Flavoured Vodka

Flavoured Vodkas have been produced for centuries. Initially, extra ingredients were added to mask the harsh taste of rough cuts in early distillates. Nowadays flavouring vodka is a mark of the distiller's skill. The best examples offer a pure, non-confected representation of the key note flavour - not so easily achieved, as many fall into the 'too sweet' trap. Flavoured vodkas are now in vogue with several celebrity affiliated brands leaving a mark on popular culture. Their convenience and versatility as mixers means there's a steady demand, and the flavour range currently available is better than ever. Click here to learn more about Vodka.

Vodka production is not a foreign concept in Tasmania, with almost all current whisky distilleries producing the adaptable spirit in order to maintain cash flow while their whisky matures. Many with great success. And why not? Tasmania boasts some of the cleanest air and purest water in the world, the latter being essential for any successful vodka. Add some of the best brewing barley to the mix and it will come as no surprise why 666 Vodka was conceived. It was a gold medal winner at the 2010 San Francisco world spirits competition, the first Australian Vodka to win this award. It's created from 100% Tasmanian barley, triple distilled in copper pot stills and charcoal filtered to rid of any impurities and finally cut down to 40% ABV with rainwater collected from Cape Grim.

The brand has recently combined efforts with the Tassie Dairy industry to create "Autumn Butter", a deliciously creamy vodka sensation! 40% Alc./Vol.

Everybody knows that the Russian and Polish national spirit, made from rye malt and often potato starch, is vodka. However, one of the best value premium vodkas on todays market actually comes from Sweden. This superb, neutral vodka first appeared in 1979. Distilled from grain grown in the fields of Southern Sweden, Absolut was conceived as a pure product with its own peculiar Swedish identity. The distinctive bottle design was inspired by an antique medicine bottle, while the minimalist logo and absolutely clear glass emphasise the simplicity and purity of the product.

Flavouring vodka is an age old Swedish tradition. Absolut Raspberri is the latest addition to the Absolut flavoured vodka range. Feel the intense burst of natural raspberry blended with the finest vodka distilled from grain grown in the rich fields of Southern Sweden.

Tasting note: The opening perfume is extremely raspberry-like; aeration tones down the jammy intensity a little as the bouquet turns seed-like. The palate entry is fruity, mildly sweet, ripe and pleasant; at midpalate there's a slight embers-on-the-tongue warmth that accompanies the ripe raspberry flavor. Ends comfortably fruity and acidic. 40% Alc./Vol.
    Rating: 85-89 points.  - www.wineenthusiast.com

Other reviews... Clear. Vibrant raspberry lozenge an pond water aromas. A brisk, buoyant entry leads to a dry-yet-fruity light-to-medium body of spicy raspberry jam and pink peppercorn flavors. Finishes with a raspberry powder and talc fade.

    Absolut Citron Flavoured Vodka (700ml)
    Ahus, SWEDEN
    $52. 99
    Bottle
    $635.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Flavouring vodka is an age old Swedish tradition and this example bears the distinctive flavour of citrus fruits. To produce Absolut Citron, an alcoholic base is made from locally grown wheat grain and continuously distilled to produce a high strength spirit. The spirit is then filtered through charcoal and transferred to stainless steel tanks so flavours stay neutral. Natural flavouring is finally added using fruit extracts from Lemons, Limes, Mandarins and Grapefruits. The result is a dry and zesty spirit with a curious sweet/tart interplay of lively citrus flavours.

Tasting note: Pristine appearance. Lovely, clean and intense aroma of tangerine is full and squeaky tart in the first whiffs; aeration serves to bring out zesty, spot-on scents of lemon juice and lemon peel. In the mouth, the crisp, razor-edged lemon taste dominates from entry into midpalate. Finishes tangy, pleasantly tart and irresistibly fresh. A superb, prototypical flavored vodka. Best Buy. 40% alc./vol.

    Classic Cocktail: Cosmopolitan
The Cosmopolitan was allegedly created in 1975 by Neal Murray at a steak house in Minneapolis called the Cork & Cleaver. As with the origins of most cocktails, this claim is disputed by a number of sources. Informally referred to as a “Cosmo”, the Cosmopolitan first gained popularity in the 1990s, and was further popularized among young women by its frequent mention on the the television program 'Sex and the City'.

Whereas most vodkas are produced from common starches such as wheat or potatoes, Ciroc is made from Ugni Blanc grapes left on the vine for extended ripening. The fruit is sourced from Gaillac in the Southwest of France, (nestled between Roussillon and the Pyrenees in the South and the Gorges of the Tarn in the East). After harvesting, the juice is pressed, cold fermented then distilled five times - the fifth time using specially-designed, traditional copper pot-stills. 37.5% Alc./Vol.

Saint Felix Yuzu & Green Tea Spirit (700ml)
    Victoria, AUSTRALIA
    $69. 99
    Bottle
    $839.88 Dozen
    ABV: 35%

Yuzu is a yellow citrus fruit with a tart juice, commonly used by chefs to flavour both savoury and sweet dishes. It’s known for its role in the popular Japanese Ponzu sauce and is also made into vinegar. The yuzu orchards and fruit-soaked baths of Japan’s alpine region set the scene for this spirit. Its creation involves cold and pot distillation to extract the yuzu and sencha green tea keynotes. The result is a light bodied, fresh and natural spirit akin to a flavoured vodka, less the confected sweetness of some brands. The pleasantly tart character of the citrus is captured alongside hints of ginger and jasmine adding warmth and complexity. The flavours lose definition with minimal dilution, but on the flipside, you could sip this straight. Keep it simple with a few cubes of ice and a slice of lemon. 35% Alc./Vol.

The only place in the world where the bison grass grows in the wild, in small clumps scattered all over the glades and meadows, is the Biaolowieka Forest, acknowledged to be the last primeval forest left in Europe and where there are thousands of European bison living free. The wild-growing grass must be harvested in good weather and at the proper time – early in the summer, when the grass has reached the proper height and colour but is still young and not yellowed. At that moment it is most aromatic. The grass is harvested by hand. Then it is allowed to dry naturally in the breeze and sunshine and is bound in bunches, cut to the required length and delivered to the distilleries. In the distillery the grass is spread on screens and vodka is made to flow through the grass several times to make an aromatic essence. During the next stage this bison grass extract is mixed with pure vodka until the right colour, aroma and taste are obtained, following the traditional recipe. The ready vodka is left for several days to stabilise and harmonise. Experienced technicians and tasters monitor every step of the process. Finally the vodka is filtered and the final product is bottled, with a blade of bison grass in every bottle for decoration.

Two species of creatures have a special liking for bison grass: bison and… hunters. The first look for it in the meadows of the Bialowieska Forest, where it is very abundant. The second look for it rather in the liquid form introduced long ago by the Baczewski Distillery. They say that it is a royal drink, worthy of a royal beast… For the bison – we are speaking here of the European bison – is indeed a regal creature, weighing a ton, three and a half metres long and two metres high at the shoulder. Its noble mane and long beard give it a majestic appearance. Once it was the object of monarchical protection.

A decree of King Zygmunt the Old imposed the death penalty on anyone who killed a bison without the king’s permission. It was believed that the bison’s horns, so dangerous to hunters, had the magical power to neutralise all kinds of poisons. Drinking cups were fashioned from them, often ornamented with silver and precious stones and used during hunters’ banquets. By the early twentieth century, excessive hunting, poaching, and the havoc of World War I had almost killed off the European bison. In 1919 the last one left in Poland’s Bialowieska Forest fell and in 1925 the last one in the Caucasus was killed. They were the last two left in the world. Fortunately some remained in zoos and private refuges. In the 1920’s, at the initiative of the Polish zoologist Kan Sztolcman, the International Society for Preservation of the European Bison was established. Today there are thousands of these animals living free in protected wilderness areas, thanks to decades of devoted work by conservationists. Wisent is best slightly chilled. It can be served straight up in shot glasses or mixed. Try it with apple juice. 40% alc./vol.

You'd be foolhardy to enter the American Vodka market with a substandard product. While the potential is huge (upwards of 60 million cases are consumed annually), the competition is fierce. You need high quality and you need a niche. The 360 vodkas from the McCormick Distillery have both. In fact, the base spirit was summed up by www.vodkabuzz.com commenting, “If you want an ultra-premium vodka made in the United States, this is the one to get.” Secondly, spirits don’t come much more ‘eco friendly’ than these. It starts with a revolutionary bottle consisting of 85% recycled glass (70% post-consumer glass) that you can also rinse and re-use (the swing top is ideal for keeping oils, infusions, etc, or better yet, water so you can stop throwing those plastic bottles away). Labels are made with 100% post-consumer waste paper and easily removable. Four times distilled, five times filtered plus a range of flavours with strong reviews. Grab some while they last!

42 Below Honey Flavoured Vodka (700ml)
    Auckland, NEW ZEALAND
    $49. 99
    Bottle
    $599.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

A New Zealand spirit which began as a hobby conceived in a garage on a few misspent weekends, 42 BELOW was the brainchild of an ex-advertising man who sought to harness New Zealand’s global reputation for cleanliness and freshness, and encapsulate this in a vodka with the same qualities. Made in the Scandinavian style, 42 Below is distilled for purity rather than over powering flavour. However, there is still the weight associated with Slavic spirits, but without the polarising heat. The raw material is wheat from the Canterbury Plains, which is then distilled twice, before being ‘washed’ with spring water, achieving a saturation level that brings a level of purity and freshness to the spirit. 42 BELOW is then distilled a third time, before being charged with charcoal to remove any last impurities and filtered ready for dilution with spring water. All vodkas, regardless of the quality attained in the distillation, will stand and fall on the water source, which contributes so much to the finished product. In this sense, 42 BELOW, like Grey Goose, is distinguished by a water source of astonishing quality. The vodka is diluted with water which springs from deep beneath the volcanic plateau in the centre of New Zealand’s North Island. This spring has been graded 'Aa' by W.H.O., the global body responsible for measuring water quality across the planet, signifying water of unparalleled cleanliness and purity.

Tasting Notes: Very pale platinum straw hue. Earthy wildflower honey, vanilla bean ice cream, and anise cookie aromas are very attractive. A round smooth entry leads to a off-dry medium-to full bodied palate with earthy wild honey, dried flowers, and peppery star anise. Finishes with an earthy spice, honeycomb, and pepper fade with some vodka minerality popping up. An interesting, vibrant, and natural tasting honeyed spirit that will put a nice exotic twist on cocktails. 42% Alc./Vol.

42 Below Feijoa Flavoured Vodka (700ml)
    Auckland, NEW ZEALAND
    $49. 99
    Bottle
    $599.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%
This is a flavoured vodka which is quite unparalleled in the world of spirits, possessing a flavour that is incredibly unusual and intensely perfumed. The Feijoa is a South American fruit, with flesh that is pungent and tart, perhaps most similar in texture to a guava or pear, though any comparisons tend to be redundant in the context of such an unusual fruit. In New Zealand it is a ‘backyard icon’ where most homes have a feijoa tree, and the fruit is a staple of the childhood diet every autumn.

The process begins with unadorned 42 BELOW vodka, which is then distilled once more, this time washing over what might imaginatively be titled an ‘essence’, a paste of Feijoa pulp, which quickly transfers its pungent perfume into the spirit, which then cools and is bottled.

The nose is intense and unmistakable, with a powerful scent of Feijoa, and undertones of jasmine. In the mouth, the initial sensation is one of heat, though this owes more to the intense, tart bite of Feijoa, than to an unwelcome note of alcohol. There is also a sensation of the gritty flesh of the fruit itself, even though the vodka is unmistakably clear and pure. The finish is quite spectacular; a lingering, haunting hint of Feijoa long after the vodka itself has gone. Obviously, such a distinctive flavour can pose a challenge at the bar, and 42 BELOW Feijoa is best served with mixers that match its tart bite. Limes, kiwifruit, and sour apple schnapps are three such examples, though light flavours such as true lemonades, apple juices and ginger beer are equally fantastic. 42% Alc.Vol.

    Auckland, NEW ZEALAND
    $49. 99
    Bottle
    $599.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Like 42 Below's Feijoa Flavoured Vodka, the production process is very similar for this Passionfruit version, though this time using a fruit that is more globally recognised, and perhaps less uncompromising in flavour. As the flavour of Passionfruit is more subtle than other vodka flavours such as citrus and Feijoa, more of the fruit is needed to impart an equivalent effect.

Tasting Notes: The first nosing provides a fruity/ripe experience that’s elegant and restrained; aeration allows the bouquet to evolve into a splendidly fruit-salad fragrance. Palate entry is bittersweet and juicy; by midpalate, the flavor profile accents the grainy spirit as well as the passionfruit infusion. Finish is long and more beany than fruity. 85-89 points 42%Alc./Vol.

    $79. 99
    Bottle
    $959.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

The brand has recently combined efforts with a champion barista - Matt Perger of Melbourne’s St Ali Coffee Roasters.

“The combination of coffee and alcohol have so much potential for a delicious relationship but things often go awry,” said Perger. “The infusion of coffee into vodka is one of these moments when flavour doesn’t always live up to expectations. Vodka, and its high alcohol content, is an especially virile solvent. That is, it’s very good at stripping flavour out of other ingredients. When introduced to coffee, it can expose a lot of dry-distillate flavours that don’t usually appear when brewing with water. These flavours can be unpleasantly medicinal, quinic, ashy and burnt; none of which we want to see in our coffee vodka.”

“After many experiments and taste tests with 666 I can happily announce that we’ve been able to control the extraction of the coffee flavours to a point where we’re only getting the good stuff. A rich, chocolaty, fruity and lingering coffee flavour that sits happily alongside 666’s vodka without interfering or overpowering — a perfect sipper, mixer or accent to any drink.”

    ABV: 40%

Everybody knows that the Russian and Polish national spirit, made from rye malt and often potato starch, is vodka. However, one of the best value premium vodkas on todays market actually comes from Sweden. This superb, neutral vodka first appeared in 1979. Distilled from grain grown in the fields of Southern Sweden, Absolut was conceived as a pure product with its own peculiar Swedish identity. The distinctive bottle design was inspired by an antique medicine bottle, while the minimalist logo and absolutely clear glass emphasise the simplicity and purity of the product.

Tasting Note: A robust, full-bodied vodka with the aroma and flavour of roasted-grilled peppers, green tomato and dried herbs. Explosive, peppery flavors add great zest and concentration. 40%Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... The piquant, intense opening bouquet offers prickly darts of black pepper and hot red chili pepper. Palate entry is mildly hot and spicy, giving off deep tastes of dried red chili pepper; at midpalate, there's a brief respite but at the finish the chili pepper heat returns, most pleasantly. Classic Cocktail: The Bloody Mary
This is one of the few cocktails traditionally served in the morning, along with the Screwdriver. The name Bloody Mary is used to refer to the blood-like colour of the cocktail, but may have also been derived from “Bloody” Mary Tudor, Queen of England. The order of preparation can be crucial, and many bartenders guard secret recipes for the drink.

Fernand Petiot claims to have created the Bloody Mary as we know it today and describes in The New Yorker, 18 July 1964, the manner in which he made it: “George Jessel said he created it”, says Fernand, “but it was really nothing but vodka and tomato juice when I took it over. I cover the bottom of the shaker with four large dashes of salt, two dashes of black pepper, two dashes of cayenne pepper, and a layer of Worcestershire sauce; I then add a dash of lemon juice and some cracked ice, put in two ounces of vodka and two ounces of thick tomato juice, shake, strain, and pour. We serve a hundred to a hundred and fifty Bloody Marys a day here in the King Cole Room and in the other restaurants and the banquet rooms.”

    60ml Absolut Peppar Vodka
a few dashes of worcestershire sauce
a few dashes of tabasco (to taste)
    salt
    lemon
    tomato juice
Method: Stir or shake the vodka with the sauces and the spices. Fill up with tomato juice in a highball glass with ice. Garnish with a celery stick, if you like it and want to add some vitamins. If you don't have any fresh celery at home add celery salt.  - notes partially sourced from www.drinkboy.com

Flavouring vodka with berries is an age old Swedish tradition. Absolut Kurant vodka has natural flavouring added using fresh blackcurrant berries which grow throughout Sweden, even above the Artic circle. The result is a crush of cassis in a pure water-white vodka.

Tasting note: The tart, bitter black currant bouquet is stunning right from the beginning whiffs; time serves to deepen the black currant concentration to cassis-like. Crisp, tart flavor is razor sharp and clean; at midpalate, there’s an oily quality to the texture that underscores the racy, zesty, black currant flavor. Ends up ripe, fruity. Kurant is the unequivocal prototype for all berry-flavored vodkas.. 40% alc./vol.

An unusual pear / strawberry / mint vodka combination from the producers of the famous 'Cariel' Vanilla vodka.

Tasting note: Clear. Perfumed aromatics. Pear nectar top note over heavier scents of very ripe pear pulp. Borders on being candied. Soft, silky palate is slightly glycerous with good concentration and is strawberry conserve sweet. Gently warming spirit. Finishes clean / moderately fresh. 37.5% Alc./Vol.

Belvedere Cytrus (Citrus) Citrus Flavoured Vodka (700ml)
    $64. 99
    Bottle
    $779.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Belvedere Vodka from Polmos Zyrardow is crafted from 100% select Polish rye, distilled four times and charcoal filtered. Easily recognised by its innovative packaging, the bottle depicts the Belvedere House, the Polish equivalent to the White House, the official residence of the Polish president in Warsaw.

Created by flavour artist Elie-Arnaud Denoix, Belvedere Cytrus is crafted using a proprietory process of maceration or steeping and is a natural fusion of Belvedere spirit and the fruits essential oils. Then, using low heat , it’s slowly distilled with the real fruit in a small Alambic pot still. The final step is called the Coup, where one third of the purest flavoured spirit is put back into the still. This assures that every batch is related to the master batch for flavour consistency.

Other reviews... The early aroma is reined in, showing just a whisper of lemon peel zestiness; exposure to air stimulates more of the lime juice component as the lemon retreats. Palate entry features the lime essence as the flavor goes citrusy, acidic, razor-sharp and refreshing; at midpalate, the off-dry flavor remains focused on the lime juice/pulp. Concludes long and astringent. Excellent. 40% Alc./Vol. 90-95 points

    Cariel Vanilla Flavoured Vodka (700ml)
    Stockholm, SWEDEN
    $59. 99
    Bottle
    $719.88 Dozen
    ABV: 37.5%

A brand that has taken Sweden by storm, this triple-distilled Swedish wheat vodka aims to be the finest vanilla vodka on the market. The natural colour and the rich, smooth character of Cariel has been obtained through flavouring with vanilla from the orchid Vanilla Planifolia. Enjoy Cariel neat as a shooter or explore its broad usability as a cocktail base, mixable with your favourite fruit juices, sodas etc. and guaranteed to make the perfect White Russian. Too bad about the packaging ‘upgrade’ which is a backwards step from the previous presentation.

Tasting note: Presents a pale straw hue in the bottle but appears clear in the glass. Rich, sweet, perfumed aromas include vanilla, caramel and butterscotch. Lighter and drier than the nose suggests with flavours of vanilla and white chocolate. A little thin at mid palate. Finishes clean and dry with the vanilla and white chocolate notes persisting. Easy drinking and great for cocktails. 37.5% Alc./Vol.

    Chase Marmalade Flavoured Vodka (700ml)
    Herefordshire, UNITED KINGDOM
    $84. 99
    Bottle
    $1019.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Having sold Tyrrells Potato Chips, the Williams Chase Group diversified into a new direction with their spuds. Chase vodka was first produced in April 2008 and became the world's first super premium English potato vodka, and by 2010, was already voted Best Vodka by San Francisco World Spirits Competition. The family grow, mash, ferment, strip and distil their own full pedigree, gluten free, King Edward & Lady Claire potatoes on their Herefordshire farm. They use only traditional artisan methods including a bespoke copper pot still for the initial charge and a unique 70 foot rectification column, reputedly the tallest in Europe, for two further distillations.

An initial batch of marmalade vodka was a mere 1000 bottles but proved to be so popular that the company decided to make marmalade vodka a permanent addition to the Chase portfolio.  Chase Vodka is marinated with the finest Seville orange marmalade in a copper pot still. It’s then distilled a fourth time with the vapours passing through fresh orange peel, to create a complex, totally natural orange experience.

Tasting note: Very pale straw gold appearance. The aroma is in a word - marmalade, offering candied orange peel conserve qualities with lovely authenticity and freshness. In the mouth, a super soft spirit backbone repeats the aromas with a nice sweet / bitter balance and delicate citrus peel characteristics with good concentration, length and persistence for a flavoured vodka. The clean tangy aftertaste rounds off what could be a sound alternative to quality triple sec. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Pale golden color. Aromas of orange and lemon marmalades on rye toast with a supple, fruity medium-to-full body and a tangy, citrus pastry, grassy earth, beeswax saffron, and turmeric accented finish. A pure, cleverly flavorful and complex orange liqueur-like vodka.

Chase English Oak Smoked Flavoured Vodka (700ml)
    Herefordshire, UNITED KINGDOM

They use only traditional artisan methods including a bespoke copper pot still for the initial charge and a unique 70 foot rectification column, reputedly the tallest in Europe, for two further distillations.

The idea to create this addition to the Chase range was born in 2010 when the master distiller tasted some particularly fine smoked salmon at a local food fair. The method used to create the vodka is much the same. By smoking Chase's neutral vodka with English Oak for a period of around seven days, it creates an intriguing flavour, ideal for smokey cocktails, that would otherwise require heavily peated Whisky. More recent batches have seen the introduction of a new Herefordshire smoke house, thus guaranteeing the local origin of the oak used. It remains distilled and hand-bottled on the farm. 40% Alc./Vol.

From traditional European Flavoured Vodkas...

The Russians and Poles in particular market dozens of flavoured vodkas. Some of the better known types are "Kubanskaya", dried lemon and orange peels. "Limonnaya"- Lemon-flavoured. "Okhotnichya"- Hunter's Vodka, often with a mix of ginger, cloves, lemon peel, coffee, anise and other herbs and spices. "Pertsovka"- Pepper-flavored Vodka, made with both black peppercorns and/or red chilli peppers. "Starka" or "Old" Vodka, a holdover from the early centuries of Vodka production, which can be infused with everything from fruit tree leaves to brandy, Port, Malaga wine, and dried fruit. Some are aged in oak casks. Then there's more familiar brands like Zubrovka, flavoured with buffalo (or more properly "bison") grass, an aromatic plant enjoyed by the herds of the rare European bison.

...To contemporary Flavours & Trending Brands.

Now a vast array of non-traditional flavours are available to the vodka producer. Some infuse horseradish, toffee, feijoa fruit, peanut butter, espresso and even marmalade! The results can be amazing.
