Sourced from 55-year-old vines in a chalky-limestone vineyard of less than a single hectare at 430m, this is the sole expression of Verdicchio from Stefano Zoli, who seeks wines that express the vintage, using minimal levels of sulphur and copper treatments. Hand-harvested, the wine is fermented in steel and concrete using native yeasts, spending five months ageing on the lees to provide extra complexity.
Decanter Panel Tasting.
Andy Howard MW: Floral nose, quite pungent. Driving acidity on the palate, a youthful Matelica, lots of freshness and vitality. Has the potential to develop very well.
Sara Bachiorri: A touch of oxidation on the nose, rich texture, and a touch of yeasty nuttiness on the palate, alongside bright acidity that helps the balance and complexity of the wine.
Michael Garner: Broad and fragrant nose, showing overtly floral notes and peach kernel. Juicy, fresh and vibrant flavours with positive and bold acidity. Long, steely and mineral-loaded.

2014 Stoneleigh Latitude Sauvignon BlancMarlborough, NEW ZEALAND$17. 99Bottle$215.88 DozenCellar: Drink now (2015)ABV: 13.5%Closure: StelvinProduced from an area known as the ‘Golden Mile’ located within the Marlborough region which is highly regarded for its outstanding growing conditions due to the fact that’s covered with stones left by an ancient riverbed. These stones soak up the warmth of the sun’s rays by day and radiate that heat to help ripen the grapes by night.
A component of this wine was fermented in a large aged wooden oak cuvee to add texture and weight. Brilliant water like colour with a faint greenish tinge around the edges and a watery hue. Pronounced aromas of passionfruit, ripe herbaceous gooseberry and citrus are followed by hints of grassy capsicum. Red volcanic ferrous soils with ample black basalt strewn amidst. Suits the later ripening Garganega, while screw cap promotes the freshness sought at this address. 6 ha. 60-70 year vines on a cooler site, rising to the creme of top quality sites as the climate warms. A richer wine than the younger Classico, but without the same sassy vitality. While the Classico is an unbeatable everyday wine, this is a complex wine demanding food and a little more contemplation. Mirabelle, apricot pith, a whiff of dried mango and plenty of smoky, pungent mineral grip, with dutiful freshness towing tenacious length. Drinkable now, but best from 2025.

2020 Suertes del Marques Trenzado BlancoTenerife, SPAIN$54. 99Bottle$659.88 DozenABV: 12%Closure: CorkSuertes is located on the island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands at the northern end in the Valle de La Orotova. The family have been farming vines for over 40 years but Suertes del Marques began in 2006. Owner Jonatan Garcia Lima runs the property and is part of a growing breed of intensely passionate young Spanish producers capitalising on the heritage vines and the volcanic soils to speak through his eloquent, mineral driven wines. Recently he has started working with talented young winemaker Luis Seabra. The estate has some incredibly old, low-yielding vines that produces wines with freshness, balance, purity of fruit, minerality and authentic terroir character.
Other Reviews....
The white 2020 Trenzado was produced with Listán Blanco (and 2% Torrontés Volcánico) grapes from six vineyards from local growers in the western part of the valley on poor volcanic soils harvested even earlier than ever (every year seems to be a record!). It fermented in 2,000-, 2,500- and 4,500-liter oak foudres and some 15% used 500-liter oak barrels, where it matured for 10 months. It's lower in alcohol, 12%, and has a low pH of 3.07 and 6.44 grams of acidity. Since 2016, the wine is different from the Vidonia because it's selected by soils; here, all are from the west of the Orotava Valley, closer to Los Realejos, where the soils are poorer and the wines tend to reduction. Putting your nose in the glass is like smelling a volcano, smoky and leesy. The palate is serious, fresh and harmonious, pungent, with tasty, almost salty notes. There is no heat at all in the wine, and the quality is great—the same as before but with more production. It should develop nicely in bottle. 29,000 bottles were produced, a big jump in volume. It was bottled in August 2021. Drink 2022 - 2027.

Luis Gutiérrez - Wine Advocate (Feb 2022)Listán Blanco. Named after the local trenzado plaited vine-training technique.
Very reduced nose – so reduced one assumes it’s intentional! Probably a love or loathe wine. It does have fruit and enormous marine influence with, presumably, the influence of the volcano towering overhead. Decidedly interesting though it’s actually quite painful on the tongue! Perhaps because of the acidity? Drink 2021-2025.

Other Reviews….
By the time I tasted the wines, the white 2019 Trenzado had already been bottled. 2019 is again a new record, the earliest harvest ever (the previous one was only 2017), a year of high temperatures and little rain, when yields from the Listán Blanco were down by 60%. This comes from six centenary cordón trenzado vineyards between 350 and 700 meters in altitude on basalt soils. The must fermented in two third year 4,500-liter oak foudres, two second year 2,500-liter oak foudres and a new 2,000-liter oak foudre with indigenous yeasts and matured for nine months. They still managed to keep moderate alcohol and very good freshness. At this young age, it has a reductive profile, a characteristic common to these volcanic whites. The soils from the west of the Orotava tend to reduce the wines more than the soils from the Suertes zone. 2019 was a very challenging year in the Canary Islands in general; here, the yields were very low, and the wine feels a little softer than the 2018, giving it a softer mouthfeel compared with the livelier 2018. Give it a few more months to absorb the reduction. 11,200 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2020. Drink 2021-2024.

Alc. 11.5% - 2011 Tardieu Laurent Hermitage Blanc Pre-Arrival OfferHermitage, Northern Rhone, FRANCE$67. 99Bottle$815.88 DozenABV: 13%Closure: Cork
Maison Tardieu Laurent has developed a solid following here in Australia in recent years. Their 2007s have been stunning across the board. In 2008, they dodged the bullets, providing us with some of the finest wines in what was a difficult vintage for the Southern Rhone, then they came back ever so strongly with the stunning 2009 and 2010 vintages in both North and South.
In 2011, Michel Tardieu describes the vintage as a "summery spring, springly summer and optimal autumn". The prospect of an early harvest waned with a slightly wet and fresher than usual July, hindering Grenache ripening, but when combined with fantastic autumnal weather, greatly advantaging Syrah and Mourvedre. The Northern part of the Rhone valley enjoyed a similar weather pattern and the fresh July turned out to be a blessing for beautifully aromatic Syrah. The wines display vibrant fruit and great typicity.
Given their remarkable quality and consistency, it's no surprise that globally, the wines of Tardieu Laurent are in bigger demand than ever. So much so that the Australian allocations for 2009 and 2010 were dramatically reduced. Quite simply, they're becoming increasingly difficult to procure. Consequently, we've got in early to secure a selection of the 2011s as direct imports, expected to arrive in January 2014. The prices are fantastic, with Hermitage below $80, but the quantities available are extremely limited and the wines will be sold on a first in first served basis. Don't delay!

(80% marsanne and 20% roussanne): Pale gold. Penetrating citrus pith, floral and mineral scents are complemented by deeper notes of toasty lees and smoke. Smells like an exotic white Burgundy. Finishes tangy and focused, with intense mineral and floral notes and excellent persistence.

Light limpid yellow. High-pitched tangerine, melon and violet aromas show impressive focus and vivacity. Silky and taut on entry, then deeper in the midpalate, offering palate-staining citrus and orchard fruit and honeydew flavors complemented by a subtle tarragon quality. Finishes with emphatic mineral cut and thrust, leaving a sexy floral note behind.

80/20% Awatere/Wairau Valley fruit; 10% goes into oak for ferment. Blackberry leaf, Thai basil and yellow guava. Blueberry flesh, fennel and chalk. The palate is weighted with ripe passionfruit, nectarine and honeysuckle. This is ripe and rich. It's densely packed and acidity trots in line, enabling a long, slippery finish. A hint of celery salt and raw cashew on the finish with a smattering of lacey skin texture. Lots of value here, for the price tag, and a memorable wine. Drink by 2026.

The wine was fermented in a combination of stainless steel tanks (80%) and old French oak (20%). The tank portions underwent slow, cool ferments to retain aromatics whilst the parcels fermented in barrel were carried out in large format neutral oak on full lees and stirred regularly. All parcels were given time on lees to provide texture and complexity. Certified Organic.

Marlborough sauvignon blanc with seriousness in its furrowed brow.
Grapefruit and green herbs, pickled beans and flint. Nice start. The palate is succulent, fine boned, porcelain textured, exceptionally long and oh so sleek. Bright flavours, passionfruit and sage leaf, some strong ‘minerally characters’ left undefined but there. Very good, on the old school rating charts. Drink 2020-2024.

2020 Telmo Rodriguez MR Mountain Wine Moscatel (500ml)Malaga, SPAIN$59. 99Bottle$719.88 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: CorkMálaga Mountain Wines are a very nearly forgotten style, grown on very steep schist slopes at an altitude of 500-1000m. The Moscatel grapes (Muscat of Alexandria) are grown and harvested from incredibly old bush vines at optimum ripeness, without any rot. Once picked, the grapes are dried for one week on drying racks to become partially raisined, before being pressed to stainless tank for fermentation.

The sweet white 2020 MR comes from a warm, dry and early vintage marked by a heat wave at the end of July. They believe 2020 is a very good year for sweet wines. This has 13.5% alcohol and 143 grams of sugar. It fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel vats, where it matured for 10 months. It's perfumed, expressive and with the character of Molino Real, with less complexity, with the notes of bay leaf and condensed milk, balanced, rich, expressive and long, not too sweet. 10,598 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2021. Drink 2022 - 2027.
