Aberlour Casg Annamh Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) - Batch 6
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    Reduced from $130.00
    $114. 99
    Bottle
    $1379.88 Dozen
    ABV: 48%

Sheer approachability has helped Aberlour become the most popular whisky in France, where more single malt is consumed than any other country. At around 40%, it's a polite, relaxed and sometimes, slightly wanting tasting experience. As an alternative for those who prefer sherry with a kick, owners Pernod-Ricard introduced the natural strength A'bunadh around 2000. Eighteen years later, Casg Annamh was launched as a French Exclusive in a similar vein (the name translates from the Gaelic as “rare cask”). Also influenced by Oloroso, it's matured in three types of casks: European oak Sherry casks and two different types of American oak . Like A'bunadh, Casg Annamh is batch specific, with six iterations to date, some better than others. Whichever you come across, they're all handsomely packaged with a wax seal stopper, while the extra ABV and zero chill filtration makes a world of difference. 48% Alc./Vol.

A special Amaro to celebrate the 120th anniversary of the founding of the Lucano company. Obtained using an ancient recipe by Cav. Pasquale Vena, and produced using a careful blend of more than 30 herbs including wormwood, gentian and holy thistle. Best enjoyed, neat, with ice or with the addition of orange peel. Excellent for cocktails. 34% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Spicy and lightly smoky with chocolate and cola-like notes. 4.5 stars - diffordsguide.com

The plush palate opens with a burst of dark fruit—plum, dried fig and date, black cherry—leading into hints of espresso and vanilla. Clove and cinnamon bark warm the long, tingly finish. Consider as a dessert sipper. 96 points - Wine Enthusiast, reviewed by: Kara Newman 2023

Ardbeg Smoketrails Manzanilla Edition Single Malt Scotch Whisky (1000ml)
    Islay, SCOTLAND
    Reduced from $310.00
    $269. 99
    Bottle
    $3239.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

The first edition in Ardbeg’s inaugural travel retail series. One litre, 46% NCF.

'Smoketrails' is the name for Ardbeg's new and first-ever collection of single malts exclusively dedicated to the travel market. Launched in late 2022 with annual batches in the pipeline, each edition will be a marriage of Ardbeg aged in American oak with Ardbeg matured in secondary casks sourced from around the world. This is the first edition, employing Manzanilla (dry) Sherry casks from Sanlúcar de Barrameda on Spain’s Atlantic coast. Light and fresh in style, Manzanilla sherries are aged close to the sea and are typically bone dry with a salty tang - well matched to Ardbeg's island profile.

Distillery Manager, Colin Gordon says, “For each Smoketrails release we’ll pack our suitcase and zig zag across the globe in search of new flavour adventures...With a unique batch code on this and future bottlings, we hope Ardbeggians will jump at the chance to get their hands on this delectable, collectable dram when they are on their travels.”

Ardbeg’s Master Distiller, Dr Bill Lumsden adds “In Ardbeg Smoketrails Manzanilla Edition, salty sea spray and deep, nutty notes mingle with pungent aromas of soot, dark chocolate and Brazil nuts. Clouds of pine and fennel fill the senses with notes of saddle soap and aniseed trailing gently behind. All I have to say to anybody who lays their hands on a bottle is… get ready for a smoky blast!” Available at selected airports around the globe, we've sourced a small parcel for Australian devotees who might otherwise miss out. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... I've just seen that this one is still available in travel retail, for a price that's much lower than in regular shops. They were having dozens at Basel airport just last week, for example. It is a vatting of ex-American oak (Heaven Hill?) and ex-manzanilla casks. I remember some superb ex-fino Ardbeg around Feis 2005, but I'm not sure we've already tried some ex-manzanilla 'beg. But was Dr Bill's idea to add saltiness to saltiness? Let's see, while it's mentioned on the label that it should display some 'saddle soap'… Remember horses are another specialty of Jerez… Colour: straw. Nose: frankly, the territory of an (unsherried, ha) Ardbeg and that of some manzanilla are so close to each other that I'm finding this nose particularly tautological. Fresh walnuts shouting out, green apples and lemons, some chalk, a touch of mustard, sea spray, fresh almonds and chalk, then only a wee touch of mutton suet or something like that. Having said all that and while it's classic Ardbeg in my book, it is not really 'big'. Mouth: perhaps a little too much grittiness, fresh oak at first, making it bitterish (bell pepper, walnut skin), but also loads of salt, as expected. It feels young for sure. Cold ashes, lemon skin, tart cider apples, lemon jellybeans… I find it relatively simple, but Ardbeggy enough. Finish: rather long, still salty. Or, let's say it triggers a lot of saltiness. Walnuts and mustard in the aftertaste. Comments: now, what to do with a litre of this, if you've also got a bottle of the superior Ten in your cabinet? And I'm afraid I couldn't recognise any notes of saddle soap, but that is me. Don't get me wrong, it's some very good Ardbeg that we could quaff with langoustines on the shore of the Guadalquivir, in Sanlucar. 86 points - whiskyfun.com

Notes from the producers... Nose: Lemon peel. Gentle smoke, not too peaty, more bonfire than medical. Some fruity notes. Taste: Sweet, toffee notes, milk chocolate, then the citric notes from the nose are coming back. Smoke is rather gentle. Finish: Long. Now reconcilable peaty, yet sweet.

Note: Product has come from a private collection and as such has some minor scuffing/scratches/handling marks. Actual product pictured.

If you love peaty whiskies but don't quite understand why they taste like they do, it's because of peat, or more precisely, peat smoke, which when burnt releases chemicals called phenols. These phenols are absorbed by the malted barley during the drying process in a kiln. The level of phenols is measured in ''PPM' (parts per million) and controlled by the length of time that the barley is exposed to the smoke, the amount of smoke produced and the type of peat used.

Even if 'bogs' are not your thing, peat is actually far more fascinating than first impressions might suggest. It is a relic of the Carboniferous period some 300 million years ago when much of what is now Britain was swampland. As trees, roots, ferns, grasses, animals and even people died or fell into the swamps they were subsumed into the stagnant water and partially decomposed, but did not rot away entirely. Instead an organic fuel formed by their decomposition. Peat is black because of its rich carbon content (the CO2 is not released into the atmosphere as normally takes place in decomposition around oxygen). Yet compared to wood, peat is relatively inefficient to burn. Without a proper furnace, it tends to smoke rather than create much heat.

For a long time a lack of alternative fuel forced 'Highlanders' to burn peat. Coal was simply too expensive for most and there were few trees. The situation began to change around the turn of the 1960's, with the help of technological progress in large industrial scale maltings. It then became possible to produce vast quantities of malted barley without peat. Speyside and Lowland distilleries were amongst the first to change to coke (a high carbon form of coal) as a combustible, as new railway networks to transport the fuel encouraged the transition. Remoter regions like Islay persisted with peat.

Today, there's no question that peat-smoke derived flavours in whiskies are increasingly desirable. Consequently, peat is now used not only on Islay by the likes of Ardbeg, but also on Orkney, in the Highlands, Campbeltown, as well as in Speyside. Peat is usually extracted close to the distillers or maltsters. Distilleries prefer the top part of the bog, because the upper crust of peat found there tends to be 'richer', more rooty and generate more smoke and impart more flavour.

At some stage of his or her drinking career, every hairy chested peat freak has probably wondered "Why don't peaty whiskies all have the same kind of 'peatiness'." Instead, we find that peat comes in a remarkable array of sensory guises, and also contributes an almost oily mouth feel, as well as added depth, richness and sweetness. Its flavours are expressed differently in whiskies from different distilleries and range from notes reminiscent of lanolin, wet wool, iodine, seaweed, bacon, tobacco smoke, engine oil, tar, manure and wet earth.

As much of Scotland is (in parts) covered by a meter-thick layer of peat, it's been supposed that different types of organic matter in the different regions, have created different types of peat which impart, in turn, different flavours to the finished whisky. For example, historically there have been few trees on the Orkney islands so there are no tree roots in the peat, making it lighter and quicker to burn. Whiskies from this area, like Highland Park, tend to have a more lightly smoked flavour than Islay malts. Is this an argument for 'peat' and 'terroir'?

Patrick Brossard of http://www.whisky-news.com recently reported on a study that approaches this question. In 2009, B.M. Harrison and F.G. Priest published an article on the composition of peat in the production of Scotch Whisky and the influence of its geographical source, extraction depth and burning temperature: "Peat samples from four locations (Islay, Orkney, St. Fergus (Aberdenshire), and Tomintoul (Speyside) were analyzed using Curie point pyrolysis in combination with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry".
[As in the simpler process of distillation where small molecules fly out first, followed by the big ones (so alcohol is separated from water), with gas chromatography a sample is heated to evaporation in order to release volatile compounds. Since all the molecules of a given structure will behave more or less identically, they exit the machine collectively and at the same time. As each 'puff' of molecules is released, a computer generated graph peaks corresponding to the most abundant chemical compounds. The higher the peak, the greater the number of molecules of acertain type are present].

"In total, out of the 106 products identified, 92 compounds were having a significant effect on the separation of the four geographical locations. The compounds were broadly split into the following classes: phenolic compounds, carbohydrate derivatives (“sugars”), aromatic compounds, and nitrogen-containing compounds".

"The ratio of phenol derivatives (carbohydrate derivatives to guaiacols, syringols, and phenols) was the major discriminator between the samples of the different geographical regions, explaining more than 60% of the variance. St. Fergus and Islay samples were characterized by high percentages of guaiacols (aromas described as aromatic, phenolic, burnt, woody, bacon, savoury, smoky, and medicinal), syringols (aromas described as aromatic, phenolic, spicy, smoky, baconlike, sweet, medicinal, creamy, meaty, and vanilla), and phenols (aromas described as aromatic, phenolic, burnt, woody, bacon, savoury, smoky, and medicinal) in the pyrolysate [i.e. burnt peat]. Relatively high proportions of carbohydrate derivatives in the [burnt peat] characterized Tomintoul and Orkney samples."

"In the distillate (new make), the origin of the peat could be clearly identified by analytical methods. By sensory analysis (by “human nose”), the spirits using Tomintoul (Speyside) peat were more medicinal than the spirit using Hobbister (Orkney) peat. The level of peat aroma was low in the St-Fergus spirit (Aberdeenshire) despite a high abundance of aromatic peaty aromas, but the spirit was sweet, spicy and medicinal."

The upshot of the study indicates that the source of peat will have an impact on the flavour of the whisky. It's a conclusion which may reignite the debate over Scotch whisky 'terroir' beyond the simplistic Highlands / Islands / Lowlands trichotomy. If for you, that's just all too involved, simply pour yourself a glass of Ardbog and revel in the remarkable synergy that whisky and ancient earth can offer.

This limited edition Ardbeg was matured for ten years in American oak ex-bourbon barrels and Spanish oak manzanilla sherry seasoned butts and bottled without chill filtration. Flawless bright gold appearance. Opening aroma offers up choc fudge and brandy cream, yet with a lovely freshness that accentuates on the second inspection, which, minutes later sees the bouquet lighten slightly and turn more salty, with citrus peel and hints of balsamic. A light entry develops into a concentrated mid palate, superbly balanced for the strength, dry to medium dry, creamy, vanilla laced peat flavours building towards the salty, tangy, gently warming finish. Concludes with dried herb / lavender-like notes and the vanilla / choc fudge returning into the lengthy aftertaste. 52.1% Alc

Other reviews... The follow-up to last year's Ardbeg Day, here's the cult distillery in its funkiest guise with a nose that's reminiscent (I'd imagine) of a frontier trading post: all pitch, furs, and gun oil. Some mint hangs around in the background alongside eucalyptus. This is an earthy, in-your-face Ardbeg with a hint of box-fresh sneakers indicating some youthfulness. The mouth is thick and chewy: wild mint, oily depths, and the slightly manic energy typical of Ardbeg's young. 91 points - whiskyadvocate.com

At 12-14 ppm, Ardmore has always offered a smokey malt, sourcing its peat from Saint-Fergus, a village in Aberdeenshire. Right from the start, this bottling prepares the ground for a tasting whose theme is multi-faceted peat. It was even matured in x-Islay Bourbon casks - and according to the bottlers, fans should find some similarities with Laphroaig. Expect an archetypal Ardmore that's also deeply malty and minerally. Originally an exclusive for the French retailer, La Maison du Whisky. 43% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the bottlers... the unctuous initial nose reveals notes of gum arabica and an oily, floral peat (dandelion). Allowed to breathe, barley grains appear alongside candied lemon and juicy pear. Medicinal and camphoric, gradually it becomes ashy and mineral (slate). With lots of vitality, the attack boasts an impressive herbaceous freshness (mint). The peat is perfectly integrated into the heart of the taste palette. The chiselled start of the finish wavers between tarry and salty (seaweed) flavours. The very expressive empty glass reveals farmyard aromas (straw).

The oldest Arran to date. Now sold out at the distillery.

Arran are one of the first of the 'new wave' of Scottish distilleries to reach maturity. To mark that watershed, they've released 3000 bottles of their oldest expression to date. Now sold out at the distillery, it has been eagerly anticipated by those already enamoured with the superb 18 & 21. And if you're surprised by the price, consider the massive hikes for similar age statements from Macallan, Highland Park, Ardbeg or Balblair et al. and it actually compares very favourably. The 25 year old is set to become an annual offering, although outturns will remain minimal (no doubt they're reserving a portion for even older releases in the future). Impressively housed in a timber presentation case, it comes matured in 35% ex-sherry and 65% ex-bourbon casks, but was also allocated twelve months in first-fill and refill sherry hogsheads. Like most other Arrans, it's bottled at 46% without chill filtration or the addition of any colouring.

Other reviews... The oldest in Arran’s core range has a warm, inviting nose of sweet vanilla, poached pear, and crème caramel, with a flurry of wood spices, ground pepper, and nutmeg grated over rice pudding. Rich and syrupy-textured, with honey, fudge, black pepper, and gentle oak building up to a peak of crystallized ginger followed by Seville orange peel, vanilla, ripe apricot, and apple. A mouth-coating finish of ginger and honeycomb toffee. 93 points - whiskyadvocate.com

...The bottle is superb, the price maybe a little less so. This is a combination of bourbon and oloroso, further married for one year in sherry hogsheads. What's sure is that this is the oldest Arran I've ever tasted. Colour: copper/amber. Nose: starts with a bowl of sour cherries and a clear vinosity, on old barriques and a little balsamico. I'm also finding many red berries, which come totally unexpected, raspberries, mulberries, also rosehip, dried pears, whiffs of dunnage, blood oranges, drops of fino… This is not what I was expecting, on the other hand I think it worked, it's just, well, very singular, with obvious wine impact. Mouth: cherry clafoutis, once again, cherries in kirsch, then mead and triple-sec, elderberry syrup, and a feeling of arrak. Then more blood oranges, more eglantine tea, and just preserved morellos. Are we sure this has never met with a single dollop of pinot noir? Finish: medium, with a little more malt and raisins, café latte, butterscotch… I  short, it fell in line. A salty touch in the aftertaste. Comments: let's keep an open mind, this is not what we were expecting from a new 25 yo, but it's not lacking courage and opinion. The idea was strange but it was well executed. 86 points - whiskyfun.com

Notes from the bottlers... Nose – Rich oak with a gentle nutmeg note. Sweeter aromas of baked ripe figs, sultanas and black cherries. Palate – Fruit cake with toasted almonds and cinnamon. The juicy zestiness of oranges and mandarins mellows perfectly with manuka honey, muscovado sugar, baked apricots and an interesting white pepper note that provides even more complexity. Finish – Creamy and spicy with dark chocolate, walnuts and dark fruits compote.

This is the proper new Balvenie 25, not one of those doublewoods or single barrels, you understand? Colour: gold. Nose: fully Balvenie. Touch of nail polish at first, then mirabelles and quinces, then croissant and brioche, then custard and acacia honey. That's all folks, and that was very much already. Mouth: absolutely splendid, perhaps a tad rougher than earlier vintages (the glorious 1970s) but indeed full of plums, yellow ones, green ones… Quinces are there too, sugarcane as well, tiny notes of Victoria pineapple, then just vanilla and the best part of oak. It is not a very complicated malt whisky, it's even a tad simple, but I find it epitomically Balvenie, which is enough for me. I must be on my lucky day. Finish: lovely finish, creamy, ueber-Balvenie-ish, on preserved mirabelles with just a dash of sawdust. Vanilla and barley syrup in the aftertaste. Comments: close to the core. My main problem is that I cannot not remember the early 1970s Balvenies – and the ones before. Balvenie 'As we get it' anyone? Maybe I need some kind of reset. 88 points - whiskyfun.com

Originally a family of industrialists, the Bisleris have produced this very famous Italian tonic since 1881. It is essentially an aperitif in a herb flavoured, fortified wine base. Its producers recommend its as a blood tonic. Each 30 ml shot contains 5 mg of Iron [from Ammonium Iron (lll) Citrate] and when taken at any time of day, but preferably before a meal, is claimed to maintain normal blood. Ferro China also makes a pleasant drink mixed with mineral water.

One member of the Bisleri family, Franco Bordoni-Bisleri (born 1913), was a famous Italian flying ace. The badge on the Ferro-China bottles was a lion so this was the image painted on most of his aircraft alongside the word “Robur” meaning “strength” in Latin. Giuseppe Caffo built his small distillery in 1915 with the intention of creating the finest liqueurs from native Italian aromatic fruits and medicinal herbs. Over the decades, the operation has expanded considerably while remaining owned and operated by the family, who still employ traditional production methods and adhere to the highest quality ingredients.

The company's 'del Capo' brand of Amaro is considered the premier expression from Calabria. While standard amaro ingredients include some combination of juniper berries, laurel leaves, ginger, orange peel, anise, mint, elder (sambuco), cardamom, saffron, gentian, cinchona, citrus zest, bitter orange, sage, angelica, licorice, chamomile, cloves and cinnamon, this particular blend employs 29 herbs and roots and is slightly less bitter than most Amaros. The intense, earthy notes of herb and quinine make it ideal as a refreshing aperitif or digestif.
Serve it on ice with a twist or mix with soda as a "Cola Calabrese". 35% Alc./Vol.

The facility operates three Coffey stills and one patent still with nine columns for producing neutral spirits such as gin and vodka. Whiskies produced here are mainly distilled from wheat then matured in ex-Bourbon casks. They tend towards light, fruity styles, worth introducing non-Scotch whisky drinkers to. 40% Alc./Vol.

Easy on entry buidling to medium bodied, off-dry flavours of succulent fig, raisin slice and white pepper. Aftertaste nicely counterpoints the mid palate with balancing acidity and fine tannins. Dried fruits, vanilla and subtle spices persist, rounding off the Cognac in elegant fashion. Another winning Borderies expression. 40% Alc./Vol.

Vintage Armagnacs are exclusively the product of the year mentioned on the label. Only exceptional years are selected and at Chabot, only twenty four "millesimes" have been produced since 1960. The rarity of these bottlings make them sought-after. Comes packaged in a wooden presentation box. Mahogany- sienna brown in colour, the 1968 is masculine in style offering powerful aromas of coffee bean, creme caramel and cocoa with subtle dried fruit notes emerging after time in the glass. Quite spicy and warm, the fruit has almost completely dissipated with wood derived flavours dominating. Mild, drying mocha and dark chocolate aftertaste. Earlier bottling tasted. 40%Alc./Vol.

Tasting note: Deep gold ochre / mahogany colour. Sensuous aromatics include creme caramel, roasted almonds, coffee bean and vanilla notes - quite feminine when compared to the ’68 and certainly more layered, with time in the glass bringing out aromas of dried fruits (dates and dried apricot). Dried fruit repeats on the palate; vanilla and spice flavours are carried by the gently warming spirit. Finishes long and dry with a subtle dried apricot and roast almond fade. A lovely Armagnac, no question. 40%Alc./Vol.

Now discontinued, we have the last stocks of Chatelle's older sibling. Aged in 'small barrels' and presented in a 'Zenith bottle' (or decanter), the youngest brandy in the blend is around six years old. It's a tasty, vibrant style with an aged grappa-like feel offering aromas of fruit cake, brandy cream sauce, light vanilla and wood spice. The flavours are robust, hinting at ripe grapes, fruit bread, citrus zest and oak spice with a zesty, tingling, pomace-like finish. The XO classification makes it a value buy, good enough for sipping straight from a warmed glass and ideal for mixing tasty brandy-based cocktails. 40% Alc./Vol.

Launched in 1992, this is one of Poland's super premium brands made exclusively from Stobrawa potatoes, mostly sourced from nearby the distillery to maximise freshness. The vodka is distilled four times following a six century old tradition. Founder and CEO, Tadeusz Dorda sums up the brand's philosophy: "We believe that the definition of vodka – “a flavorless, odorless, neutral spirit without distinctive character, aroma, taste or color” – is simply incorrect. We also reject the popular notion that all vodkas are the same. The flavor profile of our marquee product, Chopin Potato Vodka, is distinctively creamy with earthy notes and sets the standard in its category."

Master Distiller, Waldemar Durakiewicz, has worked with the Dorda family (who still own and run the company) since he graduated from university in 1978. Named after Poland's favourite son, the vodka is packaged in a frosted, cork-finished bottle which has since been copied by the likes of Belvedere Vodka and others.

Other reviews… Clear. Clean flinty aromas gives way to a supple, silky, light-to-medium bodied palate with confectioner's sugar, lemon zest and mineral flavors and a pointed peppery fade. A smooth and elegant vodka for martinis. 40%Alc./Vol.

The first sniffings unearth a soft, slightly sour and vegetal aroma; more time adds minor scents of ash and unsmoked cigarette. The bittersweet palate entry taste flashes on cocoa bean and sap; at midpalate toasty, sooty flavors of tobacco leaf, wood smoke, wood resin and vanilla are found. Ends up semisweet, succulent and roughly spirity. 85-89 points - wineenthusiast.com

“Potato vodkas have never been as well-received as their grain-based competitors, but Chopin—which appeared on the American market in 1997—should go a long way toward changing their lowbrow reputation. It's the smoothest vodka we tried, with a slight oiliness (specific to potato vodkas) that cut beautifully against the briny funk of black caviar and held its own against the thickest black bread I'd been able to find. We found Chopin itself to be 'slightly sweet' and 'well-rounded' with 'perhaps a hint of apple.' Chopin also had a 'medium-length, pleasing burn,' but 'very little aftertaste—it's remarkably clean.' To top it off, Chopin's tall frosted bottle was the prettiest we'd seen...the panel unanimously called Chopin 'far and away the best vodka we tried.” – Alex Abramovich, “Hit me With Your Best Shot”, Slate Magazine, 2004.

Whereas most vodkas are produced from common starches such as wheat or potatoes, Ciroc is made from Ugni Blanc grapes left on the vine for extended ripening. The fruit is sourced from Gaillac in the Southwest of France, (nestled between Roussillon and the Pyrenees in the South and the Gorges of the Tarn in the East). After harvesting, the juice is pressed, cold fermented then distilled five times - the fifth time using specially-designed, traditional copper pot-stills. 37.5% Alc./Vol.

Benrinnes is on the rise these days with indies bringing it to the attention of whisky lovers globally. That's justified by a typically high quality output, nowhere better demonstrated by young bottlings. In fact, it's doubtful a more youthful expression than this has ever been released. Tea biscuits, sponge cake and sweet malt are underscored by hints of apple pie and pineapple pudding. There's a pleasant tartness at the finish that adds authenticity and bite to the fruitiness. You can improve the balance with a splash of water, but unadulterated, this Benrinnes already boasts impressive body and a surprisingly creamy mouthfeel. Matured in a refill Oloroso Sherry octave. 58.8% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

The effortless delivery and sheer drinkability make amends. Salt'n'pepper cracker biscuits adds a nice touch to the oily finish, too. Ideal pre-dinner dram. This will be new to most whisky lovers. Given the recent boom in both blends and single malts, companies like Pernod Ricard have been challenged to invest in expanding existing capacity or in building new projects, like Dalmunach. Established in 2015 on the site of the now closed 'Imperial Distillery' and named for a nearby pool in the River Spey, Dalmunach is one of the industry's babies but with a nod to the past - several of Imperial’s key design features have been adapted into the design. Pernod Ricard is the parent company of Chivas, so no doubt the majority of Dalmunach's output will be making its way into leading blends like Chivas, Ballantine’s and Royal Salute. From a 2015 distillation, Claxton's have bottled up a youngster, with an added twist of been matured in a red wine barrique. 50% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... Right, a red wine finish, so I doubt we'll manage to get to the core of Chivas's Dalmunach today. Colour: salmon/blush wine. Thighs of a moved nymph, as 18th century painters would have said. Nose: fun. Burnt strawberry cake, natural rubber, Lambrusco and stewed peaches. Whiffs of peonies. With water: a little smoke, hints of bay leaves, Timut pepper, leaven, baker's yeast…Mouth (neat): but-this-is-good. Strawberry cake, touch of rubber once more, vine peaches and now wham-bam raspberries and cassis. Phew. With water: pretty good! No deviant berries, rather more malt, kriek, maraschino and just one goji berry. For glory. Finish: medium, perhaps more on blood oranges, with some terry pepper and some discreet cloves. Comments: this has been done with restraint. Extremely far from the disaster I was expecting, even more so after I had checked the colour. 84 points - whiskyfun.com

1964 Douglas Laing & Co. XOP Xtra Old Particular Dumbarton 55 Year Old Single Cask Limited Release Cask Strength Single Grain Scotch Whisky (700ml)

    Reduced from $3,999.00
    $2499. 00

    ABV: 44.6%

Beyond investment grade - now more a museum piece, and deserving of a place in any serious whisky collection.

From the long closed Dumbarton plant, this is all the more unusual for its extraordinary age. Grandfather Dumbartons are frequently off the charts when it comes to ratings in the single grain category. This is definitely one of the oldest, if not the oldest ever bottled upping the ante on a 1975 Gordon & Macphail 45 YO released earlier in 2022. Beautifully presented in a heavyweight bottle housed in a wooden box, Douglas Laing are offering 215 bottles to the world, drawn from one refill hogshead at natural strength with no chill filtration. Anticipate aromas and flavours of Scottish honey, maple syrup, candied apples, ginger, nutmeg and milk chocolate with a lengthy poached pear, pistachio and marmalade finish. Extremely limited stocks. 44.6% Alc./Vol.

Also known as 'Inverleven', Dumbarton was built in 1938, just south of the Highland border near Glasgow and for a while was the largest operation of its kind. Classified as a lowlander by Michael Jackson, production was predominantly set aside for the Ballantine's blends. When bottled by Indies, Dumbarton is typically the label for grain whisky. Inverleven the single malt, but it's not a rule. Nowadays stocks are "undeniably rare". The notable feature of the plant was its American-style stainless steel columns (rather than the traditional Coffey stills). A focus on maize, meant its spirit was rather heavy in character. In 1956 a third Lomond still was added with an attached rectification column designed to produce different styles of spirit. The distillery was decommissioned in 1985, though its column still was salvaged by Bruichladdich to produce its now famous 'Botanist gin'.

We've only managed to secure a handful of Braevals in the past, so we jumped on this well-aged expression as soon as we saw it. Located in the far south of the Speyside region, Braeval shares the honour of being the joint highest distillery in Scotland, along with Dalwhinnie. The house style is unpeated, light and floral. This is one of 292 released under Douglas Laing's Old Particular label, charged from a Sherry butt, distilled in 2001 and bottled in 2019 at high strength without chill filtration. Serge Valentin at whiskyfun.com summed up a 1997 D.L. bottling of the same age and maturation as "...a solid and honest malty Speysider with good oomph." Notes from the Laings describe aromas and flavours of Turkish Delight, marmalade, milk chocolate and spices with a strawberry and oak quality through the finish. 48.4% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Expect immediately oceanic, West Coast of Scotland character, with enticing yet subtle phenols coming through. Highland glory in a bottle! Distilled one year after Edradour was bought out by Andrew Symington, this version, which has reached maturity, should be magnificent in both concentration and mouthfeel. Rested in first-fill sherry cask #926 for seventeen years before decanting on the 25th of August 2021, 674 bottles are on offer globally. We have secured a small allocation. Overseas demand for gems like this suggests they are heading into collector territory. 56.6% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... Once more The Edradour proves that it can provide beautifully composed, well-aged, sherry-driven but not overly-sherry profile whisky. This release is mature, round, mellow, interesting, well-balanced, and multi-layered, and the only thing it lacks is more nuances/depths. It remains as such as an example of a classic, sherry-matured highland whisky with no flaws. - whiskybase.com

    $779.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Stemming from Mexico, El Ron Prohibido is matured in a 12-year old solera composed of barrels that previously held sweet raisin wine. The story goes that this rum used to be served to sailors in Mexico, but they all got so drunk that the captains made it illegal to serve! Hence the name 'El prohibido' - the forbidden rum. Nosing finds hints of balsamic over richer scents of candied orange, choc-chip cookie, praline, chico lollies and dilute molasses. Five minutes sweetens the aroma and shifts the emphasis to sticky date pudding. Light to medium bodied, off-dry delivery. Coffee milk, caramel fudge and lingering mocha flavours are nicely counterpointed by subtle bitter chocolate in the aftertaste. An atypical style with a likeable cocoa / mocha accent. Would work well with dessert cocktails. 40% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the bottler: “In 1700, Spanish ships arrived to the colonies in the New World loaded with products from Spain. One popular product was sweet wine stored in barrels, which were later emptied after use. These empty barrels were filled with Chinguirito, which is rum that was produced in Mexico and shipped back to Spain, it absorbed wood flavours and aroma from the sweet wine barrels, which gave it very special characteristics. The resulting product became very popular in Spain and local producers saw it as a threat to the sales of their products. Consequently, the King of Spain prohibited the production of this rum in the New World. Chinguirito was also known as Habanero because the last stop on the way back to Spain from the New World was Habana, Cuba.”

Fuyu means "Winter" in Japanese. This three year old blend is a run of around 6000 bottles made from 50% malt and 50% corn plus a little wheat from Honshu island. Initially aged in American oak barrels, before bottling it was transferred into Mizunara casks for six months, adding those elusive characteristics that makes this wood prized (and expensive). Suntory began to experiment with Japanese Oak (Quercus mongolica) after the Second World War when supplies of foreign oak were difficult to source. It made a far from ideal vessel: Mizunara's loose grains tended to cause leakage, and also created challenges in terms of timber selection and cooperage. Blenders at the time had few kind words to say about the wood. It's scarcer than European and American oak, notoriously expensive, and to top it off, the trees are harvested at around 200 years old (compared to around 75 for American/European oak).

For drinkers, the obvious question is "Does Mizunara oak give a distinctive flavour to whisky?" The consensus is that it tends to offer a more definite coconut aroma. Other sources suggest the wood contributes attractive sandalwood notes.  According to the producers, in this bottling, expect notes of coconut, caramel, smoke, and cooked fruit. 45% Alc./Vol.

    ABV: 48%

A character-filled no age-statement release named in celebration of distillery's co-founders, the Manson Brothers. Consider this the everyday drinker in the current Glen Garioch stable. The nose has a slightly citrusy-acidic lift before tea-biscuits and vanilla malt come to the fore. That characteristic is repeated on the palate with a grassy-fruity-peppery overlay to the cereal and honey sweetness. It's intense and assertive and shows off the typical distillery character, finishing with hints of brandy and fruit mince pie. Proofed to 48% ABV (higher than the average 43% to 46%) and non-chill filtered - which is unusual for entry level malt - it adds up to solid buying.

Other reviews... Butterscotch, vanilla, pepper, and citrus fruit emerge on the nose. A nutty, peppery palate features orchard fruits, chile spice, and a subtle meatiness. Lemon and oak tannins in the medium-length finish. 90 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: Gavin Smith 2020

...Impressively fruity and chewy; some serious flavour profiles there. 87.5 points - Jim Murrays Whisky Bible 2021

...We first tried this expression when it came out in 2009 (WF 80), time to revisit it. OH and it’s pretty cheap for a late 18th century vintage, isn’t it ;-). Colour: deep gold. Nose: it’s a rather leafy and grassy one, with pretty high oak extraction, and heavy notes of porridge and raw malt, as well as a grassy smokiness. Dairy cream, a fresh loaf of wholegrain bread, and only after a good five minutes, much more vanilla and light syrups (corn). Leaven. Looks like the distillate was young, and the oak pretty active. Mouth: tastes a bit like if it was hesitating between the distillery’s modern fruity style, and its smokier past, but that would be a grassy smoke once again. Quite some pepper, cut grass, leaves, apple peels, the whole remaining rather bitter and curiously unsexy given its positioning. A lot of green oak and quite some yeast too. Finish: long, peppery, sharp, leafy. Still not very sexy. Bitter and sour aftertaste. Comments: it remained a challenging dram in my book, much grassier than I remembered. 78 points - whiskyfun.com

Gold - Scotch Single Malt - Highland - 2017, International Wine & Spirit Competition

Gold - Single Malt Scotch - to 12 Yrs - 2013, San Francisco World Spirits Competition

After closing for two years in the mid-1990s, Glen Garioch reopened in 1997, switching from using its own peated, floor-malted barley to commercial unpeated malt. Doing so it maintained many of the best characteristics of the pre 1995 output, including rich cereal notes, a full, brawny mouthfeel, bolstered by a decent amount of spice. The new approach sees the entire range bottled at a surprisingly high 48% ABV (or cask strength) and even the entry level whiskies come non-chill filtered. Those who have kept Glen Garioch as their own little secret know the quality is already very good, but it's set to get even better. With a nod to the old ways, they're reintroducing floor maltings, installing direct-fired heating on the wash still, and increasing fermentation times. These developments will see Glen Garioch join the ranks of a small band of revered traditionalists, like Balvenie, Highland Park and Springbank.

A perfect excuse to get acquainted with Springbank's nearest neighbour.

West Highlanders produce many of Scotland's most charismatic malts, led by Oban and Ben Nevis and joined by the Campbeltown community further south west. Springbank is legendary, but there's another Campbeltowner on the rise: Glen Scotia. One of the country's smallest distilleries, the core range is the realm of supermarkets in Australia (though the quality is generally good). That leaves others to source the 'proper stuff'. In this exclusive bottling, you get the chance to try Glen Scotia in all of its unpeated glory: Young and feisty, but already distinctive and most importantly, uncut.

Cask No.19/660-2 was a first-fill Tawny Port hogshead, which has no doubt contributed to the whisky's auburn / polished mahogany colour. In the absence of peat, Glen Scotia's profile can fall somewhere between nutty and fruity. Here, both aspects vie for your attention. The aroma opens peppery, then nutty and gingery with a twang of sulphur and sea breeze lending a coastal edge. 4-5 minutes releases sweeter scents of spiced pears and cinnamon apples over earthier, root vegetable-like notes. The palate is intense and long, unfolding with ginger snaps, spiced apple and salted dark chocolate in a tactile, even slightly 'gritty' delivery. That light sulphur note returns, but adds complexity rather than detracting (those with the 'sulphur gene' will find some satisfaction here). Throat lozenges - think Fisherman's Friends - round off a powerful, heartwarming finish. There's little trace of the port cask, instead what's highlighted is yet another fascinating West Highland make. If you're sulphur sensitive, add water. Those notes dissipate and the profile harmonises in a contrasting and beautiful way.

With just over a kilometre between them, speculation as to whether Glen Scotia will be the next Springbank is inevitable. Given the distillery's versatility and quality of output, the potential is there, but it probably won't balloon anytime soon (then again, just a few years ago many seasoned whisky lovers were oblivious to Springbank...) Place your bets. Right now, here's a perfect excuse to get better acquainted with Glen Scotia. 313 bottles for Australia only. 53.3% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

New vintage just landed. "...excellent young sherried Glenfarclas." - whiskyfun.com

Although it's not certain when this series started, there have been a number of annual Christmas bottlings from Glenfarclas. Through the 1980s they were cask strength and came with big age statements. More recent bottlings have landed at approximately ten years of age. The 2010 edition had and outturn 5,400 bottles. All the right ingredients such as 100% maturation in Oloroso Sherry casks, zero chill filtration and a 46% ABV add up to a quality limited edition that's more than just a label change. Some will stash this away in collections, but we'd like to think most bottles will get opened and shared in the spirit for which they were intended. Whiskyfun's enthusiastic notes below. Distilled December 2010 / bottled 2022. Probably a European exclusive, though not confirmed. One shipment only.

Other reviews... Aged in oloroso sherry. Aren't we a bit late once more? I'm noticing that they keep calling themselves 'a Highland'. Colour: full gold. Nose: very similar whisky, this one being just a notch nuttier and with more oranges. Perhaps…. We're extremely close, nonetheless. In cases like this one, the taster must be careful not to swap his/her glasses, or everything's ruined. Mouth: ditto. You would almost believe this was the same batch, but we won't complain, it's excellent young sherried Glenfarclas. Finish: perhaps a little more chocolate and fig jam? Comments: merry Christmas (what?) 86 points - whiskyfun.com

Other reviews... Following a decade in bourbon barrels, Lasanta is finished for 2 years in oloroso and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks. Caramel, milk chocolate, and hazelnuts merge on the nose with the spicy dried fruit and orange notes associated with sherry wood maturation. Spicy sultanas, and damsons on the full, sweet palate, with more caramel, milk chocolate, nutmeg, and oak. The finish is long and smooth, with dark chocolate and wood spices.

[2010 bottling] Gold ochre/polished brass appearance. The opening scents of muted rubber band and pickled onion are a little off key so we'll let this sit. Three minutes after the first pour, the aroma hasn't really budged dramatically except for the addition of spiced raisin cake. Final pass finds the sultana / dried berry characteristics accented. A light and silky entry develops into a semi-sweet ginger, vanilla and raisin cake profile. Some flashes of sulphur. Finishes a little hot with the spicy red fruits persisting and traces of pickled onion in the fade. 89 points 43% Alc./Vol.

The premium rum category continues to grow at around 6% year over year. Papa Seal Single Barrel Bermuda Rum is part of that movement. This rare release pays homage to the brand’s time-tested traditions. A family-owned business for eight generations, Goslings has remained committed to honoring blending and aging techniques that have been passed down for over 165 years.

Launched as an annual release in the USA in 2018, each bottle of Papa Seal features its barrel number, bottle number, and bottling date hand-written. Each release will comprise around 1500-2500 bottles. The rum itself is a blend of column and pot still molasses rums aged in medium char bourbon barrels and reported to be anything from 8 -20 years old. Due to the nature of single barrel releases, slight variations in flavour are to be expected.

Awarded 92 Points by the Tasting Panel and named as #1 Aged Rum in the world by the Caribbean Journal.

Other reviews... "Molasses, vanilla bean and caramel all shine through on the nose, along with brown butter pound cake and caramelized bananas. The palate offers dark brown sugar with cinnamon and cloves, along with milk chocolate and more vanilla. The finish showcases resonating cola spice, with molasses and chocolate syrup. Whether you know one or are one, every Old Parr deserves a blend as good as this! In Jim Murray's words, "blending Parr excellence!"

Usually available at Duty Free stores only, Old Parr is named after Tom Parr (pictured on the label), once reputed to be the oldest man in England. Launched in 1909, the brand later found success in export markets such as Japan, Mexico and South America where it was easily identified in its distinctive dimpled and rounded square bottle. The basis of the blend today is Cragganmore, however Glendullan has also been a major component since World War II.

Tasting note: Deep gold / bright copper penny colour. An attractive mix of cocoa, vanilla and breakfast fruit toast with exposure drawing out a fruit'n'nut chocolate aspect. Concentrated for the genre, with a spicy backbone that includes muesli, dried grass and light stewed fruit flavours, ending honeyed yet fresh, grainy, peppery and with excellent length. Quite richly styled. Gets better each time you taste it. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Perhaps on about the fourth or fifth mouthfeel, the penny drops that this is not only exceptionally good whisky; it is blending Parr excellence. 91.5 points- Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2016

Golden amber color. Aromas of honeyed nut toast and cereal with a soft, dry-yet-fruity light-to-medium body with a vanilla toffee and pepper finish. A very pleasant, easy-going blend. International Review of Spirits Award: Silver Medal

This gorgeous little Balmenach is a bit of a novelty having been matured in a fresh port pipe (most arrive from Sherry or Bourbon casks). It's high strength, but the port input will make it more approachable, likely delivering lots of cherry and chocolate flavours. Only a handful have made it to our shores. 58.8% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

An unusual single cask, bottled at a high ABV but not cask strength. Situated on the River Spey in the very heart of Speyside, the Balmenach distillery was an illicit operation when it started producing in 1801. It wasn't until 1824 that James MacGregor, the original founder and local farmer decided to licence his “peat shed” as a distillery. It was closed in 1993, and was bought by Inverhouse Distillers Ltd in December 1997. Production restarted in March 1998. This edition from Hart Brothers promises a lightly coloured malt, suggesting it was matured in a Bourbon cask. Expect something a little citrusy with a hint of ginger and green apples. More than likely this is not chill filtered, however it's not stated on the label. 50% Alc./Vol.
