This is good, defined by a splay of ripe grape tannins melding effortlessly with a band of oak (17 months, all Burgundian, 20% new), gentle bottle age and the reductive stamp of the house, imparting tension and, in this instance, not too much of the iodine note. Old-vine punch. Mottled blue and black berries, Seville orange, some spice and soaring Blewitt Springs violets. Plush, but taut. Measured, but generous. Very good warm-climate shiraz, as far as warm-climate shiraz goes.

From 55yo estate vines; fermented and matured 17 months in new and used French oak. The bouquet has the inimitable McLaren Vale fusion of plum and dark chocolate, the palate wonderfully light on its feet thanks to controlled alcohol and oak letting the terroir speak.

The Warboys vineyard is organic and certified biodynamic and is planted adjacent to the cellar door in McLaren Vale. The fruit for the 2019 Warboys Shiraz was handpicked, wild fermented with a combination of whole berries and whole bunches, then matured in new and seasoned French oak for 14 months. On the nose, this is layered with deli meats and salted licorice, coffee grounds, purple berries and exotic spice. In the mouth, the wine is supple, fresh and concentrated: a dangerous combination for Shiraz lovers. Wines like this rarely get their chance to age. Lovely. Good. Yes. Drink 2022-2037.

Vines date back to as far as 1868, the youngest 1992. Right there you have an inkling of what is to come: a stunning concentration of fruit. Impressive, but the supple, savoury tannins are up to the task of meeting that deep intensity of black fruits, woody spice and violets. What a team for the future. Of course, this is not to forget the vanillan warm-oak component. A wine of history that still stands firm today. Drink by 2040.

ORIGNAL TASTING NOTE UPON RELEASE: Each November we anxiously await the release of this wine and with each successive vintage our expectations reach new levels, and yet in the back of our minds we have a nagging tall poppy syndrome - Viv Thomson surely can't produce a better wine than he did last year? He has to falter some time! Viv is too smart to be complacent, and as each vintage is blessed with spectacular fruit, he manages to create its perfect bottle expression. However, when nature turns against him as it did in 1999, there was no Thomson made - severe frosts saw to that. The 1997 Thomson is an expression of Shiraz fruit concentrate. This is almost the perfect wine. When tasted, it achieved the remarkable score of 99.3 out of 100, the highest ranking wine in memory at the time. Opaque crimson colour with mauve edges. Exceptional nose of violets, blackpepper, spice, liquorice allsorts, confectionary, vanilla and an aniseed end note. Totally mouthfilling. Concentrate of Shiraz! Flavours of blackpepper, spice, liquorice and blackcurrant, filling every cavity of the mouth. On the back palate the blackpepper flavour explodes and carrys through the after flavour in an exceptional long aftertaste that lasts for 5 minutes and more. Velvet smooth tannins. Perfect balance. AN AUSTRALIAN TREASURE AND A WONDERFUL PIECE OF HISTORY.

A monument of a wine, which has not been made for elderly drinkers. This is a drink for future generations – the sort of wine that might be served up to commemorate your great judgment as a wine collector by your grand children. Matured in 100% new Burgundian Nevers oak. The 2003 Astralis is the tightest of the recent vintages and a perfect expression of the long slow low yielding ripening year. The Burgundian oak staves have been air dried for 3 years and fired over a relatively cool flame, avoiding any charry contribution to the flavour profile.
Totally black purple colour – a complete saturate. Magnificent nose of anise, violets, blackberry and spice. A wine with the tannin structure of the Piggott Range yet with the palate voluptuousness of the Hickinbotham. Explosive, mouth filling concentrate of black pepper, blackberry and white pepper. Fine firm tannins which are highly bound with the fruit. Again a triumph for Clarendon Hills and a definitive expression of Romans ability and obsession with winemaking, more than justifying Robert Parker’s lavish praises.

A superstar effort in 2004, the inky/purple-colored SyrahPiggottRange reveals off-the-chart richness, complexity, and intensity. This old vineyard, planted on rocky shale and slate soils, produced a floral-scented Syrah exhibiting a distinctive minerality along with wonderful blackberry and cassis fruit, and a hint of wood. The mid-palate and finish are both long, textured, and intense. It needs 2-3 years of bottle age, and should keep for a minimum of 2 decades.

The Piggott Range vineyard vines are 25-30 years old, and are planted in rock and shale, with only 10-13 mm top soil. The vine roots work hard to establish themselves and force their way downwards between cracks in the rock and shale to find water. The yields are extremely low at one tonne per acre. The Piggott Syrah is matured in 100% new French oak barriques.

Tasting Note: (Tasted early 2000s) Totally opaque black, purple, crimson colour. Superb lifted nose, even more intense than the previous wines. Lifted notes of plum concentrate, blackpepper, spice, blackberry, violets and earth. A sniffers paradise! The palate overwhelms. This is concentration plus, and its hard to believe that the Astralis could surpass this flavour profile. Concentrated flavours of liquorice, blackberry and spice, with a degree of voluptuousness that is almost too much to handle – a sensuous overload. Roman describes this wine as the complete deal ‘steak, eggs and cigar’, one could add sex to that description as well. Layers of strong liquorice, spice and blackpepper followed by a hint of earth and subtle toasted oak. Fine firm tannin structure.

The Romas Vineyard is the highest and steepest section of the Blewitt Springs Vineyard and also produces the lowest yields – between 0.5 and 1 tonne per acre. The vines are between 70-75 years old. The winemaking process is essentially the same as for the other Clarendon Hills Grenache wines, except that the barrel composition has changed. 80% of the casks are one year old whereas 20% are two year old French casks. The minor change in composition compensates for the exceptionally low yields but as with the previous Grenache wines, the purity of fruit flavour is superbly expressed.

Tasting Note: This wine is the ultimate expression of Grenache – and is comparable to the finest from any region, anywhere in the world. Totally opaque crimson, purple colour. The nose is superb with wonderfully concentrated aromas of blackberry, spice, blackpepper, violets and just a hint of earth. The palate takes the variety into a realm of its own; total concentrate. It’s hard to even imagine that the humble, often neglected Grenache grape which has for years been blended back with other varietals, can take on such dimensions of flavour. Exotic layers of berries are woven together with flavours of blackberry, blackpepper, spice and liquorice allsorts. The tannins are perfectly balanced and echo the aftertaste of raspberries, exotic plum, blackberries and pepper.

It spent 18 months in oak, rather than it’s usual 12. Oak’s presence in the wine is no more than usual; if anything it simply feels more harmonious. To be released in March, I think.
In any case this is a wonderful release. It leaps from the glass with wonder on its lips. Plums and florals and spices and meats take a walk through a garden, woodsmoke suggested, summer alive. It’s elegant and refined and yet it’s all there, it’s all open. It gets you in the feels; it has a kind of satiny confidence, like it knows that it’s good and it knows that you’ve noticed. Fine fingers of tannin, curry leaf notes, berries. Florals here as mentioned but maybe not as pronounced as usual, as if viognier and shiraz have become one. Still there’s nothing reserved about this wine. Nothing. It’s just all there, ready, perfect. Drink by 2040+.

Some wines have such distinct DNA. This is one of them. It packs so many layers of flavour and depth, yet never moves much beyond medium body. It smells of a souk market; spicy, peppery and exotic. It's replete with dark fruit, wood char and a touch of wintergreen. Raw silk tannins matched to a neat acid line give freshness, vibrancy and a promise it will last some distance yet. Drink by 2035.

Co-fermented with 6% Viognier this wine displays a very deep dark red black tinged core with a bright dark red hue. Superb, perfumed aromatics of violets, dark plums, liquorice and clove tinged with hints of dried apricot and faint honeysuckle blossom from the glass. Lightly toasted oak and spicy pepper adding further interest. Medium bodied, savoury, complex and exceptionally long with a power wave reminiscent of Grand Cru Burgundy, the palate is slightly fuller and richer than the previous two vintages, yet still possesses its trademark power without weight characteristic. Supplely textured flavours of spicy dark plums, liquorice and faint dried apricot fan out across the palate like a peacocks tail, seemingly never ending. Underscoring the savoury fruit are nuances of vanillin cedar, light honeysuckle and traces of dried clove. Magnificent length with an exceptionally long aftertaste of spicy dark plum, liquorice, infusions of dried clove, faint dried apricot, perfectly integrated vanillin cedar and white pepper.

When placed next to '16 O'Riada, the colour seems light (though bright), but the perfumed, spicy bouquet with red flowers and fruits doesn't prepare you for the intensity and piercing length of the beautifully balanced medium-bodied palate. This is a truly glorious wine that draws you back again and again to explore the wealth of red fruit flavours, and the majesty of its textures and flavours. Drink by 2041.

Syrah and Macedon Ranges isn’t necessarily synonymous but there’s track record here and a very unique site tucked into native forest on a lift in the ranges where the wind belts through. Sloshy textured, red and black, bramble laced fruit character, white pepper, dusty, clove-woody spice, maraschino cherry and a ferrous, minerally finish with some bitterness and Brazil nut bitterness to finish. Savoury, savoury, savoury. Good gear, but. Drink 2022 - 2030+

Certified organic and biodynamic this wine is a blend of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Malbec that was matured in 50% new French oak for a period of 15 months.
Midnight black in colour with a dark red black tinged hue. The intense nose is a marriage complexity and refinement offering up delightful aromatics or red to black currants and mulberries which intermingle with hints of violets, dusty vanillin cedar, light tobacco, black olives and spicy bay leaf. Mid weighted, powerful and refined, rich ripe red to black currant and mulberry fruits are framed by a firm yet beautifully integrated tannin structure which gives the palate a graphite like feel. Spicy vanillin cedar, dusty earth, tobacco, subtle black olive and infusions of bay leaf line the back half. Robust yet amply fleshed it concludes with substantial length.
    Cellar 10-20 years plus.

The newly released DM Cabernet is a particularly auspicious one, celebrating what would have been the 100th birthday of Diana Madeline herself. No doubt, she would have been delighted with the wine. In fact, it is very hard to remember when this Cabernet would not have been amongst the very best released in this country. This latest release is likely to be seen as one of the finest they have ever made. This is not just a great Margaret River wine, it is a great wine.
Deep opaque purple hue. The nose is a whirling dervish of spices, cherries, tobacco leaves, cassis, black fruits, leather and dried herbs with hints of cloves and blackberries. The structure is immaculate while the wine is focused, with the intensity maintained the full length to a very long finish supported by silky tannins. Certainly young now, and although it really is enjoyable, expect this wine to give great pleasure over the next two decades. It is going to get even better. This will surely be one of the top wines of the year, even at this early stage. Drink 2023-2053.

    Ken Gargett - WinePilot.com

The 2021 Diana Madeline is composed of Cabernet Sauvignon (91%), Merlot (4%), Cabernet Franc (3%) and Malbec (2%). The only other time since the first 1995 vintage of this wine (formerly labeled as the Cabernet Merlot) that the percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon has crested 90% or higher was the 2016 vintage, which saw 93% Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2021 vintage in Margaret River was an interesting one, with several climate curveballs thrown at viticulturists during key times during the harvest season. Here, the fruit was handpicked on biodynamic fruit and flower days across five picks from the middle of March to the Super Moon flower day two weeks later. The wine was matured in French oak for 15 months (50% new). This 2021 is a lean, mineral rendition of the Diana Madeline, with bay leaf, rose petals, cassis, bramble and black tea forming layers that settle in the mouth. The tannins are grippy and very fine, causing one to chew slightly as one drinks. This is ethereal, as these wines often are, yet with line and length that belies its pretty curves and textures. The perfect, ideal apogee for this wine's drinking window is in the future. Get it while you can. Drink 2024-2039.

Cherry, plum, dark chocolate, dried rose, lead pencil, baking spice. It’s medium-bodied, saline and distinctly ‘mineral’ with a ferrous quality, crushed slate tannin, spice, I’m thinking Davidson plum?, with that hint of tartness, a musky perfume, so much energy, combining light and shade, and a long gently chewy tannic finish. Distinctive wine stamped firmly with a sense of place. Drink 2025-2040+

Diana Madeline. The name evokes a lot of emotions, for what the woman stood for then and what the wine stands for now. The 2021 vintage equals 50 years of cabernet sauvignon plantings at Cullen. When released in early 2023, it was on what would have been her 100th birthday. It’s a wine that can come from nowhere else, so strong is its sense of place. Expect to swoon over aromas of roses, violets and mulberries doused in baking spices, a ferruginous quality as much as detailed if persuasive tannins. It’s complex, complete and structured. Gosh, what a wine. What a woman. The perfect combination. Drink by 2045.

Certified biodynamic and organic. Magnificent pitch black colour with a very deep bright dark red black hue. On the nose a lovely mix of red to black currant and mulberry scents morph into violet, vanillin cedar, dried herb, tobacco, black olive and spicy bay leaf notes. Medium bodied, elegant and superbly structured, the palate features a tightly knit matrix of red to black currant, mulberry and black olive flavours. Bright youthful acidity and an assertive grainy tannin structure provide an iron girder like core. Notions of tobacco, dried herbs, vanillin cedar and spicy bay leaf infusions also chime in. Restrained and understated in its power at present it concludes long and rich yet compact.

Has the usual estate blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot, cabernet franc and malbec (92/4/3/1%), the grapes hand picked on fruit days between early February and early March, the components matured in French oak (50% new) for 13 months. The perfumed bouquet has already soaked up the new oak, the purity of the fruit in a cassis-redcurrant-blueberry spectrum. The small berries of a quasi-drought summer might have imposed awkward tannins, but the medium-bodied palate is so perfectly balanced it has a drinking span of 30 years and counting. Drink by 2055.

Great detail in that the wine comes from nine picks across fruit and flower days of the biodynamic calendar, spread across a month-ish lunar cycle. The Cullen way.
Another beautiful, soulful release, this one a bit darker, a bit bolder, a mesh of tannins over train tracks and tension, but a wine of significant pedigree and wow factor nonetheless. Dark chocolate and graphite aromas with salted plum, black olive, bay leaf and oyster shell. Flavours ripple with authority in that weave of tannin, dark choc again, panforte perhaps more apt, dark cherry, saline minerality, more bayleaf and cinnamon spice. Succulent in the finish, mouth-watering and very fresh. Compelling stuff. Drink 2024-2040+

Intense ripe blackberry, dark chocolate and liquorice aromas escape from the glass followed by some vanillin cedar, scorched earth and peppered dried meat notes. Rich and muscular the bold palate features blackberry, liquorice and dark plum fruits framed by robust tannins. Scorched earth, iron, vanillin cedar and spicy pepper characters lurk underneath. An assemblage of the best blocks from the Dalwhinnie original vineyard. Hand picked, vinified separately with some batches having 25% whole bunches included in ferment. Matured 20 months in French oak (30% new), followed by barrel selection and blending. Strikes a generous pose and colour. There's some pretty smart and attractive oak that is a big part of this wine's appeal. It contributes added gravitas, with wide-ranging influences from prominent spice to a toasty, smoky, mocha overlay. The ripe blackberry, plum, aniseed fruit loves it. Mouth-coating and long. From the estate's first plantings; matured for 18 months in new and used French oak. Deep, vivid crimson purple. Fascinating bouquet that has the bay leaf I often find on the back palate/finish of quality cabernet sauvignon; also cassis (no surprise) wrapped in a fine gauze of oak and pliable tannins. Line, length and balance are all attributes of a classic Margaret River cabernet. Drink by 2049.

From the original 1987 plantings in Yallingup, with a bit from the Abbey Vale Vineyard. I finished school in 1987, which now seems like a different age. Far less rules, and a lot more stonewashed jeans. I kind of prefer, for the most part, the Cabernets from 2019 over 2018, as they seem a bit more ‘minerally’ and serious.
Dark chocolate, peppermint tea, violet and black fruit, bay leaf, some spice and pencil oak. It’s dense and tight in gravelly tannin, a boysenberry crunch to acidity, tea and tobacco, plenty of purple and black fruit, and a tannic finish sporting crisp acidity, plenty of tannin, and excellent length. A green-bell-pepper and Szechaun-pepper hit on the nose before broadening into more savoury aromas of leather, game meat and beef stock. This is front-loaded with umami and tastes as if there has been quite a bit of vigorous extraction. Prunes, blackcurrant extract in clove oil, pine resin through a loose mesh of dry (but –just– not drying) tannins. Some red and purple wine-gums fruitiness before a very minty-menthol finish that becomes more and more earthy and a little bitter. Just a little on the heavy, dour side in terms of flavour. Domaine Charles Audoin was formed in 1972 by Charles and his oenologist wife Marie-Francoise, starting with three hectares in Marsannay. Their holding has now grown to around 14 hectares that captures some of the best parcels in Marsannay. Their son Cyril joined his father in 2000, and is now in charge of both vineyard and winemaking activities for the Domaine. Cyril is increasingly focused on vineyard health, to deliver wines with pure varietal expression and a sense of place. They are among the most serious wines from the area, and while juicy and approachable young, have the capacity to age gracefully for many years.

2020 was a very small cropping year due to the drier season. Some 600 dozen bottles were produced following rigorous selection. But once more we can be confident that our organic approach gives the vines greater strength and ability to perform in such years. Though dry, temperatures stayed modest through the growing season. The resulting wine has good natural vibrancy and balance.

The integration of oak and fruit is excellent here. Smoky bacon and black cherry flavours come across as seamless and united, apple juice acidity and raspberry notes adding freshness and brightness respectively. The smokiness of this wine is overt but positive, the assertive but well-folded (grainy) tannin likewise, so too the gentle woodiness bitterness on the finish. What I like most here is that there is flavour at every step: in the tannin, in the acidity, in the body and in the finish. Drink 2024 - 2033+

The intensity and grainy nature of this wine sets it apart through extra length and persistence. The colour has remarkable depth and youthful purpliness, with aromas that leap out of the glass and smack of blackberry, cassis and raspberry, floral and with the subtlest suggestion of jam. In the mouth, it's soft and round, supple and medium to full-bodied, with a fruit sweetness that really charms. It tastes like a blend rather than a pure Shiraz (Viognier?). The tannins are mild and svelte. A lovely wine with a big future in front of it.

    Notes from winery....
Our SmithCullam Syrah comes from the original “Winery Block” of Syrah planted in 1988. The wine homes in on the powerful, grainy ferrous tones from the ironstone soils, offset by the elegance achieved from organic farming and shading afforded these bunches by the east-west orientation of the rows. The wine is matured in large-format (3,500-litre) oak, which contributes to its freshness and juiciness. There’s a beautiful interplay between the earthiness and iodine notes of the Mourvèdre and the generosity and aromatics of the Viognier.

If you have been following my journey through the less big and bold Syrah/Shiraz, you will know I like them silky, pretty and a teeny bit savoury.
The Isolation Ridge is a perfumed and pretty riot on the nose, all violets, damsons, roses, thyme, blackberries, vanilla, baked quince and pencil shavings.
The palate is elegant and refined and from that rollercoaster of prettiness comes a refined fresh fruit acidity, supple tannins, black coffee, liquorice and that beguiling combination of floral notes in a well structured but not overly weighty Syrah. This is still a baby bundle of juicy and youthful mulberries, raspberries, damsons and plums, showing the beginning of what I expect to be a delicious and ever changing life. Very smart.

Greenock Creek wines always present themselves as intensely concentrated examples of their particular slice of the western Barossa. Initially, there is a quick blast of blackberry pastille in this year's release, which gives way to opulent blackberry and cherry fruits with hints of baking spices, dark chocolate-dipped raspberries and pressed purple flowers. If you peer deep into the distance, there are some liminal leathery/mahogany notes, too, wrapping the ripe, long tannins in a warm embrace. As always, mighty impressive stuff. Drink by 2038.

The 2020 vintage is made up of 65% Shiraz, 31% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Cabernet Franc matured in a mixture of 62% French and 38% American oak consisting of 2% new French oak puncheons and 98% seasoned French and American oak hogsheads for a period of 18 months.
Midnight black heart with a dark red black tinged hue. Alluring aromas of dark plum, blackcurrant and liquorice are ample in their intensity with vanillin cedar, subtle earth and dried herb notes also evident. Rich and silky textured the medium to full bodied palate is layered with dark plum, liquorice and blackcurrant fruits which meld into a vanillin cedar, dried herb, subtle earth and spice back drop. Seamlessly integrated polished tannins concluding long and plush.

A superb and harmonious Hill of Grace with wonderful complexity on the nose that keeps bringing you back to the glass. Minty blueberries, red berries and some blackberries. Heather and violets with beautifully integrated spices of peppercorn and five spice. Graphite, salt chocolate and cigar box, too. Intense, lush and concentrated. This is barely full-bodied but the concentration is simply effortless and the flavors grow on the palate. Super silky and svelte tannins glide through the even and cohesive palate. Persistent finish, lasting for more than two minutes. Let it breathe if you decide to open it now, but it will sleep well in your cellar, too. Screw cap.

The Hill of Grace vineyard, in Eden Valley, comprises 13 separate blocks, six of which feed into the Hill of Grace Shiraz. The oldest block (0.56 hectares), known as "Grandfathers," was planted around 1860. The other blocks were planted in 1910 (0.33 hectares), 1951 (1.08 hectares), 1952 (0.7 hectares), 1956 (0.88 hectares) and 1965 (0.57 hectares). The 2018 Hill of Grace Shiraz was matured in a combination of new (20%) and seasoned (80%) oak hogsheads (83% French, 17% American) for 18 months prior to blending and bottling. On the nose, the 2018 vintage assists this wine in speaking clearly of its regional location: raspberry and licorice, coal dust, black tea and tobacco leaf. There are inflections of black truffle and bone broth, which always seem to emerge, however the wine is brighter and more focused than I have seen. It offers a beautiful, svelte display of fruit and tannin, with all things in harmony in the mouth. This is very long, as we would expect from the pedigree of this wine and the vineyard. It is concentrated and intense, sinewy, elegant and powerful—a wine for the future generation. Drink 2023-2053.

The 60th anniversary of what is widely considered Australia's finest single-vineyard wine. Sometimes you've got to pinch yourself and ponder what a lucky existence this wine hack stuff is, sitting here in the Henschke cellar door having just tasted 26 vintages of Hill of Grace spanning back to 1958. Grace by name, grace by nature, it is an elegant, beautiful wine, tannin–acid architecture on point, the fruit depth is just stunning, dotted with five-spice, sage, pepper, charcuterie, crushed quartz and the most lovely, kinetic tannin structure. Finishes with great sustain, harmony and grace. Voluminous and complex, with amazing fruit density and just a complete wine. A classic! Drink by 2070.

It opens with gloriously heady scents of wild herbs, spice and pepper, thence flawlessly balanced dark berry fruits, velvet tannins and quicksilver acidity. It’s not often a red wine with a 30-plus-year future is ready for consumption from day one.

Form a single vineyard of 105yo shiraz vines on Mount Edelstone in the Eden Valley, farmed according to organic and biodynamic practices. Aged in 86/14% French and American oak (26% new) for 18 months. I was lucky enough to live next door to the Mount Edelstone vineyard for 8 years and have consumed a fair amount of Cooper's Green on the bench at the summit; I have seen the amount of fastidious work Henschke put into the vineyard. It's a special place. Bright, intense blackberry and blackcurrant fruits mesh with hints of Asian spice, tar, turned earth, rosehip, sage and high-cocoa dark chocolate. Displaying a beautiful, pure, dark fruit flow, it's a wonderfully complex wine with ripe long-grain tannins and sprightly mineral acid drive, finishing very long and graceful with a core of cassis and spice. Will cellar magnificently. Drink by 2052.

This has quite elegant red plum, raspberry and so much spice in this cooler vintage, together with gentle earthiness, then red plum and such expressive fragrance. Opens up to such primary complexity with air. There’s sleekness to the palate – acidity has thrived in this cooler vintage – and it carries a sense of depth and purpose in terms of fruit expression and is so focused. Long, very fresh finish. This cooler vintage suits Mount Edelstone. Lower yields with good concentration. Drink over the next decade or more. Screw cap.

Hung deli meat, star anise and blackberry adorn the nose of the 2017 Mount Edelstone Vineyard Shiraz. Discerning this is akin to peering over the counter at an Italian deli, with meat, cheeses and garlic hanging from the ceiling: it's enveloping and welcome. On the palate, the wine is bright and concentrated, with layers of salted blueberry, licorice and staunch (yet fine) tannins. It has flexibility and pliability, but it also has shape and form—all of it encased in a medium-bodied shell. It is savory and lean above all else, with bacon fat adorning all edges. Drink 2022 - 2042.

Kaleidoscopic, this glorious vintage is terroir translucent, transporting you to the vineyard with its signature aromas of dried sage, Eucalyptus olida (aka Strawberry Gum), wild mint, wattleseed, nutmeg and tinder. Soaring and super-expressive, these scents bring compelling dimension and meld exquisitely on the sweet, juicy plum and bramble palate, with its cocoa nib and earthy hints. Graceful, willowy tannins and mineral acidity make for a long, fluid, markedly perfumed finish. Irresistible already! Drink 2022 - 2042.

“The 2017 harvest had poor set, stayed quite cool early on, then a mad wind in spring which knocked a lot of the shoots off”, says Prue Henschke. Interesting soil profile; sandy loam, but of distinction because due to the prevalence of gravel in it, “this is a significant thing in Edelstone, the root depth is large, expansive, the vines work in a different way, the resulting fruit very much does its own thing”.
So fragrant, incredible high toned floral, spicy perfume – almost entirely that. Enticing start. Very fine, very composed to taste, a precise and poised release with tension and freshness the major words here. Dark fruited, yes, inky plum and dark berries, but a graphite and herb-laced tannin swish that forms a sheath and draws the wine long. SPice. Again. So much. Finesse personified. So beautiful. Much richer than The Wheelwright (though made in exactly the same way), and layered, with balsam notes. Lots of savoury herbs on the nose ('very Eden Valley' according to Stephen Henschke) and richly nuanced on the palate with a dry finish. Very subtle oak indeed. Velvety tannins and something saline, plus a hint of spearmint. So clean and refreshing on the end. Very clever winemaking. Drink 2023 – 2033.

The Mount Edelstone vineyard, situated in the Eden Valley, was planted in 1912 by Ronald Angas, a descendant of George Fife Angas, who founded South Australia. Unusual for its time, it was planted solely to Shiraz. First bottled as a single-vineyard wine in 1952, it has gone on to be recognised as one of Australia’s greatest. Maturation took place in a combination of 88% French and 12% American (54% new, 46% seasoned) hogsheads for a period of 21 months.

Opaque black dark red colour with dark red hue. Very perfumed the nose delivers a delightful sniff of liquorice, dark plums, subtle dark chocolate, vanillin oak and spice. Medium to full bodied the palate possesses loads of richness along with tons of class and finesse. Mouthfilling flavours of liquorice, blackberry and dark plum flood the palate with some underlying vanillin oak, spice and pepper. Supple beautifully rounded texture with silky tannins. Very long aftertaste of liquorice, blackberry, subtlety toasted vanillin oak, spice and pepper aftertaste.

Other reviews... ...so perfectly balanced and composed, its latent power may not be realised; black and red cherry fruits at its heart are complexed by lesser notes of plum and blackberry; the tannins are superb, the oak of high quality, and totally integrated on the very long, silky finish of this outstanding medium-bodied shiraz. First produced in 1952, the 2012 vintage marks the 60th release of this iconic wine. Planted in 1912 the Mount Edelstone vineyard now boasts vines more than 100 years old. Maturation took place in a combination of 87% French and 13% American (32% new, 68% seasoned) hogsheads for a period of 18 months.

From an exceptional vintage there’s no doubt that the 2012 Mount Edelstone will be heralded as one of the greatest produced to date.

Opaque black dark purple colour with a dark purple hue. Intense aromas of ripe blackberries and dark plums are to the fore with more subtle liquorice and dark chocolate nuances following finishing with a whiff of vanillin cedar and spice. Brimming with rich ripe fruit the palate is an essay in finesse and refinement featuring soft supplely textured flavours of blackberries, liquorice and dark plums gracefully gliding across the palate over subtlety smoked vanillin cedar, light meatiness and spice. Silky smooth tannins. Outstanding depth with a long aftertaste of dark plums, blackberries, liquorice, delicate smoky vanillin cedar, dried meats and spice.

Deep garnet in color, the 2002 Hill of Grace has an entrancing nose with profound aromas of warm black cherries, crushed blackberries and mulberries plus a touch of wild blueberries and hints of allspice, violets and toast. It is full-bodied, rich and seductive in the mouth, and yet it has lovely poise with a crisp acid line and a medium to firm level of fine-grained tannins plus great length. Delicious now, it will reward the patient and should drink to 2040+.

Holding its hue well; fragrant black fruits with touches of licorice and spice run through the bouquet, with oak in the background. The medium-bodied palate is feline and focused; very long, finishing with exceptionally fine-grained tannins. Harmonious and elegant, there is no intrusion whatsoever from the alcohol; effortless power. While retail prices always have a degree of elasticity, this wine has overtaken the price of the 02 Penfolds Grange, released at the same time.

From vines planted in '71. Hand-picked, destemmed, fermented separately on skins for 18 days, matured for 15 months in high quality French barrels. The best shiraz and cabernet are selected to showcase this long-time Australian blend. If there's a better one, I haven't seen it. This isn’t released until July 2020 but if Australian cabernet shiraz blends are to your liking then this release is worth jumping on as soon as you can.
It’s a seriously good wine. Its volume and silken mouthfeel announce themselves from the first sip but then the long chains of tannin, tobacco and dust and floral-like highlights, and compelling length serve to seal a quite wonderful deal. This is hearty, full-bodied Australian red wine in all its glory. It’s built on redcurrant, plum, blackcurrant and cloves and the mouthfeel/length combination here is really quite something. Hickinbotham's flagship 2018 The Peake Cabernet Shiraz checks in as a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Shiraz. Aged in 50% to 60% new French oak, the Shiraz component is drawn from the "drippings"—not the free-run that comes off the skins immediately, but not pressings, either. The two varieties complement each other, with the Shiraz adding richness of texture—a certain lushness and velvety feel that the pure-Cabernet Trueman is missing. Cassis and raspberry notes combine with hints of cedar and vanilla, mint and dried spices. Medium to full-bodied, this is velvety, rich, long and complete, just a joy to drink. Drink 2021 - 2035.

Incorporated into ferment was 10% whole bunch fruit with maturation taking place in French oak hogsheads (30% new) for a period of 18 months.
