblage of soft, sweet peat, oatmeal biscuit, dried mango / fig, white pepper with good freshness - sustained even after several minutes in the glass. Full and well rounded in the mouth with nipping spices carrying the malty attack, along with flavours of salted crackers, restrained peat and an oily-yet-crisp finish with strong staying power. The vivacious and intensely flavoured character of this vatting will keep you coming back time and again. Forget Blue Label: Green and Gold remain the stars in the JW line up. 43% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Just as complex as Johnnie Walker Gold, but fuller and more richly textured. (Not surprising, given that there are no grain whiskies in Johnnie Walker Green.) This is one of the finer vatted malts on the market. Its flavors are well-integrated. You’ll find creamy toffee and nougat at its core, which is then layered with notes of vanilla, mint, fresh brine, and even a hint of mustard seed. Excitingly fresh and vibrant on the finish. A whisky for both the blend and single malt drinker. And at the price, it is also fairly valued for an all-malt whisky.

A new addition to the Johnnie Walker family. The whisky was created taking Black Label as a blueprint and adding heavily-peated malts, some aged in deeply charred oak casks. Memories of our last tasting of the original Johnnie Walker Black about one year ago (the blend varies) recollect an all round richer, sweeter, oilier whisky whereas rather than doubling the experience, this seems to have halved it. For those who enjoy lighter Islays this is akin to a young Caol Ila. It would make a pleasant food whisky.

Tasting note: Deep gold colour. Moderate aromas of sweet cereals, fruit cake and clove are interwoven with peat that has a salty, kippery edge. Entry is light and silky to the point of being water like. Mid palate is light to medium bodied, with soft spices adding depth. Mild flavours of toffee apple and fruit cake seamlessly combine with sweet grains and delicate peat followed by a subtle, drying aftertaste of fruit cake and peat. This is exceptionally smooth - if that’s what’s most important to you - but the overall delivery is a little thin, especially with regard to the finish and aftertaste. 40% Alc./Vol.

Matthew Gloag bought malt whiskies from distilleries around Scotland and built up a reputation for his cellars. Today that tradition continues with the release of three new super-premium blended Malt whiskies from Gloags. It is a credit to master distiller John Ramsay and his team that a brand selling more than 30 million bottles of whisky in some 100 countries can conjure up  and win acclaim for a 30 year old luxury product such as this. The 30 Year Old Famous Grouse Malt Scotch Whisky is created from the finest single malt whiskies including the world renowned 'Macallan' and 'Highland Park.' These whiskies are left undisturbed to mature for a minimum period of thirty years, though many rest for considerably longer. Each cask is then individually selected to create a blended malt whisky of exceptional character.

George Ballantine, the founder of Ballantine's came from a farming family in the Scottish borders. He established a grocers shop in Cowgate, Edinburgh in 1827, eventually extending his business into wines and spirits. His son, also named George, set up in Argyll Street, Glasgow, in 1872 as a whisky, wine and cigar merchant, with many export interests, especially the promotion of the Old Glenlivet and Talisker Fine Malt brands. In 1903 the family business was granted a Royal Warrant and was recorded as "transacting an immense trade in supplying wines and spirits to families of distinction all over Scotland and in many parts of England and Ireland." The company was subsequently sold, however the new owners had similar success, establishing solid markets in the United States and elsewhere. The rest is history...

Today Ballantine’s is one of the largest spirits brand in the world. The flavour profile of all the Ballantine’s bottlings is largely dependent on fingerprint malts from Miltonduff and Glenburgie. The "Limited" expression is a small production release aimed at the super premium blend market. Beautifully packaged in a cobalt blue bottle.

Speaking at the publication of Jim Murray’s 2011 edition of the Whisky Bible, the man of the hour commented, “Blends are seen by many as the poor relations to single malts. Ballantine’s 17 proves, quite spectacularly, what many of us have known for a great many years: it isn’t. A blender has the chance to create something unique and quite beautiful by putting together many whisky styles. With Ballantine’s 17, the blender has done his job in glorious, quite majestic fashion.”

Note: we have the 40% ABV bottling. Jim Murray's review refers to the 43% bottling, however we would expect the whiskies to be very similar.

Tasting note: Impressive, bright deep, gold colour. The nose offers powerful sweet grainy scents, beautifully integrated with cocoa, charry vanillan oak and a very soft, gentlly wafting sweet peat adding depth. There’s a subtle grapiness too. Concentrated and mouth filling by blended standards and quite spicy, the palate is pristinely clean offering rich sweet malt, followed by cocoa and some smokey, honeyed, biscuit flavours. Outstanding length. Remains spicy, becoming dry - the aftertaste is a remarkable quality of this whisky - pulsing for a good 10-20 seconds and beyond. A first-rate blend with loads of character. 43 % Alc. Vol.

Other reviews: (97.5 points)(n24.5) deft grain and honey plus teasing salty peat; ultra high quality with bourbon and pear drops offering the thrust; a near unbelievable integration with gooseberry juice offering a touch of sharpness muted by watered golden syrup; (t24) immediately mouthwatering with maltier tones clambering over the graceful cocoa-enriched grain; the degrees of sweetness are varied but near perfection; just hints of smoke here and there; (f24) lashings of vanilla and cocoa on the fade; drier with a faint spicey, vaguely smoky buzz; has become longer with more recent bottlings with the most subtle oiliness imaginable; (b25) now only slightly less weighty than of old. After a change of style direction it has comfortably reverted back to its sophisticated, mildly erotic old self. One of the most beautiful, complex and stunningly structured whiskies ever created. Truly the epitome of great Scotch. To the extent that for the last year, I have simply been unable to find a better whisky anywhere in the world. 43% - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2013

Today Ballantine’s is one of the largest spirits brands in the world. The flavour profile of all the Ballantine’s bottlings is largely dependent on fingerprint malts from Miltonduff and Glenburgie.

Today Ballantine’s is currently the 10th largest spirit brand in the world - refined and elegant, regarded as the taste to satisfy a modern style and an excellent, medium weight all-rounder. The Malt and Grain whiskies used to produce Ballantine’s Finest are all aged for more than three years. The original flavour, complexity and refinement comes from more than 50 single malt flavours. The unmistakable Ballantine's flavour is dependent on these 50 single malts, 4 single grains and in particular the fingerprint malts from Miltonduff and Glenburgie. It is balanced because no one single component dominates.
Ballantine’s 12 Years Old , first introduced in the 1950’s includes a blend of over 40 specially selected single malt and grain whiskies.

Other reviews... Bright golden amber color. Vanilla nut fudge aromas. A round entry leads to a dryish medium-boded palate with roasted nuts, caramel and sharp, white pepper. ...The nose unravels with milk chocolate, thick hazelnut spread, and a slender twist of orange peel, though that delectable goodness is evenly balanced with peppermint patties and detectable light, floral top notes. This has a lush softness, with a perceptibly slow crescendo of flavors incorporating caramel toffee, popcorn, and chocolate praline. It’s beautifully integrated with a smooth, dense texture, and releases its grip reluctantly with just a whisper of a peppermint reprise. 43% Alc./Vol. 89 points - www.maltadvocate.com, reviewed by: Jonny McCormick (Summer 2016)

....Colour: full gold. Nose: this is different and, most amazingly, much closer to the old one, with these whiffs of old books, old herbs liqueurs and metal polish, then moss and mushrooms. There’s also more oak, obviously, vanilla custard, cinnamon… And then mead, old roses and Turkish delights (very vivid). Rather beautiful! Mouth: bigger, richer, sweeter and fruitier than the 17. Starts with tinned pineapples and apricots and goes on with pomegranates and cinnamon from the oak. There’s also a little honey, aniseed and touches of rancio (and sherry), then more oak. Just like the 17, it becomes a little dry after a while, a little light… but it remains pretty excellent. Finish: medium long, a notch smokier. Bitter oranges in the aftertaste. Comments: again, it’s no big whisky but it’s complex and beautifully balanced. 85 points

Black Bull 12 Year Old Blended Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Huntly, SCOTLAND
    $79. 99
    Bottle
    $959.88 Dozen
    ABV: 50%
A 50/50 grain / malt blend at high ABV
    that breaks all the rules.

The Black Bull blend was originally trademarked in1933 by George Willshire & Co Ltd, and celebrates the historic Highland Cattle that Scotland is famous for. The name subsequently was assigned to Duncan Taylor & Co Ltd after its takeover of the company in 2001. The present day range includes Black Bull 12, 30 and 40 yr old whiskies.

The 12 year old contains 50% malt whisky and 50% grain whisky and is bottled without chill-filtration at an unusual ABV of 50%. Earlier this year, Black Bull 12 Year Old was awarded ‘Best Blended Scotch Whisky – 12 Years and Under’ at the World Whiskies Awards.

Tasting note: Pale gold colour. This whisky is a little sleepy when poured from a fresh bottle, so if at first you're underwhelmed, just give it some time. A few minutes brings out aromas of dried grass seamlessly melded with sweet, fresh grains, cocoa and a faint suggestion of peat. Hints of fruit begin to emerge. Entry is soft and belies a concentrated palate profile that is an expression of controlled force. Dried grass is followed by dark chocolate and spices, delivered with terrific length and vibrancy, while the balance and mouth feel at high ABV is unexpected. Gentle spices persist into the finish and through to the aftertaste. Concludes delicate, though a little short, with suggestions of dark chocolate and soft smoke at the farewell. A stand out blend. 50% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Nuts sinking into molten toffee wrapped in pure, sensuous smoke on a foundation of cedarwood, dried fruits, and seasoned oak: as exotic as the box’s interior artwork. Sandy Hyslop’s multi-phasic blend draws on closed distillery Imperial’s trademark fruitiness and peated Caperdonich, while maintaining a steady hand on the balance. The ultimate Chivas Brothers Whisky has landed – The Royal Salute 62 Gun Salute. The Royal Salute brand was launched in 1953 in tribute to Queen Elizabeth II. The 62 Gun Salute takes its name from the annual firing of cannon at the Tower of London to mark the anniversary of Her coronation.

Painstaking selection has seen the rarest of Chivas Brother’s whiskies blended to produce a new benchmark in luxury. With the youngest material being 40 years of age Colin Scott has, in the 62 Gun Salute, realised the work of four generations of master distillers.

This luxurious malt is wrapped in a hand crafted Darrington Crystal decanter. The Royal Salute crest has been hand painted in 24-carat liquid gold, with a 24 carat gold plated collar and cut crystal stopper inlaid with a 24-carat gold plated crown. Nest this in a polished wood, leather bound case and you have an expression of the distiller’s art fit for royalty.

Other reviews... Named after the gun rounds fired on Royal anniversaries at the Tower of London. Heightened sherry tones with dark Madagascar chocolate, Brazil nut, fondant cream, and faint espresso indulge the nose. One heavenly sip reveals a velvety smooth whisky, thick and sticky, all revolving around the chocolate and nut, with a little support from dark fruits. You can chew over this for hours as the finish soft-pedals the main themes. A work of genius.

Though not confirmed, this edition of Royal Salute is believed to be discontinued. It was first on the market circa 2012. We have one only from a private collection.

The ceremonial firing of guns in salute is a legendary custom which can be traced back to early seafaring days. Friendly ships passing each other rendered this salute as a gesture of good will. Later it became customary to extend a 21 gun salute to a reigning sovereign upon their arrival. Today this salute marks the welcome of a foreign Head of State to a friendly host nation. The inspiration for Royal Salute, like the ceremony commemorates, seeks to reflect tradition. Aged and bottled in Scotland by Chivas Brothers for 21 years, Royal Salute is unmatched by any other blend for its sheer mellowness. A highly exclusive spirit created for the connoisseur. mBottled in porcelain flagons, produced by Wade porcelain, the design incorporates the image of Robert the Bruce, also bearing a Gaelic motto which translates as ‘fidelity, stability since 1801’. These sought after flagons are available in three colours, inspired by the jewels in the Coronation crown: Sapphire, Ruby and Emerald.

Other reviews: Nose: 23 - Has persisted with the gentle, exotic fruit but less lush here with much more punch and poke; it even seems that the smoke which had been missing in recent years has returned, but in a shadowy form only; Taste: 23.5 - yep! Definately more bite these days with the grains having a much greater input, for all the juiciness, and the vanilla striking home earlier. Makes for a decent sweet/dry middle, the sweetness supplied by boiled sweet candy. Flavour: 23 - plenty of cocoa and the very lightest dab of something smoky; Balance: 23.5 - if you are looking for the velvety character of yore forget it. This one comes with some real character and is much the better for it. The grain, in particular, excels. 92.5 points - Jim Murray Whisky Bible 2010

This is number three in a series forming Chivas Regal's 'Ultimate Cask Collection'. Apart from the one litre bottle and unusual finishing, there's a lot to like about this Travel Retail exclusive: A serious ABV of 48%, excellent reviews and presentation that works, marrying contemporary design with traditional Japanese elements. It's also non chill filtered.

Japanese oak casks are a rarity even in Japanese whisky maturation. The barrels are made using local Mizunara oak sourced from trees that are up to 200 years old. The oak is sought after for imparting exotic wood notes to whisky, such as cedar and sandalwood. Very limited stocks.

Other reviews... A blast of exotic spices, followed by sweet oak, juicy tangerines, bosc pear, sandalwood, petitgrain oil, and vanilla seeds; it’s that junction of oak and spices where the mizunara has worked its magic. The palate is medium in weight with caramel, hazelnut, and a collision of orange and active spices, with the mizunara continuing to influence the flavor of the finish. The cooperage may be arduous but it’s worth it.

Notes from Chivas... Nose: A sweet opening with honey, pears, ripe apples. Following on are exotic spices of sandalwood, vanilla and a hint of cloves, balanced by citrus orange and lemon rinds. Impressive maturity develops around ripe banana, and a subtle nuttiness.Taste: Sweet clementine, orange, nutmeg, almonds, vanilla and homemade raspberry jam appear in a complex arrival, flowing into stewed apples, honey and a tantalising aromatic oak character.Finish: Spices and a sensation of incense perfectly balanced with delicate fruitiness. An appetizing dryness provides complexity into the long finish.

Launched in 2013 as a Japanese exclusive, master blender Colin Scott got the idea for a "culture-specific whisky" after visiting Japan. For this edition, he selected the component grain and malt whiskies – all over 12 years old – then finished part of the blend in Mizunara casks, i.e. Japanese oak. While Suntory’s Yamazaki employs the same, by all reports, this is the first time a Scotch Whisky has been aged in Japanese wood.

Suntory began to experiment with the indigenous oak after the Second World War when supplies of foreign oak were difficult to source. It made a far from ideal vessel, Mizunara's loose grains tended to cause leakage, and also created challenges in terms of timber selection and cooperage. Blenders at the time had few kind words to say about the wood. Decades later, the tree is better understood, and the hints of sandlewood and aloeswood it imparts to whisky are prized.

For those interested in numbers and proportions, the Artist's Blend is composed on the following criteria: Lowland Grain Whisky (fruity/perfumed) 46%, Northern Highland Single Malt (malty/fruity) 28%, Northern Highland Single Malt (grassy/perfumed) 17%, Speyside Single Malt (meaty) 9%. Maturation took place in: First Fill American Oak Barrel (vanilla) 66%, New French Oak Finish {New-Headed Barrel} 26% (Grilled Marshmallow, toastiness, roasted coffee) and a First Fill Sherry Butt (wine, dried fruits) 8%.

Other reviews... After a series of esoteric and expensive releases, Compass Box has decided to bring it all back to the people with a blend and how! The journey sets out as we might expect; all sweet vanilla ice cream, stewed pear tart, and peach melba, but then a wave of spice and white pepper provides an unexpected but delightful twist. In the day and age of rising prices and disappearing age statements, it is refreshing to see an 18yo whisky sell for under $100.

Dewar’s, for one reason or another has become extremely popular amongst American whisky imbibers. Perhaps it is their preference for lighter tasting beers that extends into their tastes for Scotch? This 18 year old release from the makers of one of the best-selling scotch in the world adds to Dewar’s already impressive portfolio of blends. Key malts include Aberfeldy, Macduff, Royal Brackla, Craigellachie and Aultmore. Note that this is a 750ml bottle as opposed to the 700ml format commonly found in Australia, usually selling for around the $150 mark. Comes in special gift tin presentation.

Other reviews... Here is a classic case of where great blends are not all about the malt. ...Vanilla laced with spice, fondant icing, grapefruit peel, and lime zest leave the vanilla and floral notes lower down the pecking order. This is the oldest and rarest Whisky within Dewar's permanent range, matured for a minimum of 25 years, then double aged or 'finished' in casks that previously held Royal Brackla single malt whisky. Unanimous praise from all quarters combined with a significant age statement, slick presentation and a remarkable direct import price add up to an unmissable buying opportunity.

This distinguished, deluxe Scotch is a subtle blend of 15 year old whiskies considered as special as the uniquely designed 'pinched' bottle that holds it. The container was actually the world's second trademark bottle design, officially registered in 1919 - Coca Cola's was the first. The wire netting around the bottle, now merely decorative, was originally used to keep the cork from expanding out in extremes of temperature.

A new value buy in the one litre blended whisky category. Of Grand Macnish, Jim Murray wrote that it’s "For those who prefer their whisky with character, eccentricity and attitude rather than water." There are several variations in the brand's line up, however the Six Cask Edition is arguably of most interest, having been made with malt whiskies from each of the six different regions of Scotland - Highlands, Lowlands, the Islands, Speyside, Islay and Campbeltown. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Sun-dried peats greet the nose with aromas of stewed apples, flaky pastries, apricot conserve, vanilla, and cinnamon. Creamy vanilla and coconut flavors develop, with a slow-burn spiciness crackling in the center of the tongue. Seville orange and caramel cookie flavors escort a long finish of dry, tingling spices, though it could use a little more heft in the mouthfeel. 83 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: Jonny McCormick 2015

Grand Old Parr 18 Year Old Blended Scotch Whisky (750ml)
    SCOTLAND
    $125. 00

    $1500.00 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Usually available at Duty Free stores only, Old Parr is named after Tom Parr (pictured on the label), once reputed to be the oldest man in England. Launched in 1909, the brand later found success in export markets such as Japan, Mexico and South America where it was easily identified in its distinctive dimpled and rounded square bottle. The basis of the blend today is Cragganmore, however Glendullan has also been a major component since World War II.

Here we have the 'deluxe' expression, although there's also a 15-year-old, the NAS Old Parr Tribute and the very rare, beautifully presented Old Parr Elizabethan (none of these are available in Australia at the time of writing). The house style is big, bold and complex by blended whisky standards.

Other reviews... Old Parr is popular in Japan and South America. Oh, and amongst whisky lovers, especially the older bottles, maybe because Mr. Parr lived for 152 years and married for the second time at the age of 122. Colour: full gold. Nose: very different from the Buchanan, sweeter, fruitier, less 'tertiary', with a lot of orange liqueur and then some brine, game, peat, a little ginger ale, touches of molasses, hay, a little chalk, cut grass… It's very complex but I liked the Buchanan's focus (even) better. Mouth: high peat content, high quality. It's a big blend, really punchy, slightly rough (in the sense that it's not as polished as most blends), that develops mostly on bitter oranges, cloves, juniper berries, pepper and then green tea. Very powerful. Finish: long, gingery and peppery. Certainly not what you'd expect from some blended Scotch, but we won't complain! Comments: probably one of the biggest blends out there. I liked the Buchanan a little better because I thought it was more complex and a little silkier. 87 points - whiskyfun.com

Highland Queen "Grand 15" 15 Year Old Blended Scotch Whisky - Possible 1970s bottling
    Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $150. 00
    Bottle
    $1800.00 Dozen
    ABV: 40%
An old Highland Queen bottling, probably from the 1970s and bottled for the US market. At this time, key malts included Glenmorangie and Glen Moray. Comparing blends from different eras is always an interesting exercise. This carries an unusually old age statement, as Highland Queen has typically been marketed as a young whisky.
Note label shows some ware and tare. Chip on shoulder of bottle. Also missing label with bottle size statement.

The legend of Green Plaid is even more ancient than the distilling of Scotch Whisky. 'Plaid' is the traditional Scottish name for the heavy woolen tartan material used to make the famous kilt. It is thought that Green Plaid was worn by the first Lord of the Isles, a 12th Century Viking Warrior called Somerled. Today the Lord of the Isles tartan is incorporated into the label of each bottle of Inver House whisky.

Founded in 1964, Inver House is an independent Scottish based company. Within their portfolio there are five distilleries –Pulteney, Balblair, Speyburn, Knockdhu and Balmenach – each producing its own distinctive, individual single malt whisky. The component distillates of the Inverhouse blend are specially selected from the four principal regions of Scotch whisky production - Speyside, Northern Highland, West of Scotland Isles and the Southern Lowland regions. Centrally located in Airdrie, the company is well placed with warehousing for 500,000 barrels of whisky plus state of the art blending and laboratory facilities.
