Direct import Maxime Trijol Cognacs

Value for money and Cognac rarely come together. Maxime Trijol is an exception. The house was voted Cognac Producer of the Year at the New York International Spirits Competition in 2016 and 2017 - and for good reason. Their cognacs are surprisingly affordable, without shortchanging when it comes to quality. Since the Trijol family originally settled as growers and distillers in St Martial Sur Né, in the heart of the Cognac region, they have built on their expertise as growers and producers, becoming full time distillers in 1962. This dual facility maximises quality control throughout the entire production process. Big brand houses (Courvoisier, Hennessy, Martell, and Rémy Martin) do very little distilling themselves. Rather, the 5,000 independent farmers in the region create the majority of Cognac in their own pot stills. The large houses then focus on managing the complex processes of storing, maturation, blending and marketing. Remaining an independent family firm, Trijol has twenty 2,500 litre charentais pot stills and is now one of the region's biggest distillers, actually supplying many of the larger houses. More recently, the company has concentrated on releasing its own cognacs, which have quickly established a reputation for high quality.

This release is part of Trijol's "Grande Champagne Collection" which includes six cognacs of varying ages. To seal the deal, it comes handsomely presented in a sleek decanter.

Tasting note: Bright topaz. Excellent glass cling. Opens shy but builds opulence with suggestions of dried fig, nectarine, dates, extra-aged muscat and rancio. Air contact and swirling shifts the bouquet towards orange spice cake, light cinnamon and fruit pastry. Medium to full bodied; sweet oak leads, being momentarily lean, finely tannic; Mid palate bursts with dried apple, pear, fig, nectarine and cream. Comes together beautifully at the finish with vibrant white pepper, cinnamon and lingering cigar box. Impressive length. Beautifully composed XO that continues to evolve with extended breathing. 40% Alc./Vol.

Re-tasted June 2015 [New packaging] Perfect clarity, polished copper coin colour. Rich and robust with scents of roasted nuts, cocoa, cigar box and dates. This is super soft and elegant with dried fruit and sweet spice flavours unfolding with excellent length. Sits so lightly in the mouth yet without any compromise on depth and power – in a word, ‘graceful’. 40% Alc./Vol.

First tasted 2011: Deep copper / brass colour displaying good cling to the sides of the glass. First nosings offer restrained but attractive cocoa and dried fig notes. Ten minutes in the glass opens scents of orange peel, subtle vanilla, roast nuts and cedary oak. Entry is concentrated, soft and plush building with medium dry flavours of spicy dried fruits, raisin and fig. Good balancing acidity. Excellent length. Very long dried apricot / cedar aftertaste with a late dried fig burst. Great value.

    $1079.88 Dozen

A cut above many big brand XOs. Highest recommendation.

Tasting note: Bronze gold in colour, this 100% Grande Champagne VSOP is finer and more elegant on the nose than Trijol's entry level equivalent. Leaning towards exotic notes of nectarine, white peach and cigar box, it's superbly harmonised in the mouth, showing great persistence, climaxing in a medley of dried figs, honey, dark chocolate, orange zest, white pepper and rancio. A refined, elegant VSOP that's as good (or better) than many big brand XOs. Highest recommendation. 40% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the producer... Golden yellow. Vanilla, spice and some dried fruit on the initial aromas. Well-structured body with a light and elegant touch. Finishes well with a little tickle of fire from the spirit. 40% Alc./Vol.

Trijol's 1991 Petite Champagne was an outturn of 499 bottles from two casks (Nos 199 & 550). Bottled in December 2020.

Since the Trijol family originally settled as growers and distillers in St Martial Sur Né, in the heart of the Cognac region they have built on their expertise as growers and distillers, becoming full time distillers in 1962. An independent family firm, Maxime Trijol has twenty 2,500 litre charentais pot stills and is now one of the largest distillers of cognac supplying many of the larger houses. In recent times the company has concentrated on releasing more of its own cognacs, which have been building a great reputation for quality, including rare vintage bottlings.

The soils of Petite Champagne are chalky and of a compact and friable type known as Santonian chalk. This slight difference in soils from Grande Champagne means the region's cognacs tend to be close in style to Grande Champagne, but without the finesse of the latter.

This example is all the more unusual being produced exclusively from fruit sourced from 'Fins Bois' - a lesser known appellation that surrounds all three of the major crus making it the largest zone in the region (354,200ha). Chalky soils over a hard limestone base produce brandies that are known to peak fairly quickly, around 10-12 years, so they're often used to soften the harder edge of the better Cognacs when young.

    Maxime Trijol VSOP Cognac (700ml)
    Cognac, FRANCE
    $69. 99
    Bottle
    $839.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%
Tasting note: Presents the same deep colour as the VS, but with more complexity on the nose: Dried figs, prunes, raisin cake and rum soaked tobacco follow in a silky, medium dry cognac; slightly lighter than the VS, but feels better integrated and offers better length. Sweet spice and oak close the finish. 40% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the producer... Golden yellow. Fruity and floral on the nose and palate, with a long-lasting gaiety. The tannins from the oak have helped it to develop to the beginnings of maturity. A harmonious cognac.

A delightful take on Liqueur immortals like Grand Marnier, Maxime Trijol's recipe blends 80% Orange Liqueur with 20% Cognac. It's the perfect union of oak-aged Cognac and macerated oranges.

Double Gold San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2019.

Notes from the producer... Golden yellow colour, with golden and amber highlights. A bright and clear colour. The nose is lively and very expressive. Orange aromatic complexity is intense, tasty and crisp. The second nose develops on slightly acid notes such as bergamot. The orange flavour is rich and reveals a lovely note of freshness that makes this liqueur attractive. 40% Alc./Vol.

A very special bottling to celebrate 150 years of growing and distilling by the Trijol Family. Trijol has included some of his finest Grande Champagne reserves in order to create a statement piece worthy of six generations of labour. To further emphasise its provenance, it comes traditionally packaged in an 'antique' style waxed-dipped bottle.

Tasting note: Bright topaz / flashes in the glass. Wavers before releasing a stunning perfume running a gamut of all things fruity: dried fig, ripe red fruits, peach and ripe apricot; Further aeration accents honey, vanilla cream, dark chocolate. 5-10 minutes dries the bouquet, adding hints of cedar, cinnamon and nectarine. Super-silky, nuanced and feminine: Mid palate features a burst of dried fig and honey. Graceful and understated, becoming more succulent towards the finish, focusing on stone fruits / fig / apricot. Ends more off-dry and savoury, with hints of orange spice cake, baked pear, cocoa and rancio through the aftertaste. Deceptively long. Draws comparisons with Delamain's house style. It gets better with 15-30 minutes air contact and is worth every moment of patience. In short: a very special tribute cognac that's lovely, composed and elegant. 40% Alc./Vol.
