Riesling

One of the world's great grape varieties and the acknowledged king of German vineyards, also important in Alsace, Riesling goes through a number of ripening phases making it incredibly varied. Picked early it can form a base wine for Methode Champenoise; a little later, it makes a wonderfully crisp, aromatic lemon-lime filled dry white. A little riper the grapes produce an excellent, slightly sweet 'Spatlese' wine, later again an 'Auslese', and so on. In Australia, crisp, minerally, citrus-led styles dominate, with regions like South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia producing the finest examples. Fish, shellfish and crustaceans are perfect partners. Browse our top rated Riesling wines here.

Light in weight with a brisk feel, lemon and lime flavours are to the fore trailed by oily toast and steely kerosene like characters. It just has that little something extra this year. It's its usual floral self, underwritten by citrus juice and rind, a kind of chalkiness at play through the finish. Sheer intensity of flavour though, from the outset, is it really excels. Drink by 2025.

Brilliant pale straw colour with highlights of green around the edges and a watery hue. Intense lime and citrus aromas infused with talc jump out of the glass followed by some orange rind and chalky mineral notes. Concentrated lime and citrus fruits are underpinned by sizzling acidity with orange rind, chalky talc and steely mineral characters also evident. Superb intensity and drive for such a miserly price. The 2015 (Lieser) Niederberg Helden Riesling Auslese –Goldkapsel– (AP 14) is very intense and fine at the same time, with smoky and lemony flavors, a remarkable concentration and a perfume-like flavor of grapefruits. This wine is pure, piquant and concentrated, highly finessed, fresh and light on the palate. This is an intense, lush and elegant Auslese with a delicate and endlessly salty finish that reveals a very attractive grip and huge aging potential. With 7% alcohol and just a bit of botrytis.

Selbach-Oster has a history in the wine trade dating back 1660, while the current winery was formed in the mid 1800's. Known for producing highly detailed and pure expressions of Riesling, Selbach-Oster have vines planted in some of the greatest sites in the Mosel, including Zeltinger Himmelreich, Schlossberg, and Sonnenuhr; Wehlener Sonnenuhr; and Graacher Himmelreich and Domprobst. Today, Johannes Selbach and his wife Barbara, with the increasing help of son Sebastian and daughter Hannah, manage their vineyards and winery with passion and respect for the estate’s long held traditions. Johannes, like his late father Hans, has continued the use of traditional oak fuder in his cellar, bringing in new large casks every few years. Vinification is carried out in a combination of fuder and stainless steel, in a hands-off manner with no fining, and predominantly with wild yeasts. The focus is on meticulous work in the vineyard with the aim to produce and bring home perfect fruit.

    Other Reviews....
From the steep and shallow as well as warm part of the cru, with less fine soils than the Schlossberg, the 2020 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Kabinett offers a clear, pure and stony bouquet with rocky and flinty notes. Lush and elegant, refined and complex on the palate, this is an expressive, finely grippy and salivating Sonnenuhr Kabinett that is not really in a Kabinett style, but it's gorgeous and has age-worthy quality. 9% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022. Drink 2028 - 2060.

The 2020 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett was fermented down to fruity-styled levels of residual sugar. It offers a beautiful nose of cassis, passion fruit, herbs, and spices. The wine proves subtle and racy on the palate and leaves a gorgeously intense feel of racy and zesty fruits in the nicely light-footed finish. The after-taste underlines the raciness and playful side of the wine. It may have a touch more presence that your usual Kabinett but makes this more than up through intensity and focus. Drink 2026-2040.

The 2020 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett was fermented down to fruity-styled levels of residual sugar. It offers a rather engaging nose made of pear, peach, and citrusy fruit, and floral elements. The wine develops quite some presence on the palate (it has 9% of alcohol) and leaves a subtle feel of canned peach in the long finish. It develops a great feel of finesse and presence in the after-taste. Drink 2026-2040.

Planned to be a Kabinett that finally got too ripe (100° Oechsle), the 2019 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese * is clear and intense on the nose. Juicy and quite rich on the palate, this is a piquant and acidity-driven Spätlese with an enormously piquant and salty finish. Picke din the first week of October, it has laser sharp acidity that cuts through the rich texture that is based on 15% to 18% botrytis fruit. Tasted at the domain in September 2020. Hang on to your hat. With its enormous ripeness and brilliant acidity, this monumental wine defies the limits of the Spätlese category. None of the exotic fruit that’s so typical for 2019, rather you're in the kingdom of the peach here ! Decades of aging potential. Drink or hold.

The 2019er Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese * was made from fruit harvested at 100° Oechsle and fermented down to sweet levels of residual sugar (81 g/l). It exhibits some smoky, minty, and ripe scents of pear, quince, almond cream, lavender, pineapple, and smoke on the nose. The wine reveals a more exotic and animating side on the delicate and subtly smooth palate, and leaves one with a feeling of presence and intensity, but all focused and chiseled in the long finish. Fermented in glass balloon for 22 months and bottled at the end of August this year, the 2018 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese is highly concentrated yet pure and spicy/stony on the apricot-scented nose that is enormously detailed and refined for this class. Enormously rich and juicy-piquant on the palate, this is a fantastically precise and stimulating TBA that will become a legend years from now. This is a perfectly balanced noble sweet wine with unreal precision. Picked with 201° Oechsle and bottled with nearly 7% alcohol, 318 grams of residual sugar and 11.5 grams of total acidity. Tasted from AP 22 20 in September 2020. Drink 2030 - 2100.

The 2018er Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese was harvested at 201° Oechsle and was fermented down to fully noble-sweet levels of residual sugar. It offers an absolutely magnificent and deeply complex nose of apricot, apple jelly, honey, marzipan, almond paste, coconut cream, dried apricot, and even a hint of floral nuances. Despite its richness and impressive levels of residual sugar, it proves crystal clear on the palate and rewards one with plenty of yellow honeyed fruits delivered with creamy and unctuous viscosity. Ripe, pure, and zesty acidity runs through the wine and gives it great focus and intensity right into the incredibly long finish. This TBA is simply stellar! Drink 2038-2118.

This “one-star” BA has a “no-star” counterpart which I did not taste. “They were both very good and would have made an outstanding blend,” said Selbach, “but this lot exhibited a tick more finesse,” so he opted for separate bottlings, of which this one constituted 200 liters. White raisin and apple jelly are accompanied on the nose by prickle of lemon peel and radish, then pick up brown spices, honey, hazelnut paste and mango chutney on a viscous yet buoyant palate, leading to a vibrant, superbly multifaceted and ravishingly sustained finish. Drink 2019 - 2060.

The 2017er Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Beerenauslese * was harvested at a massive 155° Oechsle, i.e. already in TBA territory. It displays an immensely complex nose made of nut paste, raisin, candied grapefruit, mango, smoke, vanilla and bergamot. The wine is superbly aromatic on the palate where it delivers mango, honey, raisin, plum, nut paste, apple jelly and orange jam with remarkable presence and delicacy. The finish proves hugely pure and immensely long. The combination of density and finesse defies all logic. What a great dessert wine in the making! Drink 2027-2067.

The 2023 Single Vineyard Riesling delicately balances between being 'dry' and 'off-dry' (8.6g/l grams residual sugar), and achieves a remarkable equilibrium between acidity and fruitiness. All the grapes for this wine come from a single vineyard located in the Tea Tree sub-region of Coal River, which was planted on dark clay in 2004 with a vineyard density of 5000 vines per hectare. The grapes are carefully hand-picked, destemmed, and then undergo 8 hours of skin contact maceration before being pressed and transferred to tanks for fermentation. Fermentation is halted when the ideal sugar-to-acid balance is achieved, and the wine is left on lees for several months, with gentle stirring every two weeks.

Fine riesling, verging on exceptional. Aromas of granny smith granita, lime sherbet, ginger and spiced quince. The acidity, a juicy balancing beam as the wine twists, turns and meanders across the wave of fruit intensity, staining the cheeks. A judicious dollop of sugar, draped across the finish mitigates severity, while promoting juiciness. Super length. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Intensely flavoured and racy, this is one super scrumptious Watervale Riesling.

Brilliant very pale straw almost water like colour with a glimmer of green around the outskirts. Powerful lime, citrus and orange rind scents leap from the glass pursued by talc and chalky mineral notes. Bursting with a concentrate of lime, citrus and orange rind fruits, the mouth watering palate is underscored by wet slate, talc and chalky mineral elements. Dry, lip smacking finish with crunchy wet steel infused acidity leading into a very long and zesty mineral laced aftertaste.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.

Brilliant water like core with a greenish tinged outskirts. Distinct lime juice and granny smith apple scents are trailed by lemon, talc and chalky mineral notes. Searing acidity gives the wine a laser like focus underpinning flavours of lime juice, lemon and green apple. A terrific follow-up to the excellent 2020, this has piercingly fresh aromas of lemon and lime. Very floral, with some white peach, too. There’s such finesse and polished texture on the palate with grapefruit and lemon flavors wrapped in long and tight. Brilliant. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

The 2015 Riesling Clos Sainte Hune comes from the historic, south- and partly east-facing part (1.67 ha) of today's Grand Cru Rosacker. From deep Muschelkalk soils, the Sainte Hune opens with a deep, ripe, precise and highly complex nose with nutty and lemon flavors. Powerful, rich, piquant and concentrated on the palate, this is a beautifully complex, highly elegant and salty Riesling with intense citrus flavors and great balance in the endless finish. This Riesling builds effortlessly in the mouth. Its acidity is perfectly integrated: richness and power are magnificently poised by finesse and elegance and don't weigh heavily. This is a truly great and mouthwatering Riesling in the dry style (bottled with 14 grams of residual sugar and 14% alcohol) and can age over decades. It is surely among the finest wines being produced in 2015 in Alsace and one of the greatest Saint Hunes I have ever tasted. Drink 2025 - 2050.

Bright golden-tinged straw-yellow. Enticing nose of yellow apple, mirabelle, crystallized ginger and white flowers, complicated by lemony minerality. Dense, fresh and juicy, displaying outstanding sugar-acid balance and an opulent mouthfeel that is nicely lifted by penetrating notes of mirabelle, lime, wet stones, lemon peel and almond. While this enters sweet, it finishes very clean and dry. Boasts one of the most fragrant, prettiest and most forward noses I recall in a young CSH. Drink 2025-2040.

A complex, youthful wine with apple, pear and herbal notes. The hint of tannin really helps support the medium-full body, the considerable concentration and the long herbal finish that's really suave and silky. Better than some Grand Cru wines of this vintage. Better from 2020 and should age through 2040.

Luminous straw-yellow. Complex, mint-accented aromas of nectarine, tangerine and powdered stone, plus a hint of licorice. Then bright, juicy and dense, showing outstanding acid-sugar balance and a penetrating juiciness to the stone fruit and herbal flavors. Finishes multilayered and very long, displaying noteworthy clarity and limy cut on the saline finish. Wine lovers everywhere know just how great Frédéric Emile Rieslings can be, but this looks to be a real knockout in the making; I absolutely love this wine’s mineral drive and precision. It pulls off the neat trick of being both very ageworthy and also lovely to drink right now. I was happy to know that my palate was still working after an extremely long day of tasting when I told Pierre that in this vintage of Frédéric Emile I found more of the Geisberg than the Osterberg (in most vintages, the wine is a blend of 60/40 Osterberg-Geisberg, at times even 70/30, but this year it’s more like 55/45). Drink 2026 - 2039.

The lemon-sherbet note here is really beautiful. Then comes a wealth of herbs, ranging from thyme to parsley, with a touch of sea salt, before turning to more floral nuances, such as cherries and almond blossom. The powerful acidity seems to surround the whole mouth and makes this almost like licking a lemon; the unmistakable dryness is all the more enjoyable because of it. Long and very elegant on the finish. Drink now.

The 2014 Riesling Cuvée Frédéric Emile is highly complex on the clear, intense and smoky, lemony nose. Clear, fresh, straight and very mineral on the nose, this is a pure but complex, intense, stony Riesling that is pretty austere at the moment. Provided with racy acidity, but concentrated and mineral on the palate, this is exceptional dry Riesling with great tension. To be served in 10, 20 and even in 30 years. Drink 2025 - 2040.

Vivid straw-green. Delicate nuances of jasmine and lemon verbena complicate aromas of green apple, lime and minerals. Pure and penetrating on the palate, boasting superb definition to the flavors of gin, mint, minerals, violet and lemon zest. The finish is remarkably crystalline and long. This Frédéric Emile is currently dominated by its Osterberg component (the cuvée is a blend of Osterberg and Geisberg grand cru grapes), which brings chiseled acidity, as opposed to the Geisberg’s ripe fruit personality and licorice quality. Despite the difficult year, this is likely to become a memorable Frédéric Emile. So much so, in fact, that it’s currently impossible to choose between it and the more famous Clos Sainte Hune. Drink 2022-2045.

Trimbach's iconic 2017 Clos Ste Hune Riesling is from an exceptional 1.67-hectare plot on the grand cru Rosacker in Hunawihr that has belonged to the family for more than two hundred years. The vines cultivated on this south/southeast-facing cru on Muschelkalk limestone and yellow limestone average over 50 years of age. The 2017 opens with a clear, intense and elegant nose of fully ripe and even dried white fruits intermingled with fine terroir aromas of weathered limestones and even hints of iodine and grapefruit. Elegant and fresh on the palate, this is a highly complex, saline and juicy but alkaline, structured Saint Hune with aromatic lemon and grapefruit aromas intermingled with ripe and fine tannins and a characteristic salinity that lingers and lingers. The concentration and complexity of this superb dry Riesling is uplifted on the finish that is spectacularly long, indicating a still youthful wine that will benefit from further bottle aging and can be aged for decades. 13.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in January 2023. Drink 2027 - 2055.

Vivid straw-green with gold highlights. Highly aromatic on the nose, revealing hints of pear, lime, white pepper, candied ginger, quince and even raspberry. Enters sweet, then turns more austere and piercing. The penetrating, long, very suave finish offers complex, concentrated flavors similar to the aromas. That rare note of raspberry repeats in the mouth. A readier-to-drink CSH than usual, but it will age well. The Clos has been organically farmed since eight years ago, and I while I am very careful about making blanket statements on this subject, I think that the wines are now even better than they were before. Whether it’s the organic farming or not, I don’t know, but the possible connection is intriguing, to say the least. Drink 2025 - 2035.

From the south and south-east facing Ribeauvillé grands crus Geisberg and Osterberg with low-yielding vines averaging 45 years old, the 2013 Riesling Cuvée Frédéric Emile displays a deep, complex and very elegant bouquet of ripe, rather tropical fruit aromas along with some floral flavors. Full-bodied, juicy, round and elegant on the palate, this mineral-laced and well-structured wine indicates a firm but ripe acidity and a lingering salinity as well as an impressively pure and mineral length. Bright straw-green. White peach and mint aromas are complicated by delicate herbs and chlorophyll on the enticing nose. Intensely flavored and deep, conveying a saline freshness to the stone fruit and herb flavors. Finishes pliant and long, with firm minerality and a suggestion of gingery spices. This Frédéric Emile is more influenced by the Geisberg than the 2014; it's more showy and concentrated than the 2014 Frédéric Emile but perhaps less refined. The 2014 Riesling Clos Ste Hune is clear and intense on the concentrated nose, offering ripe white-fruit aromas. On the palate, this is a bone-dry, vital and finessed Riesling with a long and tension-filled, salty finish. The 2014 is a kind of quintessence of the Ribeauvillé/Hunawihr terroir: pure, lean, stony and salty, with no flesh, but lots of bones and minerals at this very early moment. Picked at 35 hl/ha this is a straight Sainte Hune that will last for for 30+ years. Drink 2030-2054.

Tasted from a special magnum commemorating the 10th anniversary of this sub-regional release. The fruit is from several vineyard sources, with some of the material dating back to plantings from 1975. Quintessential Clare Valley riffs on Rose’s lime juice, quince paste, tonic, preserved lemon rind, wild fennel and gardenias. Dry and medium-bodied by virtue of the sheer extract and density of the mouthfeel. Yet despite the dryness, there is nothing hard. Tactile and impressively juicy across a tenacious finish. Daniel Vollenwieder was part of a pioneering movement of winemakers who returned to Mosel in the early 2000’s, rejuvenating abandoned vineyards. These are some of the oldest ungrafted Riesling vines in the world. The steepness of the vineyards is something to marvel, but they’ve still managed to convert the vineyards to organic practises, recently being certified. Fruit for this wine comes from the best plots in the Goldgrube.

From a picture-book vintage with an inhomogeneous flowering in later June and picked over two weeks between September 24 and October 7th (beautiful sunshine all the time), the Siefersheim 2020 Heerkretz Riesling GG opens with a discreet but deep and substantial, finely mineral or herbal and flinty/reductive bouquet with intensity and sur lies notes as well as those of broken stones. Round, refined and very elegant on the palate, with fine tannins and crystalline, saline acidity, this is a generous but classical Heerkretz of great substance and mouth-tickling grip and acidity. Fruity and non-fruity components are in superb balance here, and the finish is salivating. I wish I had some bottles of this wine in my cellar. This is so delightful in the nose, but there are so many dimensions to the aromas that it's not easy to grasp this, without sinking into this enormously complex wine. The aromas range from leaves and flowers, dripping after a tropical downpour, to ripe stone fruit, all the shades of citrus zest and delicate spice Tightly wound on the very concentrated, silky palate with minerality that's almost off the scale. So saline and so mouthwatering at the super-long finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

Brilliant pale straw colour with greenish tinged edges and a watery hue. Intense lime, citrus and orange rind scents blossom out of the glass followed by some orange blossom and wet steel notes. Invigorating lime and lemon fruits race across the palate underscored by precise laser like acidity. Finishes dry and steely with some orange blossom infusions lingering on the long crunchy mineral infused aftertaste which has a tangy feel to it.

‘My first attempt at riesling. No idea who to make it so I rang a good mate Tom Barry. Said if you have some old foudre just press it dirty, minimal clarification and ferment it in the old large vat. That’s what we did, sees 12 hours skin contact, then fermented in Austrian foudre’. Pretty much ideal from where I sit! Though I’d probably go to 48 hours skin contact, but hey… anyways, what a coup. From Yea Valley.
Stellar drinking, easy appeal, riesling DNA strong and lots of character and detail on offer. For the acid hounds amongst us, the acidity is super bright. For those seeking textural oomph and grip, that’s there too. For those after perfume, juiciness, a cavalcade of mixed citrus fruit, juice and pith, well, guess what, its also in the mix. It’s quite a bold expression in all this going on. And in that, complex, energetic, wickedly drinkable and generally very clever as a wine. At $20 RRP? Pretty much the best riesling in the country from where I sit. Ludicrous! Drink 2022 - 2030.

From the blue ribbon calcareous soils of Watervale where shards of limestone dot the red soil, the Wilson Watervale Riesling is picked at the earliest level of maturity to give a light, fresh and fruit forward style.
Brilliant water like core with a subtle tinge of green around the outskirts. Jumping from the glass are intense lime juice, citrus and orange rind scents which are followed by some distinct talc, green apple and chalky mineral notes. Scrumptious lemon and lime fruits are underscored by racy acidity which imparts a zesty feel. Lingering through the back half are subtle orange rind, talc and chalky mineral elements. Boasting outstanding power it finishes dry, long and zingy.

The DJW vineyard was planted by John and son Daniel Wilson in 1997. At the time, the aim was to produce additional fruit for the successful Wilson Polish Hill River Riesling but the vineyard had other ideas. From the first vintage it was immediately obvious that the DJW vineyard was quite different from the Polish Hill River vineyard. The grapes and bunches were larger and the vineyard produced a spectrum of flavours that had their own unique qualities. As a consequence a new Riesling was born and was named after the single vineyard from where it originates, the DJW.
Brilliant water like core with highlights of green around the outskirts. Intense lime juice, lemon and orange rind aromas bound out of the glass with terrific intensity complimented by some talc, green apple and slatey mineral notes. Engulfing the mouth watering palate are concentrated lime juice and citrus flavours which are wrapped up in a chalky texture that carries plenty of volume. Engaging chalky talc, orange rind, wet steel and flinty mineral elements lie underneath. Zingy acidity with a long forceful and highly energised finish.

Wilson’s Polish Hill River Riesling is sourced from their oldest vineyards planted over 40 years ago. Its miniscule yields typically produce a wine rich in citrus fruits within a steely structure, tight with lots of minerality. Beneath the iron stained clay lies a bed of decomposing slate and scattered quartz. It’s also not unusual to find remnant pottery and agricultural implements from the Polish Settlers who once lived and farmed the area now planted to this small vineyard.

A stunning Polish Hill Riesling that has intense, mouth filling flavours sculptured by chiselled acidity.

Brilliant very pale straw colour with gleaming green tinged edges and a watery hue. Powerful aromatics of lime, lemon and Granny Smith apple engulf the olfactory senses complimented by wet steel, subtle chalky talc like notes and minerals. Racy lime, citrus and to a lesser extent orange rind flavours are delivered with magnificent concentration, stunning drive and show a real textural presence within a chiselled structure. Green apple, wet steel and chalky mineral elements also chime in. Threading the enormous volume of fruit is crunchy mineral infused acidity which provides a steely backbone. The finish exceptionally long, mouth filling and intense.

From the blue ribbon calcareous soils of Watervale where shards of limestone dot the red soil, the Wilson Watervale Riesling is picked at the earliest level of maturity to give a light, fresh and fruit forward style. The quality of the 2022 Clare Rieslings has thus far been nothing short of exceptional and this wonderful rendition from Watervale continues that hot run of form.
Brilliant water like core with highlights of green around the edges. Intense lime and citrus aromas leap from the glass with some orange rind, distinct talc and steely mineral notes also evident. Driving the mouth watering palate are zesty lemon and lime flavours with some orange rind, wet steel, talc and chalky mineral characters adding further interest in the background. Crunchy fresh acidity lends tension. The finish very long and highly scrumptious.

The 2021 Morstein Riesling GG offers a deep and intense yet pure, nuanced, fresh and highly complex bouquet of crushed limestone, even chalk intertwined with bright, lemon fruit aromas. This bouquet is nothing less than spectacular in all its purity, subtle intensity and depth. The palate is silky, pure and saline, beautifully fine and fresh, very elegant and long yet still discreet and reduced in its expression. However, this is a chalky and lemony Mortsein from a cool year that will gain texture and complexity with bottle age. This will turn out to be a classic, and I can only recommend to buy more than you might think to buy based on the conservative score. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in August 2022. Drink 2028 - 2050.

As deep and dense as it is subtle and mysterious, this very youthful 2021 GG is like a great ocean liner just setting off on a journey across the North Atlantic. And under the keel lie several thousand meters of dark water. Astonishing textural complexity and a very compact core. Enormously layered finish that has all the spice and wild herb aromas we expect from this great site. From biodynamically grown grapes with Respekt certification. Vegan. Drink or hold.

The 2021 Aulerde Riesling GG offers a deep, spicy, refined and very elegant bouquet with ripe fruit and finely flinty as well as phenolic nuances. Lush and savory on the palate, this is a very elegant and harmonious Aulerde with fine acidity and stimulating salinity and lots of refreshing grip on the pure and crisp finish. This is a classic in the making that needs another three to five years in the bottle, but it can also be enjoyed today. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in August 2022. The 2021 vintage has given the bold and generous character of this site a cool herbal element. Next to the ripe mirabelle and melon fruit are notes of licorice and sandalwood. The grapefruit acidity lifts the rather full body very nicely. Quite a firm finish with plenty of fine tannins. From biodynamically grown grapes with Respekt certification. Vegan. Drink or hold.

Wittmann's 2020 Aulerde GG proves again that this deep vineyard can have grand cru level in certain vintages, namely the dry and sunny ones. This one opens deep, clear and elegant, with a dusty chalk/clay bouquet intertwined with fine and citric spiciness. Juicy, spicy and piquant on the palate, with fine phenolic grip and a firm and salty, long and elegant finish, this is a terrific, expressive Aulerde and another highlight from this Westhofen terroir after Wittmann's 2019. Tasted in Wiesbaden at the end of August 2021. Drink 2025 - 2045.

The 2020 Kirchspiel GG opens very clear, bright and chalky on the spicy, Chablis-like nose that indicates a lovely complex Riesling from limestone rocks. Juicy, round and intense on the palate, this is a mouthful of wine with fine tannins and a generous nature. The finish is salty and vital, very long and complex and indicates great aging potential. Very ripe and very fine peach and citrus fruit, but the complex herb and spice notes are even more intense. Tightly wound and very pristine for this rather warm region, the spice returning at the super-long finish. From organically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but best from 2023.

Tasted from the vat on April 30, 2018. The 2017 Aulerde Riesling GG offers a pure and chalky bouquet of ripe yellow-fleshed, almost tropical fruits along with dashes of lemon juice. Pure and lean but full of tension on the palate, this is a dry, firm and elegant Aulerde with juicy fruit and lovely balance. Good length and salinity and fine grip. Promising.

Lavish yellow fruit, including some almost overripe pineapple. This just avoids tipping into opulence; there's healthy acidity and that lifts this monster dry riesling at the bold, herbal finish. From almost 70 year old vines. Biodynamically grown grapes. Respekt certified. Drink or hold.

Riesling in Australia.

Riesling is thought to have been introduced to New South Wales in the 1830s by the Macarthur's (pioneers of the Australian wool industry). German settlers brought the variety to the Barossa Valley in South Australia in the 1850's where the grape flourished. It's since found many new homes, such as Mt. Barker in Western Australia, the Clare Valley in South Australia, as well as Central and Southern Victoria. A tightrope of fruit and racy acidity when young, age-worthy examples develop honey and toast characteristics, sometimes accompanied by a distinct 'kerosene' note. Generally suited to cooler climates, examples from Grosset, Petaluma, Wilson Polish Hill, Dukes, Western Australia and Best's Great Western, Victoria are all worth seeking out.
