Amaro Montenegro, "the liqueur of the virtues" , was created in 1885 thanks to the lengthy, impassioned experiments of a famous distiller and herbalist, Stanislao Cobianchi. The name "Montenegro" is a dedication to the beautiful princess Elena of Montenegro, who was engaged to Victor Emanuel III. In its over 100 years of history, Amaro Montenegro has seen its success grow continuously up to the present day, now being one of the leading brands on the Italian market. Produced from a blend of over 40 different herbs from all over the world Montenegro involves a distinct soaking and distillation process which results in a liquor sweet in taste with a slightly bitter finish. Appreciated as a digestive for consumption after meals, with soda, on ice or even hot. 23%Alc./Vol.

Tasting Notes "Displays early botanical scents of orange peel, fresh not dried coriander, red cherry, pekoe tea cucumber. Palate entry is sweet at first then it quickly turns mildly bitter and botanical; by midpalate, there's a slight sweetness of tangerine/mandarin peel. Aftertaste is moderately bittersweet and citrusy.
Rated: 90-95 Highly Recommended" -Wine Enthusiast.size>

Other reviews... Deep copper hue. Rich, Christmas pie, nutmeg, and herb aromas are inviting. A soft entry leads to a sweetish, light-to medium-bodied palate of bitter, medicinal herbs, honey, dried blood orange peel, and treacle. Finishes with a great mix of the sweet and bitter elements. A deeply flavored, highly-drinkable digestif. International Review of Spirits Award: Gold Medal

Averna Amaro Siciliano Digestif Liqueur (700ml)
    Sicily, ITALY
    $54. 99
    Bottle
    $659.88 Dozen
    ABV: 29%
    Closure: Cork

A speciality of Sicily, Averna’s secret recipe was founded by monks over 200 years ago. Averna has an unmistakable taste that comes from the unique combination of herbs and roots. Its method of preparation determines its full flavoured herbal qualities and distinctive aroma.

Tasting note: The deep sienna brown colour with a gold ochre hue appears slightly viscous in the glass. Smells like 'Chinnoti" with an attractive sarsaparilla / quinine combination, followed by hints of dried citrus peel. Viscous entry follows with reasonable intensity, becoming semi sweet at mid palate before finishing only mildly bitter. The ABV has dropped on this in recent times, and while we prefer some of the higher strength Amaros for all round concentration and added bite, this value offering is a pleasant way to finish a meal, every time. 29% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Inky soy-mahogany. Flowers, fresh herbs, licorice and mince meat. Rich texture. Lovely sensuous palate of wild, alpine fresh spice and succulent flavors. Very concentrated with a firm, yet silky presence on the palate and into the very deep, lingering finish. 32.0% alc./vol.

Other reviews… An initial aroma of bittersweet dark chocolate, orange peel, and herbs; air contact stimulates scents of flowers, jasmine, bark, forest, honey, and very light quinine. The palate entry is intensely sweet and floral; at midpalate the taste profile turns cocoa-like with notes of citrus rind, molasses, brown sugar, and grass. Concludes sweet, thick, and luscious.

Giuseppe Caffo built his small distillery in 1915 with the intention of creating the finest liqueurs from native Italian aromatic fruits and medicinal herbs. Over the decades, the operation has expanded considerably while remaining owned and operated by the family, who still employ traditional production methods and adhere to the highest quality ingredients.

The company's 'del Capo' brand of Amaro is considered the premier expression from Calabria. While standard amaro ingredients include some combination of juniper berries, laurel leaves, ginger, orange peel, anise, mint, elder (sambuco), cardamom, saffron, gentian, cinchona, citrus zest, bitter orange, sage, angelica, licorice, chamomile, cloves and cinnamon, this particular blend employs 29 herbs and roots and is slightly less bitter than most Amaros. The intense, earthy notes of herb and quinine make it ideal as a refreshing aperitif or digestif.
Serve it on ice with a twist or mix with soda as a "Cola Calabrese". 35% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Made using a mix of 29 Calabrian herbs and roots, this ruddy amaro is herbal and seductive, mixing root beer-like notes with honey and vanilla sweetness, all enlivened by a spicy accent on the finish. Cardamaro Amaro (750ml)
    ITALY
    $68. 99
    Bottle
    $827.88 Dozen
    ABV: 17%

An amaro made using Moscato wine with a key ingredient being artichoke thistle (aka 'cardoon', 'cardone' or 'cardoni'); It is the one and only wine-based amaro and the only one to employ Nizza Monferrato Cardoon - a winter vegetable similar to celery, but belonging to the artichoke family. After maceration is complete, the liquid is rested in oak for six months before bottling. Deep polished copper in colour, the aromas suggest citrus zest, gentian, pine wood, liquorice root and peppermint. The palate isn't heavy or particularly bitter - more medium-bodied, fresh and Vermouth-like with a zesty, pleasingly bitter, warming spice and quinine finish that also hints at bergamot, herbal teas and citrus. A delicious pre-dinner drink or refresher, but also sought out for its medicinal qualities, other ingredients include calumba, juniper, Gentiana Lutea berries, cloves, liquorice root, cardamom, lemon peel and marjoram cultivated in Piedmont. 17% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the producers... On the nose it is strong and complex, thanks to the blend of the various extracts and the long ageing process. Spicy notes of Hunchback Cardoon, Gentiana, clary sage and liquorice are prominent; hints of dried fruit, grapes and ginger also emerge. The taste is sweet, full and well-orchestrated flavour reflecting the extraordinary balance between the sweet note, the bitter quality of some of the officinal herbs and the pleasant tastiness of the wine. The tasting experience is unique, with pleasantness unmatched by any other amaro, thanks to the moderate alcohol content. The long-lasting aftertaste retains the complexity and spicy notes of the herbs, with a slight hint of tobacco.

Fernet Branca has been produced according to a secret family prescription at the Fratelli Branca Distillery in Milan since 1845. Over forty aromatic herbs, blossoms and spices such as enzian, safron, myrrh and camomile are used in its production. Although Fernet goes well over ice or with gin, it's often prescribed as a drink to prevent hangovers. According to Esquire's Handbook for Hosts from 1949, when mixed with rye, a few dashes of Pernod, and a lump of ice, Fernet Branca makes for an ideal pick-me-up. The health-enhancing properties of Fernet have made it the favoured "digestivo" at dinner tables across the world; traditionally served straight up at the end of a meal, it aids in digestion and cleanses the palate. This versatile liqueur can also be used to spike espresso to make the famous "caffè corretto" (literally, "spiked coffee") which is served all over the world. In recent years, as a new generation has discovered this invigorating liqueur, many have begun to serve it with cola, fruit juice, Grenadine, Energy drinks and even beer!

Tasting note: [2016 edition / taken from a 30ml sample] Pale, slightly cloudy salmon pink / autumn leaf orange. Other reviews... My “wine” of the weekend, though, was Nocturne, a new amaro (or bitter fortified digestif liqueur) from Victorian vermouth producer Maidenii. This incredibly complex, startlingly original drink started life as a barrel-aged rose, with layers of flavour then built up through additions of botanicals such as quandong, pepper, munthurri berries and black truffle, and a mouth-hugging bitterness provided by gentian and angelica. It’s very limited — just one barrel, or 300 bottles of this first release were produced... it’s one of the most remarkable fluids to have flowed across my tongue all year. - Max Allen

    Meletti Fernet (750ml)
    ITALY
    $79. 99
    Bottle
    $959.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Centuries-old and rooted in medicine, Fernet are a kind of sub-category of Amaro that are typically less sweet, or more bittersweet. Like Amaros, they're usually consumed at the end of a meal to aid digestion and are flavoured with locally grown plants and herbs so as to represent the flavours of a given region. The Branca brand has long held the top position in the Fernet world, but that hasn't stopped countless distilleries, both in Italy and beyond from making proprietary variations of their own.  Meletti's expression is described as a 'moderately bitter' style, offering hints of dark chocolate, coffee and mint, finishing with bitter gentian root, while the ingredients are said to include cardamom, myrrh, rhubarb, chamomile and saffron, among others. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... A stomach settler and a breath freshener, this liqueur is full-on minty from first sip straight through to exhale. The moderately bitter midpalate offers hints of dark chocolate, espresso and allspice. There's a passing resemblance to thin-mint cookies if you squint. 90 points - Kara Newman - wineenthusiast.com

This classic Italian liqueur is an infusion of aromatic herbs using an old family recipe. It can also substitute when vermouths are called for in drinks like Manhattans. 32% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... The brisk, invigorating scent of this amaro hovers between herbal and medicinal. On the palate, it skews sweeter, with rich caramel and hazelnut flavors and just enough bitterness and baking spice to keep things interesting. 93 points - Kara Newman - Wine Enthusiast

Nonino Amaro Riserva Digestif Liqueur (700ml)
    Udine, Friuli, ITALY
    $139. 99
    Bottle
    $1679.88 Dozen
    ABV: 35%

'Riserva' is the premium expression of grandfather Antonio Nonino’s ancient Amaro recipe, softened by aging in barriques and small casks for 24 months. Extended maturation was something of a family tradition - partly to create an alternative style and partly because the cost of stainless steel vats was prohibitive. The resulting deep gold coloured Amaro sports an aged-grappa like bouquet that's fresher than most. Soft aromas of fruit bread, dried apricots, raisins, quinine and a whisp of white pepper follow in a silky, medium bodied palate that's fruity and zesty more than bittersweet. The grappa base spirit comes through, while the finish ups the complexity adding suggestions of chamomile tea, gentian, bergamot, apple mint and warming spices. Being a lighter, less assertive style means this is both accessible and versatile. Pair it with cream based desserts, cheeses or Tiramisu and chocolate. Also recommended in an Old-Fashioned, but leave other bitters out. The beautiful, decoratively labeled 'apothecary' style bottle is an added bonus. 35% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Strong notes of eau-de-vie are wrapped up in toasted spice aromatics of dried blood orange peel, sandalwood, and cassia bark. On the palate, this is quite dry, with notes of kola nut, pine, and orange liqueur. The finish is wonderfully complex and long. 96 points - Ultimate Spirits Challenge 2022

The Nonino family have devoted themselves to the art of distillation since 1897 with each generation actively improving and innovating to change the perception of ‘Grappa’, Italy’s ancient and best known distillate. In 1973 Nonino became the first producer to create a single varietal Grappa, using the rare and indigenous Picolit grape, setting a trend which the rest of Italy’s distillers followed. This was to be the beginning of a campaign for the preservation of their local Friulian varieties. In 1984, Nonino again set the standard with their ‘ÙE’, distilling from whole grapes to preserve each varieties unique aroma and flavour.

This last forms the spirit base for Nonino’s Amaro liqueur (Amaro means "bitter" in Italian). Like other classic Amaris this herbal liqueur is traditionally drunk as an after-dinner digestif. Dozens of varieties are commercially produced, the most commonly available of which are Averna, Ramazzotti and Montenegro. Nonino’s is infused with alpine herbs and tangerines, aged in barriques of Nevers, Limousin and old Sherry wood. It makes a great aperitif over ice or chilled from the fridge with a wedge of orange. 35% Alc./Vol.

An intriguing spirit that's been produced from an eclectic array of ingredients (24 in total, of which 17 are botanicals.) These include linden blossom, birch bud, valerian root, raspberry, bilberry, and ginger as well as nutmeg and black peppercorn. A brief maturation period follows in oak barrels.

Riga's pharmacist created the basic recipe for this drink in the 18th century. Today its composition is supplemented with natural black currant juice along with ginger. Enjoy Riga Black Balsam Currant pure or in refreshing cocktails.

Tasting note: Viscous, autumn leaf brown with rust-red edges. Like a sloe gin, this offers attractive raspberry and black currant aromas refreshed by gentle acidity. The concentration is good too - initially creamy with semi sweet, juicy, ripe red berry and spice flavours followed by subtle bitter herbaceous notes late in the aftertaste. An old world classic. 30% Alc./Vol.

These include linden blossom, birch bud, valerian root, raspberry, bilberry, and ginger as well as nutmeg and black peppercorn. A brief maturation period follows in oak barrels. It pours an eye-catching, glycerous, burnt sienna brown with a gold ochre hue. The prickly aroma is as at once appealing as it is mysterious; An unlikely combination of iced coffee, raw sugar, dried berries, quince paste and cocoa that just works. The palate is initially semi-sweet, followed by a bittersweet surge of spice; flavours of cherry cola and sarsaparilla make this almost Amaro-like. The finish is properly bitter followed by a tannic, tea leaf aftertaste and a cocoa / bitter herbal fade. Enjoy it straight up, on the rocks, or mixed in a variety of cocktails. Latvians tell us it goes nicely with berry juice or in coffee. Otherwise, drink it as you would a digestif. 45% Alc./Vol.

Silvio Carta Bomba Carta Amaro (700ml)
    ITALY
    $119. 99
    Bottle
    $1439.88 Dozen
    ABV: 33%

Master Distiller, Elio Carta employs a selection of Sardinian flora cultivated in his father's garden. St John's Wort, Santolina, Thyme, Mugwort (Artemisia) and rare Sardinian Corbezzolo honey are just some of the botanicals that go into this deep sienna-coloured liqueur. Citrus peel, menthol, gentian, bitter herb, cocoa and baking spices are suggested on the nose, then echoed on the palate. By Amaro standards, this is robust; Medium to full-bodied flavours of bittersweet herbs and dried fruits are rounded off in a complex medley of peppermint tea, citrus zest, pepper, potpourri and warming alcohol. Others will note even more. Serve after dinner with a cube of ice. 33% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the importers... Intense dark brown in colour, it smells of resins, pine nuts and sea plants, with important and deep balsamic veins: mint, eucalyptus and bitter chocolate blend with dark honey and spices, all seasoned with Mediterranean scrub. It has a powerful taste, with a marked bitter vein of officinal herbs, essences of myrtle, juniper and cloves. Impressive is the long persistence, which encompasses tastes that are mineral, saline, balsamic and toasted which leave the mouth purring for several minutes after swallowing. Bottles are wrapped and labelled by hand.

    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%
An Amaro made with a blend of Scotch single malt and single grain, infused with nine botanicals: allspice, hibiscus, coriander, lovage, kola, quassia, rhubarb, lemon and lingonberry. The whisky base is a blend of Ardmore seven year old, North British single grain and Invergordon 12 year old. The whiskies were blended in-house, then infused with botanicals and lightly sweetened with urban honey from rooftop hives in Edinburgh. It’s a cross-genre take, bringing together two seemingly incompatible categories that works a treat.

Tasting note: Pale ruby red. Dry, rooty, raw beetroot-like aromas give way to bittersweet, warming notes suggesting clove, cola, smokey cardamom, rhubarb, all-spice and bitter peel. The aroma-range follows in a full-bodied, highly textural Amaro with a medley of turmeric, saffron, quinine and lemon peel-like notes. The finish is earthy, spicy, bittersweet and long. Try it over ice or topped with soda. 40% Alc./Vol.

The story of Teodoro Negro’s Toccasana has deep historical roots in the Asti area, where herbal knowledge and domestic pharmacopoeia have always been widespread. Teodoro Negro was born two months premature and the seventh of 12 children, on 22 February 1910, in Cessole (AT). According to popular tradition, babies born during the 7th month of pregnancy are endowed with extraordinary sensitivity and Teodoro was no exception: his uncommon empathy enabled him to establish a deep connection with people and identify their problems at a glance. Fond of herbs, he began to study them, collecting them and compiling detailed catalogues, until he opened an herbalist shop of his own. With the aim to learn more about the healing properties of herbs, he began training at the monastery of the Priarist Fathers in Carcare, and then continued his studies at the University of Pavia, where he obtained his herbalist diploma in 1940. Back home, he started developing the blend that would eventually lead him to produce Toccasana in 1970.

Cappelletti is a fourth generation herbalist from Aldeno Trento in the North East of Italy, producing Aperitivi and Amari. Instead, Cappelletti use a variety of rhubarb root combined with alpine herbs and berries.

Tasting note: Pours a viscous, turbid, umber brown with gold ochre edges. Peaks on the nose with an amalgam of intense earthy, rooty, woody aromas followed by cigar box, smouldering cedar and pipe tobacco. Creamy with gently bittersweet flavours of kumquat, liquorice root, smoked herb, bitter peel. Dries at the finish. Ends pleasantly bitter with a subtle smokey dried herb aftertaste. 20% Alc./Vol.

    ITALY
    $69. 99
    Bottle
    $839.88 Dozen
    ABV: 39%

Tasting Notes: Dark brown with an orange cast. Fresh peppermint aromas are very distinctive. A huge blast of menthol assaults the palate with a drying, bitter herb finish. Very dry and concentrated. 40%Alc./Vol.RATED: 91 points (Exceptional)
