Glenmorangie Pride 1981 sits at the top of the Glenmorangie heirarchy as the most expensive single malt the distillery has produced to date.
This limited edition whisky of 1,000 pieces is presented in a striking Baccarat crystal decanter created by French designer Laurence Brabant, and wooden casing created by star Dutch furniture designer Wouter Scheublin. The story of its contents dates back to 1981 when the whisky was first distilled, pre-destined to be bottled in its youth. By 1999 the liquid had transformed into an exquisite vintage 18 Year Old, ready for bottling. It was at that time that head whisky creator Bill Lumsden was offered a small selection of Sauternes ‘Barriques’ from the vineyards of Château d’Yquem and thus conceived the idea for this special new whisky; to be aged for an extended period of 10 years in these noble casks.
An intense, pungent, earthy nose, with polished furniture, spices, oak tannins, and liquorice. The palate is waxy, with sherbet, honey, baked apple, orange marmalade, sultanas and a hint of smoke in the lengthy finish. A very untypical Glenmorangie, and another fascinating example of innovation by Glenmorangie’s Dr Bill Lumsden. 4 stars - Gavin D Smith, Tom Cannavan - www.whisky-pages.com
