It’s a rare achievement in this industry for a wine to maintain its price point for more than 15 years  without sacrificing quality, even more so when it's priced under $10. But the Three Brothers Reunited Shiraz has done just that. Most new labels (particularly in the sub $20 category) start with a bang and over deliver in the first couple of vintages in an attempt to win new customer's loyalty. However, in follow up releases they often stretch expectations of quality in order to meet increased demand. Gradually the brand fades away as customers are disillusioned with what's become a lesser wine. Three Brothers, on the other hand, has made quality and consistency its number one priority, only gradually increasing production while growing a very loyal customer base that's made this our top selling red for over 20 years. Further testimony to this label's commitment to quality was demonstrated by the fact that no wine was produced from the difficult 2011 vintage - the challenging conditions simply didn't offer fruit to meet the label's required standards.

Succulent, silky textured and deeply flavoured this is the ultimate quaffing Shiraz that delivers unbeatable value.

Very deep midnight black core with a dark red black tinged hue. Nosing draws out lifted aromas of dark plum, liquorice and dark cherries followed by some toasty cedar and peppered earth notes. Rich, velvety and juicy, dark plum, liquorice and dark cherry fruits unfold across the medium to full bodied palate with scorched earth, subtle dried herb and spicy pepper characters lying underneath. Excellent concentration and fruit weight for the price. Velvet smooth tannins impart a plush feel to the long refined and highly moreish finish.

An absolutely cracking McLaren Vale Shiraz from a top vintage. What more could you want? Small batch ferment, eight days on skins, and then maturation for 18 months in French oak. The colour is a vibrant and yet near opaque magenta. Ripe flavours just oozing through here. Chocolate, mocha and coffee bean notes. This is rich and full with big, bold flavours. Expect this to provide great pleasure over the next decade and more. If this rich style is your thing, you’ll love this.

Hard to imagine better value in McLaren Vale Shiraz.

Finally, the long awaited return of Nicks Secret UC Shiraz, this time from the much heralded 2021 vintage. Matured in new and aged French oak for 15 months it features an impenetrable inky black heart along with a very deep dark red black hue. Wafting out of the glass are scents of freshly crushed blackberries, plum and liquorice followed by spicy vanillin cedar and peppered earth notes. Rich fleshy dark plum, liquorice and blackberry fruits are delivered with terrific concentration as well as a youthful freshness. Lingering on the back half are inky earth, spicy vanillin cedar and pepper characters. Polished yet slightly chewy tannins with a long pepper infused aftertaste. With some bottle age this will further soften and fill out beautifully. The perfect BBQ red.

Last vintage, I thought the previous release of this wine might be the bargain of the year. This one goes close again. ****** is fast becoming one of my favourite reds for great drinking and exceptional value. The name comes from recognition that the McLaren Vale region supplied their best grapes to other districts for decades, where they contributed to so many cracking wines without due recognition – Langhorne Creek would be another region with a similar lack of credit.
The specific vineyards contributing here are found in Lower Tintara, Conte and Klaveniek. The juice went into small open batch fermenters before 15 months maturation in a mix of new and older French oak. The colour is a vibrant deep purple. The nose moves through an array of enticing aromas including cloves, florals, black olives and bitter dark chocolate. There is a wonderful plushness to the wine with notes of cassis, a hint of vanilla, coffee beans, chocolate and oodles of mocha on the palate. Seamless and supple, I’m sure that this could handle the best part of six to eight years in the cellar, but I wonder why you would not jump on to it now.
    Drink 2022-2030.

Water Wheel Vineyards, located in the Bendigo district, were established in 1972, however, it wasn’t until 1989 when the Cumming family purchased the winery and 20 acres of vineyard that it began to establish a market presence. With a philosophy of producing rich ripe flavour filled wines that delivered value way beyond their miserly price point, Water Wheel vineyards quickly established a very loyal following during the early 1990’s to the point where in the later part of the decade their Shiraz was in such high demand that they sold out within months of release.
The same philosophy remains at Water Wheel today, it’s just that things are done on a much larger scale with the group now having total plantings that exceeds 300 acres. Yields are capped at 3 tonnes per acre, which explains the concentration of flavour found in these wines. The winemaking is straightforward with fermentation taking place in open stainless steel fermenters. The finished wine is then matured in 2-5 year old American oak hogsheads for 24 months.

Classic Water Wheel Shiraz delivering a level of concentration and power way beyond its price point.

Sourced from Water Wheel’s oldest vineyards with an average age of 40 years, the lower yielding 2019 vintage delivered fruit with amazing concentration of flavour. Impenetrable inky black colour with a very deep black dark red hue. Leaping from the glass are liquorice, black plum and black cherry scents followed by spicy vanillin oak, subtle earthy fennel and pepper notes. Decadently rich, dense and bold the palate is swamped with opulent black cherry, liquorice and blackberry fruits which are supported by a robust tannin structure. Smoky vanillin oak, scorched earth and blackpepper characters ensue. Delivers superb concentration and power for the price.
Long plush yet sturdy conclusion that has a lingering scorched earth and blackpepper element to it.

Subregional sourcing across Seaview, Blewitt Springs and Clarendon, from 30-55yo vines. Matured in 15% new French oak. For the price, this is very hard to top. Even if it were double, it would be impressive. Dark cherry, violet, bitter chocolate, Dutch licorice and clove. Very regional fruit profile, but discernibly noble and far from the madding crowd by virtue of its lithe, slinky tannin profile and well-applied oak; a welcome belt of savoury restraint. After making a very impressive debut with his initial two offerings under the Barossa Gold label, Damien Tscharke has followed these up with another remarkable value from the 2009 vintage. Sourced from mature vines around 40 years of age, Damien Tscharke has in recent vintages chosen to retain more fruit from his vineyards instead of selling it to other Barossa producers such as Rockford and Peter Lehmann. The aim has been to create an entry level collection of Barossa wines that well and truly over delivers at it's A$15.00 price point, something which the Barossa Gold range has achieved admirably thus far. The wines are produced using traditional open top fermentation techniques incorporating hand plunging at least three times a day , followed by extended post ferment maceration and basket pressing.

A gold rush of flavour that delivers sensational value.

The extremely limited release and almost immediate sell out of Penfold’s Bin 150 Marananga Shiraz, generated a lot of excitement around Barossa’s Marananga subdistrict. Indulging one’s curiosity at the lofty prices demanded on the secondary market is not an option for many drinkers.Barossa wunderkind Damian Tscharke has delivered a sub $20 alternative, composed entirely of fruit from the Marananga district.

Totally opaque, black crimson colour with deep, dark, crimson red hue. The nose displays good lift with top notes of ripe blackberry, black plum and dark cherry followed by a spicy end note. Full bodied, the palate delivers very impressive concentration and richness for it’s price point. Opulent and mouthfilling flavours of ripe blackberry, dark plum and liquorice with a spicy back palate. Very fine grained tannins. Excellent depth with long, joosy aftertaste of ripe blackberry, dark plum and spice.

Damien Tscharke's 2008 Barossa Gold reds Making "a fair go" mean something.

When the Australian population began moving en masse to Bendigo and Ballarat to dig for gold, they did more than change the landscape. The instant wealth of migrants and exconvicts subverted the hierarchical British class system and in a definitive moment, the Gold Rush laid the foundations for the egalitarian Australian ethos of 'a fair go for all'. It's something most Australians still put at the top of their list when it comes to values. It's also why Damien Tscharcke is one winemaker who is set to enjoy many seasons of support and endorsement.
    A genuine eureka moment.

Here are two reds that go some way to levelling the playing field in the Barossa, and which for ourselves, after six weeks of tasting, were akin to discovering a nugget. They come from a small plot, part of a fifth generation family estate located in the prestigious Barossa sub-districts of ‘Marananga’ and ‘Seppeltsfield’, first planted in 1961 by Damien's Grandfather (though the family traditionally operated a mixed farm and stud piggery). After being introduced to winemaking & viticulture at University, the young Tscharke realised the untapped potential of the family's site, already a reliable source of 'A' grade fruit for Rockford, Peter Lehmann and Penfold's top wines. Damien subsequently inherited the vineyard. When you're in a family business it's not an easy thing to break with tradition, but since 2001 Damien has never looked back. In 2008, he's made a further decision to keep all the estate fruit for his premium 'Glaymond' wines, while also sensing potential at the opposite end of the market for which a new label was developed - "Barossa Gold". Consumers and professionals alike would argue that the last thing the Australian Wine scene needs is another brand (there are around 3500 active producers currently in Australia - multiply that several times for a label count). In fact, right now the only way to ensure the success of a new venture is to over deliver on both quality and value plus, plus. If for you 'a fair go for all' is just historical frippery or something facile, try these wines to relieve the bitterness of empty sentiment.
The difference between a ‘good deal’ and an exceptional one seems to be growing every day. 'Eureka' moments like this are getting harder to come by. Dig in!

    Tasting note...
Sourced from the Tscharke Family Vineyards planted three generations ago Fool’s Gold is a blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Shiraz and 10% Mourvedre that was matured for 23 months in a combination of new and seasoned French oak. Near opaque deep dark crimson red colour with deep black dark red mauve hue. The nose is quite perfumed with aromas of dark ripe raspberry, liquorice and dark chocolate to the fore followed by some confectionary and spice end notes showing excellent intensity and varietal character. Medium to full bodied the palate is both generous and opulent with flavours of ripe raspberry, dark chocolate, liquorice and a hint of mocha with a spicy back palate. Fleshy texture with fine grained soft tannins and aftertaste of spice, dark raspberry, liquorice and dark chocolate.
