    42 Below Vodka (700ml)
    Auckland, NEW ZEALAND
    $62. 99
    Bottle
    $755.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

A New Zealand spirit which began as a hobby conceived in a garage on a few misspent weekends, 42 BELOW was the brainchild of an ex-advertising man who sought to harness New Zealand’s global reputation for cleanliness and freshness, and encapsulate this in a vodka with the same qualities.

Made in the Scandinavian style, 42 Below is distilled for purity rather than over powering flavour. However, there is still the weight associated with Slavic spirits, but without the polarising heat. The raw material is wheat from the Canterbury Plains, which is then distilled twice, before being ‘washed’ with spring water, achieving a saturation level that brings a level of purity and freshness to the spirit. 42 BELOW is then distilled a third time, before being charged with charcoal to remove any last impurities and filtered ready for dilution with spring water. All vodkas, regardless of the quality attained in the distillation, will stand and fall on the water source, which contributes so much to the finished product. In this sense, 42 BELOW, like Grey Goose, is distinguished by a water source of astonishing quality. The vodka is diluted with water which springs from deep beneath the volcanic plateau in the centre of New Zealand’s North Island. This spring has been graded 'Aa' by W.H.O., the global body responsible for measuring water quality across the planet, signifying water of unparalleled cleanliness and purity.

Tasting note: Smells of wet cement or damp stones in the initial minutes before the aromas shift gears, offering toasty, ash-like, smoky scents of tobacco leaf, roasted cereals, pencil eraser and vegetable oil. Palate entry shows an oily texture and tastes of charcoal and mildly sweet grain; midpalate displays well-structured flavors of lead pencil, off-dry grain and licorice. Finishes full in the mouth, acceptably fiery and off-dry. Rating: 90-95 points. 42%Alc./Vol. - www.wineenthusiast.com

Other reviews... Clear. warm creme anglaise and anise cookie aromas and peppercorn aromas. A round entry leads to a creamy, sweetish medium-bodied palate with sweet creamy vanilla, dried orchard fruit, and mild spice flavors. Finishes with a fruity, pink peppercorn fade. A fruity, creamy vodka for tropical cocktails. 42% Alc./Vol.  International Review of Spirits Award: Silver Medal

Vodka production is not a foreign concept in Tasmania, with almost all current whisky distilleries producing the adaptable sprit in order to maintain cash flow while their whisky matures. Many with great success. And why not? Tasmania boasts some of the cleanest air and purest water in world, the latter being an essential item for any successful vodka. Add some of the best brewing barley to the mix and it will become no surprise why 666 Vodka was concieved.

The spirit is created from 100% Tasmanian barley, triple distilled in copper pot stills, charcoal filtered to rid of any impurities, and finally cut down to 40% ABV with rainwater collected from Cape Grim.

    Absolut Vodka (700ml)
    Ahus, SWEDEN
    $54. 99
    Bottle
    $659.88 Dozen
    ABV: 38%

Everybody knows that the Russian and Polish national spirit, made from rye malt and often potato starch, is vodka. However, one of the most popular premium vodkas on todays market actually comes from Sweden, first appearing in 1979. Distilled from grain grown in the fields of Southern Sweden, Absolut was conceived as a pure product with its own peculiar Swedish identity. The distinctive bottle design was inspired by an antique medicine bottle, while the minimalist logo and absolutely clear glass emphasise the simplicity and purity of the product. The brands advertising has become as iconic as Coca-Cola's. Forty percent of imported vodka bought by Americans is Absolut of some variety. Still, the recent explosion of premium vodkas has resulted in something of a fragmented market and weakened Absolut's stranglehold. The conclusion most seem to be drawing is that Absolut is fine for mixing, but if you're drinking shots, there are many other superior choices.

To produce Absolut, an alcoholic base is made from locally grown grain, then continuously distilled to produce a high strength spirit. The spirit is then filtered and finally diluted with pure water before bottling.

Tasting note: [40% alc./vol. batch tasted] 'Very neutral on the nose with just a touch of cereal aroma and a hint of alcohol. Very good mouth feel, dryish in style but with some very light hints of caramelization. Just touches of needle from the alcohol. Sweetish but rather short on the finish. I maintain that this makes one of the finest vodka tonics in the world, perhaps because the mouth feel of the vodka lends a bit more weight to the mixture that other, lighter vodkas. Alternatively, put it in the freezer to drink ice-chilled when it becomes thick in texture, smooth, and very dry. - Desmond Begg, The Vodka Companion.

Other reviews… Aroma is vaguely grainy, fresh and pleasing in the initial sniffs; further aeration brings out a mildly oily scent. Palate entry is simple, fundamentally sound and intensely dry and grainy; by midpalate, a shy, kernel-like, bittersweet taste enters the picture, then fades quickly. Ends meek and ethereal.

    Classic Cocktail: The Bloody Mary

This is one of the few cocktails traditionally served in the morning, along with the Screwdriver. The name Bloody Mary is used to refer to the blood-like colour of the cocktail, but may have also been derived from “Bloody” Mary Tudor, Queen of England. The order of preparation can be crucial, and many bartenders guard secret recipes for the drink.

Fernand Petiot claims to have created the Bloody Mary as we know it today and describes in The New Yorker, 18 July 1964, the manner in which he made it: “George Jessel said he created it”, says Fernand, “but it was really nothing but vodka and tomato juice when I took it over. I cover the bottom of the shaker with four large dashes of salt, two dashes of black pepper, two dashes of cayenne pepper, and a layer of Worcestershire sauce; I then add a dash of lemon juice and some cracked ice, put in two ounces of vodka and two ounces of thick tomato juice, shake, strain, and pour. We serve a hundred to a hundred and fifty Bloody Marys a day here in the King Cole Room and in the other restaurants and the banquet rooms.”
Absolut Vodka have launched a flavoured vodka, “Absolut Peppar”, which works well as a base for this drink.

    60ml Vodka
a few dashes of worcestershire sauce
a few dashes of tabasco (to taste)
    salt
    lemon
    tomato juice
Method: Stir or shake the vodka with the sauces and the spices. Fill up with tomato juice in a highball glass with ice. Garnish with a celery stick, if you like it and want to add some vitamins. If you don't have any fresh celery at home add celery salt. - notes partially sourced from www.drinkboy.com

Belvedere Vodka from Polmos Zyrardow is crafted from 100% Polish rye, distilled four times and charcoal filtered. Easily recognised by its innovative packaging, the bottle depicts the Belvedere House, the Polish equivalent to the White House, the official residence of the Polish president in Warsaw. The question is does the impressive packaging match its quality? Reviews vacillate from average to very good. Desmond Begg in the 'The Vodka Companion' had this to say about it: 'Strong whiff of toffee on the nose. Sweet and cloying on the palate with strong caramelization. Some alcohol burn. Powerful finish in which toffee flavor predominates. This is an indifferently distilled vodka.'

...Belvedere Vodka is fairly aromatic with the spicy dark rye notes coming in. There's just a hint of lemon zest. The vodka has an average body and a touch of sweetness. It is clean and finish is peppery. No off flavors or aromas. Solid. 88 points - distiller.com

Belvedere Single Estate Rye Lake Bartezek Vodka (700ml)
    POLAND
    $94. 99
    Bottle
    $1139.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

A second vodka from Belvedere with a focus on 'terroir' is the Lake Bartezek Rye. Made from the same Dankowskie Diamond rye grain as the Smogory forest edition, but grown on a different Polish estate, according to the producers, the intention here is to highlight “The influence of the distinct soil, topography and climate... When sampled side by side, the two vodkas deliver two completely different taste profiles.” 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... One of two new bottles introduced to demonstrate the impact of terroir in vodka, this bottling is crisp, light and overall neutral on nose and palate. A vegetal hint on the palate leads into white pepper, ginger and lemon peel on the exhale. 92 points - Kara Newman - wineenthusiast.com

...Crafted from rye cultivated in northern Poland’s lake district, a region renowned for its crystal-clear glacial lakes, long and snowy winters… The rye in this region spends over 80 winter days buried in snow, conditions that add to its character and greatly impact the liquid’s flavor profile.” Initially pretty and approachable, here you’ll find a note of bread dough on the nose and a hint of the earthy, nutty terroir underneath a certain floral character. The vodka does develop a slight camphor note with time in glass, drowning out the more delicate aspects of the spirit over time. On the palate, the vodka is chewy and creamy, complex but soft, with notes of toasted brioche, a gentle lavender character, and a reprise of roasted nuts. Versatile and well crafted. - drinkhacker.com

Belvedere Single Estate Rye Smogory Forest Vodka (700ml)
    POLAND
    $94. 99
    Bottle
    $1139.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Launched in early 2017, Belvedere's Smogory Forest is crafted with rare Diamond Dankowskie rye from a single estate located in Smogóry, a tiny village in rural western Poland surrounded by vast forests. This bold, robust and savoury vodka captures the essence of its unspoiled region, while celebrating Belvedere’s ability to produce vodkas with a genuinely complex character. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... One of two new bottles introduced to demonstrate the impact of terroir in vodka, this bottling has a subtle lemon note in the fragrance, and a creamy vanilla palate that finishes with white and black pepper sparks. 92 points - Kara Newman - wineenthusiast.com

...On the nose, this rye-based vodka exhibits a hint of pepper, but is otherwise fairly neutral in aroma. It flavor, however, leans into that peppery spice and a bit of salinity. The flavor is full up front, but then fades out nicely, with a slight lasting tingle on the palate. Though it has a bit of spice to it, this vodka would make a lovely spirit forward cocktail like a Martini or Vesper, and would also be a option to drink neat or on the rocks for die-hard vodka fans. 92 points - distiller.com

Launched in 1992, this is one of Poland's super premium brands made exclusively from Stobrawa potatoes, mostly sourced from nearby the distillery to maximise freshness. The vodka is distilled four times following a six century old tradition. Founder and CEO, Tadeusz Dorda sums up the brand's philosophy: "We believe that the definition of vodka – “a flavorless, odorless, neutral spirit without distinctive character, aroma, taste or color” – is simply incorrect. We also reject the popular notion that all vodkas are the same. The flavor profile of our marquee product, Chopin Potato Vodka, is distinctively creamy with earthy notes and sets the standard in its category."

Master Distiller, Waldemar Durakiewicz, has worked with the Dorda family (who still own and run the company) since he graduated from university in 1978. Named after Poland's favourite son, the vodka is packaged in a frosted, cork-finished bottle which has since been copied by the likes of Belvedere Vodka and others.

The bittersweet palate entry taste flashes on cocoa bean and sap; at midpalate toasty, sooty flavors of tobacco leaf, wood smoke, wood resin and vanilla are found. Ends up semisweet, succulent and roughly spirity. 85-89 points - wineenthusiast.com

“Potato vodkas have never been as well-received as their grain-based competitors, but Chopin—which appeared on the American market in 1997—should go a long way toward changing their lowbrow reputation. It's the smoothest vodka we tried, with a slight oiliness (specific to potato vodkas) that cut beautifully against the briny funk of black caviar and held its own against the thickest black bread I'd been able to find. We found Chopin itself to be 'slightly sweet' and 'well-rounded' with 'perhaps a hint of apple.' Chopin also had a 'medium-length, pleasing burn,' but 'very little aftertaste—it's remarkably clean.' To top it off, Chopin's tall frosted bottle was the prettiest we'd seen...the panel unanimously called Chopin 'far and away the best vodka we tried.” – Alex Abramovich, “Hit me With Your Best Shot”, Slate Magazine, 2004.

    Ciroc Snap Frost Vodka (750ml)
    Gaillac, FRANCE
    $79. 99
    Bottle
    $959.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

An unusual vodka. Whereas most vodkas are produced from common starches such as wheat or potatoes, Ciroc is made from the Mauzac Blanc and Ugni Blanc grapes left on the vine for extended ripening. The fruit is sourced from Gaillac in the Southwest of France, (nestled between Roussillon and the Pyrenees in the South and the Gorges of the Tarn in the East). After harvesting, the juice is pressed, cold fermented then distilled five times - the fifth time using specially-designed, traditional copper pot-stills.

Tasting note: Crystal clear. The aroma is pronounced by vodka standards with a mixed peel / citrus focus that you’d anticipate from a gin. The citrus theme carries through to the palate which is fresh, medium dry and gently warming. Tails off nicely finishing clean, dry and mildly spicy with juicy grape and sweet citrus notes persisting. Think of a gin less the juniper - the possibilities are endless! 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Clear. Perfumed aromas of lemon creme and Key Lime pie. A soft, supple entry leads to a glycerous, sweetish medium-to full-bodied palate with creamy vanilla frosting, citrus pie, and mild peppery spice flavours. Finishes with a peppery baked citrus peel fade. More of a citrus flavoured vodka or eau-de-vie (which technically it is) in character, but nice.

Finish is delightfully sweet, polished and elegant. Rating: 90-95 - www.wineenthusiast.comsize>

    Crystal Head Vodka (700ml)
    Newfoundland, CANADA
    $99. 99
    Bottle
    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

A controversial archaeological mystery, 13 crystal heads have been found in regions around the world, from the American southwest to Tibet. They’re dated between 5,000 and 35,000 years old, and were supposedly polished into shape from solid quartz chunks over a period of several hundred years. Although according to Hewlett Packard engineers, they bear no tool marks to tell us exactly how they were made. The heads are thought to offer spiritual power and enlightenment to those who possess them, and as such stand not as symbols of death, but of life.

Enter Dan Aykroyd, well-known actor, musician, entrepreneur and spiritualist. He’s a believer in what he calls the "invisible world" where otherworldly presences are a "form of reality as valid as our normal reality." Partner and veteran fine artist John Alexander has exhibited extensively in the United States and around the world. Together, they were avid researchers of the legend of the 13 crystal heads. And from this inspiration, an idea was born.

Launched in 2008, Crystal Head Vodka was the fastest penetrating product to all 50 US states in history. The brand has been awarded OU Kosher certification.

Production starts with grains grown in the region of Chatham, Ontario. These grains are then processed and distilled four times to produce a neutral grain spirit at 95% ABV. The raw spirit is then reduced down to 40% alcohol by volume using water sourced from an aquifer in the Newfoundland, Canada countryside. This water seeps to the surface through a bed of porous rock which serves as a natural filter as it has done for many thousands of years.

The vodka is quadruple distilled, then triple charcoal filtered. Finally, every drop is filtered three times through 500-million year-old crystals know as Herkimer Diamonds. These quartz crystals are found in very few places in the world, including Herkimer, New York and regions in Tibet and Afghanistan. Perhaps because they share the raw material from which the original crystal heads were carved, they are thought to have similar spiritual qualities. The production process is carried out at one of the last government owned distilling facilities in the world – The Newfoundland and Labrador Liquor Corporation.

Not just a good story - Crystal Head Vodka was awarded a Double Gold medal at the prestigious San Francisco World Spirits Competition held in May 2011. More than 200 vodkas in total entered the competition; of this, Crystal Head Vodka was one of only a handful of brands to receive a Double Gold Medal in the entire competition.

    Finlandia Vodka (700ml)
    Helsinki, FINLAND
    $54. 99
    Bottle
    $659.88 Dozen
    ABV: 37.5%

Finlandia is produced using Finnish six-row barley. Distillation takes place at the state-of-the art distillery of Koskenkorva, Finland. The water used in its production is naturally filtered through glacial moraine and is considered so pure that it’s used straight without any chemical filtration.

The product was first launched in Scandinavia in 1970, and in the U.S. market one year later. Originally targeted towards the American consumer, it was later introduced into the world's key markets between 1977-1983. Since the 1990’s, Finlandia Vodka’s popularity has steadily grown and Finlandia is today available in over 100 countries making it one of the world’s leading premium vodkas.

No doubt Finlandia’s packaging has had some influence on the brands international success. Through its various incarnations, the Finlandia Vodka bottle has always conveyed the impression of an ice-cold drink from the frosty North, embodying the most desirable qualities of vodka: purity, clarity, icy chill and refreshment. The original label featured two white reindeer sparring against the midnight sun low on the horizon. Finlandia’s original visual identity was slightly adjusted in 1983. The twist cap colour was changed from red to blue, and a light blue tint was added to the glass to increase the perception of clarity and purity. The bottle also became slightly more broad-shouldered and the label colour altered from the original black to navy blue. From 1990 onwards, the reindeer relations were changed: three reindeers trotting ahead in unison, creating the sense of dynamic movement. The new, now familiar Finlandia Vodka bottle was first launched in 1998. The bottle is minimalist in style, slenderized and modern. The paper label has been dropped and replaced with lacquered text with the closure now being a stylish silver toned cap.

Tasting note: Clear, colourless appearance. Mild stone fruit nose. Smooth and supple on the palate with a light-to medium-body and mellow grain and fruit notes. Finishes very smoothly with just a hint of alcohol and peppery fruit. A well made, extremely easy to drink style of vodka. 37.5% Alc./Vol.

Idle Hour Unfiltered Rye Vodka (700ml)
    Queensland, AUSTRALIA
    $69. 99
    Bottle
    $839.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%
Ingrained into the very nature of vodka is a conundrum that has created the need for big vodka brands to constantly reinforce image and promotion: As most vodkas are inherently light on aroma and flavour (differentials which distinguish other spirits like whiskies, gins or rums for example), there is simply little else to sell on other than the origin of the base ingredients and the vodka's 'purity'. This may well be why many drinkers feel that the only real way of differentiating between brands is by alcohol content and price. Here is a vodka brand that takes another direction. Rather than aiming at neutrality, rye based vodkas tend to be flavoursome, peppery and fresh with the grain contributing an oiliness to the finish. European brands like Belvedere, Chopin and Wyborowa have been market leaders. Now a Brisbane based venture is making rye vodkas from locally sourced ingredients. There are two versions. This one is non-filtered, meaning extra mouthfeel is retained. Launched in late 2020, it's described as a full-bodied alternative for those who enjoy vodka with flavour: "Spicy with a light, chocolatey essence", enjoy it neat or on the rocks. 40% Alc./Vol.
    Idle Hour Rye Vodka (700ml)
    Queensland, AUSTRALIA
    $69. 99
    Bottle
    $839.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Rather than aiming at neutrality, rye based vodkas tend to be flavoursome. This version is crafted from local grain and then charcoal filtered, a process that removes impurities with each cycle. It's crisper and fresher than Idle Hour's non filtered version. Use it in a Martini, Moscow mule or mix with soda and lime. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... "A Brisbane distillery is leading the vodka resurgence globally with the launch of Idle Hour, an Australian rye vodka. With spiced flavour and a creamy body and bolstered with hints of pepper, this spirit goes well on the rocks or as a key ingredient in a cocktail. It has zero additives and is gluten free. It is meant to be savoured and enjoyed, not just tasted and never disguised." - FoodMag.com.au

    Schiedam, NETHERLANDS
    $64. 99
    Bottle
    $779.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

For ten generations, the Nolet family in Holland has been distilling the finest hand made spirits using techniques and recipes perfected by Joannes Nolet and his successors since 1691. Ketel One, named after the original distilling kettle number one is hand crafted in traditional pot stills, filtered through charcoal and rested underground in tile-lined tanks until perfect. Only the heart of the distillate, the center of each batch, is considered fine enough to be called Ketel One. The first 100 gallons, and the last, are separated and discarded as being either too harsh or too weak.

Tasting note: Clear. Nail polish and citrus peel aromas. A round smooth entry leads to a dryish medium body with dried fruitiness/seediness. Sweet dough, citrus peel, and white pepper fade becomes drying and powdery on the finish. A little hot and vapory. 40%Alc./Vol.

Classy, complex and multilayered.  90-95 points. - www.wineenthusiast.com

    POLAND
    $54. 99
    Bottle
    $659.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%
The recipe is from south east Poland where honey liqueurs have been long established traditional drinks with roots back to the 1300's. Medos is often drunk hot, however at normal temperatures it makes a fine accompaniment to a range of deserts or cakes. In warmer weather Medos can be enjoyed on the rocks.

The palate offers moderately concentrated flavours with a delicate honey, vanilla combo and a warming spirit. Finish is clean, drier and pleasantly spicy. 40%alc./vol

It was not until the 17th century that vodka was established as Poland’s national drink. In this period of time, the Polish also started exporting their production to Northern European countries like Russia. By the 18th century, their techniques had advanced resulting in such practices as triple distillation.

The Metropolis bottle depicts Zygmunt’s column: symbol of the Royal power in the independent Poland. It portrays King Zygmunt III from the Wasa Dynasty (1556-1632) with sword and cross representing him as protector of the country and its religion.

This extraordinarily strong spirit needs to be treated with respect. It is questionable whether the human body is meant to digest such strong substances. Being effectively pure ethyl-alcohol, it is more commonly used in cooking, in the preparation of fruit and herb tinctures, for medicinal purposes or by home perfume makers. One customer recommends it above all else as therapy for arthritic pain, and has been massaging his joints with it for years!

At any rate, the premium price of this Pure Spirit goes some way to ensure it is used sparingly and thoughtfully. Drink diluted & chilled it traditionally makes a fine accompaniment to fish dishes.

Choosing the right vodka when you buy online.

There's rye, corn, potato, wheat and grape-based vodkas as well as a selection of luxury lines and flavoured expressions. But the price of a vodka doesn't necessarily reflect its quality, which ultimately lies in the type of raw materials used, the method and care taken during distillation and the quality and technique of filtering. Marketing costs often exceed production costs many times over, so that less expensive brands that bypass extravagant presentation can offer excellent value. At the same time, cheap mass produced brands might be passable in heavily mixed drinks, but make for mediocre Martinis.

Isn't all vodka much the same?

Most vodkas are inherently light on aroma and flavour (differentials which distinguish other spirits like whiskies, gins or rums for example), so ingrained into the very nature of vodka is a conundrum that's created the need for big brands to constantly reinforce image. However, clearly all vodkas don't taste alike, otherwise there'd be no reason to favour a $70 bottle over a $25 bottle. Each brand has a unique, though subtle, aroma, taste and burn. Look for some of the more common aromas and flavours like wheat, dough, pastry, cream, vanilla, talc, mineral water, icing sugar, marsh mellow, confectionary, citrus, dried fruits, spice and pepper to name a few. Charcoal filtration can add a mildly sweet, sooty quality. Quartz filtration can lend a minerality to the spirit. Add mouthfeel to the equation and you'll begin to appreciate the subtle differences that define vodka brands.

Whether it's for making Martinis, Bloody Marys or a myriad of other cocktails, quality vodka remains a bar essential.
