    Closure: Cork

1800 is a 100% Agave Tequila. To understand how this distinguishes it from other Tequila, it is necessary to know something of the process in which tequila is produced.Although Mexico is famed as the land of the cactus, Tequila is in fact distilled from the fermented juice of the Agave Plant, (not a cactus) otherwise known as the ‘Century plant.’ The Agave plant resembles an unripe, oversized pineapple or spiked cactus which shoots a giant blossom that can take up to twelve years to produce. At maturity, it stands about 5 feet high, is bluish green in colour and has a heart or ‘pina’ . It is these hearts which are actually used in the distillation process, the sweet juice extracted by compression, steaming and washing prior to fermentation & distillation.

The fermentation stage determines whether the final product will be 100 percent agave or mixed ("mixto"). The highest-quality Tequila is made using only fermented agave juice mixed with some water. Mixto however, is made by fermenting and then distilling a mix of agave juice and other sugars, usually cane sugar with water. Mixtos made and bottled in Mexico can contain up to 40% alcohol derived from other sugars. Mixtos that have been shipped in bulk for bottling overseas may have the agave content further reduced to 51% by the foreign bottler. Mexican law states that all 100% agave or aged Tequila must be bottled in Mexico. 100 percent agave Tequilas are clearly labelled as such. Anything else is classified as a Mixto Tequila, however the term is seldom used on bottle labels.

1800 is today the number one selling super premium tequila in America. Rested in French oak casks to create a distinctive smoothness, it boasts an exceptional mellowness, making it the ultimate shot and the essence of the ultimate margarita.

Tasting note: Gold colour with a copper hue. Moderately full-bodied. The nose displays a wonderful combination of herbaceous agave, apples, figs and mellow oak. Bold, round mouth feel. The palate is smooth, slightly sweet with powerful spirit - though in balance - followed by a pungent backdrop of earth, spice and oak. Very warm spirit power wave finishing rich and spicy. A tequila to be enjoyed in the traditional fashion: shot glass, salt and lime. 38% alc./vol.

Other reviews... The initial aroma is of black pepper and steamed broccoli. Following aeration, a bouquet of succulent scents of Brazil nuts, egg cream and light oak resin appear. An oily flavor of bacon is apparent at palate entry; at midpalate the pepper returns with added tastes of spinach, sage and butter. Finishes elegantly yet zestily as the pepper comes to the fore. In May 2021, the famous model, Kendall Jenner announced the launch of her 818 Tequila range via an Instagram post. She became the latest celebrity to launch a spirits brand, joining the likes of George Clooney and Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson. Like most tequila brands, the range includes three variants; a Blanco, Reposado and a top-of-the-line Anejo, all bottled at 40%. They're produced in a traditional manner under contract at La Cofradia distillery in Jalisco, home to over sixty tequila labels. Jenner's foray has been polarising, both in terms of the liquid in the bottles and accusations that her wealth means she's diverting attention and resources from smaller producers who lack her pull. The tequila itself is produced from Blue Weber agaves harvested at peak maturity (seven years) then cooked in brick ovens for 40 hours, before being subjected to the tahona extraction method - a large stone wheel that crushes the agave. Taste-wise, the consensus is these are light, approachable styles that don't make heavy demands on drinker's palates.

Other reviews... Aged a minimum of two months in American and French oak barrels. Again quite sweet on the nose, but with a clear chocolate note that adds a bit more nuance to the vanilla bomb of the blanco. That cocoa character continues to the palate, which layers in some cinnamon notes to provide a Mexican chocolate feel, though again it feels heavily dosed with heaping spoonsful of brown sugar. The finish is as sweet or sweeter than the blanco, though at least the cocoa-dusted barrel influence evokes something a little more exciting and off the beaten path. - drinkhacker.com

Calle 23 is the brainchild of French Bio-chemist Sophie Decobecq. Her expertise in her studied field has lead her to experiment with various yeast strains, in turn creating a range of distinguishable tequilas. Agave is grown and produced in Zapotlanejo, the highlands of Jalisco where they are slowly cooked in stainless steel autoclaves for a period 7 hours. The cooked agave is then distilled in stainless steel pot stills to approximately 54%. Reposado and Anejo styles are aged for 8 and 16 months respectively in Jack Daniels and Heaven Hill ex-bourbon casks until being bottled with distillery well water. The Reposado sports a very pale straw colour. Sweet, softly spicy aromatics include green peppercorns, sliced capsicum and sweet smoke combined with candle wax and oily, faintly sappy notes. A hint of eucalypt leaf? Entry is soft, medium bodied and with a slightly oily texture offering green capsicum, green tomato and chilli flavours with a salty, lip smacking tang. Long, dry, gently warming white pepper aftertaste. A soft, easy going Reposado. Try it with green tomato salsa seasoned with lime juice. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Golden silver color. Aromas of peppercorns and honey nut pastry. Soft and supple with a dry-yet-fruity medium body. Peppery spice, anise, jicama, and talc notes glide on the long, warming finish. International Review of Spirits Award: Gold Medal, 91 points (Exceptional)

    El Jimador Reposado Tequila (700ml)
    Jalisco, MEXICO
    $59. 99
    Bottle
    $719.88 Dozen
    ABV: 38%

Launched in 1994 and named after the men who hand harvest agaves with a razor sharp coa, the Jimador brand is a sister offering to Herradura. The hugely popular Reposado represents 70% of production and is aged for two months in white oak barrels. While it started life as a 100% agave tequila, it was reduced to a mixto during the 1999/2000 agave crisis but in 2009, El Jimador reclaimed its all-agave status. Famously smooth with notes of cooked agave, vanilla and light caramel sweetness, the producers recommend it with grapefruit soda, lime juice and a hint of salt in a highball glass. 38% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Complex aromas of wet earth, vanilla, jalapeño and campfire ash entice the nose. The palate opens with vanilla, transitioning to a peppery midpalate and finishing long, with delicate violet, coconut, black pepper and cinnamon notes. 93 points - wineenthusiast.com

"Notes of cooked agave, light oak and vanilla are joined by a slight hint of baked cherry pie on the nose. On the palate, this medium-bodied tequila coats the tongue with pleasant vanilla and caramel flavors complemented by more fruit notes, especially cherry and strawberry. Light oak and cinnamon notes and a touch of earthiness add to the complex flavor profile. It presents a medium length finish, with alcohol, white pepper and agave appearing initially before a quick hint of agave nectar and cherry finish things off." 92 points - distiller.com

...Golden straw color. Aromas and flavors of roasted nuts and peppers in wax paper, chocolate citrus peels, epazote-pepper relish, and geranium with a supple, bright, dryish light-to-medium body and a warming, breezy finish evoking accents of herb-bark tincture, pickled chiles, and vanilla almond milk. The 'El Tequilano' label was launched in 1959 by Jorge Salles Cuervo, a member of the family now most famous as a Tequila brand. Nowadays the company owns agaves in the Jalisco Highlands, near the towns of Atotonilco and Tototlan. Self proclaimed as one of Tequila's 'best kept secrets', the style is described as semi-modern, made using autoclaves and roller mills, but with ferments in open cement tanks. The producers claim wild yeasts from the mango trees surrounding the distillery add additional character to the ferment.

Aged for three months in oak, El Tequilano's Reposado offers relatively low-definition aromatics suggesting peppercorns and dried grass. It's reflected on the palate which is light bodied, with a water-like entry and a dry, pure, low-key profile of white pepper and green olive flavours. The finish adds a delicate flourish of spice. 38% Alc./Vol.

Very pale straw / gold colour. A light silky entry builds to a moderately concentrated profile that’s subtly smokey with suggestions of baked citrus and green peppercorns. Slightly oily. Finishes short and rather nondescript with a faint beeswax aftertaste. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Golden yellow color. Mellow aromas of honeycomb, citrus meringue, and delicate pickling and baking spices. Super smooth and satiny with a dry-yet-fruity medium-to-full body. Elegant and floral on the finish with anise, bee pollen, and pepper accents. Superbly crafted.

Tequila Fortaleza (meaning “Fortitude”) is the same Tequila released under the “Los Abuelos” label, produced at the distillery of the same name - “Fortaleza” is the export label that developed due to a trademark conflict with a Rum with the name "Abuelos" that was already being distributed in the USA.

Located in the town of Tequila, Jalisco, Los Abuelos are a quality orientated producer rooted in traditions established centuries ago. Their tequilas are produced from estate grown, 100% stone milled agave. A brick oven with meter thick walls cooks the agave for thirty six hours. The crushed agave is then washed with mountain water from the Volcan de Tequila to separate the pulp from the woody fibres to create the 'mosto'. The woody fibres of the agave are removed at this time, and taken to the fields to use as compost. The agave mosto is then naturally fermented for five days in small wood vats, and then double distilled using small, labor-intensive copper pot stills.

The distinctive bottles are hand-blown in Tonala, Jalisco by artisan glassmakers and the bottle tops, artisan designed and hand made. They represent the harvested heart of the agave.

Tasting note: Pale gold with a faint pale green blush. Soft and subdued aroma offers a beeswax opening note followed by hints of crushed eucalypt adding freshness. It takes at least two to three minutes before more substantial notes of grilled capsicum, wet cedar and toasted pine nuts are released. Further exposure really builds the aroma big time as beeswax, menthol and vanillan oak enter the picture. A water like entry builds into a concentrated, mid-weight profile featuring butter menthol lozenge, beeswax and a peppery burst. Finish is clean, dry and perfectly balanced with gentle spices persisting. Aftertaste is prolonged with butter menthol lozenge, beeswax, and hints of vanilla followed by a fresh and delicately peppery fade. Great stuff. 40% Alc./Vol.

Although 'KAH' means "Life" in Mayan, the striking packaging for these tequilas is inspired by a 3000 year old Mexican celebration known as the Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos). A death/rebirth festival, it honors deceased loved ones. The bottles containing KAH tequila reference traditional Calaveras (skulls made from sugar) used in Dia de los Muertos rituals of centuries gone by. Like Northern European 'vanitas' paintings, the symbolism reminds one of mortality, and doing so encourages us to celebrate life (with KAH Tequila in-hand, of course!) But while the brand has attracted a lot of attention for its Day of the Dead presentation, what's the tequila itself like? Thankfully the gimmick is only skin deep. Reviews have been favourable. We look forward to tasting these tequilas soon!

Premium Tequila scoop buy. Get ready for Spring / Summer Margaritas.

‘La Gritona’ is Spanish for ‘The Screamer’ - an appropriate name seeing that one of the people behind this outstanding tequila is LA-based punk guitarist Andy Coronado. The other significant player is the renowned tequilero Melly Cárdenas, who fashions La Gritona at her small distillery in Valle de Guadalupe in the highlands of Jalisco. One of Mexico’s few female master distillers, the fiercely independent Cárdenas—who has 20 years of quality tequila production under her belt—shares Coronado’s love of the exceptional and unconventional, and leads a team staffed by only local women.

In a market dominated by major companies like Herradura, Patrón and Fortaleza, the duo set out to create a rocking, pared-down Reposado that would stand out by staying true to the region’s heritage. For a Reposado, La Gritona is light on colour and sweetness—Coronado and Cárdenas want none of the flavours that mask many commercial Reposados like vanilla, chocolate and dulce de leche. Instead this is packed with delicious, honest and savoury, roasted agave flavor, reminiscent of the old-style ‘rested’ tequila, before the mass market took hold: “It’s tequila like our grandparents drank,” says Cárdenas.

Working with 9- to 10-year-old, mature Blue Weber agave grown in the iron-rich red soil of the Jalisco highlands, every step of production after harvest takes place under Cárdenas’ own roof and with an attention to detail that the big boys, or those outsourcing distillation, cannot hope to replicate. The agave is steam-cooked in a single, thick-walled earthen oven for 24 hours and then allowed to rest for another 24 hours before crushing. The collected liquid is naturally fermented (no additives are used to push things along) in open steel vats at a rate dictated by the ambient air temperature and the wild yeasts, usually lasting between six to nine days. The double distillation takes place in small steel stills. Those bespoke bottles by the way are made from recycled Mexican glass, hand-blown just an hour’s drive from the distillery. Coronado uses any recycled clear glass he can find (mostly old Coke bottles) then chips in a few Dos Equis bottles for the green tint!

The distilled blanco is then rested in reused American whiskey barrels for eight months before bottling. These low-impact second- or third-fill barrels are given only the lightest char which allows for the refreshing, sappy notes of the agave to shine through, resulting in a tequila that sips and mixes perfectly in equal measure - it’s crisp, clean and elegant and kills it in a Tommy’s Margarita. Tasted uncut, the bouquet offers stunningly pure and keenly fresh scents of brine, dill pickles, capsicum, black pepper and pine sap; Five minutes stirs up sweeter scents of grilled pineapple, vanilla and coconut butter. The silky, medium bodied delivery is gently sweet and wonderfully elegant; Capsicum, green pine and white pepper feature while sappy agave flavours finish the profile with admirable balance. Seamless from start to finish, this stands out from Reposado pack. Highest recommendation. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Look for a pale straw hue and fruity/funky aromas. The palate offers distinct tropical fruit notes, opening with lychee and a faint floral hint, plus a faint waft of ripe-banana funk midpalate. The finish is long and drying, showing grapefruit peel and pink peppercorn. Sip or mix into Palomas. 95 points — wineenthusiast.com

    $1679.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Mijenta‘s second expression is aged for up to six months in a blend of American white oak, French oak, and French acacia wood casks. The result is a very fine, delicate, feminine Reposado with a gentle delivery and medium dry peppery-agave flavours, capped off by a delicious butterscotch finish. Sleek, soft and eminently drinkable, the profile here evokes lighter styled Highland malts. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... soft and approachable...offers a solid balance between the freshness of agave and the sweetness driven by the barrel. Lightly peppery on the nose, the tequila features fresh herbs, a pinch of spice, and a mild, indistinct fruitiness that runs to apricot and lemon. The palate spins the equation around, offering a honeyed peach and citrus note up front, filtered through gentle caramel and vanilla notes. There’s a punch of barrel char on the finish, but again this element is mild and well-integrated with the livelier, fruity attack. Less unusual than the expressive and wild blanco, this reposado bottling sticks a bit closer to the expected flavor profile — despite its unusual barrel treatment. The price may be a bit dear, but the experience is fully worth the investment. - drinkhacker.com

..."Barrels used here definitely have influenced the tequila with added barrel spices, but it's more like a 3 on a scale of 10 -- not overpowering, but present. There's also a touch of tropical fruits, cashews, and milk chocolate enhancing the flavors of herbaceous agave. It has both a sweetness and a savoriness in equal measure. It's one that makes you go back to it to see what else you can find. Definitely not the same old sweet vanilla notes that you see in most aged tequilas which is a win in my book." 92 points - distiller.com

The result looks like a Blanco but tastes and smells like a Reposado; Subdued agave mingles with dusty oak on the nose, following through in a light bodied, silky delivery with waxy agave flavours, low key spices, zero burn and a brisk finish. Don't go looking for punch or complexity. This is very understated. 40% Alc./Vol

Tromba takes its name from the local ‘big rain’ which arrives in the region every spring. These rains provide the nourishment rumored to yield some of the finest agave in Mexico. Created by veteran distiller Marco Cedano, Tromba Reposado is aged in white oak barrels for a 6 month period prior to bottling.

Tasting notes: Brilliant bright gold blush. Generous aromas include scents of tomato vine, crushed chile then more beeswax and white pepper after brief exposure. A soft, creamy entry leads into a plush, gently spicy reposado profile offering medium dry, slightly muted flavours of grilled pineapple, capsicum and wax. Suggestions of cough lozenge and menthol in the fade. Fresh and well poised. 40% Alc./Vol.

If you're into Tequila, you'll already know that the NOM (or distiller registration number) is the only real way to determine which disitllery produced your tequila. Generally speaking, Tequila brands, as opposed to producers, select a single distillery to work with and they use that brand’s NOM on their bottles. But this is not always the case. And with more than 500 brands produced by about 70 distillers, the brand name is not a reliable indication of who made the product. Knowing the NOM is an absolute necessity if you're keen on ensuring the provenence (and quality) of your purchase. As one of the only companies to offer tequila from several distilleries under a single brand, the ArteNOM venture emphasises this Mexican convention in marketing their tequila, labelling their limited releases as "Seleccion de 1445", for example. The numbers will change from batch to batch depending on the source.

This bottling, from Arandas (elev. 5,400′), is made by Feliciano Vivanco who has been cultivating highland agave since Mexico’s tumultuous post-revolutionary period of 1919-1929. The family now holds 2,000 acres of estate-grown agave producing a rich, well-balanced spirit.

Other reviews... Pale brassy straw color. Attractive aromas of spicy poached pineapple, flan, pepper, and dried flowers with a silky, dry-yet-fruity medium-to-body and a highly polished, praline, spice dust, cedar, and mineral. Very nicely integrated flavors and a lovely wood accented finish. 40% Alc./Vol.

Many tequila chasers consider the Reposado to be the high point of the Casa Noble collection. The tequila is aged for one year in French oak barrels.

Tasting note: Pale gold. Softer and deeper on the nose than the "Crystal", this offers sultry wafts of muted butterscotch, vanilla, pineapple pudding, musk and distant piney/menthol freshness. Super pure with melt-in-your mouth texture and medium dry flavours of butter menthol lozenge, grassy / tingling pepper / pine-like notes and a creamy vanilla, mocha and dried pineapple cascade. Deftly controlled sweet-dry balance and an almost ethereal lightness. Very pure, very elegant reposado. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews.... Pale golden color. Roasted pecan, coffee, creme Anglaise, toffee, and brown spice aromas are attractive. A silky, supple entry leads to a slick, dryish medium body of praline, leather, mocha, chocolate covered figs and dates, sandalwood, and spice. Finishes with a toffee and toasty oak fade. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews...'Matured in French oak for a full year; the light amber/yellow shade is really gorgeous and pure; the nose is seductive and compelling right from the first nosing pass after the pour as mature scents of brine, forest herbs, and lead pencil enchant the olfactory sense the second sniffing features more of the herbs and pepperiness than the lead pencil with further exposure to air, the third whiff offers deepening yet graceful aromas of soft caramel, mild oak, herbal agave, and sea salt (I especially like the bouquet at this stage of 5-7 minutes of aeration) with further time in the glass, the final sniffing sees the dill/brine element come to the forefront a genuinely elegant and top-of-the-category bouquet; the intensely sweet taste at palate entry is more vegetal than oaky or caramelly the midpalate stage is laden with sweet light toffee and candied nut flavors, which while tasty, don't necessarily match-up to the elegance of the aroma; the finish is long, toasty/caramelly, and resiny from the oak; highly recommended, but could have gone even further in the ratings department had the taste phase equaled the superb quality found in the bouquet.'

Tasting note: Deep bright gold. Entry is likewise impeccably pure in its beeswax and raisin toast mid palate and distinctive cinnamon, nutmeg, pepper-like finish rounding off what is a deliciously different reposado experience. 40% Alc./Vol.

Produced from estate-grown 8-10 year old 100% blue agaves and double distilled.

Tasting note: Pale straw gold colour is wine-like in the glass. Greets the nose with attractive scents of pencil shaving, green olive and candle wax. Several minutes later finds peppercorn and dill pickle in the mix. Excellent purity. Entry offers dilute brine and green olive flavours, building momentum as the peppers double by mid palate which turns grassy / vegetal / resiny and is almost overwhelmed by the salt and pepper surge. Solid length. Spiced up reposado but in a good way. 40% Alc./Vol.

Just arrived in Australia is this limited production Fortaleza matured in three different casks. The distillery team started with the brand’s still strength double copper pot distilled blanco, then aged it in French & American oak barrels, as well as beer casks. According to Fortaleza, the used beer barrels brought a slightly sour, cider-like aroma and effervescent quality to the texture. The French oak liquid resulted in heavier aromas of vanilla and white chocolate, while the standard x Bourbon barrels added slight wood and vanilla notes while letting the cooked agave character shine. 7050 bottles (at close to still strength) are on offer worldwide. 46% Alc./Vol.

Bottled by McCormick Distilling in Missouri, U.S.A, Hussong’s Tequila found notoriety (in its early form) by being one of the first to proudly state a “99% agave” content on the front label as a means to bypass Mexican regulations which require all 100% agave Tequila be bottled in Mexico.

A shift in consumer trends saw the company later market a 100% agave Tequila, moving all bottling to Mexico (the bottle was clearly marked “100% Agave” and is a rare find should you come across it). This bottling gained instant notoriety amongst Tequila fans, with its distinct, blue stoneware jug, however was short lived due to the inevitable increase in costs.

Current Hussong’s stock is a Reposado mixto (51% Blue Agave, and the remaining 49% from other sugars, typically cane). Not one for the hard-core Tequila fans, but a versatile option worth exploring considering past form.

Milagro, which means ‘miracle’ in Spanish, was founded in 1997 by two Mexican entrepreneurs who successfully built the brand in their native country and the USA (the two largest Tequila markets). Famed whisky producer, William Grant & Sons has recently acquired a 51% stake in the company.

Agaves are harvested about 8 to 12 years after planting, and the juice is extracted from the heart of the plant by roasting in clay ovens made from the estate’s volcanic soil. The fermented juice is triple distilled in small batches.

Other reviews... Initial aroma of wax paper and black pepper; aeration stimulates scents of asparagus, broccoli, new leather and herbal butter. The palate entry is spicy and semisweet; the midpalate adds subtle tastes of butter, steamed green vegetables, white rice and light toffee. Finishes satiny smooth and appealingly spicy. A tour de force in balance and harmony.

"Roca" is Patron's new premium selection, named after the Spanish word for “rock” (roca), "...a reference to the giant volcanic-stone wheel traditionally used to crush the cooked agave." A two-ton volcanic stone tahona is used at Patron. The reposado is distilled in small batches & aged in used bourbon barrels. .

Tapatio 100% Agave Reposado Tequila (1000ml)
    Jalisco, MEXICO

'Spirits chasers' who are always after the latest and greatest releases as well as the more esoteric, would almost be disappointed to know that Tapatio has been floating around Mexican bars for about 75 years and thus, already enjoys a strong following in its country of origin. Outside of Mexico is another story. Until recently, the brand was not even obtainable north of the Mexican border, at least not by legal channels (it debuted in the US only this year.)

The family owned distillery behind the brand, "La Altena", preferenced the promotion of another of their Tequilas,"El Tesoro" for overseas markets, but thankfully Carlos Camarena , La Altena's chief distiller, finally succumbed to the pressure to release the Tapatio tequilas to faithfuls around the world. Some of these were no doubt introduced to its charms on a Mexican bender from Juarez to Tapachula. Many others probably fell in love with the drink from a single shot and became instant converts.

The long awaited arrival of Tapatio Tequilas in Australia is a welcome one, as from a production point of view, this is as traditional as you will get : 100% estate grown agave, brick ovens, wooden vats and copper stills make La Altena one of the last bastions of old school tequila production, resulting in a drink of character rather than a mass produced commodity tailored for the 'senoritas in sombreros' segment - even though some would say there is nothing wrong with that, we know where we stand when we're looking for a true Mexican delight!

Tapatio Reposado is aged for around 4 months (minimum requirements stipulate 2 months) in oak barrels to bring in a hint of sweetness from the wood, without overpowering the spicy agave flavour.

Tasting note: Very pale straw gold appearance. Fairly restrained on the nose with a soft, seamlessly integrated amalgam of vanilla, green tomato and chile peppers followed by traces of mint. A soft light entry expands to reveal a light to medium bodied reposado with a slightly oily texture and restrained vanilla / agave and pepper flavours intensifying towards a deliciously salty finish. Concludes fresh and delicate with a subtle waxy green tomato fade. Elegant and understated. 38% Alc./Vol.
