Shiraz

Characterised by its intensity of colour, palate weight and concentration of ripe plum, black pepper and red berry flavours, Australian Shiraz tends to taste richer, riper and more full-bodied than most, often layered by the use of toasted American oak and less frequently French oak. Look out for hedonistic examples from all areas of South Australia, Central Victoria and to a lesser extent, cooler climes like Western Australia. Browse our top rated Shiraz wines here.

Crafted from old bush vines planted in the 1950’s and 1960’s which are grown without irrigation on various types of granite soil. The vineyards are planted on varying facing slopes bringing tremendous variety to the fruit. Fruit from other selected sites within the appellation are also purchased to complete the final blends.

The fruit is fermented 100% whole bunch in large concrete tanks and wooden vats, with post ferment maceration continuing for up to 4 months. Maturation takes place in a mixture of barrels and large, neutral foudres. Inspired by the history of the old, long forgotten Cape Blends that were around before the advent of modern winemaking.

A blend of 56% Shiraz, 19% Grenache, 12.5% Cinsault and 12.5% Tinta Barocca, the 2018 Family Red Blend begins with a fruity and rustic nose of wild brush, smoked meat, black olive, elements of dark cherry and plum before showcasing subtle aromas of wilted flowers and baked clay. Medium-bodied, the palate offers flavors of juicy tobacco and bitter black tea and a balanced structure with firm, buttressing tannins as the wine sits on the tongue. The wine concludes with a drying finish and lasting flavors of black cherry skin and dusty plums with a nuance of undusted leather. I can see this being incredibly versatile with food. Just give it some time in the cellar before opening. Drink 2022 - 2032.

The 2018 Red Blend, comprising Shiraz, Grenache, Cinsault and Tinta Barocca fermented in concrete tanks, offers appealing mulberry, black plum, curry leaf and potpourri aroma that gradually gain intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with red berry fruit, white pepper and clove. The finish has a precision that I admire and a saltiness that lingers in the mouth. Toothsome! Drink 2022 - 2032.

Produced from fruit grown in several old-vine vineyards across McLaren Vale, spanning from Blewitt Springs and Seaview in the North to Willunga and Sellicks Hill in the South. The fruit is picked early in the morning and crushed into open-top concrete vats for fermentation with indigenous yeast. After fermentation is complete, the wine is gently pressed into French oak barrels where it matures for 12-14 months.

Midnight black core with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Pronounced aromas of liquorice and blackberry fill the nostrils with some vanillin oak, scorched earth and pepper notes also evident. Rich and opulent the full bodied palate is swamped with blackberry, liquorice and dark plum fruits which carry a plush feel. Spicy vanillin oak, earth and pepper elements sit in the background. From a range of sites of varied geology, this was fermented in open concrete vats with indigenous yeasts; élevage in French oak puncheons and hogsheads. From a cool year, there’s notable elegance to this, though the fruits are both red and black – dark cherry and plum, blackberry, raspberry – accented with a tarry, charry note, master stock spices, mint, cacao nibs and cracked earth and iron-like mineral notes. It over-delivers at this tariff. Drink by 2031.

The concentration of fruit in this 2019 The Medhyk Shiraz is evident from the very first sniff. It is pungent with raspberries, blackberries, salted licorice, star anise, pink peppercorns, char, tea, blood and even sun-dried tomatoes. In the mouth, the wine is exactly this. This is good, defined by a splay of ripe grape tannins melding effortlessly with a band of oak (17 months, all Burgundian, 20% new), gentle bottle age and the reductive stamp of the house, imparting tension and, in this instance, not too much of the iodine note. Old-vine punch. Mottled blue and black berries, Seville orange, some spice and soaring Blewitt Springs violets. Plush, but taut. Measured, but generous. Very good warm-climate shiraz, as far as warm-climate shiraz goes.

The Warboys vineyard is organic and certified biodynamic and is planted adjacent to the cellar door in McLaren Vale. The fruit for the 2019 Warboys Shiraz was handpicked, wild fermented with a combination of whole berries and whole bunches, then matured in new and seasoned French oak for 14 months. On the nose, this is layered with deli meats and salted licorice, coffee grounds, purple berries and exotic spice. In the mouth, the wine is supple, fresh and concentrated: a dangerous combination for Shiraz lovers. Wines like this rarely get their chance to age. Lovely. Good. Yes. Drink 2022-2037.

Atze's Corner is owned by sixth generation Barossa Valley vigneron, Andrew Kalleske. At the heart of the project are low-yielding 1912 and 1951 Barossa Valley Shiraz vines planted adjacent to the locally-known Atze's Corner, in an unassuming plot of land to the east of Nuriootpa on the valley floor. Fruit is also sourced from several other vineyards, also owned by the Kalleske family. Two of the Barossa Valley's prized sub regions make up 100% of the Shiraz in this wine - Ebenezer and Koonunga. Open, small-batch fermentation, hand plunging and pumping and minimal filtering and fining define Andrew's unobtrusive approach. Maturation takes place in a combination of new French oak (30%) with the balance in seasoned French and American oak for a period of 18 months.

Vines date back to as far as 1868, the youngest 1992. Right there you have an inkling of what is to come: a stunning concentration of fruit. Impressive, but the supple, savoury tannins are up to the task of meeting that deep intensity of black fruits, woody spice and violets. What a team for the future. Of course, this is not to forget the vanillan warm-oak component. A wine of history that still stands firm today. Drink by 2040.

Inspired by the great Shiraz wines of the Northern Rhone in France, this wine contains Shiraz from the best elevated vineyards in Great Western and is co-fermented with a small amount of Viognier (2%). The viognier helps brighten the colour, lift the aromatics and polish the Shiraz flavours on the palate.

Delicious plum, blueberry and liquorice fruits carry a succulent feel across the mid weighted palate and show excellent intensity. Four thousand five hundred and sixty bottles of this extraordinary wine were made from the 1997 vintage - that's a total of 380 dozen available for the entire world. ORIGNAL TASTING NOTE UPON RELEASE: Each November we anxiously await the release of this wine and with each successive vintage our expectations reach new levels, and yet in the back of our minds we have a nagging tall poppy syndrome - Viv Thomson surely can't produce a better wine than he did last year? He has to falter some time! Viv is too smart to be complacent, and as each vintage is blessed with spectacular fruit, he manages to create its perfect bottle expression. However, when nature turns against him as it did in 1999, there was no Thomson made - severe frosts saw to that. The 1997 Thomson is an expression of Shiraz fruit concentrate. This is almost the perfect wine. When tasted, it achieved the remarkable score of 99.3 out of 100, the highest ranking wine in memory at the time. Opaque crimson colour with mauve edges. Exceptional nose of violets, blackpepper, spice, liquorice allsorts, confectionary, vanilla and an aniseed end note. Totally mouthfilling. Concentrate of Shiraz! Flavours of blackpepper, spice, liquorice and blackcurrant, filling every cavity of the mouth. On the back palate the blackpepper flavour explodes and carrys through the after flavour in an exceptional long aftertaste that lasts for 5 minutes and more. Velvet smooth tannins. Perfect balance. AN AUSTRALIAN TREASURE AND A WONDERFUL PIECE OF HISTORY.

All Syrah that spent 23 months in new barrels, the 2019 Clos Du Lican is a gorgeous effort that brings solid depth and richness, yet it's the purity and finesse, as well as the quality of the tannins, that really set it apart. Revealing a deeper ruby/purple hue as well as lots of blackberry and mulberry fruits, it has perfectly integrated oak, medium to full body, silky tannins, and just a complex, incredibly impressive bouquet of peppery herbs, sandalwood, violets, and baking spices. Despite solid levels of ripeness (the alcohol is over 15%), it has a terrific sense of freshness, and again, the purity and balance are something to behold. This gorgeous Syrah will evolve for 15+ years. Drink 2022 - 2038.

Iconic Australian Shiraz.

Shiraz was first brought to Australia in 1832 by James Busby, unwittingly with the help and co-operation of the French themselves! Today, Shiraz has become the country's most planted variety, synonymous with the ultimate expression of Australian red wine making. Icons such as Penfolds Grange and Henschke Hill of Grace are now highly collectable and recognised amongst the world's great wines. It remains our biggest selling varietal.

Find the best Shiraz wines here.

The spiritual home of Shiraz in Australia remains old vine vineyards in the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale. Central Victoria also leads the charge, however, newer regions such as Margaret River, Heathcote and the Yarra Valley (Victoria) are taking Shiraz in alternative directions. Top producers include Torbreck, Sons of Eden, Standish, Greenock Creek, Mr. Riggs, d'Arenberg and Kay Brothers. Also look out for wines from France's Northern Rhone. Leading appellations here are Hermitage and Cote-Rotie. Other appellations such as Cornas, St. Joseph and Saint-Péray produce full bodied, early drinking reds that offer a great introduction to the region's style.
