    Agwa Liqueur (700ml)
    Didam, NETHERLANDS
    $73. 99
    Bottle
    $887.88 Dozen
    ABV: 30%
Distilled and produced in Holland, AGWA de Bolivia is an "Alco-Jolt" made from the Bolivian coca leaf and contains Guarana and ginseng.
In 1820 the first Bolivian coca leaf liqueur was manufactured by the De Medici in Bologna, Italy and sold throughout Europe. Rudyard Kipling said the powerful elixir as being made "from the clippings and shavings of angels wings". The product was removed from the market with the banning of cocaine as rudimentary distilling did not remove cocaine. Today bales of Bolivian Coca leaf are shipped under armed guard to Amsterdam where they are distilled and an exact maceration and herbal extraction technique guarantee the removal of the cocaine to standards acceptable to European and US authorities. An extremely distinctive peppery herbal base is then blended with other herbs like guarana & ginseng to balance the taste and augment the effect.
For over 4000 years among the native Andean population the coca leaf has been used for ancient rituals and for everyday gift giving. Today it is drunk as a tea and chewed for hours by farmers and miners. The result is similar to a prolonged caffeine or tobacco buzz. But it's more than that. It improves stamina, is a sacred symbol central to community life and provides essential nutrients. 100 grams of coca would more than satisfy the daily-recommended allowance of calcium, iron, phosphorous, vitamin A and riboflavin. The World Health Organisation and the UN's Inter Regional Crime and Justice research institutes cocaine project maintains that coca users show none of the classic signs of addiction. In fact coca is not a major component of cocaine as only 0.5% of the alkaloid cocaine is found in coca and 41 chemicals are needed to extract cocaine from the coca leaf.

Guarana is the extract from the seeds of the common Amazonian climber Paullina Cupana. The South American Guarani Indians make a paste from the crushed seeds, cassava flour and water. The paste is rolled into cylinders and dried. The residue is then grated and the shavings are dissolved in hot sweet water. Typically the resultant brew contains about 5% caffeine; British tea contains 0.03% and coffee up to 0.08%. Caffeine is an alkaloid. An alkaloid is defined as any of various nitrogen containing organic bases obtained from plants. Caffeine is one of three types of alkaloids, the others being thophyliine and theobromine. Caffeine has a stimulating effect on the central nervous system, heart, blood vessels and kidneys. The positive effects that have been described in people who use caffeine include motor performance, decreased fatigue, enhanced sensory activity and increased alertness. However, caffeine intake may also produce such negative effects as irritability, nervousness or anxiety, headaches and insomnia. Caffeine acts rapidly. About100mg of caffeine starts to affect you in about 10 minutes, reaches its peak in an hour and lingers in your system for at least 3 hours.

True Ginseng is the source of a stimulant and supposed aphrodisiac that is extracted from the roots. It is native to China although closely related species, American Ginseng, occurs in Eastern North America and is sometimes substituted for the Chinese variety. Ginseng has a sweetly aromatic flavour. The basis of Ginseng's action is believed to be due to certain chemical agents in it that increase the brains adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) activity without involving the adrenal glands. A generalised mental arousal is thereby effected.

Leading authorities for Mayan and Inca studies have challenged Agwa's claim to be the world's first "Psycho-Active" spirit drink. Neither the claims nor the effect are disputed but a leading Mayan Foundation contends that, "Herbal based beverages were at the centre of practices by Mayan elders. Among their people these elders were great men and visionaries. The visions gave direction to the tribe and were the result of taking a spirit fermented from herbs and then flavoured with honey." This may indeed be a precursor to Agwa, however, the Mayan elders didn't actually drink the spirit. They filled a funnel shaped gourd with the liquid and inserted it where the sun doesn't shine. This is not among the recommended ways to use Agwa...

Tasting Note: Translucent emerald green color. Men's cologne-like aromas of herbs and sweet fruits in the nose. A thick, supple entry leads to sweet medium-to full-bodied palate with candied lime and green tea elements meshed with ginger and light herbal notes. Finishes with a sweet, citrus fruit glide and a noticeable, caffeine-like "head rush" a moment later. 30% Alc./Vol.International Review of Spirits Award: Silver Medal

    Tete Japanese Botanicals Liqueur (720ml)
    JAPAN
    $99. 99
    Bottle
    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 12%

Tete botanical liqueur is released once annually so stocks are always fairly limited. In its creation, Ume plums are soaked in single-distillation pure shochu for one year along with nine Japanese botanicals: a piquancy springs from slowly macerated sansho and ginger root, while herbal elements come to the fore with wintergreen and a perfume of ume flower. Mandarin provides both brightness and acidity. Spicy cinnamon imparts light, woody notes and dried bonito heightens and unifies Tete's botanicals. This myriad of flavours results in a complex liqueur with a mouthwatering finish that lingers. 12% Alc./Vol.

This traditional liqueur us made from matcha (green tea) harvested from the famed production area of Uji in Kyoto prefecture. Umami elements from a Junmai sake base accentuate the savoury tea component, while the clever addition of yuzu adds a playful citrus note that elevates the finish. The result is an elegant balance of savoury, sweet and sour, delightful on its own and as a cocktail mixer. 6% Alc./Vol.

Amaro Montenegro, "the liqueur of the virtues" , was created in 1885 thanks to the lengthy, impassioned experiments of a famous distiller and herbalist, Stanislao Cobianchi. The name "Montenegro" is a dedication to the beautiful princess Elena of Montenegro, who was engaged to Victor Emanuel III. In its over 100 years of history, Amaro Montenegro has seen its success grow continuously up to the present day, now being one of the leading brands on the Italian market. Produced from a blend of over 40 different herbs from all over the world Montenegro involves a distinct soaking and distillation process which results in a liquor sweet in taste with a slightly bitter finish. Appreciated as a digestive for consumption after meals, with soda, on ice or even hot. 23%Alc./Vol.

Tasting Notes "Displays early botanical scents of orange peel, fresh not dried coriander, red cherry, pekoe tea cucumber. Palate entry is sweet at first then it quickly turns mildly bitter and botanical; by midpalate, there's a slight sweetness of tangerine/mandarin peel. Aftertaste is moderately bittersweet and citrusy.

Ancho Reyes Verde Chile Poblano Liqueur (700ml)
    MEXICO
    $89. 99
    Bottle
    $1079.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%
Upping the ante on the original family recipe, this makes the most of fresh, hand-picked poblanos, some of which are fire roasted to add more complexity and flavour. The chiles are then macerated in neutral cane spirit for half a year. Enjoy neat or spice up your cocktails.

Tasting note: Polished brass. Engaging, authentic aromas of fresh sliced capsicum / chile / Asian stir fry and hints of green olive. Sweet, creamy entry. Middle stage highlights grilled vegetables (capsicum / zucchini) and accents appealing pepper heat. Concludes drier with lively chillie spice, tobasco sauce and white pepper. Great persistence. Complex and skilfully crafted. 40% Alc./Vol.

Ancho Reyes Ancho Chile Liqueur (700ml)
    MEXICO
    $89. 99
    Bottle
    $1079.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%
Made with ancho chiles (aka dried poblano chiles) according to a recipe for a similar spirit enjoyed back in 1920s Mexico. One of very few chile infused beverages to hit the market.

Tasting note: Deep copper penny colour with some sediment evident. Unusual aromas of Thai-chilli sauce, sliced zucchini and mild wasabi, but neither prickly or hot. Palate is more convincing - true to style with semi-sweet chilli-sauce flavours and genuine heat. Finishes broad, slightly flat, with hints of cinnamon and lingering chile pepper warmth. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Though it's made with ancho chiles, this liqueur is modest on the spice scale. Caramel-y brown in the glass, look for a lightly herbaceous aroma similar to root beer and rounded flavors that mix caramel and cocoa with raisin and cinnamon heat, with a faint smokiness on the finish. Particularly harmonious mixed in cocktails with brown spirits like whiskey.

Averna Amaro Siciliano Digestif Liqueur (700ml)
    Sicily, ITALY
    $54. 99

    $659.88 Dozen
    ABV: 29%
    Closure: Cork

A speciality of Sicily, Averna’s secret recipe was founded by monks over 200 years ago. Averna has an unmistakable taste that comes from the unique combination of herbs and roots. Its method of preparation determines its full flavoured herbal qualities and distinctive aroma.

Tasting note: The deep sienna brown colour with a gold ochre hue appears slightly viscous in the glass. Smells like 'Chinnoti" with an attractive sarsaparilla / quinine combination, followed by hints of dried citrus peel. Viscous entry follows with reasonable intensity, becoming semi sweet at mid palate before finishing only mildly bitter. The ABV has dropped on this in recent times, and while we prefer some of the higher strength Amaros for all round concentration and added bite, this value offering is a pleasant way to finish a meal, every time. 29% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Inky soy-mahogany. Flowers, fresh herbs, licorice and mince meat. Rich texture. Lovely sensuous palate of wild, alpine fresh spice and succulent flavors. Very concentrated with a firm, yet silky presence on the palate and into the very deep, lingering finish. 32.0% alc./vol.

    Becherovka Liqueur (700ml)

Becherovka will be well known amongst visitors to Eastern Europe. Now this Czech specialty has arrived in Australia. Made to a secret herbal recipe reputed to be of ancient origins, this delicious aperitif is served in restaurants and bars in Prague and across Europe.
Josef Becher began producing the liquor in his pharmacy in 1807, selling it as digestive drops under the name of Carlsbader English Bitter. Just before his death, Josef entrusted the recipe for the beverage's production to his son and heir, Johann. Johann Becher soon proved to be a guardian for the recipe but also an excellent businessman. He built a new factory, equipped it with modern machines and, in 1876, commissioned his brother-in-law Karel Laub from Karlovy Vary to design flat bottles with their own labels which are used to this day. At that time, Becherovka was sold under the name of English Bitter or also Becher Bitter. At the end of the 19th century, Johann's son Gustav Becher unified the name and registered the trademark "Johann Becher", the brand being under threat from cheap and imperfect imitations.

Rudolf Becher, the next successor to the throne of the family empire, was responsible for the Becherovka repute reaching beyond the borders of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. During this period the drink’s name settled on Becher Bitter, for the first time appearing on the familiar yellow-blue label. Thanks to its supplying the army with special military rations, Becherovka’s popularity and production increased in World War I. The disintegration of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy in 1918 gave birth to an independent Czechoslovakia – and with it the birth of "Becherovka." Between the wars, the market again blossomed and Becherovka survived World War II. In 1945 the family company was nationalized and remained in the state's hands until 1997. Today, the Jan Becher company and its flagship Becherovka are part of Pernod Ricard, the world's third-largest producer of distilled liquors and wine.

Today, only two persons at the Karlovy Vary factory know the whole secret of Becherovka production. Once a week, they prepare the mixture from many kinds of herbs and spices. About three fourths of the herbs and spices come from abroad; some selected kinds grow in the vicinity of Karlovy Vary. The finished mixture is placed into sacks made from natural material and immersed in alcohol for one week. Becherovka matures in the barrels for about two months. Then the contents of the barrels are put together and blended before bottling.

Becherovka is typically mixed with tonic water and a squeeze of lime, tasting something like bitters in tonic water, but, of course, more alcoholic. On its own, chilled over ice, the prominent flavour is cinnamon which lingers with excellent length. While being sweet, Becherovka is not cloying and finishes clean and fresh. 38%Alc./Vol.

    Benedictine D.O.M Liqueur (700ml)
    Fecamp, FRANCE
    $77. 99
    Bottle
    $935.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Everyone knows this squatty bottle with the D.O.M. label and the big seal of (what used to be) scarlet wax. The D.O.M. title, "Deo Optimo Maximo" is latin and translates as "To God most good, most great."The original recipe of this famous elixir, created by a monk, Don Bernardo Vincelli in 1510, was said to have revived fatigued brothers and even warned off epidemics.

Still made by French Benedictine monks at Fecamp, Dom Benedictine has as its basis the blending of 27 different plants and spices from five continents. These include a blend of herbs, spices and an infusion of saffron, honey, thyme, tea and caramel. The quality of ingredients and the maturation of Benedictine in oak casks for three months combine to produce a truly unique spirit. The original therapeutic function of DOM continues to this day, and in the Far East, it is taken by miners for rheumatism and as a tonic for pregnant women.Dom is not ideal as a mixer, as it lacks character and loses its delicate, heathery flavour. Try over ice. 40% alc/vol.

Other reviews... The delicately herbal bouquet is an unusual combination of earth and flowers; one of the more seductive, unique and piquant liqueur perfumes in existence. In the mouth, the full texture coats the tongue as sweet flavors of honey, citrus peel, rosemary, sage and basil harmonize perfectly. Aftertaste is silky-smooth and extended. Magnificent. Discontinued in 2015. Now available again with a new presentation in 2021.
Originally a family of industrialists, the Bisleris have produced this very famous Italian tonic since 1881. It is essentially an aperitif in a herb flavoured, fortified wine base. Its producers recommend its as a blood tonic. Each 30 ml shot contains 5 mg of Iron [from Ammonium Iron (lll) Citrate] and when taken at any time of day, but preferably before a meal, is claimed to maintain normal blood. Ferro China also makes a pleasant drink mixed with mineral water.

One member of the Bisleri family, Franco Bordoni-Bisleri (born 1913), was a famous Italian flying ace. The badge on the Ferro-China bottles was a lion so this was the image painted on most of his aircraft alongside the word “Robur” meaning “strength” in Latin. No doubt his fame helped to popularise the brand. 21% Alc./Vol.

    ITALY
    $89. 99

    $1079.88 Dozen
    ABV: 28%

Essentially a minted version of Fernet Branca, being based on the same recipe as the original including an assortment of 40 ingredients such as aloe, gentian, chamomile, angelica, chincona, colombo root, chinese rhubarb, myrrh, peppermint, saffron and iris. Branca Menta adds to the equation more sugar and peppermint oil. Recommended with a splash of soda over ice. 28% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... While Fernet-Branca dates to 1845, Branca-Menta was released in the 1960s, the result of younger drinkers who were putting mint syrup in their Fernet. Take standard Fernet-Branca and add peppermint and menthol, and you’ve got Menta. However, the current recipe is much lower in alcohol. The mint is immediately evident on the nose, and it brings out a cocoa character in the aroma that ultimately smells a lot like mint chocolate. Sweetness is evident as you take a sip — this is no ultra-bitter fernet but rather a more modern styling — and the palate hits like a mint-flavored glass of espresso, heavily dosed with sugar. That heavy sweetness makes Menta feel less refreshing than it should be, though the peppermint element is at least quite fun. - drinkhacker.com

    FRANCE
    $99. 99

    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 43%

One of the liqueur immortals, Chartreuse is the product of monks from the Carthusian order who originated the product at their establishment in the French Alps called “Grande Chartreuse”. Unfortunately, this order was banished from France to Spain just after the turn of the century, and at Tarragona they again set up with their secret formula compounded of elixirs from 130 odd and rare herbs, water, sugar and fine spirits. (The production has since returned to France.) Green Chartreuse (55%alc./vol.) is most pungent and expensive. Only three monks know how to blend and distill the recipe. They are also the only ones who know which plants they have to macerate to produce the natural green and yellow colours.

Yellow Chatreuse, first produced in 1838, is just as good (43% alc./vol.), though milder, sweeter and more aromatic. It is not only invaluable as a liqueur with coffee, but is the final decoration for a Gin daisy and other delicate drinks. The much sought after White Chartreuse, the sweetest version of the three, also exists or did exist. Whatever the case, it's unavailable in Australia. Chartreuse is most often drunk on its own or with ice. Alternatively, it makes a refreshing Summer sipper mixed with tonic.

Fresh, young, wild thyme is picked at the beginning of summer and combined with other botanicals including angelica and sage. It's recommended served on ice, drizzled over a lemon sorbet, with coffee at the end of a meal, or in cooking a grilled chicken or in a sauce accompanying rabbit. We can't wait to further experiment with this superb new discovery!

Tasting note: Pours a viscous pale yellow green with a pale straw hue. The top note of fresh cut thyme subsides to reveal nuances of aniseed, peppermint and some faintly resinous notes (beeswax?) making for a complex bouquet. Entry is silky, medium sweet; expanding into a semi sweet yet delightfully fresh herbal / anise combo with notes of thyme and sage returning at the finish. Perfect balance. Concludes dry with subtle herb flavours demonstrating terrific persistence. 40% Alc./Vol.

A traditional digestif from the French Alps that started life as a medical elixir capable of "remedying over 46 diseases". The company which produces this liqueur was established in 1810 in Stonsdorf near the source of the river Elbe in Silesia. Today the business is run from Hamburg, at the other end of the river. Christian Koerner was an experienced distiller and when he took over a brewery in Stonsdorf he was already studying a number of curative herbal drinks produced informally in the locale. Echt Stonsdorfer was his creation based on what he had learned. The formula for the drink is unusual in that it is based on fruit juice (from wood-blueberries) which comprises about 10% of the mix. There are 43 ingredients in all which yield a full–bodied, bitter fruit flavour.

Fernet Branca has been produced according to a secret family prescription at the Fratelli Branca Distillery in Milan since 1845. Over forty aromatic herbs, blossoms and spices such as enzian, safron, myrrh and camomile are used in its production. Although Fernet goes well over ice or with gin, it's often prescribed as a drink to prevent hangovers. According to Esquire's Handbook for Hosts from 1949, when mixed with rye, a few dashes of Pernod, and a lump of ice, Fernet Branca makes for an ideal pick-me-up. The health-enhancing properties of Fernet have made it the favoured "digestivo" at dinner tables across the world; traditionally served straight up at the end of a meal, it aids in digestion and cleanses the palate. This versatile liqueur can also be used to spike espresso to make the famous "caffè corretto" (literally, "spiked coffee") which is served all over the world. In recent years, as a new generation has discovered this invigorating liqueur, many have begun to serve it with cola, fruit juice, Grenadine, Energy drinks and even beer!

Tasting Notes: Dark brown with an orange cast. Fresh peppermint aromas are very distinctive. A huge blast of menthol assaults the palate with a drying, bitter herb finish. Very dry and concentrated. 40%Alc./Vol.RATED: 91 points (Exceptional)

Fireball Cinnamon Flavoured Canadian Whisky Liqueur (700ml)
    CANADA
    $57. 99
    Bottle
    $695.88 Dozen
    ABV: 33%
"If you haven't tried Fireball Cinnamon Whisky yet, just imagine what it would be like to get a Chuck Norris roundhouse kick to the face if his legs were on fire and tasted like cinnamon. Like it, love it, shoot it-- your dad's whisky never tasted so smooth. What happens next is up to you... So goes the rather colourful introduction to this new arrival.

Rumor has it that the original Fireball Whisky recipe was forged sometime in the mid-1980s during the coldest winter Canada had ever seen, when a mixologist turned mad scientist accidentally created a permanent solution to frostbite. The concoction slowly and quietly made its way around North America for a few years, a sort of secret handshake between veteran bartenders. "Word got out", say the producers, "and now we are just trying to make it fast enough to keep the fire burnin’."

Tasting note: Smells of candied cinnamon stick or cinnamon doughnuts. Time in the glass brings out hints of ginger and clove. Silky, sweet and viscous; opens with cinnamon strudel and finishes with a warming cinnamon and pepper kick. Heat lingers. The label doesn't lie- Hot stuff! 33% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Pale amber color. Bold cinnamon red hot and pine cone aroma with a lightly syrupy sweet medium body and a pure honey and hot cinnamon and root beer candy finish. Cinnamon delivered as promised, but where's the whisky.

    ITALY

    Bottle
    $839.88 Dozen
    ABV: 42.3%

Galliano, properly known as 'Liquore Galliano L'Autentico', is a sweet herbal liqueur created by Italian distiller and brandy producer Arturo Vaccari of Tuscany in 1896. Vaccari named it after the “impossibly handsome war hero” Major Giuseppe Galliano, a member of the Italian Expeditionary Corps in the Italian-Abyssinian conflict of 1895-6, as a tribute to his heroic stand at the fort of Enda Jesus where he held out for forty four days before being ordered to surrender. The liqueurs vivid golden yellow colour, currently derived from Tartrazine was used to depict the Californian Gold Rush; and more importantly, reminded the numerous Italian prospectors of home.

The distillation process is much like that use to create fine perfume. Forty herbs, roots, flowers and other botanicals, including key ingredients like vanilla and anise comprise the recipe. Seven infusions, seven distillations, two blending stages and a six month marrying period are involved in the production.

    S.Vittoria d'Alba, ITALY
    $99. 99
    Bottle
    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 43.5%

This is an imitation of the original Goldwasser produced in 1598 by the German firm, "Danzig". The recipe did not always include gold flakes. These were added when it became thought that gold was valuable in the treatment of certain diseases. Gold is of course totally inert - it is quite harmless to use in food products and has since been found not to impart the benefits the alchemists attributed to it. Tiny flecks of beaten gold are still added purely for the appearance and to maintain tradition. There also exists or existed Danzig Silberwasser, however it is unknown if the liqueur remains in production.

Originally produced from aniseed and caraway, this version from Goldschlager tastes like a butterscotch schnapps with a distinct cinnamon background. Always serve chilled.

    Meletti Fernet (750ml)
    ITALY
    $79. 99
    Bottle
    $959.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Centuries-old and rooted in medicine, Fernet are a kind of sub-category of Amaro that are typically less sweet, or more bittersweet. Like Amaros, they're usually consumed at the end of a meal to aid digestion and are flavoured with locally grown plants and herbs so as to represent the flavours of a given region. The Branca brand has long held the top position in the Fernet world, but that hasn't stopped countless distilleries, both in Italy and beyond from making proprietary variations of their own.  Meletti's expression is described as a 'moderately bitter' style, offering hints of dark chocolate, coffee and mint, finishing with bitter gentian root, while the ingredients are said to include cardamom, myrrh, rhubarb, chamomile and saffron, among others. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... A stomach settler and a breath freshener, this liqueur is full-on minty from first sip straight through to exhale. The moderately bitter midpalate offers hints of dark chocolate, espresso and allspice. There's a passing resemblance to thin-mint cookies if you squint. 90 points - Kara Newman - wineenthusiast.com

It can also substitute when vermouths are called for in drinks like Manhattans. 32% Alc./Vol.

Nonino Amaro Riserva Digestif Liqueur (700ml)
    Udine, Friuli, ITALY
    $139. 99
    Bottle
    $1679.88 Dozen
    ABV: 35%

'Riserva' is the premium expression of grandfather Antonio Nonino’s ancient Amaro recipe, softened by aging in barriques and small casks for 24 months. Extended maturation was something of a family tradition - partly to create an alternative style and partly because the cost of stainless steel vats was prohibitive. The resulting deep gold coloured Amaro sports an aged-grappa like bouquet that's fresher than most. Soft aromas of fruit bread, dried apricots, raisins, quinine and a whisp of white pepper follow in a silky, medium bodied palate that's fruity and zesty more than bittersweet. The grappa base spirit comes through, while the finish ups the complexity adding suggestions of chamomile tea, gentian, bergamot, apple mint and warming spices. Being a lighter, less assertive style means this is both accessible and versatile. Pair it with cream based desserts, cheeses or Tiramisu and chocolate. Also recommended in an Old-Fashioned, but leave other bitters out. The beautiful, decoratively labeled 'apothecary' style bottle is an added bonus. 35% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Strong notes of eau-de-vie are wrapped up in toasted spice aromatics of dried blood orange peel, sandalwood, and cassia bark. On the palate, this is quite dry, with notes of kola nut, pine, and orange liqueur. The finish is wonderfully complex and long. 96 points - Ultimate Spirits Challenge 2022

The Nonino family have devoted themselves to the art of distillation since 1897 with each generation actively improving and innovating to change the perception of ‘Grappa’, Italy’s ancient and best known distillate. In 1973 Nonino became the first producer to create a single varietal Grappa, using the rare and indigenous Picolit grape, setting a trend which the rest of Italy’s distillers followed. This was to be the beginning of a campaign for the preservation of their local Friulian varieties. In 1984, Nonino again set the standard with their ‘ÙE’, distilling from whole grapes to preserve each varieties unique aroma and flavour.
