This wonderful spirit is a part of Anchor’s endeavor to re-create the original whiskey of America. This release was distilled in a small copper pot still at the Anchor distillery on San Francisco's Potrero Hill, from a mash of 100% rye malt. Rye was the grain of choice for America's first distillers (as opposed to present day corn), and using a mash of 100% rye malt produces a uniquely American whiskey. Old Potrero rye was aged in new handmade charred oak barrels. In traditional barrel making, the cooper heats the staves over a fire of oak chips, allowing them to be bent and formed into a barrel. During this process, the inside of the barrel becomes lightly toasted. By the early 19th century, coopers had learned that if they allowed the heat to continue, the inside of the barrel would burst into flames and become charred. At the Anchor distillery, they have found that handmade oak barrels–charred in this traditional manner–impart a rich color and unique character to rye whiskey. This is an outstanding example.

Tasting note: Nose: Despite the lower strength there is no shortage of he-man aromas; the slight feintiness takes a tad longer to burn off but it’s a harmless, earthy flaw compensated by a bewildering array of over matured fruity notes seasoned by soft linseed, a vague herbal note and a dollop of manuka honey. One of the heaviest OP noses yet. Taste: you need about five minutes to sort your way through this one: the rye is the first note apparent and then it breaks off into three or four different directions, each with a varied flavour code: part of the rye contains cocoa and is dry and deliciously chocolaty while another faction takes the route to Demerara with a softly estered rum beat to it. As a compliment to this a rye and honeyed thread weaves its way around the palate. Finally the rye also links up with a sawdusty vanilla effect, which passes for oak; Finish: impossible to tell where the middle ends and the finish starts: this is top shelf whiskey for adults and ones who know how to make the most of the finish of their mouthful: just sit back, eyes closed and listen to the spellbinding, bitter-sweet tales of rye and honey. I know some of you will be beating your breasts and wailing: OP’s down from teeth disolving barrel proof to a sissified 46% abv. The reason, I have been told, is that barmen have a big problem when trying to mix at cask strength.
