Tasting note: [10ml sample] Gareth Andrews nicknamed this working collaboration “The BFG” (Black Fleurieu Gate). It's a combination of two casks - one x Apera filled with peated new make distilled and matured at Black Gate Distillery in Mendooran NSW, the other a Tawny cask filled with peated new make from the Fleurieu Distillery in South Australia. The result is one of the purest, maltiest, most lipsmacking whiskies of the year. At its core, this is all about rich, honey drizzled barley with a little dried mango fruitiness, wrapped up in a sultry slather of sweet, sooty peat that places it somewhere between Lochindaal or Inchmoan (other tasters drew comparison with Clynelish). The melting butter-menthol finish evokes medium-peat Bruichladdich. Blending achievements like this are risky, so one can appreciate the vision involved. Andrews is already working on a second edition. This one's going to be a challenge to beat. 300 bottles. Sold out at the distillery. Final stocks. 48% Alc./Vol.
