    Antinori Tignanello Grappa (500ml)
    Tuscany, ITALY
    $110. 00
    Bottle
    $1320.00 Dozen
    ABV: 42%

Tignanello is a famous Italian red table wine produced from a blend of 80% Sangiovese, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc. It broke new ground in Tuscany during the mid 1970’s and early 1980’s being first Sangiovese to be aged in barriques, the first modern styled red wine blended with non-traditional varieties like Cabernet, and one of the first red wines in Chianti not to use white grapes. Tignanello's grappa is produced from the pomace of its namesake.

Tasting note: Clear, brilliant silvery appearance. Perfumed aromas are waxy (candlewax, crayons), then spicy, fruity notes emerge, in particular raisin and plum. Becomes more bread and pastry like with aeration. A soft light entry builds into a mouthfilling, spicy profile that’s medium to full bodied, dryish, with spicy dried fruits (especially plum). Finishes dry, light and oily. Aftertaste of sultana followed by a faint cocoa fade. 42% Alc./Vol.

Tasting note: [Lot 19352-55] Distilled from the pomace of Glera grapes from the Prosecco region, and aged for over two years in barriques. Straw gold in colour, Malvolti's Fine Vecchia is similar to the 'Finissima', especially on the nose, but with a more luxurious mouth feel. Fruit cake and gentle spice feature while barrel ageing has further softened the profile, adding a delicious thread of vanilla sweetness to the finish. It also shows better persistence. Try it with spiced desserts. 38% Alc./Vol.

In Italy, Grappa production historically centered in the North above a line going from Venezia to Genoa. There were good reasons for this. Here, in the cooler wine regions relatively close to the Alps, unspoiled, fresh pomace, integral to quality Grappa was easier to source. Today, thanks to enological advances allowing pomace to be kept under inert conditions during transport, it's produced in every Italian wine region. Grappa's increasing popularity has also been driven by technological advances in distillation, specifically from the 19th century onwards, during which the term 'Grappa' became associated with specific production methods. The rise in quality led to the setting up of protected designations of origin, with Italy counting ten.

Not surprisingly, Grappa is produced in many guises, with regional specifity often associated with particular grape varietals, like Nebbiolo or Brachetto. They may be aged in glass only, when a fresher, more vibrant style is desired, but they can also undergo a maturation process in different types of wood.

In this case, 'Grappa Invecchiata' or Vecchia refers to spirits aged between 12 and 18 months in oak, bestowing a deep golden colour. 40% Alc./Vol.

Tasting note: Produced from muscat grapes. Crystal clear with a glossy, silvery appearance. Perfumed opening aromas are sweet and fruity, at first reminiscent of young muscat. Aeration intensifies the aromas as they take on an unexpectedly tropical fruit edge that’s one part lychee and one part passionfruit / feijoa with a slice of banana thrown in. Wow! Entry is soft and semi sweet, mildly glycerous. The mid palate develops with terrific length, as pear tart, lychee and feijoa flavours are accompanied by a spicy flourish. Jacopo Poli Sassicaia di Grappa (500ml)
    Veneto, ITALY
    $150. 00
    Bottle
    $1800.00 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

The highly regarded Jacopo Poli distillery is an artisan operation solely owned by the Poli family, founded in 1898 in Schiavon, near Bassano del Grappa, in the hearth of Veneto, the most typical region for Grappa production. The grapes and pomace for this grappa (80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Cabernet Franc) were sourced from Tuscany’s famed Sassicaia vineyard. Soon after the pomace arrives at the distillery (still dripping with wine) distillation takes place in copper pot stills after which the product is aged for at least four years in Allier oak barrels, and another three years in bottle.

Tasting note: Very pale straw colour. Appealing, lifted aromas are salty, herbal and biscuity at first becoming sweeter and dried apple like (more peel than pulp) with aeration. After five minutes the aromas reduce rather than accentuate. Entry is silky. Mid palate shows good concentration and is at the sweeter end of the grappa spectrum with buttery, mildly nutty flavours followed by a creamy, vanilla custard finish. Aftertaste is clean and dry with a faint butterscotch / vanilla fade that’s a little short, however this seduces with its textural qualities and beautiful poise. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Compared to most fiery grappas, this one enters aged brandy territory. It has a bright topaz hue and a big, butterscotchy flavor accented by clove and hot cinnamon sparks, with a drying feel. Pair it with a rich, fruity dessert. 91 points - wineenthusiast.com

Notes from the the producers... Amber, with great aromatic richness. A scent of spices, brioche and pastry, orange and candied fruit. Warm, velvety and persistent, in one’s mouth it confirms its aromatic shades with the addition of apricot fruit notes, vanilla and bitter almond. It should be served at room temperature wide balloon-type glass. Its perfect to conclude a meal, even accompanied with a good cigar. Unforgettable if coupled with foie gras, dark chocolate or chocolate-based warm desserts, also perfect if added to ice-cream or to exalt the fragrance of prawn risotto.

The Nonino family have devoted themselves to the art of distillation since 1897 and each generation has been consistently improving and innovating to change the perception of this ancient Friulian distillate. In 1973 Nonino became the first producer to create a single varietal Grappa from the indigenous Picolit grape, setting a trend which the rest of Italy’s distillers would follow. Nonino has tirelessly campaigned for the preservation of local varieties, establishing the ‘Risit d’Aur’ (Golden Rootstock) Award in 1975, which is awarded annually to Friulian growers who preserve and propagate native vine material. In 1984 Nonino again set the standard with ‘ÙE’, distilling from whole grapes to preserve their unique aromas and flavours and softness on the palate. And in 2000, the Noninos created Gioiello, a pure honey distillate to complement a range that few producers can rival for quality.

One of the oldest labels in the highly competitive market for Italian grappas, Candolini is made from several varieties including Sangiovese, Trebbiano, Cabernet, Aglianico and Falanghina. A point of difference here is the use of 85% free-run grape juice as well as pips and stems, rather than the residue alone. Powerful aromas open with candle wax, fruit and herb bread, becoming fresh crushed grape-like with a sweet sultana core. The palate is soft at first, building concentration in a juicy grape and dried fruit flavour burst, gentle spices adding depth. Light, fresh and clean showing excellent balance and persistence, the final stages are delicately warming and waxy, with those earlier dried fruit notes lingering. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... As grappas go, Candolini Bianca — made by Fratelli Branca and a top seller in its homeland of Italy — is as light on its feet as they get. That pungency that unaged grappa unilaterally shows is front and center on the nose, but those typically musty notes here instead come across with aromas of roasted mushrooms, rosemary and sage, and burning underbrush. Time in glass helps things to meld, revealing a complex — yet intensely earthy — character. On the palate the grappa shows off an interesting floral character — honeysuckle blended with toasted almonds, brown butter, and more of that lingering mushroom character, though this time it’s more akin to mushrooms sauteed in butter with a spray of fresh herbs on top. The lengthy finish offers hints of lemongrass, marzipan, and more sage notes. Grappa is definitely an acquired taste, but Candolini’s expression is an interesting and expressive entry to the category. - drinkhacker.com

    $1440.00 Dozen

    Notes sourced from Enoteca Sileno

    Grape variety: 100% Moscato
Region: The north west region of Piemonte in the area around the villages of Barbaresco and Barolo.
Production: A small vapour steam boiler is filled with freshly fermented grape mark. The vapour begins to rise at 80°C that includes the alcohol and other materials that enrich the grappa. In the column where the vapour forms into droplets the vapour is cooled and further vapourised many times.
The first distillation formed in the condenser (the head) is discarded. In the central phase the heart of the Grappa, rich in substance and aroma is formed. In the final phase (the tail) is also discarded. With fresh grape mark the cycle of distillation can recommence.
Producing grappa from Moscato marc is often a hard undertaking due to the immediate comparison that is made between the grappa and the wine produced from the Muscat grape, but we believe we have produced a grappa that reflects all the aromatic characteristics of the grape, with the Moscato touch unmistakable. The absolute finesse of the aromas is joined in the mouth by an extreme softness and a sweet Muscat aftertaste, which arouses lovely, lasting aromatic impressions, which are not covered by the alcohol content.

If you're Italian, you may have memories of eccentric relatives who visited wineries during the harvest season. They came back not with fresh grapes, but with a mushy residue of skins, seeds, pulp and grape stems. Known as 'pomace', (a word used for centuries by English cider makers) it was more often reserved for cattle feed or compost. But skilled Italians have long known how to transform it into one of the world's most seductive spirits - Grappa.

Grappa is produced in many guises, with regional specifity often associated with particular grape varietals, like Nebbiolo or Brachetto. Primitivo, the Puglian grape par excellence, here becomes the distinctive note of Beltion's Grappa di Primitivo. 40% Alc./Vol.

The Inga family have been involved in the production of liquors and spirits in Sicily since 1832. Before then they had been producing grappa for the famous Libarna brand. Today, this rich family tradition is carried on by brothers, Federico and Lorenzo Inga. Their grappa is made from the first pressing pomace from DOC and DOCG wineries then aged in small oak casks.

    Nardini Aquavite Riserva Grappa (700ml)
    Bassano, Vicenza, ITALY
    $120. 00
    Bottle
    $1440.00 Dozen
    ABV: 50%

A grape pomace grappa from the large Nardini firm. This is Italy's best-selling premium grappa. The Riserva is aged for a minimum of three years in Slavonian oak barrels. Staff who tasted the Nardini Grappas side by side generally had a preference for this one, despite the slightly lower point score due to the subdued aromatics.

Tasting note: Pale gold / straw colour. Aromas offer subdued green olive, black peppercorn and saffron notes. Minutes later the aromas haven’t budged or intensified with the exception of some dried apricot emerging and a gentle spirit prickle. Entry is very soft, off dry, resiny and with a spicy, warm backbone developing sweet raisin and spicy green olive flavours at mid palate. Finishes pleasantly pine wood like, fresh, dry; a little short with a gentle spiciness persisting. Very well balanced at this high ABV. 50% Alc./Vol.

Nardini Rue Flavoured Aquavite Bianco Grappa (700ml)
    Bassano, Vicenza, ITALY
    $110. 00
    Bottle
    $1320.00 Dozen
    ABV: 43%

Nardini is Italy's best-selling premium grappa. The company adds rue to this traditional therapeutic specialty. Piperno, a Neapolitan physician, in 1625, commended Rue as a specific against epilepsy and vertigo. It's known as a strongly stimulating and antispasmodic plant, used for coughs, croupy affections, colic and flatulence.

Tasting note: Very pale straw/gold appearance is almost water like, if not for the slight viscosity. Opening sniffs detect hints of beeswax combined with herbal notes (dried dill), cabbage and mustard pickle. A water like entry slowly unfolds into a concentrated, off dry profile that includes grape must, beeswax and delicately bitter herbal notes. Juicy finish. A surge of warming spices follows through to the surprisingly light aftertaste with a subtle beeswax cocoa fade. 43% Alc.Vol.

Other reviews... Nosing passes pick up earthy/woodsy scents of damp soil, vegetation, rubber pencil eraser, uncooked broccoli, mushrooms, and lead pencil. Palate entry is semisweet, intensely herbal, and very pleasurable; at midpalate the surface sweetness doesn’t get in the way of the earthy/musky and spirity foundation flavors. Finishes sweet, very vegetal and herbal. 90-95 points - www.wineenthusaist.comsize>
