Petaluma has released a limited number of Petaluma Coonawarra Red magnums to celebrate the new Millennium. Only 400 sets of these Magnums were produced and we have secured as much as we could of these rare wines. Each set consists of one magnum of 1988, 1987, 1986 and 1982 Petaluma Coonawarra red and represents a superb drinking experience as well as an exceptional if not very rare investment opportunity. The magnums are available for sale only as a complete set and are extremely limited.

1988 Petaluma Coonawarra Millennium Magnum

Bright crimson colour, showing its age very well. The nose displays aromas of blackcurrant, cedar and truffle with just a trace of leafiness which detracts but by no means overshadows the fruit. The palate is very Bordeaux like with its cedar, blackcurrant and truffle flavours superbly meshed with some very fine grained tannins which are followed by a blackcurrant, truffle and earthy finish. Cellar a further 5-8 years.

1987 Petaluma Coonawarra Millennium Magnum

Medium weight crimson colour. Again a hint of leafiness on the nose followed by aromas of blackcurrant, spice and a hint of aniseed. The palate is impressive with its mouthfilling flavour of confectionary, blackcurrant, spice, truffle and liquorice. Near perfect balance with fine grained tannins and very long aftertaste. Cellar 5-8 years.

1986 Petaluma Coonawarra Millennium Magnum

Deep crimson colour. The wine is showing more development than the 1987 and 1988 and ranks fourth in the line up from our score sheets, whereas Croser places this wine third. Delicate confectionary and blackcurrant nose. More restrained than expected and probably in part due to the fact that the wine had been opened and decanted some 2-3 hours earlier. A classic example of a wine that would have been more lifted upon opening followed by an immediate decant and service. The palate appears to be almost fully developed, soft, easy drinking with flavours of confectionary and blackcurrant, but lacking Petaluma power. Soft tannins. Cellar 2-3 years further, to capture the fruit at its peak.

1982 Petaluma Coonawarra Millennium Magnum

This is the odd ball of the Millenium Magnum line up, and a simply wonderful wine. The secret is that it has a 12% Shiraz component which totally dominates the wine and evokes a Rhone like aroma and flavour reminiscent of the best of Hermitage. Croser likens this wine to the best of Jaboulet's La Chapelle and indeed it would no doubt rival the wine in a line up.Medium bodied. Spicy perfumed Rhone like nose of violets, truffle, earth and spice. The palate is Classic Petaluma in its power and concentration of flavour. The Shiraz component gives the wine a complexity boost on the palate with cedar, earthy truffle, confectionary and spice flavours abound. Perfect balance, excellent length and very long aftertaste of spice cedar and confectionary. Cellar a further 3-5 years.
