Rose

Pale coloured, dry rosés akin to what the French call "Vin Gris" have become hugely popular, usually enjoyed with Mediterranean dishes like grilled fish, tian (a cold vegetable flan) and salads, but also as an aperitif with finger foods. Made as a "Rose de presse" (juice straight off the press), the grapes are pressed rather than macerated (as is the case in a "Rose de Saignee"). Grenache, Cinsault and Cabernet are typically used. Following the lead of Southern France, Australian winemakers are responding with affordable, fresh wines of high quality. Look for drier styles from cooler climates, and riper, more flavoursome expressions from McLaren Vale and Barossa. Browse our top rated Rose wines here.

    Notes from producer....
This Grenache from Heathcote received a few hours skin contact while being gently pressed, fermented without the addition of yeast to dryness in old French barrels and spent five months maturing on yeast lees. It is a delicately coloured rosé, fresh and fragrant of roses, red currant and under-ripe strawberry with a vibrant, dry, textured palate. It balances the line of having enough texture and flavour without having too much. It's proven to be a pleasurable wine to make as the harvest date/ripeness is critical and the amount of pressing, mixture of barrels, amount of time on lees and number of barrels to go through malo-lactic are all impactful decisions.

Pibarnon's unique blend of 65% Mourvèdre and 35% Cinsault comes from the estate's beautiful, terraced amphitheatre on La Colline du Télégraphe, a pine-covered hilltop overlooking the Baie de Bandol. This is the highest vineyard in Bandol, situated at 300 meters above sea level, benefiting from cool nights and refreshing sea breezes.
Cinsault is pressed directly to tank, contributing elegance, fragrance, and balance, while the Mourvedre is bled off after a few hours of skin contact (saignée style), adding vibrancy, complexity, and a chalky structure. The two juices are blended before undergoing spontaneous fermentation in barrel.

    Other Reviews….
The citrusy, mentholated 2022 Bandol Rosé was crafted with a blend of 65% Mourvèdre and 35% Cinsault and matured six months in barrels. It displays aromas of pomegranate, citrus, spring flowers, iodine, jasmine and crushed stones, followed by a beautifully defined texture, a fleshy core of fruit and racy acids that underpin a delicate, well-delineated and calcareous finish. It's going to drink nicely in its youth, but I suspect it will also age gracefully over the next 2-5 years. Drink 2023 – 2028.

Clos Cibonne, a distinguished estate in the Côtes de Provence AOP, is the southernmost of the 18 Cru Classé growers in the region. Its 15 hectares of vineyards are positioned just 800 meters from the coast, nestled within hillsides that open toward the sea. This unique location allows for excellent air circulation, extending the grape-growing season and cooling the vines. The soil here is a blend of schist and clay.
The Tradition Rose is produced from the most historic section of the Clos Cibonne estate, composed of 90% Tibouren and 10% Grenache grapes, reflecting the traditional rosé-making methods from a century ago, before modernization took hold. Following fermentation, the wine is matured on the lees under a layer of flor-yeast for one year in 100-year-old oak (5000L) foudres.

Situated 610 meters above sea level and overseeing Central Victoria, the Cobaw Ridge vines thrive in the granite-rich mountain soil, working hard to produce well-balanced grapes. This unique site's challenges, combined with the Cooper's dedication to sustainable and natural practices, result in wines that truly reflect their origin and time. No additives, fining, filtration, or stabilization are applied, except for minimal sulphites before bottling. Syrah grapes are pressed as whole bunches and allowed to settle before fermenting in large neutral oak barrels, Qvevri amphora, and an experimental ceramic vessel.

    Other Reviews....
Some of the wine spends time in qvevri and the rest in older oak barrel. All hits at Cobaw these days. Consistency is a by word. Wonderful stuff. Biodynamic.
It’s a pretty, rosy coloured thing. Juicy, crisp red cherries, some strawberry notes, a touch of anise and some earthy, Aussie bush characters faintly in there. It slips across the palate nicely, a little tension from lacy tannin, a saline undercurrent too. It feels attractive and easy to drink, perhaps not as complex as some iterations of this wine, but does the trick and delivers lots of pleasure and refreshment. Reminds me a bit of Tavel rosé from better producers. Like. Drink 2023 - 2026.

The inaugural release of Cobaw Ridge's "Negociant Wines" is sourced from M. Chapoutier's certified organic vineyards in the Pyrenees. These vineyards are cultivated with skill and care, fitting seamlessly with Cobaw Ridge's vision and objectives of honest wines produced from Organic Fruit. The Syrah Rosé is obtained from the renowned "Shays Flat" vineyard, where the soil is rich in shale, mudstone, quartz, and iron-rich loam topsoil, and these characteristics are distinctly evident in the wine it produces. The grapes are gently pressed as whole bunches, followed by fermentation and maturation in large, seasoned oak barrels and terracotta Tinajas Amphora.

    Other Reviews....
A new wine from Cobaw Ridge and one that took a bit of deliberation. Indeed, this is an excursion off the estate, sourced from Shay’s Flat in the Pyrenees, a certified organic site that a few Central Vic winemakers know well. This one is made in the Cobaw Tinajas, a suite of terracotta amphora that house other of their ‘domestic’ wines. Intrigue!
It’s a salty, minerally, high toned rose with a strong sense of tart red berries, crunchy cranberry, dusting of herbal, near alpine greenery and a whiff of white balsamic to lift it all. The palate is minerally plus, in the parlance, and shows more of the bouquet with a decided zing that feels refreshing and interesting though some technocrats may take umbrage, and fair enough. Crispness and crunch in that texture too – thank you for refreshing each sip – though you’d also call it a little hazy. Lovely stuff. Drink 2023 - 2026.

    2022 Conterno Nervi il Rosato
    Piedmont, ITALY
    $67. 99
    Bottle
    $815.88 Dozen
    ABV: 14%
    Closure: Stelvin

The Nervi estate is the oldest in the DOCG of Gattinara, north of Piedmont, founded in 1906 by original owner Luigi Nervi. A long time admirer of the wines and friends of the owners at the time, Roberto Conterno (of Giacomo Conterno fame) purchased a 90% stake in the winery in 2018, renaming it Conterno Nervi. A relatively new designation, Gattinara became a DOCG in 1990, and while the wines show similarities to those of Piedmont, generally Gattinara reds have a more elevated feel, savoury and structured, with plenty of acidity and fine tannins allowing for great longevity.

Nervi's Rosato is sourced from four crus across the Gattinara commune, harvested around 1-2 weeks earlier than the Gattinara DOCG fruit. Following a long, cool fermentation, the wine is racked into steel tanks and left on lees for 6 months prior to bottling. Expect a rosé with exquisite texture and interest, along with bright and crunchy berry fruit.

    Other Reviews....
Airy and fresh yet complex as well, the 2022 Il Rosato impresses with its lifting notes of rose, crushed stone, peach skins and lemon oil. Refined yet juicy and fruit-forward, this casts lime-tinged apple and green melon easily across the palate, energized by vibrant acidity. The 2022 buzzes with residual tension. The medium-length finish ends with a crunchy sensation as sour cherry nuances fade. The magic of Nebbiolo Rosato. Drink 2023-2024.

Their son Cyril joined his father in 2000, and is now in charge of both vineyard and winemaking activities for the Domaine. Cyril is increasingly focused on vineyard health, to deliver wines with pure varietal expression and a sense of place. They are among the most serious wines from the area, and while juicy and approachable young, have the capacity to age gracefully for many years.

Marsannay has long had a reputation for fine rosé production, yet since the upgrade to appellation status in 1987 and the shift in focus to white and red wines from the commune, rosé output has dropped significantly. Thankfully Cyril Audoin is one of the few that has kept up this tradition, and his is one of leading examples on the market today.
Made from Pinot Noir grapes this a light, energetic Rose with plenty of mineral zing. Brilliant salmon colour with a watery hue. Blossoming from the glass is a mix of strawberry and peach fruits followed by some pomegranate, light musk and stony mineral notes. Tangy citrus, grapefruit and strawberry fruits overlay a cranberry and stony mineral infused back drop. Finishes dry and zesty with crisp acidity and a refreshing aftertaste.

55% Grenache, 15% Cinsault, 15% Syrah, 5% Mourvèdre, 5% Counoise and 5% Carignan. And how much does importer Felix Riley love rosato!
Peach, blood orange, redcurrant, rosehip and dried flowers, a little nutmeg and spice, and a smattering of smoky dried herb. It’s crisp, sports a little blood orange bitterness, a fine milky/chalky texture, peach skin and citrus tang, a little leesy creaminess, and a tight and sappy finish of good length. Classic Provence. I guess when you open a rosé, your mind starts to wander to spring and summer, though I must confess, I’m rather fond of autumn and winter.
Pale in colour with tangerine, spice, redcurrant, slight smokiness, and fennel. Crisp and crunchy, bright tang of citrus fruits, powdery texture, and a rosehip and pomegranate finish of good length. It can be served very cold, and it’s still good, or cool, where it becomes more complex. This is a good thing, as you can have a bet each way. Drink 2022-2025.

In the class system of Australian rosé, I reckon Ben Portet is at worst a viscount, possibly a prince. Just saying. Clear glass bottles for rosato are probably not ideal, but I accept that people need to see the colour for their money.
Good wine, and invariably good and tasty is the rosato from Portet. Redcurrant, strawberry, a little aniseed and dried rose perfume. Crisp, a little milky in texture, with blood orange tang, smooth yet sappy, and a little bit savoury and nutty. It’s always a good drink, and same again in 2022. Excellent. Fresh and tasty, a little truffle/earthiness too. Drink 2022-2024.

Described by wine commentator Mike Bennie as "one of Australia’s brightest young winemakers”, Joshua Cooper is steadily forging a reputation for thoughtful, elegant, and confident wines from grapes grown in Macedon and surrounds.

Cabernet Sauvignon saignee of fruit from Dash Farms, post a six hour soak on skins. Again gastronomic and textured, this offers an extra degree of structure, complexity and potential to age into the medium term.
Intense and evocative aromatics of currant, gravel, sweet green herb, spice and violet precede a palate of great texture, length and balance. This wine will become more savoury, and complex with time in bottle. A very serious rose style. Please decant if drinking young.

One of the world’s great rose wines, or so I says. This one is nero d’Avola, frappato and a lick of moscato from a mate’s vineyard. Lamoresca a remarkable natural wine producer and agriturismo in the middle of nowhere Sicily, or the middle of everywhere once you get there and take it all in. Beautiful produce grown on that farm too. Behold the cacti that fringe the property, like out of a Wild West set. Fragrant, jolly with red berries, lifted with rose petal scents, a whiff of brined green olive and sage leaf. Incredibly succulent texture, glass shard acidity keeping things fresh, tightly wound fruit flavours dusted with significant spice and mixed Italian herbs. Amazing, saline minerally finish with tart, cranberry tang in tow and a lick of ashy slate-wet pebble. Firming tannins are lacy, ultra-fine but there. Oh my, such a good wine. Drink 2021 - 2025.

Dry Rose: the perfect luncheon wine.

A glass of chilled rosé on a hot summers day adds a casual elegance to bbqs or alfresco drinks with friends. While rose can range from sweet to very dry, we favour the latter as the perfect 'middle of the day' wine, either on its own or to match a diversity of foods. France leads the way. Look out for top expressions from Bandol and Tavel, however the Langeudoc is home to a bevy of Rose bargains. From Australia, producers like Torbreck, Charles Melton, Turkey Flat, Dominique Portet and Levantine Hill are worth seeking out.
