The 2014 Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Minéral is a powerful, intense Champagne that captures all of the natural power of these old vines in Avize and Cramant. Aptly named, the Minéral is infused with tremendous mineral and soil inflections that give a real feeling of gravitas. Crushed rocks, slate, chalk and citrus accents are some of the many nuances that emerge with a bit of time in the glass. This release is fabulous. It is also a reticent wine, though, so at least a year or two in bottle will help soften. Dosage is 3 grams per liter. Disgorged: April, 2020.

The NV Extra Brut Grand Cru Complantée emerges from a parcel in Avize interplanted with Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Pinot Blanc, Arbane, Petit Meslier and Chardonnay. Exotic and beguiling in the glass, the Complantée is absolutely gorgeous. Kirsch, red plum, rose petal and spice give the wine striking aromatic intensity and lovely inner perfume. The red grapes seem especially expressive in this release. The Complantée is not an obvious wine, rather it is a Champagne of translucent finesse. This release is a blend of equal parts 2017 and 2016, vinified in neutral oak. Dosage is 5 grams per liter. Disgorged: April, 2020. Drink 2020-2028.

This has a pretty nose of white flowers, daffodils, blanched almonds, lemons, white grapefruit and salted peanuts. Bright and full of personality with very fine bubbles. Open and vibrant. Made from a field blend of 6 varieties, co-fermented in barriques. Chardonnay, pinot noir, pinot meunier, arbanne, petit meslier and pinot blanc. 80% 2019 and 20% 2018. 5g/L dosage. 26 months on the lees. Disgorged May 2022. 4,000 bottles made. Drink now.

Agrapart's 7 Crus is a blend of seven Cote des Blancs villages; Avize, Cramant, Oger, Oiry, Avenay Val d’Or, Bergeres-les-Vertus, and Mardeuil. This cuvee is the only wine in the range to not be 100% Chardonnay, coming in at 90% Chardonnay and 10% Pinot Noir, all from their estate owned vineyards.

    Other Reviews....
Agrapart’s NV Brut 7 Crus is simply gorgeous. Rich, creamy and inviting, the 7 Crus hits all the right notes. The 7 Crus doesn’t quite have the focus or energy of the top wines here, but it is incredibly delicious, approachable and relatively easy to find. This may very well be the finest release of the 7 Crus I have ever tasted since this cuvée debuted a few years ago. The 7 Crus is 90% Chardonnay and 10% Pinot Noir. This release is equal parts 2015 and 2014. Don’t miss it! Dosage is 7 grams per liter.

    Cellar: Drink now - 6 Years (2019-2025)

Unlike most so-called prestige cuvées, Terroirs is produced from only great sites and is 100% Grand Cru. The fruit comes from four villages in the Côte des Blancs: Avize, Cramant, Oger, and Oiry. The vines average 40 years of age, and Agrapart uses between 50-60% reserve wine. After a natural fermentation, half of the wine is matured in large format, neutral oak and then spends up to 48 months on lees. Dosage is limited to 5g/l and disgorgement is carried out by hand.

A plentiful mousse sits comfortably over a pale straw coloured base that has pale gold edges and is finely threaded by a delicate bead that shows great persistence as it rises to the surface. The nose exemplifies a classic Champagne sniff featuring rich, toasty notes of oily baked bread, yeast lees, honeyed cashew, roast almonds and hints of citrus. Remarkably fresh and possessing an elegant creaminess, mouthfilling toasty baked bread, yeast lees and citrus flavours show great richness over a back drop of light oily characters, traces of honeyed cashew and roasted almonds. Dry crisp finish with a long oily toast, baked bread, yeast lees, citrus and roasted almond aftertaste.
Drink over the next 5-6 years.

Disgorged March 2019. Pours with a frothy white mousse that shows good buoyancy. Pale straw with tinges of pale gold to the base wine colour. Very fine bead showing excellent persistence. Lifted aromatics with pear well meshed to yeast lees and toast followed by refined cashew and citrus scents. The palate combines fresh citrus flavours with well integrated yeast lees and toasted brioche characters over light cashew and mineral. Dry crisp finish with a sense of creaminess to the mid palate. Full yet with good tension and length concluding with a long citrusy baked bread, yeast lees, light toast and cashew aftertaste.

Chalk soils have long been considered one of the key resources enabling the Champagne region to produce such intense and refined wines. Aiming to highlight this relationship, Andre Clouet have released a new wine in their range further dialling up the crisp and salty flavours so prevalent in wines from these chalk rich soils. As a 100% Chardonnay cuvee, this initial release of "Chalky" is entirely from the outstanding 2013 vintage, with vineyard sources one third from the southern slopes of the Montagne de Reims, and two thirds on the Cote de Blancs. After pressing, fermentation takes place in small stainless steel tanks before being aged for seven years in the bottle, disgorged early in 2021 with 6g/L dosage. Expect a lively, salty, mineral inflected wine that is a perfect aperitif or wine to drink alongside fresh oysters.

Brimming with fresh apple, lemon and wild-berry aromas underlined by a note of freshly baked baguette, this begins so charming, then it turns in a fascinating mineral direction with a pronounced saline quality. The excitement comes from the tension between these two sides of this very distinctive champagne. Very long, chalky finish. 100% chardonnay from the 2013 vintage. Drink now.

Produced from 100% Pinot Noir grapes. A frothy white mousse slowly disperses to reveal a pale straw to pale gold coloured base that has a very fine and persistent bead. Ripe pear and subtle dried honey aromas are followed by some toasty lees characters with hints of strawberry and brioche as end notes. Racy and tense the palate has pear, yeast lees and citrus flavours supported by stimulating acidity with elements of delicate almond and oily baked bread on the crisp very dry finish. Incredible value for a blanc de noirs (100% Pinot Noir) grower Champagne from the grand cru vineyards of Bouzy. It shows gorgeous aromas of stone fruit, citrus and strawberry, with complex brioche nuances, remarkable balance, ongoing elegance and a rich, refined, persistent finish.

The NV Brut Grand Réserve Grand Cru is a pure Pinot Noir from Bouzy. It's pure, fresh, fine and aromatic on the nose and round and delicate on the palate. The fruit-intense finish is chalky-mineral and stimulatingly fresh in its salty finesse and elegant yeastiness. Nice lemon juice flavors give an extra kick of refreshment. This is a picture-book NV Brut. No indication of disgorgement given. Tasted with Jean-François Clouet's German importer in Bremen.

New technology, changing consumer values and a willingness to abandon tradition has not only multiplied the creative options available to wine label designers, but has frequently led to 'over-packaging'.

The extravagant presentation of Armand de Brignac has given some critics pause for reflection, one commenting “...the luxuriousness of the package made me afraid I’d subconsciously find the Champagne amazing simply because of its bottle.”

Produced by Champagne Cattier, the brand's first bottling was introduced in 2006 and is identifiable by its distinctive gold bottle with pewter Ace of Spades labels. Like Krug, the Brignac's Brut Gold is a multi-vintage style sourcing fruit from both Premier and Grand Cru vineyards. Two other cuvées, a Rosé and a Blanc de Blancs were released in 2008. An appearance in the Jay-Z music video of "Show Me What You Got" prior to the launch of the Armand de Brignac brand sparked wide discussion on sites covering hip-hop and popular culture, following Jay-Z's public fallout with the makers of Cristal Champagne. As a result, Mr. Cattier's brand received more publicity in two weeks than it had in two decades. "I would have never imagined a few months ago that we'd become part of this mysterious and exclusive rap world," he said. "Jay-Z is a remarkable man. I'd like to invite him here to visit the winery."

Subsequent tastings by international wine critics have acknowledged Armand de Brignac as one of the world’s top Champagnes, though it comes with a price to match.

The vineyards are located in the Côte des Blancs, the Montagne de Reims and in the Côte des Bar. These direct imports are a great alternative to the big houses of Veuve Clicquot, Moet & Chandon and the like, with their distinctive packaging, quality and keen pricing making them exceptional value for Premier Cru Champagne.

Billecart-Salmon's 2016 vintage continues the house's drive to creatively lower dosage levels, coming in with just 1.9g/L in this year of extreme weather. The 2016 will be at its best from mid-2024 but is already showing a mature clementine and juicy apricot fruitiness, warmed up with ground nuts and fragrant raspberry. Neat and slightly reticent on release, there is a subtle insistency here, and it will lengthen and unfurl with more time on cork. The most impressive of Billecart's recent vintage releases. Made with 100% grand cru fruit, 25% of which was vinified in small and large oak. Drink 2024 – 2030.

The 2007 Brut Cuvée Nicolas François Billecart is positively stellar. Elegant, polished and sophisticated, the 2007 dazzles with effusive aromatics and gorgeous balance. It's not an obvious wine, though, but rather a Champagne built for long, patient cellaring. The 2007 is 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay taken from Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, Ambonnay, Verzenay and Verzy for the Pinots and Chouilly, Avize, Cramant and Mesnil for the Chardonnays. In other words, as good as it gets for villages. The wine was done mostly in tank with about 15% of the lots vinified in oak. Dosage is 6 grams per liter. Drink 2027 - 2047.

Disgorged with six grams per liter dosage, the 2007 Brut Cuvée Nicolas François is showing very nicely, offering up aromas of fresh bread, citrus oil, crisp yellow orchard fruit, white flowers, verbena, macadamia nut and hints of biscuity complexity to come. Full-bodied, chiseled but fleshy, its vinous core of fruit cloaks the vintage's brisk acids to achieve real plenitude in a year that's sometimes rather tautly austere. Long and penetrating and complemented by a pretty pinpoint mousse, this is a real success. Drink 2021 - 2041.

Billecart-Salmon is one of my favorite Champagne houses, and their non-vintage Rose (Lot #L85547401905M) is a consistent winner. The rich, powerful palate is caressed with baked bread, pear, yeast lees and citrus flavours which have a full creamy like feel. Elements of roasted almonds, subtle oily cashew and dried honey characters chime in on the dry, crisp finish. Long, complex aftertaste.

Comprises 40/33/27% pinot noir/chardonnay/pinot meunier, 73% grands and premiers crus. The low dosage of 2g/l and the warm vintage allow the fruit-based flavours free rein - white peach, Granny Smith apple and nectarine. The finish and aftertaste remain fresh and long. A house in grand form.

Entirely vinified in oak this Champagne pours well with a white frothy mousse followed by a deep straw pale gold base wine colour with a very fine bead that has excellent persistence. The nose is quite rich and full exhibiting aromas of toasty yeast lees, almond, baked bread and hazelnut. Reflective of the nose the palate possesses big rich flavours of toast, yeast lees, almonds and baked bread finishing with some nutty hazelnut like characters on the back palate. Clean dry finish with a nice creamy mouthfeel. Long aftertaste of toasty yeast lees, almond and hazelnut.

The complex bouquet reflects the primary fermentation in oak casks; the palate no less so thanks to the quality of the premier and grand cru reserves, also matured in oak. But it’s all a question of degree; there’s a core of citrussy acidity underwriting the freshness and length of the wine. 7 years on lees; disgorged December ’20, 7g/l dosage.

In 1964 Annamaria Clementi purchased a small house called ‘Ca’ del bosc’ and two hectares of land, surrounded by chestnut woods. The first vineyards were planted in 1968 and two red wines were released in the early 1970’s. Her son Maurizio Zanella, inspired by a trip to Champagne at just 17 years of age, returned with a vision to make great sparkling wine. What was once a small house in the countryside has since grown to be the eminent sparkling wine in Italy and one of the best in the world. Cuvée Prestige is both the essence of Franciacorta and the Ca' del Bosco style. A combination of 134 vineyards contribute to the blend of 75% Chardonnay, 10% Pinot Bianco and 15% Pinot Nero. The grapes are vinified separately and 20% of reserve wines are selected from the cellars to give the wine its distinctive and complex character. The wine refines for 28 months before release and is bottled with just with 1.5 grams of sugar per litre (= Extra Brut) and 48mg of sulphur.
A plentiful mousse holds well in the glass after being poured. Pours well with a creamy white mousse and pale gold base wine colour. Very fine delicate bead showing excellent persistence. Refined aromas of yeast lees and brioche are overlaid by some toastiness with following notes of baked bread and cashew. Showing both richness and finesse the palate has seamlessly integrated flavours of baked bread, yeast lees and toastiness over some almond and brioche. Clean dry finish with a moderately creamy mouthfeel. Long aftertaste of baked bread, yeast lees, cashew and toasty brioche.

Charles Heidsieck might be nicknamed Poor Man’s Krug given the astonishing number of vintages in the reserve wines, their age (10 years in tank), and the seven years the wine spends on lees once blended and bottled. It is an exceptional wine in the mouth, supple, layered, complex and long.

Remarkable depth of mature aromas - tons of candied lemon peel, dried pear and brioche - plus wonderful textural richness on the palate make this stand out amongst the regular Brut NVs. Then comes the intense and very long, mineral finish to crown this prince of the category. Based on 2016 base wines, but with 52% reserve wines, almost a third of which were 10 to 20 years of age. Drink or hold.

Very refined and long there’s a subtle creaminess to the winter strawberry, peach, toast, baked bread, yeast lees and citrus flavours. Crisp acidity lends itself to a dry refreshing finish. In 1986, Eric Dhondt and Edith Grellet decided to stop selling off grapes to negociants and started Dhondt-Grellet. Their focus on farming translated into honest Champagnes from great holdings across the Côte des Blancs. Now with their son, Adrien, assuming a larger role, they are refocusing their efforts and producing some of the best Champagnes they ever have. Nowadays the company is lead by Eric and Adrian.

The vineyard is situated primarily in Grands and Premiers Crus of Cote des Blancs namely Cramant, Chouilly, Cuis but also Sézanne for their Chardonnays. They also cultivate some Pinot Noir in the Vallée the la Marne. Mainly located in mid hillsides on easy to work, very lightweight calcareous soils, their plots enjoy an outstanding location and a southeast exposure. The average age of the vines is 40 years. They also have their own cellars in Flavigny to age the wines before bringing them on the market. Les Terres Fines is their 100% chardonnay from premier cru vineyards from Cuis.

Disgorged in June 2021, the NV Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Premier Cru Les Terres Fines (2018) offers up aromas of ripe citrus fruit, green apple, fresh bread, peach and toasted nuts. Full-bodied, ample and vinous, it's fleshy and generous, with lively acids and an enlivening pinpoint mousse. Seamless and complete, it concludes with chalky grip. Drink 2021 - 2028.

The NV Champagne Blanc de Blancs Les Terres Fines Extra Brut was vinified in barriques and is more vinous in its aromas of toast, baked apple, and Meyer lemon. The palate is dry and ripe, with notes of pear, peach, smoke, and white flowers. It has underlying tension and is persistent in its length. Its assertive style will need some time to unwind and harmonize to its full potential. Disgorged July 2021. Drink 2024-2036.

Buoyant, fine and lacy the mousse holds well gradually subsiding to reveal a pale straw coloured base wine that has pale gold edges and an exceptionally fine and persistent bead flowing through it. Citrus, toast and yeast lees aromas jump from the glass trailed by pear, green apple and light biscuit notes. Refined and elegant yet long, the palate is brimming with citrus and green pear fruits which overlay a back drop of yeast lees, green apple, oyster shell and faint cashew. There’s good tension and focus but this is not a Dom Perignon to drink now, it requires some further bottle age to fill out at which time it will no doubt garner another point or two. Concludes dry and racy with a gentle chalk tinged aftertaste.

The 2012 Dom Pérignon is a dense, powerful wine. I am almost shocked by its vinous intensity and raw, unbridled power. The 2012 reminds me of the 2003, but with more finesse and not quite as pushed. Mildew, rain and frost were challenges and resulted in low yields, something that was further compounded by warm, dry weather that concentrated the fruit even more. Those qualities result in a dense Dom Pérignon endowed with real phenolic intensity. It is one of the most reticent young Doms I can remember tasting, I wouldn’t even think of opening a bottle for at least a few years. (Originally published in May 2021). Drink 2022 - 2052.

Wonderful elegance and balance to this Dom Pérignon with cooked apple, lemon and hints of white pepper and salt. It’s medium-bodied with really fine bubbles and balance. Spicy at the end. So wonderfully fresh, linear and long. Racy and elegant. A DP that invites to drink right now. All about finesse. Tension, too, with precise phenolics and bright acidity on the back palate. Subtle energy. Drinkable now, but will develop beautifully in the bottle.

The 2012 Dom Pérignon has turned out very well indeed, unwinding in the glass with notes of Anjou pear, smoke, toasted nuts, freshly baked bread and crisp stone fruit. Medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, it's still tightly wound, its incipiently fleshy core of fruit framed by racy acids and chalky grip, complemented by a classy pinpoint mousse. A touch drier and a touch less reductive than the 2008 out of the gates, these two vintages are clearly destined to be compared for some time to come; but at this early stage, my instinct is that the 2012 will have the edge in the long term. This eloquent Champagne has an enticing waft of Mandarin orange on the nose that continues on the palate, which is layered with flavors of crushed blackberry and cassis, toast, chopped almond, graphite and oyster shell. A bright, finely-knit and harmonious version, with a lovely, raw silk-like mousse, and a lasting, expressive finish. Drink now through 2037.

What a magnificent bouquet for this Dom Pérignon 2012! Pastry, a hint of smoke and classic brioche notes provide a compelling counterpart to eager yet elegant aromas of citrus (lime, tangerine and kumquat) joined by those of fresh fruit, herbs, liquorice and menthol. There is even a refreshing note of ivy. The palate is tense, vibrant and very fresh despite its impressive density, which meets its match with an unending finish. This 2012 embodies the very essence of Dom Pérignon with such a concentrated degree of intensity, along with a capacity for ageing that it is surely destined for a second life in a P2 edition. The 2008 Dom Pérignon is the first time the estate has released a wine out of order (the 2009 was released before the 2008) but the estate loved the wine so much they felt it warranted additional aging. This is a rich, powerful wine that still shows incredible purity and elegance, with a stacked, concentrated feel on the palate. It’s rare to find such a mix of ripe, pure, concentrated fruit paired with this level of purity, focus, and precision. This is a legendary Dom that surpasses all the great vintages of Dom I have experience with, including the 1990, 1996, and 2002. Drink 2018-2038.

The 2008 Dom Pérignon is fabulous, but quite remarkably, it was even more open when I tasted it a year ago. Bright, focused and crystalline in its precision, the 2008 is going to need a number of years before it is at its best. Lemon peel, white flowers, mint and white pepper give the 2008 its chiseled, bright profile. Several recent bottles have all been magnificent. What I admire most about the 2008 is the way it shows all the focus, translucence and energy that is such a signature of the year, and yet it is also remarkably deep and vertical. In other words, the 2008 is a Champagne that plays in three dimensions. Drink 2020-2058.

There's power to this graceful Champagne, with the vivid acidity swathed in a fine, creamy mousse and flavors of toasted brioche, kumquat, pastry cream, candied ginger and poached plum that dance across the palate. An underpinning of smoky mineral gains momentum on the lasting finish. Drink now through 2033.

The finest release of this iconic cuvée since the 1996 vintage, the 2008 Dom Pérignon wafts from the glass with an incipiently complex bouquet of Meyer lemon, green apple, dried white flowers and oyster shell, with only subtle hints of the smoky, autolytic aromas that have been such a prominent signature of recent releases. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, deep and complete, its notable flesh and amplitude controlled by incisive acids, with a youthfully exuberant but elegant mousse and a long, beautifully delineated finish. Considering the sheer size of this cuvée, it's a remarkable achievement and a fitting release with which to conclude Richard Geoffroy's tenure as chef de cave. Given the 2008's intensity and balance, I suspect purists will be anticipating later disgorgements with lower dosage and more time on the lees with particular enthusiasm. Tasted three times, with consistent results. Drink 2018-2040.

Seven champagnes were submitted for this tasting at prices significantly higher than this great wine. It’s a simple outcome of supply and demand, for Dom’s production is measured in millions of bottles each year. There are often several vintages on sale, none better than this vibrant, elegant, incredibly youthful 2008.

The best Dom since 2002. A vintage with very restrained, powerful style that has been released non-sequentially after the 2009. This has a lighter stamp of highly curated, autolytic, toasty aromas than many recent releases. Instead, this delivers super fresh and intense aromas of lemons, grapefruit and blood-orange peel. Incredible freshness here. The palate has a very smoothly delivered, berry-pastry thread with light, sweet spices, stone fruit and fine citrus fruit. This really delivers. Drink now or hold.

The Ambonnay based Egly-Ouriet are a reference point for grower producers in Champagne, known for their impeccable vineyard management and fastidious winemaking skills. Much of their production is raised in oak barrels, with extended aging on lees a feature, and there's no better example of this than their V.P. bottling. The V.P. stands for ‘Vieillissement Prolongé’ (prolonged ageing), with the wine spending an average of seven years on lees before being disgorged with an extra brut low of 2g/l dosage. A blend of 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay, the fruit comes from Ambonnay, Bouzy and Verzenay.

Even though it was only Disgorged: a few months ago, the NV Brut Tradition Grand Cru is super-expressive. The Brut Tradition brings together parcels in Ambonnay, Bouzy and Verzenay that, together, yield a Pinot-driven Champagne with tremendous breadth as well as cut. Red fruit, dried flowers, mint, spice and lemon confit are some of the aromas and flavors that build in this wonderfully open-knit, inviting Champagne from Egly-Ouriet.

With this release, based on the 2014 vintage and disgorged in June-July 2019, what was formerly Egly's Brut "Tradition" becomes simply his NV Brut Grand Cru, a simplification that paves the way for several new cuvées from this reference-point grower that I'll be reporting about in due course. Changes in nomenclature aside, the wine in the bottle has never been better, and the latest release soars from the glass with an expressive bouquet of golden orchard fruit, honeycomb, citrus zest and freshly baked bread. On the palate, it's full-bodied, deep and layered, with real concentration and intensity, built around racy acids and chalky dry extract. The finish is long and lingering.
