2019 Duke's Magpie Hill Reserve Shiraz - Damaged Label
Duke’s seemingly can’t seem to put a foot wrong, whether it be Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon or Shiraz, the results are consistently stellar. Established in 1999 by Duke and Hilde Ranson as a retirement property, the wines have picked up a swag of awards over the last 20 years with their Riesling now considered as one of the countries finest.
Amply powered and possessing a refined opulence, this is a Shiraz that shows remarkable finesse.
Matured in French oak of which 35% was new. Impenetrable inky black in colour with a deep bright dark red hue. Potent ripe blackberry and liquorice scents dominate the nose with lightly toasted vanillin cedar, fennel and peppered earth notes also chiming in. The medium to full bodied palate is flush with rich dark plum, blackberry and liquorice fruits which meld into lightly smoked vanillin cedar, fennel, subtle earth and pepper characters. Amply powered, there’s a refined opulence to the texture, polished tannins showing plenty of underlying structure. The long, bold conclusion showing remarkable finesse.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.
The colour here is as vibrantly hued as the aromas that waft out of the glass – evident from a foot away. As with the cabernet – this is all things from the Single Vineyard but all things dialled up. Oak. Intensity and voluminous fruit. Gorgeous stuff. Spice and structure. Drink by 2040.
