Marlborough sauvignon blanc with seriousness in its furrowed brow.
Grapefruit and green herbs, pickled beans and flint. Nice start. The palate is succulent, fine boned, porcelain textured, exceptionally long and oh so sleek. Bright flavours, passionfruit and sage leaf, some strong ‘minerally characters’ left undefined but there. Very good, on the old school rating charts. Drink 2020-2024.

2020 Telmo Rodriguez MR Mountain Wine Moscatel (500ml)Malaga, SPAIN$59. 99Bottle$719.88 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: CorkMálaga Mountain Wines are a very nearly forgotten style, grown on very steep schist slopes at an altitude of 500-1000m. The Moscatel grapes (Muscat of Alexandria) are grown and harvested from incredibly old bush vines at optimum ripeness, without any rot. Once picked, the grapes are dried for one week on drying racks to become partially raisined, before being pressed to stainless tank for fermentation.
Other Reviews....
The sweet white 2020 MR comes from a warm, dry and early vintage marked by a heat wave at the end of July. They believe 2020 is a very good year for sweet wines. This has 13.5% alcohol and 143 grams of sugar. It fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel vats, where it matured for 10 months. It's perfumed, expressive and with the character of Molino Real, with less complexity, with the notes of bay leaf and condensed milk, balanced, rich, expressive and long, not too sweet. 10,598 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2021. Drink 2022 - 2027.

2018 was the contrary of 2017, cooler, wet and with a very late cycle, and harvest staggered between end of August and mid October, which resulted in a fresher and more expressive 2018 MR with very good pH and acidity readings and 13.5% alcohol while retaining some 135 grams of sugar, similar parameters as the 2013. It had a spontaneous fermentation in small stainless steel vats until it stopped and was kept in stainless steel for 10 months before bottling. This is a lot more complete and complex than the 2017; it's balanced, which is very important, and it keeps the freshness, which is key in all wines but a lot more important in sweet wines. 9,536 half-liter bottles were filled in May 2019. Drink 2020 - 2025.

The island of Elba is the largest in the Tuscan archipelago and Italy’s third largest after Sicily and Sardinia. Tenuta La Chiusa overlooks the gulf of Portoferraio and takes its name from the walls which enclose its twenty hectares of vineyards and olive groves. Napoleon Bonaparte, who was twice exiled to the island, stayed at La Chiusa on two separate occasions.
A blend of Vermentino, Procanico (Trebbiano) and Ansonica (inzolia), fermented together and aged on lees in stainless for a few months with no malo. Brilliant pale straw colour with a watery hue. Etna Bianco from here is a field blend of Carricante, Catarratto, Inzolia, Grecanic and Minnella grapes sourced from vines aged between 25-60 years old. Carricante dominating the blend with roughly 65%.
Other Reviews....
The moment I put my nose to the glass, I questioned if this was just the entry-level 2020 Etna Bianco. Crushed stone and sea shells give way to nectarine, mint and a hint of vanilla bean to create a wildly attractive and Burgundian bouquet. On the palate, this speaks more in whispers, soft and subtle yet pleasantly sweet, contrasting ripe orchard fruits against vibrant acidity, and with gobs of minerality that sneakily collect toward the close. The medium-long finish is clean and refreshing, as hints of raw almond and pretty inner florals slowly taper off. This blend of 60% Carricante, 25% Catarratto, 10% Grecanico and 5% Minnella shines bright in the 2020 vintage. Drink 2021 - 2026.

2021 Terroir al Limit Priorat Terra de Cuques BlancPriorat, AUSTRALIA$79. 99Bottle$959.88 DozenABV: 13%Closure: CorkTerroir al Limit is Dominik Huber's hommage to the wines of Priorat before Wine Critics from the 90's were chasing high-octane wines. His restrained approach to winemaking has resulted in wines that speak more of finesse, purity, and freshness, showing that Priorat wines do not have to be heavy, thick, and oaky. The use of high-altitude, old-vine plots allows him to harvest ripe fruit with maximum freshness, coupled with the use of whole-bunch fermentation, Huber’s wines have an almost Burgundian-like shape and structure, generating vibrancy and succulence.
Huber has also shown that the whites of the region can be every bit as great as the reds. The 2021 Terra de Cuques is a blend of 90% Pedro Ximénez and 10% Moscatel de Alejandría (Muscat) from vineyards at 400 to 600m above sea level. JamesSuckling.comThe very recently bottled 2021 Terra de Cuques Blanc was produced with 90% Pedro Ximénez and 10% Muscat with a moderate 13% alcohol, the minimum required by the appellation. It's serious, with good freshness, a little reductive at first but then more expressive with abundant notes of pollen and a honeyed touch, with a little skin contact that gives it character and some notes of quince and fine tannins. There's finesse and elegance and it's very clean. They have food in mind when they do the wines, so there is a constant search for freshness. There is a good demand for whites, and they sell everything, but the planting of white vineyards is limited. Drink 2023 - 2030.

Emphasising purity and terroir rather than flor-aging notes, the winemaking involves direct pressing into large oak barrels, with no racking until the completion of fermentation, followed by a settling period in stainless-steel tanks before bottling.

Théo Dancer is the ambitious and tallented winemaker now heading up the family Domaine Vincent Dancer winery based in Chassagne-Montrachet. Like his father before him, Théo studied at Lycée Viticole de Beaune while working with his father part-time. He joined the domaine full-time in 2021 and is already making a significant impact. In addition to his work with his father, Théo has also taken on an exciting new project in the Mâconnais (Roc Breïa) as well as starting his own micro-négoce, sourcing fruit from several exciting vineyards across northern France.
Last year, Dancer’s Aligoté was from young vines in Nantoux in the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune, however from 2022 Dancer has started working with old vine Aligoté from Meursault. It’s made in the same way as the Vincent Dancer whites, crafted using large-format barrel over winter before resting in vat before bottling. There was only one racking, and the wine was bottled with only the barest whiff of sulphur.

2018 Thibaud Boudignon Savennieres Clos de la HutteLoire Valley, FRANCE$199. 00Bottle$2388.00 DozenABV: 12%Closure: CorkBased in Savennieres, Thibaud Boudignon is one of the new young stars of the Loire Valley. In addition to his prime plots in Savennieres, Thibaud also owns two small vineyards across the river on the south side of the Loire in the Anjou. Thibaud has worked with Philippe Charlopin in Gevrey Chambertin, Chateau Lafite Rothschild in Bordeaux (amongst others) and also in Australia before settling in the Loire, thereby building up a wealth of experience without having been born into a wine producing family. Working organically in the vineyards he harvests by hand making successive tries throughout each vineyard ending with yields that are much lower than the appellation rules allow. In the winery the grapes are whole bunch pressed with no settling and the juice is kept cold before starting a long slow fermentation. He vinifies with natural yeasts and ages the wines on lees with minimal SO2 in a mixture of barrels ranging from 300-600 litres.
Situated in the commune of La Possonnière, the Clos de la Hutte is an ancient religious site of 7 hectares, of which 2.6 are planted with vines. At the heart of this ancient monastery are vines produced from a massal selection of Chenin Blanc coming from the best domaines of the Loire. Vinification occurs in 50% oval demi muid, 25% in 320 liter cigars, and 25% in 500 liter barriques. The ageing lasts one year in wood and a minimum of 3 months in stainless steel.

The 2018 Savennières Clos de la Hutte offers an intense, complex and elegant nose that combines mineral depth and purity with the fruit generosity of the vintage. Still from very young vines—just seven years old—on solid schist and vinified in equal parts in 350- and 500-liter barrels (15% new), this is a full-bodied, intense and juicy yet pure, vital, surprisingly fresh and persistently mineral-driven Chenin with fine tannins from La Possonnière. Bottled with a moderate 12% stated alcohol but lots of intensity and structure. Natural cork. Tasted in January 2022. Drink 2024-2038.

Thibaud planted the vineyard only in 2014 and aged his 2018 Savennières Clos de Frémine in 350- and 500-liter barrels (10% new). The result is stunning. The wine opens with a dense and finely yeasty nose with deeper layers of crushed crystalline rocks, perfectly ripe and fleshy Chenin fruit and very discreet hints of mocha and nougat. Generous but playful, refined and elegant on the palate, this is a textural and stimulatingly salty young Savennières with lush fruit and lingering, palate-tickling and stimulating salinity that gives a crisp, pure, almost Riesling-like and bitter finish. It is a remarkably fresh and filigreed but textured Chenin for such a warm vintage. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in January 2022. Drink 2022-2032.

This tiny site of 0.5 ha on soils of clay over purple schist and granite lies high above Chateau de Varennes not far from La Roche aux Moines. Thibaud bought and renovated this plot in 2014. This small vineyard is enclosed by trees on all sides so it is a peaceful space where one hears only the birds. "La Vigne Cendrée", in spite of its small surface is an exceptional mosaic of terroir : purple schist, granite and clay silt. Because of the clay and the southern exposition, this wine is naturally richer. Half is aged in 226 litre burgundy barrels and half in foudre, with no new wood, for 12 months.
Other Reviews....
The 2018 Savennières La Vigne Cendrée (cinder or ash vine) comes from three-year-old vines in a small, south-facing vineyard with a complex terroir changing from purple schist to granite to clayey silt. It was vinified naturally in Burgundian barrels and in foudre for 12 months, with no new oak, and bottled with 12% alcohol. The wine opens with intense but also pure, delicate, floral-scented fruit that is absolutely alluring in its slatey fragrancy and spiciness. On the palate, this medium-weight Chenin is pure, clear, fresh, light-footed, remarkably filigreed and finessed but also dense and intense, celebrating delicate and elegant Chenin fruit. What a beautiful drinking pleasure! This is a frisky, vital, energetic, minerally grippy and stimulatingly tensioned, sustainably salty and palate-tickling Savennières in the leaner, fresher, classical style. A pretty fabulous result for such a young vineyard in such a dramatically dry and hot vintage. Natural cork. Tasted in January 2022. Drink 2022-2033.

Matured with 30% new oak, the 2021 Savennières Clos de la Hutte was made with grapes grown in clay topsoil with schists. It exhales a perfumed, precise bouquet with aromas of pineapple, lemon oil, spring flowers and spices. The full-bodied, seamless and layered, crystalline and pure, concentrated and mineral palate has a delicate core of fruit and a tense, saline finish. This pristine wine represents the essence of this great terroir. Drink 2023-2053.

Yohan Castaing - Wine Advocate (Jan 2024)The 2021 Savennières Clos de la Hutte is never the most aromatic, but after a year in bottle, it is starting to reveal a little more of its true self—but only just. It remains a tight cloud of wine that blossoms in the mouth, seamless and round. It possesses excellent texture, substance and richness yet manages it in a not-heavy manner. Nectarine and tangerine fruit flavors linger on the textured finish, which holds the mouth with an assured clasp. This is still not yet ready to drink, but its quality is there to see. It just needs more time to come out from its hiding place; just be a little more patient, if you can. Drink 2025-2040.

The 2022 Anjou Blanc from Thibaud Boudignon reveals a perfumed, exotic bouquet with aromas of green mango, pineapple, pear and spices intertwined with a touch of toast. More depth and fleshier than the 2021, it’s medium-bodied, perfectly balanced with a seamless, layered texture and a delicately bitter finish. 30,000 bottles produced. Drink 2023-2030.

Yohan Castaing - Wine Advocate (Jan 2024)The 2022 Anjou Blanc is very restrained, with a delicate perfume of chamomile, spearmint and nectarine. There's a round richness to the wine's mid-palate, but it feels oh-so quiet. It's not showy but restrained, elegant and fine-boned, which is quite the feat in this dry, warm year. Despite no malolactic, the acidity is relatively low analysis-wise, but you don't feel it; it remains finely poised. Drink 2025-2035.

Move over Luther Vandross, Thibaud Boudignon is in town and the Clos de la Hutte makes you want to slow dance with it. The 2020 is a wine that makes your shoulders drop such is its tranquility and sense of comfort in your mouth. It blooms in the mouth and does so without any sense of heaviness. The finish, scented with flowers and nectarines, is long, fragrant and textural. I hate using the word minerality as it means so many different things to people, but in my opinion, this has it in spades. It is incredible that the vines were only planted in 2011 on the schistous site on the grounds of a former monastery. Aged in larger format barrels, there's no sense of oakiness, allowing the purity of this wine to shine bright. Drink 2023-2042.

Unlike his Savennières, the fruit for Boudignon's 2020 Anjou Blanc is purchased. The result is a pure, clean wine with delectable purity. There are delicate flavors of just-ripe pineapple, citrus, nettles and a subtle hint of vanilla. It is fermented and aged in both 500-liter barrels and oval Stockinger 'cigars'. A line of acidity pulls this wine through to a refined conclusion. It can be approached now for its fine fruit but will go on. Drink 2022-2033.

The Clos de Frémine sits across a country lane from Clos de la Hutte, so it's a similar climate; however, at Clos de Frémine, the wine is lighter, more sandy with brighter light. The 2020 is a delicate, almost quiet wine that has a line of acidity that is like a taut wire. There's a silken, airy mouthfeel with delicate pineapple flavors and nectarine, which suffuses the mouth on the long, mineral finish. It gives the impression that it has a low pH due to its tangy acid and salinity, but the pH is actually at 3.6, which is rather high all things considered. Rather attractive. Drink 2022-2038.

The 2019 Clos de la Hutte is the site that spoke to Boudignon when he arrived in Savennières. Once the site of a monastery, it's not yet a religious experience drinking this, but it's not got far to go: there's a sense of expansion in the mouth, followed by impressive structure, showing its serious intentions and a sense that it's good enough to eat. There's an intriguing white floral note alongside pear, followed up with energetic acidity. Excellent texture and sapidity on the finish, providing length and structure. This wine has it all: delicacy and power, structure and refinement. Unfortunately, frosts in 2019 were not kind so there is very little of it to go around. Drink 2021 - 2035.

An elegant and pure style that offers a delightful silken texture. The 2019 Clos de Fremine floats delicately, almost as if you are tasting a cloud, despite containing plenty of intensity in its focused core of fruit. There's a burst of fresh acidity and a bristle of fine-grained texture; whether that's the tannin or the soil, it's there on the finish. I could tell you it tastes of apples and citrus, but this is a wine that seems to care less about fruit descriptors and more about the essence of its place. Drink 2021 - 2029.
