“…a superb malt from a distillery at last being recognised for its excellence” – Jim Murray.
Theancient Orkney Isles, north of Scotland are en route to the Shetlands.Norse warriors lie buried in the area with their swords and horses anda 5000 year old broch stands close to Scapa distillery. Founded in1885, the distillery itself consists of five cliff top warehouses overlooking the beautiful waters of Scapa flow - a stretch of water linking the North Sea to the Atlantic Ocean - famous for its roles inboth World Wars. The distilleries peaty water supply stems from the gushing Lingro Burn, the quality of which is partly attributed to Scapa's clean, peaty taste. Conversely, the distillery uses only unpeated malt. Today the distillery is owned by Hiram Walker and managed by Highland Park, which lies less than half a mile north of Scapa. Scapa have only just released their 14 year old expression which replaces the 12 year old. It is like its younger cousin but with afuller body and a certain additional richness of flavour.
Tasting notes: Nose: Hints of honey and cumquats but a tad sappy. Palate: relays of mouthwatering barley sprinting between the shards of honey. Finish: toasty, a subtle bitterness blends well with the lingering barley honey; the tongue works over time to work out the multi layered structure of a superb malt from a distillery at last being recognisedfor its excellence. 40% Alc./Vol. Rating: 88

Further notes… Goldenamber color. Brackish, earthy, chocolate covered pretzel, and spicearomas. A round entry leads to a smooth light-to medium-bodied palatewith toffee, cola nut, and brown spice flavors. Finishes with anangular, peppery, metallic finish. Regrettably disjointed, particularlyin light of the very nice, previous bottling of the 12-year-oldexpression.
