    Agwa Liqueur (700ml)
    Didam, NETHERLANDS
    $73. 99
    Bottle
    $887.88 Dozen
    ABV: 30%
Distilled and produced in Holland, AGWA de Bolivia is an "Alco-Jolt" made from the Bolivian coca leaf and contains Guarana and ginseng.
In 1820 the first Bolivian coca leaf liqueur was manufactured by the De Medici in Bologna, Italy and sold throughout Europe. Rudyard Kipling said the powerful elixir as being made "from the clippings and shavings of angels wings". The product was removed from the market with the banning of cocaine as rudimentary distilling did not remove cocaine. Today bales of Bolivian Coca leaf are shipped under armed guard to Amsterdam where they are distilled and an exact maceration and herbal extraction technique guarantee the removal of the cocaine to standards acceptable to European and US authorities. An extremely distinctive peppery herbal base is then blended with other herbs like guarana & ginseng to balance the taste and augment the effect.
For over 4000 years among the native Andean population the coca leaf has been used for ancient rituals and for everyday gift giving. Today it is drunk as a tea and chewed for hours by farmers and miners. The result is similar to a prolonged caffeine or tobacco buzz. But it's more than that. It improves stamina, is a sacred symbol central to community life and provides essential nutrients. 100 grams of coca would more than satisfy the daily-recommended allowance of calcium, iron, phosphorous, vitamin A and riboflavin. The World Health Organisation and the UN's Inter Regional Crime and Justice research institutes cocaine project maintains that coca users show none of the classic signs of addiction. In fact coca is not a major component of cocaine as only 0.5% of the alkaloid cocaine is found in coca and 41 chemicals are needed to extract cocaine from the coca leaf.

Guarana is the extract from the seeds of the common Amazonian climber Paullina Cupana. The South American Guarani Indians make a paste from the crushed seeds, cassava flour and water. The paste is rolled into cylinders and dried. The residue is then grated and the shavings are dissolved in hot sweet water. Typically the resultant brew contains about 5% caffeine; British tea contains 0.03% and coffee up to 0.08%. Caffeine is an alkaloid. An alkaloid is defined as any of various nitrogen containing organic bases obtained from plants. Caffeine is one of three types of alkaloids, the others being thophyliine and theobromine. Caffeine has a stimulating effect on the central nervous system, heart, blood vessels and kidneys. The positive effects that have been described in people who use caffeine include motor performance, decreased fatigue, enhanced sensory activity and increased alertness. However, caffeine intake may also produce such negative effects as irritability, nervousness or anxiety, headaches and insomnia. Caffeine acts rapidly. About100mg of caffeine starts to affect you in about 10 minutes, reaches its peak in an hour and lingers in your system for at least 3 hours.

True Ginseng is the source of a stimulant and supposed aphrodisiac that is extracted from the roots. It is native to China although closely related species, American Ginseng, occurs in Eastern North America and is sometimes substituted for the Chinese variety. Ginseng has a sweetly aromatic flavour. The basis of Ginseng's action is believed to be due to certain chemical agents in it that increase the brains adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) activity without involving the adrenal glands. A generalised mental arousal is thereby effected.

Leading authorities for Mayan and Inca studies have challenged Agwa's claim to be the world's first "Psycho-Active" spirit drink. Neither the claims nor the effect are disputed but a leading Mayan Foundation contends that, "Herbal based beverages were at the centre of practices by Mayan elders. Among their people these elders were great men and visionaries. The visions gave direction to the tribe and were the result of taking a spirit fermented from herbs and then flavoured with honey." This may indeed be a precursor to Agwa, however, the Mayan elders didn't actually drink the spirit. They filled a funnel shaped gourd with the liquid and inserted it where the sun doesn't shine. This is not among the recommended ways to use Agwa...

    Tete Japanese Botanicals Liqueur (720ml)
    JAPAN
    $99. 99
    Bottle
    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 12%

Tete botanical liqueur is released once annually so stocks are always fairly limited. In its creation, Ume plums are soaked in single-distillation pure shochu for one year along with nine Japanese botanicals: a piquancy springs from slowly macerated sansho and ginger root, while herbal elements come to the fore with wintergreen and a perfume of ume flower. Mandarin provides both brightness and acidity. Spicy cinnamon imparts light, woody notes and dried bonito heightens and unifies Tete's botanicals. This myriad of flavours results in a complex liqueur with a mouthwatering finish that lingers. 12% Alc./Vol.

    Bottle
    $671.88 Dozen
    ABV: 23%

Amaro Montenegro, "the liqueur of the virtues" , was created in 1885 thanks to the lengthy, impassioned experiments of a famous distiller and herbalist, Stanislao Cobianchi. The name "Montenegro" is a dedication to the beautiful princess Elena of Montenegro, who was engaged to Victor Emanuel III. In its over 100 years of history, Amaro Montenegro has seen its success grow continuously up to the present day, now being one of the leading brands on the Italian market. Produced from a blend of over 40 different herbs from all over the world Montenegro involves a distinct soaking and distillation process which results in a liquor sweet in taste with a slightly bitter finish. Appreciated as a digestive for consumption after meals, with soda, on ice or even hot. 23%Alc./Vol.

Tasting Notes "Displays early botanical scents of orange peel, fresh not dried coriander, red cherry, pekoe tea cucumber. Palate entry is sweet at first then it quickly turns mildly bitter and botanical; by midpalate, there's a slight sweetness of tangerine/mandarin peel. Aftertaste is moderately bittersweet and citrusy.
Rated: 90-95 Highly Recommended" -Wine Enthusiast.size>

Other reviews... Deep copper hue. Rich, Christmas pie, nutmeg, and herb aromas are inviting. A soft entry leads to a sweetish, light-to medium-bodied palate of bitter, medicinal herbs, honey, dried blood orange peel, and treacle. Finishes with a great mix of the sweet and bitter elements. Ancho Reyes Verde Chile Poblano Liqueur (700ml)
    MEXICO
    $89. 99
    Bottle
    $1079.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%
Upping the ante on the original family recipe, this makes the most of fresh, hand-picked poblanos, some of which are fire roasted to add more complexity and flavour. The chiles are then macerated in neutral cane spirit for half a year. Enjoy neat or spice up your cocktails.

Tasting note: Polished brass. Engaging, authentic aromas of fresh sliced capsicum / chile / Asian stir fry and hints of green olive. Sweet, creamy entry. Middle stage highlights grilled vegetables (capsicum / zucchini) and accents appealing pepper heat. Concludes drier with lively chillie spice, tobasco sauce and white pepper. Great persistence. Complex and skilfully crafted. 40% Alc./Vol.

Ancho Reyes Ancho Chile Liqueur (700ml)
    MEXICO
    $89. 99
    Bottle
    $1079.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%
Made with ancho chiles (aka dried poblano chiles) according to a recipe for a similar spirit enjoyed back in 1920s Mexico. One of very few chile infused beverages to hit the market.

Tasting note: Deep copper penny colour with some sediment evident. Unusual aromas of Thai-chilli sauce, sliced zucchini and mild wasabi, but neither prickly or hot. Palate is more convincing - true to style with semi-sweet chilli-sauce flavours and genuine heat. Finishes broad, slightly flat, with hints of cinnamon and lingering chile pepper warmth. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Though it's made with ancho chiles, this liqueur is modest on the spice scale. Caramel-y brown in the glass, look for a lightly herbaceous aroma similar to root beer and rounded flavors that mix caramel and cocoa with raisin and cinnamon heat, with a faint smokiness on the finish. Particularly harmonious mixed in cocktails with brown spirits like whiskey.

Applewood Distillery Unico Cello Limoncello Liqueur (500ml)
    Adelaide Hills, South Australia, AUSTRALIA
    $36. 99
    Bottle
    $443.88 Dozen
    ABV: 20%
Applewood take their Limoncello perhaps a tad seriously. Made from a safely guarded recipe - it employs two different types of lemons from South Australia's oldest citrus plantation in Lennane Orchards, Montacute Valley, Adelaide Hills - believed to be planted 150 years ago!

”Why is our Limoncello important?” Applewood explain, "The lemons are what one might call "UGLY". Yes, they are different sizes and kind of weird looking. Unfortunately, that meant that supermarkets did not want to buy them. So, after trying to sell these ugly little lemons for years, the growers decided to remove the 150 year old trees. To help preserve this historic orchard, Applewood Distillery put up our hands and promised to buy all whole crop to make our delicious Limoncello. It is our labour of love. Literally! We spend 12 hours hand peeling lemons from the orchard to produce this delicious drop. In fact, we have a family ritual of taking turns to peel a couple of buckets a day. Everyone chips in!"

Tasting note: Slightly cloudy pale lime-green. Issues a fabulously pure, lifted citrus bouquet of lemon pith / peel with marginal loss in intensity after 2-3 minutes air contact. A superb 'creme-de-lemon' in the mouth with a sweet, unctuous, toothcoating texture and delicate acidity. Lemon meringue and citrus oils through the lengthy aftertaste. Outstanding. 20% Alc./Vol.

Serving suggestion: Store in your freezer. Drink after a bowl of pasta. Mix with soda, ice and fresh lemon. Layer with thickened cream.

    $467.88 Dozen
    ABV: 20%
The team at Unico Zelo have made a new liqueur using the Riverland's juiciest and biggest mandarins. 'Mando' is Unico’s second foray into sustainable spirits, which last saw them turn imperfect lemons into limoncello. Creators, Laura and Brendan Carter hand-peeled a tonne of imperfect dekopon mandarins, fruit that would otherwise been wasted for being too small or unsightly for consumers. Steeped in grape-based alcohol for six weeks with a final addition of Queensland sugar before bottling, it's recommended over ice or in a Spritz. 20% Alc./Vol.

    ABV: 20%
Social and ecologically sustainable coffee beans are sourced from Mexico, Brazil & Papua New Guinea. They are freshly roasted in the Adelaide Hills by Johnny Scott from Mighty Mighty Coffee. Distilled spirit derived from local winemaking experiments gone awry is cold-dripped through the beans over 24 hours, and a cold-brew is then used to cut it back to a lower strength.

Tasting note: [tasted from a half-full bottle.] Translucent raw umber with gold edges. Delicately bitter-sweet aromas of mocha and cocoa are fresh and true to style. Super-viscous, dense, oily consistency in the mouth with sweet mocha, vanilla and roasted coffee bean flavours. Good balance given the intensity of the mid-palate sugars with trace acidity creeping into the aftertaste. The texture is a delight - so thick you could pour it over ice cream. 25% Alc./Vol.

Averna Amaro Siciliano Digestif Liqueur (700ml)
    Sicily, ITALY
    $54. 99
    Bottle
    $659.88 Dozen
    ABV: 29%
    Closure: Cork

A speciality of Sicily, Averna’s secret recipe was founded by monks over 200 years ago. Averna has an unmistakable taste that comes from the unique combination of herbs and roots. Its method of preparation determines its full flavoured herbal qualities and distinctive aroma.

Tasting note: The deep sienna brown colour with a gold ochre hue appears slightly viscous in the glass. Smells like 'Chinnoti" with an attractive sarsaparilla / quinine combination, followed by hints of dried citrus peel. Viscous entry follows with reasonable intensity, becoming semi sweet at mid palate before finishing only mildly bitter. The ABV has dropped on this in recent times, and while we prefer some of the higher strength Amaros for all round concentration and added bite, this value offering is a pleasant way to finish a meal, every time. 29% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Inky soy-mahogany. Flowers, fresh herbs, licorice and mince meat. Rich texture. Lovely sensuous palate of wild, alpine fresh spice and succulent flavors. Very concentrated with a firm, yet silky presence on the palate and into the very deep, lingering finish. 32.0% alc./vol.

    Baileys Irish Cream Liqueur (700ml)
    Dublin, IRELAND
    $41. 99
    Bottle
    $503.88 Dozen
    ABV: 17%

“Smooth, mellow, irresistible” - Baileys is a natural marriage of fresh Irish cream, Irish Whiskey and other spirits. Appearing first in the 1970's it quickly became popular with 'experimental drinkers' due to its mild alcohol level (17% alc/vol). Many imitations followed suit, capitolising on the brands successful formula which prevented the cream curdling with the alcohol.

Enjoy Baileys straight, on the rocks with ice-cream or in “Irish coffee”. Avoid using Baileys with acidic or citrus drinks and mixers – the cream component of Baileys reacts badly with these. The technical research behind Baileys has provided the product with an acceptable shelf life, however, refrigeration after opening is recommended as is shaking the bottle thoroughly before serving.

Other reviews... Bailey's, the number one selling liqueur in the world, proves this yet again in our tastings with its lush, fresh cream character, gentle nuttiness, and perfectly balanced dash of Irish whiskey... Milky manilla color. Nutty, toasty, nougat aromas are inviting. A smooth satiny entry leads to a lightly sweet, plush medium-to full-bodied palate with balanced layers of cream, toasted nuts, brown spice, and a breath of lightly-aged whiskey. Finishes with a creamy, slightly spiced fade. Classically balanced and effortlessly drinkable.

Mint, which is to be found in its wild state in many parts of the world, has been grown domestically since ancient Egyptian times. The Japanese have known ‘Menthol” for at least two thousand years. It is one of the most respected medicinal plants – as a tonic, stimulant and antispasmodic. It also has strong aromatic properties and last but not least, freshens the mouth.

The digestive properties of some types of mint have also long been known and the most widely used species in liqueurs is Labiatae which belongs to the garden mint family. The use of the term “Crème” is applied to liqueurs made solely from their namesake – e.g. “Crème de Menthe”. More generally it is used to denote the predominant flavour of a particular drink. This Crème de Menthe is one of the highlights of the Baitz range.

Baitz liqueurs have won more awards than any other maker in Australia. Their commitment to excellence and quality is un-equalled. The judges in the 19th International Wine & Spirits Show in the United Kingdom recognised this with Baitz Cherry Brandy awarded the 1988 Quest International Trophy for the Best Liqueur (Category Worldwide). Baitz Cherry Brandy also received a Gold Award and Baitz Creme de Menthe and Baitz Creme de Cacao both received Silver Awards. The highly acclaimed 'Lillie Trophy' in Melbourne, Australia, which was first awarded in 1951, has been won by Baitz almost every year. 23% Alc./Vol.

Oranges, the exotic fruit that forms the basis of all Triple Sec, were originally from the Indies and China. The crusades introduced them to Europe from Palestine via Portugal. The original orange “curacao” was made with fruit from the Island of Curacao. However, the term now embraces a wide variety of liqueurs made from oranges and other produce as well. Amsterdam Curacaos are perhaps the most famous and highly regarded. (The Bols company comes to mind.)

Orange Curacao is created using only the peel of the orange, soaking it in water followed by distillation and rectification. Baitz produce a good example of the style. The colour is burnished orange, typical of the fruit, with a pleasant fruity, fragrant nose. The palate is luscious and juicy. 28% alc./vol.

Crème de Cacao or chocolate liqueur is manufactured by maceration or percolation of cacao (cocoa)beans followed by distillation and sweetening. As with coffee, the best results are obtained by blending beans from different areas. It is available as either a colourless or brown liquid, the brown version often containing vanilla.

The history of cocoa and chocolate is well known to date back to the Aztecs of South America. The ‘plumed serpent’ is said to have bought it back from the ‘Lost Paradise.’ By consuming it one attained universal knowledge and wisdom. It came into vogue in Europe as a liqueur from the seventeenth century on, often being drunk through a thick layer of cream floating on the surface.

Baitz Crème de Cacao has been blended with Australian Brandy and other spirits, rounded off by the addition of vanilla bean extract and spices.

Baitz liqueurs have won more awards than any other maker in Australia. Their commitment to excellence and quality is unequalled. Other reviews... Delicate, lightly honeyed and not overly sweet scents with a buttery/creamy quality. Palate entry is gooey, concentrated, chewy and numbingly sweet; the midpalate phase heightens the impressions of the entry. Traditionally, Tyrolean farmers have turned fruit, herbs, roots and berries into spirits, 'elixirs of life' and household remedies. The Baumann company preserves the knowledge and insights from the past in the creation of their speciality range of herbal spirits. Herb gatherers and farming specialists supply plants, roots, seeds and berries from the alpine valleys and mountain pastures of Tyrol. These are then prepared in alcohol. By careful maceration and distillation, the vitality of each unique ingredient is preserved. The "Devil's Herb" Liqueur is a full strength "Fire Liqueur" offering the option of lowering the extraordinarily high alcohol volume (50%) by igniting your drink. Becherovka will be well known amongst visitors to Eastern Europe. Now this Czech specialty has arrived in Australia. Made to a secret herbal recipe reputed to be of ancient origins, this delicious aperitif is served in restaurants and bars in Prague and across Europe.
Josef Becher began producing the liquor in his pharmacy in 1807, selling it as digestive drops under the name of Carlsbader English Bitter. Just before his death, Josef entrusted the recipe for the beverage's production to his son and heir, Johann. Johann Becher soon proved to be a guardian for the recipe but also an excellent businessman. He built a new factory, equipped it with modern machines and, in 1876, commissioned his brother-in-law Karel Laub from Karlovy Vary to design flat bottles with their own labels which are used to this day. At that time, Becherovka was sold under the name of English Bitter or also Becher Bitter. At the end of the 19th century, Johann's son Gustav Becher unified the name and registered the trademark "Johann Becher", the brand being under threat from cheap and imperfect imitations.

Rudolf Becher, the next successor to the throne of the family empire, was responsible for the Becherovka repute reaching beyond the borders of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. During this period the drink’s name settled on Becher Bitter, for the first time appearing on the familiar yellow-blue label. Thanks to its supplying the army with special military rations, Becherovka’s popularity and production increased in World War I. The disintegration of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy in 1918 gave birth to an independent Czechoslovakia – and with it the birth of "Becherovka." Between the wars, the market again blossomed and Becherovka survived World War II. In 1945 the family company was nationalized and remained in the state's hands until 1997. Today, the Jan Becher company and its flagship Becherovka are part of Pernod Ricard, the world's third-largest producer of distilled liquors and wine.

Today, only two persons at the Karlovy Vary factory know the whole secret of Becherovka production. Once a week, they prepare the mixture from many kinds of herbs and spices. About three fourths of the herbs and spices come from abroad; some selected kinds grow in the vicinity of Karlovy Vary. The finished mixture is placed into sacks made from natural material and immersed in alcohol for one week. Becherovka matures in the barrels for about two months. Then the contents of the barrels are put together and blended before bottling.

Becherovka is typically mixed with tonic water and a squeeze of lime, tasting something like bitters in tonic water, but, of course, more alcoholic. On its own, chilled over ice, the prominent flavour is cinnamon which lingers with excellent length. While being sweet, Becherovka is not cloying and finishes clean and fresh. 38%Alc./Vol.

    ITALY
    $49. 99
    Bottle
    $599.88 Dozen
    ABV: 30%

The Beltion brand was born after the second world war when Giacomo Gianandrea began selling his production of almond milk. The name (and the milk) soon became popular throughout Southern Italy. Fast forward to 1995, when his children set up a modern operation with a view to extend the brand to a wider range of cordials and spirits from the classic Italian repertoire. These include Sambuca, Anice, Amaro and an unusual expression of a liqueur standard, 'Opera Beltion White Amaretto'.

Tasting note: Viscous, opalescent, pale emerald green. Smells of ripe lemon - not confected - with some peel characteristics upping the freshness. A light to medium bodied, semi-sweet liqueur with lemon barley sugar flavours and a warming, medium fresh finish. 30% Alc./Vol.
