Bannockburn’s 1314 Chardonnay is made from a blend of fruit grown on their organically farmed vineyards; the oldest vines planted in 1976, through to the most recent 2016 planting. The fruit was whole-bunch pressed and settled overnight with wild yeast fermentation in French oak hogsheads of which approximately 20% is new, followed by partial malolactic fermentation. The wine was left on lees unstirred for 8 months prior to blending and bottling.
Brilliant pale straw colour with greenish tinted edges and a watery hue. Aromas of white peach and pear combine with subtle dried honey, roasted almond and spicy nougat notes. The mid weighted palate features rich peach, pear and dried honey flavours over a delicate crème brulee, roasted almond and spicy nougat back drop. Creamy textured and beautifully balanced it finishes with a lick of freshness and a long, refined aftertaste.

Specialising in Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, the Uley vineyard was established in 1983 and purchased by Lindsay Barratt in 1990. At just over 6 hectares in size, situated at an altitude of 510 to 550 meters above sea level in the Adelaide Hills sub region of Piccadilly Valley, it lies just a few hundred metres away from one of the region’s pioneering producers, Ashton Hills.
After three seasons of low crop levels, 2021 not only produced more bunches but also fruit of exceptional quality. The juice was wild fermented in French oak barriques, 27% new, and underwent 100% malolactic fermentation, with 11 months oak maturation.

    Outstanding Adelaide Hills Chardonnay.

Brilliant very pale straw colour with distinct highlights of green to the edges and a watery hue. Alluring white peach, nectarine, citrus and biscuity oak aromas drift from the glass complimented by hints of cashew, spicy nougat and gun flint. Rich, fleshy textured white peach and nectarine fruits are layered across the mid weighted palate with great intensity and drive. Adding further interest are subtle dried honey, biscuity oak, cashew, spicy nougat and infusions of gun flint. Excellent freshness with a gently cream tinged finish that shows outstanding length and persistence.

Fiano's capacity for a generous viscosity, plying the gums with textural intrigue, along with natural acid retention, even in a warm climate, is on full display. This is not to say that the acidity is shrill. Far from it. White flowers and a potpourri of herbs, driven by a whiff of pungent fennel, drive the aromatic spectrum. Bitter almond and apricot ensue. A jangle of solidly mineral melded to juicy acidity keep the wine purring along. Drink by 2018.

One-third fermented in old oak; matured on lees for six months. Arrives fully formed and in harmony, which can't easily be said of every 12-month-old gris. Part fermentation in oak has certainly broadened its flavour profile to incorporate a real depth of yellow apple, pear and white peach, together with honeysuckle, ginger cream and just a touch of preserved lemon bite. Its complexity is enhanced by a lovely textural quality. Fab for the price. Drink by 2025.

The only thing I don’t like about this fantastic chardonnay from Beechworth is the quality of the bottle image. I’ve ridden my bike past this vineyard a few hundred times but I’ve never turned in or indeed given it much thought. It looks unprepossessing. But geez, would ya cop a load of this. Stonefruit, nougat, pebbles and bams of citrus, juice and blossom. It’s seductive and it’s rich, but it’s also thrillingly long. It’s a “winemaker’s style”, which has been known to make wine drinkers run/ride a mile, but there’s power to the palate; flesh amid the sear of acidity. Stash some of this away for a couple of years and you are in clover. Love at first swig. Drink 2020-2026.

Right in the slot of the Bellarmine Riesling style. The floral bouquet of lemon, lime and apple blossom leads into a fresh, crisp palate with minerally acidity woven through the fruit and providing both length and drive. The wine needs 4-5 years to fully flower, but is already enticing.

Riesling vines were first planted as part of Henry Best’s ‘Nursery Block’ vineyard in the 1860s. Subsequent plantings followed in 1944 (since removed), 1978 and 1998. Always very flavoursome and very age worthy, the Best’s Great Western Rieslings are renown for their beautiful balance, texture and aromatics. The low yielding 2022 crop resulted in Riesling with a high concentration of flavour.

A delicious, highly flavoursome Best’s Riesling that shows plenty of zing.

Brilliant water like colour with greenish tinged edges. Drifting out of the glass with plenty of intensity are aromas of lime, red apple and orange blossom followed by hints of honeysuckle, citrus and minerals. Mouth watering flavours of lime, red apple and mandarin are delivered with terrific concentration over a delicate honeysuckle, talc and mineral background. Zesty acidity with a long, powerful dry finish that has plenty of zing to it.

The fruit for this 2022 Riesling is from the Great Western region in Victoria. The mother vines were planted in 1866 in the Nursery Block, a proud and very long history behind what is now a routinely great value wine. On the nose, salted lemon flesh, grapefruit, Granny Smith apples, talc and spring flowers adorn the aromas, while the palate falls in syncopated step. The palate has a deceptive richness that belies the light nose, while the finish lingers well beyond the wine itself. Wonderful, excellent and impressive. Drink 2023-2033.
