Armagnac

Cognac and Armagnac are only 128 kilometres apart, but as brandies they're quite different in style. While Cognac strives for a smooth, supple spirit, Armagnac tends towards a richer, sometimes more pungent, earthy character with a dancing fire at the back of the throat and lots of dried fruit flavour. Delve into the rustic charms of Gascony's native spirit and discover the best selection of Armagnac online right here. To learn more about this fascinating region, click here.

    $750. 00
    Bottle
    $9000.00 Dozen
    ABV: 40%
Tasting note: Bottled in 2019, the 1960 Castarede is one of the most elegant Armagnacs we’ve tasted to date. Heading into dessert territory, it opens with sustained, high pitch aromas of sticky date and pecan pie unfolding with hints of salted-caramel chocolate and Grand Muscat. Showing no loss of vitality after six decades in oak, it's seductive and silky with a superb rush of fruit cake, baking spices, rancio and café crèmes framed by super fine tannins and a creamy finish that's briefly succulent and fabulously long. Reference point here is the Dartigalongue house style. It should equally please lovers of Hors d'age Cognac. 40% Alc./Vol.

The Northwestern portion of the Bas-Armagnac (known casually as the Grand Bas Armagnac) has a concentration of quality producers, especially in the department of Les Landes.

This superb example from Castaredes has been produced from Ugni blanc, Folle Blanche, Colombard and Baco 22 varietals and aged in excess of 20 years.

Tasting note: Deep polished copper / mahogany colour is bright and shows ideal clarity. Gradually builds, issuing a mild nose prickle as it releases vanilla, mocha and date to open. Returning 5-8 minutes later finds the accent shifted towards mocha, brown sugar and brittle toffee-apple. Clean, fresh, concentrated and beautifully balanced, it offers semi sweet flavours of coffee, cocoa and prunes; hints of black pepper accentuate towards the finish delivering a pleasant heat to conclude satisfying, dry and woody with a cafe-creme, hazelnut fade. 40% Alc./Vol.

Sensuous aromatics include creme caramel, roasted almonds, coffee bean and vanilla notes - quite feminine when compared to the ’68 and certainly more layered, with time in the glass bringing out aromas of dried fruits (dates and dried apricot). Dried fruit repeats on the palate; vanilla and spice flavours are carried by the gently warming spirit. Finishes long and dry with a subtle dried apricot and roast almond fade. A culmination of rich know-how and dedication to quality from three generations, the Lesgourgues family continue to run their own 260 acre property. Planted to Ugni Blanc, Folle Blanche & Baco, each variety is distilled seperately. Notably, Laubade remains alone in coopering their own Gascon oak casks. Other reviews... The nose is aromatic and offers gourmandize as well as a fine creaminess. It reveals notes of caramelized apple, stewed peach and small notes of caramelized mandarin associated with small touches of cedar, dried zest, a hint of dried fruit, dried white flowers as well as hints of Bourbon vanilla clove and a subtle hint of peat (in the background). The palate is mineral, elegant, fruity and offers volume, a beautiful matter, a beautiful definition, finesse, elegance, a fine creaminess as well as a beautiful aerial side in its richness / in its matter. On the palate, this Armagnac expresses notes of caramelized apple, crushed / jammy small white fruits and small notes of caramelization associated with touches of crystallized mandarin, pâtisseries, hints of toasted almonds, nutmeg as well as a subtle hint of vanilla cream and a discreet almost coconut hint (in the background).93-94 points - VertdeVin

    Armagnac, FRANCE
    $79. 99

    $959.88 Dozen
    ABV: 42%

Laubade's 'Signature' moves away from typical Armagnac notes of dates, prunes and wood spices, leaning this towards a young French brandy. The shy aromas are almost winey and floral for the genre, although there's better definition on the palate where dried peach and subtle fruit cake notes come through. An injection of oak adds vanilla and warming spice to the finish. It feels slightly light-on for Armagnac, but this easy-going, vibrant 'contemporary' style would work as an aperitif. It was partly aged in barrels used to mature dry white wines from the Lesgourgues family's Graves property in Bordeaux - which goes some way to account for the profile. 42% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Quite perfumed and floral, this is a fresher, brighter spirit with more fruit evident on the nose. It’s also noticeably hotter on the tongue, though it’s still quite gentle, which helps to focus one’s attention on the bigger, brighter florals in the mix. Violets are curiously strong here, and the caramel character is more aggressive. There’s a bit of spice on the finish, which is otherwise youthful, fresh, and lively — albeit rather simplistic. - drinkhacker.com

A Baco dominant Armagnac filled out with Ugni Blanc, Colombard and Folle Blanche, blended with material up to 20 years old. The beautiful honey-topaz colour is reminscent of autumn leaves. Opening whiffs are gently peppery, fruity, full and nicely balanced: Ripe plums, fruit cake and delicate vanilla aromas develop, with 1-2 minutes of air-time drying the nose-feel. A medium to full bodied Armagnac with controlled sweet-dry flavours, richening up towards the finish in a slow surge of dried fruits, honey and sticky date. Cigar box, cold tea and hints of orchard fruits weave through the aftertaste. A step up from the somewhat woody and lean VSOP, this shows better definition and steady presence. 40% Alc./Vol.

A six year old Bas Armagnac produced from Ugni Blanc and Folle Blanche with a splash of Colombard and Baco. Since 1998, the third generation have been actively involved making the label a reference in the Armagnac category, with Arnaud and Denis Lesgourgues at the helm.

Tasting note: Bright polished brass. First pass presents mildly green / grassy / vegetal notes as well as roasted herbs; quite lean and peppery for the genre. 3-4 minutes does little to coax beyond a woody, astringent nose-feel. Follows through in a medium bodied, drier-styled brandy with restrained plum and dried fruit notes. Finish brings a vanilla aspect; fades warming, brisk, understated with white pepper and cedary oak through the aftertaste. 40% Alc./Vol.

Francois and Marc Darroze are the watchful and patient custodians of 250 different Armagnacs, including more than 50 vintages (spanning a century), sourced from the western portion of the Bas-Armagnac region, historically referred to as Grand Bas-Armagnac. Little surprise then that uber critic Robert Parker named Marc’s father, Francois, “the Pope of Armagnac”.

Around 30 estates contribute to their "Unique Collection" with each barrel finishing its ageing in the Roquefort and Labastide d’Armagnac cellars. These are rustic spirits, entering the alembic via small vineyards, distilled by reputable mobile distillers, each demanding several decades of careful ageing in oak barrels in order to express a sense of place and vintage. The typical Armagnac grower raises a range of animals fed by many different crops, plus a small vineyard, part of which is distilled every year and aged in one or more barrels which constitute the savings of the farm. A sick bull, a dying horse or a retiring tractor are repaired or replaced by the sale of a barrel. Multiply the number of farms and vintages and you have the dizzying variety of the Darroze collection: Different because each farm is almost as unique as each barrel. Add to this zero reduction (only through ageing), no caramel colouring as well as labeling transparency and you have Armagnacs that are all about the time in oak (once in glass, nothing improves or changes. An 1890 Armagnac bottled in 1900 is no better than a 2007 bottled in 2017, but collectors don't want you to know that!)

Francis and Marc Darroze roam the best estates and terroirs of Bas Armagnac in search of the most beautiful and distinctive brandies. Notes from Darroze... Nice golden and brilliant colour. Some fruit notes )quince, orange peels, apricot) are dominant in the nose. With air, the Armagnac reveals fines spiced flavours and some very delicate oaky fragrances. On the palate, again fruits and spices. Tannins are silky and fine. 48.5% Alc./Vol.

The further you go back in Delord's vintage series, the richer they get. Given ample air contact, the 1983 develops buttery aromas and flavours also hinting at baked pears, dried red fruits, pastry and nutty rancio. Its depth and texture make for a plump, soft Armagnac; polished, well proportioned, perfect to enjoy on its own and with enough acid to balance the dense core of dried fruits. 40% Alc./Vol. Bottled in June 2022.

The oldest Delord from a recent vertical is this flamboyant, chestnut coloured 1973, a once-off vintage dated expression. Benefiting from 5-10 minutes of air contact, it develops into a buttery, creamy-textured brandy boasting impressive depth including layers of sticky date, raisins and fruit cake as well as hints of dried flowers, backed up by vibrant spices. Oak is encroaching, but enough fruit character is retained - even if you have to roll it around your mouth to extract it. Showing off a feminine and refined side not often experienced in Armagnac, this will make for a sumptuous, end-of-the-night alternative to XO Cognac or sherried Single Malts. 40% Alc./Vol.

Since 2018, the minimum for XO is ten years old (it was previously just six) and while the exact age isn't stated, this is probably a blend that includes some much older brandies. Typical for Armagnac are the scents of ripe plums, dried apricots, dark chocolate and gingerbread, complexed by hints of tobacco and hazelnut. They're repeated in a medium bodied palate where vanilla, cedary oak, liquorice bullets, cinnamon and pepper warmth carry the finish. The persistence is good, and being neither too fiery, nor too dry or sweet, Delord have created a better than average point of entry for newcomers to the category. It's also a friendly all-rounder, so apart from being enjoyed over ice, after a meal or matched with chocolate, nuts or dried fruits, this has enough body to work in cocktails. 40% Alc./Vol.

Step away from Delord's core range and you get to explore their vintage dated series. These bottlings frequently deliver greater individuality and texture. A fine food Armagnac, the 1996 opens with a lifted, vibrant bouquet but loses intensity and definition after a short time in the glass. Residual notes of vanilla and rancio return on the palate where a thread of acidity cuts through flavours of prunes and cinnamon, adding freshness. The aftertaste is dry, nutty, warming and medium long. Bottled in May 2022. 40% Alc./Vol.

Varnishy notes dissipate after several seconds revealing pristine, delicately grapey aromas with hints of beeswax and almond. Good concentration. Grappa-like, medium dry, lightly fruity and waxy with a burst of spice. Ends fresh, dry with the fruity notes and gentle spices persisting. Lovely eau-de-vie. Bas Armagnac, lying to the sandier west of the Armagnac region, is where the Armagnacs are fuller but more supple with a scent of prunes or plums when a little of the spirit is rubbed in the hands. It is named for its lower altitude, rather than lower quality. In the Western part, Sablo-Limoneux is mostly sand, and makes acidic wine. Sablo-Fauves is rich in ferrous minerals that contribute to both colour and flavour in the wines. The Eastern part of Bas-Armagnac has boulbène, a heavy topsoil that covers subsoil of clay and sand. Bas Armagnac is one of the very few places where sandy soil is considered desirable. In fact, Armagnac from the Bas region is considered to have the most finesse, also tending to yield spirits that are very supple in their youth. Here is a case in point. The plump bouquet offers notes of toffee apple, dates, liquorice all-sorts, vanilla and cocoa, while the silky entry builds into a semi sweet, softly spiced, medium bodied brandy that’s very raisiny and fruit cake-like; a little broad at mid palate, though pleasantly spicy and balanced, it finishes with a long vanilla, raisin and cinnamon aftertaste. At 4-5 years old, fruity, youthful styles like this lend themselves to cocktails as well as offering the perfect introduction to Armagnac on a budget. 40% Alc./Vol.

Produced from Colombard, Ugni Blanc & Bacco grapes. Beautiful polished copper penny colour. Generous aromas of almond biscotti, vanilla bean and light cigar box; secondary nosings shift the emphasis to fruit cake, prune and hints of quince. Full bodied and well rounded with an early oak drive; flavours of walnuts and cigar box are followed by a sweeter, peppery burst of dried fig and fruit cake. Concludes warm, satisfying, finely tannic with vanilla, marzipan and drying oak in the fade. A classic big-boned Bas-Armagnac with plenty of personality. 40% Alc./Vol.

The robust, spicy palate yields baked apple and raisin flavours followed by a wave of cinnamon, clove and nutmeg. Warming spirit tingle, almost prickly. Drying aftertaste of orange zest, vanilla, nutmeg and old leather. If extraordinary length is one indicator of an extraordinary Armagnac, this is solid but not one of the greats. 40% Alc./Vol.

Like most of Delord's vintage dated releases, only a tiny volume of the 1989 has made it to Australia. The brilliant copper penny colour shines from the glass and follows in a soft, well-rounded bouquet, balancing fruit and wood: Figs, dried apricot, prunes, vanilla…a touch of shellac, while more air contact accents pepper heat and increased oakiness, becoming mildly sappy, green-wood like. The style here is medium bodied with dried fruit flavours and a thrust of pepper. Muted clove, vanilla and cigar box through the finish. In a word, robust. 40% Alc./Vol.
