1792 Bottled In Bond Vol.II Single Barrel Bourbon Whiskey (750ml) - Whiskey Hunt Australia Exclusive - Retail Partner Release
    Kentucky, UNITED STATES
    $150. 00
    Bottle
    $1800.00 Dozen
    ABV: 50%

For this barrel selection, WHA called in some of the most experienced whiskey folks they know - their six retail partners around Australia. Samples were distributed with simple instructions: Give each example a rating along with your tasting notes. WHA tallied up the scores and the result was this 1792 Bottled in Bond Bourbon single barrel pick. American whiskey boffins will already know that in 1897, the Bottled-in-Bond Act revolutionized the quality of American whiskey, requiring that it be a product of the grain of a single season, made by one distiller at a single distillery and aged in a federal government-bonded warehouse. The act came as a response to the widespread adulteration in American whiskey around the late 19th century. It was an attempt by the federal government to act as a guarantor of the spirit's authenticity. Carrying on that tradition, barrel # 8175 was filled on the 10/10/14 and bottled on the 1/6/23 making it eight years and eight months old with a yield of 192 bottles for Australia only. The group tasting notes include aromas and flavours of white chocolate, cherry strudel, light brown sugar, coconut husk, baking spice, banana bread, nutmeg, vanilla, light oak & cherry with a finish of light oak and brown lingering sugars. 50% Alc./Vol.

Angel's Envy 2015 Release Cask Strength Bourbon Whiskey (750ml)
    Kentucky, UNITED STATES
    $1199. 00
    Bottle
    $14388.00 Dozen
    ABV: 63.95%

Note: Product has come from a private collection and as such has some minor scuffing/scratches/handling marks.

Most retailers are lucky to get a handful of Angel's Envy cask strength editions each year - if anything at all. This bottling, which is a bit of an annual ritual for owners, Louisville Distilling, was limited to around 7500 bottles. Aged upwards of seven years in select American white oak barrels before being blended into a single batch and finished in ex-port casks, it lands at a massive 127.9 proof (bigger than the 2013 or 2014 expressions). We have one only from a private stash. Collectable.

Other reviews... The Angel's Envy Cask Strength port cask finished bourbon has developed a cult following, and it's easy to see why. Jumping out are marshmallow, caramel, vanilla, roasted nuts, with a hint of cardamom, coffee, and nutmeg, but true beauty lies in the pronounced pumpkin pie, dark chocolate, raw pine nut, caramel, and sweet maltiness. I'd love for this whiskey to finish longer, but it does give a hint of nutmeg toward the end. Sourced whiskey. 90 points - whiskyadvocate.com

...The nose is more restrained than in previous years, offering notes of cloves, barrel char, well-browned caramel, and a touch of smoke. The body is less Port-forward than in prior years also, showcasing notes of figs, dark chocolate, toasted brioche, and a finish that leads more to a prune character than the traditionally Port-focused raisin. Echoes of sweet tea endure as the finish fades — and all of it is remarkably restrained and in balance, a rare feat considering the alcohol level we’re working with here. As always, of course, it’s great stuff. - drinkhacker.com

Lincoln Henderson is an iconic Brown-Forman master distiller who helped develop several well-known brands, including Woodford Reserve, Gentleman Jack and Jack Daniel's Single Barrel. His son, Wes, went onto found Angel's Envy. Before his father's passing in 2013, Lincoln worked on selecting and perfecting the blend for the brand. This is his pride and joy, and unusually for Bourbon, it's finished in French oak Ruby Port Barrels for up to six months. If you’re after a premium Bourbon that’s affordable while delivering a little something extra, this should work. Charry oak, candied citrus peels and cherry ripe chocolate come together on the nose with hints of sticky date in tow. Come back after further air contact and you get more nuanced wine input. It’s a one of a kind Bourbon bouquet that follows through on the palate with spiced plums, blueberry bubble gum and semi-ripe raspberries alongside more familiar Bourbon notes. The finish extends that cherry ripe dark chocolate overlay with soft rye spices, moderate astringency and more vanilla and chocolate. A trailblazer when it was first released in 2011, at around six years old, it's a Kentuckian with a delicious twist. Holding it back is a somewhat tame ABV. Look out for the high-strength bottlings, but expect to pay much, much more. 43.3% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... A beautiful, mouthwatering newcomer to the whiskey scene. Named for the “angel's share,” the portion that evaporates from the barrel during the aging process, this golden amber spirit is finished in Port barrels, which explains those juicy red-fruit notes that slide into the long finish. Look for orange peel, vanilla and roasted nut flavors, too. 98 points - wineenthusiast.com

...Cherry cough syrup, cinnamon French toast, spearmint gum, boiled peanuts, dried flowers, hay, and a hint of sandalwood on a sweet and earthy nose. Creamy texture on a bitter palate, with dried cherries and strawberries, cinnamon sugar, and chocolate. With water there is tart cherry cobbler. Good length on a woody finish, with some vanilla cream and spice.
    88 points - Ted Simmons 2021, whiskyadvocate.com

...Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey finished in a port pipe. This is veteran master distiller Lincoln Henderson’s newest creation, and it’s a beauty. Richly textured, silky, and well-rounded, with ripe berried fruits, candied tangerine, light toffee, maple syrup, and creamy vanilla, sprinkled with spice (cinnamon, hint of mint). Smooth, silky finish, and dangerously drinkable! The port pipe notes dovetail perfectly. Lovely just the way it is, but it’s begging for a cigar. My only gripe: why not 45 or 50% ABV? But I’m splitting hairs. I really enjoy this stuff!

“Five Stars, Highest Recommendation” - spiritsjournal.com

...Muted vanilla, light oak, and leather swirl together and are joined are dashes of green peppercorn and syrup-soaked raisins. For being finished for 3-6 months, you’d expect more of an impact from the port barrels. However, this isn’t the case. While the flavors present are nice, the mouthfeel is on the thinner side, which detracts from their impact... If you haven't explored barrel finished bourbons yet, Angel’s Envy Port Finished Bourbon is a good start. It’s not so influenced that you’ll be turned off if you discover you're more of a traditionalist, and if you find that you like it, you’ll have a suitable introduction to a range of barrel finished products to further explore. On top of that, it provides a really nice subtle twist for lower proof cocktails. Credit needs to be given to this trailblazer of a product, however it also needs to be realized that this bourbon leaves you wanting just a bit more. - breakingbourbon.com

Colonel E.H. Taylor 100 Proof Single Barrel Bourbon Whiskey (750ml) - Whiskey Hunt Australia Selection

    Bottle
    $3588.00 Dozen
    ABV: 50%

This is the first time WHA have secured an E.H. Taylor for their Barrel Select series. Distilled on the 13th of March 2013 and bottled in December 2022 at nine years and nine months, it earns its single cask classification delivering the kind of character and poise you'd expect from a high performance 15 year old. One minor quibble might be a delicate bittersweetness through the middle stage, but that's eclipsed by some beautifully expressed American oak, the palate unfolding with creamy vanillas, cherry chocolate, candied orange and hints of apple-laced rye. The balance is excellent, and the oily texture lingers, extending the aftertaste of cinnamon, vanilla and charry oak. Our tasting was limited to a 15ml sample. Knowing how these Bourbons can develop we'd expect it to be better again after air contact. Like most WHA bottlings the only downside is the tiny yield with just 156 bottles imported to Australia. 50% Alc./Vol. Collectable.

A delightful mélange of flavors on the nose—new leather, orange peel, angel food cake, orange Creamsicle, cooked peaches, sweetened ice tea, dark chocolate, nutmeg, and allspice. A well-structured, full-bodied palate starts with earthy notes of warehouse and then lets fly with flavors of blackberry tart, nutmeg, pepper, and semi-sweet chocolate. A lighter but superbly balanced finish adds more dark chocolate, roasted pecans, cherry, tobacco, pepper, and beautifully integrated oak. 50.5% Alc./Vol. 92 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: David Fleming (Winter 2020)

...This year’s release of Eagle Rare 17 Year again sees 101 proof and ups the ante by carrying an 18 year old age statement as evidenced by the Fact Sheet from Buffalo Trace that accompanies the release. 18 years in oak can be tricky, as this much time aging can often leave a bourbon dominated by more oaky and earthy flavors. While aged oak is ever present throughout the sip and earthy flavors specifically in the finish remind you of Eagle Rare 17 Year's age, the bourbon is also full of wonderful nuanced flavors. The nose brings forth a complexity that reveals its layered nuances as you spend more time with it, while the palate delivers a great mix of dark fruits and sweet baking flavors that intertwine nicely together. All of this taken together delivers a well rounded sip on par with Eagle Rare 17 Year pours in recent memory. - breakingbourbon.com

"Arguably the best Barrel Proof release to date". - drinkhacker.com

Fans of full-proof, super-charged Kentucky styles will be keen to get their hands on this. Although there's too little to justify opening a bottle to review, Batch A120 is by several reports a phenomenal follow up to the acclaimed A119, but even more skewed towards palates that can handle the heat. If you loved A119 and agree it's is the way Bourbon ought to be bottled, you'll find this batch equally satisfying. The proof is marginally higher again. The critics are also closely aligned (it gets the same 94 point rating as A119 from whiskyadvocate, which is most people's 96+).

Made from a mash bill of 78% corn, 12% malted barley and 10% rye and designed to showcase the variety and complexity of Heaven Hill's finest stocks, for those new to the Barrel Proof series, three batches have been offered every year since 2013. Each is identified with a code in the form XMYY, where X is A, B, or C to designate the first, second, and third batches, respectively. M is the month and YY is the year. Thus, A120 was the first batch of 2020 released in January. As always, uncut, straight from the barrel, non-chill filtered and hoarded by collectors, the quantities imported remain negligible. There's no guarantee on future shipments. Winners will be need to be quick on the draw. Limited to one bottle per customer. 68.3% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... An herbal nose featuring menthol, eucalyptus, and horehound is endowed with plenty of earthy oak, evoking sawmill, empty wine casks, and dusty floorboards. Generous oak courses through the palate, the drying tannins reining in the dense sweetness as the whiskey brandishes bold spices, including allspice, pepper, and clove. Water gives this bourbon much needed room to run, revealing greater polish and rich layers of flavor. 94 points - whiskyadvocate.com - reviewed by: Jeffery Lindenmuth 2020

...Spoiler alert: A120 is going to be one of the more coveted expressions in this collection. While some of the ECBP releases can sometimes be overwhelming on the wood front, A120 finds a unique sense of balance. On the nose, there’s plenty of (at over 68% abv) heat here, but it masks a note of fresh-cut lumber that pairs deftly with spearmint, cherry pits, and smoky coal fire. It’s a blazer on the tongue, but incredibly expressive with counterbalancing notes of butterscotch and red pepper, raspberry and spice. Surprisingly approachable at full proof, water is a clear benefit, but only a couple of drops. This really brings out the fruity notes in the whiskey, along with a milk chocolate note that lingers on the finish. I had a hard time balancing the water here, as even a few drops too much will water the whiskey down too far. All told, it’s arguably the best Barrel Proof release to date. - Christopher Null, drinkhacker.com

....The first 2020 batch of Elijah Craig Barrel Proof delivers all the classic flavors you’ve come to expect. Rich in okay and sweeter sugary flavors, Batch A120 delivers a well rounded but fiery sip. The proof shines through, especially in the long lingering heat that develops in the finish. It’s not the best showing for the brand, however it’s also far from the worst and should please most Elijah Craig and high proof bourbon fans alike. - breakingbourbon.com

George Dickel Single Barrel 15 Year Old Tennessee Whiskey (750ml)
    Tennessee, UNITED STATES
    $499. 00
    Bottle
    $5988.00 Dozen
    ABV: 42.2%

NB: Alc./Vol. may vary from batch to batch. Diageo says the stocks in the program range between 40%-52.3% ABV.

Released in 2020 as part of a series of 'peak age' editions from Dickel, these high strength gems will please fans of Tennessee styles. Given they're drawn from single barrels, according to Dickel the profiles will range from "...notes of vanilla, toffee and treacle to rich leather, saddle oil and wood, to a more delicate perfume of fruit or lavender notes.” The Cascade Hollow distillery has been quietly producing exceptional whiskeys for years. Only recently has Dickel stepped into the spotlight, supplying a bevy of brands with well-aged Bourbons, filling the void of older MGP stocks which are now drying up. After winning several awards, including the #1 whisky on Whiskey Advocate's top 20 list, Dickel's older age statements are now in high demand. This 15 year old is also a relative rarity from the corporate side of the Bourbon market - and a welcome change from previous official bottlings. Going by the reviews below, it seems Master Distiller, Nicole Austin has saved the very best for these releases.

Other reviews... This has Dickel’s distinctive oily grain aromas: It’s packed with corn and peanuts, and also sweet with brown-sugar oatmeal and maple candy. Add a little water and voila! Orange peel and Luxardo cherry appear, creating an instant Old Fashioned. The palate is chewy and full-bodied, pepped up with cinnamon and dried ginger, and lengthened by grape jelly, Coca-Cola, Corn Nuts, and dried cherries. A full and lengthy finish sings with ginger, peanuts, and chocolaty oak. 52.3% Alc./Vol.
95 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: Susannah Skiver Barton (Spring 2021)

...On the nose, this single barrel shows all the hallmarks of classic, well-aged Dickel with rich caramel and subtly savory barrel notes. There’s also loads of baking spice, but unlike the Bottled in Bond 13 Year, the spices here skew towards the brighter end of the spectrum: clove, nutmeg, and freshly grated cinnamon, along with lots of sweet orange zest which really sets this nose apart from other Dickel offerings I’ve encountered. On the palate, that citrus element shines up front with candied peels and clove-studded orange before giving way to cinnamon sugar, buttery yeast rolls, and a gently warming finish of pralines and butter brickle ice cream. It’s not quite as balanced as the well-layered Bottled in Bond, but this is a single barrel, after all. Your mileage will certainly vary with these, but for 15-year-old single barrel American whiskey of this quality, it’s hard to imagine a better value right now. 9.5 / 10 - drinkhacker.com

"Featuring its highest proof in 6 years is a nice return to form for the brand that is best known for its big bold proof. Exceptional." - breakingbourbon.com

Distilled in the Spring of 2007 and bottled in Fall 2022, this year's Stagg was aged for a total of 15 years and 5 months.

Other reviews... After playing hooky last year and not showing up to the annual release party due to subpar quality, George T. Stagg is back. Featuring its highest proof in 6 years is a nice return to form for the brand that is best known for its big bold proof. While it has maintained a high quality over the years, its younger counterpart, Stagg (formally known as Stagg Jr.) has upstaged it on more than one occasion. Clearly this year's version of George T. Stagg is a reminder that Senior still knows best.  Featuring familiar scents of brown sugar and stewed apple, the introduction of amaretto is quite striking. Combined with a fusion of cognac and rum scents, it produces an aroma that is unique for the brand. It’s incredibly effective and starts the sip in a praiseworthy spot. The amaretto continues into the palate creating a sweet and nutty impact. This nuttiness is further accentuated with hazelnut, before transitioning to rich plum, vanilla, and classic Stagg heavy sweet oak. This layering makes the sip much more dynamic this year, where often Stagg can come across as very homogeneous in its flavor profile. The finish in turn starts off with a straightforward leather note, before transitioning to pomegranate molasses. There’s also a minor musty tannic note that is fleeting and unlikely to be problematic for the majority of drinkers.  This year's release retains its classic heaviness that Stagg known for, but this slight introduction of fruity notes throughout is extremely welcome. The 2022 release of George T. Stagg is a welcomed one. Instead of being more of the same (which would be fine in and of itself), Stagg comes roaring back with some extra uniqueness in tow. Stagg holds a special place in the barrel proof bourbon realm as it is often unmistakable in its profile. While it sheds a small amount of its familiarity in order to offer something new, it's a better bourbon because of it. Exceptional. - breakingbourbon.com

This offers up warming ginger, candied orange, and wisps of furniture polish. The lavish and leathery oak flavors are apparent but don’t overwhelm the abundance of zippy, bright citrus—orange oil and yuzu—as the palate unleashes wave upon wave of spices that keep you guessing where it will head next. High West Barrel Select Double Rye Whiskey (750ml) - Whiskey Hunt Australia Selection
    Park City, Utah, UNITED STATES
    $160. 00
    Bottle
    $1920.00 Dozen
    ABV: 50.4%

WHA's first barrel pick for 2024 represents 228 bottles of High West Distillery Double Rye finished for 11 months in a Manhattan cask. "What's that?" you might ask. The distillery makes its own batches of the cocktail using sweet vermouth and aromatic bitters, matures the mix in ex-rye whiskey casks and markets it in 700ml bottles. Barrel #27342 was filled with an MGP mash bill of 95% straight rye / 5% malted barley and 80% rye / malted rye High West Distillate - hence the name 'Double Rye'. Both were a minimum of two years old. The nose takes a while to wake up, slowly releasing mixed nuts, light peppermint and bitter dark chocolate that's reflected on the palate as Brazil nuts, bitter dark chocolate and oily rye take over with interesting hints of dry triple sec. The texture builds with creamy vanillas and zippy rye spices maintaining momentum. This experiment takes rye on a slightly different tangent: mouth filling and enough to chew your way through, however it's hard to tell if the finishing has actually helped or hindered. 50.4% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

A very sought after JD collectible.

Folks who knew Mr. Jack Daniel best also knew his name was really Jasper 'Jack' Daniel. This was the name raised in warmth over a formal dinner toast, engraved on invitations to his home for a special celebration or monogrammed on fine glass decanters of whiskey reserved for his own use. Jack Daniel's Monogram release celebrates America's revered gentleman distiller with a warm, amber sipping whiskey, bottled at 94 proof (47% Alc./Vol.) and packaged in a manner worthy of the formal signature of Jasper 'Jack' Daniel.

Australian Jack Daniel's collectors will be pleased to know that our American and European friends for once, will have a harder time procuring this gem than most.
One Jack Daniel's enthusiast's web site reports:
'Okay guys and girls, here it is, the ever so elusive Jack Daniels Monogram bottle. As we all know, this is the Holy Grail of the new Jack Daniels bottles - if you've got one in your collection, you can count yourself very lucky indeed. According to my sources, this bottle was produced specifically for the Far Eastern/Asian markets. As such, it is not available in the U.S. or Europe, and this is one of the reasons it is so rare and hard to source. This bottle and packaging was designed by Michael Osborne Design of San Francisco, the same company which designed the Jack Daniels Silver Select bottle. It comes in a beautiful leather pouch with the 'Monogramed' letters 'JD' in silver lettering on the glass itself...'

A sourced whiskey (8 to 9-year old bourbon from MGP in Indiana). This aims to recreate the flavour of a bygone brand, recently reestablished in 2015 in Washington DC. Comes packaged in a handsome art deco style bottle containing 'triple cask finished' whiskeys, including x-sherry and cognac. Caron Moonin from thewhiskeywash.com explains how Joseph Magnus came to be re-invigorated:
"According to the Washington City Paper, in 2007, Jimmy Turner found a bottle of bourbon in the closet while cleaning out his parents’ home after his mother died. The bottle was in fact a 100+ year-old bourbon passed down through generations. This discovery got Turner to learn more about his great-grandfather, Joseph A. Magnus. Magnus made bourbon, rye, whiskey, gin, and rum. This then led to more investigation, both in terms of family tree research and whiskey leads, to source some similar in flavor profile to this heirloom liquid treasure.

A year-and-a half ago, Jos. A. Magnus & Co., a bourbon and gin distillery, opened in Washington, D.C. The distillery currently offers two whiskies: Joseph Magnus Straight Bourbon and Murray Hill Club Bourbon, both of which are drawn from sourced whiskeys. As with Scotch, sometimes the bottle also tells part of the story. In this case, the distillery has said the design of the custom containers is “nspired by historic Magnus bourbon bottles. The base of this whiskey is supposed to resemble the old bottle found by Turner in the closet. From there, a triple-cask finished spirit was created via “a marriage of bourbon aged in white oak and finished in Oloroso Sherry, Pedro Ximenez Sherry, and Cognac casks." 50% Alc./Vol.

A brand that dates back to 1879 under the stewardship of Master Blender, C.M. Dedman, with the modern company revived in 2014, then acquired by Stoli in 2017 with plans to open up a new distillery using the brand name.

According to Kentucky Owl, “Confiscated pays tribute to the barrels the government seized from Dixon's great-great grandfather, C.M. Dedman, just ahead of Prohibition. Those barrels were never seen or tasted again. More than a century later, Confiscated is the first offering from Kentucky Owl that will be available in all 50 U.S. states.”
Sourced from undisclosed distillery[ies] in Kentucky, the bottle comes beautifully presented with an old school label, sub titled "The Wise Man's Bourbon". Very limited stocks.

Other reviews... The nose is spiced—cinnamon, allspice, clove, pepper—and rich with cooked fruit—blueberry jam, stewed plums, pomegranate molasses—as well as roasted peanuts, vanilla, and oak. In the mouth, there’s more liveliness, with Big Red gum, cherry pie, blackberry cobbler, peanuts, and cinnamon-apple coffee cake. It wraps up beautifully, with chili-chocolate, roasted nuts, and cigar end. Kentucky Owl doesn’t disclose the ages of the bourbons used in this bottling, but the balance of maturity on the nose and verve on the palate work to excellent effect.

Makers Mark Private Select Cask Strength Bourbon Whisky (700ml) - The Original Barracuda Selection
    Kentucky, UNITED STATES
    $165. 00
    Bottle
    $1980.00 Dozen

Beyond single barrel picks: Barrel customisation. A unique approach to the Private barrel program.

Whether you consider it genuinely novel or simply a clever gimmick, this series - which is rarely found in Australia - follows the success of the 2015 distillery-only release of Maker's 46 at cask strength. It's not quite the same as the Private Selection Wood Finished Collection, instead the Private Barrel Program is aimed at retail or restaurant partners. As with any private pick, you get to pre-taste and purchase a barrel. The twist is, you then choose ten finishing staves from a set of five options: Baked American Pure 2, Seared French Cuvee, Maker’s 46, Roasted French Mocha and Toasted French Spice. That's 1001 possible stave combinations. Given the number of potential combinations, not every bottling is going to be a winner. We feel this selection succeeds in taking Maker's in a new direction that's truly engaging.

The finishing staves were 2 x Baked American Pure 2, 1 x Seared French Cuvee, 3 x Maker's 46, 2 x Roasted French Mocha and 2 x Toasted French Spice. What firstly strikes you is the gorgeously pure, bright copper colour, followed by a bouquet that shifts ground and blossoms over five to ten minutes, opening with pecan pie, vanilla, dried coconut and light rye (even though there's none in the mashbill), later smelling more like Armagnac - think dates, dried apricots, brandy cream sauce and dark chocolate. Tasted undiluted it's unbelievably restrained - at least on entry where it hits the tongue pillow-soft. Once again, those classic Bourbon notes of vanilla oak and caramel arrive but, in this expression, half the finishing staves were French oak, which usually means more wood spice and astringency - consequently, it's Bourbon that's a balancing act between sugars and tannin. That also makes it more elegant than most. You've got to work this around your mouth to extract extra richness and / or give it plenty of time to breath. Those sweeter caramel-vanilla notes recover through the finish and aftertaste, mingling with cinnamon, clove, peppermint, dried fruits and satisfying spirit heat. If you're partial to high cocoa dark chocolate, you should love this, or if you just like variation in your American whiskeys, it offers a nice point of difference. As with the best wood aged spirits, we found its sweet spot after 20-30 minutes of breathing.

Commissioned by "The Original Barracuda", Dubai's largest retail wine and spirits store to celebrate their 25th Anniversary and labeled as such, according to the Maker's website, this is a single barrel bottling, however the total outturn isn't stated. You can also expect the mash bill to be the distillery's standard at 70% corn, 16% wheat and 14% malted barley. [55.35% Alc./Vol. barrel tasted] One shipment only.

A bottling for avid collectors. Regarding the dating, we know that the Van Winkle cognac-style bottle was introduced in 2013, but this also has the same label as the older squat bottles. It's not certain when the newer/current label with the old man was moved from the side to the centre of the label, and there is no laser code evident on this bottle, but the old style label would suggest this is one of the original cognac bottles still using the squat label. 53.5% Alc./Vol. One only.

A quasi-mythical bottling of the legendary wheated Bourbon that stems from the brand's earliest days - hence it was distilled at Stitzel-Weller. It was superseded by the Pappy Van Winkle 15 year old in 2004 / 2005, so stocks have been off the market for over a decade. Of all the wheated Bourbons out there, including Weller, Buffalo Trace, Maker’s Mark, Old Fitzgerald et al, the Van Winkle label is the most famous and sought after today. 53.5% Alc./Vol.

The esteemed Old Rip Van Winkle Bourbons are once again available in tiny quantities. This 107 proof (53.5%) 10 year old bottling replaced the previous 90 proof (45%) release. Back in 2009 we had an opportunity to taste a small sample from Batch #BU512. A robust sipping Bourbon with powerful, prickly, vanilla-heavy aromatics accompanied by marzipan and a touch of candied orange, it is equally concentrated and mouth-filling; Yet, for a high-strength offering, the approachability and balance at this proof were notable. 53.5% Alc./Vol.

It's no secret that Pappy Van Winkles are known as some of the best whiskeys money can buy - and the hardest to find. Millionaires have just as much difficulty as the average joe. But Pappy isn’t impossible to obtain, you just have to be ready to purchase on release. About 80,000 bottles are offered annually. Truly unusual, uber-rare discoveries are the historical bottlings like this. Judged to be a pre-2006 release, one clue to the dating of Pappy Van Winkle is the raised lettering on the label. The words “Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve” were embossed so they protruded until around 2006, when a new label style was introduced that used flat lettering. You can see the difference in a side-by-side comparison of Pappy 15 from 2005 and 2008, for example. 53.5% Alc./Vol. One only.

"...beautifully constructed and remains one of my favorite bourbons ever." - breakingbourbon.com

In a blind taste test of whiskey labels from around the world, the Beverage Tasting Institute in Chicago gave the 20-year old Pappy Van Winkle's Family Reserve a 99 out of 100 rating... the highest mark ever awarded. It began as a rye-heavy style but it's now a wheated bourbon, making the whiskey softer, sweeter, mellower and more rounded. It remains the most-awarded of the Pappys, and is sometimes compared with top shelf cognac, helped by its slightly younger age and slightly lower proof.

...Amber mahogany. Rich, mature aromas of vanilla, cinnamon, leather, tea berry, coconut, and dark fruit-very complex indeed. Big, coating, soothing texture. Flavors are very mature, rounded and nicely balanced, with notes of molasses, dried fruit, cinnamon, and teaberry. It finishes long, with a very soothing demeanor.... An exemplary example of the style. 92 points - whiskyadvocate, 3rd Quarter 2001 Issue-Vol. 10#3

...This has always been my favorite Van Winkle bourbon and after this recent tasting, it remains that way. It has aspects of all of the other Van Winkle bourbons in a single package. It’s nose is by far the best out of the bunch. It proves how important a bourbon’s nose really is to the entire tasting experience. The palate features the rich fruit flavors of the 12 Year, the cinnamon of the 15 Year, and a touch less oak than the 23 Year. It’s beautifully constructed and remains one of my favorite bourbons ever. - breakingbourbon.com

...Nose: Deep, powerful and concentrated. This has moved into almost rancio territory: eucalypt/laurel, spice, burnt orange peel, apple, pear, biscuity wood. Palate: Soft and surprisingly delicate given the age. A charred note adds to the complexity. Gentle and elegant: cigar box, prune, molasses, soot. Finish: Long. In fact it’s very, very long and complex. Comment: A subtle sipper to be taken neat and definitely without ice! 90 points David Broom - whiskymag.com

Home to one of the highest rated whiskeys in the world, and now released bi-annually, the 23 year old began as a semi-annual bottling in 2005 that would quickly sell out upon release. That changed in 2010 when it was made a permanent member on the portfolio. Distilled and bottled by the Sazerac Company at its Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky, the various age statements on offer are regarded by many as some of the finest bourbons in the world. As the oldest of the Pappy Van Winkle line up, the 23 year old is also the woodiest of the range with a slightly diminished sweetness. However bourbons of this ilk always need ample air contact to show their finer points, which was precisely Jim Murray's experience upon re-tasting it for his 2020 Whisky Bible (95 points review below). Almost unobtainable, it routinely commands big dollars.

Other reviews... The corn oils kiss and caress, the tannins barge and batter in a good cop / bad cop delivery... one of the holy grails of bourbon is to produce a consistently a 23-25 year old bourbon which is still sweet and not tannin dominated: no easy task. [this is] unquestionably drier... there are still sugars enough to give some fabulous moments on the palate. The tannins do though, still have the biggest say. But remember, this whiskey has matured for a very long time. 47.8% Alc./Vol. 95 points - Jim Murrays Whisky Bible 2020

Named American Whiskey of the Year by Whisky Advocate Magazine in 2001.

Distilled in Spring 1983 and bottled in the Fall of 2001, this time capsule bottle harks back to the earliest days of BT's Antique Collection. When the Sazerac Company acquired what is now called Buffalo Trace distillery in 1992, one of their long-term intentions was to see the eponymous rye brand return. They began distilling it for the first time in 1998, introducing the modern version of Sazerac Rye in 2006. Prior to this, a Sazerac 18 year old was launched in 2000 as part of the now famous Antique Collection. These were bottled from a legendary batch of rye distilled by Schenley at Buffalo Trace when it was still known as George T. Stagg. Distilled in the early 1980s with the intention of releasing a rye line for its popular Cream of Kentucky brand, the company lost interest in the project and the casks were left to age far beyond the normal period for such whiskeys. To the surprise of many, the forgotten liquid had turned into an exceptional product. With 1984 being the final vintage for the Cream of Kentucky, the remaining casks were placed into steel tanks in 2004 to prevent over-maturing. This 2001 release was reportedly bottled directly from the wood. Meanwhile, the tanked rye continued to provide whiskey for the annual release Sazeracs until 2015 when the inventory finally ran out. 45% Alc./Vol. Collectable. (Information on this bottling was partly sourced from whiskyauctioneer.com).

Other reviews... Deep amber color. Bold and surprisingly youthful aromas, and quite vibrant for its age-huge spicy notes (mint, cinnamon, vanilla, anise, freshly ground pepper), with rich toffee, caramel and background fruit. Rich, enveloping body. Enormous in flavor, with youthful dynamic spices (mint, cinnamon, vanilla, pepper), wrapped in rich toffee and molasses, tamed by mature oak and leather notes. The flavors intensify on the palate, ultimately reaching a crescendo. The boldness of the spices and maturity of age dovetail perfectly. Its finish is very satisfying and seemingly eternal. 96 points - whiskyadvocate.com

The 2018 release of Buffalo Trace's Antique Collection, these releases are getting harder and harder to come across.

Claiming to have contributed to the making of this particular batch of Sazerac 18, famed whisky writer Jim Murray claims that it tastes the same as he remembers when working with Elmer T Lee.

    Other reviews....
This elder rye shows fine craftsmanship, balancing touches of toasted-spice and floral aromas, with dried herbs, candied orange peel, and mature varnish notes. It's big on the palate, with heaps of molasses, creamy vanilla sweetness, and orange Creamsicle that lead to pleasing cedar and sandalwood oak, with zesty grapefruit notes. The medium finish is satisfying and well balanced.

"...a solid showing and one that fans won’t be disappointed in". - breakingbourbon.com

Other reviews... 2022’s Thomas H. Handy delivers a bold, spicy sip with a base of raisin that’s characteristic of the brand. Thomas H. Handy receives the least attention of all the bottles in the Antique Collection for a number of reasons. It’s the youngest, typically coming in around 6 years old, and it’s a rye as opposed to a bourbon. Additionally, where a decade ago a barrel proof rye was fairly uncommon, barrel proof ryes have become increasingly popular in recent years, especially those with single digit age statements. But despite the fact that there are significantly more barrel proof ryes of a similar age available today, Thomas H. Handy still holds its own as one of the best. Oak isn’t on display here, instead, a grounding base of raisin and tobacco serves to hold up loads of spice and warming heat that’s not surprising at a proof north of 130. While Thomas H. Handy’s mashbill isn’t disclosed, it’s likely just over the legal requirement to be classified as a rye, as sweet flavors often shine through in various ways - even if some come through under the guise of a hot candy note. The bubble gum accent is also worth pointing out, another sweeter element and not one you notice too often in a whiskey. Overall, 2022’s Thomas H. Handy is fairly representative of the brand, and while it doesn’t hit the absolute highest point Handy has proven to be capable of, it’s a solid showing and one that fans won’t be disappointed in. - breakingbourbon.com

One of five bottlings in the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection, the 2018 Handy was matured for six years and four months in 73 hand picked barrels, then bottled uncut and unfiltered.

Other reviews.... Cereal grain notes and fresh-cut oak suggest some youthfulness here, but the stone fruits and hot caramel sundae appear dense and richly layered. On the palate the big, up-front sweetness evolves into nougat, marzipan, and caramel-covered apple, sprinkled with root beer spices, before more grain and pastry notes appear on the finish. Powerful and vibrant stuff.

    $8999. 00
    Bottle
    $107988.00 Dozen
    ABV: 50%

Note: there's some bruising and indentations to the presentation box. Overall very good to excellent condition. One only from a private collection.

There are several rumours circulating around this very rare and collectible bottle. One of them reports that Julian Van Winkle claimed it to be the best or one of the best ryes he ever bottled. In his words, "it was about the best rye we put out". Distilled in 1985 from a mashbill of 38% corn, 51% rye and 11% malted barley, it was bottled in 2001 as denoted by the ‘A’ in the lot/bottle number, meaning it's actually 15 years old, as opposed to thirteen, as has been the case for subsequent releases.

Bottled by Julian Van Winkle III at Old Commonwealth distillery in Lawrenceburg, unlike later editions of Van Winkle Family Reserve, this was released at 100 proof and (importantly) unchillfiltered. According to one source, Julian also confirmed "...this un-chillfiltered version was an experiment for the European market at the request of a French customer"  and further notes "...this release does have some flavour lost in the regular chill filtered version."

Finally, this whiskey is presumed to have been distilled at Medley in Owensboro, with Cream of Kentucky rye from Bernheim blended through it (more recent bottlings probably contain whiskey distilled at Buffalo Trace). Still other sources suggest this is actually unblended Medley distillate (the Medley family has a long history of bourbon distillation going back eight generations).

Other reviews... A supremely improbable rye that has managed to retain a zesty freshness over 15 Summers. Brilliant. 91 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2008

[2013 bottling tasted] I’ve always been a fan of Lot B. It’s sweet and fruity and easy to enjoy. It was the first Van Winkle bourbon I owned and I gladly shared it with whoever was interested in trying it. Of course I never had anyone refuse it, but more importantly, everyone that tried it, loved it. That’s a good way to sum up Lot B. It’s a crowd pleaser. It also has the most in common with Pappy 20 Year with its fruit-forward palate than any of the other Van Winkle bourbons. At the same time, it’s a bit simple and its proof is a bit light for its flavor profile. It’s often the most overlooked in the collection and part of that is probably due to its lackluster labeling. It deserves better. It’s a great bourbon with easy-to-enjoy flavors, but I just don’t know if it has enough of the “Pappy magic” to warrant the kind of price it commands on the secondary. If I’d never had it before, I’d gladly pay up, but after the hype fades, I’d think twice. - breakingbourbon.com

    UNITED STATES
    $600. 00
    Bottle
    $7200.00 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

Since 2015, Whistle Pig has been distilling its own rye and aging it in oak harvested from their 450-acre property, but only select releases are 100% from Vermont. To create older whiskeys like this, Whistle Pig continues to source rye from Canada. First offered in 2019 and now annually, Double Malt is the brand's oldest expression, distilled with a base of 79% rye for bold, peppery spice and 15% malted rye for a soft, floral and earthy character. A final 6% of malted barley brings rich, sweet, toasted notes. Taking the expansive palate even further, this edition is finished in Spanish PX Sherry casks (sweet sherry) resulting in additional notes of caramel and smoked maple. Beautifully presented from the inside out and housed in an oval decanter, the outturn is reported to be around 10,000 bottles globally. 46% Alc./Vol. Very limited stocks.

Notes from the producers... Nose: Sweet and aromatic, with toasted almonds, caramel and subtle, smoked maple. Palate: A rush of warmth, melting into barely sweet, grassy, spice with a lingering soft honey note. Finish: Lengthy and lingering dried fruit.

"...this rum cask-finished gem shows Russell in tremendous form." - whiskyadvocate.com

A high-proof 10 year old bourbon with a secondary maturation in casks that previously held 14 year old Jamaican pot still rum, marking the first rum cask finish in Wild Turkey’s history. Crafted by Master Distiller Eddie Russell in partnership with Dr. Joy Spence, the renowned Master Blender of Appleton Estate, Voyage reflects over 80 combined years of experience in crafting exceptional spirits. The collaboration makes sense given that both distilleries are owned by parent company, Campari. Russell wanted to use barrels that held pot still rum as opposed to column still rum for the finish, but Spence was a little dubious at first. “She said, ‘Son, you can’t handle that stuff, it’s too much for you,'” said Russell. “I’m like, let me try. It was 14-year-old pot still rum barrels, and we finished the whiskey in them for ten to 12 weeks... I wanted funk and fruit notes, a little bit of molasses and cocoa.” The praise is unanimous. The secondary maturation has been deftly handled. Voyage is a high-point in the Master’s Keep series. Save one for your collection, but get one to drink too. 53% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. Collectable.

Other reviews... Master distiller Eddie Russell’s latest iteration in the Master’s Keep collection is a 10 year old bourbon matured in No.-4 char barrels and then finished in Jamaican rum casks selected by Appleton Estate’s master blender Joy Spence. The whole series has been triumphant, but this rum cask-finished gem shows Russell in tremendous form... An alluring nose of vanilla, cinnamon, dried herbs, bitter chocolate, rickhouse, and red berries. Stupendous on the palate, with rich chocolate, herbal notes, brown sugar, honey, cherry, and peppery spice. With water it sweetens, bringing notes of almond, sweetened iced tea, and chocolate. Balanced and mellow, with a long finish of tobacco leaf, mellow spice, and rich chocolate. 96 points - No.5 in Whisky Advocate's top 20 whiskies for 2023. - whiskyadvocate.com

...There’s definitely a hint of the rum right from the start: The nose is sweeter than any Wild Turkey expression you’ve ever had, well-spiced with clear raisin notes paired with banana-walnut bread, then a rumbling note of barrel char. With time in glass the whiskey blows off some of its heavier fruit elements, with a lingering touch of creosote hanging in the air. The palate is again quite sweet and very fruit-forward. Fans of Wild Turkey may be taken aback by its power and expressiveness. You may even be forgiven for thinking this might be a whiskey-finished rum rather than the other way around. Again, bright notes of raisins, toasted nuts, and some coconut notes pop immediately, followed quickly by citrus and stone fruit elements. Surprisingly acidic, almost sour on the finish, there’s a bold, fermented cherry quality that sticks with you and feels more like its part of a cocktail than a straight whiskey. In some ways, it reminds me of WhistlePig’s insane Siren’s Song release from last year — though here some restraint has been exhibited. Hints of cocoa on the finish balance out some of the fruit, and while it’s enduringly sweet throughout, it never comes across as overblown. I feel like I could sip on this all day, and to be honest, I kind of did. Whiskey season is just about to get started, but this is an early Top 10 candidate, for sure. Question: Would it be crazy to use this as the base for a Mai Tai? Wrong answers only. - drinkhacker.com

...this secondary maturation has transformed this whiskey into something very special. It’s a beautiful bourbon, not overwhelmed by the rum cask finish as can sometimes happen. On the palate, there are notes of brown sugar, grape jelly, banana pudding, black pepper, cherry topped vanilla sundae, orange zest, and honeycomb. The Wild Turkey character is definitely still there, but it has become more of a background note with just enough of that recognizable grainy, nuttiness to complement the sweetness that came from the rum. 97 points - robbreport.com

Notes from the producers... aged in Wild Turkey’s classic No. 4 char barrels. After finishing in the Kentucky heat of a timber rickhouse, the result is a tropically influenced American icon, bursting with a palate of fruits, caramel and aged oak, and a warm, long-lasting finish of chocolate and spice.

Willett Family Estate releases used to be commonplace at liquor stores across America. Nowadays, they're a rare sight. Most gets purchased directly at the distillery. Australia is lucky to receive anything at all. The remarkably high standard and limited nature of official Willetts means they will be on collector's radars more than ever before. Followers of this brand know that Willett are more than a little fanatical about wood selection, so you can be sure the barrels used here have been selected by a producer at the very top of their game. The only downside is that prices have gone up in the last few years and we expect they'll continue to increase. The liquid here comes from a mashbill of 74% rye, 11% corn and 15% barley drawn from barrel 2368, bottled as a private selection for the Australian importer. 57.9% Alc./Vol.

An American Whiskey gem and a five star bargain. Highest recommendation.

2020 batch tasted... [15ml sample] A bouquet you can really get lost in... Opens like fresh rye sour dough, turns vaguely herbal (caraway / dill) and follows in a mesmerising combination of apple mint, balsa wood and heavy vanillas. Mouthcoating, oily rye on entry. Astringent and classically spiced-up at mid palate. Mints and cherry chocolate through the finish. Seamless and sophisticated. Stays with you. Fabulous rye. 54.5% Alc./Vol.

Previous batch tasted: [30ml sample] Brilliant bronze / new copper penny colour. Initial pass finds aromas of cherry ripe chocolate bar, poached peaches and vanilla. Further air contact accents white pepper, applemint and oak shavings. The lusciously toasty, perfectly-rounded delivery has impeccable wood selection written all over it: Bittersweet spices challenge the sheer weight of the rye but the grain wins out in a rush of oils, dried peach, dark rye and peppermint. Remarkably accessible at natural strength, the aftertaste turns peppery, oaky, then intensely grainy and long. Some found this a 'fruitier' / more Bourbensque style compared with the 55.8% ABV bottling. Wins on length as the flavour rebounds over minutes. Highest recommendation. 54.5% Alc.Vol. 95 points

2019 World Whisky of the Year. 97.5 points, Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2019

Consecutive releases of Weller rarely rate below 97 points from the likes of Jim Murray. John Hansell of whiskyadvocate.com notes, "The key to bourbons that use wheat instead of rye (like this Weller), is to get the right amount of wood influence to balance the sweet notes and add depth." Going by the review below, it sounds like the 2017 nails it. This is expected to go down as one of the greats...

Other reviews... This is a work of art. It begins by revealing vanilla, from custard to cake icing. Then it speaks caramel with a dark chew, crème brûlée, and Werther’s Original hard candy. From here, complexity takes over, with candied popcorn, butterscotch, chocolate ganache, French toast, maple, honey, pumpkin pie, fried pie dough, blueberries, and cinnamon, with hints of molasses and pecan. The long finish seems to offer a concentration of all the flavors. Delicious. Editor's Choice. 64.1% Alc./Vol.

WHA's fourth release from Barton Distillery comes after their first trip to Kentucky in over two years (thanks to covid). As always, the VIP group favoured a big and bold 1792, but found it hard going doing barrel selections in a freezing rickhouse. They ended up taking samples indoors to let them open up at room temperature. We recommend you do the same! Barrel #8467 is another solid and well-poised full-proof release, with interesting hints of liquorice bullets refreshing and threading through the corn oils and fresh oaky notes. No shortage of peppers add a warming kick to the creamy finish which has light vanilla and caramel in tow. Drawn from rick 6, floor 7 and aged just one month shy of eight years, it leans towards the drier, spicier side of Bourbon. 174 bottles have landed. 62.5% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

126 bottles for Whiskey Hunt Australia at an award-winning 125 proof.

Volume #3 in WHA's ongoing Barton series is an eight year old bottled at the same proof as Jim Murray's Whiskey of the Year pick for 2020 (from the same distillery). Barton don't always disclose the mash-bill, but the 1792s are typically "high rye", between 15% and 25%. A generously endowed Bourbon from start to finish, the bouquet sweeps you away: Once past the piquant, spirity whiffs, this is full and richly scented with deep, decadent aromas of sweet oak, Bounty bar, vanilla bean and rock candy, heightened by wisps of rye, liquorice and sprigs of mint. Potent yet beautifully rounded, the melting pot of flavours includes dried peach and banana, 'rock & rye' liqueur, fruit'n'nut chocolate and nougat; the finish bursting with sweet spices and cocoa and showing plenty of energy; Late rye adds a zap of cracked pepper with muddled mint further fine-tuning the balance. An ample whiskey to end a meal (with a cigar, perhaps?), Barrel #5976 resonates long after the first sip and ranks alongside WHA's finest picks to date. 126 bottles for Australia only. 62.5% Alc./Vol. Non-Chill filtered. Selected from Rick: 21 Floor: 6. Distilled: 30-01-13 Bottled: 26-03-2021.

Due to Covid travel restrictions the WHA team couldn't visit Kentucky last year. Luckily, Barton's Master Distiller, Danny Kahn came to the rescue by picking not one but two alpha barrels. This one's bottled in bond at 7.5 years of age. For those who don't know, the 1897 Bottled-in-Bond Act pretty much revolutionised the quality of American whiskey. To qualify, the whiskey has to be a product of the harvest of a single season, made by one distiller at a single distillery, and aged in a Federal Government-bonded warehouse. The Act was an attempt by the Government to guarantee the spirit's authenticity in response to the widespread adulteration of American whiskey around the late 19th century.

Barton's 1792 'Bottled in Bond' (BIB) was recently awarded Double Gold at the prestigious San Francisco World Spirits Competition, but this is the first time it's been available in Australia. Contrasted against WHA's previous 1792 selection, this comparatively relaxed, mellow middle-ager has a drinkability that belies its proof. It's also a 'fruitier' style of Bourbon; the aromas hint at peach pie, dried banana, apple tart as well more familiar notes of cinnamon, peppermint, cocoa and caramel fudge. Medium to full bodied, it sports a lovely balance of fruit and oak, plus a judicious splash of rye spices. The finish is peppery, with dried coconut, mint sprigs and chewy tannins. The overall impression is of a sleek and controlled Bourbon, its fruity-vanillan oak style bearing a passing resemblance to high quality Armagnac. Already sold out at WHA, we have a fraction of the 216 bottles imported. Given the provenance and very reasonable price, collectors and drinkers should snap this up. 50% Alc./Vol. Distilled Dec 2012. Bottled September 2020.

Tasting note: [20ml sample] Usually people sit on waiting lists for years to do a barrel pick, however WHA were lucky to gain access via a relationship with a local importer. The team traveled to Kentucky in May 2019, tasting their way through several barrels until they found the perfect whiskey. For many, Bourbon is all about good American oak. What you get here reflects something extra. The wood is clearly first class, but there’s layers beyond: Stay with it and you'll find anise, bounty bar, vanilla bean, caramel fudge, sandalwood, hints of rose water and more. It’s also a Bourbon of serious structure and body; completely mouth filling yet proportioned and relaxed at the same time. Sappy oak keeps it taut, but the sustained finish sweeps everything aside in a sensational surge of sugars and high-fidelity, oily, rye-fuelled spice, demonstrating the character you associate with spirits of a rare calibre. If you’re looking to take your experience of Bourbon to another level, get this. Kudos to the team at WHA for making the effort for Australia's (American) whiskey fans. 62.5% Alc./Vol.

    Kentucky, UNITED STATES
    $139. 99
    Bottle
    $1679.88 Dozen
    ABV: 49.3%
Tasting note: Racked in March 2021 as an eight year old, WHA's eighth single barrel release, and their fourth from the multi-award winning Barton 1792 distillery presents a deep topaz / amber colour with lots of wood spice before oily rye and a soothing, cool mint note complimenting the white pepper lift. 3-4 minutes in the glass draws out dried banana, caramel fudge and deep vanillas. Big, chewy and savoury with the sugars reigned in, a balance of grain and oak is achieved - the two reverberate off one another right through to the aftertaste. Mint-laced rye peaks at the finish alongside hints of banana bread, fresh oak, bitter chocolate and tingling spices. Overall, a peppery, slightly drier expression making for an appealing alternative to sweeter Bourbons. (Although not stated on the label, this is barrel #5941, otherwise identifiable by the distillation and bottling dates). 192 bottles for Australia only. 49.3% Alc./Vol.

Named in honour of the year Kentucky joined the United States, Barton 1792 Distillery was established in 1879 and continues today as the oldest fully-operating Distillery in Bardstown, Kentucky. Situated in heart of bourbon country on 196 acres, the distillery boasts 29 barrel aging warehouses and 22 other buildings including an impressive still house, and the legendary Tom Moore Spring.

    $11988.00 Dozen

The Angel’s Envy annual releases commenced in 2012. Each year a number of exceptional barrels are hand selected to be finished in European oak ex-port casks. Angel's Envy 2017 outturn was about 4,000 bottles - in line with previous releases but well down on the 2018 which yielded 12,000 bottles. We have just one to sell.

Chosen casks demonstrate a deep, dark richness, or a “caramelization,”. Usually they’re located towards the hotter top of the warehouse stacks. The finishing period in port casks can be for up to two years before blending and bottling. However as of 2016, the distillery began to pull back on the port finishing, concerned that wine flavours were becoming too strong. Reduced finishing resulted in a more 'bourbon-forward' expression in 2017. Bottled unfiltered at natural strength.

Other reviews... Initially, it’s extremely perfume-like, with floral notes often found in fragrances. Then the fruit completely takes over: banana, blueberry, plums, cherry, apple, pear, and quince. Of these, the banana lingers until chocolate and vanilla enter the picture, followed by hints of green pepper and graham cracker. Then, boom, baking spices launch into a lovely medium to long finish.

A very small volume of this sought after American Rye has come our way. Rarely found in Australia. It's super-high rye content combined with up to 18 months finishing in Caribbean rum casks makes it all the more unusual.

Other reviews... The folks at Angel’s Envy once again push the envelope with this 95% rye whiskey finished in Caribbean rum casks. Vibrant, spicy rye notes (cinnamon and mint) are tamed by rich maple syrup, graham cracker crust, nutty toffee, candy floss, subtle tropical fruit, and creamy vanilla. Warm, spicy, rummy finish. This is a mood whiskey—not one I would drink every day—but the flavors marry nicely and the sweetness tames this high-testosterone rye whiskey. Bonus points for uniqueness. Editor's Choice.

"Balcones are unquestionably the Masters of big whisky in the USA outside of Kentucky and Tennessee". - Jim Murray

Note: These have anything from superficial label damage to torn labels.

Besides Clear Creek Distillery in Oregon and Stranahan’s in Colorado, the brightest star in the Northern single malt firmament is Balcones. Deeply rooted in Texas climate and charisma, their single malts are bold, full of personality and rich in wood extracted spices. The very best become candidates for Balcone's 'Single Barrel Private Selection Program'. These offer the most complexity, intense palate weight and precocious balance (ABV and barrel type will vary depending on what edition you get). Usually cherry-picked for private sale, we have received cask #21826, an Oloroso finished whisky. The yield was miniscule, even by Texas standards - less than 100 bottles. Despite the cask having being used several times, the sherry influence is significant. It should appeal both to Scotch and Bourbon drinkers alike and is guaranteed to be one of the more short lived releases for 2021.

Keep in mind, this was matured in the very hot and dry Waco weather, so what you get both looks and tastes remarkably mature and complex for its age. The initial nosing finds lots of alcohol, wood and cocoa. It continues to richen and develop over five minutes in the glass adding liquorice bullets, roasted nuts, vanilla malt, dark chocolate and dried apricots to the olfactory range. Others will find still more. Swamped with an intense, dry, nutty Oloroso character and bottled at a formidable proof, this is surprisingly easily approached once passed the initial attack. And to balance the sherry and mid palate astringency, there's a perfect amount of honeyed malt and mocha sweetness at the finish. It just goes on and on, sprinkling the tongue with cinnamon and pepper along the way. While we use the term 'Sherry bomb' sparingly, what we have here is something more again. One of the most incendiary whisky sensations of the year.61.5% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Barrell Craft Spirits BCS Private Release D332 Single Barrel 13 Year Old Cask Strength Tennessee Bourbon Whiskey (750ml) - Barrel & Batch Selection
    Tennessee, UNITED STATES
    $235. 00
    Bottle
    $2820.00 Dozen
    ABV: 61.3%
Tasting note: This particular barrel was destined for a blend but the crew at BCS tried the liquid and knew that it was just too damn good to change it in any way. Discovered at the very top of a Tennessee rickhouse (we can't disclose which one), this is massive, weighty stuff and not for beginners. Eye watering whiffs of alcohol, shellac and spent barrel blow off revealing vanilla fudge, charry oak, menthol-rub and baking spices. Almost painfully intense, but equally absorbing: Vanillas are laid on in a thick, oily attack; the oaky astringency is salivating. Popcorn and rye dapple the tongue then vaporise. Bittersweet oak kicks in, before rye and corn oils rebound at the finish. Cascades of vanilla and cinnamon through the aftertaste. A Bourbon with brawn and an almost rustic Kentucky character - also reminiscent of Stagg Junior in its uncut, incendiary and over-the-top style. For anyone who thinks they've tried everything Tennessee has to offer. 61.3% Alc./Vol. Selected by Barrel & Batch for Australia only.

Notes from the bottlers... ...It’s big at 122.6 proof but has wonderful aromas of buttered popcorn, burnt orange peel, lemon zest, dried mango and red hots candy. The palate comes in fruity with cherry, orange and mango, followed by maple doughnuts and vanilla. It finishes with a hint of bitter orange and black tea then explodes with cinnamon, coriander, nutmeg.

Tasting note: [15ml sample] Whisky Hunt Australia hand picked this MGP seven year old 'Honey Barrel' with a group of passionate rye enthusiasts. Summed up as "an absolute stunner", cask M745 takes the grain to a new level of finesse. It teases with floral-soft, drier styled aromatics of cedar, sandalwood and distant spearmint before deeper, dark rye bread notes emerge, and unfolds with buttered buckwheat pancake and peach, wrapped in soft, sweet tannins, dappled with spikes of rye, pepper, juniper and peppermint lifting the finish. Easily the most polished and distinctive whiskey in the 2020 BCS collection, it's a vibrant, oily textured and deceptively long rye highlighting what curated and careful cask selections can offer.
