This wine is produced from 100% Malbec – Argentina’s signature varietal in a joint venture between Chateau Lafite Rothschild and Nicolas Catena. Originally from France, Malbec was introduced to Argentina by a Frenchman, Jean Pouget, in 1868. A very fruity, exuberant and powerful grape, Malbec has adapted wonderfully to the Mendoza region where the sunshine and cool nights soften its tannins and reveal its velvety texture.

Opaque black dark red colour with a dark crimson red hue. Aromas of dark cherries and blackcurrants are followed by some cedary tobacco characters with spice end notes. Medium bodied and possessing excellent richness, the wine has developed some more complexity and savoury tones over the last 12 months having lost it’s youthful inky characters. Generous flavours of ripe blackcurrants and dark cherries are prevalent over some cedary tobacco characters and spice. Very fine grained tannins. Good length with a medium to long aftertaste of blackcurrant, dark cherries, cedar, subtle earth and spice. Drinking well now it will only get better over the next 4-5 years.

The fruit for this Chardonnay was harvested at optimal ripeness and the juice was 'wild' fermented in French oak barrels of second and third use. It was then aged in the same barrels for 9 months.

Brilliant pale straw colour with greenish tinged edges and a watery hue. On the nose lifted nectarine and white peach aromas intermingle with dried honey, citrusy nougat and spice. Since our original tasting some year and a half ago, the palate has put on weight and filled out both in terms of its richness and texture. Generous white peach and ripe nectarine flavours laced with dried honey have a gentle creamy feel, finishing with good freshness. Citrusy nougat and spice elements present themselves on the back palate. Good length with a moreish aftertaste that’s medium to long. Delightful everyday drinking at this price.

The first hectare of vines was planted on the Domaine Grand Nicolet property in 1875. The winery was established in 1926 and further plantings of Grenache and Carignan were made, replacing cereal crops. The present owner, Jean Pierre Bertrand purchased the Estate in 1999 which has now expanded to 20 hectares (50 acres) of vines. Rhone super star Philippe Cambie acts as consultant.

The Cotes du Rhone blend is produced from predominately Grenache and Syrah with some smaller amounts of Carignan and Cinsault also included. Aged in concrete vats for 6-8 months. Excellent colour for an entry level Cotes du Rhone. Opaque dark red black core with a dark red hue. Very spicy aftertaste of black raspberries, liquorice, scorched earth and pepper.
