Other Brandy & Eau de Vie

Many think of France and Cognac exclusively when it comes to brandy, however any country that produces wine (or fruit) typically makes brandy too. The genre has as many permutations as any spirits category, starting with classic wood aged expressions from the French regions of Calvados and Armagnac as well traditional European fruit eaux de vies, fine Italian grappas, Slivovitz, Arak, Marc and high end Spanish and Australian brandies - not to forget exotic unaged Piscos from South America. Everything brandy you'll find right here.

Chilean Pisco is a distillate mainly of grapes from the Moscatel family, which are grown primarily in the semi-arid "little North" zone of Chile. Chile claims Pisco as its own, protecting its quality through strict adherence to regulations which permit production and processing only in the administrative regions of Coquimbo and Atacama.

Alto del Carmen is produced just outside of Vicuna in the beautiful Elqui Valley. Tucked away in the high altitudes of the Andes, the wine-growing region is renowned for its Muscat grapes. This example is double distilled in small batches, predominantly from Muscat, however Pedro-Ximenez and Torontel grapes may also make the grade. Aged at least six months in American oak barrels, then triple filtered and bottled at 80 proof, expect fresh grape aromas and a satiny textured brandy that's also pleasantly warming. 40% Alc./Vol.

    Antinori Tignanello Grappa (500ml)
    Tuscany, ITALY
    $110. 00
    Bottle
    $1320.00 Dozen
    ABV: 42%

Tignanello is a famous Italian red table wine produced from a blend of 80% Sangiovese, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc. It broke new ground in Tuscany during the mid 1970’s and early 1980’s being first Sangiovese to be aged in barriques, the first modern styled red wine blended with non-traditional varieties like Cabernet, and one of the first red wines in Chianti not to use white grapes. Tignanello's grappa is produced from the pomace of its namesake.

Tasting note: Clear, brilliant silvery appearance. Perfumed aromas are waxy (candlewax, crayons), then spicy, fruity notes emerge, in particular raisin and plum. Becomes more bread and pastry like with aeration. A soft light entry builds into a mouthfilling, spicy profile that’s medium to full bodied, dryish, with spicy dried fruits (especially plum). Finishes dry, light and oily. Aftertaste of sultana followed by a faint cocoa fade. 42% Alc./Vol.

Ararat Vaspurakan 15 Year Old Brandy (700ml)
    ARMENIA

    $1800.00 Dozen
    ABV: 40%
At the Yalta conference at the end of the Second World War, Winston Churchill was so impressed with an Armenian brandy given to him by Stalin, that he asked for 400 bottles of it to be sent to him each year. Churchill was not the only one to enthuse about this jewel of the Caucasus. Agatha Christie and Frank Sinatra were also fans. It impressed the French so much during a blind tasting, they bestowed it with the Gran-prix award at the International Exhibition in Paris in 1900, and even permitted the company to call the product “Cognac” instead of brandy - a designation that's otherwise jealously guarded.

The accolade was all the more significant when one considers that Brandy production in Armenia covers a fraction of Cognac's history.
It began in 1887, when the Yerevan Brandy Company (YBC) was founded by a merchant, Nerses Tairyan, with the help of his cousin Vasily Tayrov. They began distilling using classical French equipment at a winery they'd founded earlier inside the former fortress of Yerevan. In 1899, a Russian company, “N.L. Shustov and Sons”, a well-known vodka and liqueur producer purchased YBC.Their brandy soon became the preferred beverage at the Russian Imperial Court.

Since then, just like the legendary Mount Ararat, the local specialty has become a symbol of national pride. Indeed, in a country with few natural resources and less than three million people with a per capita incomes around $600 a year, any success seems magnified.

After the Soviet system was established in Armenia, the YBC was nationalised and entered a new stage of development. Production expanded considerably. More recently, in 1999, the company became a part of the French drinks conglomerate, Pernod Ricard. It was a move that wasn't at first welcomed by the locals, but when they realised Pernod were in for the long haul, attitudes soon became more accepting. Foreign investment has been scarce in the country. Pernod Ricard's rare success has been cause to celebrate.

Armenian brandy remains a product made from Armenian varietals following a regulated production method. Only local grape varieties are used based on the unique microclimate of the Ararat Valley. These include special endemic varietals that are no longer planted outside of Armenia (survivors of the phylloxera epidemics). In all, there are about 13 such varieties, with the main ones being Voskehat, Garan Dmak and Kangun. Once harvested, the grapes are loaded in special horizontal screw presses where berries are pressed in a very gentle way to avoid causing damage to seeds. Different varieties do not get mixed.

Double steam distillation preserves the flavour and aroma of the grapes, while the ageing of the brandies is done exclusively in oak barrels. In 2002 the factory rebuilt its own cooperage. The local Armenian oak species which is used has a rather tight grain and is virtually devoid of pores. The trees are at least 70 years old when they're harvested, and only the middle part of the tree is used. The oak imparts its natural flavours and aromas of dried fruits, spices, vanilla and chocolate. Filtered spring water from the Katnakhpiur source is used during blending. Just prior to bottling the brandy is chilled and then filtered twice.

YBC possesses approximately 90% of the total reserve of genuine brandy in Armenia. Several YBC brands are inaccessible to the retail network and can only be obtained at factory's shop: "Erebuni" - 25 years, "Kilikia" - 30 years, "Sparapet" - 40 years and "Noah's Ark" - 70 years of ageing in wooden casks.

We're pleased to announce the arrival of these world class brandies into Australia.

The 15 Year old is labelled ''Vaspurakan'' (Armenian for “noble country") . It refers to one of the historical sovereign principalities of Greater Armenia in the 9th century that owed its prosperity to the ruling Artsruni dynasty. In ancient times Vaspurakan was considered the Promised Land and a paradise on earth. The Vaspurakan princes were among the greatest architects of their time: in a very short time, they built 10 cities, thousands of castles, citadels and churches.

Asbach Original 3 Year Old Brandy (700ml)
    GERMANY
    $77. 99
    Bottle
    $935.88 Dozen
    ABV: 38%

Asbach’s history goes back to the year 1892, when company founder Hugo Asbachleft his adopted home country, France, to establish his own distillery in Rüdesheim on the Rhein in Germany. He had previously acquired a high degree of know-how in distilling wines from renowned French brandy producers, and he made use of this knowledge to achieve an ambitious goal: To create a product equal to Cognac that would also appeal more to German tastes.

Today Asbach has had a strong market presence for over 100 years and the brand continues to grow. Indeed, the great success of Asbach must be attributed to the initial standards of quality established first by Hugo Asbach. To begin with, the brandy is made almost exclusively of grapes from the Charente region in France (that region of France which contains the town of Cognac and where Cognac is made.) Compliance with precisely-defined specifications and the harvest of low yielding vines ensure the high quality of wines which later become the Asbach spirit. Distillation is done in small copper condensing and distilling kettles [pictured above left] to obtain only the purest distillates. A typical feature of this process is the double distillation, in which a virgin distillate is won in the first phase and is refined later in the second one. These spirits are later stored in small barrels made of Limousin oak in order to allow the exchange of oxygen, wood and distillate. These oak barrels, also named barriques, have a maximum capacity of 300 litres. Here the distillates age for between 24 to 46 months, i.e. significantly longer than the 12 months provided for by law. Finally, it is the master distiller's experience and sure instinct that lets him compose a harmonious blend with up to 25 individual distillates of different vintages and origin making up any one bottle of Asbach. After this blending, the Asbach specialties marry in oak vats for between three and six months before they are bottled for sale.

Other reviews... Amber. Spicy, dried fruit and raisin aromas. A soft entry leads to a dryish medium-bodied palate with wood spice and mild dried fruit notes. Finishes with a fruity, peppery fade of lean wood notes and peppery alcohol. Pleasant wood and spice notes, but not a lot of complexity. 38% Alc.Vol.

    Baitz Kirsch Fruit Brandy (500ml)
    Victoria, AUSTRALIA
    $44. 99
    Bottle
    $539.88 Dozen
    ABV: 32%
Kirsch is not actually a liqueur (as often thought) but a stone fruit brandy. It can be produced using a variety of ingredients including cherries, prunes or plums. Slivovitz is comparable. The crushed kernels of the fruit are included with the fruit juice before fermentation as they infuse the brandy with a fine, bitter tang. Baitz Kirsch is bottled for sale at high alcoholic strength (32% alc./vol.) and is unsweetened. It is clear and colourless with a sharp acid cherry nose. The palate is strong and penetrating, finishing with a sharp acid cherry flavour.

Yet another brand produced at Distillerie des Moisans, a 60-hectare estate in the town of Sireuil, half of which falls in Cognac's Fins Bois sub-region. The family owned company makes Deau Cognacs, amongst other spirits and liqueurs. Cellar Master, Christophe Gauville plays with different methods of distillation and maturation, combining several eaux-de-vie to create well-balanced compositions. His experience with blending fine cognacs is evident in this deeply coloured, fresh and inviting brandy offering aromas and flavours of fruit mince pie, prunes, dried apricots and aged grappa with a crisp, lip smacking acid thread through the spicy finish. Beyond the plain presentation, it's a vibrant, fine-tuned and easily recommendable VSOP that needn't be reserved for mixing. 40% Alc./Vol.

Bass & Flinders Distillery Ochre Fine Aged Brandy (700ml)
    Mornington Peninsula, Victoria, AUSTRALIA
    $220. 00
    Bottle
    $2640.00 Dozen
    ABV: 45%

A first of its kind in Australia, Ochre is double distilled in a copper Alembic still on the Mornington Peninsula from Victorian Chardonnay grapes. Maturation takes place in 330-litre and 110-litre French oak barrels have been previously used to store cognac for up to 25 years in France.

Bass & Flinders aspired to produce a world-class aged spirit when establishing their distillery in 2009. A spirit that could not only match its international counterparts but also capture the essence of the ‘Australian spirit’ in a bottle. Early in the piece Bass & Flinders looked to France for inspiration on their production methods of fine brandies to guide the way they made this product. The result is a beautifully handcrafted Australian style aged spirit. Enclosed in a leather wrap, it makes for an exquisite gift. Please note: ABV is typically 40% but will vary from batch to batch.

Notes from the producers... With a light amber honey colour the spirit's bouquet includes initial notes of riped pink lady, orange peel and cherry blossom which mature into deeper layers of raisins, caramel and vanilla. It's palate is an immediate blend of spices: cinnamon and cloves on the front palate, followed by subtle hints of almond and apple peel rounded out with a smooth vanilla mouthfeel for depth and length.Serve at slightly above room temperature, warming through the glass in your hand to allow the aromas and flavours to open up. 40% Alc./Vol

Earlier batch tasted 2015... Ideal clarity to the bright pure gold colour. Nosing yields rich, soft and pure aromas of apricot tart, prune, followed by fruit’n’nut chocolate, with later passes accenting fruit cake and clove. Entry is soft, medium dry; mid palate ups the intensity and is more grappa-like offering rich fruit cake, dried apricot and sweet spices to finish. Excellent length. Ends pleasantly warming, mildly tannic, waxy and lively. Vibrant, complex and different.

The Hardy's XO label now been changed to Black Bottle XO Brandy.  From what we know, this is the same product with an altered name and subtle label change.

Brandy actually has a long association with many of Australia’s pioneering family wineries and older bottlings remain one of the Australian Wine Industry’s true hidden gems - if you can find them. This extraordinary example is the product of over 150 years of winemaking experience at Hardy’s. Since 1853 when Thomas Hardy first established his wine company on the banks of the River Torrens in Adelaide, South Australia, the pursuit of refined excellence has been a consuming passion. In addition to the production of the renowned pot still 'Black Bottle Brandy', Hardy's have also earned the enviable reputation of producing one of the nation’s finest aged brandies.

Produced from warm climate Doradilla, Palomino & Sultana grapes, these varieties are most suited to brandy production because when picked at around 10-11 degrees Baume they produce a neutral, clean wine with high acid. As in Cognac, the wine is immediately transferred to pot stills for double distillation. Eighteen year old spirit forms the foundation of this brandy while further material in excess of thirty years old has been added to develop the desired levels of complexity, flavour and richness. Prolonged maturation takes place in premium Limousin oak casks from the forests near Cognac, France. Testament to this spirit’s pedigree is the fact that it has been awarded some 20 trophies and 21 gold medals since first being produced in 1996. Packaged in an exquisite decanter and satin lined box, the excitement and anticipation begins long before the cork is popped! This is an ideal gift, personal or corporate, guaranteeing unprecedented 'wows'.

Tasting Note: [Hardy's XO 8/03/2005] Wonderful deep golden brown colour with pale golden hue - Indicitatve of the Brandy's age. Abundant, rich aromas of plum pudding, vanilla, fine chocolate and sultana. Smooth, sweet and silky entry into a gently warming palate which is laden with mouthfilling flavours of spicy plum pudding, vanilla, chocolate, with a touch of cedar and leather, terrific texture, impeccably balanced. Spice and dark chocolate dominate the back palate. The finish is remarkable. Like Malcolm Blight's 1976 torpedo after the siren, incredibly long and straight, precision and power harmoniously combined. A distinguished spirit of the very finest quality, worthy of prominent place in any serious bar. 39% Alc/Vol.

Showing no loss of vitality after six decades in oak, it's seductive and silky with a superb rush of fruit cake, baking spices, rancio and café crèmes framed by super fine tannins and a creamy finish that's briefly succulent and fabulously long. Head south from Hobart into the Huon Valley, and you'll find where ex-convict Charles Oates and his family planted the region's first apple trees, now home to the distillery bearing his name. Inspired by the brandy tradition of Calvados in North-West France, the venture has gone to considerable lengths, even importing the first alembic Charentais copper still into Australia - modelled on the French originals. Tasted from a 20ml sample, the brandy pours brass gold. Swirling releases subtle scents of apple tart, quince paste and dustings of cinnamon. Orchard fruits vie with spicy oak but the fruity finish wins out in a delicious surge of apple pie, cinnamon stick and vanilla bean. Strikes some resemblance to fruity or sherried Speyside single malt. Try it as a digestif or with mature cheeses. 40% Alc./Vol.

Taking a lead from 'Pommeau de Normandie', Charles Oates blend young apple brandy with the must of fresh apples. They then age it in casks for around twelve months. The resulting 'liqueur' offers gorgeous aromas of caramel fudge, apple strudel and baking spices. It's brisk, silky and deliciously fresh in the mouth, with cider and baked apple flavours rounded off by hints of ripe pear. Drying tannins balance the fruit. Intended as an aperitif, but experiment with blue cheeses too. 18.2% Alc./Vol. Tasted from a 20ml sample.

    Armagnac, FRANCE
    $79. 99
    Bottle
    $959.88 Dozen
    ABV: 42%

Laubade's 'Signature' moves away from typical Armagnac notes of dates, prunes and wood spices, leaning this towards a young French brandy. The shy aromas are almost winey and floral for the genre, although there's better definition on the palate where dried peach and subtle fruit cake notes come through. An injection of oak adds vanilla and warming spice to the finish. It feels slightly light-on for Armagnac, but this easy-going, vibrant 'contemporary' style would work as an aperitif. It was partly aged in barrels used to mature dry white wines from the Lesgourgues family's Graves property in Bordeaux - which goes some way to account for the profile. 42% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Quite perfumed and floral, this is a fresher, brighter spirit with more fruit evident on the nose. It’s also noticeably hotter on the tongue, though it’s still quite gentle, which helps to focus one’s attention on the bigger, brighter florals in the mix. Violets are curiously strong here, and the caramel character is more aggressive. There’s a bit of spice on the finish, which is otherwise youthful, fresh, and lively — albeit rather simplistic. - drinkhacker.com

A Baco dominant Armagnac filled out with Ugni Blanc, Colombard and Folle Blanche, blended with material up to 20 years old. The beautiful honey-topaz colour is reminscent of autumn leaves. Opening whiffs are gently peppery, fruity, full and nicely balanced: Ripe plums, fruit cake and delicate vanilla aromas develop, with 1-2 minutes of air-time drying the nose-feel. A medium to full bodied Armagnac with controlled sweet-dry flavours, richening up towards the finish in a slow surge of dried fruits, honey and sticky date. Cigar box, cold tea and hints of orchard fruits weave through the aftertaste. A step up from the somewhat woody and lean VSOP, this shows better definition and steady presence. 40% Alc./Vol.

A six year old Bas Armagnac produced from Ugni Blanc and Folle Blanche with a splash of Colombard and Baco. Located in Sorbets d’Armagnac, Château de Laubade is surrounded by 260 acres of vineyard. Since 1998, the third generation have been actively involved making the label a reference in the Armagnac category, with Arnaud and Denis Lesgourgues at the helm.

Tasting note: Bright polished brass. First pass presents mildly green / grassy / vegetal notes as well as roasted herbs; quite lean and peppery for the genre. 3-4 minutes does little to coax beyond a woody, astringent nose-feel. Follows through in a medium bodied, drier-styled brandy with restrained plum and dried fruit notes. Finish brings a vanilla aspect; fades warming, brisk, understated with white pepper and cedary oak through the aftertaste. 40% Alc./Vol.

    ABV: 37%

Chateau Tanunda was established in 1890 after an opportunity for wine exports to Europe was identified due to the drop in supply from France hit by phylloxera. At the time, the Barossa wine industry was disorganised and made up of over 560 small farmer-grower producers. While vineyards were expanding, what was lacking was the winery space. Hence, plans for the enormous Chateau Tanunda transpired. The schisty bluestone for the edifice of the building was dug from a quarry in nearby Bethany. John Basedow and his men completed the edifice in eleven months, which was the biggest building in the Southern Hemisphere at the time. Once established, the winery could handle 100 tons of grapes per day. Brandy was big business too. By 1902 exports totalled 80,000 gallons (approx. 360,000 litres). While wine has since become the primary focus, Tanunda's historic brandy label maintains a small but loyal following. 37% Alc./Vol.

The flavours are robust, hinting at ripe grapes, fruit bread, citrus zest and oak spice with a zesty, tingling, pomace-like finish. The XO classification makes it a value buy, good enough for sipping straight from a warmed glass and ideal for mixing tasty brandy-based cocktails. 40% Alc./Vol.

In spite of the fact that he took an interest in grape cultivation on the island of Elba and much cognac is connected with his name, Napoleon (who almost certainly had cancer of the stomach) was quite indifferent to what he ate and drank. This truth of history has not deterred inumerable brandies from adopting his title as a rather meaningless designation of quality.

Nevertheless, 100% French brandy at this price is uncommon. Perhaps that’s why Chatelle’s popularity as an everyday drinking brandy maintains its strength. Recommended. Always good value. 37% alc./vol.

    ABV: 40%

Between September and November, Drouin harvests thirty organically grown apple varieties including bitter, bitter-sweet, sweet and sharp cider, then naturally ferments them. Typically kept for months in vats and tuns, young cider is distilled to produce fruity spirits destined to be sold as young calvados, while cider that’s kept longer is distilled around June to produce a more robust spirit better suited to long ageing. Drouin uses casks that may have previously contained sherry, port, rivesaltes (a type of sweet wine) and banyuls (French fortified wine). In this example, the Réserve is a blend of several distillates mostly aged in smaller used casks. The style intends to offer a nice balance between primary orchard fruit notes and spices. 40% Alc./Vol.

Produced from Pays d'Auge fruit with a portion aged in small 225 litre x-wine casks, plus a number of x-fortified wine casks, it's described as a crisp, focused and appetising Calvados showing lovely balance and persistence. Expect notes of sweet cider, baked apples, gingerbread, vanilla and cinnamon with a supple, generous palate and an apply finish. 40% Alc./Vol.

...Ripe, dripping baked apple with flecks of delectably musty golden pear on the nose lead into a heavenly calvados. "Exuding warm spice, lightly caramelized sugar, and fresh apple peel, Christian Drouin VSOP Calvados checks all the classic cider brandy boxes and more. Other reviews... For their XO product, Drouin incorporates a portion of ex-cognac casks into the usual mix, otherwise dominated by ex-Bordeaux barrels. The youngest spirit in this bottle is eight years old, but it includes some far older stocks as well. The influence of cognac and sherry casks here is almost unmistakable, but adds a welcome aromatic signature. The nutty, saline and sea-breeze character form a nice counterpoint to the dense, vivid, ripe apple component. This has clearly gained depth and complexity with age, but it has not fallen into the trap of becoming too oxidative or overwhelmed by wood. 90 points - distiller.com

Notes from the producers... offers a harmonious nose mixing baked apples, almond and spice hints. The mouth is supple, soft and well developed. Fruity at first it evolves towards vanilla and woodier notes.

Drouin Calvados began rather unintentionally. Christian Drouin Sr., grandfather to the current head of the company, purchased a country house in the Pays d'Auge area of Normandy in 1960. The house sat on a farm with an apple orchard and Drouin Sr. harvested the apples on his estate in hopes of seeing a return. He was disappointed to find that the price for apples was so low that he wouldn't even recoup harvesting expenses, so he held onto his fruit and sought an alternative solution. His friend, Pierre Pivet, had a mobile still and would travel to various farms to distill cider into calvados. He agreed to advise Drouin on pressing his apples into cider and distilling the cider into calvados, teaching him the art from start to finish. Thanks to Pivet, even the earliest bottlings from the company were of a consistent and high quality. For the next twenty years, Drouin dived headfirst into the distillation process, before putting eux-de-vie aside for aging. Ever since, the family business has continued to blossom with his grandson, Guillaume now at the forefront of production and business management.
