Balcones Texas 100 Proof Rye Whisky (700ml)
    Waco, Texas, UNITED STATES
    $125. 00
    Bottle
    $1500.00 Dozen
    ABV: 50%
First released in early 2018 as part of the distillery's 10th anniversary celebrations, Balcone's rye uses a mash bill that includes 80% raw elbon grain from north and northwest Texas as well as crystal, chocolate, and roasted rye varieties. Aged just under two years in new American oak barrels, it's set to be a permanent addition to the range. Like the other variants, it comes non chill filtered.

Other reviews... The nose has a bright note of lime, as well as dried herbs including coriander, parsley, and dill. Bonfire smoke and charred oak are in the mix, along with rich caramel. The palate blends sweet vanilla and toffee with smoked wood, apples, peanut shells, and a peppery spice embellishing the background. The finish is dark chocolate, espresso, peanut brittle, and more charred oak, along with a lingering, pleasant cigar aftertaste.

Bardstown Bourbon Co. WVGBC Infrared Cherry Oak Barrel Finish Blended Rye Whiskey (750ml)
    Kentucky, UNITED STATES
    $240. 00
    Bottle
    $2880.00 Dozen
    ABV: 55%

Nestled in Bardstown, the Bourbon Capital of the World, the Bardstown Bourbon Company is a new breed of whiskey maker, building a reputation for innovation while honouring tradition. The company blends Bourbon and Irish Whiskey, Canadian Whiskey and Bourbon or Bourbon and Rye as well as experimenting with a wide range of wood finishes. This bottling is a case in point: Their first cooperage collaboration, celebrating the equally forward-thinking West Virginia Great Barrel Company. A synergy in modern production led to a custom blend aged in cherry wood barrels toasted with infrared technology.

According to drinkhacker.com, "The barrels are composed of alternating staves of lightly toasted cherry oak, medium toasted cherry oak, and the more common American oak. However, it’s the final distinctive detail that gets top billing on the bottle – those toasted staves were created using infrared technology. In speaking with Bardstown Bourbon Company’s VP of Hospitality and Product Development Dan Callaway, he told me that the idea behind utilizing infrared toasting was to reduce the tannins from a second barreling. "We were looking for a cooperage to innovate with on barrel maturation and we found the infrared toasted cherry wood was a perfect match for 95/5 rye,” Dan says. “I started about 1.5 years ago and did tons of experiments with bourbon and rye, as well as different toasts.”

We received a 50ml sample. Being a blend of 6 year old Indiana rye with 12 year old Canadian whiskey, this is not exactly a mainstream style. Some of the usual sharpness and definition of the grain feels like it's been soaked up by the oak, yet even from our small taste, the flavour saturation is impressive. Medium spices and bitter dark chocolate rise to moderate the sugars, closing with a mouth coating, oily finish. Is it more like a rye or is it more like a Bourbon? Either way, it's a fascinating take. 55% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Wow, I don’t understand the mad scientist stuff they’re doing at Bardstown, with different types of oak, infrared trickery, and bringing the Canadians into this, but it’s working because Bardstown Bourbon Company West Virginia Great Barrel Company Rye is one of the best rye’s I’ve ever had. It’s almost a crime that I got a free media sample of something this good. - thewhiskeyshelf.com

Notes from the producers... Almond, cinnamon, potpourri, and baked cherry circle traditional rye notes of mint and herbal tea. A luscious mouthfeel leads to a luxurious balance between lightly tannic oak and rich berry compote.

Bulleit 95 Straight Rye Whiskey (700ml)
    Lawrenceburg, Indiana, UNITED STATES
    $75. 99
    Bottle
    $911.88 Dozen
    ABV: 45%

In 2004 Bulleit won the Gold Medal for being in the top of its class at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition - beating more expensive and better known premium bourbons such as Knob Creek, Maker's Mark and Jim Beam Black. The company has recently launched a cracking 95% rye packaged in the same award winning 1880s replica bottle design.

Owned by Diageo, Bulleit doesn’t technically distill its Bourbon or their new Rye. They contract with other distilleries to produce both of these whiskeys (the bourbon is made at Four Roses). The new 95 Rye gets its name from the 95% rye grain mash bill from Lawrenceburg Distillers Indiana (LDI).

Tasting note: Deep brassy gold appearance. From a freshly opened bottle, the nose takes some time to 'wake up' offering very little aroma whatsoever. Aeration gradually draws out moderate scents of stewed apple / apple peel, beeswax, mustard seed and spicy rye. Ten minutes more brings cocoa and hints of peppermint to the fore. Classic rye complexity. The palate delivers a wonderfully crisp, concentrated, spicy rye profile; mustard seed combines with dustings of dark chocolate and vanilla on the finish. Concludes with a prolonged, drying aftertaste with the spicy rye notes persisting. Cracking stuff! 45% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews...Only the rye from the Lawrenceburg Indiana distillery can quite conjure a perfect rye aroma such as this...Cinnamon and crunchy moscovado sugar crystal on green apple...so soft...so rigid...so unique...Exactly as the nose is fashioned, so is the delivery... But nothing compares in nose and delivery to this...in fact few whiskies in the world even get close. 45% Alc./Vol. 96 points - Jim Murrays Whisky Bible 2013size>

Elijah Craig Small Batch Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey (750ml)
    Kentucky, UNITED STATES
    $135. 00
    Bottle
    $1620.00 Dozen
    ABV: 47%

    Number 7 in Whisky Advocate's Top 20 for 2020.

Launched by Heaven Hill in the USA in early 2020, Elijah Craig Rye is made with a traditional mash bill of 51% rye, 35% corn and 14% malted barley. It's the same 'barely legal' recipe they use for whiskeys like Pikesville and Rittenhouse Rye, so called because it contains the bare minimum amount of rye required by law. Because the dominant secondary grain is corn, the flavour profile is reported to be quite similar to what might be expected from a Bourbon - which hooks into rye's popular resurgence. Hardcore Bourbon drinkers are being won over by whiskeys like this. Extra-aging remains a tenet of the Elijah Craig portfolio, and this is no exception. Expect a spicy sharpness from the rye balanced by sweetness from the corn. Llike the rest of the range, it comes packaged in the brand's iconic bottle shape. 47% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Elijah Craig always impresses with value, but until now has been confined to bourbon. This foray into rye whiskey sticks close to Elijah Craig's bourbon roots by using only the minimum-required 51% rye in its formulation; however, it does achieve a nice departure in flavor. Aromas include butterscotch, caramel-nut clusters, and peppery spice. The spice ramps up on the palate, carried forward by the full body, hearty proof, and mouth-coating texture, as cherry cola, baking chocolate, and darker fruits emerge. Priced a notch below comparable peers, this rye delivers powerful flavors that feel excitingly untamed, and will impress bourbon and rye lovers alike. 94 points - whiskyadvocate.com

...Superbly made. And as relaxed yet beautifully busy as ol' Earl Scruggs on his banjo. And just as note perfect. 94.5 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible.

...Elijah Craig Rye's combination of a flavor profile with mass appeal, great price, and recognizable branding makes it a contender for becoming one of the most popular ryes on the market. Many people are already familiar with the Elijah Craig brand, so it makes perfect sense that Heaven Hill would introduce a rye to sit beside its popular Small Batch Bourbon counterpart. Put simply, Elijah Craig Rye is light and approachable, but it also lacks complexity and oak influence which I think will make it come across as somewhat boring to seasoned rye drinkers. While it may not wow anyone with its mild intensity of flavors, its approachability, recognizable branding, and ultimately its price point, will serve it well. - breakingbourbon.com

    George Dickel Rye Whiskey (750ml)
    Tennessee, UNITED STATES
    $129. 99
    Bottle
    $1559.88 Dozen
    ABV: 45%

Rumoured to be around five years old, Dickel's addition to the rye category is unashamedly 'high rye' in style, delivering a heavy load of spiced grain character in a 95% rye / 5% malted barley mash bill. Even though it's distilled by MGP, the Dickel brand leaves its mark: The whiskey is chill filtered through sugar maple charcoal and aged at the distillery using char #4 barrels with a #2 head (the same char level used for aging other Dickel labels). Good enough for straight sipping, it's also a great choice for classic cocktails like Old Fashioneds and Manhattans. 45% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Loaded with lime, grapefruit, lemon, and a hint of ripe melon—followed by bold notes of roasted rye grains. A smooth, balanced palate of lemon drops, candied orange slices, deeper berry notes, and spice aplenty. The fruit wins out, creating a soft profile with hints of bitter chocolate and grain. A long explosion of balanced spice punctuates a finish of honeyed lemon, butterscotch, and rye grain. Smooth, tasty, and well-balanced. 90 points - whiskyadvocate.com

Other reviews... Able to be appreciated by both new and veteran whiskey drinkers, George Dickel Rye delivers an enjoyable experience at a fantastic price. There’s not much to hate about Dickel’s sole rye whiskey. Sure it may not be the most complex rye you’ll ever sip on, but it will deliver a sip that you want to keep going back to. In fact I found myself going back more and more than I usually do when I review a whiskey. For years I used to pass this on the shelf thinking that I’ll get to it eventually, or telling myself how good can this be for $25. I now wholeheartedly regret that mindset, because this is one rye that you’ll be hard pressed not to like. - breakingbourbon.com

High West Barrel Select Double Rye Whiskey (750ml) - Whiskey Hunt Australia Selection
    Park City, Utah, UNITED STATES
    $160. 00
    Bottle
    $1920.00 Dozen
    ABV: 50.4%

WHA's first barrel pick for 2024 represents 228 bottles of High West Distillery Double Rye finished for 11 months in a Manhattan cask. "What's that?" you might ask. The distillery makes its own batches of the cocktail using sweet vermouth and aromatic bitters, matures the mix in ex-rye whiskey casks and markets it in 700ml bottles. Barrel #27342 was filled with an MGP mash bill of 95% straight rye / 5% malted barley and 80% rye / malted rye High West Distillate - hence the name 'Double Rye'. Both were a minimum of two years old. The nose takes a while to wake up, slowly releasing mixed nuts, light peppermint and bitter dark chocolate that's reflected on the palate as Brazil nuts, bitter dark chocolate and oily rye take over with interesting hints of dry triple sec. The texture builds with creamy vanillas and zippy rye spices maintaining momentum. This experiment takes rye on a slightly different tangent: mouth filling and enough to chew your way through, however it's hard to tell if the finishing has actually helped or hindered. 50.4% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

High West A Midwinter Nights Dram Straight Rye Whiskey (750ml)
    Park City, Utah, UNITED STATES
    $260. 00
    Bottle
    $3120.00 Dozen
    ABV: 49.3%

Named as a take off of Shakespeare's famous play, High West's blend of straight ryes sources whiskeys from MGP, however as of 2018 (the 6th Act), High West's own distillate is included. The mash bill of the two components is 95% rye / 5% barley (MGP), with an 80% rye / 20% malted rye mash bill from High West. The age of the whiskeys is said to be 4-7 years old, which is medium by rye standards. At the time of writing, we're onto the 8th edition. As this is a seasonal release (different 'vintages' are stated as different acts on the front label), batches will be subject to change without notice (the scene number just refers to different bottling days). The ryes are first aged in new, charred American oak, then blended and finished in French oak and ex-port barrels. Bottled at 49.3% and non chill filtered, the producers describe the flavour profile as being reminiscent of Christmas pudding.

Other reviews... The robust spicy rye notes are still present in the glass, but as it sits, red fruit tempers that just a bit. As you taste, the spicy rye comes again to the forefront along with vanilla and more red fruit. The finish is warm and spice filled with hints of chocolate and fresh whipped cream with a dash of white pepper. 92 points - distiller.com

INCLUDED IN WINE ENTHUSIAST'S TOP 100 SPIRITS OF 2020

[Sixth edition reviewed]... A nose of gingerbread, allspice, nutmeg, vanilla, and cinnamon melds with fragrant cedar chest, leather, and oak. The palate offers sweet blackberry, chocolate, raisins, and dried plums, along with toasted oak and tobacco, leading to a spicy finale. A beautiful balancing act and a wonderfully indulgent treat. 90 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: David Fleming (Spring 2019)

...The proportion of each whiskey is not revealed, though all are at least five years old. If I had to guess, I’d peg the percentages at 65% bourbon, 20% rye, and 15% Scotch. All the elements are here, dominated by vanilla and honey-flavored nougat. The nose offers the smoke — inescapable in even a mildly peated Scotch — and that carries through on the body, especially on the finish of the whiskey. In the middle, more sweetness, and a racy spiciness that speaks to the rye. (Peat will dominate all of these elements any day, especially the rye, hence my relatively low proportion of Scotch on my estimated blending bill.) All in all, well, it works. High West even goes so far as to say “you may not like it at first” but I’m liking it from the get-go. All kinds of complexity here — tobacco leaf, tea, wood, leather, blackberries — but it all comes together in the end. Whiskey fans served blind will undoubtedly guess this is Scotch — Highlands, maybe — and that will surely serve to inform many a bar bet over the coming months until Campfire is sold out. The rest of us can simply enjoy it on its own merits. 2012 review. - drinkhacker.com

    $1320.00 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

High West Distillery and Saloon started with one man’s passion to make a great Rocky Mountain Whiskey. Proprietor and distiller David Perkins married his background as a biochemist, his love of bourbon and cooking, and his passion for the American West to bring the craft of small-batch distilling back to Utah.

Double Rye! is a marriage of straight rye whiskies sourced from multiple distilleries that combines the feisty properties of a high rye 2-year-old with older material. The extra age provides some added sweetness to calm the "bite" of the younger rye.

Tasting note: [BATCH 12J16 tasted] Deep gold / brassy appearance. The aroma is more restrained than the Rendevous presenting an unusual combination of charry oak, vanilla wafer, clove and muddled mint followed by hints of apple strudel and dried banana. Compared to the Rendevous, the palate delivers a more opulent rye profile, with softer spices all round, and again, with an unusual dried banana / vanilla edge followed by hints of cocoa. Finishes more typically rye-like with a drying surge that includes hints of liquorice, crunchy rye grains and pulsing spices tailing off into the aftertaste. Perhaps not everyone’s idea of a ‘text book’ rye but immensely appealing and with a degree of complexity that keeps you intrigued. Non Chill filtered. 46% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... ...Perhaps the spiciest American whiskey I have ever tasted, yet at the same time, quite tame and mellow. Complex notes of mint, clove, cinnamon, licorice root, pine nuts, and dark chocolate, with a surprising dose of gin botanicals throughout. Intriguing, and a must-try for rye whiskey aficionados - even if only to satisfy your curiosity. 90 points - John Hansell, www.maltadvocate.com

Proprietor and distiller David Perkins married his background as a biochemist, his love of bourbon and cooking, and his passion for the American West to bring the craft of small-batch distilling back to Utah.

Rendezvous Rye is a blend of two exotic straight rye whiskies; one old, and one young. It marries the rich aromatic qualities of a 16-year-old, 95% rye mash bill whiskey with the bold, spicy properties of 6-year-old rye to create a full flavored, very complex whiskey.

Tasting note: [BATCH 12H14 tasted] Deep burnished copper / gold ochre colour. First inhalations reveal a mild shellac note alongside charry American oak. Several minutes in the glass yields hints of mint and old liquorice strap alongside spicy, apply rye that's enriched with further exposure becoming more apple crumble / toffee apple like. The palate delivers a classic, punchy rye. A full, round delivery is augmented by lively, perfectly balancing spices. Crisp, dry mouthfeel. Excellent concentration. Terrific balance. Long spicy rye aftertaste with a faint trace of liquorice emerging late. Loads of personality and complexity. Non chill filtered. 46% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... ...Thanks to the high rye content, this whisky is very spicy, with cinnamon, crisp mint and fennel. Underlying sweet notes of caramel, molasses, vanilla, macaroon, cocoa, and candied fruit … enhance the whiskey’s complexity. Following an Unaged Rye in 2012, Rested Rye (2014), and Single Barrel Rye (2016) comes this new expression made from a mash bill of 70% rye, 18% corn and 12% malted barley. It's reportedly composed of whiskeys up to five years old, with many barrels sourced from the higher sections of the rickhouse. Since Master Distiller, Jeff Arnett recognised their own customer base enjoy other styles of American whiskey, Jack Daniels has been slowly making inroads into this growing category. “Our whiskey-making process is so special, and it just makes sense for us to create our version of one of America’s first whiskeys,” he said . “This is rye whiskey made Jack’s way."

...It’s still early in Jack’s adventure into rye making, and with the company releasing a different rye product every year, a lot could change over the next few years. For now, this is yet another rye from Jack Daniel’s that shows a lot of promise, but at some point the company will need to prove themselves with a product that can stand on its own and go up against the best in the rye category. That may still be a few years down the road, but for a company as tried and true as Jack Daniel’s, they’ve been surprisingly whimsical with their rye product so far. While Jack’s Tennessee Rye doesn’t quite shine as bright as it could, it nevertheless still shines in its own unique way. 45% Alc./Vol.

    $779.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Rye whisky was the traditional American saddlebag whisky. It is, as its name suggests, simply made using a larger proportion of Rye as opposed to corn. Rye whisky must be produced at no more than 160 proof and be aged in new, charred oak barrels for at least two years to be designated 'straight'.

Tasting note: Amber gold. Some piercing rye spiciness that's also minty, mustard-like, then the sweeter base notes enter edging the bouquet towards rye-heavy Bourbon. Nice intensity with medium dry flavours suggesting dried dill and spearmint over background vanilla and bubblegum. Peppers up at the finish which is vibrant, warming, minty, mildly tannic, medium long and try to style. Value buy. 40% Alc./Vol.

    Kentucky, UNITED STATES
    $109. 99
    Bottle
    $1319.88 Dozen
    ABV: 50%
Tasting note: Deep old gold ochre colour. Dried apple mingling with hints of peppermint tea followed by some caramel / vanilla sweetness. Big but balanced in the mouth with the spirit just gently nipping the tongue. Not as robust as you might anticipate given the ABV, it features bittersweet charry oak, faint liquorice and apple pie-like flavours finishing reasonably vibrant and mildly minty. 50% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Though this new offering meets the technical criteria for rye (a mash bill of at least 51% rye), the sweet, caramelly flavors suggest a high-rye Bourbon—which makes sense considering that Knob Creek is best known for its Bourbon. Expect bold almond, oak, brown butter and pecan pie flavors. The drying baking-spice finish is more characteristic of rye, and has less bite than might be expected of a 100-proof spirit. 92 points - www.wineenthusiast.com

Rich copper color. Rich aromas of spiced nuts, dried fruits, cola nut, and honeyed cake with a supple, fruity-yet-dry medium-full body and a long, zesty candied citrus, pink pepper, anise, and mineral accented finish. A delicious and vibrant rye that is great on its own and in cocktails.93 points

Unlike the Knob Creek bourbons (which are 9 years old), there’s no age statement with this new rye, which tastes relatively younger. It’s bracing, vibrant, and spicy. (The rye contribution is unmistakable.) Cinnamon spice and crisp mint dominate, with charcoal, botanicals, ginger, nutmeg, honeyed fruit, vanilla, and caramel. Warming spice finish. Its dynamic personality should shine in cocktails, but from a sipping, drinking neat perspective, I wish it was a little older like its siblings. 85 points - www.maltadvocate.com (Summer 2012) Reviewed by: John Hansell

"...a highly distinctive rye that refuses to keep to the script." - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2023

On a short list the most desirable, super-premium American whiskeys, Pappy Van Winkle is usually near the top – if you can find it. But there’s another name in town: “Michter’s”, with roots going back to the 18th century. For scarcity, reputation and market value, Michter’s is now outdoing Van Winkle on every score. The ultra-aged releases are periodic and therefore actually far rarer than Pappy’s which are annual. Many consider older Michter's superior to the equivalent Van Winkles, especially if you prefer your whiskey to not be overly oaky. To top it off, a Michter’s 25 Year Old Rye has reached $8000 / bottle. Or there’s a 25 Year old for US $10,000 at Wally’s Liquor in the States. Take your pick. That’s the direction this brand is headed.

The modern Michter’s was created in the 1950s (then owner, Lou Forman combined his son’s names – Michael & Peter). Later in 1989, the company declared bankruptcy, abandoning the original Pennsylvania operation. In the 1990s, two entrepreneurs filed for the Michter’s trademark and relocated the brand in Louisville, Kentucky. The “New” Michter’s whiskeys come with a swag of 5 Star / Highest Recommendations from respected critics that’s confirmed by a strong following amongst bartenders (now number two in top-trending American whiskey brands globally). There are four tiers in the range - which is a little confusing at first. The "US*1" expressions are the entry level, so named to honour Michter’s heritage, harkening back to America’s first whiskey company in 1753. Then come the limited releases (toasted barrel finishes and cask strength), then the age statements, and finally, there's a selection of ultra-aged 25 year old+ super limited bottlings.

Master Distiller, Pam Heilmann, has extensive experience including time as manager at Booker Noe Distillery in Boston and 15 years with Beam Global. She’s helped out by Andrea Wilson, whose role is Master of Maturation. These ladies are very specific about the seasoning and toasting regimes of the wood they employ. They toast barrels before charring, which helps to make the wood’s sugars more accessible. They insist on barreling at a lower proof (103 instead of the standard 125), a practise which is claimed to get the sugars in oak to dissolve more readily into the distillate as it cycles in and out of the wood. Chill filtration is undertaken but customised to each whiskey's style. All Michter’s whiskeys are either ‘single barrel’ or ‘small batch’. Because “Small batch” is not a legally defined term in US whiskey regulation, many respected “small batch” brands are actually composed from hundreds or thousands of barrels, which helps to ‘lose’ sub-quality barrels in the blend. At Michter’s, the maximum “small batch” size is twenty full barrels. It explains why Heilmann and Wilson are more than a little fanatical about quality control, and you can sense it in the taste. Our sample was Lot L146456. The complex bouquet is peppery and true to style with lovely whiffs of dark rye bread; further air contact adding wax, dried apple, cinnamon and vanilla, even suggestions of herbal tea (think peppermint and chamomile). A somewhat hollow entry leads into a powerful, peppery rye attack with ryvita biscuit, dried apple and peppermint tea flavours carried by vibrant spices. Hints of vanilla and toffee apple in the drying fade. All up, a solid expression and a noteworthy addition to the category. 42.4% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... quite a vanilla-rich flourish to this. The grain keeps itself surprisingly low key... sharp, almost eyewateringly so... The sugars expected are replaced by an almost puckering fruitiness to the rye - very unusual...indeed, intriguing. A little cocoa by the mid point; dry and spicy, the rye has now almost vanished altogether... Follows no usual set pattern and insists on following its own singular route. 89.5 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2023

...The opening nosing passes detect soft scents of spicy rye; aeration adds notes of black pepper, marmalade and plum preserves. The oily palate entry makes the tongue tingle pleasantly; at midpalate this whiskey’s youth is accentuated by racy tastes of alcohol, spicy grain and light caramel. Finishes as sprightly and carefree as it starts. A straight rye with attitude. 90-95 points [tasted 2004] - wineenthusiast.com

...Aged 36 months-plus in new oak; otherwise no mashbill information is offered. Clear, spicy rye notes on the nose, with a dusting of sawdust. As the body develops, you get lots of caramel apple, more intense wood, and some bitter chocolate notes. While the nose offers tons of promise, frankly I was hoping for more on the palate. What comes across is a rather straightforward whiskey that masks its more interesting elements in lumber. Drinkable and mixable, but short on character. - drinkhacker.com

"If you’re a fan of traditional ryes, interested in how malting rye is a reinterpretation of just what a rye can taste like, Old Potrero will have a lot to offer." - breakingbourbon.com

Despite its name, Old Potrero is a relatively new whiskey. Fritz Maytag began trying his hand at the pot still in 1993, a time when the concept of craft American spirits simply didn’t exist. The first fruits were bottled uncut and unfiltered and received early critical acclaim. Not long after, things got serious. His series of 18th Century ryes became famous for pushing boundaries and re-invigorating the grain. The Anchor Brewing Company has changed hands several times since, but once again became independent after Japan’s Sapporo Holdings acquired the Anchor Brewing portion of the company in 2017, separating the two. Anchor Distilling changed its name to Hotaling & Co. after losing trademark rights to the ‘Anchor’ name to Sapporo after the deal - hence, we now have a new incarnation of this American gem, with a completely new presentation. The liquid inside follows Fritz Maytag's vision of what a traditional American Rye should be, only he's officially passed the torch to Bruce Joseph who is now Master Distiller.

We tasted several iterations of Old Potrero when it was released in batches referred to as 'Essays'. The last one was essay MCMXCIII. Since then, the quality and style has been well honed and maintained. Everything about this rye is great, from the profuse aromas of honey and dried herbs (tarragon, thyme), rye crackers, pencil shavings and peppercorns, through to a delivery that is never for a second hot, prickly or aggressive. What strikes you most about the palate is the superb texture: buttery, supple and perfectly rounded. Keeping the barrel input to a minimum really lets every aspect of the grain shine. Oily rye and honeycomb follow with sprinklings of oak shavings, vanilla, pepper and dried herbs (thyme, caraway and muddled mint). Brown sugar and dark chocolate unravel late in the aftertaste. From beginning to end, this brilliant, one-of-a-kind expression changes your perceptions of what rye whiskey can be. 48.5% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... Lively, aromatic, and grain-forward, with bright notes of red fruits, black currant, and roasted caraway seeds. Lots of depth on the palate, with baked raspberry and blackberry notes. It's hot and spicy, but water quells it without losing the spice explosion, red berry notes, and roasted rye. Warm and more mellow on the finish, with excellent integration of oak, coffee, and bitter chocolate. Spice and tartness, with ably balanced fruit. 90 points - whiskyadvocate.com

...A 100% malted rye mashbill combined with Hotaling & Co.’s style of whiskey making combines to create a whiskey that plays outside of the traditional rye whiskey box. I’ve often referred to Old Potrero whiskeys as hidden gems. Their distribution outside of the west coast is weak, and their marketing follows suit. Given the recent renaming of the company and rebranding of Old Potrero whiskeys, they seem to have renewed vigor. As someone who thoroughly enjoys the company’s whiskey despite some shortcomings, I’m curious if more people will be willing to give them a try. Their whiskeys taste unique, and while they don’t venture too deep into polarizing territory, they will challenge some. Using a pot still combined with their particular way of making whiskey has a certain amount of special sauce that seems to get overlooked by most whiskey drinkers. If you’re a fan of traditional ryes, interested in how malting rye is a reinterpretation of just what a rye can taste like, Old Potrero will have a lot to offer. - breakingbourbon.com

Made from 95% rye / 5% malted barley and aged for over four years in new charred oak. A soft, fruity rye, reminiscent of Sazerac in its subtly peach-apple aromatics and soft rounded mouthfeel. On the palate, dried apricots combine with a slathering of sweet spices; light oils add succulence and length to the finish, leaving you with orange curaçao and cocoa. One of the highlights in the Redwood lineup. Add a few drops of water to accent the keynote grain. Matured in northern California. 45% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews… Aromas of fresh grain, red berries, dried cherries, and fresh-cut lemon, overall a very fresh and lively nose that is beautifully fragrant and redolent of fresh morning fields. The palate is equally fresh, with balanced notes of red fruit, iced tea, and vanilla. The finish is quite long, with more vanilla, and lemon sorbet, balanced by savoury espresso. A smooth but complex rye with depth and lively flavors, but easy to savor. 92 points - whiskyadvocate.com

Named American Whiskey of the Year by Whisky Advocate Magazine in 2001.

Distilled in Spring 1983 and bottled in the Fall of 2001, this time capsule bottle harks back to the earliest days of BT's Antique Collection. When the Sazerac Company acquired what is now called Buffalo Trace distillery in 1992, one of their long-term intentions was to see the eponymous rye brand return. They began distilling it for the first time in 1998, introducing the modern version of Sazerac Rye in 2006. Prior to this, a Sazerac 18 year old was launched in 2000 as part of the now famous Antique Collection. These were bottled from a legendary batch of rye distilled by Schenley at Buffalo Trace when it was still known as George T. Stagg. Distilled in the early 1980s with the intention of releasing a rye line for its popular Cream of Kentucky brand, the company lost interest in the project and the casks were left to age far beyond the normal period for such whiskeys. To the surprise of many, the forgotten liquid had turned into an exceptional product. With 1984 being the final vintage for the Cream of Kentucky, the remaining casks were placed into steel tanks in 2004 to prevent over-maturing. This 2001 release was reportedly bottled directly from the wood. Meanwhile, the tanked rye continued to provide whiskey for the annual release Sazeracs until 2015 when the inventory finally ran out. 45% Alc./Vol. Collectable. (Information on this bottling was partly sourced from whiskyauctioneer.com).

Other reviews... Deep amber color. Bold and surprisingly youthful aromas, and quite vibrant for its age-huge spicy notes (mint, cinnamon, vanilla, anise, freshly ground pepper), with rich toffee, caramel and background fruit. Rich, enveloping body. Enormous in flavor, with youthful dynamic spices (mint, cinnamon, vanilla, pepper), wrapped in rich toffee and molasses, tamed by mature oak and leather notes. The flavors intensify on the palate, ultimately reaching a crescendo. The boldness of the spices and maturity of age dovetail perfectly. Its finish is very satisfying and seemingly eternal. 96 points - whiskyadvocate.com

"the nose and delivery are just about as good as it gets." - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2019

Sazerac Rye dates back to the 1800’s and symbolizes the tradition and history of New Orleans saloons. It was at the Sazerac Coffee House on Royal Street where local patrons were served toddies made with Rye whiskey and Peychaud’s Bitters. The libation became know as the “Sazerac” and America’s first branded cocktail was born. This 6 year-old version of the famous Sazerac Rye is produced at the scenic Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort (probably using a 'barely legal' rye recipe), home of numerous other whiskies such as Eagle Rare 10 year-old, Eagle Rare 17 year-old, Blanton's, Rock Hill Farms and George T. Stagg. The beautifully designed bottle harks back to the pre Civil War days when barrels of whisky were poured into ornately engraved decanters supplied by the distiller, displaying the colour of the whiskey to good effect. In what seems to be a company tradition, the price is nowhere near the kind of money many other ryes command.

Our re-tasting since last visiting this stalwart in 2008 found moderate aromas suggesting caraway and oak shavings then green apple, orange zest, wood spice and sweet nutty/vanilla notes. This is a soft, plush 'fruity' style without compromising depth of flavour - dried apricots, apply rye and white pepper come counterpointed by light vanilla oak. The keynote grain isn't aggressive like some others, while the balance is near perfect, and there's dark rye bread, more pepper and a subtle muddled mint refreshing the fade. In short - Sazerac is a broad appeal whiskey with enough mid-palate sweetness, complexity and kick to convert one-eyed Bourbon nuts - or even the odd malt enthusiast. Keep this as the 'proper' choice for a Manhattan or Sazerac Cocktail. 45% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... the nose and delivery are just about as good as it gets. Anyone thinking of making a clean and succulent rye whiskey should plant this on a dais and bow to it every morning before heading to the stillroom. 96 points- Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2019

... Youthful and very lively. Bold, crisp, spices (mint, cinnamon, vanilla) are softened by soothing, sweeter notes (candied fruit, coconut, caramel, and rum notes), becoming dry, flinty, and spicy on the finish. It is very clean and polished, and it is superior to other rye whiskeys in this age range. Nicely done! 88 points. (4th Quarter 2005 Issue-Vol. 14#4) - whiskyadvocate.com

This elder rye shows fine craftsmanship, balancing touches of toasted-spice and floral aromas, with dried herbs, candied orange peel, and mature varnish notes. Other reviews... 2022’s Thomas H. Handy delivers a bold, spicy sip with a base of raisin that’s characteristic of the brand. Thomas H. Handy receives the least attention of all the bottles in the Antique Collection for a number of reasons. It’s the youngest, typically coming in around 6 years old, and it’s a rye as opposed to a bourbon. Additionally, where a decade ago a barrel proof rye was fairly uncommon, barrel proof ryes have become increasingly popular in recent years, especially those with single digit age statements. But despite the fact that there are significantly more barrel proof ryes of a similar age available today, Thomas H. Handy still holds its own as one of the best. Oak isn’t on display here, instead, a grounding base of raisin and tobacco serves to hold up loads of spice and warming heat that’s not surprising at a proof north of 130. While Thomas H. Handy’s mashbill isn’t disclosed, it’s likely just over the legal requirement to be classified as a rye, as sweet flavors often shine through in various ways - even if some come through under the guise of a hot candy note. The bubble gum accent is also worth pointing out, another sweeter element and not one you notice too often in a whiskey. Overall, 2022’s Thomas H. Handy is fairly representative of the brand, and while it doesn’t hit the absolute highest point Handy has proven to be capable of, it’s a solid showing and one that fans won’t be disappointed in. - breakingbourbon.com

    ABV: 50%

Note: there's some bruising and indentations to the presentation box. Overall very good to excellent condition. One only from a private collection.

There are several rumours circulating around this very rare and collectible bottle. One of them reports that Julian Van Winkle claimed it to be the best or one of the best ryes he ever bottled. In his words, "it was about the best rye we put out". Distilled in 1985 from a mashbill of 38% corn, 51% rye and 11% malted barley, it was bottled in 2001 as denoted by the ‘A’ in the lot/bottle number, meaning it's actually 15 years old, as opposed to thirteen, as has been the case for subsequent releases.

Bottled by Julian Van Winkle III at Old Commonwealth distillery in Lawrenceburg, unlike later editions of Van Winkle Family Reserve, this was released at 100 proof and (importantly) unchillfiltered. According to one source, Julian also confirmed "...this un-chillfiltered version was an experiment for the European market at the request of a French customer"  and further notes "...this release does have some flavour lost in the regular chill filtered version."

Finally, this whiskey is presumed to have been distilled at Medley in Owensboro, with Cream of Kentucky rye from Bernheim blended through it (more recent bottlings probably contain whiskey distilled at Buffalo Trace). Still other sources suggest this is actually unblended Medley distillate (the Medley family has a long history of bourbon distillation going back eight generations).

There's more information available on this unusual bottling here - ohgo.sh/archive/vintage-rye-whiskey-review/ "Vintage ryes are produced by Kentucky Bourbon Distillers in Bardstown, Kentucky. Three bourbons, at 17, 21 and 23 years old, and two ryes, at 21 and 23 years old, are available under the “Vintage” label, all coming from some of the oldest barrels KBD have in their warehouses. A number of other bottlings on test here also come from the KBD warehouses, including Black Maple Hill and The Bitter Truth, so it will be interesting to see how these whiskeys compare.

There’s no hiding the Vintage 23 has spent twenty three years in oak… from the first sniff you get a heavy dose of woody notes as well as some zest and cinnamon. In the mouth the woodiness continues, but you also get a lot more zest and fruit than is present in the 21 year old. The whiskey certainly isn’t over mellowed though, there is plenty of peppery spice and a fairly hot finish on the back of the throat. Adding ice tones down the finish a little, but the Vintage 23 still has a strong pepper note. For sipping the wood and pepper notes can sometimes be a little much, but the strong flavours make me excited to see how this compares in something like an Old Fashioned. Interesting to note how different the Vintage 23 is to the Black Maple Hill 23, two ostensibly similar whiskeys from the same distilleries stocks.47% Alc./Vol.

Since 2015, Whistle Pig has been distilling its own rye and aging it in oak harvested from their 450-acre property, but only select releases are 100% from Vermont. To create older whiskeys like this, Whistle Pig continues to source rye from Canada. First offered in 2019 and now annually, Double Malt is the brand's oldest expression, distilled with a base of 79% rye for bold, peppery spice and 15% malted rye for a soft, floral and earthy character. A final 6% of malted barley brings rich, sweet, toasted notes. Taking the expansive palate even further, this edition is finished in Spanish PX Sherry casks (sweet sherry) resulting in additional notes of caramel and smoked maple. Beautifully presented from the inside out and housed in an oval decanter, the outturn is reported to be around 10,000 bottles globally. 46% Alc./Vol. Very limited stocks.

Notes from the producers... Nose: Sweet and aromatic, with toasted almonds, caramel and subtle, smoked maple. Palate: A rush of warmth, melting into barely sweet, grassy, spice with a lingering soft honey note. Finish: Lengthy and lingering dried fruit.

Launched in 2022, the ninth edition in The Boss Hog series was an all-lady effort crafted by Head Blender, Meghan Ireland and Head of Whisky Development, Liz Rhoades. Inspired by the Nine Muses of Greek mythology, each component was first aged in American oak and then finished in two types of seasoned casks - Greek fig nectar and farm-scratch Tentura, a Greek liqueur. Notably, both finishes were made by the Vermont distillery team using Greek and local ingredients. The nine Greek sirens and their respective arts adorn the bespoke pewter toppers, which vary from bottle to bottle. 52.2% Alc./Vol. Collectable.

Other reviews... "The nose is more brandy-like than whiskey-like with peaches, pears, and grapes and almost a mulled wine like aroma. The rye notes is there along with a smoky charred barrel aroma, but you've got to really get your nose in there. There's also a top note of honey which sits atop it all. Mind you, these are all pleasing aromas; just not ones you're used to finding in a whiskey. Moving on to the taste, this is where the rye kicks into gear. The darker grain notes are there along with some classic cherry and cola notes. The whiskey is on the dry, tannic side but the cask finishes have added some much needed sweetness making it overall just a little sweet. As you go back to grab another sniff and the mulled wine and honeyed fruit comes back again. Not entirely sure the flavors have quite meshed as it's a bit of back-and-forth on the flavors, but it's a not a bad way to spend the evening." 87 points - drinkhacker.com

Whistle Pig PiggyBack 6 Year Old 100% Rye Whiskey (700ml)
    UNITED STATES
    $104. 99
    Bottle
    $1259.88 Dozen
    ABV: 45%

There have been a few iterations of the Piggy Back Rye, some finished in different barrels, others bottled at a higher ABV. This 'general release' for Australia aims to capture the classic, spicy side of the grain. It started in the summer of 2018, when late distiller, Dave Pickerell and Master Blender, Pete Lynch, returned to WhistlePig’s warehouses to realise their dream of creating the ideal rye whiskey for sipping and cocktails. It was launched in select US markets in 2019 as a permanent addition to the WhistlePig core range and was the final product Dave Pickerell created for the company before his passing.

It’s a 100% rye aged six years. The original was bottled at a purposeful 96.56 proof, in tribute of Dave Pickerell’s birth year – 1956. This edition lands at 45%. At that slightly lower proof it remains a charismatic whiskey that delivers the goods. The fusion of ripe peach and grain aromas also includes crusty rye as well as hints of ginger bread, vanilla and mint. Medium to full bodied, it's beautifully rounded in the mouth (borderline buttery) with a high ease of drinkability that lands on the sweeter side - think cardamon, cocoa, cafe cremes and fresh-baked rye with hints of anise lifting the finish. The expected rye spices don't fully develop, but this remains substantial enough to enjoy straight and will contribute texture to Manhattans, Old Fashioneds, Vieux Carrés and more. Keen eyed followers of the brand will note the pig that graces the front label is not wearing the standard WhistlePig top hat, but rather a Stetson hat in honour of Dave Pickerell’s favourite head-ware. The bottle is also a slight departure from the standard Whistle Pig shape, making it more manoeuvrable for bartenders. 45% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... [96.56 proof bottling] The whiskey was created with cocktails in mind, but, as always, our review looks at the unadulterated product. Let’s dig in. The nose is boldly spicy in the way that 100% rye invariably is, with big cinnamon and clove notes complemented by a bold barrel char influence. Aromas of cherry pits, apricot, and an elusive tangerine note and some intrigue, but it’s the hint of maple syrup that drew me in the most.

There’s a lot going on, and with time in glass, the woodier notes begin to dominate, taking on a distinctly smoky character. That follows over the palate, which exhibits a lot of peppery bite at the start, though notes of salted caramel, gingersnaps, and banana walnut pancakes temper that heat. I get a mildly beefy edge later in the game, too. The finish isn’t as hot as expected, but it’s the lingering, somewhat raw spice quality that endures here the longest. All told it’s a fairly rustic spirit, a bit rough around the edges but dazzling in its complexity. Pickerell probably wouldn’t have had it any other way. - drinkhacker.com

    UNITED STATES

    $1643.88 Dozen
    ABV: 50%

Rye is a whiskey perhaps best known as the backbone of cocktails like the Manhattan, Sazerac and Old-Fashioned, however the last few decades has seen it re-gain traditional ground over bourbon and Tennessee whiskey as a standalone spirit. Among the more fanatical of the recent protagonists are the team behind Whistle Pig. First released in the summer of 2010 to great critical acclaim, their rye received 96 points from Wine Enthusiast, the highest rating ever for a rye whiskey, as well as a “highest recommendation” from Spirits Journal, plus accolades from The Wall Street Journal, GQ, Forbes, Maxim, Imbibe Magazine, and many others. For Australian rye whiskey enthusiasts, it became one the most awaited releases of the year.

The key figure behind production is David Pickerell. Fourteen years Master Distiller for Maker’s Mark in Loretto, Kentucky, a luminary of whiskey knowledge and one of the nation’s pre-eminent distillers, he arrived at Whistle Pig with a simple objective: To create the world's finest rye.

"You cannot get more flavour in whiskey than you can with rye", enthuses Pickerell.
"The bad news? From a business standpoint, it takes longer to age rye whiskey. Rye is stubborn and robust. It has spicy character, and a dark, rich flavour. To attain its signature smoothness, rye must be aged (a minimum of 9 years is ideal). Rye isn’t sweet. In fact, it contains less sugar than any other grain. The challenges involved in producing rye whiskey are many. But when handled properly, there is no comparison."

Pickerell illustrates the difference between rye and bourbon in food terms. "Think of the sweet flavour of a fluorescent yellow cornbread that you nosh with BBQ", he explains. "Now imagine the earthy, spicy, powerfully brooding flavour of rye bread or pumpernickel used at a gourmet sandwich shop".
These differences that express themselves in bread also come across through the distillation process. We tend to agree. Pure, aged rye tends to be more flavourful and complex than almost any corn-based whiskey.

Rye is also conducive to sustainable agriculture. It grows densely enough to exclude weeds, keeping the need for herbicides to a minimum, and it's an excellent scavenger of soil-bound nitrogen, rendering heavy fertilisation unnecessary.

Up until recently, Whistle Pig's rye was been distilled and matured in Western Canada (reputedly sourced from the Alberta Premium distillery), then bottled in Vermont, making them a ‘non-distiller producer’ or NDP like Willett, Jefferson's or Angel's Envy. In the summer of 2014, after a three year legal process, the company finally obtained a permit to construct a farm-style distillery, with all the rye grown on site. They continue to use new American Oak or early use bourbon barrels for all their maturation.

Retasted September 2020... Opens with orange zest developing aromas of oily rye, cumin, peppermint and anise ending with grainstore, new leather, vanilla and chocolate box. A full and oily attack; muddled mint and herbal tones combine with chewy grains; white pepper builds through the finish. Leaves you with peaches and cream. Oily, delicious, vibrant and long. Delivers the mouthfeel of a single malt while maintaining the distinctive qualities of rye. 50% Alc./Vol.

First tasted February 2015 [20ml sample] Bright gold. Somewhat muted with vanilla accents... more definitive aromas of rye bread and cigar box follow. Relatively sweet and sedate; juicy rye is beautifully harmonised with the oak. Love the texture. Fabulous balance. Cedar and cigar box, then hints of peppermint through the aftertaste. 93 points

Other reviews... Maturity meets verve with aromas of leather, dark berry fruit, and damp earth, lifted by lively spices—clove and cinnamon—along with vivid citrus and licorice nibs. The palate also sits in a sweet spot of maturity, as bright flavors of clove-studded orange and Creamsicle give way to bold peppery spice, before a finish of drying leather with fine oak tannins. 91 points - whiskyadvocate.com, Reviewed by: Jeffery Lindenmuth 2021

...First, a warning: this is only for those who like their rye big and brawny. It starts off innocuously with a maple-syrup color, and a pretty, complex and subtle scent: honey, vanilla, a sight medicinal tinge and faint clover notes. It feels silky on the tongue and at first, the flavors reflect caramel, burnt orange and a whisper of smoke, but then a mouth-warming wave of tannic bite sweeps over all and lingers for a good long time. Straight up or on the rocks. [Tasted 2010] 96 points- wineenthusiast.com

The third release of the distillery's annual 'Triple Terroir' Whiskey is created from home grown rye, distilled and proofed with local water and aged in the distillery's custom made Vermont white oak barrels. Crop No.003 is also something of a landmark, being the first ever majority Whistle Pig whiskey, comprised of 52% three year old Rye, blended with sourced whiskies. More details below.

Other reviews... A puzzling whiskey, with golden raisin and treacle aromas, as well as cereal and butternut squash. The palate is dry and herbal, with faint hints of vinous fruit, herbs and spices, and plenty of oak. It finishes short, with almond, chocolate, and amaro-like herbaceousness. The third batch of FarmStock, this includes 52% WhistlePig’s own 3 year old rye, along with 31% 6 year old rye from MGP and 17% 10 year old rye from Alberta Distillers.

Rated 97 points by Wine Enthusiast in the USA and ranked in the Top 100 Spirits for 2016.

Tasting note: Finished in Vermont oak, this expression brings more of the sweet wood to the fore while the rye takes back seat. Vanilla, maple syrup, cinnamon and orange zest on the nose, followed by a creamy delivery laced with sweet spices and oily rye. The key grain comes through most at the finish, but remains understated, even when the aftertaste is deceptively long. Endlessly sippable, the overall impression is more like a single malt whisky or Bourbon. 46% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... This remarkably complex sipper leads with caramel and vanilla, then reverberates with rounded dried fruit, sherry and almond, fading into a long, gentle baking spice finish. Made with 100% rye sourced from Canada, this is finished in barrels made from Vermont oak and bottled in Vermont. 97 points - Voted one of the Top 100 spirits of 2016 by Wine Enthusiast Magazine.

WhistlePig does nothing by half measures. They had massive oak trees culled from their Vermont property, coopered into heavily-charred barrels, then used them to finish batches of already mature 100% rye. Layer on layer of soft vanilla, old lumber, cinnamon, fresh orange peels, baking spice, dark fruits, and medicinal hints of resin. Peppery hot and oakily sweet. A slight dustiness and a big juicy butterscotch kiss. 46% Alc./Vol.

Whistle Pig Old World 12 Year Old Straight Rye Whiskey (700ml)
    UNITED STATES
    $159. 99
    Bottle
    $1919.88 Dozen
    ABV: 43%

Released in late June 2015, Whistle Pig Old World is the last in a series beginning in Spring 2014, during which the Indiana based NDP (Non Distiller Producer) finished 12-year-old-rye in Sauternes, Madeira and Port barrels respectively, each released as a limited edition. This bottling is a blend of all three cask types, being 30% Sauternes, 63% Madeira and 7% Port barrel matured rye. Produced from a mash of 95% rye and 5% malted barley, the name refers to "Old World" maturation techniques, particularly those used for single malt scotch whiskies, which inspired Master Distiller, Dave Pickerell to experiment with his own whiskey stocks. A softer, more rounded rye experience than Whistlepig's 10 year old, it offers peachy fruitiness and vanillas on the nose with the rye tamed. The oily delivery has a vaguely herbal edge, while the finish is more expansive - ripe peach notes are tempered by hints of pepper, orange chocolate and mint julep. The result is an easy-drinking, low-key style that should befriend Bourbon lovers as much as rye completionists. 43% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... this bottling balances sweetness and spice. The complex aroma suggests candied lemon peel, figs, caramel and a slight floral note. It's spicy on the palate, with orange peel segueing into a smooth vanilla and caramel exit. 92 points - wineenthusiast.com

...This rye flaunts some obvious age through the wood and varnish notes on its nose; earthy and lean, with ample oak, like opening an old wooden dresser drawer to find a spent sachet hinting of dried flowers and cardamom. The palate offers gentle sweetness, nougat-like, but is driven mostly by toasted pecan and walnuts, with dark chocolate-covered almonds on the finish. 88 points - whiskyadvocate.com

    ABV: 45.5%
Tasting note: [Batch 32] First matured in a once-used barrel that matured bourbon for a decade, the Widow Jane team added some fresh cut Applewood staves to the mix. Lighter and more Bourbonesque on the nose than the American oak version, this has mint, rock lollies, and juniper-like freshness to the nose. With air contact, oak shavings and a little caramel enter. Soft and accessible, the palate offers understated applemint and spicy rye flavours, ending fresh and finely tannic. Lingering oiliness sustains the length. Nice sipping rye. 45.5% Alc./Vol.

An American Whiskey gem and a five star bargain. Highest recommendation.

2020 batch tasted... [15ml sample] A bouquet you can really get lost in... Opens like fresh rye sour dough, turns vaguely herbal (caraway / dill) and follows in a mesmerising combination of apple mint, balsa wood and heavy vanillas. Mouthcoating, oily rye on entry. Astringent and classically spiced-up at mid palate. Mints and cherry chocolate through the finish. Seamless and sophisticated. Stays with you. Fabulous rye. 54.5% Alc./Vol.

Previous batch tasted: [30ml sample] Brilliant bronze / new copper penny colour. Initial pass finds aromas of cherry ripe chocolate bar, poached peaches and vanilla. Further air contact accents white pepper, applemint and oak shavings. The lusciously toasty, perfectly-rounded delivery has impeccable wood selection written all over it: Bittersweet spices challenge the sheer weight of the rye but the grain wins out in a rush of oils, dried peach, dark rye and peppermint. Remarkably accessible at natural strength, the aftertaste turns peppery, oaky, then intensely grainy and long. Some found this a 'fruitier' / more Bourbensque style compared with the 55.8% ABV bottling. Wins on length as the flavour rebounds over minutes. Highest recommendation. 54.5% Alc.Vol. 95 points

A very rare Willett release that's a must for any serious rye lover's collection. Distilled in April 1984, we have bottle #51, drawn from barrel No.10. One only to sell. Overall very good to excellent condition. 176 bottles produced.

Note: This bottling was for Pacific Edge and not the Japanese market. There's still a small number of the Japanese release 24 year old doing the rounds, however it's rumoured that these bottlings had more oak input, as was the preference in Japan at the time. The Pacific Edge bottling is meant to be smoother and better balanced.

    $1067.88 Dozen
    ABV: 45.2%
Tasting note: Bright polished copper-penny colour. Linseed oil gives way to pine needle, peppermint and sawn oak on the nose. Very low-key rye. Sedate on entry with delicate dried coconut and supporting apply rye accents on the finish. Medium long with subtle mint refreshing the aftertaste. Highly accessible. Should appeal to Bourbon drinkers more so than hardcore rye devotees. 45.2% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Distilled from a relatively low-rye mash of 53% rye, 33% corn, 14% malt; true to Woodford Reserve form, a mingling of whiskeys distilled at Woodford and at Brown-Forman in Louisville. Nose of leather, cinnamon, rye snappiness, and hints of red raspberry. Hot and lean on the palate, spicy/sweet until rye’s bitter layering floats in, making for a dry finish as the oak comes on stronger. Balances drinkable and elegant quite nicely, and it’s real Woodford. 88 points

    $1079.88 Dozen
    ABV: 45%
As opposed to their Bourbon, Yellow Rose rye is a sourced straight rye whiskey with a mash bill of 95% rye and 5% barley. It's bottled at the Texas distillery at 90 proof. All of the whiskeys in the blend are at least two years old, although most are four years old.

Tasting note: Atypical aromas are surprisingly broad and sweet given the mash bill: Boiled lollies, peppermint chocolate and peach nectar come to mind, followed by candied fruits and rye spices in the mouth. Rounds out with grilled pineapple and minty rye notes through the aftertaste. Interesting take. 45% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Sweet, warm, grassy, like a sunny day on the prairie. The alcohol heat quickly yields to a grass/mint sweetness—this is high-rye stuff—that picks up some oily rye notes as it slides into a finish that is both bitter and sweet without being bittersweet; the components remain discrete, not blending. Quite nice, and reasonably priced. Sourced whiskey (with the 95% rye mashbill that’s an LDI/MGP signature).

A whiskey described as "Aggressive, full of character and unapologetic."
Like Laws' standard 95% rye, this also contains 5% heirloom barley - the difference is it's aged for over four years instead of just three, thus meeting the standards of the 'Bottled in Bond Act of 1897.' The act also requires that the whiskey be a product of the grain of a single season, made by one distiller at a single distillery, and aged in a federal government-bonded warehouse. The act came as a response to the widespread adulteration in American whiskey around the late 19th century. It was an attempt by the federal government to act as a guarantor of the spirit's authenticity.

Other reviews... [Batch BB#4 tasted] A nice jolt of violets, pepper, and sawn oak on the nose is underscored by some green stick and leafy sassafras notes, turning a bit more dark and chewy on the palate, with caramel, figgy fruit, green peppercorns, and a long and bold finish dominated by dark chocolate. Secale Straight Rye takes its name from secale cereale, the Latin term for the rye grain. Using a mash of 50% raw and 50% malted rye produces a whiskey that balances the cereal qualities of malted grain with the assertive spice profile of its raw counterpart. 5% heirloom barley is also included. The final result is a distinctly nuanced style. Typical of small run bottlings, the flavour profile may vary from batch to batch.

Knockout rye from America's champion of big whisky. One cask for Australia only.

There are exclusive bottlings that rely more on novelty labels and limited volumes than what's actually inside the bottle. Then there are those who put substance first and bring something truly special to the table. From a category that's notoriously hard to master, here's one for rye lovers looking to up the ante: Aged in new American oak then finished in an x-Californian Pinot Noir cask for fifty nine months. Most Balcones absorb a lot of wood in a short time and can be a little shy from a fresh bottle. This is no exception, but given enough breathing the profile develops with spectacular results. In fact, it's likely only a handful of distilleries would be able to pull off something as intense and singular: Appley rye meets vanilla on the nose, building hints of red fruits, cocoa, muddled mint, ginger ale and charry oak. Ample air contact sees an initial bittersweetness replaced by the oily richness of the grain. The first taste creeps up, the second almost blows you away. Rye follows more rye with a layering that gets thicker, longer and more peppery. The finish soars, but the grand finale is the aftertaste that literally lasts for minutes, leaving you with traces of dark rye, peppermint chocolate, wood spice and balancing astringency. If you are a fan of big, bold whisky flavours, alongside Thomas Handy's Sazerac ($$$$), Millstone's 100 and some of Canada's finest, this rare and extreme rye experience is worth seeking out. One cask for the Australian importer only. 64.4% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

...A blend of Kentucky straight rye, Canadian rye from Alberta Distillery, and California port. Dark Rye was the first permanent line extension in the Basil Hayden lineup, initially released in 2017. Now four years later, the brand has experienced a bottle design refresh consistent with other bottles in the portfolio. Notably, Basil Hayden’s label has changed from “Basil Hayden’s” to simply “Basil Hayden” on all bottles as part of the redesign... A full-flavored fruit-forward affair that continues to deliver four years after its initial release. Not every whiskey is for everyone, and Dark Rye is certainly a good example of this. Its fruit-forward almost to a fault, with maybe a bit too much focus on the maraschino cherry flavor note which will undoubtedly be off-putting for some. Is Beam cheating time by blending with port instead of finishing in port barrels? Sure they are. But a heavy port-forward, readily-accessible, and fairly-priced whiskey is the result, and my guess is most of Basil Hayden’s fan base doesn’t really care if the port is added directly to the blend so long as they enjoy the end result. If you enjoy both red wine and whiskey, Dark Rye will probably be something you’ll enjoy as well. - breakingbourbon.com

American Rye whiskies tend to be much more flavourful than their corn heavy counterparts, with peppery flavours including rye bread, peppermint and sometimes dried herbal notes. They must be produced from a minimum of 51% rye, the remainder usually made up of corn or malted barley. Like Bourbon, the law requires maturation in new oak barrels for a minimum of two years for the whisky to be designated 'Straight Rye". Some famous examples include Rittenhouse, Sazerac and Pikesville.
