Smirnoff traces its origins back to 1864, when Piotr Arseneyevich Smirnoff founded his vodka distillery in Moscow. Piotr, like many Russian distillers of his time, used the absorption qualities of charcoal to filter his vodkas. But Piotr used more charcoal than other distillers and developed his own method of filtering vodka through multiple columns of charcoal.
Owned by the English, now bottled in Australia and imported from the U.S.A, Smirnoff ranks as the most popular mid-priced vodka on the market. Over 15 million bottles are sold annually (equivalent to half a million bottles per day), in over 150 countries world wide and it is estimated that one dozen bottles are sold every two seconds! Yet another addition to the Smirnoff range is 'Blue Label' Smirnoff, also referred to as 'Formula 57'. This is a higher-proof alternative to Smirnoff's Red label vodka and at export strength, Blue Label works well with any mixer, is the perfect base for a martini or will go it alone as a fiery shot. Its production employs high quality raw materials and a triple distillation in a continuous process to 97% alcohol by volume. The finest batches of spirit are then blended, filtered ten times and reduced to 43% Alc./Vol. through the addition of de-mineralised water. The spirit is passed through eight tonnes of activated charcoal to achieve the prerequisite smoothness and purity prior to bottling. (The charcoal for the filtration process is selected from a sustainable source of hardwood trees such as maple, birch or beech). These procedures ensure a clean, clear crisp result with a clean, grainy nose and a hint of sweetness.
