Muscat

Of more than 200 Muscat grape varieties, only one is used to make Rutherglen Muscat - 'Muscat a Petits Grains Rouge' (aka Rutherglen Brown Muscat). Rarely produced as a single vintage wine, Rutherglen Muscats are blends composed from large cellar inventories and labelled under four descriptors marking a progression in richness, complexity and intensity of flavour: Rutherglen aged 3-5 years. Classic 6-10 years. Grand 11-19 years. Rare 20+ years. Pair these stunning wines with blue cheeses, quince paste and freshly shelled nuts.

And so the journey starts in the classification system, this the first tier, a youthful style with a pale amber hue; lighter on the palate but with plenty of flavour from big fat juicy raisins, fresh brewed black tea with honey, butter scotch, lemon toffee and a floral lift. Just like chewy toffee for adults. 375ml.

An Outstanding Example of Rutherglen Muscat! All Saints Estate is one of Australia's original wineries, established in 1864, by two enterprising Scots, George Sutherland Smith and John Banks. Now owned by Brown Brothers the winery has fortified material up to 80 years old which form the basis of many blends.

Very deep walnut brown colour with deep olive, walnut hue - showing considerable bottle age. Superb nose of toffee, raisin, rancio, and raisin cake. Complex, mouthfilling, luscious palate. Flavours of orange marmalade, honey and raisins, filling the palate with the viscous texture of oil. Clean finish. Very long aftertaste of honey, raisins and toffee.

Brothers RICHARD AND ANDREW BULLER are continuing the great fortified wine making tradition established by their father and grandfather. We first met the Buller family in the mid 70’s and pioneered the sale of their fortified wines in Melbourne. Today the brothers enjoy an international reputation for their fortified’s, largely enhanced by Andrew’s winemaking experience with TAYLORS (the famous Port producers) in Portugal. Deep sienna brown colour with olive hue. Lifted nose, with aroma of honey, ripe raisins, hints of toffee and fine old brandy spirit. The palate is rich with luscious honeyed raisin flavours dominant, followed by a layer of spice and orange rind. Clean finish, with long aftertaste of honey, raisins, toffee and orange marmalade.

As with all the Buller Muscats, the grapes to make this wine are picked very late, ensuring a high level of sweetness in the finished wine. This coupled with Muscat’s typically raisiny flavour provides a luscious dessert wine. Winemakers the world over use Muscat grapes to produce wine but it is only in Australia that this particular style is made.

Notes sourced from Campbells of Rutherglen.

The Campbell’s are a fourth generation winemaking family dedicated to continuing a tradition begun in 1870, of producing premium quality wines that reflect the distinctive characteristics of the Rutherglen region. Drawing on their intimate knowledge of the region the Campbells can ensure that they grow grapes of the highest quality. The result is traditional styles of wines with finesse and a subtle use of oak complementing the full fruit flavours.

Each season grapes are picked after prolonged ripening to ensure maximum sugar levels and raisin character. The resultant wine is blended into soleras to maintain a consistent house style when combined with wines from previous vintages. Bright amber gold colour with copper tints. On the nose there are fresh raisin fruit aromas backed by a hint of fortifying spirit and aged oak characters. Luscious mouthfilling palate with raisin fruit followed by cleansing spirit on the back palate. Serve with strong cheeses, plum pudding or as an after dinner drink with coffee This wine should ideally be consumed within 2-3 weeks of opening. 17.5% alcohol volume.

The sensational non-vintage Muscat possesses 230 grams per liter of residual sugar, 17% alcohol (typical for this region’s fortified cuvees), a deep amber color, good unctuosity, and a sweet bouquet of brandy macerated raisins, molasses, caramels, and toffee. Rich, full-bodied, and extraordinarily intense, it is an amazing wine. This cuvee is based on 20-25-year old soleras.

Primitivo Quiles is the oldest bodega in the Alicante region, with the family producing wine since 1780. Alicante is the driest Spanish wine region, with 300mm or so rainfall per year. Despite the warm weather and low rainfall the wines retain good freshness and finesse due to the elevation and cool nights from the continental climate. Moscatel Romano (known elsewhere as Muscat of Alexandria, Lexia and Zibbibo) played an important part in the history of Alicante, as the coastline served as a prominent trade route where these durable (fortified) wines would more comfortably survive the journey.
This wine is produced in the "Mistella" method where pressed juice is fortified with neutral brandy spirit leaving 200g/l of residual sugar, making it ideal as an aperitif on ice, or served with cheese and fruit. The aroma is fragrant and floral with orange, straw, billy tea, and raisin, with a good balance of acidity and sweetness.

After 20 plus years in the making Warrabilla have finally been able produce a Grand Muscat, the fortified that Rutherglen is famous for. Together with his assistant winemaker, daughter Amy, Andrew Sutherland Smith has crafted an outstanding Grand Muscat that is a fitting tribute to his family heritage. With an average age of 18 years, the only bad news is that production is tiny with only 200 bottles scheduled to be released each year.

Heady aromatics of honeyed raisins, Christmas cake and rancio characters overlay hints of marmalade, toffee and marzipan with perfectly integrated spirit. Magnificently rich and concentrated with a viscous textural feel akin to motor oil the palate is layered with luscious Christmas cake, honey, dried raisins, marmalade infusions, rancio characters and marzipan. The wine is fortifed on skins which extracts a bit more tannin and tends to dry out the finish so it doesn’t end with a cloying sweetness. Several years ago, a voluntary classification of Rutherglen Muscats and Tokays was implemented. Each wine is classified in ascending order of quality with the average age stipulations for each descriptor graded as follows: for 'Rutherglen', two to five years old; for 'Classic', five to 12 years old; for 'Grand', 12 to 20 years old, and for 'Rare', 20 years or more. Naturally, there's an enormous difference in the concentration and complexity of wines distinguished by these grades - not to mention price. When compared with first growth Sauternes or a Pedro Ximenez Sherry of similar age, purchasing a bottle or two of these amazing fortifieds will seem less like blatant hedonism and more like carefully considered insurance against the chance of an extended winter.

The Rare cuvee is pure nectar. My favorite of this quartet is the virtually perfect non-vintage Rare Muscat Merchant Prince. Its dark amber color is accompanied by an extraordinary perfume of toffee, caramels, prunes, and raisins with hints of maple syrup and soy. Although its viscosity is reminiscent of motor oil, the wine is not cloyingly sweet because of good underlying acidity as well as surprising tannin that frames this enormously endowed, sweet elixir. This stunning offering is one of Australia’s treasures. Justifiably renowned for their tremendous dessert wines, Campbell’s four cuvees all performed impressively well, making one wonder if the price difference between the regular and rare offerings is really worth it. Certainly there is a bit more complexity and intensity to the Rare Tokay and Rare Muscat, which emerge from a solera system averaging 60 years of age. In any event, the tasting notes for all four wines are nearly identical to any of the great Australian fortifieds, such as Buller, Chambers Rosewood, etc

    Seppelt Fortified Wine price drop!

Consumption of fortified wines has been steadily falling for years, although according to industry statistics there was a small growth early in 2003 and in part this must be attributed to the re-release of the re-packaged Seppelt fortified range. The bean counters at Southcorp (Seppelt’s parent company) finally realized that the packaging costs of tall, trendy half bottles was more than that of full bottles. So now gone are the 375ml “Terrain series” bottles and in come the traditional 750ml Portugese Vintage Port bottles.
The quality has not diminished, but what’s more, the price still remains the same as for the 375ml. bottles! It’s no wonder that wine lovers are suddenly re-discovering these very classy wines.

Brilliant, sienna brown colour with olive green edges. Wonderful sniffing aroma of honeyed marmalade and crushed raisins fused together in fine old brandy spirit. Rich, luscious palate - a magnificent juxtaposition of rancio flavours over raisins and honey. Superb warm, fine clean spirit. Perfect balance with exceptionally long lingering honey raisin aftertaste.
