Lively acidity and slightly chalky tannins. Finishes taut and snappy.

I also tasted two vintages of the entry-level red. The 2021 GR-10 Tinto was produced with 85% Garnacha and 15% Cariñena. which was fermented with full clusters and matured in barrels of different sizes and one 4,200-liter oak vat for seven months. It has 13.5% alcohol and very good freshness. There's more Cariñena in this 2021 than in the 2020, and it has a lighter color—they used a vineyard that wasn't used in 2020, and it delivers lighter-colored wines. This is surprisingly harmonious and bright. It's fine-boned, medium-bodied and zippy, though maybe the tannins are not as perfect as those of the 2020, and it has some grip; but this comes through as very harmonious and elegant. A bargain! Drink 2023-2028.

From vineyards with an average age of around 50 years old approximately a quarter of this wine was aged in new French oak barriques for a period of 6 months.

Midnight black heart with a dark red black tinged hue. A mix of new leather and graphite like notes greet the nostrils. Peppered meats, sour cherry and fresh herb notes ensue. Medium bodied with a bright tangy like feel, a mix of spicy sour to dark cherry fruits are followed by some earth, leather and peppered meat characters. The very spicy 2018 Viña El Señorito de Ercavio is a single-vineyard Cencibel planted 25 years ago on limestone-rich soils. It fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel and matured in second use French oak barrels for nine months. It's ripe, fruit-driven and modern but with the rustic Cencibel character and some dusty tannins. Drink 2022-2028.

Grenache, or Garnacha when it hails from its home in Spain, has finally elevated itself from workhorse to superstar. This one is from the northeast provinces in Spain and we are told has been blended with some other Iberian varietals. Who doesn’t enjoy a mystery! Deep maroon in colour. Big and bold and oozing flavour, we have notes of black cherries, spices, dry herbs, blackberries, deep fruit aromas, chocolate and coffee grinds plus a hint of aniseed and some plummy touches. This is a little darker in fruit and flavours than many Grenache/Garnacha. Supple and sleek, there is quite bright acidity here, nice length and fine tannins. Delicious now and should remain so for the next four to six years. Great food style. Drink 2022-2028.

The 2020 Monastrell is pure Monastrell in this exceptional vintage for the grape (in previous years it had up to 20% Garnacha, but there was little Garnacha in 2020). The grapes come from sandy vineyards on the valley floor, and they fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and a shortish maceration. The wine matured in 500-liter oak barrels and 5,000-liter oak vats for nine months. In 2020, there were more grapes from old vines that were used before for the Vino de Finca, which was discontinued. This wine is very aromatic, elegant, expressive and reaching a level I have not seen before in this wine. It's refreshing, light, balanced, nuanced, with velvety tannins and very clean, really transcending its price point. Balanced is the word, and it's also available and affordable and sets the tone for the 2020s. 186,000 bottles produced. There are different lots of this wine from the same master blend. I tasted the first bottling from October 2021. Drink 2022 - 2028.

2020 Casa Castillo La Tendida Monastrell

The 2020 La Tendida is a new wine from 85% Monastrell from younger vines in the paraje (lieu-dit) La Tendida within the property and 15% Garnacha from seven-year-old plants on a north-facing slope on sandy limestone soils covered in gravel in 2020. Here, they changed the concept, prioritizing location of the vines instead of age, so they used younger vines but from better soils. So, this is a different wine from the Vino de Finca, and some of the old vines that had been used for the Vino de Finca go back to the basic Monastrell instead of coming here. Like most wines in this pure Mediterranean vintage, it fermented with 25% to 30% full clusters and indigenous yeast in underground stone pools with a short to medium maceration and temperatures up to 32 degrees Celsius. The wine spent 12 months in a combination of 500-liter barrels and 5,000-liter oak vats. Most wines in 2020 are around 14.5% alcohol and have a medium pH of 3.55 and mellow acidity (4.85 grams, measured in tartaric acid per liter). It's young and tender but more elegant, subtle but nuanced and very precise. The wine is medium-bodied, the tannins are very fine and there is a sensation of fragility but with energy and strength, a red with light. Very Casa Castillo. 40,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in January 2022. Drink 2022 - 2029.

New from Casa Castillo, this comes from younger Monastrell (85%) and Garnacha vines, fermented with about one third whole bunches and indigenous yeasts, followed by 12 months in 500L barrels and 5,000L vats. Youthful with lovely freshness, layered with dark fruit, and exceptionally good value for followers of Casa Castillo. Organic, and a welcome addition to the stable. Drink 2022 - 2029.

Celler Pardas is part of a new generation in Catalonia that emphasizes local terroirs and indigenous grapes like Xarel.lo, Macabeo, and Sumoll. Started in 1996 by winegrowers Ramón Parera and Jordi Arnan, they acquired the Can Comas estate in Alt Penedés. Their white wines feature Xarel.lo, while Sumoll takes the spotlight in their red wines.
Certified Organic Sumoll, grown in the Mediterranean-maritime climate of Penedes, undergoes fermentation in concrete tanks with natural yeasts followed by six months of maturation before bottling. This is an easy-drinking and vibrant style with plenty of character.

    Other Reviews....
The young-vine Sumoll 2021 Sus Scrofa was produced with grapes from three vineyards they planted in 1999, 2001 and 2014, selected from old vines throughout Cataluña. It fermented with 50% full clusters and matured in concrete for six months. It has only 11% alcohol and a low pH of 3.3. This is young, unoaked and fruit-driven, floral and very expressive. In the old times, there were up to 8,000 hectares of Sumoll in Penedès, but a lot was uprooted and used for homemade wine. Thankfully, the variety is coming back, as it has a lot of potential. They started in 2008 when the grape was admitted by the appellation of origin Penedès, and the idea is to show the naked variety. It's a refreshing wine, balanced, medium-bodied. The variety can have some rusticity with firm and dusty tannins. It finishes dry. 29,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2021. Drink 2022 - 2026.

2021 Cesar Marquez Perez Pico Ferreira Mencia
    Mencia, SPAIN
    $82. 99

    $995.88 Dozen
    ABV: 13%

Cesar Marquez has Bierzo running through his veins, and is the latest generation of the Perez family to own the leading Castro Ventosa winery in north-western Spain. Growing up around surrounded by the region's leading exponents, including a lengthy apprenticeship with one of the world's greatest winemakers, his uncle Raul Perez, has shaped much of what Cesar values in wine. While he still manages the family estate, Cezar started his own venture in 2015, and is already one of the most exciting young prospects in Spain.

Having a deep understanding and access to some of the best vineyards Bierzo has to offer, Cezar focuses on preserving purity and freshness, highlighting the promise Mencia has in the right place when made with attention to detail. Cezar is structuring his line-up of wines in Burgundian fashion, making a broader appellation wine, a village wine, along with several single vineyard offerings. Winemaking is similar on all wines, with grapes partially destemmed and fermented in open barriques, before spending 12 months in old barrels without any racking or top ups before bottling the following winter. These are wines that are not just great examples of Bierzo Mencia, but wines that truly stand shoulder to shoulder with the finest from any region or country.

Pico Ferreira is located in the village of Corullon, and while only 300m from Sufreiral it’s on the opposite side of the mountain with a north-east exposure. Soils here are very poor, thin and rocky slate where the roots struggle to penetrate. This leads to small clusters and wines that are often more robust than others in the portfolio.

    Other Reviews....
The super elegant and fresh 2021 Pico Ferreira comes from northeast-facing ancient vines in the village of Corullón on shallow slate soils that deliver small bunches. Each of the plots fermented separately with their own yeasts with 50% full clusters and 45 days of maceration, and the wine matured in a combination of 500- and 600-liter oak barrels for around one year. It has a harmonious and elegant palate with 12.92% alcohol and fine-grained tannins. It is serious, with tension and the stony feeling from the slate soils. This has more depth and complexity than the 2020—more serious. 1,504 bottles were filled in December 2022. Drink 2024-2034.

Valtuille Vino de Villa replaces the previous Las Firmas bottling, and is Cezar's village wine sourced from two sites in the village of Valtuille, considered the most prestigious village in Bierzo.

    Other Reviews....
The 2021 Valtuille Vino de Villa is his village wine that has replaced his old Las Firmas starting in 2019. For this, he selects plots of old vines with a field blend of Mencía with some 10% Alicante Bouschet and 5% whites and other reds on sandy soils that tend to produce finer and more elegant wines. It fermented by plot in 1,000-liter vats with some full clusters and different macerations, ranging between 15 to 60 days. It matured in 500-liter oak barrels. The grapes were picked quite early, and all the wines have below 13% alcohol and very fine and elegant tannins, the signature of the cooler year. 5,215 bottles produced. The super affordable 2021 Parajes really overdelivers in this cool year. It was produced with grapes from up to 45 different plots in nine villages, trying to capture the essence of Bierzo. This regional red mixes soils and altitudes, mostly very old plots and therefore planted with a field blend with a majority of Mencía but also around 10% Alicante Bouschet and 5% whites or other reds like Bastardo, Souson or Estaladiña. It fermented by plot in stainless steel and plastic bins with some full clusters, indigenous yeasts and variable macerations, ranging between 15 and 60 days. Bodegas Cien Y Pico is the story of four winemakers from different countries, Spain, Italy, Bulgaria and Australia, coming together to produce wine from some of the oldest vines in the DO Manchuela.

A blend of Garnacha and Tintoera sourced from 100 plus year old bush vines with maturation taking place in 20% new Radoux 225 litre barriques for a period of 19 months.
Impenetrable inky black in colour with a very deep dark red black hue. Earthy dried herb and spicy mint characters also chime in. Concludes ripe and robust with a slightly grippy feel.

    $330. 00
    Bottle
    $3960.00 Dozen
    ABV: 15%

It’s time to leave your preconceptions at the door, as Comando G produce Garnacha (Grenache) unlike anyone else in Spain. Comando G’s Daniel Landi and Fernando Garcia craft Garnacha up in the near inaccessible hills of the Sierra de Gredos mountains which are miles away (figuratively and literally) from the dark, powerful, brooding wines of Priorat that hit the scene 20 years or so ago. These are a different breed of Garnacha, light, ethereal, built on tension and finesse. There’s no lack of concentration however, and they have much more in common with high-end Burgundy than what you would normally associate with Spain. Word is well and truly out on these special wines, with demand far outstripping supply and prices skyrocketing on the secondary market.

    Other Reviews....
The 2020 El Reventón is now a wine from Comando G and no longer a Dani Landi wine, whose personal project came to an end with the 2019 vintage. It's still exactly the same wine from the same vineyard in Cebreros on slate soils. It has a lot of cherry fruit, a liquorous part à la Rayas, with 15% alcohol. It's round and juicy but with no sense of heat, mixing notes of rose hip with the lavender, curry and chamomile but in a subtler way, less Mediterranean. It's fine-boned but super tasty with an almost salty/umami twist. 1,708 bottles and 50 magnums produced. It was bottled in March 2022. Drink 2023 - 2029.

The backward and serious character of the red 2020 El Tamboril Tinto shows the backward character of this place, a cool site with a longer cycle and later harvest, so it always attains more color. The wine has more stones, more bone than meat and chalky, talcum powder tannins from white soils that create wines with electricity and energy. This always has more Italian in character, with more Barolo tannins than Burgundy. It should develop nicely in bottle. 1,553 bottles and 50 magnums produced. It was bottled in May 2022. This year, Tamboril has the deepest color among Comando G’s parcel wines, even if it is still just medium ruby with a subtle orangey rim. But it certainly is glossier. Of course, there is a lot going on here, with tangy red berries and a splash of black fruit, too. Mineral and spicy with a hint of menthol. This has a bold structure with very firm, minerally textured tannins on the palate followed by a long, tight finish. Drink or hold.

The 2021 La Bruja de Rozas is their edgiest and most austere mineral and soil-driven version of their entry-level red. It's herbal, with no concession for fruit, and it has electricity and grip. It's a good preview of what's to come from 2021. It has a lot of 2018 and 2016 characteristics, a cool summer, a year with rain and even some during harvest that complicated matters and made them lose some grapes, but there's more grip, more minerality, more depth, layers and subtleness. It needs time in the glass, and my guess is that at age eight it's going to reach an outstanding level. A grown-up Bruja, it’s more for soil fanatics than the general public, and it’s one to lay down in your cellar (by the case) while you drink your 2020s. Drink 2024 - 2030.

Plenty of fruit here with wild strawberries, red cherries and stones with a hint of watermelon and white pepper. Excellent, grippy structure on the palate with a medium body and a long, airy finish. Garnacha. Delicious now, but can hold, too.

Migan and Palo Blanco are both very old vine wines from the Valle de la Orotava zone, although they don’t bear the D.O. stamp. The old vines are trained in the Trezendo fashion: braiding new shoots over older ones until the vines begin to resemble old dreadlocks weaving over the landscape. The terrain is flatter than Táganan, more conducive to farming. Migan is two parcels of Listan Negro, both over 100 years old, while Palo Blanco is a single vineyard from the town of Los Realejos planted on black volcanic soils.

    Other Reviews....
The more reductive and austere 2021 Migan has the classical Orotava profile, the spicy pepperiness, some smoky undertones and a medium-bodied palate with very fine, slightly dusty tannins. This wine is bottled a bit later; 12,500 bottles and 150 magnums were filled in December 2022. Drink 2024 - 2030.

Nervy, nicely funky, precise and mineral nose with a “protective” flintiness and an alluring peppery edge to the wild berries and pomegranate. Benje refers to an area high above the cloud cover on the western edge of the Tiede volcano. It’s an area that produces markedly different wines, from the sappy freshness of the coastal zones but still carries the hallmark lightness of all of Envínate’s wines. Benje Tinto is straight Listan Prieto, Benje Blanco is Listan Blanco. Both are grown on a mixture of old ash and red clay at over 1000m above sea level.

    Other Reviews....
The 2021 Benje comes from a very warm and dry year in Santiago del Teide when the vines got blocked and suffered. They did a softer vinification, with shorter macerations and cooler temperatures, and they also bottled it a little earlier. The wine is a bit more reductive with a slight touch of rusticity. 25,000 bottles and 300 magnums produced. It was bottled in June 2022. Drink 2023 - 2027.

Táganan is both the name of a village on the very north eastern tip of Tenerife and a local term for steep slope. Envínate make two reds and two whites from this village; Táganan Tinto and Blanco, which come from multiple old parcels and two crus, parcelas Campanario and Margalagua. All the wines are field blends containing a dizzying array of obscure local varieties grown on very old bush vines in the steep volcanic soils overlooking the ocean.

    Other Reviews....
There's an herbal and reductive twist in the 2021 Táganan Tinto, from the black basalt soils of Taganana. The palate is austere and stony, very different from the 2022 I tasted next to it. In 2021, they started bottling this wine after nine or 10 months of élevage, before the following harvest. 4,000 bottles were filled in July 2022. Drink 2025 - 2030.

Envínate, which literally translates as “Wine Yourself,” is the project of four young passionate winemakers: Roberto Santana (based in the Canaries), Jose Martinez (Almansa), Laura Ramos (Murcia) and Alfonso Torrente (Ribeira Sacra). The four met while studying oenology in Alicante in 2005 and formed a collective based on a shared philosophy of wine and a desire to explore the ancient, Atlantic influenced terroirs of western Spain.

In 2008, the group bought their first vineyard in Ribeira Sacra, then took control of vineyards on the north side of Tenerife, and followed with a single patch of Tinta Amarela in Extremadura. Finally, in 2012, the group began working with a site in Almansa, where Jose lives and works, planted to Garnacha Tintorera. In each region, they work old, previously abandoned vineyards, but importantly for a project with such spread, one of the team lives full time in each location, working the vineyards year round.

Migan and Palo Blanco are both very old vine wines from the Valle de la Orotava zone, although they don’t bear the D.O. stamp. Compañía de Vinos Heraclio Alfaro is located just a few kilometres away from the village of Alfaro in the east of La Rioja Both the winery and its first wine are named after Heraclio Alfaro Fournier, a Spanish aviation pioneer who crossed borders and transcended barriers as both a pilot and a designer of airplanes and engines. In 1914, he was one of the youngest people in the world to earn the official pilot’s title, and he made and flew the Alfaro I, the first aircraft made entirely in Spain.

The 2016 Viña Ardanza Reserva was produced with 80% Tempranillo and 20% Garnacha that matured in used American oak barrels for three years, where it was hand-racked from barrel to barrel six times in the case of Tempranillo and five times for the Garnacha, as it had a slightly shorter élevage of 30 months. Against all odds, I found the 2016 to be fresher than the 2015 and less developed, despite the fact that winemaker Julio Sáenz told me he considers it a warmer year. But I have found many wines I like in 2016, and the wine feels very clean and quite harmonious, younger and less developed, with more primary notes and a velvety mouthfeel. 600,000 bottles produced. The wine was bottled in June 2020. Drink 2022 - 2032.

Their young and fresh red 2018 Viña Alberdi, already a Reserva (Crianza in Spain), matured in oak barrel for two years—in new barrels for the first year and in used barrels for the second year. During the élevage, they racked the wine manually from barrel to barrel four times. 2018 was a year of lower alcohol and more freshness in the wines, and they thought the wines were not designed for the long haul; so, they didn't produce any other wine, and so the only wine from 2018 IS VIÑA ALBERDI! Which means that all the Tempranillo grapes that were destined for 890, 904 and all the other wines went to this wine. They didn't use the Garnacha (which was sold in bulk). So, this is a super- Viña Alberdi, which shows more Crianza style in this cooler vintage but with very good depth and complexity, perhaps a more modern and fresher style. The wine has a seamless palate and a juicy texture, with more color than other vintages, more intensity, more fruit... It has grapes from very good vineyards and poor soils that were never destined for this wine. Highly recommendable and very versatile. It has potential to age. They produced a whopping one million bottles of it. It was bottled in March 2021. Drink 2022 - 2028.

Terroir al Limit is Dominik Huber's hommage to the wines of Priorat before Wine Critics from the 90's were chasing high-octane wines. His restrained approach to winemaking has resulted in wines that speak more of finesse, purity, and freshness, showing that Priorat wines do not have to be heavy, thick, and oaky. The use of high-altitude, old-vine plots allows him to harvest ripe fruit with maximum freshness, coupled with the use of whole-bunch fermentation, Huber’s wines have an almost Burgundian-like shape and structure, generating vibrancy and succulence.

The Historic Negre is a 75% Grenache and 25% Carignan cuveé, roughly the same blend as would have been used here generations ago. The grapes are fermented as whole clusters with indigenous yeast, and then aged for six months in a 5000-litre concrete tank. The style is juicy, lifted, and enticing, with floral tones over cherry fruit, subtle spice, and earthy, smoky tones.

Bodegas Vega Sicilia is Spain's most prestigious wine estate, and has produced some of the most famous wines in the country's history. Founded in the 1860's and based in Ribera del Duero, two hours from Madrid, initial plantings at the estate included Bordeaux grapes Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Malbec, along with the indigenous Tinto Fino (Tempranillo).

    Other Reviews....
The 2018 Valbuena comes from a cooler vintage with good yields that required sorting and selecting in search of a happy and vertical version of Valbuena, pushing a little more and giving the wine a little more oak, especially American (5%). It was produced with 96% Tinto Fino and 4% Merlot that went through a three- to four-day cold soak and fermented with indigenous yeasts followed by malolactic in stainless steel. The élevage was in new and used 225-liter oak barrels and 21,000-liter oak vats. It has 14.5% alcohol and a pH of 3.8 and 4.78 grams of acidity (tartaric), so it's ripe and with mellow acidity that gives it a mellow mouthfeel. This is a very spicy vintage for Valbuena, getting closer to the style of Único (while at the same time I felt the 2018 Pintia from Toro was getting closer to the aromatics of some vintages of Valbuena, like 2010). It was a late-ripening year with a tendency toward freshness in the wines. The palate is medium to full-bodied, with very fine tannins that made the wine nicely textured and very elegant. There is a lot of regularity in the Valbuena of the last few years, here with more tension and freshness of the 2017, a little more balsamic even. 180,580 bottles, 5,528 magnums and some larger formats produced. It was bottled in May 2021. Drink 2023 - 2032.

Brilliant pale straw colour with a watery hue. Aromas of pear and lime meld into green apple, hints of dried honey and spicy fresh herb notes. Fresh pear and peach flavours fill the mouth with a rounded feel underscored by lime, wet slate and gentle infusions of fresh herbs. Lively acidity lends energy and tension to an elegant aftertaste that has some orange tang to it.

2018 and 2019 are a return to cooler vintages in Rías Baixas, and I was able to compare the entry-level Albariño bottling from Albamar from both years, the youngest of which, the 2019 Albamar, had just been bottled. Here, they use purchased and own grapes, and it's produced in a fresh style. This is a little riper than 2018, which is sharper. Xurxo said this reminds him of the 2016 in the sense that this is ready and approachable. It has a vibrant saline finish. Despite its approachability, it should also last in bottle. Drink 2020-2024.

A blend of 70% Tempranillo and 30% Garnacha aged for 26 months in oak, some new. Totally opaque black dark red colour with a bright purple red hue. Aromas of dark to black cherries intermix with black raspberries, liquorice, incense, earth and spicy dried herbs. Juicy yet also inky in its feel, the mid weighted palate is blessed with black cherry and dark raspberry fruits which are underpinned by red liquorice, earthy incense nuances and infusions of fresh herbs. Excellent freshness to the finish with polished tannins and a succulent red to dark fruited aftertaste.

Àlvaro is one of the group of 5 famed ‘pioneers’ who arrived in Priorat in 1989 primed to recover and reinvent the remnant old local Garnatxa of the region. Camins is a summation of the region, taking quality fruit from 60 growers and 7 of the 12 villages of Priorat. In part, it expresses vineyards being replanted to local Garnatxas, but it also serves as home for French varieties culled from the site-specific wines. Produced from mostly Grenache with a blend of other indigenous and international varietes, the fruit is de-stemmed, fermented in open concrete, wood and inox vats, and matured for 8 months in larger, old French oak.

Gorgeous, bright fruit with raspberries, black cherries and lavender with some schist. It’s medium-bodied with very polished and integrated tannins that go on and on. Drink or hold.

The regional blend 2019 Camins del Priorat is a blend of 35% Garnacha, 24% Syrah, 17% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Cariñena, 10% Merlot and 3% other varieties. The grapes were destemmed, lightly crushed and then fermented with the natural yeasts in a combination of stainless steel, oak and concrete vats. After fermentation, it matured in barrel and oak vats for four months. This wine showcases the power and concentration of 2019, an extraordinarily warm and dry year, but the wine has great finesse. There are more balsamic aromas from the Bordeaux varieties, which incredibly didn't dehydrate that year: the leaves took a long time to turn yellow. There are notes of licorice and something balsamic. This is juicy and chewy, powerful, pungent and intense, with muscle but with great balance and very clean. This is the most modern and international of their wines, with a showy profile. A triumph over the conditions of the vintage. 237,000 bottles produced. Drink 2020 - 2024.

Shimmering violet. Vibrant blackberry, cherry and floral aromas are complemented by hints of licorice and succulent herbs. Concentrated bitter cherry and dark berry preserve flavors stretch out and turn livelier with air. Gently gripping tannins give shape and focus to a long, spicy finish that shows very good clarity and repeating florality. Drink 2022 - 2028.
