Blended / Vatted Malt

A blended malt, formerly called a vatted malt, or pure malt, is a blend of different single malt whiskies from different distilleries, as opposed to single malt whisky, which is the blending of different casks or batches from the same distillery. Blended malts are typically soft textured, delicious, flavourful whiskies with broad appeal. Johnnie Walker Green has long been a benchmark, but you'll find a good cross-section of styles represented here, many of which we taste and rate to further guide your purchase. The name 'Schivas' is derived from the old Gaelic 'seimh as', meaning 'the narrow place.' It perfectly describes the spot where a medieval castle once stood, at a narrow stretch of the River Ythan, in Aberdeenshire in the North East of Scotland. In 1950, Chivas Brothers began the search for a secure supply of fine malt whisky. Strathisla Distillery in Keith, the oldest and most beautiful distillery in the Highlands, was the obvious choice. The distillery was purchased and now the highly praised Strathisla Single Malt Scotch Whisky lies at the heart of the Chivas Regal blend. Aged for a minimum of 12 years, Chivas is distinguished by its light, lingering aroma, full, smooth, balanced palate with a hint of smoke - very subtle and complex. 'A good whisky blender knows intimately the character of all the whiskies he uses,' says Chivas's Master Blender Colin Scott. 'They are as unique as people. Some are subtle, some are bolder. My job is to produce a distinctive blend of whisky of the highest possible quality which is consistent in flavor and bouquet from year to year. I would describe Chivas Regal as smooth, with a honeyed richness, round and full-bodied, slightly smoky with a long, lingering finish. The classic, premium Scotch whisky.'

Other reviews... Nose: Distinct marshmallow. Peach blossom. Faint cocoa. Palate: Light hazelnuts. Cream. Buttercups. Violets. Lavender. Herbal. Finish: A little snappy and aggressive. Comment: The flavours tail off, as though the whisky is going to sleep. Smooth and easy, but lacks livliness. Springtime never quite blossoms into summer..  Rating: 75 -  Michael Jackson, www.whiskymag.com

Brilliant golden amber color. A somewhat closed nose of light caramel, toast, and vapor. A soft, buoyant entry leads to a off-dry, somewhat thin light-to medium-bodied palate with sweet toasty malt, peppery spice, and a brush of grain alcohol. Finishes dryly with a quick, hot fade. International Review of Spirits Award: Bronze Medal 83 points (Recommended) - tastings.com

It looks like a Blended Malt offering is going to become part of every annual release following the success of the 'Collectivum'. Diageo have endless potential to create these interesting expressions with their massive array of 27 distilleries and huge blending team working on all the Johnnie Walkers et al. They've gone full coastal this year, combining six distilleries: Caol Ila, Clynelish, Inchgower, Lagavulin, Oban and Talisker. The whiskies are on the younger side and were matured in first fill oak which makes for a vibrant, energetic dram. Tasted at the Diageo launch, we thought this was pretty satisfying, with a lovely oily texture, brooding smokiness and loads of pepper. A little water transforms the profile to salted caramel ice cream.

Other reviews... Sun-bleached driftwood, iodine, curry spices, and hot asphalt, with a highly charged, aromatic smokiness: a combination of peat kiln and crackling moorland blaze. There is serenity too, with soft cream, ripe citrus, and key lime pie. Thick and glossy, it’s an intense, mouth-puckering, cask-strength prospect. Chocolate, cinnamon, and mint collide with a barrage of clove and barrel char. Booming spices reverberate in the grip of an extremely long finish.

    Bottle
    $1680.00 Dozen
    ABV: 45%

Tasting note: The Great Road West's co-ordinates on the label point towards Edrington's HQ, which would suggest it includes spirit from Macallan, Highland Park and Glenrothes. Beautiful copper penny colour. Ugg boots and tempered malty sweetness on the nose, the sherry input well managed as low key spice and fruit cake. A delicate waxiness accompanies the sherry laced malt; Full and rounded through the middle stages, then sleek and long with spiced raisin cake suggested at the finish. A sense of 'breed' and old-world class to this. Something akin to very good Mannochmore or Glen Elgin (or Glenrothes or Macallan!) Stays with you. 45% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from Claxton's... Nose: Sweet Sherry and oak in harmony. Demerara sugar with raisins. Marzipan. Palate: Sweet stewed fruits at first before the oak and Sherry notes cuts through. Finish: Rich and spicy finish with a hint of raisins in syrup on the aftertaste.

The second tea-spooned malt from Claxton's collection comes from a mystery Campbeltown distiller. To our knowledge, Kilkerran are yet to sell to independents so it's either Springbank or Glen Scotia. Matured in a PX sherry hogshead, a sedate coastal whiff competes with a winey overlay of chocolate, prunes, dried figs and apricots. Young yet seductive, this starts out fresh and lively and ends with a decadent injection of sherried sweetness; hints of ginger biscuit, raisin cake and dark chocolate carry the finish. Very satisfying after dinner malt. 50% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

    Islay, SCOTLAND
    $110. 00
    Bottle
    $1320.00 Dozen
    ABV: 50%
Tasting note: A teaspooned malt from a legendary South Islay producer. If you've never heard of teaspooning, it's when an indie bottler buys a cask, but the distillery doesn't want their name on the label. As a control, a teaspoon of another malt is added. By law, this procedure prevents buyers from bottling the cask(s) under the official distillery name - or as single malt Scotch whisky - hence the classification as a Blended Malt. Youthful straw gold in colour, the nose offers a high definition Islay sniff with lifted, peppery openings, becoming more maritime and minerally; empty sea shells, pickled citrus and menthol tobacco; big peat gains an earthy edge after 3-4 minutes air contact. Solid ABV and no shortage of phenols, but the sherry has a rounding effect. Smoked citrus, light brine and eucalyptus enliven the finish. Official age statements from this distillery have been wimpish of late. This fills a void. 50% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

For many, the most intriguing whisky in this year's line up.

Dr Nick Morgan, Diageo’s Head of Whisky Outreach has stated he's particularly keen to see the response to the new Collectivum XXVIII: An ambitious blending excercise utilising whiskies from all 28 of Diageo's working single malt distilleries. There's no confirmation that Collectivum XXVIII will be repeated. This fact combined with a very accessible price point should make it a strong choice for collectors.

The full breakdown includes malts from Auchroisk, Benrinnes, Blair Athol, Caol Ila, Cardhu, Clynelish, Cragganmore, Dailuaine, Dalwhinnie, Dufftown, Glendullan, Glen Elgin, Glenkinchie, Glenlossie, Glen Ord, Glen Spey, Inchgower, Knockando, Lagavulin, Linkwood, Mannochmore, Mortlach, Oban, Roseisle, Royal Lochnagar, Strathmill, Talisker and Teaninich. Serge Valentin notes the inclusion of Roseisle, "...which suggests that this blended malt cannot be older than 6 years, as Roseisle Distillery was inaugurated on October 11, 2010. Are you following me?" Regardless of age, blended malts can be as exciting as any great Single Malt. Serge's verdict? "...it's possibly the best 6yo ever. Ha!" See review below.

Tasting note: Burnished gold. Pillowy soft on the nose - puffs of shortbread and sponge cake, faint peat, beeswax and emerging sweet, fruity malt in its purest form imaginable. There’s a sense of elegance here. In the mouth, it’s medium bodied with notes of fruit cremes, honey-laced malt (beeswax) and vanilla framed by a lively and tangy freshness. Outstanding balance. Mildly waxy and nutty through the finish with lingering orchard fruits. Very good, but needs time to open up. Don't hurry this one. 57.3% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews… An incredibly complex creation... this has minted toffee, gummy bears, raw gooseberry, fresh whole grain bread, and earthy spices shaken over sweet banoffee pie. Rich fruit, cocoa, granular white chocolate, dark citrus, waxy caramel bars, nutmeg, cinnamon, and bitter dark chocolate. Water stimulates green fruit notes. A beautiful sugared almond note materializes with sweet fudge and dried apple dipped in chocolate. 94 points

This is advertised as a blend of all 28 operational malt distilleries owned by Diageo – not a 28yo mind you - which implies that there’s some Roseisle, which suggests that this blended malt cannot be older than 6, as Roseisle Distillery was inaugurated on October 11, 2010. Are you following me? Colour: gold. Nose: everybody knows that Diageo have great blenders who do not only work with spreadsheets, and it seems that this is more evidence. Starts perfectly cake-y, with some custard, apple pie, beeswax, then hints of beef bouillon (sherry?) and fresh cigars, then a mossy side, as well as mushrooms. We knew this was going to be well composed, didn’t we. With water: very, and I mean very malty. Some spicy oak and some paraffin in the background. Mouth (neat): wow! It’s a tad ‘jumbled’ at first, which is normal, but there are leading malts in there, possibly Clynelish for example, and clarity is soon to appear. It’s not impossible that they’ve added quite some Talisker too, if you ask me. The whole is excellent, getting peatier by the second. Good pepper, good oranges. With water: swims very well, citrus up, peppermint up as well. Finish: long, rather sharp, keeping your palate fresh. Smoky aftertaste. Comments: possibly the best 6yo ever. Ha!

Compass Box is a specialist Scotch whisky company founded in 2000 devoted to making some of Scotland's most unique whiskies through the art of blending. John Glaser, Whisky Blender & Company Founder, runs Compass Box in a similar fashion to fine wine negociants. The company chooses individual casks of whisky from different distilleries that offer complementary sets of flavours. They then carefully blend these casks in small batches to make proprietary whiskies. A range of types of Scotch whisky are bottled: malt whiskies, grain whisky, malt & grain blends from twelve distilleries across Scotland. Compass Box is also renowned for having (arguably) the industry’s highest quality standards for oak cask selection. When one considers that oak is responsible for up to 70% of the flavour of a mature whisky, one understands their mania. Only 100% American oak is used (predominantly first-fill casks). The colour of all the Compass Box whiskies is the natural colour of the whiskies from the casks. No caramel colouring is added. The whiskies are also not chill filtered (a cosemtic process which strips flavour and texture from the whisky). As John Glaser says, “Hazy whisky is a good sign that the whisky maker wants you to taste everything the whisky has to offer.” These are indeed alluring whiskies for the free-thinking enthusiast. Limited stocks have arrived in Australia. Each is a must try.

This whisky, like all vatted malts, is made by marrying 100% single malt whiskies from different distilleries. Compass Box Eleuthera Malt is a combination of 18 year old Glenlossie, 12 year old Caol Ila and 12 year old Clynelish single malt whiskies. Eleuthera was awarded a double gold medal at the prestigious San Francisco World Spirit’s Competition.

Tasting note: Nose: A hearty whiff of marine air with phenolic notes in the background. White currant and lemon zest. Tender vanilla echoes. Palate: Silky. Coating. Oily mouthfeel. Sea lettuce. Finish: Big, warm, exploding waves of spices. Water disciplines the outburst. Comment: Hold your glass to your ear and listen to water lapping against the tarred boat hull.46% Alc./Vol.Rating: 85 - tasting note sourced from Martine Nouet, www.whiskymag.com

The whisky expresses smartly complex aromas of smoky bonfire smothered with peat, with notes of tar, olives, freshly ground pepper, and seaweed. A sweet maltiness (from the Ardmore?) binds the flavors together. On the palate, the whisky begins sweet, then the powerful peat smoke emerges, yielding to olives, peppery spices, and seaweed. The finish is long and powerful with the peat smoke again emerging and lingering on seemingly forever. A monster indeed. This whisky’s complexity demonstrates the virtues of vatting. Many smoky whiskies have nothing else going on behind the cloak of smoke. This one does. 92 points -  The Malt Advocate

    $119. 99

    $1439.88 Dozen
    ABV: 44.1%
Tasting note: [15ml sample] Including components from Caol Ila, Bunnahabhain, Laphroaig, Mortlach and Benrinnes, post blending this was finished in a single refilled sherry cask. Beyond the sedate though seamless aromatics, it's a highly accessible malt that pretty much does what the label says: The balance of vanilla, toasty cereals, soft sweet phenols and light oils at medium concentration is near perfect. Cocoa, light citrus and vanilla follow, becoming drier and more ashy. A pussycat that defines ‘easy drinking’. 570 bottles. 44.1% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the bottlers... Expect smoked oysters with tobaccos and old leather. A complex and sweet malt with dried fruits, bonfire smoke and an oily texture. A soft and gentle finish as the peat fades.

An older bottling of one of the staple, age statement blends from the early/mid 2000s.

This distinguished, deluxe Scotch is a subtle blend of 15 year old whiskies considered as special as the uniquely designed 'pinched' bottle that holds it. The container was actually the world's second trademark bottle design, officially registered in 1919 - Coca Cola's was the first. The wire netting around the bottle, now merely decorative, was originally used to keep the cork from expanding out in extremes of temperature.

Tasting Note: Medium amber in colour, this is an elegant scotch with some complexity, wood aromatics and a light palate that finishes dry. Glenkinchie, a lowland distillery features strongly in the blend and is no doubt responsible for a degree of Dimple's softness.

Other reviews... A sturdier dram than before, but over-sweet and still fails to get my pulse racing. Rating: 79- Jim Murrays Whisky Bible 2006.

To our knowledge, this is the oldest Big Peat ever released, and probably one of the oldest vatted malts on the market. Bottled in 2017 at what is presumably cask strength, the outturn was around 3000 bottles. Because it's much older than most other Big Peats, this won't be as assertive or as smokey as the younger editions. 52.1%% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... They may be milking the cow here, but all the bovines seem to be most happy with that, so I can’t see why anyone not totally insane should complain. Certainly not this humble amateur taster! By the way, if it’s a 1992, there cannot be any Port Ellen inside, am I not right? Colour: pale gold. Nose: it is a rather leafy, grassy peat, dry and pretty camphory, with a wee buttery side, some fresh almonds, and all things related to a walk on Islay under some heavy shower. So yeah, any day. Damp textiles, raw wool, all that. With water: fermentary, definitely. Smoked yoghurt, perhaps? Mouth (neat): it’s true that this is extremely good. Perhaps a little simple, as if all peaters had annihilated each other in some kind of way, but this lemon plus seawater plus smoke combination just works. With water: a little more sweetness, smoked apple juice, iodine, our friends the whelks… Finish: medium, rather easy going and gentle, cidery… Saltier aftertaste. Comments: excellent, just a tad gentle, perhaps. I’m not sure anyone should add any waters, in fact. No, better not, I don’t think it’s a great swimmer. I’m even wondering if I don’t like the brighter youngsters a little better, to tell you the truth… 83 points - whiskyfun.com

The Big Peat label ran a theme of Christmas presentations that started (at least) as far back as 2013. The annual limited editions were collected for their fun festive look but also developed a reputation as high-class blends with some serious Islay malts in the mix. We don't believe the blend changed dramatically from year to year, so you can refer to whiskyfun's notes below to get an idea of the style and quality on offer. 55.7% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... [2013 edition tasted] As usual, this baby contains Bowmore, Caol Ila, Ardbeg and Port Ellen. Christmas? I know, I'm late... Colour: white wine. Nose: there must be quite a few young casks in the vatting - yup, obviously not the Port Ellen - because there's a lot of smoked porridge, smoked water, even dairy cream... Sour smokes, I'd say. A lot, really a lot of brine too. Can you smoke pickled gherkins? With water: raw tarry peat, fisherman's ropes, pitch. Mouth (neat): ultra-young! Raw peat, wheelbarrows of pears (sign of youth) and a blend of apple juice and liquid tar. Quite extreme. With water: smoked seawater, cold lapsang souchong tea... Finish: long, very tarry. Tar liqueur, that's it. Comments: I know heavy peaters can be great at a very young age, and this is another fine example, but a little more polishing would have been welcome. Now, it does what it says on the tin, doesn't it. 83 points - whiskyfun.com

Glasgow-based Douglas Laing & Co are independent bottlers and blenders headed by brothers, Fred and Stewart Laing. The company has traditionally specialised in blending super-premium whiskies for Far East markets. The brothers succeeded their father, Fred Douglas, who founded the company in 1948 and they’ve not let their Dad down over the past 25 years, significantly expanding the enterprise. Key to their success has been the management and marketing of the vast stocks of old and rare malts the family has built up over the last half century.

In recent decades, one of the company’s most successful brands has been 'Big Peat', a vatted Islay malt containing spirit from Ardbeg, Caol Ila, Bowmore and Port Ellen. The entry level bottlings were batch releases. The label gained respect when it was awarded the top prize in its category at the World Whisky Awards 2010, and a year later, Jim Murray's Blended Malt of the Year. A slew of expressions have followed including this special once-off for French retailer, La Maison Du Whisky, celebrating their 60th Anniversary. 50% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

An unusual 500ml release bottled for the Mediterranean market. Interestingly bottled at 48%, much lower than their usual cask strength releases. Potentially a more 'chill' expression to suit the Mediterranean holiday dynamic? We have one of the 1,500 bottles released. 48% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

54.9% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... As usual, this baby contains Bowmore, Caol Ila, Ardbeg and Port Ellen.

Lovers of Island styles will revel in the Laing's latest Island Blended Malt. Formerly known as 'Rock Oyster', which already set the bar high, the new presentation holds well-aged malts from the likes of Jura, Arran, Orkney and Islay combining richness with maritime style. The outturn is reported to be around 4,200 bottles. As with the rest of the series, there's zero chill filtration. 46.8% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... "We're starting with some charcoal, rock pools and salty sea spray, followed by hints of polished leather and sal ammoniac, but also damp forest floor. The citrus is rather pleasant too. The palate is a little less impressive with a slight sour and rubber-y note. More peaty than you'd expect at this age as well." 89 points - distiller.com

    ABV: 56.1%
Established in 1948, independent Scotch whisky specialist, Douglas Laing & Co have released a brand new Island inspired “Vatted” Malt – Rock Oyster.

There are two versions - one bottled at 46.8% and another at cask strength. Both whiskies demonstrate a truly maritime profile with aromas and flavours of sea-salt, sweet peat, smoke, honey and pepper. Containing top notch Whiskies from Scotland’s islands, including those distilled on Islay, Arran, Orkney and Jura, it’s no wonder Master Blender Fred Laing says “If I could select just one dram to transport the Whisky enthusiast to the Islands of Scotland, it would be this!"

Notes from the bottler... Anticipate a big peat hit full of Islay phenols, iodine and coal dust, with a shake of pepper softening to a distinct honey sweetness from the Arran casks. The Isle of Jura brings waves of citrus and barley to the mix, and Orkney fetches up some salt from the deep.

For many years, Duncan Taylor has experimented in the use of differing cask sizes for the maturation of Single Malt and Single Grain Scotch whiskies. The research stemmed from a simple premise that there is more interaction between the wood and the spirit over a shorter period of time in a small cask than in a large cask, therefore allowing a more rapid “melding” of wood, air and alcohol.

Finished in small, reconstructed x-sherry wood casks, this blended malt takes small batch maturation to an extreme, yielding just 65 bottles! Expect a creamy, citrusy whisky with hints of pepper, orange blossom, icing sugar and thyme. 53.8% Alc./Vol.

Oliver Chilton weaves his magic (yet again) in a devilish amalgam of single malts from two Islay distilleries, hand-picked exclusively for the Australian market. Combined in a single sherry hogshead, as with all the 'Elements' range, there is no age statement. The team believe the most important criteria for any whisky is flavour. This release is no exception. Components are kept secret, but just looking at the bottle tells you everything you need; A colour suggesting serious sherry input, matched against even more serious peat (it's called 'Elements of Islay' for a reason); on the side, Chilton's signature confirms the supervision of one of the best blenders in the business. Kicking off with powerful aromas of barbeque, cured meats, menthol rub and lanolin, the nose continues with notes of dark chocolate, raisin cake, prunes, dried orange peel and baking spice. Peat has the upper hand at first, with the early attack combining medicine chest, old leather, walnut shells and Indian spices, finishing with dried fruit cake, walnut brownies, maritime salinity and ashy dryness. Peat and sherry do battle. Multiple tastings are required to fathom a winner, the sherry requiring 10-20 minutes breathing to really compete. The end result is like Islay-style drunken Christmas pudding or smokey Armagnac, drawing comparisons with Laphroaig's PX cask release, or Bowmore's 'Black Rock' - only this is much, much more intense. A genuine blast for Islay freaks that's also in the reach of most wallets, it adds up to a rarely encountered cask-strength oddity. 380 bottles are available for Australia only. 56.8% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

A new ongoing release from Speciality Drinks that blends malt whiskies from a handful of distilleries across Islay. Great straight up, Full Proof is also ideal for classic cocktails that demand a big flavourful whisky base.

Tasting note: Pale straw / water like hue. Nosing over 3-4 minutes runs the gamut of all things peaty. Dark chocolate, then cool mint-fresh, peppery whiffs of kipper / kelp / seashore; damp terracotta and threads of Crunchie bar in the later stages, finally eclipsed by earthier notes of woolshed / farmyard / lanolin. Intense yet balanced with restrained oily malt, iodine and white pepper. Solid length. Dries out considerably towards the finish. Just about all you could want in an Islay dram. 59.3% Alc./Vol.

"Peat 45" is the reduced strength release of Elements of Islay's smokey duo. Also a vatted malt, this has the same classic Islay character as the 'Full Proof' version with notes of fruit, spice and smoke, only less oomph.

Tasting note: Matured in a Bourbon cask. Pale / water like appearance. Soft and fluffy on the nose with biscuity notes to the fore (granita, choc-ripple) plus faint citrus. Air contact shifts the accent to lanolin / wool shed. Still later a malty base note dominates along with cocoa. Breezy, soft and drying in the mouth, especially towards the finish. Flavours of kipper, spiced citrus and light pepper, turning mineral dry to finish with lanolin lingering in the final stages. Evocative of young Lagavulin. Nicely done. 45% Alc./Vol.

Part of a new line of blended malts from Hunter Laing. Only malt whiskies from the Campbeltown Peninsula can be found in this bottling - so that's Springbank and Glen Scotia (to our knowledge, Glengyle are not currently supplying independents). The nose offers attractive hints of pineapple pudding, orange spice cake and beeswax with a coastal freshness that repeats on the palate only with more wood spice. Faint peat, brine and mineral notes linger, the finish leaning towards Springbank more than Glen Scotia. Tastes on the younger side, but captures some genuine Campbeltown character. 46% Alc./Vol.

'...God, I love this stuff... this is exactly how a vatted malt should be and one of the best samples I've come across since its launch.' - 95 points, Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2017.

Johnnie Walker Green Label is the only whisky in the Walker range to carry the 'Blended Malt Scotch Whisky' certification. It replaces the older term 'Vatted Malt' and indicates that the whisky has been blended exclusively from single malts, and not blended with inexpensive grain whisky. The Walker family began buying some of Scotland's finest distilleries over 100 years ago. Now, with over 27 malt whisky producers in ownership, the company doesn't have to look too far for the very best material. They can choose from the cream of the crop, and have also acquired over a century of distilling experience in the process, guaranteeing the quality of their whisky well into the future.

Undisputed as one of the all-time classics in its genre, Green label is instantly recognisable as a Walker blend, with a profile of fresh and slightly fruity aromas with hints of mango and toffee followed by the trademark whiff of peat & sea air that distinguishes most of the JW stable.

Tasting note: Brassy gold / impeccable clarity. A sophisticated, expressive nose offers an assemblage of soft, sweet peat, oatmeal biscuit, dried mango / fig, white pepper with good freshness - sustained even after several minutes in the glass. Full and well rounded in the mouth with nipping spices carrying the malty attack, along with flavours of salted crackers, restrained peat and an oily-yet-crisp finish with strong staying power. The vivacious and intensely flavoured character of this vatting will keep you coming back time and again. Forget Blue Label: Green and Gold remain the stars in the JW line up. 43% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Just as complex as Johnnie Walker Gold, but fuller and more richly textured. (Not surprising, given that there are no grain whiskies in Johnnie Walker Green.) This is one of the finer vatted malts on the market. Its flavors are well-integrated. You’ll find creamy toffee and nougat at its core, which is then layered with notes of vanilla, mint, fresh brine, and even a hint of mustard seed. Excitingly fresh and vibrant on the finish. A whisky for both the blend and single malt drinker. And at the price, it is also fairly valued for an all-malt whisky.

'Odyssey’, takes its inspiration from the original notes of Sir Alexander Walker and is housed in a swinging decanter to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Sir Alexander’s creation of a whisky vessel capable of staying upright at sea. The whisky itself is a triple malt, blended and married in European oak casks, then housed in a rotating crystal-grade glass decanter.

The product is initially launching in Asia Pacific before being rolled out globally, a move explained by James Thompson, chief marketing officer for Diageo Asia Pacific, who pointed to "an insatiable demand for super deluxe spirits globally and particularly in Asia Pacific".

Asia-Pacific sales of Johnnie Walker now contribute about 12% of the global total and will climb to 20% by 2015. Thailand alone contributes 10% of global Johnnie Walker sales.

“Globally, net sales for Scotch whisky are up 12 percent with most of that growth coming from super deluxe end of the market”, he confirmed, adding, “In Asia Pacific, Scotch whisky delivered more than 80% net sales growth, with almost half coming from super deluxe whiskies."

Jim Beveridge, master blender at Johnnie Walker, described how he searched a number of distilleries in Scotland for the perfect three whiskies to blend for John Walker & Sons Odyssey. “They needed to have the right provenance and pedigree to create the aromas, tastes, flavours and sensations that Sir Alexander was looking for when he created the original blend almost 80 years ago.

When Sir Ernest Shackleton commenced his famous expedition in 1907, he ordered 25 cases of Mackinlay's Rare Old Highland Malt Whisky to take with him. One hundred years later, eleven intact bottles containing the perfectly preserved whisky where discovered under the ice. It inspired Richard 'The Nose' Paterson to recreate this historic dram. There were two versions made - one called "The Journey", the second, "The Discovery".

In the creation of the latter, analysis of the antique established the strength of the whisky at 47.3% alc/vol, the fact that Orkney peat was used in the malting, and that the spirit had been matured in American white oak sherry casks. The replica drew on malts from Glen Mhor and Dalmore distilleries, amongst others.

Off the market for some time now, we have recently chanced upon one bottle. Excellent condition. Comes with timber presentation box, cork stopper and booklet.

Other reviews... Rarely has a blend caused as much excitement as this one, but with good reason. This is also known as the Shackleton whisky, and is a recreation of the whisky abandoned in the Antarctic by explorer Ernest Shackleton more than 100 years ago. It has lemon, spring blossom, and wafts of smoke on the nose. The taste is full and citrusy, with peat and pepper in attendance. Beautifully balanced and outstanding, but there are just 50,000 bottles, so snap it up. 92 points - maltadvocate.com, reviewed by: Dominic Roskrow (Summer 2011)

Notes from Whyte & McKay… Colour - Light honey, straw gold with shimmering highlights. Nose - Soft, elegant & refined. Delicate aromas of crushed apple, pear and fresh pineapple arouse the senses. The spirit is exciting and vibrant with attractive notes of oak shavings that release hints of buttery vanilla, creamy caramel and nutmeg. A whisper of marmalade, cinnamon and even a tease of smoke, ginger and muscovado sugar completes this spectrum of delight. Taste - With a generous strength of 47.3% this gives the spirit plenty of impact on the palate but in a mild warming manner. Harmonious and exhilarating. Whispers of gentle bonfire smoke slowly give way to spicy rich toffee, treacle and pecan nuts. These enticing flavours linger lovingly on the palate but are soon combined by a sensual, complex array of creme brulee, orange rind and freshly baked bread. It is a remarkable tapestry of tantalising taste sensations which truly rewards the palate. 47.3% Alc./Vol.

Winner of World's Best Blended Malt at the 2020 World Whisky Awards.

A marriage of single malts from Islay and Speyside, thus combining both peated and unpeated spirit to create a balanced and complex malt. The recipe, concocted by industry veteran and Master Distiller / Blender of the Year, Billy Walker, includes well-aged GlenAllachie single malt. The small batch expression was matured to perfection at Glenallachie in a combination of Oloroso sherry, red wine and virgin oak casks sourced from around the globe. The result is bottled without added colouring or chill-filtration, and is reported to be brimming with dark chocolate, vanilla fudge, and cinnamon buns, all with gentle peat undertones. Since its release, this vatted beauty has scooped a host of enviable awards including World’s Best Blended Malt (World Whiskies Awards, 2020), Best Blended Malt Scotch (San Francisco World Spirits Competition, 2021) and Master (Scotch Whisky Masters, 2021). The Old Perth brand is a tribute to the city of Perth in Scotland. The label disappeared in the 1970s only to be resurrected in 2013 by independent bottlers, Morrison & Mackay. This sherried variant allegedly includes malts from Glenfarclas, Blair Athol and Glentauchers, all matured in the three main sherry cask types: butts, puncheons and the smaller hogsheads. There's also a sister bottling in the range which is Peaty blended malt.

Tasting note: Amber gold. Rather than classic sherry, the bouquet has a hot toddy-like character - otherwise it's a fairly straightforward blend; a little fruity, gingery, warming and medium bodied. Pleasant but short. Tastes very young. One for the hip flask. 43% Alc./Vol.

    $959.88 Dozen
    ABV: 43%
Described as ‘belching with reek’, this peaty blended malt draws its inspiration from the Victorian Chimney heads or “Grannies” of Old Perth.

Tasting note: Pale gold. Well defined aromas of lanolin, baked citrus and hints of iodine... some kelp too. The salty attack is a treat, as is the unexpected length. Late menthol and faint eucalyptus add interest. Very flavoursome and accessible. 43% Alc./Vol.
2014 North Star Campbeltown 8 Year Old Blended Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Campbeltown, SCOTLAND
    $220. 00
    Bottle
    $2640.00 Dozen
    ABV: 55.1%

This will be sought after! An intriguing cask strength blend combining single malts distilled in 2014 at two or more undisclosed Campbeltown distilleries. Eight years in Port and oloroso sherry octaves resulted in an outturn of 434 bottles. Some harmless natural sediment is apparent, which only serves to highlight the fact that this wasn't filtered. Flavour will be at a maximum. 55.1% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Smashed peaches on your fruit crumble with Creme Anglaise. Palate: Spiced cherry tobacco with unicorn tears. Finish: Silky brambles straight from the bush.

Following on from Mach 4, 3, and 2, it promises another terrific blended malt with a lick of sherry. Reports have it this is the same liquid as the previous editions, only it's slowly been reduced to 46% Alc./Vol. Named after cosmology genius, Ernst Mach, the outturn is approximately 900 bottles.

North Star Blended Malt for Ukraine 7 Year Old Cask Strength Blended Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    SCOTLAND
    $175. 00
    Bottle
    $2100.00 Dozen

Drawn from a sherry butt, this once-off release is dedicated to the people of Ukraine. A run of 500 bottles, each one sold will help raise funds for charities supporting humanitarian aid in the war-torn country. As for the taste, it's one of the biggest, boldest blended malts we've ever tasted, packed with red fruits, Seville orange marmalade, allspice, dense sweet sherry and butterscotch. Collectable. 65.6% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... It says 'From Scotland with love', we could add 'From Alsace with compassion'. What's more I know for a fact that this is sincere and in no way any 'yellow and blue washing', as can be seen at some other places. Colour: full gold. Nose: a few pencil shavings at first, then just a perfect nutty, roasted, caramelised unfolding, with a very perfect young maltiness. We hope we'll soon be able to share these marvellous drops freely with our Ukrainian friends. With water: almost all on malt, plus flints and just old iron tools. Wrecked Russian armoured vehicles? Mouth (neat): butterscotch and cinnamon liqueur, deep malty beer, chocolate and candied fruits, cinnamon cookies… And, well, 65% plus. With water: excellent, reminding me a bit of that Mac 10 c/s of old, really. Finish: long, malty, rich, feeling 15 rather than just 7. More butterscotch and tea with milk. Mind you, who would drink tea with milk? Comments: Slava Ukraini! Should any friends in Russia still read little Whiskyfun (there used to be rather many), I just hope you'll get rid of the butchers eventually, and that we'll soon be able to share drams again too. 88 points - whiskyfun.com

2013 North Star Super Sonic Mach 2 Blended Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    SCOTLAND
    $120. 00
    Bottle
    $1440.00 Dozen

Though slightly lighter in colour than Mach 3, Mach 2 promises another sherried bargain. Bottled at 50% with an outturn of 780 bottles. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the bottlers... Nose – Coffee with some sort of vanilla sweetener, powdered with fancy cappuccino flakes. Palate – Stewed fruits and spices on a bed of burnt roses. That wee touch of rubber is always well received.

Blended Single Malts take complexity to the next level.

Blending whisky, (which in no sense equates to dilution), is a considerable art acquired only after years of experience. Because every distillery's Single Malt whisky has a character of its own and, just as people of different temperaments are often incompatible, so some whiskies will not happily marry. Blended malts contain two or more malt whiskies (usually up to a maximum of six) from two or more different distilleries. 'Vatted Malts' (now officially known as 'blended malts') are being marketed with some rather quirky labels, but in the hands of a master blender, the results can be as exciting as any great Single Malt - indeed, the whiskies potentially encompass the entire flavour spectrum taking complexity to the next level.
