Only fruit, from the oldest parcels of vines at Ata Rangi makes it into this wine. The fabled Abel clone, allegedly smuggled from Burgundy in the mid-70s, makes up 40% of the blend. Incorporates 40% whole bunch fruit with maturation taking place in French oak (35% new) for a period of 11 months.
Deep dark red heart with black shaded edges and a dark red hue. Enchanting the olfactory senses are delightful perfumed like aromas led by red to dark cherries, wild strawberries and subtle anise infused with a mix of rose petals and violets. Hints of blueberry, spicy cedar and light forest floor are also evident. Rich, dense dark plum, ripe cherry and strawberry fruits flood the expansive palate with infusions of fresh herbs, spicy cedar, subtle earth and dried meat characters adding further nuance. Quite supple and full in texture it boasts outstanding concentration and power with a solidly built yet seamlessly integrated matrix of tannins providing great structure. Finishes very long and fleshy yet vibrantly robust.

A beautiful nose of sliced strawberries, crushed cherries, violets, grated nutmeg and a hint of white pepper. Some hibiscus, too. Supremely vibrant and perfumed with fine tannins that run the length of the medium-bodied palate. Textural. Ground spice and fresh fruit are intertwined, providing wonderful depth and complexity. So long as well. Seamless balance. Superb. Sustainable. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

The 2020 Pinot Noir reminds me of walking into a cathedral - that quiet, cool hush that falls as you walk through its doors. This is harmonious, supple, unshowy and unforced. Hailing from old vines and delicately textured despite the abundance of fruit concentration. Refined tannins with the finest of gravelly textures, akin to licking a stone. Scented yet restrained, with a fragrance of sweet red fruit, tea leaf and cedar spices with persistent acidity that carries it. Very complete and already approachable. Drink 2023-2038.

Burn Cottage is a family-owned, biodynamically farmed 10-hectare vineyard set in the foothills of the Pisa Range in New Zealand’s Central Otago. With consulting help from Ted Lemon, of Littorai fame, the first blocks were planted in 2003 to Pinot Noir with the balance made up of Riesling and Gruner Veltliner. The property is managed holistically, incorporating cattle, chickens, bees, and native fauna to create a balanced environment for grape cultivation.
The Moonlight Race is a mixture of three sites managed by the winery, the estate Burn Cottage Vineyard in Lowburn, and the Sauvage Vineyard and Luna Vineyard in Bannockburn. Handpicked fruit is fermented with 7% whole bunches for 17 days before being pressed to French oak barrels (22% being new oak) for maturation.

The 2021 Moonlight Race Pinot Noir is a blend of three different vineyards and multiple blocks and clones (56% is Burn Cottage in Lowburn, 22% is Sauvage Vineyard and 22% is Luna Vineyard in Bannockburn). On the nose, there is fresh red cherry, plum skin, raspberry pip and brine. The tannins are super fine in the mouth—pulverized and chalky. This is a gorgeous wine, mineral and cooling, with a svelte shape and satisfying flow of flavor across the tongue. Great! And, it must also be said, great value. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2023 – 2033.

The 2021 Burn Cottage Vineyard Pinot Noir is alive and energetic, svelte and composed. As I write this, I am sitting at the bottom of the Burn Cottage Vineyard in Lowburn, looking up the rows. This is a mineral, nuanced expression, with graphite and white tea, pomegranate pearls, raspberry licorice, rosehips and crushed pink peppercorns. This is what I came here for. It’s thrilling, lacy, delicate and focused. Exciting wine, exciting drinking. It sits on the palate nicely—evenly weighted, and it spools through the long finish... yes! 13.5% alcohol, sealed under natural cork. Drink 2023 – 2036.

The Te Muna Road vineyard, sited 7km from Martinborough town, is planted on an ancient dried riverbed of stony clay soils, and fruit for this wine is sourced from a higher terrace than the parcel-selection Aroha. The winemaking – by Julian Grounds – is similar; however, this sees more (34%) whole-bunch fruit and less (27%) new oak. Anne Krebiehl MW: Juicy, flowing, with dense red cherry, freshness, nothing overdone. Lovely now, will also last the distance. Very balanced. Justin Knock MW: Deep blue and purple fruits, creamy aromas, plush and layered. Expansive and powerful but also very fine. A really wonderful wine. Dirceu Vianna Junior MW: Youthful, vibrant and elegantly scented. Ripe dark fruits, spice and elegant leafy notes. Great concentration, silky texture and savoury complexity. Drink 2023-2033.

Commencing with meticulous site selection and vineyard design in 1991, Felton Road's story is one of refusal to compromise. A strict 100% estate policy with fully organic and biodynamic viticulture ensures that the fruit arrives at the winery as pure as can be, while the entire estate comes as close to true sustainability as is possible. A commitment to hands-off winemaking: gravity flow; indigenous yeasts and malolactic; an avoidance of fining and filtration; all help preserve the wine's expression of its terroir. The result is Riesling, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir which accurately express the authenticity and complexity of the unique vineyards.

Felton Road manages four properties covering 34 hectares in the Bannockburn subregion of Central Otago. Calvert Vineyard is located on Felton Road and is just 1km east of The Elms Vineyard and the winery.

The 2022 Calvert Pinot Noir is currently closed and firm on the nose (although a point to note, the Calvert and Block 5 were bottled in September, and it is now late November. The other Pinots from this vintage went to bottle in May). In the mouth, however, this wine hits a massive stride. Forthright tannins accompany powerful fruit and fine acidity to make an impact. There’s pomegranate and cherry, violets, rosehips and capers, with green olive tapenade and even a hint of bone broth. Once again, the acidity in conjunction with the tannins combine to bring on a cool finish... lovely. I do love the strawberry through the finish. 14% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Nice people at Luna Estate, doing nice things. So that’s nice.  Here we have a wine from 1992 plantings, with a bit of whole bunch and 15% new oak.
Cherry and plum, baking spice, coffee grounds and clay, and lively dried herb and green capsicum top note. It’s plush, a bit savoury, quite a fleshy feel in the mouth, rich cocoa tannin, a subtle dried orange peel bitterness, and crushed rock kind of thing happening on the finish. I like that it doesn’t feel too forced, nor trying too hard.  Nice expression of vineyard here. A charmer. Drink 2021-2027.

After cool, damp weather at flowering, the 2021 vintage in Martinborough was never going to be a bountiful one, but the second half of the season was regarded by many growers as near perfect and the quality of what was finally harvested in this North Island Pinot-Noir hotspot was enviable. Deep scarlet in colour, the aromas of this forthright, vital Pinot evoke both raspberries and plums. On the palate, too, the wine is energetic and exuberant; its structure derives from that force of fruit, darkened by oak and lifted by ripe, fruit-dense acidity rather than tannins. The overall mouthfeel, thus, is smooth rather than grippy, despite this impressive depth of fruit. This is assured Pinot Noir from one of the southern hemisphere’s reference zones.

The second label of Palliser Estate, Pencarrow has been a perennial customer favourite over the years for good reason. It’s rich fruit and plump texture drawing high praise at a price that’s hard to beat. The majority of the fruit for this wine was sourced from Palliser Estate’s East Base and Clouston vineyards with 5% whole clusters included in the ferment. Maturation took place in French oak of which 25% was new for 10 months.
Deep dark red in colour with black tinged edges and a dark red hue. Elevated spicy dark to black cherry and anise aromas are married to dried herb, toasty cedar and forest floor notes. Rich black cherry, dark plum and anise flavours carry a juicy feel across the mid weighted palate. Toasty cedar, dried herb and spicy earth characters take form on the back half. Medium grained tannins with a finish that’s deeply fruited, spicy and lingering.

Driven to create one of the new world’s great cool-climate vineyards, it took Mike and Claudia Weersing 15 years and a quixotic global journey that included a lengthy stopover in Burgundy before they found their perfect site. Inspired by the climate and soils of that region, the duo finally found their special place in the limestone-rich soils of Waikari in North Canterbury. From here Mike and Claudia established Pyramid Valley and emerged as NZ pioneers of both biodynamic practices and high-density viticulture. For almost 20 years they inspired and/or challenged all those who came into their orbit. Their minute scale and exceptional dedication to their soils and vines led to some incredible wines being produced. First visiting the vineyard in 2007, Steve Smith MW (then of Craggy Range) was one of many affected by what he describes as one the most compelling and unique vineyards he has ever visited. When Mike’s health went into decline, the Weersings were forced to sell and Smith and his partner Brian Sheth acquired the estate in late 2017. The spectre of Burgundy is writ large over the foundation and ethos of Pyramid Valley, yet we should not expect imitations in terms of the style of the wines. Rather they have their own very distinctive style and energy, and this is precisely as it should be with terroir-driven wines; uniqueness is the point.

Both of Pyramid Valley’s Pinot Noir vineyards are densely planted on clay/limestone slopes. Earth Smoke sits on the richer soils of the two: an expansive, east-facing slope with strong, beautifully structured soils that are comparatively high in limestone. The name here comes from the nickname given to fumitory, a plant of the poppy family that can be found thriving in this 0.85-hectare plot. Although both wines share a familial DNA, the later-picked Earth Smoke is typically the more structured and darker of the two, with more fruit weight to go with its tender, fine tannins.

    Other Reviews....
The 2020 Pinot Noir Earth Smoke is a massively different wine from its stablemate Angel Flower, giving a more expansive wine that blossoms in the mouth without any sense of weight. There's elegance and sense of precision. And do you know what? It feels special. If I were tasting blind, aromatically, I'd think it were a cool climate Syrah with sandalwood, fennel, agave and white pepper characters in abundance alongside pure cherry fruit. The finish is fresh and precise. Drink 2024-2035.

Dubbed as ""New Zealand’s greatest winery"" by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate and ""New Zealand's first growth"" by Decanter (amongst many other superlatives), Te Mata is a family-owned Estate in Hawke's Bay, on the east coast of New Zealand’s North Island. Established in 1896 on a former pastoral land-holding, the Estate has been producing classic wines modelled on Bordeaux varieties and blends with a modern interpretation.
Coleraine is an assemblage of the finest wines from distinct plots within Te Mata Estate’s oldest vineyards on the Havelock Hills.

A very elegant young Coleraine with lovely aromas of oyster shell, lead pencil, sweet tobacco, black currant and moss. Very perfumed and expressive. Medium-bodied with fine tannins that are polished and energetic with some citrusy acidity underneath. Some dust to the texture. This is the second highest blend of cabernet sauvignon in the history of Coleraine with 84% cabernet sauvignon, 13% merlot and the rest cabernet franc. March release. Best after 2027 and beyond.

The 2022 Coleraine is laden at this stage with the outrageous attractiveness of youth. I mean, it's irresistible. There's raspberry, nori, rose petals, coffee grounds, star anise, salted licorice, sun-dried kelp/nori, warm pine (I know this smell because I was hiking around the Te Mata peak yesterday, and there was a fallen pine tree lying in the sun, and it smelled great) and layers of peppercorns. In the mouth, the wine is so fresh, so alive, with so much energy, but it already is showing the svelte line of this house, this place. With a hint of raw cocoa laced through the finish, I'm sad to push this glass away. It will be the last time that I taste it for a while. A ripper. Excellent. This is composed of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc. Drink: 2023-2057.

Erin Larkin - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (Dec 15, 2023)

Speaking with winemaker Phil Brodie, he tells me that it was an interesting year, with some rain events in spring, then the highest number of days above 30c in summer experienced to date, a little rain during the early part of vintage, with the second half of vintage drying out. Very small berries in 2022, with crops about 40% down on average.
I tasted this over two days, and gee, it really moved about. Started off with a pop of fragrance and more rugged tannin, then it eased itself back into a more typical Coleraine profile, though for sure it’s a different style in some respects with its unusually high Cabernet Sauvignon component of 84%, the remainder being 13% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc. Release date is around Feb 2024.
Black fruit, some red, pencil lead, a little aniseed and floral perfume, nori, baking spice, pimento, slight vanilla. Medium-bodied, a fair bit of chew, dark fruit and dark chocolate, porcini mushroom umami, grainy tannin, concentrated and chewy, earthy and ferrous, with a bright line of very ‘mineral’ acidity on a long finish. Excellent, albeit a more Cabernet focussed expression of Coleraine, which marks it out as being different, and on that point such a worthy of addition to the cellar, though of course the wine is outstanding irrespective of that. Like many of Te Mata's 2020 reds, this young pup needs a little time to open if drinking now. Once it does, there're elegant aromas of cherry and blueberry fruit, violets and roses, ground black pepper, cloves and a slight meatiness in a well-tucked bed of mocha oak. Tangy red fruit on the silky palate is tightly wound by fine tannins and lifted by a crunch of acidity. A unique Pinot that bears the Te Mata stamp of place, polish, freshness and structure. The 2021 Coleraine is a superstar. It's the best I recall seeing on release in recent years, a total "pleasure-dome" situation. Tea tree, oyster shell, lavender, black tea and tobacco leaf burst from the glass. Seamless, polished tannins grace the palate. There is texturally more silk to the tannins here than the Awatea tasted beside this (another great wine, for what it's worth). There are notes of creamy red fruits, cassis and bramble, Asian five spice, black cherry and graphite/mineral skein. The persistence of flavor here is extraordinary; it's detailed and nuanced but insistent in the mouth. The tannins cup the fruit in the mouth. Winemaker Phil Brodie said there are no enzymes or added tannin; it's all from the vineyard. This is a blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot and 12% Cabernet Franc. 2021 was left in barrel a little longer than the 2020 to refine the tannins. Drink 2023 - 2043.

56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc. Because I care, I just nipped down to the cellar to open a bottle of the 2020 Coleraine to compare and contrast with the 2021. The 2020 is packed with tannin, texture, earthiness, and power, while the 2021 is brighter, a bit more frisky in acidity, with more leafy perfume. A little more flamboyant, but equal. It’s not a competition, more of a love in. The 2021 may well be the ‘better’ wine in time, though it’s kind of hard to tell, and may just come down to personal preference. Release date for this in Australia is February 2023.
Dark and intense, lots of perfume, red and black fruits, tobacco, a leafy pop that’s pure varietal class, creamy oak, lead pencils, aniseed and spice. Medium to full-bodied, a flood of flavour, super ‘mineral’ feel to the acidity, tannin is superb, and the finish is so long. Light but so dense. There’s a fresh raspberry juiciness here too, and an extra dimension of tension and energy. All the graphite and presence. Incredible wine. Drink: 2026 - 2045+.

The 2021 Coleraine exhibits a commanding presence and majestic poise. The bouquet reveals classic aromas of cassis, dark plum and violet with whispering nuances of cedar and cigar. There are hints of warm spices, compounding the pleasure upon inhalation. The palate is bold and graceful at once, enhanced by plush texture and multi-layered mouthfeel, beautifully framed by refreshing acidity and fine chalky tannins. Robust and substantial with a great line and length, which seem to go on to infinity. This youthful wine is already impossible to resist, but time will reward those who can wait. The 2015 vintage of the A2 has 31% whole bunch inclusion and employed 13% new French oak, aged for 10 months in barrel. The talented PJ Charteris is contracted as the winemaker.

Semi translucent dark red colour with a bright crimson to dark red hue. Fragrant scents of ripe red cherries, strawberries and hints of sour cherries drift from the glass with infusions of violets, some meatiness, spicy cedar and dried herbs also evident. Deliciously savoury with light body weight, abundant richness and an excellent power wave the palate dishes up scrumptious ripe red cherry and strawberry flavours over some meaty characters, subtle violet infusions, dried herbs and spicy cedar. Supple mouthfeel with an energetic finish and velvety tannins. Outstanding depth with a long aftertaste of spice, ripe red cherries, strawberries, a subtle meatiness, dried herbs and lightly smoked cedar.

Produced from only the oldest parcels on the estate, the 2018 season was one of the warmest experienced at Ata Rangi. A drier than usual November and very warm December led up to regional temperatures breaking records in late January. This created a good buffer from the wetter and cooler weather that appeared at the back end of the season. Grapes were therefore picked pleasingly ripe and in great condition. Fermentation took place with 35% whole bunch inclusion and was then matured for 11 months in French oak of which 35% was new.
Deep dark red colour with black tinged edges and a dark red hue. Showing terrific intensity, perfumed violet like scents lead the way morphing into red to dark cherry, red plum, strawberry and subtle anise. Subtle notes of vanillin cedar, forest floor and spicy fresh herbs then follow on. Rich dark cherry, plum and strawberry fruits are both caressing in their feel and also seductive. Bright fresh acidity and stern yet polished tannins play their roll to provide a great framework. Superb power wave and structure with complexing elements of graphite, smoked meats, earthy black olives, forest floor and spice lying underneath. Long yet tightly knit finish.
    Cellar 6-8 years.

Aromas of red cherries, cedar, dry brown spices, forest berries and wood, as well as rose-like perfume. It opens and aromatically enriches with some air. The palate has all the trademark layering of smooth tannins and a smoothly ripe ball of fresh red cherries. Assertive drive to the finish. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

There’s so much to this wine. It is a pinot that really speaks of quality tannin, fresh and quite concentrated fruit flavors and a layered, succulent, fleshy and rich, dark-cherry finish. One of the best value wines on the planet, hands down! Drink now. Screw cap.
