French Wine - Buy Online in Australia from Vintage Direct

Nicks Wine Merchants continue to ship wines across Australia from Europe and in particular France, as we have done for many decades. It’s always a pleasure to discover something new in the world of wine, as it is to renew many of our old acquaintances with Chateau owners and negociants. Our objective is to find value for money wines with flavour profiles that are not easily found in Australia. We endeavour to deal directly whenever possible, cutting out the wholesalers, meaning our direct imports frequently offer outrageous value for money.

This site can deliver such powerful, tannic wines that I was left especially impressed by the supple, harmonious style of the 2022 Pavie Macquin. Unwinding in the glass with notions of sweet wild berries, rose petals, spices, violets, bay leaf and new oak, it's full-bodied, deep and vibrant, with a layered core of fruit, bright acids and a long, penetrating finish, where powdery structuring tannins make themselves felt but without any asperity. Of course, this remains a deep and powerful wine, but Nicolas Thienpont and his team continue their shift toward more judicious extraction, with excellent results.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Apr 2023)

The 2022 Pavie Macquin is a gorgeous wine, not quite as exotic as it can be, which will no doubt please those who find this wine on the richer side within the context of Saint-Émilion. Dark red fruit, chalk, mint, white pepper and spice all race across the palate. Given the small size of the berries and the heat, the winemaking team led by Nicolas Thienpont opted for gentler vinification with fewer punchdowns than the past. The result is a decidedly linear, vibrant Pavie Macquin that bristles with the chalky, saline energy that is a signature of this part of Saint-Émilion, but that has not always been present in a wine that in the past has been more about textural opulence. The blend is 80% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Franc and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon. Tasted four times. Drink 2030-2052.

Another wine that's going to flirt with perfection is the 2022 Château Pavie Macquin, and this might be the finest vintage I've ever tasted from this address. A blend of 80% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Franc, and a splash of Cabernet Sauvignon, it reveals an inky purple hue as well as a stunning bouquet of pure cassis, liquid black raspberries, truffle, scorched earth, and graphite. Full-bodied, concentrated, and massive on the palate, it may be the largest-scaled Pavie Macquin ever produced. But don't let that scare you off – it stays flawlessly balanced, has pure, fine-grained tannins, and a great finish. I'll be a buyer.

Perfumed and aromatic, smells rich but not too intensely with roses and soft purple flowers. Succulent and really quite crisp and clear, such clarity to the fruit, with both a sharpness of acidity and mineral bite to the tannins. Liquorice, blue fruits, cool chalky tones. You get a sense of the power and structure, it’s wide and full, thick but keeping the freshness and tension with super high acidity giving the mouthwatering nature and a touch of austerity. Precise and detailed with energy and tension as well as depth and clarity. Great potential. A yield of 31hl/ha. Harvest 23 September - 11 October. Ageing 16 months; 70% new barrels, 30% one wine. Derenoncourt consultants. Drink 2025 - 2045.

    Georgina Hindle - Decanter

Dark garnet in color, the wine offers its nose of cherry blossoms, licorice, black fruits, orange rind, olives, and tobacco leaf profile with ease. The perfect blend of power, elegance, and oceans of fruit, there is a beautiful balance, and harmony here. The opulent, silky fruits deliver purity, length, and freshness that is close to seamless. The sensations linger on the backend long after the wine has left the glass. The wine blends 80% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon. 14.7% ABV, 3.4 pH. The harvest took place September 14-September 20. Drink from 2027-2055.

Classic ruby color. Bright and fresh aromas of red pinot fruit are liberally laced with plenty of floral and spice wisps. The delicious, rich and seductively textured medium-bodied flavors possess an opulent mid-palate that contrasts somewhat with the firm, clean, dry, youthfully austere and mildly warm finale. Drink: 2030+.

The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes is perfumed and elegant, soaring from the glass with scents of roses, peonies, orange rind and sweet red berries. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and sensual, with melting tannins, succulent acids and a saline finish, it's one of the most ethereal wines in the range.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2022)

The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Charmes 1er Cru has a ripe nose with raspberry, cranberry and quite conspicuous rose petal scents. The palate is medium-bodied with sweet, ripe tannins, the new oak a little more present here, smooth towards the finish that just needs a little more Chambolle DNA. Drink: 2024-2038.

    Neal Martin - Vinous

A slightly less intense but pretty purple, some whole bunches here. They also stretch out the fruit across the palate beautifully. This is a very deft Chambolle with plenty of nuance, extremely floral, and with a graceful structure.

Adrien Renoir Le Terroir Extra Brut Champagne
    Champagne, FRANCE
    $195. 00
    Bottle
    $2340.00 Dozen
    ABV: 12%
    Closure: Cork

Adrien Renoir is one the brightest new talents to emerge from Champagne in recent years. Working with his father Vincent for several years at their 7 hectare domaine in Verzy, in 2019 the wines were re-launched under his name, and in quick time has caught the attention of educated Champagne drinkers the world over. One of the first changes he insisted on was abandoning herbicides completely, and the estate vineyards are certified organic as of 2020. Oak use too has increased, along with more focus on specific parcels for his lieu-dits bottlings. In the cellar fermentations occur with native yeasts, lees stirring is practiced, and there is no sulphur used at bottling.

Le Terroir is a blend of 50% Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from his village in Verzy, and the soil here is chalk with clay topsoil. Starting with a base vintage, this is supplemented with 20% reserve from the previous year. The wine is fermented in neutral oak with native yeasts, undergoes full malolactic, before spending around 11 months in barrel and 24 months on lees in bottle. Dosage is very low, under 2g/L.

    Other Reviews....
Disgorged in April 2021 with 1.6 grams per liter dosage, Renoir's NV Extra-Brut Grand Cru Le Terroir (2018 base) is showing very well, unfurling in the glass with aromas of nashi pear, crisp yellow orchard fruit, clear honey and freshly baked bread. Medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with a layered but tightly wound core of fruit that's girdled by bright acids and animated by a pinpoint mousse, it will reward at least a year or two on cork with greater range and plenitude, and it will live for a lot longer. Drink 2021 - 2038.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Feb 2022)

Composed of equal parts Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, with the base wine from 2020, the NV Champagne Assemblage Terroir Extra Brut pours a copper straw hue and comes entirely from the village of Verzy. Lush with ripe fruit, the NV Champagne Assemblage Terroir Extra Brut is all about its pure and rich liqueur, which is hard to resist, offering aromas of Bing cherry, fresh peach, and dewy fresh flowers. Inviting on the palate, it is clean and lifted, with nothing heavy or imposing about it, and is balanced with a pillowy mousse. Drink 2024-2034.

Adrien started this solera in 2013, and is 100% Verzy Pinot Noir. First released in 2021, the wine spends 24 months on lees in bottle prior to disgorgement.

    Other Reviews....
Disgorged in March 2021 with one gram per liter dosage, Renoir's new NV Solera Les Années derives from a solera established in 2013. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of pear, dried white flowers, mandarin orange, white cherries and freshly baked bread, it's medium to full-bodied, seamless and vinous, with a bright spine of acidity, a pretty pinpoint mousse and a long, saline finish. Youthfully tightly wound, I can't wait to see how it performs with a few years on cork. Drink 2021 - 2035.

Oak use too has increased, along with more focus on specific parcels for his lieu-dits bottlings. In the cellar fermentations occur with native yeasts, lees stirring is practiced, and there is no sulphur used at bottling.

While Les Montants is planted to both Pinot Noir (70%) & Chardonnay (30%), the extremely chalky site with shallow soil is best suited to Chardonnay, which is separated out for this bottling. The old selection massale vineyard was planted in 1961. The wine spends 36 months on lees before disgorgement at very low Extra Brut levels around 1g/L.

    Other Reviews....
A powerful wine from Adrien Renoir, entirely produced from Chardonnay vines planted in 1962, the 2018 Champagne Les Montants pours a straw hue and delivers lightly wild aromas of tangy lemon candies, fresh yellow apple, and hay. Inviting and rounded on the palate, it takes on more focus and crystalline energy than the nose would suggest, with a pillowy mouse, an elegant mouthfeel, a silky texture, and a ripe feel through the finish. This very distinctive and powerful wine from Adrien Renoir is drinking well now and will continue to drink well over the next 10-15 years.

Les Epinettes is 100% Pinot Noir from a vineyard planted selection massale in 1971 where the soils are primarily clay-limestone with some chalk. Raised 100% in older barrels, the wine spends 36 months on lees before disgorged at very low Extra Brut levels around 1g/L.

    Other Reviews....
Entirely Pinot Noir, the 2018 Champagne Les Epinettes has a rich straw hue and a seductive cologne of bergamot, clove, currants, and kirsch. Continuing to the palate, it is saturated and full-bodied, with its pillowing mousse creating a weightless feel before it becomes more savory, with notable salinity, a glycerol-rich texture, and notes of citrus oils. A serious wine, it will hold up over the coming 10-15 years. Drink 2024-2040.

A blend of 70% Syrah and 30% Grenache matured in French oak barriques for 18 months. Midnight black in colour with a vibrant dark red hue. Aromas of black cherry and liquorice have a leathery overlay with notions of graphite, scorched earth and pepper following on. Medium to full bodied, rich black raspberry, black cherry, liquorice and leather flavours are wrapped up in a tense chewy mouthfeel. Scorched earth, provincial herbs and peppered dried meat elements are also evident. Muscular tannin structure finishing dry and slightly grippy with a long peppery aftertaste.

The 2014 Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Minéral is a powerful, intense Champagne that captures all of the natural power of these old vines in Avize and Cramant. Aptly named, the Minéral is infused with tremendous mineral and soil inflections that give a real feeling of gravitas. Crushed rocks, slate, chalk and citrus accents are some of the many nuances that emerge with a bit of time in the glass. This release is fabulous. It is also a reticent wine, though, so at least a year or two in bottle will help soften. Dosage is 3 grams per liter. Disgorged: April, 2020.

Unlike most so-called prestige cuvées, Terroirs is produced from only great sites and is 100% Grand Cru. The fruit comes from four villages in the Côte des Blancs: Avize, Cramant, Oger, and Oiry. The vines average 40 years of age, and Agrapart uses between 50-60% reserve wine. After a natural fermentation, half of the wine is matured in large format, neutral oak and then spends up to 48 months on lees. Dosage is limited to 5g/l and disgorgement is carried out by hand.

A plentiful mousse sits comfortably over a pale straw coloured base that has pale gold edges and is finely threaded by a delicate bead that shows great persistence as it rises to the surface. The nose exemplifies a classic Champagne sniff featuring rich, toasty notes of oily baked bread, yeast lees, honeyed cashew, roast almonds and hints of citrus. Remarkably fresh and possessing an elegant creaminess, mouthfilling toasty baked bread, yeast lees and citrus flavours show great richness over a back drop of light oily characters, traces of honeyed cashew and roasted almonds. Dry crisp finish with a long oily toast, baked bread, yeast lees, citrus and roasted almond aftertaste.

When it comes to Pinot Noir in Champagne, the grand cru villages of Bouzy and Ambonnay rank amongst the greatest in the region. And one of the most talented exponents from here is the Clouet family based in Bouzy. Champagne Andre Clouet have been producing Champagne for over two centuries, and under the guidance of Jean Francois Clouet the wines have never looked better. While his wines are exuberant and concentrated, Jean Francois manages to counter this with immaculate finesse and detail on the palate.

The V6 Experience combines recent robust vintages with a significant proportion of reserve wines. The blend undergoes maturation on lees in the bottle for 6 years, utilizing a permeable seal that introduces a small amount of oxygen annually. This method results in the wine being released with delightful development and maturity, enhancing the overall intensity of its expression.

    Other Reviews....
Aged for six years on the second lees, the yellow-golden NV Brut The V6 Experience is a Bouzy Pinot Noir that displays great purity and intensity but also reduction on the mineral-scented nose. This is deep and complex, but it needs all our patience and perhaps even a decanter or at least a big glass and lots of aeration. The palate is rich and powerful, firmly structured, very tight and still astringent on the finish, but there is so much finesse paired with power, concentration and fruit, which give the V6 a promising future. The wine just starts a bit slowly (like a rocket, which is pictured on the label), but it will most probably go very steep in a couple of years. I have ever had this cuvée before, so I can only guess, though. Drink 2021 - 2027.

Un Jour de 1911... is a call back to the golden age of France in the early 20th century. Inspiration comes from a precious few bottles of Clouet Champagne that were uncovered after spending 80 years hidden in a small cellar.

The NV Un jour de 1911... is another 100% Bouzy Pinot Noir with an ancient label design. The shining golden-colored cuvée combines ripeness, complexity and finesse with intensity and elegance on both the nose and palate. It's a powerful and rich yet very fine and balanced Champagne with great freshness and complex length. It is juicy and intense but also highly delicate, and its mineral tension and persistent finish make it a first-class wine for elaborate dishes. A great Champagne, with a label that doesn't give any more detailed information regarding vintages or disgorgement date, but we know it's always a 50/50 blend of three vintages (including one great millésime at least 10 years old) and reserve wines from a solera system. I tasted the wine as a Brut with Clouet's German importer in Bremen. You shouldn't drink it too early, as it would be a waste of its talents. Drink 2021 - 2033.

A rich and expansive champagne with tons of mature aromas of dried fruit (apricots!) and candied orange. Teeters on the edge of decadence, but has enough vitality to stay on the right side of that line. Plenty of textural complexity on the palate and a long, chalky finish that keeps giving and giving. Spot-on balance. Drink or hold.

Chalk soils have long been considered one of the key resources enabling the Champagne region to produce such intense and refined wines. Aiming to highlight this relationship, Andre Clouet have released a new wine in their range further dialling up the crisp and salty flavours so prevalent in wines from these chalk rich soils. As a 100% Chardonnay cuvee, this initial release of "Chalky" is entirely from the outstanding 2013 vintage, with vineyard sources one third from the southern slopes of the Montagne de Reims, and two thirds on the Cote de Blancs. After pressing, fermentation takes place in small stainless steel tanks before being aged for seven years in the bottle, disgorged early in 2021 with 6g/L dosage. Expect a lively, salty, mineral inflected wine that is a perfect aperitif or wine to drink alongside fresh oysters.

Brimming with fresh apple, lemon and wild-berry aromas underlined by a note of freshly baked baguette, this begins so charming, then it turns in a fascinating mineral direction with a pronounced saline quality. The excitement comes from the tension between these two sides of this very distinctive champagne. Very long, chalky finish. 100% chardonnay from the 2013 vintage. Drink now.

Produced from 100% Pinot Noir grapes. A frothy white mousse slowly disperses to reveal a pale straw to pale gold coloured base that has a very fine and persistent bead. Ripe pear and subtle dried honey aromas are followed by some toasty lees characters with hints of strawberry and brioche as end notes. Racy and tense the palate has pear, yeast lees and citrus flavours supported by stimulating acidity with elements of delicate almond and oily baked bread on the crisp very dry finish. Aftertaste of pear, yeast lees, lightly roasted almond, citrus and baked bread.

Incredible value for a blanc de noirs (100% Pinot Noir) grower Champagne from the grand cru vineyards of Bouzy. It shows gorgeous aromas of stone fruit, citrus and strawberry, with complex brioche nuances, remarkable balance, ongoing elegance and a rich, refined, persistent finish.

The NV Brut Grand Réserve Grand Cru is a pure Pinot Noir from Bouzy. It's pure, fresh, fine and aromatic on the nose and round and delicate on the palate. The fruit-intense finish is chalky-mineral and stimulatingly fresh in its salty finesse and elegant yeastiness. Nice lemon juice flavors give an extra kick of refreshment. This is a picture-book NV Brut. No indication of disgorgement given. Tasted with Jean-François Clouet's German importer in Bremen.

New technology, changing consumer values and a willingness to abandon tradition has not only multiplied the creative options available to wine label designers, but has frequently led to 'over-packaging'.

The extravagant presentation of Armand de Brignac has given some critics pause for reflection, one commenting “...the luxuriousness of the package made me afraid I’d subconsciously find the Champagne amazing simply because of its bottle.”

Produced by Champagne Cattier, the brand's first bottling was introduced in 2006 and is identifiable by its distinctive gold bottle with pewter Ace of Spades labels. Like Krug, the Brignac's Brut Gold is a multi-vintage style sourcing fruit from both Premier and Grand Cru vineyards. Two other cuvées, a Rosé and a Blanc de Blancs were released in 2008. An appearance in the Jay-Z music video of "Show Me What You Got" prior to the launch of the Armand de Brignac brand sparked wide discussion on sites covering hip-hop and popular culture, following Jay-Z's public fallout with the makers of Cristal Champagne. As a result, Mr. Cattier's brand received more publicity in two weeks than it had in two decades. "I would have never imagined a few months ago that we'd become part of this mysterious and exclusive rap world," he said. "Jay-Z is a remarkable man. I'd like to invite him here to visit the winery."

Subsequent tastings by international wine critics have acknowledged Armand de Brignac as one of the world’s top Champagnes, though it comes with a price to match.

Composed of 50% Merlot and 50% Cabernet Franc, the 2020 Arômes de Pavie has an alcohol of 14.78% and a pH of 3.57. It is aging in French oak barriques, 70% new. Deep purple-black in color, it needs a little swirling to unleash its exuberant scents of stewed black plums, black cherry compote and boysenberries, plus hints of tar, sautéed herbs and chargrill. The full-bodied palate packs in the black fruit layers, framed by soft tannins and tons of freshness, finishing long and earthy.

The 2020 Arômes de Pavie represents a major step up in quality vis-à-vis previous vintages. It is a deep, statuesque wine endowed with tremendous power, richness and resonance. Plum, mocha, licorice, espresso and spice all flesh out in the glass. I can't wait to taste this in bottle. This is the first year in which the blend is equal parts Merlot and Cabernet Franc, both increasingly from plots dedicated to the Arômes, a departure from the past, when this wine was a selection of younger-vine fruit and lots that did not make it into the Grand Vin.

    James Suckling

Deeply colored, the wine offers red and black plums, flowers, boysenberry, espresso and dark chocolate on the nose. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, lush and concentrated, velvet textures and loads of sweet, fleshy, flashy, dark red fruits, spice, espresso and cocoa in the finish. Aromes de Pavie is no longer the second wine of Pavie. Because all its fruit comes from a specific 11 hectare parcel, it should be looked at as its own brand. The wine blends 50% Merlot and 50% Cabernet Franc.

Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar Insider

Powerful and upfront, with a thick layer of liquorice and clove, blueberry and blackberry fruit. A little more of a monolith than the main estate wine of Pavie - something that you find often this year, where the tannins seem to go to the second wines. 70% new oak, 3.57pH. A yield of 35hl/ha.

Ripe and pure-fruited but the freshness really comes through with this (first time) 50/50 blend. Chalky, mineral note behind. Fine-grained tannins. Drives on the finish with the fruit and freshness. More than adequate understudy while awaiting the grand vin.

Offering up aromas of lemon oil, dried white flowers, walnuts and fresh bread, it's full-bodied, vinous and incisive, with a pillowy mousse, racy acids and a long, mineral finish. Drink 2020 - 2037.

A blend from seven grand crus across the Montagne de Reims and Côte des Blancs, this is dry in the classic Ayala style. Its freshness has been tempered by bottle aging although it is by no means mature and still has taught acidity. The mineral texture of the Chardonnay is balanced by the riper structure of the Pinot Noir in an impressive wine. Drink from 2021.

Named after the 11th Bishop of Reims, Saint-Nicaise is Bauchet’s flagship Champagne. A 100% Chardonnay blend sourced from Premier Cru vineyards in the Cote des Blancs (Grauves) and the Montagne de Reims (Bisseuil), it’s aged for a minimum of 5 years before disgorgement.

The nose presents a classic Champagne sniff with alluring scents of baked bread, yeast lees and toasty citrus like notes engulfing the senses. Brioche and subtle dried honey aromas ensue. Sculptured yet rich, citrus, yeast lees and baked bread characters form the core of the flavour profile which is underpinned by a spine of vivid acidity that lends tension to the long brisk finish. Stéphane Tissot is a tireless and vigorous promoter of individual sites and natural wines. He brings technological experience from his work in Australia and South Africa, and combines this with his ruthless yield reduction philosophy and very serious 'small batch' winemaking which is carried out as naturally as possible. Tissot plants mostly on clay and limestone, all sites are farmed biodynamically and yields are kept low, averaging only 30 h/l per hectare. Ferments are allowed to commence naturally and the still wines are bottled without filtration and little or no SO2 is added across the board. Vibrancy and fruit presence is a signature across all his wines. Given Stéphane is constantly experimenting and obsessively seeking improvements; he is at the forefront of the Jura revolution and produces terroir-driven wines of depth, intensity, interest and undeniable quality.

While Stéphane Tissot is widely praised for his terroir driven expressions of Vin Jaune among the other wines from his home in the Jura, this sparking is no afterthought on his part. Indigène Cremant du Jura is a serious effort deserving to be mentioned alongside the finest grower Champagnes of France. Based on the 2018 vintage, the blend is 50% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Noir, 5% Poulsard, and 5% Trousseau, and was bottled with no dosage in June 2021.

    Other Reviews....
The sparkling 2018 Crémant du Jura Indigène is a blend of 50% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Noir and 5% each Poulsard and Trousseau fermented in equal parts in tank and wood. The second fermentation in bottle was produced adding unfermented vin de paille (sweet) and vin de paille in fermentation (yeasts). This wine is sold without any added dosage and very low sulfur. It has a copper-like color, like a blanc de noirs, and a very expressive nose, very floral (orange blossom), with some vin de paille echoes. It's a serious sparkling wine, elegant with finesse and nuance, nicely balanced and with very small bubbles. This is simply fantastic. Drink 2021 - 2026.

The low-yielding biodynamic Savagnin grapes for these Vin Jaunes are hand-picked and the juice fermented in steel tanks. The mostly clay soils give wines of higher acidity (whereas limestone gives less acidity and more minerality), and strong backbone. After the primary fermentation the wine is part-filled (around 85%) into old barrels (228 lt. usually) and a 'flor' yeast veil or 'voile' develops on the surface of the wine, protecting it from oxidation and adding complex aromas and flavours to the wine. The barrels are stored in a cool but 'airy' cellar (not underground) for around 6-7 years so the dryer atmosphere causes the evaporation of water and therefore concentration of flavours and reduction of the wine volume. In fact, usually only 620ml. (the size of a Vin Jaune bottle) remains from a litre. This is very expensive wine to make, as not only is there a huge volume loss, but often some barrels need to be culled.

This is the latest edition of Vin Jaune W that was a massive success with the first release over a decade ago. The late great whisky producer in Burgundy, Michel Couvreur, has made some fine whiskies aged in Tissot’s Vin Jaune barrels and this wine reverses the concept. Fine Vin Jaune aged in whiskey barrels for almost 7 years. The Vin Jaune is so powerful that the nuances of whisky only adds a gentle facet.

La Mailloche has a gentle east aspect and very degraded soils of Liassic clay. Another wine with good firmness and seductive weight with some nice bitterness.

The 2020 Volnay Les Mitans 1er Cru has a generous bouquet with red cherries, blackcurrant and violet aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, quite spicy with white pepper and clove notes towards the finish. Very fine, but it needs time. Drink 2026-2042.

From the Ormeau part of Mitans. Very dark colour. Ripe fruit with a sundried element, quite dark fruit for Volnay, but the tannins are ripe and the acidity is lower. Medium density and persistence.

Vincent and Raphaël work with a range of Champagne terroirs, mostly in the north of the region near Reims. The quality starts with thoughtful viticulture and low yields from a high percentage of old vines many planted in the 1960s and 1970s. Since the brothers took over the operation from their father in 2004, all chemical herbicide use was stopped and returned to labour intensive manual cultivation of their vines. In the cellar they employ long, natural fermentations and extended aging on lees. Parcels are vinified separately, and three-quarters of the production spends time in 350-litre barrels, while the reserve wines are held in demi-muids of 600 litres. Unusually, bottle aging is mostly under cork for the second fermentation (tirer à liege). The brothers believe this allows slightly more oxygen to get to the wine, resulting in Champagnes with finer bubbles and seamless texture. None of the wines go through malolactic fermentation. Bottling occurs without filtration and disgorgement is still done entirely by hand.

Please note: Disgorgement dates can vary. Please contact the store if you would like to check which disgorgement is currently available.

Disgorged in July 2020 with seven grams per liter dosage, the NV Brut Réserve (2018 base) is the latest rendition of this wine. Bursting with aromas of orange oil, crisp orchard fruit and fresh bread, it's medium to full-bodied, fleshy and gourmand, with tangy acids and an enveloping, pillowy profile. Drink 2020 - 2030.

Baudry’s rosé is drawn from vines rooted in the gravel terroir of Grézeaux and a parcel called Les Balais, which was originally planted by Matthieu’s father some 30 years ago. In contrast to Grézeaux, Les Balais is on clay and flint (silex) soils. Picked by hand, there was brief skin contact and then the wine fermented via indigenous yeasts—two-thirds in Italian-made concrete tanks and the remainder in stainless steel. The result is a layered, fleshy and complex rosé with lots of earthy, saline minerality to complex the red fruit characters. Unique and delicious.

    Other Reviews....
Brilliant onion skin color. Suave, mineral-accented aromas of fresh red berries and tangerine on the sharply focused nose. Dry and energetic on the palate, offering sappy strawberry, bitter cherry and orange zest flavors that show excellent clarity and mineral lift. Closes extremely long and silky, displaying resonating floral and red fruit notes and a faint touch of anise.

    Other Reviews....
Billecart-Salmon's 2016 vintage continues the house's drive to creatively lower dosage levels, coming in with just 1.9g/L in this year of extreme weather. The 2016 will be at its best from mid-2024 but is already showing a mature clementine and juicy apricot fruitiness, warmed up with ground nuts and fragrant raspberry. Neat and slightly reticent on release, there is a subtle insistency here, and it will lengthen and unfurl with more time on cork. The most impressive of Billecart's recent vintage releases. Made with 100% grand cru fruit, 25% of which was vinified in small and large oak. Drink 2024 – 2030.

Disgorged during the second quarter of 2022 with a dosage of 3.75 grams per liter, the 2009 Brut Blanc de Blancs Cuvée Louis Salmon reveals aromas of pear, lemon oil, mandarin oil, white pepper, pastry and almonds. Medium to full-bodied, chiseled and long, it has a crystalline yet vinous texture with a fresh, salty finish. It is a quintessential representation of Billecart's style, characterized by racy acids and a lively palate. It derives from Chardonnay grapes sourced from the villages of Mesnil-sur-Oger, Chouilly and Cramant and was aged exclusively in steel tanks. Drink 2023 - 2040.

The 2009 Champagne Blanc De Blancs Louis Salmon Brut comes from Mesnil, Cramant and Chouilly and was all fermented in stainless steel tank. Since 2009 was a warmer vintage, they did not use wood, as they were looking to preserve the freshness of the wine. A seductive wine that’s almost identical in appearance to the 2017 Blanc de Blancs, this 2009 jumps from the glass with a buoyant personality in its perfume of lemon custard, honeysuckle, fresh brioche, a hint of almond, and juicy pear. Full-bodied, its wonderfully rich texture coats the palate with citrus oils, and it has a finish that won’t quit. It balances its warmth and solar feel with a lovely embrace and retains a powerful yet balanced finish. Drink 2024-2040. 3.8 grams per liter dosage.

The 2008 Brut Cuvée Nicolas François was disgorged during the third quarter of 2022 with less than three grams per liter. It has a delicate, pure, clean bouquet with aromas of orchard fruits, spring flowers, honey and licorice, with hints of brioche and pastry with aeration. Medium to full-bodied, chiseled and crystalline, with racy acids and a chalky texture, the palate is tense and the finish is long, penetrating and salty. It exhibits perfect Billecart style, yet tension is present, a sign of the vintage. It is a blend of 60% Pinot Noir (sourced from Aÿ, Mareuil and Verzenay) and 40% Chardonnay from Mesnil, Chouilly and Cramant, and it matured 83% in tanks and 17% in old oak barrels. The 2008 Brut Cuvée Nicolas François Billecart is an electric, nervy Champagne that very much reflects the style of the year. Crushed rocks, mint, spice, dried herbs, hazelnut, lemon peel and marzipan are all beautifully laced together. The 2008 is just entering its first plateau of maturity, making it a fine choice for drinking now and over the next two decades, possibly more. The blend id 60% Pinot Noir (from Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, Ambonnay, Bouzy, Verzy and Verzenay) and 40% Chardonnay (from Mesnil, Chouilly and Cramant). It's a terrific effort, although I must add that a recent visit made it pretty clear that even better things lie ahead. Dosage is 4 grams per liter. Drink 2023-2038.

Based on 60% Pinot Noir and the rest Chardonnay, with 17% raised in barrels, the 2008 Champagne Nicolas François spent more than 150 months on its lees, with 2.9 grams per liter dosage. It pours a rich straw hue and is layered and long with aromas of truffle, apricot, croissant, floral orange blossoms, and marmalade. Full-bodied, it’s supple in texture, with a rounded mousse, and has a long-lasting, mouthwatering finish. Exceptionally well-balanced, it comes together seamlessly on the finish. This will be a wine to enjoy over the next three decades. Disgorged in January of 2022.

From the walled vineyard behind Billecart's HQ in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ planted exclusively with Pinot Noir. It was all vinified in oak. Apparently 'this micro cuvée will pair wonderfully with a wild turbot and Burmese coffee'. The label is made of cherry wood sourced from sustainable forests. Each individual wooden label is distinguished by differences in grain and colour, making each bottle unique.
Full of life on the nose and richly textured on the palate. Thoroughly satisfying wine with quite a bit of body that reaches every crevice of the palate. Firm, savoury finish. A serious, dense champagne for the table. Drink 2023-2032.

Disgorged with seven grams per liter dosage, the 2008 Brut Rosé Cuvée Elisabeth Salmon is one of the finest wines I've tasted from Billecart in recent years. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of peach, mandarin oil, warm bread, red berries and petals, it's full-bodied, deep and vinous, with lovely mid-palate amplitude, terrific concentration and bright girdling acids. In what is quite a tightly wound vintage and from a house whose style is rather understated, this is a dramatic, fleshy wine that concludes with a long, flavorful finish. Drink 2022 - 2048.

You can purchase French wine online through our comprehensive online store. We offer entry level  French wines all the way up to the Premier Crus. We ship French wine Australia wide and can offer free delivery on orders over $200.  We believe understanding your wine and its history adds to the enjoyment of the varying flavours so we also introduce the various estates we source from.

There are five main regions we concentrate on:

Bordeaux

Home to many of the greatest Cabernet and Merlot based French wine in the world, as well as the finest sweet whites in the form of Sauternes.  The Bordeaux French wine trade today involves many groups, and within each there are also vast differences of scale and quality. We aim primarily to seek out the “little big ones”, those producers who are over delivering and offering wines of great typicity and value.

Rhone Valley

The Rhone Valley vineyards run in and out between hills, perching on terraces and precipitous hillsides. This region is a world in itself; but is not really a single region rather a duality. The south is considered the bargain basement for richer styled Grenache based French wines, while the north features highly refined Syrah’s. Both offer a foretaste of the vast vineyards of Provence and Languedoc, regions from which we also source from.

Loire Valley

Loire French wines imported are principally whites, primarily from a variety known as Pineau de Ia Loire or Chenin Blanc, the principal grape of Anjou and Touraine. This is a grape that develops an inimitable flavour when grown on the exceptional sites of Coteaux du Layon, and at Savennieres, Vouvray and around Saumur. Wines from Bouvet Ladubay and Moulin Touchais are stand outs. Sancerre is also sought after, as these Sauvignon Blancs offer welcome alternatives to their pungent New Zealand counterparts.

Champagne

Dealing directly with Champagne houses has allowed us to take advantage of some of the finest wines in the district, less the luxury price tags. Most notable are the 100% Grand Cru offerings from Marguet which we consider amongst the very best values in Champagne available in Australia today.

Burgundy

With over 10,000 wine-producing enterprises in Burgundy with an average vineyard area of around 4 hectares, the image of a finely stitched tapestry applies to this dizzyingly complex region. Home to superb Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays, we also deal with suppliers further north in Chablis.

As well as French wine online, we also offer a large range of Australian Shiraz and Italian wines. Complement your wine collection with a fine range of Scotch whisky. We offer single malt rare Scotch whisky, Tasmanian whisky and more. Enjoy the flavours of international wines and liquors through Nick’s Wine Merchants.
