Tawny & Ruby Port

Unlike Vintage Port, Tawny Port is ready to drink as soon as it's bottled. It won't improve further in your cellar. Tawnies are usually matured for about 5- 12 years, and the longer they're left in barrel, the more redness is oxidised out turning them 'tawny' (i.e.- onion brown). In theory, the longer Tawny Port is aged in cask, the more stable it will be when you open it. Ruby Ports are young, fresh and fruity wines for early drinking. We also occasionally stock White Port, hard to find, but delicious served chilled as a long drink with tonic water, ice and a twist of lemon.

Maturation in old oak casks for many years has changed this wine from bright red to the tawny hues it exhibits today. With this slow transformation in colour has come also a change in flavour to the complex, rich and satisfying characters of a mature tawny. This wine is blended from stocks of many vintages held at Bullers Rutherglen cellars. The aim of blending is to provide a balance between the ‘rancio’ characters of an old wine and the freshness of younger wines.

Deep tawny/red colour with red/orange tints. On the nose there are developed toffee/rancio characters. The palate is complex with rich spicy fruit flavours. Hints of toffee. The middle palate is redolent of ripe fruit with chocolate/liquorice notes. 18% alcohol volume.

Fonseca was founded in 1822, when Manuel Pedro Guimaraens acquired control of the Fonseca & Monteiro Company through the purchase of the majority of the Fonseca holdings. As a condition of the sale of his shares to Guimaraens, the departing Fonseca stipulated that his name be retained with the brand.

    Absolutely superb!

For political reasons, not long after this purchase, Manoel Pedro Guimaraens was forced to flee Portugal hidden in an empty port wine barrel. He settled in England, where his company remained based until 1927, when the headquarters of the firm returned to Portugal. There remains a remarkable continuity of winemaking within this prestigious house, with Guimaraen's great-great-great grand son, David Guimaraens now responsible for the wines.

Semi translucent deep onion brown colour with onion brown olive green hue. The nose displays a superb refined old brandy spirit top note followed by rancio characters and complexing almond and hazelnut end notes. On the palate there’s flavours of dried raisins, Christmas cake and marzipan followed by some walnut and hazelnut characters with a strong rancio, old brandy spirit overlay. Dry finish with superb spirit integration and an exceptionally long nutty rancio, Christmas cake and marzipan aftertaste.

My favourite sub-category of tawny as this combines the freshness of youth with complexity of age: lovely reddish-tawny hue with a toffee and dried citrus character on the nose and palate, now smooth and silky with creamy texture (the concentration of age), the sweet fruit (that is the hallmark of Graham’s) offset by a streak of fresh acidity on the finish. A seamless melange of glorious flavours.

Pale-medium tawny amber. Curry spice, dark chocolate and clove oak. Good freshness, bringing some dried red and black fruit to support the spice and dark-chocolate style. Long, smoky, dark-chocolate finish with quite well-integrated alcohol.

Dow's are historic producers of long lived, impressively structured Ports, sourced from several exceptional quality vineyards around the Douro. Their house style tends to be drier, more focussed, and aromatic.

Produced from traditional Portuguese varietals and made exclusively from grapes sourced only from the highest classification vineyards. These wines are barrel-aged for at least 10 years in Dow's coastal cellars, concentrating and transforming the wine gradually over time. Despite the extended aging, the wine retains its bright fruit flavours, but gains an impressive amount of complexity.

Dow's are historic producers of long lived, impressively structured Ports, sourced from several exceptional quality vineyards around the Douro. Their house style tends to be drier, more focussed, and aromatic.

Produced from traditional Portuguese varietals and aged in seasoned oak casks for an average of 3 years, while most other producers age their wines in steel tanks, Dow’s goal is to offer the extra complexity that oak can provide. Ruby Port tends to have more youthful fruit flavours, and is therefore ready to be enjoyed straight away, rather than the cellaring that Vintage Ports require.

The NV 30 Years Tawny Port was bottled in 2013 with a bar-top cork and 125 grams per liter of residual sugar. This is smoother and more harmonious than the Dow this issue, a contrast in house styles. If the Dow's this issue often seemed stern, tight and brooding, this is sexy, sunny and lively, with a burst of sugar on the finish. It starts a little understated and certainly elegant, but it gathers strength and length on the finish. Supple on the first pour, it then adds a touch of brandy, a hit of sugar and a lot of dark chocolate on the finish—just to remind you that this is indeed an old, complex Tawny. The next day, it is beautiful, focused, well balanced and precise. The lifted fruit seems to last indefinitely on the palate. After a week or so, it was darker and more intense. As always, these hold indefinitely in the bottle, barring cork failures, but they are not really meant to be held. Drink 2018 - 2060.

The nose is magnificent with very intense aromas of marmalade, raisins, fine old brandy and powerful rancio character. Wonderful, wonderful sniffing! The palate is an explosion of flavours dominated by caramel and toffee over a very powerful rancio background, intermeshed with flavours of old brandy and marmalade. Incredible depth and intensity. Robert Parker Review:
Yalumba is a fabulous source of antique fortifieds that often sell for a song. The non-vintage Museum 50 Year Old Antique Tawny is spectacular. Readers who love the smell and taste of maple syrup, melted caramel, toffee, and pruny, berry fruit will adore this fragrant, medium amber-colored, full-bodied, unctuous, fortified treasure. None of these Australian fortifieds improve in the bottle, but they rarely change and can be kept for a long time. Once opened, they should be consumed within 4-7 days.
