Why buy Burgundy? “Because it's capable of creating wines of unmatched transparency of place that deliver wonderful elegance and refinement. And when the producer gets it just right, it offers a complex and emotional drinking experience that no other grape variety can match.” So says Allen Meadows of Burghound.com, and anyone who's tried truly good Burgundy would likely agree. Classic ruby color. Bright and fresh aromas of red pinot fruit are liberally laced with plenty of floral and spice wisps. The delicious, rich and seductively textured medium-bodied flavors possess an opulent mid-palate that contrasts somewhat with the firm, clean, dry, youthfully austere and mildly warm finale. Drink: 2030+.

The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes is perfumed and elegant, soaring from the glass with scents of roses, peonies, orange rind and sweet red berries. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and sensual, with melting tannins, succulent acids and a saline finish, it's one of the most ethereal wines in the range.

The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Charmes 1er Cru has a ripe nose with raspberry, cranberry and quite conspicuous rose petal scents. The palate is medium-bodied with sweet, ripe tannins, the new oak a little more present here, smooth towards the finish that just needs a little more Chambolle DNA. Drink: 2024-2038.

A slightly less intense but pretty purple, some whole bunches here. They also stretch out the fruit across the palate beautifully. This is a very deft Chambolle with plenty of nuance, extremely floral, and with a graceful structure.

Very deep dark red black tinged colour with a dark red hue. Lifted black cherry and anise aromas overlay scorched earth, black olive and spicy cedar notes. Rich, concentrated flavours of black cherry, dark plum and anise are underscored by bright acidity with some scorched earth, dried herb and spicy cedar elements lingering in the background. Sturdy yet fine grained tannin structure. Solid power with a ripe yet sculptured finish.

The 2020 Volnay Les Mitans 1er Cru has a generous bouquet with red cherries, blackcurrant and violet aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, quite spicy with white pepper and clove notes towards the finish. Very fine, but it needs time. Drink 2026-2042.

From the Ormeau part of Mitans. Very dark colour. Ripe fruit with a sundried element, quite dark fruit for Volnay, but the tannins are ripe and the acidity is lower. Medium density and persistence.

Semi translucent dark red colour with black shaded edges and a bright red hue. Pretty aromas of violets, red and sour cherries, winter strawberries and clove unfurl from the glass with hints of stalk and spice also evident. Light in body, elegant sour to red cherry fruits overlay earth, dried herbs and spice. 2021 Caroline Morey Beaune Les Greves Rouge Premier Cru
    Burgundy, FRANCE
    $250. 00
    Bottle
    $3000.00 Dozen
    ABV: 13.5%

Caroline Morey comes from a long line of vignerons based in the Cotes de Beaune and is also married to Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey. In 2014 Caroline took her share of some family vineyards from her father Jean-Marc and created her own domaine based in Chassagne-Montrachet, working out of brand new cellars built for Caroline and her husband.

For her first vintage in 2014 she had small holdings in Chassagne-Montrachet for both red and white together with small holdings in Santenay and Hautes Cotes de Beaune totaling just 2.4 hectares. With more vineyards added both from family and acquisitions in the last few years, the total is now 7 hectares in total for Caroline with roughly half for red and half for whites.

    Other Reviews....
An admirably pure, cool and pretty nose is also quite floral with its spicy aromas of lilac, violet and rose petal adding elegance to the blend of both red and dark pinot fruit. There is very good delineation and underlying tension to the lighter weight flavors that terminate in a lightly austere and stony finale. This too could use better depth but despite the light weight flavors, more should reasonably develop before full maturity. Drink through 2027+.

The 2021 Beaune Grèves 1er Cru (Rouge), which contains 50% whole bunches like the Chassagne Champ Gain, has a well-defined bouquet with red plum, raspberry and light loamy scents. The palate is medium-bodied with quite a peppery opening, the stems rather conspicuous at the moment and perhaps just dominating the finish, though they will assimilate by the time of bottling. An unusually perfumed and exceptionally pretty nose freely reveals its aromas of the essence of various red berries, pepper and an appealing variety of floral elements. There is more volume and richness still to the vibrant and attractively textured flavors that are also largely built on their fruit, which should permit this delicious effort to be enjoyed on the younger side. The 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet is a blend of three vineyards. It has a little more concentration on the nose compared to the two Santenays with raspberry and wild strawberry to the fore. Fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannins, fresh and chalky, lively with a brittle, you could almost say "bony" finish that is full of tension and freshness. Drink 2024-2031.

Charles Van Canneyt is the current winemaker at the iconic Domaine Hudelot-Noellat in Vougeot, but he also produces wine under his own label. Using his extensive contacts with the finest growers in Burgundy, Charles sources grapes from some of the top plots in the area, and makes the wines at a separate facility in Beaune. Charles is aiming for a similar purity and terroir focus as those wines of Hudelot-Noellat, and as such has minimal use of new oak each year.

Les Feusselottes is situated just below the village, surrounding the cemetery, and has perhaps the deepest and richest soils of the Chambolle Premier Cru sites. This shallow, stony soil has a high proportion of limestone, which has long been considered the cause of the mineral characters in the finished wines.

Les Lavrottes is a tiny Premier Cru vineyard just south of Bonnes Mares and is the continuation of the larger Les Noirots site. Chambolle-Musigny as a whole has lighter limestone soils than in the Morey-Saint-Denis appellation to the north, with a much lower proportion of clay. This light, pebbly soil covers the Les Lavrottes vineyard, with hard limestone subsoil beneath. Lighter soils such as this one are often associated with lighter wines. However, a little clay and iron in the soils here gives a little more weight than might usually be expected from Chambolle-Musigny.

Located between the Premier Cru vineyards of Aux Combottes and Aux Beaux Bruns, roughly one third of this vineyard is classified as Premier Cru and has been owned by Domaine Leymarie-Ceci since 1976. That domaine does not bottle much itself, and this plot is more widely seen in negociant bottlings such as this from Charles Van Canneyt.

The 2021 Maranges La Fussières 1er Cru Rouge was very complex to pick, the 5.5-hectares with ten different types of ripening depending on vine age and terroirs. It has a very mineral-driven bouquet, beautifully defined with more black fruit than the Clos de la Boutière. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp red fruit, a little leafy in style and sapid with a slightly peppery finish that might fool you into thinking there were stems in the blend (when in fact, they were too green to include this year). An earthier and more somber nose reluctantly displays its aromas of purple fruit, especially plum. There is more volume to the rich, velvety and solidly concentrated flavors that are more powerful and less refined on the solidly persistent and slightly firmer finale. This is also worth considering. Drink through 20272+.

Cropped at a measly 18hl/ha, the 2021 Maranges Clos de la Boutière 1er Cru has an attractive bouquet with vibrant dark cherry, crushed strawberry and light vanillary scents. The palate is medium-bodied with quite "thick" tannins that lend this real weight and density; a burly Maranges in a positive sense, even if it does miss a bit of nuance on the finish. Cellar it for a couple of years. Drink 2025-2040.

A good half crop made. The most concentrated of the reds in colour and in nose. A fine generosity of fruit. This is certainly good and almost qualifies as exciting! A touch of orange zest in with the fresh red fruit. Excellent energy. Drink from 2025-2030.

Benoit is the 4th generation of Chevallier vignerons in Vosne-Romanée, and from 2018 has taken over production of the domaine. One of the rare and exciting new names in Burgundy that are working their estate owned vines, Benoit has hit the ground running in very short time. His wines are bright, energetic, and concentrated and show wonderful structure.

Organic viticulture is practiced in each of the plots, and from there the grapes are treated with utmost care. After sorting in the vineyard, all bunches are destemmed gently to preserve full berries, and vinification takes place in cement and wooden vats, with macerations lasting two to three weeks with gentle pump-overs and occasional punch-downs. The village wines are aged 12-14 months and the rest for about 18 months in new to three–year-old oak, depending on the cuvee and vintage.

Domaine Bouchard Père et Fils is one of the most respected names in Burgundy, yet despite their renown, it seems the market has not yet fully appreciated just how good the wines currently being produced are. However, 2020 vintage will only add to their impressive recent track record, another year where they found success in both red and whites. And as the largest owner of Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards in Burgundy, this includes prized plots such as Montrachet, Chevalier Montrachet, Chambertin, Bonnes Mares, and Meursault Perrieres.

Founded in 1731, the subsequent nine generations of the Bouchard family has amassed an impressive 130ha of vineyards, including nearly 100 separate climats. It's perhaps this large size, contrasting the current trend for tiny producers with a cult following that has meant Bouchard are not front and centre in the minds of many Burgundy drinkers. A true shame as Bouchard are making some of the best wines in their history.

This one of the more floral-suffused wines in the range with its hints of violet, rose petal and lavender that add touch of elegance to the very ripe poached plum scents that presently lack a bit of freshness. There is verve and freshness on the palate of the dense, voluminous and punchy flavors that coat the palate with dry extract that also serves to buffer the firm tannins shaping the powerful, serious and mildly warm finale. Note that my predicted range offers the benefit of the doubt that the nose will recover better freshness. Drink from 2032+.

The 2020 Beaune Les Grèves Vigne de L'Enfant Jesus 1er Cru has a lovely, sensual red berry, rose petal and mulberry scented nose that has fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, a little more tension than the Les Tuerons with a saline finish. This is a well crafted Beaune. Drink 2025-2040.

Still pretty closed, this is a concentrated and seriously structured wine for a Beaune 1er Cru, which has clearly been built for the long-term. However, its the pronounced, stony minerality that makes this exciting. Bold and still quite tight finish. From a 3.92-hectare plot in one of Beaune's top sites. From organically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but best from 2024.

This is a free draining soil, but deep enough that it did not dry out during the parched summer. Dark purple black, one of the more sunshine laden bouquets but with a joyous plump fruit on the palate refreshed at the back by a little useful acidity. Good length, no undue heat.

Bouchard has nearly four hectares of this, perhaps the greatest site in the Beaune appellation. On a modest slope with east-southeast exposure in the heart of the terroir, this has produced a sophisticated, elegant wine in 2020, fermenting out to barely 13.5% alcohol with a pH between 3.5–3.6. The fruit is supremely luxurious and lush, yet underscored with plenty of nuance of spice, smoke, earth, and leather. The texture is dense and powerful yet superbly elegant — a triumph. If the Cuvée Carnot tends to take center stage chez Bouchard, it's the 2020 Volnay 1er Cru Les Taillepieds that's the Volnay to beat to my palate this year. Exhibiting aromas of cherries, raspberries, loamy soil, black truffle and raw cocoa, it's medium to full-bodied, concentrated and elegantly muscular, with terrific depth and mid-palate amplitude, concluding with a long, mineral finish.

Cropped at a derisory 15 hectoliters per hectare, the quality of Bouchard's 2020 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets Ancienne Cuvée Carnot is some compensation for the lack of quantity. Upfront floral and licorice aromas, but it needs some aeration for the red berries to emerge. A rich and fleshy wine for this appellation that’s associated with silky elegance. The 2020 Le Corton Grand Cru is a worthy successor to the striking 2019 (which I probably underrated last year). Soaring from the glass with aromas of rose petals, orange rind, raspberries, rich soil tones and cinnamon, it's full-bodied, velvety and seamless, with a deep and layered core of fruit, vibrant acids and fine, melting tannins, concluding with a long, saline finish. This emblematic cuvée has always been a solid bottling chez Bouchard, but in the last few years it seems to have attained a whole new level of quality. When I asked Frédéric Weber what might account for this shift, he explained that he picks later and includes more whole bunches in the vinification. Whatever the reason, readers are advised to take note, as I don't think the market has yet factored in quite how good this wine is.

There's nothing shy about this uncompromising expression of the 2020 vintage. Dark, meaty and peppery on the expansive nose, this Corton has imposing structure, but has been beautifully crafted. So well proportioned, in spite of its mighty stature. The crushed-stone minerality builds and builds to a serious crescendo at the finish. From organically grown grapes. The Bouchard 2020 Corton has coped well with the drought. Vinification included 40% whole bunches, slightly higher than the other Côte de Beaune vineyards. Deepish colour with a more crimson edge. The stems show with a slightly smoky nose. A brooding powerhouse but it is also light on its feet with an interesting complex mix of red and black fruit, plus the more open structure from whole bunch.

This magnificent parcel is 3.55ha in a long strip below the wood of Corton and above Clos du Roi and Renards, right on the limestone. The grapes are one-third fermented as whole clusters and then aged in 25% new casks to produce a very aromatic nose with expressive red and black fruits, floral notes, pepper and spice. On the palate the wine is tightly wound, with firm tannins but lots of finesse and a fine acidity that carries this to an impressive finish. Drink 2025 - 2050.

The 2020 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru comes from purchased grapes that Bouchard harvest themselves. It has a fresh black cherry and boysenberry jam scented bouquet, just a touch of warm alcohol here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, quite dense and lightly spiced. Deep, dark and smoky nose that's still quite closed. Gigantic structure and fantastic cherry fruit on the rich and deeply harmonious palate. Still very youthful, but this gives you the full Gevrey Grand Cru experience, with all the earthy power, spicy complexity and a touch of bitter chocolate. Expansive and creamy finish with very impressive, plush tannins. This was made from bought-in grapes from an almost 1-hectare plot in this cult site. Drink or hold.

Purchased grapes, but from the same plot each year and Bouchard can choose when to harvest, which was 29th August in 2020. Dark colour, 30% whole bunch, a suave intensity of fruit, very backward, not overdone, with a little coconut sweetness alongside the dark raspberry. It is a little too massive to display its quintessential elegance yet, but I think that lies beneath and will come out after racking. There may yet be more of an up-side to my conservative score.

Produced with fruit purchased from the same parcel each year, which is located at the top of the slope just under the tree line. In 2020, the grapes were picked on 29th August and were treated to the customary vinification: half whole clusters, very gentle pump-overs, and ultimately two winters in cask, half new. The result is lighter than this producer's Chambertin, with a bright raspberry and red cherry fruit aromas tinged with floral notes. There is plenty of finesse, although it is lacking perhaps a bit of the density one expects in this appellation. Drink 2025 - 2050.

The 2018 Volnay Les Caillerets "Ancienne Cuvée Carnot" 1er Cru comes from Bouchard’s 3.7-hectare monopole. The slope in this part of Beaune is considered the best terroir in the commune, despite the lack of Grand Cru status. In Les Greves, a gentle, southeasterly exposure gives the vines plentiful sunshine during the day, which helps with the development of sugar and phenols in the grapes. This is tempered by cooler evenings, which slow this ripening process and leads to a retention of acidity, making for balanced wines. These wines are among the most respected made in Beaune, rivaled only by the wines made in the tiny neighboring Premier Cru vineyard, Sur les Greves.

Beautifully supple and silky with aromas of crushed stones, strawberries, cherries, nutmeg and redbush tea. Stony, fine tannins here, with a medium body and a cool minerality throughout. From organically grown grapes. Delicious already, but even better from 2024.

Les Longeroies is a relatively large vineyard located in the north of the Marsannay sector on the border with Chenove. The upper part of the vineyard has large amounts of limestone just below the surface, while the lower section has more red marl. Les Longeroies is one of the prime candidates to be promoted to premier cru status, and the wines from here are incredibly refined, yet also serious and well structured.

Clos du Roy is the northern most lieu-dit of Marsannay, and the relatively steep south-east facing vineyard sits above the town of Chenove. Soils here are light red with an element of sand, sitting atop a bedrock of hard limestone. Wines from Clos du Roy can be more elegant, aromatic, and approachable.

What a fragrant and spicy nose, showing peppercorns, slate, chili chocolate, hazelnuts and bramble berry fruit. Incredible balance of both fruit and minerals, concentrated, with a medium body and creamy tannin frame. Long and somehow increasing in flavor. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

I like the savory olive notes here, with peppercorns and salted almonds amongst the red berry fruit. Some nutmeg. Creamy and layered on the palate, with a medium body and silky yet very present tannins. Powerful fruit, with a deep savory and salty element. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

An incredibly moreish Rose that’s impossible to resist.

Brilliant salmon pink colour with delightful scents of red cherry, peach and raspberry streaming out of the glass. Hints of rose petals, musk and wet stone adding further interest. Uber delicious, the moreish palate features raspberry, peach and pomegranate fruits which are delivered with fantastic intensity. Gorgeous supple textural feel with subtle musk, wet stone and mineral elements also chiming in. Superb drive finishing dry and fresh with a long, silky, stony mineral laden conclusion.

This youthful rosé Burgundy has stacks of nectarine and peach with just a touch of fresh cranberry aroma. Medium-bodied and properly dry it has spot-on balance of fruit and lively acidity with a touch of spice at the very straight finish. Made from all this producer’s young vineyards. Makes you wonder why other producers don’t do the same! Drink now.

Deep dark red black colour with a dark red hue. Very expressive nose with aromas of dark to black cherries, violets, dried clove and hints of anise blooming out of the glass. Some forest floor and spicy cedar notes also chime in. Rich dark to black cherry and wild strawberry fruits power across the palate with some anise, clove, forest floor and spicy cedar elements lying underneath. Slightly grainy in its feel with relatively polished tannins for Pommard. Concludes long, deeply fruited and expansive.

Plenty of fresh plum, black cherry and a touch of blood orange on the nose of this very satisfying Pommard. Stacks of healthy tannins are already beautifully integrated in the fullish body. In spite of the considerable power, this has a remarkably elegant finish for this appellation. Drink or hold.

Once again there is a coolness to the markedly restrained aromas of airy red and dark pinot fruit, pungent earth and smoke. The middle weight flavors are not as dense or voluminous, but they are definitely stonier and particularly so on the linear and borderline strict finish. This youthfully austere effort is a bit awkward today, but it appears to have the stuffing to fill out in time and my projected range confers the benefit of the doubt in this regard. Drink to 2028+.

Marsannay has long had a reputation for fine rosé production, yet since the upgrade to appellation status in 1987 and the shift in focus to white and red wines from the commune, rosé output has dropped significantly. Thankfully Cyril Audoin is one of the few that has kept up this tradition, and his is one of leading examples on the market today.
Made from Pinot Noir grapes this a light, energetic Rose with plenty of mineral zing. Brilliant salmon colour with a watery hue. Blossoming from the glass is a mix of strawberry and peach fruits followed by some pomegranate, light musk and stony mineral notes. Tangy citrus, grapefruit and strawberry fruits overlay a cranberry and stony mineral infused back drop. Finishes dry and zesty with crisp acidity and a refreshing aftertaste.

Very ripe, but also very fresh red-cherry nose. Bold and generous, as you expect from Pommard, but with gentle tannins on the medium-to full-bodied palate. Only at the finish do they show a hint of the dryness for which the appellation is renowned, but the texture remains wonderfully velvety.

The 2019 Pommard En Mareau is very promising, wafting from the glass with notes of red berries, plums, dried herbs, spices and raw cocoa. Medium to full-bodied, bright and supple, with melting tannins and a lively core of fruit, much like Audoin's Fixin, this is a cuvée that has been more and more elegantly rendered in recent vintages.

Like the Fixin, this too is aromatically quite cool and restrained with its reticent aromas of herbal tea, red pinot fruit and discreet newly turned earth scents. The relatively suave and rounded medium weight flavors possess a lovely mouthfeel, all wrapped in a saline-inflected and youthfully austere finale. This too is quite good for its level and worth checking out. Drink 2026+.

A really sophisticated wine for this appellation, which is often associated with robust and rustic wines. Full forest berries, generous body and fine tannins, with plenty of wet-earth minerality that drives the very long, velvety finish.

Aromas of raspberries, cassis, rose petals and coniferous forest floor introduce the 2019 Fixin Le Rozier, a medium to full-bodied, bright and perfumed wine that's fine-boned and mineral, with elegantly chalky tannins and tangy acids. It's a lovely example of the appellation.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)

A cooler and more elegant nose offers up notes of earth and herbal tea on the red cherry, raspberry and soft sauvage nuances. There is very solid volume to the well-defined medium weight flavors that are notably more mineral-driven on the mildly chalky, austere and nicely long finish that is actually fairly refined. La Charme aux Pretres is situated in middle of the Marsannay sector, and soils here are a reddish brown gravel over a bed of limestone. This high limestone content tends to produce an open knit wine with great structure and impressive ageing potential.

The 2019 Marsannay La Charme aux Prêtres is showing beautifully, exhibiting pretty aromas of cherries, red berries, orange rind, plums and raw cocoa. Medium to full-bodied, layered and lively, it's velvety and fine-boned, with a vibrant core of fruit and a long, saline finish.

This actually pretty closely resembles the nose of the Longeroies though there is more volume if less refinement to the slightly broader and richer flavors that possess a generous mouthfeel and lovely vibrancy though not the same class on the finish that fans out as it sits on the palate. A dizzying patchwork of terroirs.

The spiritual home of Pinot Noir & Chardonnay consists of 100 different appellations, myriad individual vineyards and over 3,000 producers. There are several sub-regions: To the north, Chablis (which has its own classification system); the Côte d'Or, encompassing the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune; and further south, the Chalonnais and Mâconnais in the Saone-et-Loire.

In contrast to the "Old Money" feel and prestige of Bordeaux, Burgundy central remains largely grounded in rusticity. Unlike Bordeaux, vineyards can be split between many owners, with some tending no more than one or two rows of vines. While such grower/producers may seem like ‘peasant farmers’, appearances belie the affluence of many: When demand for Burgundy began to sky rocket in the 1970s, so did the prices of many of its finest wines.

Burgundy's appellation pyramid.

Moreso than any other French wine region, Burgundy's viticulturists do not consider vineyards as homogenous places and experts and Burg-hounds alike get tangled up in the complicated web of classifications. The influence of terroir reaches its zenith with “climats” within specific sites. These are precisely delineated plots that benefit from special geological and climatic conditions, producing consistently outstanding wines.

At the top of the pyramid are the 33 sites classified Grand Cru - a designation reserved for only about 2 percent of all vineyards in Burgundy. Romanée Conti, La Tâche, Grands-Echézeaux, Montrachet: these are the big guns that command staggering prices and are prized by collectors and fanatics as the Holy Grail of the wine world. They are typically the most powerful, complex and long lived expressions, showcasing the unique characteristics of the most exceptional plots. Their labels reference single sites such as Corton, Montrachet, Romanée Saint-Vivant or Clos de Tart.

One step down are the Premier Cru vineyards - specific plots within the Village appellations. Still considered to be of outstanding quality and comprising roughly 12 percent of plantings, these are labelled with the suffix “1er Cru”, as in "Vosne Romanée 1er Cru" and are the best terroirs or climats within a village vineyard. Lieux-dits are also plots recognised for their own topographic or historical specificities.

Next come the Village wines, taking their names from the 44 communes where the grapes are grown. Their source is indicated on the labels, such as “Savigny-Les-Beaune”, Santenay,” “Givry,” “Pommard” or “Mercurey". Representing approximately 37 percent of Burgundy's vineyards, their occasional proximity to more prestigious sites means you can discover bang for your buck in this classification. They promise flavoursome wines for mid term cellaring.

Finally, Regional wines equate to entry level Burgundy: Labelled simply as “Bourgogne”, they're created from a combination of vineyards and / or from a variety of villages and represent half of Burgundy's production. Typically fresh, light, and lively, these are easy-drinking wines for early consumption.

Buy Burgundy online.

Négociants have traditionally been the cornerstone of Burgundy, buying up fruit from small growers and assembling wines to be sold under their own labels. More recently, the demand for Domaine-bottled Burgundy from one grower-winemaker has also emerged. These are wines made by a vine-grower who also happens to be a competent-to-great winemaker. However, it should be noted that negociants may also own their own vineyard sites. Whatever you choose, when it comes to buying Burgundy, the truism that price is an unreliable guide holds.
