Lifted black raspberry and liquorice scents mix with scorched earth, dried herbs and pepper. Almost liqueur like in their level of concentration are black raspberry, black cherry and liquorice fruits. Opulent feel with ripe chewy tannins lending support. Not yet bottled, the 2018 Ventoux Les Ribes Du Vallat (70/30 Grenache and Syrah brought up in stainless steel) is similar to the 2017 and offers perfumed raspberry fruits, spice and floral notes as well as a rounded, textured, pure style on the palate. It’s going to be a smoking value geared for near-term drinking.

Pitch black heart with a very deep dark red black hue. Engulfing the nose are ripe red to black currant and liquorice aromas with hints of violet, subtlety toasted vanillin cedar, earthy graphite, black olive and spice notes also chiming in. Framing the rich, tightly knit blackcurrant, black cherry and liquorice fruits are graphite like tannins which impart a muscular feel. Notions of spicy vanillin cedar, dusty earth, black olive and crushed rock lurk underneath. Finishes tense and grippy yet refined and long. Requires some patience.

A blend of 99% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc, the 2020 Laroque is deep garnet-purple in color. A little subdued to begin, offering subtle notes of crushed rocks and damp soil, it opens out to a core of ripe black and red plums and fresh blackberries, plus a fragrant waft of lilacs. The full-bodied palate is bursting with taut, muscular black fruits and amazing tension, framed by ripe, rounded tannins, and finishing with great length and depth.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW - Wine Independent (Mar 2023)

The 2020 Laroque is even better than the en primeur sample. Dark and enveloping, with tons of class, Laroque is a winner. Succulent dark plum, gravel, spice, menthol, licorice and pipe tobacco give the 2020 tons of nuance. Laroque is class personified. Winemaker David Suire is doing important work here. Drink 2027-2045.

Antonio Galloni - Vinous (Dec 2022)

Aromas of sweet berries with herbs, wet earth and moss undertones as well as fresh mushrooms. Medium- to full-bodied with ultra-fine and creamy tannins and a lovely finish. It’s polished and refined. Drink after 2025, but already very pretty.

    James Suckling (Dec 2022)

From an estate that has been on an incredible run of late, largely due to the talents of director David Suire, the 2020 Château Laroque shows the cooler, limestone-driven style of the terroir beautifully and has a clean, focused style in its darker (almost blue) berry fruits as well as chalky minerality, violets, spice, and floral nuances. Medium-bodied on the palate, this focused, straight, remarkably pure Saint-Emilion has terrific mid-palate depth and a great finish. It needs to be hidden in the cellar for a solid 4-5 years if possible and is going to have 30 years of longevity. If drinking any time soon, give it an hour in a decanter.

    Jeb Dunnuck (Mar 2023)

Espresso, black cherry, licorice, coffee bean, chocolate and plum liqueur fill the perfume. The wine is rich, opulent, deep and fresh on the palate with layers of lushly-textured, black plums, chocolate, blueberries and blackberries. Perfectly balanced, hedonistic, concentrated and vibrant, with a long, expansive finish, this is in contention for the best vintage produced at Laroque yet. Drink from 2023-2042.

    ABV: 40%
Launched in 1992, this is one of Poland's super premium brands made exclusively from Stobrawa potatoes, mostly sourced from nearby the distillery to maximise freshness. The vodka is distilled four times following a six century old tradition. Founder and CEO, Tadeusz Dorda sums up the brand's philosophy: "We believe that the definition of vodka – “a flavorless, odorless, neutral spirit without distinctive character, aroma, taste or color” – is simply incorrect. We also reject the popular notion that all vodkas are the same. The flavor profile of our marquee product, Chopin Potato Vodka, is distinctively creamy with earthy notes and sets the standard in its category."

Master Distiller, Waldemar Durakiewicz, has worked with the Dorda family (who still own and run the company) since he graduated from university in 1978. Named after Poland's favourite son, the vodka is packaged in a frosted, cork-finished bottle which has since been copied by the likes of Belvedere Vodka and others.

Other reviews… Clear. Clean flinty aromas gives way to a supple, silky, light-to-medium bodied palate with confectioner's sugar, lemon zest and mineral flavors and a pointed peppery fade. A smooth and elegant vodka for martinis. 40%Alc./Vol.

The first sniffings unearth a soft, slightly sour and vegetal aroma; more time adds minor scents of ash and unsmoked cigarette. The bittersweet palate entry taste flashes on cocoa bean and sap; at midpalate toasty, sooty flavors of tobacco leaf, wood smoke, wood resin and vanilla are found. Ends up semisweet, succulent and roughly spirity. 85-89 points - wineenthusiast.com

“Potato vodkas have never been as well-received as their grain-based competitors, but Chopin—which appeared on the American market in 1997—should go a long way toward changing their lowbrow reputation. It's the smoothest vodka we tried, with a slight oiliness (specific to potato vodkas) that cut beautifully against the briny funk of black caviar and held its own against the thickest black bread I'd been able to find. We found Chopin itself to be 'slightly sweet' and 'well-rounded' with 'perhaps a hint of apple.' Chopin also had a 'medium-length, pleasing burn,' but 'very little aftertaste—it's remarkably clean.' To top it off, Chopin's tall frosted bottle was the prettiest we'd seen...the panel unanimously called Chopin 'far and away the best vodka we tried.” – Alex Abramovich, “Hit me With Your Best Shot”, Slate Magazine, 2004.

    $323.88 Dozen
    Cellar: Drink now - 8 Years (2022-2030)

Third generation winemakers Tom and Sam Barry of Jim Barry fame run the Clos Clare operation. This is their fifteenth vintage from Clos Clare's Riesling patch of 52 year old dry grown vines which adjoins the historic Jim Barry 'Florita' vineyard in Watervale.
Brilliant water like colour with a faint glimmer of green around the edges. Potent lemon and lime scents leap out of the glass followed by orange rind, Granny Smith apple, talc and steely mineral notes. Underscored by searing acidity the tightly coiled palate is adorned with lemon, lime and Granny Smith apple fruits that show great power. Notions of wet steel, chalky talc and flinty mineral characters also chime in. Tense, structured feel with a dry crunchy finish. The long snappy aftertaste delivered with laser like precision.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.

Particularly good intensity to be found in the 2022 Clare Valley Rieslings.
Lime, pink grapefruit, bath salts, a little spice, thyme and generally good waft of perfume. It’s intense, with a grapefruit pith and gin and tonic flavour, lime/lemon sorbet, a stony chalky feel, clean acidity, excellent length, with a pleasing quinine and lime zest tang to close. Classic Watervale. A terrific vintage for this wine. Drink 2022-2034+

Intensity and concentration seem to be the calling cards of 2022 Clare Valley riesling, and here's a case in point. Huge energy and velocity, this is tightly wound and racy with a filigree of lime, green apple, grapefruit, ginger, talc and green herbs oscillating between the bouquet and palate. Texture is gently chalky and mouth-watering, extending exceptionally long while keeping all that structure and architecture of fruit, herbal detail and minerality in a very compact frame. Above all, it's an incredibly refreshing and lively thing to drink. Yes, thanks. Drink by 2040.

Magnificent colour featuring an impenetrable inky black heart along with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Intense blackcurrant aromas are complimented by some liquorice, hints of dark chocolate, vanillin cedar, tobacco, scorched earth and spice notes. Medium to full bodied, a mix of rich red to dark fruits are layered across the medium to full bodied palate with a refined yet fleshy feel. Deep purple/ruby-hued, the 2019 Clos Manou has a terrific bouquet of ripe red and black fruits as well as cedar pencil, savory flowers, spice box, and tobacco. Gorgeously balanced and medium to full-bodied, with ripe, present tannins and both elegance and richness, it's one heck of an impressive Médoc readers should snatch up. It will easily keep for 10-15 years. Drink 2022-2037.

From an 18-hectare estate planted at a density of around 10,000 vines per hectare, the 2019 Clos Manou is a serious wine. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of dark berry fruit, cigar wrapper, licorice and espresso roast, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with terrific concentration, lively acids and plenty of ripe, powdery tannin that will reward a bit of bottle age. It's closed with an Ardeaseal technical cork as used by Burgundy's Domaine Ponsot among others. This estate merits a mention in any list of Bordeaux's finest under-the-radar producers. Drink 2025-2050.

Deep black dark red core with a dark red hue. Delightful red currant and mulberry scents stream out of the glass with some earth, subtle dried herb, light tobacco and spicy cedar notes also chiming in. Mid weighted, elegant and showing classic Bordeaux structure, the palate is layered with delicious red currant fruits which meld into a spicy cedar, dusty earth, tobacco and dried herb background. Awarded an MW of wine in 2020, winemaker Duane Coates is by his own admission, a 'heart over head' winemaker. Inclined to make wine from almost any interesting parcel of fruit made available to him, he tends to make accountants wince. For Duane, making great wine is not about business decisions; it’s about curiosity, passion, and a little bit of folly. His wines marry Australia’s richness of fruit with the savouriness and complexity of the old world.
Matured for 18 months in 20% new French oak. Impenetrable pitch black core with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Pronounced blackberry and liquorice top notes meld into black cherry, subtle dusty vanillin cedar, earthy dried herb and pepper scents. The medium to full bodied palate is flush with rich blackberry, liquorice and black cherry fruits which are complexed by scorched earth, vanillin cedar and peppered dried herb elements. Gorgeous fleshy mouthfeel with velvet like tannins leading into a long, ripe yet polished and highly refined conclusion.

This is fine, the clutch of reduction pressed ever so gently against a framework of oak, serving to infuse a sense of tension as much as a lattice of structure. Cooler climatic allusions of iodine, blue fruits, tapenade, salumi and violet. The drive, long and fresh, belying any sense of warm-climate origins. Little wonder given the top cru portions of Clarendon and Blewitt Springs fruit in the mix. Drink by 2030.

Coming from the commune of Ronca in the heart of Garganega country, Monte Ronca is a creation of local specialist, Antonio Fattori, an acknowledged Soave-master. Most the fruit for wines comes from the hills to the north of this commune, a specific site called Monte Calvarino, which peaks at 680 m (the inactive volcano from which the wine takes its name). At this altitude, this beautiful cool site provides a perfect environment for a higher grade, single site Soave. The hills around Monte Calvarino (in comparative terms to the region in general) are particularly steep, and from a viticultural perspective, pose some challenges. But to Antonio, this is critical to capture depth of flavour and structure, as the best expressions of Soave are never found on the valley floor where it gets too warm. Here, the ancient volcanic soils impart a flinty minerality to the hand-harvested fruit, while in the cellar, lees stirring and subtle oak ageing and varying levels of appassimento add a rich texture and further complexity to the wine.
Brilliant pale straw colour with a distinctive greenish tinge to the outskirts and a watery hue. Intense pear, red apple and lime aromas engulf the nostrils with some wet stone and fresh herb notes also evident. Delicious juicy ripe pear and red apple fruits flood every corner of the mouth with some lime and wet stone characters lingering underneath. Boasting terrific concentration, volume and brisk acidity it finishes long, textured and incredibly moreish. A fantastic example of Soave.

Fruit was sourced from both Corryton Burge’s and grower vineyards across southern and central Barossa. Fifty percent of the wine was aged in oak for 10 months, and the other half aged for a period of 18 months. Predominately American oak barrels were used along with about 30% French oak. Only a small percentage of new oak is used in this blend to ensure the vibrancy of the fruit is retained.
Dense inky black in colour with a deep dark red black hue. Heady dark plum, liquorice and blackberry scents fill the nostrils with some vanillin oak and spicy mocha notes also chiming in. Bold, rich and opulently textured the full bodied palate is awash with plush dark plum, blackberry and liquorice fruits which oversee a vanillin oak, scorched earth and spicy mocha back drop. The Te Muna Road vineyard, sited 7km from Martinborough town, is planted on an ancient dried riverbed of stony clay soils, and fruit for this wine is sourced from a higher terrace than the parcel-selection Aroha. The winemaking – by Julian Grounds – is similar; however, this sees more (34%) whole-bunch fruit and less (27%) new oak. Anne Krebiehl MW: Juicy, flowing, with dense red cherry, freshness, nothing overdone. Lovely now, will also last the distance. Very balanced. Hand picked and fermented in open-tops, before 18 months maturation in French barriques, mostly used. Highly regional aromas of baking spices and dried fruits meld with a contemporary whiff of florals and blueberry, affirmed by a pulpy mid-palate, a grind of pepper and considerable energy driving the finish. A full-weighted wine of a crunchy levity, ensuring that nothing gets too sweet or out of hand. Very good drinking and exceptional value. Drink by 2027.

A highly appealing Grenache based blend sourced from three adjoining blocks in the Gomersal district of the Barossa. Maturation takes place in old French oak barriques for a period of 12 months.
Deep dark red black colour with a dark red hue. Pronounced spicy dark raspberry, red liquorice and plum aromas fill the nostrils with some fragrant fresh herb, light scorched earth and pepper notes also evident. Rich juicy dark raspberry, plum and red liquorice fruits cast a plush textural feel across the medium to full bodied palate. Spicy dried herb, vanillin cedar and pepper characters linger in the background. Finishes fresh with velvety tannins and a long sumptuous aftertaste.

Will this be the single malt buy of the year? Probably, but don’t wait to find out. Get it now at this never to be repeated, freak clearance price.

Named for their emphasis on deeply coloured, sherry matured malts, the 'Darkness' series is the creation of Atom Brands, a sister company of a popular UK retailer. The core expression is this eight year old initially matured in ex-bourbon barrels before being transferred into custom-made first-fill Oloroso sherry octaves for three to six months. Finishing in small casks (80 litres or less) makes for a vastly increased surface area to volume ratio compared to the much larger sherry butts, leading to extra cask influence and more of those intense sherried notes we've all come to know and love. The liquid inside hails from an unnamed Speyside distillery that utilises worm tubs and two and a bit distillation – so whisky boffins should be able to narrow it down quite easily. This is set to be a continuous release in a range that was previously built around very limited editions, though the name of the game hasn't changed - big ol' helpings of sherried deliciousness await. The aromas develop with dates, fresh dried apricots and walnut slice moving towards moist fruit cake after extended air contact. Full bodied flavours of dark chocolate, tangy orange zest and fruit cake follow, rounded off with lovely oloroso character through the nutty, spiced-up finish. One quibble might be that the aftertaste pulls up slightly short, but in terms of overall intensity and flavour definition, Darkness delivers the goods. Bottling at a robust 47.8% ABV (instead of 40% like Glengoyne 10 or Macallan 12) means you get terrific bang for your buck. A winner of five gold medals at global competitions, it's also non-chill filtered without any additional colouring, and unlike its limited edition cousins, comes in a 700ml format.

Other reviews... This is a good sherried dram, which I think delivers against its name - I get those heavily sherried influences in the form of dark fruits, dark chocolate, and spice. While having a relatively younger age statement for scotch, those small octaves do have the effect of presenting a whisky where the flavours belie the age. This retails for around £50, which feels like a fair price for this good quality sherried whisky. - topwhiskies.com

Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Candied orange peels, chocolate peanuts, cooking spice warmth and some dried cherry. Palate: Amaretti biscuits, subtly toasty hints, powerful raisin and prune, just a touch of earthy oak lingers. Finish: Slightly oily with a hint of smoke, though chocolatey hints persist.

PHI is the 21st letter of the Ancient Greek alphabet and symbolises balance, harmony and proportion. The Lusatia Park vineyard was purchased by the De Bortoli family in 2016 having been previously the source of some of the finest Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays made in the Yarra Valley. Fermented with a combination of whole berries and whole bunches the resulting wine was matured in a mix of new and used French oak barriques for a period of 7 months.

A gorgeous Yarra Valley Pinot with four trophies to its name.

Semi translucent red to dark red colour with black toned edges and a light red hue. Perfumed nose with aromas of violets, red to dark cherries, strawberries, rhubarb and hints of clove blossoming out of the glass. Lending further complexity are forest floor, brambly cedar and spice notes. Gorgeously fruited and supple in its feel, a power wave of dark cherry, strawberry and subtle rhubarb are layered across the palate with superb depth. Silky smooth tannins with notions of brambly dried herbs, forest floor and spicy cedar also chiming in. Expansive with a long peacocks tail like finish that’s incredibly moreish. Winner of 4 trophies at the Victorian Wine Show.

A mix of vineyards and clones from the Lusatia Park vineyard in Woori Yallock. Bright cherry red. An immediately appealing wine with its dark cherry fruit, lavender and incense. This has good weight and depth without being heavy. A touch savoury, too, and the tannins are silky and long. Already a joy to drink, this will still be looking good four to six years from now. Drink by 2028.

Produced by the De Bortoli family from their Upper Yarra vineyard, Lusatia Park. Phi is the 21st letter of the ancient Greek alphabet and symbolises balance, harmony and proportion. It has great depth of brilliant red-purple colour and dark cherry, Campari and mixed spice aromas, the palate bright and fresh, intense and medium weighted, with plum pit flavours and a pleasant trace of bitterness to finish. It has good structure and would cellar for a few years, but it’s delicious now. True finesse and palate length.

Gloriously fruited, supple and refined in structure this a beautiful Margaret River blend that delivers great value.

A blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 5% Malbec that was matured in French oak barriques (20% new) for a period of 18 months. Totally opaque black dark red colour with a dark red hue. Attractive scents or red to black currant and mulberry show excellent intensity out of the glass as they morph into vanillin cedar, tobacco, earthy black olive and bay leaf notes along the way. Richly fruited, the mid weighted palate features supplely textured blackcurrant and mulberry fruits over a cedary tobacco, earthy black olive and spicy bay leaf back drop. Sourced from estate fruit in the Wairau Valley you’ll find star fruit, passion blossom, juicy pineapple and guava. The abundance of fruit continues on the palate with an electric line of acidity and sea spray finish. The dryness of the wine takes elegance to another dimension. Sith purity and drive, this is a triumph of a vintage and its magic is captured in the bottle. Drink now with raw scallop ceviche.

The appellation Jurançon is well-loved by sommeliers and found in all the best restaurants of France and around the world, yet sadly it remains off the radar for many wine lovers. Nearly 500 years ago the future King of France Henry IV, was baptised in Pau with the traditional garlic and a spoonful of Jurançon wine. That year was 1553 and just five years later in 1558 a small rural property was entered into the register of lands under the name Caussapé. And it was on this property in 1980, then his parents’ farm, that Henri Ramonteau established Domaine Cauhapé. Since those beginnings on just one hectare, Henri has built up the estate to today’s area of 47ha and become the most renowned producer of Jurançon wines, both dry and sweet.
A blend of 30% Gros Manseng, 30% Petit Manseng, 30% Camaralet, 5% Lauzet and 5% Courbu Blanc fermented in stainless steel and matured on lees for 5 months.
Bright straw colour with a faint glimmer of green around the outskirts and a watery hue. Exotic aromas of pineapple and guava mix with ripe yellow peach, citrus and distinct honeysuckle notes. Bursting with energy the palate features an exceptionally concentrated flavour profile of pineapple and guava fruits that show plenty of textural volume. Some ripe yellow peach, honeysuckle and wet slate characters lie underneath. Finishes dry with mouth watering acidity and a long rich aftertaste that carries a zesty freshness.

Cyril Audoin has turned in another superb performance in the 2020 vintage, delivering wines of perfume, energy and precision that transcend stereotypes of their appellation. Marsannay nourishes a number of high-quality domaines, and the village offers rich pickings for wine lovers, but Audoin might well be my favorite. What's more, anyone who laments rising prices in the Côte d'Or should take note of the terrific value this estate's wines represent, because quality at this level should honestly cost quite a bit more.
The 2020 Marsannay Clos du Roy Blanc is brilliant, revealing aromas of pear, lime zest, freshly baked bread, white flowers and buttery pastry. Medium to full-bodied, ample and satiny, its textural attack segues into a chiseled, electric mid-palate, concluding with a long, tangy finish. Drink 2023-2035.

Aromas of citrus oil, pear, vanilla pod and nutmeg preface the 2019 Marsannay Clos du Roy Blanc, a medium to full-bodied, layered and precise wine that's concentrated and tightly wound, with tangy acids and chalky structure. This derives from the upper part of the Clos du Roy, where the calcium-rich marls are suited to Chardonnay.

Run by Laurent Charvin this small family estate has vineyard holdings of 8 hectares in Chateauneuf du Pape and 13 hectares in Cotes du Rhone. Certified organic the average age of the vines is over 50 years old. These Grenache based wines follow traditional winemaking techniques with no de-stemming and all aging takes place in cement takes. Charvin’s Côtes du Rhône is regularly rated as one of the very best from this area and perhaps it is not surprising as the vines for this cuvee border directly on to the appellation for Chateauneuf du Pape in the northern sector where they are located.
The 2020 is an interesting contrast in style to the rich, powerful 2019 vintage being brighter and fresher with more red fruits.

Flooded with delicious red to dark fruits, this delicious Cotes du Rhone is rich and polished yet also remarkably fresh with a muscular edge.

Rasteau's 880 hectares of vines are planted on marl and red and yellow clay soils over sandstone with rounded stones covering some sectors, which in heatwave vintages act like health insurance against hydric stress. By law, the Grenache component in the dry red blends must be 50% minimum, with Syrah and/or Mourvedre 20% minimum and other grape varieties of the appellation tolerated up to 20%. In 2010 the Rasteau AOC was created allowing the wines to be named after the village, dropping the Cotes-du-Rhone tag and joining the likes of Chateauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas at the pinnacle of the wine hierarchy in the Southern Rhone.

    A Rich Blockbuster Rasteau.

A blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah sourced from vines over 60 years old and 40 years old respectively. The Syrah component is aged in old 225 litre barrels whilst the Grenache is aged in concrete vats for a period of 15 months.
Deep dark red black colour with a dark red hue. Elevated black raspberry and liquorice aromas infused with pepper are trailed by black cherry, scorched earth, dried herb and graphite notes. Rich and power packed, the palate is engulfed with succulent black raspberry, liquorice and black cherry fruits which sit atop a scorched earth, subtle graphite, dried meat and peppered herb back drop. Robust yet opulent feel with a muscular tannin structure that is nonetheless well integrated. Outstanding torque with a long pepper laced pedal to the metal finish.

This gorgeous 100% Grenache opens with a deep dark red black tinged colour and dark red hue. Wafting out of the glass are heady scents of black raspberries, liquorice and black cherries which are interwoven with dried meat, scorched earth and peppered herb notes. Concentrated and powerful, waves of rich, super succulent black raspberry, liquorice and black cherry fruits swamp every corner of the mouth. Infusions of provincial herbs, scorched earth, incense like characters and peppered meats lie underneath. Ripe chewy tannins lend some muscle to what is otherwise a lavish feel. Concludes very long and seductive.

All Grenache from very old vines and the clay soils of the Les Fouquesses lieu-dit, the 2020 Rasteau Héritage 1924 reveals a vivid purple/ruby hue to go with perfumed aromatics of kirsch liqueur, ground pepper, and flowery incense. It's medium to full-bodied, pure, balanced, and has a seamless mouthfeel. Raised all in concrete tank, this naked expression of Grenache is going to drink beautifully for a decade. Drink 2023-2033.

Totally opaque black dark red colour with a dark red hue. The nose is charged with black raspberry and liquorice aromas which are laced with fresh herb and white pepper. Hints of graphite and spicy black olive also chime in. The rich, concentrated palate is full in body but far from over the top. Delivered with prodigious power are black raspberry and liquorice fruits which are underpinned by a vibrant freshness and muscular tannin structure. Infusions of wild herbs, spice and white pepper flow onto the back half. Concludes with a long peppery aftertaste that combines juicy fruit with a sturdy feel.

Lots of kirsch, blackberry, leather, and garrigue notes emerge from the 2019 Rasteau Heritage 1924, a 100% Grenache release that was all destemmed and brought up in concrete, seeing no wood whatsoever. This medium to full-bodied, silky, elegant, lightly textured beauty has terrific purity, light tannins, and outstanding length. It’s more elegant and seamless than some of the previous vintages, which brought a touch more power and opulence, but I suspect it will gain richness with another year in bottle and drink nicely for 5-7 years. Drink 2023-2030.

Domaine du Pegau Reserve is produced from 85% Grenache, 9% Syrah and 4% Mourvedre, Counoise and other varieties. While previously Cuvee Laurence was made from a specific barrel selection, today the wine is same blend as the Reserve except it has been aged in barrel for a longer period of time. The grapes are not destemmed, and the natural yeast fermentation is completed in traditional, cement vats before ageing in old, French oak barrels for an average of 40 months.
According to Laurence Feraud, the wine is aged to approximate what might happen with Pegau Reserve after ten years of aging. On average, close to 650 cases are produced each vintage of Domaine du Pegau Cuvee Laurence.
Black as night heart with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Wafting out of the glass are ripe heady scents of black raspberry, liquorice, blackberry and black cherry which meld into scorched earth, dried meats, hints of leather and pepper. Rich black cherry, liquorice and black raspberry fruits are backed by a muscular tannin structure. Notions of scorched earth, leather and peppered dried meats add a further nuance to the back palate. Enveloping, warm and spicy nose with an extremely wide spectrum of aromas, ranging from dried rose to graphite via thyme and smoked bacon. Very powerful, concentrated and earthy, yet there’s brightness in there that makes it shine, Stunningly fine tannins power the super-long finish. Drink or hold.

I loved the 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Laurence. It has a more classic style in its Provençal aromas and flavors of peppery herbs, garrigue, sandalwood, and charcuterie, with medium to full-bodied richness and depth on the palate. It’s a classic, complex, gorgeous wine in the making.

Domaine Pegau Cuvee A Tempo is made from a blend of equal parts, Grenache Blanc, Clairette and Roussanne. The wine comes from parcels that are farmed using 100% organic farming techniques, and made its debut with the 2014 vintage. Vinification and ageing is performed in a combination of French oak barrels, stainless steel tanks and cement egg shaped vats. The production is quite small, with about 100 cases being produced in total each year.
Bright pale straw core with straw tinged edges and a watery hue. Intense ripe pear aromas intermix with hints of peach, dried honey and spicy apricot. Subtle crème brulee, citrus and wet stone notes are also evident. Rich spicy pear and apricot fruits are complimented by honeysuckle, crème brulee and citrus elements. Despite being texturally full it finishes with excellent freshness and a lingering stony minerality on the long refined aftertaste.

Bottled in May, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée A Tempo Blanc is another incredible white from this estate. More melon, exotic tropical, and even hints of pear-like fruits as well as green almond and chalky mineral notes define the nose, and it’s racy and pure on the palate, with hints of licorice and salty minerality, bright acidity, a laser focused texture, and a great finish. The first hectare of vines was planted on the Domaine Grand Nicolet property in 1875. The winery was established in 1926 and further plantings of Grenache and Carignan were made, replacing cereal crops. The present owner, Jean Pierre Bertrand purchased the Estate in 1999 which has now expanded to 70 acres of vines.
A blend of 60% Grenache, 25% Syrah & 15% Mourvedre sourced from vines with an average age of 45 years with some of the Grenache vines more than 90 years old. A portion of the Syrah is aged in 2-3 year old barrels for 12 months with the balance matured in concrete tank vats for 18 months.

A long time direct import, Domaine les Aphillanthes is located in the tiny village of Travaillan, just to the north of Châteauneuf du Pape, and is run by Daniel Boulle. Undeniably rich, chewy and powerful renowned Rhone wine critic Jeb Dunnuck describes them as ‘some of the best Cotes du Rhones out there…’.
A blend of 92% Grenache, 7% Mourvedre and 1% Carignan produced from vines planted in 1921 that yield little, but deliver incredibly concentrated fruit. Very deep dark red black in colour with a dark red hue. Fragrant spicy red to dark raspberry and red cherry scents infused with fresh herbs are married to hints of graphite, dried meats and blackpepper. Rich pepper laced red raspberry, liquorice and dark cherry fruits show ample power and freshness across the medium to full bodied palate. Provincial herb, crushed volcanic rock and spicy dried meat accents add further nuance. Lending a meaty, robust like feel is bright acidity and muscular tannins. Blackpepper laden, it finishes long and juicy yet a touch grippy.

The 2019 Rasteau Cuvée 1921 comes from ancient vines (planted in 1921) and is 92% Grenache, 7% Mourvedre, and 1% Carignan, which I believe was raised in tank. It takes plenty of air to open up and offers a striking Provençal bouquet of sweet black cherries, flowery incense, peppery garrigue, lavender, and saddle leather. It actually reminds me of walking through a street market in Vaison-La-Romaine in the south of France with its complex, incredibly satisfying Provençal aromatics. These characteristics all carry over to the palate, where the wine is medium to full-bodied, has a round, layered mouthfeel, ripe yet present tannins, and a great finish. It doesn't have the sheer elegance of, say, the 2016 or 2010, but it's a beauty. Give it a decant if drinking any time soon. It should put a smile on your face any time over the coming decade or more. Drink 2023-2034.
