    Camus Borderies XO Cognac (700ml)
    Cognac, FRANCE
    $325. 00
    Bottle
    $3900.00 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

An unusual Cognac distilled from fruit sourced entirely from Borderies - Cognac's smallest appellation. Soils here are a mixture of chalk and clay with a micro climate that is generally the earliest to ripen fruit. In style, Borderies are typically early maturing, full bodied brandies used to give 'backbone' when blending.

Tasting note: Burnished copper/orange with a pale copper hue. Superb, perfumed aromas offer a top note of orange blossom and dried flowers over deeper scents of dried apricots, raisins and cinnamon. At first fruity, luscious and intense, the palate gradually dries revealing fig, dried apricot and vanilla bean flavours with excellent length. Seamless integration and perfectly balanced, finishing with a long, dry, delicate aftertaste of orange rind, dried apricot and clove. Elegant and immensely attractive. 40% Alc./Vol.

    Cognac, FRANCE
    $9500. 00
    Bottle
    $114000.00 Dozen
    ABV: 42%
Taking extravagance to new heights is this gold-plated Grande Champagne Deau Cognac, oozing luxury from the outside in. Named “La Vie en Or”, or “Life in Gold”, the Cognac is a handpicked selection of eaux-de-vie from Grande Champagne and represents Deau’s rarest stocks matured to their optimum. It is also one of the most impressively presented cognacs we've seen to date, an aspect in which the house of Deau excels, with its beautiful asymmetrical bottles and contemporary designs. The decanter was commissioned by one of the finest Parisian jewelers, Arthus Bertrand, and comes presented in a sleek white box. Less than a handful are available in Australia.

Notes from the producers... Disrobes little by little to reveal a tantalizing array of subtle flavours…rich rancio, the signature aroma of grand old cognacs, followed by the luscious scents of ripe fruit and fruit compote, honey, pear, peach, fig and bitter almonds ending on lingering notes of cinnamon, vanilla, fresh tobacco and rice powder.

Deau has earned a quiet reputation as high quality Cognac marque and claims a lineage back to 1655 with the birth of Louis Deau and the family has been in the wine business for centuries. The estate is owned today by Bru-Legaret and operates twelve traditional pot stills and maintains an inventory of over 2,000 barrels of aging eau-de-vie in six cellars near the Charentes River. 42% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... A blend of over 100 Cognacs, some of which date back to the early 1800s. The aroma requires time; when it does emerge, it blossoms into a multilayered bouquet laced with tea leaves, red pepper, dried fruit and old oak. Starts sweet and caramel-like at entry; sensational midpalate features rancio, raisins, vanilla extract, dried flowers and honey. Finish is semisweet. Hennessy's pinnacle achievement. 95-100 points. CLASSIC. Highest  Recommendation. -  wineenthusiast.com

... A rich man’s Cognac that delivers the goods. Colour: Rich and vibrant mahogany. Nose: A rich melange of vanilla, herby floral and spice notes overshadowed by red roses. Palate: Complex, rich and balanced, no one flavour stands out; it takes on a character of its own, alluring and with flavours that just go on and on; Some detect cherries whilst I revel in the baklava-like oriental, languidly sweet finish. Comment: A connoisseurs Cognac living up to its presentation. 40%Alc./Vol. - Franz Scheurer, AGT Wine Magazine, Cognac Tasting 27th May 2005.

“A glorious Grande Champagne Cognac deserving of both the Hennessy and Fillioux signatures…”

'Composing a Cognac is a delicate exercise,' explains Hennessy master blender Yann Fillioux. The key word is blending. Many vintages, many vineyard sites, and most importantly, many tested and combined ratios resulting in the most perfect blend of Cognac, which is the most perfect brandy.
Being Cognac’s oldest producer, Hennessy have learned to capture the fruit as well as the floral charactertistics, resulting in Cognacs of great elegance. Fillioux's family members have been amongst the companies master blenders since 1800. In 1873, Emile Fillioux created a special blend for the private enjoyment of the Hennessy family. Over decades, other private blends were created, inaccessible to the public. After re-examining thier remarkable reserve library of extraordinarily old and diverse Cognac, Hennessy have recreated the formula of the original 1873. Labelled as “Private Reserve”, this limited offerring contains within its blend, a portion of Cognac from the 1870's, along with a heavenly host of other selected vintages. The result is a glorious Grande Champagne Cognac, deserving of both the Hennessy and Fillioux signatures.

A sniff of Hennessy Private Reserve leads with dried orange and roasted almond complexities. 'There is vanilla which is a powerful aphrodisiac,' says New York master sommelier and beverage consultant Steve Olsen, 'along with dried roses and other floral mystique.'

Colour: Rich jarrah with light amber and orange highlights. Nose: The most floral in this line-up it also surprises with complex citrus notes solidly anchored in lightly scented wood. Palate: Citrus flavours confirm the nose and the creamy, soft, textured mouth-feel enables rich ginger and white chocolate notes to register. Thomson is particularly taken with the silky softness of this Cognac’s impact on the tongue; an impossibly long and balanced finish makes this Cognac live on, seemingly forever. 1953 Jean Fillioux Grande Champagne 1er Cru Cognac (350ml)
    Cognac, FRANCE
    $850. 00
    Bottle
    $10200.00 Dozen
    ABV: 42%

This 57 year old Grande Champagne cognac is guaranteed to be one of the great spirits experiences of your drinking career. Distilled from the 1953 harvest, a highly regarded vintage when the grapes produced particularly ripe, concentrated wines with exceptional balance and harmony. Fillioux's house style tends to be light, fruit driven and elegant, however he has proven there are exceptions to that rule. This straddles a middle-ground but is undeniably profound - even from a 10ml sample - running the gamut of honey drizzled figs, nectarines, passionfruit, jasmine, cigar box and rancio on both the nose and palate in an almost ethereal fashion. Although the entry is unassuming, it unfolds in a superb 'peacock's tail' of fruity, floral, oaky flavours that are succulent, super elegant and incredibly long. You will be tasting this stunning Hors d'age cognac for minutes after the first sip. Comes presented in a heavy base bottle sealed with red wax housed in an imposing presentation box. Bottled in September 2010 with an outurn of 800 x 350ml bottles. 42% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the producer... Eye: Amber with a red glow. Nose: Teasing aromas of dried flowers, old sherry, incense, and old leather. Palate: Gingerbread, quince confit and toasted orange zest. Delightful finish with fresh hits of liquorice and sweet spices.

    Jean Fillioux No.1 Cognac (500ml)
    Cognac, FRANCE
    $390. 00
    Bottle
    $4680.00 Dozen
    ABV: 46%
Tasting note: [Lot no.0918] While the age isn't stated, the deep copper colour of this Grande Champagne Cognac indicates long maturation (the importers say it's over 60 years old). A luscious, lipsmacking and masculine hors d'age expression, it opens with sensuous aromas of nectarine, raisins and baking spices as well as drier notes of pepper and cedar wood and continues to evolve after air contact; 46% ABV amps up the body and mouthfeel; immediately warm and inviting with the perfect juxtaposition of succulent orchard fruits and oaky astringency, finishing with nectarine, passionfruit, buttery oak and late pepper. Super long, this delivers on all sensory accounts. First class. 46% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... This one is said to be sixty years of age, depending on the sources. Colour: deep gold. Nose: oh! Now we’re really talking, with quinces, citrons, fennel seeds, marmalade, lime blossom, orange blossom, spearmint, liquorice wood, wormwood, woodruff… All those tiny herbs and plants do really make it complex and just pretty sublime. With Cognac, age does matter, if I may… Mouth: love this. It’s pretty unpolished, even a tad rough, but that’s an asset here. Perfect liquorice plus orange combo at first, beeswax, then touches of cider, cardamom, blackcurrants, pomegranates… I’m even finding a little cinchona (Apérol, just ten times nicer). Finish: long, a tad rough (again, an asset in this context), with a little orange-flavoured fudge. Perhaps. Comments: totally high class. Not sure it is true that this is 60yo juice, but anyway, quality’s really very high. 88 points - Serge Valentin, whiskyfun.com

Paul Giraud Noblesse Grand Champagne Cognac (500ml)
    Cognac, FRANCE
    $3100. 00
    Bottle
    $37200.00 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Paul Giraud's 'Noblesse' is a stunning composition marrying incredible depth of age with youthful vibrancy (a small percentage is aged in demijohns). It boasts a sublime perfume of figs, nectarines, dried apricots, ripe peaches as well as sandalwood, cigar box, manuka honey, sprinklings of pepper and liquorice root and resonates with a slow, intense flood of wood spices, nectarine, fig and dried apricot flavours combined with precision-tuned astringency. Six decades finds the wood (almost) too much; However Giraud's oldest bottlings are noted for their ethereal return from the back palate. You get it here in an encore that completely defies expectations: a haunting, sustained aftertaste hinting at orchard fruits, acacia, jasmine and rose water that unfolds over several minutes. Beautifully harmonised, this mature and totally evolved cognac will show its best after decanting or ample air contact. Highest recommendation. At the time of writing, just one bottle is available. 40% Alc./Vol.

One of a declining number of first rate producers who resisted the tide of multinational take overs in Cognac, Paul Giraud's Grande Champagne range are created from a magical 35 hectares in Bouteville and in St. Même-les-Carrières. Combining traditional methods with a modern take on production, he avoids chemicals or pesticides and colouring additives in the final blends. Hand harvests are the norm, ensuring careful treatment of the grapes to yield the finest eau-de-vie. Representing one of the high points in his collection to date, 'Noblesse' comes packaged to impress in a bi-fold, lacquered timber box housing a weighty, engraved decanter and stopper.

The Giraud family have been growing grapes around France since 1650, yet only decided to produce Cognac under their own name in the 1980s. A long time associate of Giraud informed us "He became frustrated selling his thirty-five year old cognacs to Remy-Martin. His cognac was destined to become a part of the blend, Louis XV [currently selling for around A$2000.] This was a very brave move during such times - he was one of the first to do so, but we are thankful he did, he paved the way for many more to come."

Produced from Ugni Blanc and Folle Blanche grapes grown on the family's vineyards located in the heart of Grande Champagne, this venerable Cognac has been aged in excess of 25 years.

Tasting note: Pretty gold amber colour. Sauternes-like opening sniff is superbly pure in its dried apricot, honey and candied fruit delivery. Second phase finds no diminution in the stunning honey, cream and apricot aspect with sweet spices (vanilla and clove) entering the mix. Returning to the glass several minutes later introduces rose petal and hints of mandarin peel to round off a dazzling cognac bouquet. Palate is concentrated / full weighted but graces through the mouth with a sense of lightness; dried fig, cedary oak and toasted almond feature. Finishes gently tannic, lip smacking and dry; the yellow fruit phase is again suggested in the aftertaste - in particular apricot - followed by a prolonged, subtle vanilla and toasted almond fade. First class. 40% Alc./Vol.

Cognac is a huge earner for France, with exports frequently representing over 90% of total cognac production. Well over 100 million bottles are sent to key markets such as Asia and the U.S. each year. At the same time, more than half of the cognac market continues to be controlled by three major houses: Hennessy, Martell and Remy Martin. In marginal markets like Australia, this has meant the availability of artisan products has been over shadowed by the promotional power of the 'big three'. Unfortunately, big name brand V.S. and V.S.O.P. bottlings, while generally offering pleasant enough drinking, of late have delivered nothing to get particularly enthused by.

The Giraud family have been growing grapes around France since 1650, yet only decided to produce Cognac under their own name in the 1980s. A long time associate of Giraud informed us 'Giraud became frustrated selling his thirty-five year old cognacs to Remy-Martin. Paul Giraud Heritage has been maturing quietly in the family cellars for over fifty five years. Presumably this material was destined to be sold off to Remy-Martin, Giraud's vision and bravery allows us the opportunity to taste this extraordinary spirit, bottled directly from the cask, without the taint of caramel or other younger Cognacs.

Deeply satisfying. Among the very finest spirits on the shelves at Nicks Wine Merchants.

Tasting Notes: Pale gold colour with water like hue. An astonishing nose. Pristinely clean perfumed aromas of spice, marmalade, cedar, peach, almond and a hint of talc leap from the glass. As the Cognac warms, the array of aromas changes dramatically, continuing unprecedented levels of aromatic pleasure. The palate entry is plush, warm and velvety - almost seductive - offering wave upon wave of strong spicy plum pudding, stone fruit, exotic spices, vanilla, with a vibrant, fresh background. The finish is exceptional, much like this tasting note it just keeps going and going and going. Perfect balance. Extraordinarily long peach, apricot and spice aftertaste. Among the very finest spirits on the shelves at Nicks Wine Merchants, and (relatively speaking of course) a bargain - we recommend pouring this at least twenty minutes prior to tasting to allow this spirit to blossom. 40.0% Alc./Vol.

This is the famous Cognac house's top-of-the-line offering, a truly stunning Cognac blended from around 1,200 different eaux-de-vie from the Grande Champagne appellation. The youngest material is at least 40 years old, while some of the spirit was distilled more than 100 years ago.

“Louis XIII is not a Cognac,” they say at Rémy. “Put simply, it’s a moment.” It is the result of three generations of Cellar Masters, resulting from the combined labour of 10,000 people.

Reputedly, this has been a favourite of Elton John, Christian Dior and Winston Churchill. The latter celebrated his election with it in 1951.

The packaging of Louis XIII shares almost as much history as the Cognac itself. The idea for the glass came from an old bottle found by Emile Rémy Martin on a Jarnac battlefield. Since then, the carafe has evolved into its distinguished shape, manufactured by Baccarat since 1936. A solid gold collar encases the neck, which is adorned by a signature fleur-de-lys crystal stopper.

Other reviews... Amber color. Harmonious, hallmark bouquet of blue cheese-like rancio, truffles, roasted chestnuts and prunes; the aroma stays firm and concentrated through 10 minutes of nosing. Accessible, satiny smooth at palate entry, then at midpalate the flavor profile turns semisweet, profound and pruny. Finishes gracefully, almost like a ghost on the tongue. Lovely. 90-95 points

The grandfather in the Tesseron collection with the oldest component hitting 70 years.

A blend of Grande Champagne cognacs distilled in the 1920s along with 5% from 1905 and 30% from 1906 with both Colombard and Folle Blanche in the mix. In terms of sheer finesse, effortless delivery and depth, Lot 29 is a high point in the Tesseron collection. The age of the material is on full show in a complex medley of dried fruits, honey, dark chocolate, liquorice, pipe tobacco and cigar box, rounded off in a super-fine, medium-long finish of hazelnut dark chocolate, saffron and feathery tannins. The alcohol is barely discernible. It may lack the power and length of its siblings, but this is easily Tesseron's most feminine and seamlessly integrated cognac - also one of the rarest. It's reported that only a few more years of production remain. Tasted from a 50ml sample. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... "...anything this smooth, silky, potent, and aromatic, is truly great stuff. It is about as ethereal Cognac as anyone could ever hope to drink." 100 points - Robert Parker, eRobertParker.com Oct 2005

...Aged by three generations, they say. But is this a 1929 indeed? What's sure is that Lot N°53 had already been quite sublime two or three weeks ago (WF 90). And never mind those 40% ABV, which are really out of fashion and have become quite devalued. Colour: deep gold. Nose: it's probably a little difficult after the Valleins, we're actually closer to some very old calvados here, it rather whispers and sighs, being a little herbal beyond some ripe apples and peaches that, having said that, keep expressing themselves after so many years. Affabile and con tenerezza. Mouth: more action than I had thought, but we remain far from the others – and far from Tesseron Lot N°53. Some sweetness, syrups, Nescafé (I know), a little pancake sauce, mead… Finish: shortish, on herbal teas, chamomile, stewed peaches… Some candy sugar in the aftertaste. Comments: I know I tend to be rather kind towards very old spirits, and of course, this cognac from the roaring twenties remains as nostalgic as an old Bugatti, but I believe that here the engine has lost a little horsepower. Still very good.  84 points - whiskyfun.com

..."This sits in the 'classic range' but is called 'Exception' because 'this is where Grande Champagne really soars'. Distilled in the 1920s and contains some colombard and folle blanche. 'This is pretty much what I consider my grandfather's Cognac, 1920s distilled but with a portion from a 1905 demi-john. For me this is a bit like a book, every time you go back to it it changes, something very special; the rancio is quite strong, but very different from the 1953; very special for us, and very rare to have it tasted, if at all. Very rare bottle, but this is our first visit to Australia so I really wanted to show it' so sayeth Melanie Tesseron. Bright golden with orange hue. Amazing aromatics; amazing. Incredible to inhale, no higher alcohol burn to turn a head away, but rich, sweet-tinged, spicy and fruity, even. There's the warmth of charred oak, wet logs, sandalwood and dark chocolate too. Feels so very smooth, lathed, slippery and yet insanely deep - triggers of fine woods, fresh honey, light rancio and a kind of liquid-mineral vein, firing in volleys within the contained frame of the Cognac. And while the texture remains supple, there's a long, slow burn of campfire-like embers to close; it glows with a definitive sweetness, and then ebbs away with freshening floral, toffee notes and an almost briny tang. Wow. Wow." - Mike Bennie, The Wine Front

...The nut-paste, oaky scents take on a citrusy tone as the smell turns fruitier the more it aerates; lovely and compelling. The palate entry is supple, fruity sweet, and ripe; the midpalate stage highlights melded flavors of light caramel, marzipan, and nougat. Ends up oaky- sweet, lightly spiced and satiny. 90-95 points - wineenthusiast.com

    Camus Extra Elegance Cognac (700ml)
    Cognac, FRANCE
    $780. 00
    Bottle
    $9360.00 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Camus Extra Elegance falls into the 'Hors DAge' category being blended from material between 30 and 50 years old from Borderies, Grande Champange and Petite Champagne. Launched for celebrating the new millenium, it comes packaged in a crystal decanter without any labels or other identifying marking, excepting an embossed metal stopper.

Camus, the fifth largest Cognac house worldwide, has been a family-owned producer for five generations, since its inception in 1863. The company is not afraid to push boundaries and one of its XO offerings is purely from its most favoured region, which is the smallest cru in Cognac - Borderies (see also on this site). Camus is also planning to debut several Vintage Cognacs. While 'Extra' has been part of its offerings from its beginnings, this is the first time it has been for sale in Australia (with the exception of duty-free). The Extra Camus version enjoys wide popularity in the Asian market, and the company says that it is the leading “extra” globally.

Tasting note: Pretty autumn leaf brown / bright copper appearance. Aromatically heavier and less floral than the XO with rich scents of dried fig, pipe tobacco, buttered raisin toast, old leather and orange cake; Shows restrained power in a dry yet silky delivery of stewed pear, raisins and gentle spice; Finishes elegant and tight with cedary, tea-like tannins and hints of white pepper & vanilla in the fade. Understated. 40% Alc./Vol.

Camus Extra Dark & Intense Cognac (700ml)
    Cognac, FRANCE
    $699. 00
    Bottle
    $8388.00 Dozen
    ABV: 40%
In 2000, Camus released 'Extra Elegance' – an innovation at the time. Now comes "Dark & Intense", a more aromatic and concentrated expression. In line with its predecessor, this is handsomely presented in a sleek, black carafe, topped by a weighty gold coloured cap. This cognac goes through a slightly different process. After selecting the eaux-de-vies, the barrels are opened and the contents removed. The barrels are then exposed to an open flame for just the right amount of time (as determined by the Cellar Master). The flames 'regenerate' the aromatic potential of the barrels. The cognac is then returned to cask to continue to age. Tasting takes place on a daily basis to ensure that the process is stopped at just the right time.

Tasting note: The spectacular polished copper colour is matched by the superb bouquet - dried figs, dates and ripe nectarine; 2-3 minutes of swirling adds cedary oak, cocoa and sticky date to the mix. Richer and more luscious than the standard 'Extra', with a mid-palate burst of dried fruits (figs, raisins, fruit cake). The finish turns sweetly oaky, honeyed, warming followed by cafe cremes, vanilla and caramel, drying with traces of cigar box and liquorice strap. A finely tuned, flavourful, luxury cognac that draws comparisons to extra-aged New World brandies. 40% Alc./Vol.

    Delamain Extra Cognac (700ml)
    Cognac, FRANCE
    $379. 99
    Bottle
    $4559.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%
One of Delamain's oldest expressions, Extra comes in an original decanter, designed and blown exclusively for Delamain. In cognac, the 'Extra' classification is essentially the same as XO (at least 6 years of age), however it denotes a quality that's superior to an XO or Napoleon, so the average age is typically 15-25 years. Delamain's goes beyond that.

Tasting note: Bright amber gold. Shy and dry... vapoury alcohol, pencil shavings, muted dark chocolate, dried fruits. 5-10 minutes air contact expands the bouquet adding hints of honey, orange blossom, dried fig, cedar but the aroma remains relatively restrained. Palate offers a superb, slow-motion release of orchard fruits (apricot, fig, peach), light rancio and an almost chewy feel. Finish accents cedary oak, wild honey, light passion fruit, cocoa and vanilla. Ends fresh, finely tannic, linear, understated and deceptively long with the exotic fruit notes reverberating late. Give it plenty of time to show its best. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews… The bouquet is a model of aromatic elegance with subtle aromas of oak, bacon, oak, toffee, baked pear, baked banana and honey. The palate entry finds harmonious, completely integrated tastes of honey, oak, grapes and spice; at midpalate tastes of bacon fat, pork rind and oaky vanillin are added. A masterpiece. 95-100 points - wineenthusiast.com

On the nose, you first perceive old fashioned rose and a hint of cherry blossom, then the wood comes into play and integrates the fruit. On the palate, it displays strong rancio characters, a beautiful velvety softness with a hard edge of raisin and walnut. It finishes long, strong and dry for a sublime experience.

Hennessy has chosen to mark a milestone with this aptly named '250th Collector Blend', a limited-edition that brings together spirits from four different decades in one elegant bottle. An achievement of Master Blender, Yann Fillioux who started training at Hennessy when he was only 19 years old, it represents a middle ground between cognacs like Paradis and Richard Hennessy - so is perhaps best thought of an entry point to Hennessy's super premium offerings. The cognacs in the blend are all between 15 and 40 years old and no more will be made beyond the 250 x 250 litre barrels. Evaporation, dilution, and some other factors mean the exact outturn is impossible to determine, but one can assume it was around 50,000 bottles. Collectible. One only from a private collection.

The highpoint in the Hennessy collection is this hors d'Age Cognac composed of several hundred rare eaux de vie. Comes presented in a stunning decanter topped by a crystal stopper and an 18 carat gold ring. Carry case included.

Other reviews... Blended from eaux-de-vie ranging from 30 to 130 years old, “this is the jewel of the Prestige collection,” I was told by the brand ambassador. Louis Vuitton has apparently designed a trunk to hold the ornate crystal bottle. So how is the juice inside? Unexpectedly light amber in color with a very complex nose of jasmine, citrus blossom, cedar forest and a touch of forest floor. In the mouth, it’s crisp, fresh and spicy, offering attractive notes of green tobacco, licorice and spring herbs, and a lean, angular structure that stands out. Yes, there’s lots of hype, and the price is astronomical, but with Paradis Impérial you will at least get a delicious, subtle, complex brandy.

In 1765, Richard Hennessy laid the foundations of a priceless collection made up of his most exceptional eaux de vie. Since then, eight generations of the Hennessy family have enriched the Founder's warehouse with their own contributions of the finest cognacs produced during their lifetimes. It is from this collection that Hennessy has created Richard Hennessy, as a homage to its founder.

Richard Hennessy is made up of more than 100 of the most exceptional eaux de vie, some of which date from the early 19th century. Each one has been selected for its unique qualities. Balanced and complex, the rich bouquet slowly releases a succession of aromas that have built up over the years: vanilla, spices, pepper and delicately fragrant flowers. In the mouth, the infinitely refined texture reveals an extraordinary palette of flavours that blends spices, the subtle essence of ripe fruit and the finesse of oak.

A tulip-shaped taster’s glass, or a small snifter will warm the spirit and guarantee the gradual but full release of the aromas. According to Talleyrand, celebrated 18th-century French politician and illustrious customer of Hennessy, to enjoy a cognac such as Richard Hennessy one must 'cradle the glass in the palm of one’s hand, swirl the spirit to release its full aroma, lift it to one’s nostrils, inhale deeply and then... set it down and discuss its virtues'.

    'Hennessy's pinnacle achievement'.

Hennessy's pinnacle achievement.

In 1774, Richard Hennessy set up a small warehouse on the right bank of the River Charente to house his rarest eaux de vie, now known as the 'founder’s warehouse.' Since then, eight generations of the Hennessy family have built up what is now the finest collection of old eaux de vie in the world. It is from these that Hennessy has been able to create Paradis Extra. Paradis Extra is the fruit of successive marriages between hundreds of different eaux de vie, nurtured to maturity by successive generations of the same family of cellar masters.

This Cognac is a veritable fireworks display of spices and peppery notes, softened by the fragrant scent of flowers. Finesse and elegance are the major characteristics. Perfectly harmonious in the mouth, Paradis Extra reveals itself to be smooth, full-bodied and long lasting on the palate. Its force and finesse, plus the delicate flavour of rancio, give it a perfect balance. Exceptional cognacs such as Paradis Extra should be enjoyed using tall, thin glasses that narrow slightly towards the top. Such glasses retain the aroma and transmit easily the warmth of the hands to the spirit.

The sweet seducer! Colour: Dark walnut with a distinct, deep reddish tinge. Nose: Wood and marshmallows vie for attention with gingerbread and Oolong tea aromas. Palate: Initially sweet, verbena-like aromas become heavy with chocolate, custard apple, slowly turning to mandarin peel, leathery, almost masterstock-like flavours finishing with sweet Pedro Ximenez notes; the finish is long, honeyed and dry, a majestic end to a great Cognac. Comment: The sweetness and balances totally seduces; this would have to be your ‘last wish’ Cognac. 40% Alc./Vol.  - tasting note by Franz Scheurer, AGT Wine Magazine, Cognac Tasting 27th May 2005.

A sublime marriage of over 100 eaux-de-vie, some more than a century old. Amber/gold appearance. Textbook tete de cuvee Cognac bouquet of pine needles, clover honey, rancio, sweet oak and spiced apple. Offers elegant flavors of fatty rancio, soft cheese, wood smoke and bacon fat from entry through midpalate. Finishes more woody and resiny than fruity-ripe. Still a favorite after all these years. Gorgeous.

    ABV: 40%
Described as "A Triumph of Grande Champagne" by cognacexpert.com, Hine Triomphe was first created in 1888 to celebrate the winegrower's stand against the phylloxera epidemic, a vine disease that decimated European vineyards and brought the Cognac industry to its knees. Classified as an 'hors d’age' (beyond XO), it's composed of over fifty fully-matured Grande Champagne eaux-de-vies set aside over fifty years ago and matured in small casks in Hine's Jarnac cellars. Aficionados will note that a decanter version sells for much more than this 'standard' presentation, the latter providing Cognac lovers with a more affordable opportunity at one of Hine's super premium bottlings. Very limited stocks.

Other reviews... A lovely opening bouquet of tropical fruit; following further aeration, the bouquet becomes deeper as the oak enters the equation along with honey and beeswax. The palate entry is sweet with overtones of marzipan and light caramel; at midpalate the taste profile highlights the oaky vanilla and honey elements. Concludes gracefully, integrated and semisweet. 40% Alc./Vol. 90-95 points / Superb/Highly Recommended - wineenthusiast.com

One of the high points in Hine's collection is this masterful blend of twelve different cognacs. All the grapes were grown in Grande Champagne and distilled between 1921 and 1959. Originally created by Bernard Hine to celebrate the marriage of his ancestor Thomas Hine to Elisabeth in 1796, it comes finished in a stunning Baccarat crystal decanter - a work of art in it's own right. This will take your cognac experience to another level with notes of jasmine and lively stone fruits combined with ethereal notes of hazelnuts, walnuts and rancio showing the maturity of this extra-aged expression. 40% Alc./Vol.

At 45 years old, this pushes the maturation further than ever before, and to great effect.

Classified as an 'Hors d’Age' Cognac, meaning "beyond age", this category falls under the XO denomination, but refers to Cognacs with an average age of thirty years (XOs require a minimum of ten). Hors d’Age at fifty years or even one hundred years old are not uncommon - in short, they're often the oldest Cognacs on the market. The youngest Cognac in JLP's blend is reportedly from the early 1970s. Made solely from Grande Champagne eaux-de-vie, it’s a wonderful example of why this appellation is considered the most prestigious terroir in the region.

Tasting note: Deep brassy gold colour. Superb aromatics include dried fig, raisin and assorted sweet spices. Loses little intensity or direction on the second pass with the dried fruits dominating - now more apricot , then richer scents of dates and fruit-nut chocolate. A superb sniff. Pure, creamy entry shows delicacy and refinement following through to an elegant, dryish, medium bodied profile that includes spiced raisin and dried nectarine, unfolding in a sustained and controlled fashion to conclude biscuity, cedary and briefly sweeter with elements of clove, vanilla and dried fruits entering. Prolonged, drying fade lasts several minutes. Debonair in every respect. A compelling departure from the house XO style. 44% Alc./Vol. Approximately 400 bottles produced.

Other reviews... This one’s 45 years old. You know about the shameful prices for any miserable 45 yo malt whisky, don’t you. Colour: amber. Nose: sublime raisins and waxes, with some rancio appearing, mandarins, citrons, church candles, chén pi (some say pericarpium citri reticulatae), pipe tobacco, dates, pine needles, drops of motor oil, paraffin… This is splendid indeed, very complex, and relatively ‘serious’. Meaning it’s not a fruit bomb. Mouth: when, after many years, oranges meet with pine resins and herbal teas. Rosehip, hawthorn, tangerines, some tobacco again, that miso soup, rather Corinthian raisins this time, something delicately glutamate-y, some cinnamon (as always with these old ages), a little cedar wood, a little liquorice… Finish: long, well balanced, never drying, never too oaky. Oranges, some honey, cedar, cinnamon. A rather waxy aftertaste. Comments: didn’t someone pour a bottle of old Clynelish into the cask? Some marvelous old Cognac of the same quality as those of some similarly aged old Glen Grants or Glenlivets. It’s just that the Cognac’s twenty times cheaper. I agree, a no brainer. 91 points - Serge Valentin, whiskyfun.com

Jean Luc began working alongside his uncle Albert in 1971 on an estate from the Grande Champagne sub-region that had been in the family since 1730. Located south of the city of Cognac, between the rivers La Charente and Le Ne, covering 13000 Ha, the soils here are made of a thin top layer of limestone with a high calcareous content and Montmorillonite clays, resting on a base of porous chalk from the Cretaceous (campanien sub-period), acting as a buffer for water supply to the vineyards. Such edaphic parameters contribute to fruit quality by avoiding vine stress in warm weather, and at the same time, allowing excellent drainage in case of excessive rains. Thus Grande Champagne holds the potential for optimum flavour profiles to develop in the grapes (which usually fall within the floral spectrum) making it Cognac's most prized terroir.

Taking the Lafite-Rothschild experience one step further are an exclusive selection of wood-aged spirits.

For many years, the Rothschilds accumulated 'private reserves' of old cognacs for no other reason besides a belief that "Nothing can replace the pleasure of an exceptional cognac after a meal where the finest and rarest wines have been served". Such treats were kept for esteemed guests and friends, but all good things must come to an end (nothing seems to disappear faster than one’s favourite reserves of wines or spirits!) This was the case at Château Lafite Rothschild. Something had to be done. Luckily, the vignerons of Cognac and some of their negociants’ friends have maintained a tradition of saving a percentage of production each year. For them, there is no better “nest-egg” even if only to have the pleasure of consuming these spirits in the eve of their lives. Such investment barrels are the source of Lafite's current offering.

While these family reserves were never intended to be marketed, guests often requested a second helping, then a third. Anticipating an even broader demand, Lafite began to release small volumes annually. We have been fortunate enough to get our hands on a miniscule allocation. The chance to own a bottle of a unicorn spirit like this is equivalent to an invitation into one of the world's most exclusive clubs. If you consider yourself a 'big-game hunter' of any persuasion, it will be one of the more enviable trophies on your mantle piece.

The extraordinary Très Vieille Réserve is created from 90% Ugni Blanc, 5% Folle blanche and 5% Colombard sourced from Grande Champagne (70%) and Borderies (30%) and selected from lots aged at least 50 years. In this case it is the culmination of a thirty year partnership between Lafite-Rothschild and the Cognac house, Maxime Trijol. Since the Trijol family originally settled as growers and distillers in St Martial Sur Né, in the heart of the Cognac region they have built on their expertise as growers and distillers, becoming full time distillers in 1962. An independent family firm supplying many of the region's most famous names, in recent times the company has concentrated on releasing more of its own cognacs which have been building a great reputation for quality.

Lafite's Tres Vieille Reserve comes replete with a wax-sealed antique style bottle (probably hand-blown) housed in an oak presentation box. Very limited stocks.

Notes from Lafite Rothschild... Colour: Amber colour, almost mahogany. Nose: Very complex, combining wooden, vanilla, old Porto, dry fruits, nuts to floral notes (dry rose), but also spicy (clove and pepper), cigar wooden box. Palate: Light and elegant structure, rich and wooden notes. Perfectly well-balanced and with tremendous length, it shows a complexity, suppleness and exceptional aromatic persistence which make it ideal to enjoy as a digestive at the end of a meal. 40% Alc./Vol.

A very special bottling to celebrate 150 years of growing and distilling by the Trijol Family. Trijol has included some of his finest Grande Champagne reserves in order to create a statement piece worthy of six generations of labour. To further emphasise its provenance, it comes traditionally packaged in an 'antique' style waxed-dipped bottle.

Tasting note: Bright topaz / flashes in the glass. Wavers before releasing a stunning perfume running a gamut of all things fruity: dried fig, ripe red fruits, peach and ripe apricot; Further aeration accents honey, vanilla cream, dark chocolate. 5-10 minutes dries the bouquet, adding hints of cedar, cinnamon and nectarine. Super-silky, nuanced and feminine: Mid palate features a burst of dried fig and honey. Graceful and understated, becoming more succulent towards the finish, focusing on stone fruits / fig / apricot. Ends more off-dry and savoury, with hints of orange spice cake, baked pear, cocoa and rancio through the aftertaste. Deceptively long. Draws comparisons with Delamain's house style. It gets better with 15-30 minutes air contact and is worth every moment of patience. In short: a very special tribute cognac that's lovely, composed and elegant. 40% Alc./Vol.

    ABV: 40%
The Giraud family have been growing grapes around France since 1650, yet only decided to produce Cognac under their own name in the 1980s. A long time associate of Giraud informed us "He became frustrated selling his thirty-five year old cognacs to Remy-Martin. His cognac was destined to become a part of the blend, Louis XIII [currently selling for around A$3000.] This was a very brave move during such times - he was one of the first to do so, but we are thankful he did, he paved the way for many more to come."

"In the history of LOUIS XIII, it has happened only once before. One unique and exceptional tierçon discovered by Cellar Master, Pierrette Trichet. Marked by extra strength and flavours of unprecedented richness and intensity. "- Remy Martin.

Probably the most exclusive bottling released by any cognac house, ever, Remy Martin's Rare Cask is a confluence of hundreds of years of brandy making prowess. With all of that experience and dedication that goes into crafting the normal Louis XIII, some factors can simply not be controlled by human action. On that very unusual occasion, Louis XIII declares a single cask to be "Rare". In this case the precious spirit was aged for up to a century in casks known as “tierçons”, an extraordinary example of which was discovered by Louis XIII’s cellar master and earmarked for this unparalleled edition. A step ahead of the already incredible standard bottling, Rare Cask arrives at a natural strength of 42.6% from which it takes its name. We're unlikely to encounter a Cognac of this calibre again in the near future. At the heart of the composition are those prized autumn flavours of nuts and dried fruits – the long-aged flavours for which Louis XIII is renowned - but this cask is also blessed with flavours that are all its own, including plum and date, mingling with flavours of gingerbread and prune stone, punctuated by a final touch of tobacco leaf.

Packaged to leave a lasting impression, its fabulously detailed forged-metal 'strongbox' is sealed by a plaque that matches the precious neck chosen for the decanter. The surface of the coffret is patterned with a quadrilobe motif that makes reference to the royal fleur-de-lys of France. Each stunning decanter is fashioned by twenty expert craftsmen from precious black Baccarat crystal, crowned with a 24k rose gold ring at the neck and topped with a black crystal stopper. Global allocations are said to be extremely sparse, with only a few bottles shipped to huge markets like the USA. We have one only available.

A piece of vintage luxury at a more affordable price than the current release. This one packaged to commemorate the end of the 20th century.in a hexagonal, coffin style case in the classic red colouring with gold edging.
