Grenache

Grenache in Australia has been championed by a wave of interest in wines from the Southern Rhone where it's traditionally blended with Shiraz & Mourvedre (amongst others). Grenache's soft tannins and fruit-forward style make for delicious, affordable, early drinking reds with aromas and flavours of pomegranate, wild berries and red fruits. Age-worthy expressions from older, low yielding vines produce hedonistic, liqueur-like wines with remarkable concentration. Look for outstanding examples from the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale, Priorat (Spain) and Chateauneuf du Pape (Southern France). Browse our top rated Grenache wines here.

A very good wine, yet the choice of oak detracts from a top-drawer positioning. Fine fruit, fidelitous to variety and place: kirsch, lilac, thyme and mint, ethereal and pixelated, as is the regional wont. Yet then come the tannins, too drying to let the beauty within glide. Almost there. Drink by 2029.

Moppa-sourced grenache from a 1900-planted vineyard. Some whole bunches, matured for 14 months in seasoned French oak hogsheads. Notes of raspberry, red plum, tobacco, gingerbread, grilled watermelon, cola and almond blossom. Calm, composed and savoury with a lovely fruit presence, briny, lipsmacking acid drive and a supple, kinetic structure that bodes well for the future. Western Barossa grenache on the charge. Grenache, or Garnacha when it hails from its home in Spain, has finally elevated itself from workhorse to superstar. This one is from the northeast provinces in Spain and we are told has been blended with some other Iberian varietals. Who doesn’t enjoy a mystery! Deep maroon in colour. Big and bold and oozing flavour, we have notes of black cherries, spices, dry herbs, blackberries, deep fruit aromas, chocolate and coffee grinds plus a hint of aniseed and some plummy touches. This is a little darker in fruit and flavours than many Grenache/Garnacha. Supple and sleek, there is quite bright acidity here, nice length and fine tannins. Delicious now and should remain so for the next four to six years. Great food style. Drink 2022-2028.

Clarendon Hills Romas Grenache is a unique single vineyard wine sourced from the steepest and rockiest section of the Blewitt Springs Grenache vineyard. The gnarly old vines, planted in the 1940s, produce very small yields with exceptional acidity, akin to that found in white wines. Romas stands out due to the density of rocks and soil in this specific part of the vineyard, making it distinct from other sections and serving as Clarendon Hills' flagship Grenache expression. The abundance of ironstone, quartz, and shale rocks in the soil contributes to the wine's limited production, and the final product reflects these distinctive mineral elements.

    Other Reviews....
The 2021 Romas Grenache is spicy and full—fuller than I would have expected given the cooler season that was 2021 (as compared to the previous, much hotter 2020). This is inky, savory and intense, with musk sticks, raspberry cordial, roasted meat juice and plum skin. It is very ripe and plush, with enveloping tannins, and somehow the oak feels round and toasty here. It is earth driven but shaped by oak rather than soil. This is a lovely wine, a big wine! 14.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2023 - 2036.

This is from a specific patch of 1940’s plantings, on the ‘steepest and rockiest section’ of their Blewitt Springs vineyard. And, I have to say, it marches to the beat of its own drum, when compared to other old vine Grenache offerings from this part of the world. No problem with that, just duly noted. It’s immense.
Black fruit, cherry liqueur, malt and clove, a whole lot of mocha and spice, ginger biscuits, dried roses, pan juices, orange peel – the whole shooting match. It’s thick and concentrated, intense liquroice and liqueur-like flavour, lavish stony tannin, pomegranate acidity, coffee bean, and freeze dried raspberry, a little warmth, maybe, but enveloped in so much flesh and flavour, so much so that it’s kind of a black hole of old vine Grenache. The finish is long and powerful. Quite something. Drink 2026 - 2035+

This 2020 Onkaparinga Grenache is the seductive Grenache in the pack. What a wine. It doesn’t have the fine skeleton of the Blewitt Springs wine, but it is more silken and supple. Incredible. The tannic framework is disguised amid the voluminous (but controlled, harnessed, not opulent) fruit. The odious comparison to Burgundy here is hard to avoid—the Clarendon Hills Grenache wines are built on a framework of fine tannins, and the fruit has a natural appeal and attraction. They're seductive in the extreme. High-altitude Blewitt Springs. Drink 2022-2037.

From a west facing high altitude site in Blewitt Springs, planted in the 1940s. Raised in one to five year old French oak. Loving this fresher style from Clarendon Hills. Exotic perfume of dried roses, musk and spice, raspberry and blueberry. It’s medium to full-bodied, superb stony tannin bedded through supple and fragrant mixed berries, blood orange tang, and a nutty and ‘mineral’ finish of outstanding length. Texture, intensity, and its distinct character mark it out as a special wine. Drink 2023-2032.

The 2020 Blewitt Springs Grenache is perfumed, spicy, attractive... incredible. It’s long and plush, but the skeleton of tannins shows the longevity and precision of the style. There are notes of clove bud, raspberry pip, licorice, silty tannin and loads of exotic spice. And very fine saline acidity. Robert Parkers Review:
The top Grenache cuvee (essentially a selection of the finest fruit from the Blewitt Springs vineyard) is the 2004 Grenache Old Vines Romas Vineyard. Cropped at 1/2 ton of fruit per acre, it boasts a deep ruby color, fabulous density, and a big, earthy bouquet of loamy soil, minerals, black raspberries, kirsch liqueur, flowers, and spice box. With great intensity as well as purity, and an expansive, savory mouthfeel, it is a fabulous offering to drink over the next 10-12 years.

The Romas Vineyard is the highest and steepest section of the Blewitt Springs Vineyard and also produces the lowest yields – between 0.5 and 1 tonne per acre. The vines are between 70-75 years old. The winemaking process is essentially the same as for the other Clarendon Hills Grenache wines, except that the barrel composition has changed. 80% of the casks are one year old whereas 20% are two year old French casks. The minor change in composition compensates for the exceptionally low yields but as with the previous Grenache wines, the purity of fruit flavour is superbly expressed.

Tasting Note: This wine is the ultimate expression of Grenache – and is comparable to the finest from any region, anywhere in the world. Totally opaque crimson, purple colour. The nose is superb with wonderfully concentrated aromas of blackberry, spice, blackpepper, violets and just a hint of earth. The palate takes the variety into a realm of its own; total concentrate. It’s hard to even imagine that the humble, often neglected Grenache grape which has for years been blended back with other varietals, can take on such dimensions of flavour. Exotic layers of berries are woven together with flavours of blackberry, blackpepper, spice and liquorice allsorts. The tannins are perfectly balanced and echo the aftertaste of raspberries, exotic plum, blackberries and pepper.
    Cellar 10-15 years (2012-2017).

The 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape is reminiscent of a slightly improved 2005 and has a fresh, classic style with beautiful concentration, notable freshness, first-rate tannin quality, and the classic spice and sweet red and black fruits this cuvee is known for. I suspect this beauty will close down relatively quickly after bottling and take 5-6 years to show at its best, but it will drink well for 15+ years.

This has a drop-dead gorgeous core of cassis and raspberry pâte de fruit flavors that holds center stage but still allows notes of Lapsang souchong tea, anise, incense and shiso leaf to chime in. Very long, with a sublime feel through the mineral-tinged finish. So seductive already, but this will cruise in the cellar. Drink now through 2040. 6,000 cases made.

(raised in foudres) Deep ruby. Hugely aromatic red and dark berry, potpourri and floral scents are underscored by smoky minerality and an exotic suggestion of Asian spices. Sappy, focused and impressively deep yet lively, offering alluringly sweet raspberry, cherry compote and spicecake flavors and a refreshingly bitter touch of blood orange. Puts on weight and spreads out steadily with air, acquiring a succulent herb note that carries through the strikingly long, mineral-laced, gently tannic finish. This beauty is shaping up to be among the standouts of this extremely successful vintage.

This is just awesome. I usually taste and write at the same time, but here with this wine, I tasted it and then tasted it again. I didn't write a thing initially—I was more focused on just taking it in. This 2021 The Grenache, McLaren Vale is fine-tuned: shavings of deli meat, layers of star anise, raspberry pip, rhubarb, blood and iodine, graphite and red apples. It is a concentrated wine of both gravitas and joy, too. There is something that has really got me hanging in on the finish—dates or nutmeg spice... or something spicy. It's intriguing. A wine of poise and focus. Tannins are a highlight. Drink 2022-2027.

It’s time to leave your preconceptions at the door, as Comando G produce Garnacha (Grenache) unlike anyone else in Spain. Comando G’s Daniel Landi and Fernando Garcia craft Garnacha up in the near inaccessible hills of the Sierra de Gredos mountains which are miles away (figuratively and literally) from the dark, powerful, brooding wines of Priorat that hit the scene 20 years or so ago. These are a different breed of Garnacha, light, ethereal, built on tension and finesse. There’s no lack of concentration however, and they have much more in common with high-end Burgundy than what you would normally associate with Spain. Word is well and truly out on these special wines, with demand far outstripping supply and prices skyrocketing on the secondary market.

The 2020 El Reventón is now a wine from Comando G and no longer a Dani Landi wine, whose personal project came to an end with the 2019 vintage. It's still exactly the same wine from the same vineyard in Cebreros on slate soils. It has a lot of cherry fruit, a liquorous part à la Rayas, with 15% alcohol. It's round and juicy but with no sense of heat, mixing notes of rose hip with the lavender, curry and chamomile but in a subtler way, less Mediterranean. It's fine-boned but super tasty with an almost salty/umami twist. 1,708 bottles and 50 magnums produced. It was bottled in March 2022. Drink 2023 - 2029.

A hint of bay leaves to the grapefruit zest, blood orange, subtle spices, stones, creamed raspberries and strawberries. I love the perfume, texture and fluidity here, highlighting tautness, tension and brightness. So juicy, svelte and firm on the palate with neat, chalky tannins and a focused but linear finish. Drink or hold.

The backward and serious character of the red 2020 El Tamboril Tinto shows the backward character of this place, a cool site with a longer cycle and later harvest, so it always attains more color. The wine has more stones, more bone than meat and chalky, talcum powder tannins from white soils that create wines with electricity and energy. This always has more Italian in character, with more Barolo tannins than Burgundy. It should develop nicely in bottle. 1,553 bottles and 50 magnums produced. It was bottled in May 2022. Drink 2023 - 2032.

This year, Tamboril has the deepest color among Comando G’s parcel wines, even if it is still just medium ruby with a subtle orangey rim. But it certainly is glossier. Of course, there is a lot going on here, with tangy red berries and a splash of black fruit, too. Mineral and spicy with a hint of menthol. This has a bold structure with very firm, minerally textured tannins on the palate followed by a long, tight finish. Drink or hold.

The 2021 La Bruja de Rozas is their edgiest and most austere mineral and soil-driven version of their entry-level red. It's herbal, with no concession for fruit, and it has electricity and grip. It's a good preview of what's to come from 2021. It has a lot of 2018 and 2016 characteristics, a cool summer, a year with rain and even some during harvest that complicated matters and made them lose some grapes, but there's more grip, more minerality, more depth, layers and subtleness. It needs time in the glass, and my guess is that at age eight it's going to reach an outstanding level. A grown-up Bruja, it’s more for soil fanatics than the general public, and it’s one to lay down in your cellar (by the case) while you drink your 2020s. Drink 2024 - 2030.

Domaine de la Janasse are one of the leading estates in Chateauneuf du Pape today, having been formed in the mid twentieth century by Aimé Sabon and named after the family farm “La Janasse” located in Courthézon. Over time Aimé has expanded their holdings from 15 hectares to now occupy 90 hectares of vines, including some of the finest parcels on the La Crau plateau. Today the domaine is run by siblings Isabelle and Christophe Sabon, each heavily involved in all aspects of production from vineyard to bottling.
Chaupin is a 100% Grenache cuvee with the vines planted as far back as 1912, each parcel planted on sandy soils. Grenache on sand produces wines with an elegant and refined character.

Dense black as night colour with a deep dark red hue. Wafting from the glass are intoxicating black raspberry, black cherry and liquorice scents which are intermeshed with Provincial herb, peppered meat, scorched earth and spice notes. Combining glorious richness and power with structure, flamboyant black raspberry, liquorice and black cherry liqueur flavours are framed by a robust tannin framework that lends a sinewy feel to the otherwise voluptuous palate. Out of this world intensity and a dense textural feel are counterpointed by good underlying freshness. Lingering through the exceptionally long, brooding and muscular finish are notions of herbs du Provence, dried meats, spice and peppered earth elements.

Marked by scents of garrigue, raspberries and black cherries, the 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape Chaupin is full-bodied, rich and tannic but also incredibly ripe and long. The betting here is that the fruit outlasts the tannins and that the wine develops similarly to the stunning 2005. Drink 2025-2040.

I was able to taste the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Chaupin on two occasions, rating it one point higher on one of those as well. Incredible notes of red and black fruits, violets, scorched earth, ground pepper, and Provençal garrigue notes define the nose, and it’s a darker, richer, slightly more powerful wine than usual, while still showing the inherent elegance and finesse this cuvée always shows. Give bottles 2-3 years and enjoy over the following 15-20. Don’t miss it! Drink 2023 - 2044.

Sweet, deeply concentrated and expansive, offering palate-coating blueberry, cherry compote and spicecake flavors and an intense floral pastille quality. An undeniable success in the vintage, and one of the top wines, the 2011 Chateauneuf du Pape Pure is a spectacular blend of almost all Grenache, all from sandy soils and 100+-year-old vines, that was aged all in an older foudre. Rayas-like with its perfumed kirsch, rose petal, dried spice and pepper aromas and flavors, this medium to full-bodied wine has beautiful mid-palate depth, a pure silk texture and building tannin on the finish. Incredibly rich in the vintage, it should age beautifully for 12-15 years or more. Drink 2014-2026.
These awesome wines are made by the young, yet incredibly talented, Julien Barrot. Now producing just two cuvees from his 32 acres of sandy soils, he first took over the winemaking in 2002 and has since produced one spectacular vintage after another (don’t miss his 2010s!). The winemaking here is very traditional with some stem inclusion and aging all in tank and very old foudre. The wines typically show rich, voluptuous, yet elegant profiles and are relatively accessible in their youth, yet also age gracefully.

The 2015 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée de Mon Aïeul is another gorgeous wine from this family estate. As always it comes from three Grenache parcels: la Serres, La Crau and La Guigasse (there are 2 hectares in each parcel). In both 2015 and 2016 this cuvée wasn’t destemmed and was brought up mostly in tank, with 15-20% in demi-muids. The 2016 spent a huge 45 days on skins before being pressed to barrel. This beauty offers the fine, finesse-driven style of the vintage, yet has full-bodied depth and richness as well as sensational notes of framboise, crushed flowers, licorice, Christmas fruitcake and spice. It’s in the top handful of wines in the vintage and will benefit from short-term cellaring and have 20+ years of overall longevity.

McLaren Vale Shiraz has been a regular feature of our Best in Show and Platinum selections in recent years (as it is again this year), but this distinctive GI to the south of the Adelaide Hills is also celebrated for its astonishing patrimony of old-vine Grenache. Our judges pounced on this Grenache from the excellent 2022 vintage (dryer in McLaren Vale than elsewhere). A translucent black-purple in colour, this wine has beautiful aromas of sweet, beguiling fruits (strawberry and cherry) without any sticky jamminess; instead those fruits have a fresh, almost perfumed sheen. The wine is dark, vigorous and lively, despite its relatively low acidity; deftly extracted tannins and the innate vigour and tenacity of the fruits deliver that freshness. Fine raw materials and the best of contemporary Australian winemaking come together here.

After almost three decades of shared experience in the wine industry, Bernice Ong and Julian Forwood decided to have a crack at their own venture sourcing fruit mainly from high quality vineyards in McLaren Vale to produce wines under their Ministry of Clouds label.
This stellar example of Grenache is comprised 8 different Grenache ferments with varying amounts of whole bunch ranging from a couple of whole berry ferments to the highest being 28% whole bunch, skin time varying between 3 to 6 weeks. The 8 ferments are off four vineyards - three of which all neighbour each other in Blewitt Springs. One planted in 1930, another in 1939 and the last is believed to be planted in 1940s. These 3 vineyards make up 82% of the blend. The last component is from the oldest part of the Smart vineyard in Clarendon planted in 1920. Maturation took place in large old oak for 6 months.

A Grenache of phenomenal intensity and power.

Vibrant dark red coloured core with black shaded edges and a light purple red hue. Wafting from the glass with a perfumed like intensity are intoxicating aromas of dark raspberries, ripe cherries and red liquorice that are infused with an intriguing mix of fresh herbs and rose petals. Subtle vanillin earth and spice notes are also evident. Carrying only light to medium body, the palate has a power without weight quality, juicy dark raspberry, red liquorice and red cherry fruits unfolding like a never ending peacocks tail to deliver superb depth. Magnificent purity of fruit and with its concentration on another level. Lingering underneath are some vanillin confectionary, earth and subtle spicy pepper characters. Fresh acidity and a sturdy matrix of tannins provide a fine boned structure. Concludes with an explosively long, succulently fruited finish.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.

The second release of the MMAD Vineyard label, and off its 1939-planted Blewitt Springs vineyard. About 15% whole bunches, fermented in wood and steel, maturation in concrete and large old French oak. Unlike the 2022 shiraz, this takes time to emerge from the glass. It’s all there, though. There’s a brooding quality at present, with nori, iodine and ferrous notes filtering up through dark red cherry, plum, raspberry and sultry florals. Some spicy, musky characters emerge with air. Tannin is a meaningful factor, a pleasingly natural grape-derived affair, rugged but never rustic. A seriously compelling wine, and further proof of how thrilling McLaren Vale grenache is right now, for both its quality and the unparalleled diversity in top-flight expressions. Drink 2024 - 2034.

A sumptuously perfumed grenache with no shortage of structural exactitude and the tension that comes with it. Lilacs, tapenade, raspberry coulis, freshly picked strawberries and anise. Dried lavender and rosemary are bound to the tannic latticework. Salty and nourishing, with the warmth of umami across the long finish. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

This is ballistically good. I doubt that I’ll taste anything much better from these shores over the next 12 months. The first thing you notice is the plushness, which is always welcome, but it’s the the finish that takes things to eleven. Wow, really, this wine has a show-stopping finish on it. It’s blessed with red and blue berry flavours, cedarwood, roasted spice and earth, but itemising the flavours of this wine kind of misses the point. It’s like focussing on the colour of a tidal wave. The complete and utter command of the final flourish of flavour and tannin here feels, as you swallow, like a high water mark. I’m sold, totally sold, on this wine. Drink 2024 - 2038.

Deep dark red core with black shaded edges and a bright red to dark red hue. Spicy dark raspberry and liquorice aromas jump out of the glass followed by some scorched earth, subtle vanillin confectionary and pepper notes. Rich succulent dark raspberry, liquorice and dark cherry fruits flood the mid weighted palate with scorched earth and vanillin confectionary elements lying underneath. Deep dark red core with black shaded edges and a vibrant purple red hue. Sailing out of the glass are alluring red to dark raspberry, red liquorice and spicy cherry aromas which are married to earthy graphite, Mediterranean herb and pepper notes. Intense in its flavour yet relatively light on its feet the palate is awash with succulent red to dark raspberry, cherry and red liquorice fruits. Notions of crushed rock, infusions of fresh herbs and pepper lie underneath. Superb power with a muscular tannin structure and energetic acidity imparting some grip and crunch into the long juicy red fruited finish.

A 1960s planting on sand in Blewitt Springs. Lilac, juniper, orange peel, cranberry and that inimitable scent of sour cherry liqueur that often marks grenache from these parts. Lifted purple florals. Broad of spread and jittery of energy. Wonderful transparency, juxtaposed against a Mediterranean sweetness of fruit. A newly purchased old French vat is the magician's hat. Just a bit green, attesting to the whole clusters (20%) in the ferment. A little time will allow it to gel. Scored on the side of optimism. Drink by 2030.

Marmont Vineyard, planted 1960, using an old 2600L vat purchased from Tyrrells.
Dark raspberry, blue fruits, aniseed, plenty of sweet exotic spice, a dusting of cocoa, rosehip. It’s concentrated, rippling with shale-like tannin, juicy raspberry, cranberry crunch to acidity, and a long fresh finish, with plenty of tannin cleaning things up. Terrific wine. Drink 2024-2035.

A fragrant mix of dark raspberry, red liquorice and dark cherry scents emanates from the glass followed by scorched earth, incense and peppered herb notes. Medium bodied the palate features juicy dark raspberry and cherry fruits over a back drop of red liquorice, infusions of incense, herbs du Provence and peppered earth. The 2022 Grenache hails from McLaren Vale, bush-vine fruit that was handpicked and made with whole bunches and a wild ferment. It is spacious and spiny on the nose with loads of orange oil tannins and bright, apple and red raspberry fruit in the mouth. The tannins exert a firm style over the fruit, but the fruit rises up to meet it. So, all things considered, this is a balanced and juicy wine, with notes of beeswax, chinotto, sarsaparilla, juniper berries and cherry skin, etc. Good! 14.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2023-2032.

A very versatile variety.

In Australia Grenache has been widely planted, largely due to an early heritage of fortified wine production. In fact, by 1956 it was the most planted red variety in the country. It's been the foundation vine of regions such as the Barossa Valley, where it gradually lost favour to Shiraz. The soft tannins and plush, juicy palate of Grenache make it a pairing favourite for spicy food, as well as richer fare like stewed meats and mushroom risotto. At the opposite extreme, the best known and probably the oldest Rose in the world is that made at Tavel in southern France in which Grenache predominates. In Spain, where it's known as "Garnacha", there are huge plantings. Here it's often employed in the wines of Rioja, playing second fiddle to Tempranillo, as well as more intense varietal expressions from the slopes of Priorat.

Who makes the world's best Grenache?

The best Australian Grenache comes from older vines growing in the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale. Spain offers a more recent star, Priorat, while the greatest examples from Southern France's Rhone Valley take the varietal to another level. Here Grenache remains the basis for beautifully balanced, frequently exuberant reds with a strong Mediterranean influence. Look out for examples from Chateau Beaucastel, Domaine du Pegau and Tardieu Laurent to name a few.
