Tokay / Topaque

Due to its similarity to the Hungarian term 'Tokaji', EU regulations saw the name Tokay phased out on Australian wine labels in 2016. Now referred to as Topaque, these Muscadelle-based fortifieds are slightly lighter than muscat, offering flavours of candied fruits, honey, toffee and 'cold tea'. Examples from Rutherglen are labelled under four descriptors marking a progression in richness, complexity and intensity of flavour: Rutherglen aged 3-5 years. Classic 6-10 years. Grand 11-19 years. Rare 20+ years. Try Tokays with fruit based desserts, soft cheeses, chilled as an aperitif or as an after dinner drink with coffee.

    Notes sourced from Bullers....

The Victoria Topaque (aka Tokay) is a blend of younger material, from the vineyards of the Swan Hill winegrowing region. The Tokay style is a little lighter in flavour intensity when compared with the better known fortifieds such as Muscat and Tawny. For this reason it offers an interesting alternative dessert wine to round off a fine meal.

Orange/brown colour. Sweet vanilla essence on the nose with developed fruit characters. Youthful fresh palate flavours of toffee and a juicy rich texture. Sweet clean finish. 18% Alc./Vol.

Deep olive-brown; a wonderful example of muscadelle/topaque, with all the cold tea, butterscotch, Christmas cake and burnt toffee expected of the variety at its zenith. I have to admit to a special love of topaque, while recognising the greatness of the muscat Rutherglen makes.

Medium-deep brown colored, the NV Grand Rutherglen Topaque gives tantalizing aromas of molasses, roasted walnuts, coffee cake, liquored raisins, earth and baking spices with a hint of chocolate. Very, very sweet, crisp and rich, it offers a wonderful array of spice and dried fruit layers with a very long finish. Drink it now.

Each vintage the tokay grapes are left on the vine to fully ripen until raisined and laden with natural sugar. The resulting wine is then blended with wines from previous vintages to produce a consistent house style.Deep, brilliant old gold colour. The nose displays toffee, honey and cold tea characters which combine to produce the unique character of Rutherglen Tokay. Toffee and tea leaf characters predominate on the front of the mouth with a cleansing hint of spirit and old oak on the finish. A heavenly match with rich steamed puddings, caramel desserts, chocolates or as an after dinnerdrink with coffee. 17.0% alcohol volume.

Displaying a lighter amber hue than the Muscat, the non-vintage Tokay is more elegant, not as sweet (205 grams of residual sugar per liter), but unctuous, long, and fragrant, revealing hints of Chinese black tea, toffee, and marmalade. This cuvee is based on 20-25-year old soleras.

A light, finer cousin of Muscat, Topaque (Tokay) is produced from Muscadelle grapes.

Semi translucent onion brown colour with an olive green hue. Spicy dried raisin, toffee and honey aromatics fill the nostrils followed by hints of tea and marmalade. Mouth coating flavours of honey and dried raisins marry beautifully to the spirit with toffee, marmalade and notions of tea bags also present. Very luscious mouthfeel finishing perhaps a shade drier than the Muscat. Long aftertaste of dried raisins, honey, toffee infusions, marmalade and subtle tea.

Has a distinctive yellow-gold colour, different to that of all other Rutherglen topaques; a classic array of cold tea leaf aromas joining with caramel, shortbread biscuit and toffee flavours; it is somehow brighter and crisper than most other Rutherglen topaques, yet does not sacrifice complexity. 500ml.

    Notes sourced from Chambers.

Muscat and Muscadelle (Tokay) are as original to Australia as kangaroos. Nowhere else in the world are the grapes treated this way, and the Chambers' family have been making wines in Rutherglen since 1858.

As there is no irrigation the vines, some 90 years old, produce low tonnages with wonderful concentrated flavour. This sweet wine is full of complex fruit flavours and once opened, does not deteriorate and will allow months of sipping pleasure. Serve as an aperitif or after dinner drink.
