    Ford's Gin (700ml)
    UNITED KINGDOM
    $94. 99
    Bottle
    $1139.88 Dozen
    ABV: 45%
Distilled in London at Thames Distillers, Fords Gin is a collaboration between 8th generation Master Distiller Charles Maxwell and Simon Ford of The 86 Co. A mix of nine botanicals, the gin employs English wheat spirit as a base and includes a traditional blend of juniper & coriander seed, balanced by citrus (bitter orange, lemon & grapefruit peel), florals (jasmine flower & orris) and spices (angelica & cassia). The botanicals are sourced from Joseph Flack & Son’s, who have been importing herbs and spices for medicinal and culinary use into London for over a century. Each botanical is steeped for 15 hours before distillation in 500 litre stills. The gin is then shipped in bulk to Charbay Distillery in California for cutting and bottling.

Tasting note: Bright and clear. Fresh and pure scents offer up suggestions of citrus, coriander, juniper and black pepper, following through to the silk textured, juniper focused mid palate with attractive citrus notes refreshing the finish, fading dry, tangy and gently spicy. Expertly balanced. 45% Alc./Vol.

Four Pillars Bandwagon Rare Dry Non Alcoholic Gin (700ml)
    Yarra Valley, Victoria, AUSTRALIA
    $39. 99
    Bottle
    $479.88 Dozen

Bandwagon Dry is modelled on Four Pillars' signature Rare Dry Gin, less the booze. With fresh, citrusy aromas and a palate of spicy warmth that comes from a heavier load of botanicals instead of alcohol, you can use Bandwagon Dry as you would your 'regular' Four Pillars Gin. Ingredients include juniper, orange, lemon myrtle, star anise, and angelica, all infused with additional warmth from red chilli and Tasmanian pepperberry. Four Pillar's dedication to delivering a realistic mouthfeel ensures that every sip captures the essence of traditional gin.

Four Pillars Fresh Yuzu Gin (700ml)
    Yarra Valley, Victoria, AUSTRALIA
    $79. 99
    Bottle
    $959.88 Dozen
    ABV: 41.8%

Looking like small grapefruits, the Asian Yuzu fruit has been the inspiration for several Japanese gins, aiming to retain its delicious sweet, sour and bitter flavours in harmony with the freshness of juniper. This is not the first time Four Pillars have experimented with the fruit. A limited edition collaborative bottling was launched in 2017. It was followed in 2019 with the Distiller Series 'Changing Seasons Gin' made with help from Japan's Kyoto Distillery. As of 2022, Four Pillars are including 'Fresh Yuzu Gin' as a permanent addition to their core range.

Mountain Yuzu, from the nearby Ovens Valley supply the Healesville-based distillery with fresh yuzus. Describing the flavour of the new gin, Co-founder and Distiller Cam Mackenzie comments, “Yuzu brings amazing aromatics that are a mix of lemon, mandarin, cumquat and grapefruit – all bright and fresh citrus notes – while the addition of finger lime adds some deeper citrus character. We’ve also learnt a lot (from the best) in our adventures making gin with Japanese friends, so in our take on Yuzu gin, we’ve used ginger, turmeric and sencha genmaicha, a Japanese green tea with roasted brown rice, for depth of flavour. A canvas of strong pine-needle juniper and a bit of lemon myrtle add a touch of lemon curd.”

Drink it however you like to drink your favourite gin, but it’s at its best in a Highball with plenty of ice, soda or light tonic and any kind of citrus garnish (best of all would be fresh yuzu, if you can find it!) 41.8% Alc./Vol.

Four Pillars Olive Leaf Gin (700ml)
    Yarra Valley, Victoria, AUSTRALIA
    $89. 99
    Bottle
    $1079.88 Dozen
    ABV: 43.8%
Four Pillars first new addition to the core range since 2015 was realised after a visit to Cobram Estate in Northern Victoria. During harvest, Cam McKenzie recognised that olive oil could work as a botanical. Experimentation led to olive tree leaves as well as around a litre of fresh Cobram Estate olive oil being added to the still.

The oil is not what you'd purchase from the supermarket shelves. It's sourced from two Spanish Olive varieties – 'Picual' & 'Hojiblanca'- and one Italian – 'Coratina'. 250gm of local bay leaf and rosemary are also included, plus there's more coriander and much more juniper than Rare Dry. Other botanicals include lemon myrtle, fresh local lemons, macadamia and grapefruit.

The gin is savoury, textural and bright.
Brand Ambassador, John Raphael adds, "The texture is quite remarkable, it’s a step away from traditional Four Pillars distillations that has always seen oranges and pepperberry in the mix... it's far more savoury and stands up to full Mediterranean tonics or the ideal Martini base." 43.8% Alc./Vol.

Four Pillars Bloody Shiraz Gin (700ml)
    Yarra Valley, Victoria, AUSTRALIA
    $85. 99
    Bottle
    $1031.88 Dozen
    ABV: 37.8%
As close as a Gin comes to a cult following!

Yet another 'vintage' of this novel Aussie release has been made by steeping Yarra Valley Shiraz grapes in gin for eight weeks. The fruit was de-stemmed but kept mainly as whole berries, and the tanks were kept cold and stirred daily. After eight weeks the fruit was pressed before blending with more Gin. The final product was bottled unfiltered and is expected to develop secondary fruit characters beyond two years, but should be best consumed within two years of vintage.

Notes from Four Pillars... (2017 release) The beauty of Bloody Shiraz Gin being a product of vintage means that it will never be the same. Our 2017 release has an incredibly vibrant ruby colour, which turns iridescent pink when mixed with tonic or soda. Aromatically the gin has fresh pine needles and incredible spice, and a clear peppery, dense raspberry character. The palate is lovely and sweet, with long juniper and spice characters to finish. This release is slightly lighter in colour than last year's, due to a cool vintage in the Yarra Valley with a moderate ripening period. Unlike Sloe Gin, the alcohol is 37.8% (rather than <30%) so it packs a punch and is ideal in a range of cocktails.

2016 release tasted... Deep purple with mauve edges. Berry tart, stewed plum and light pepper/paprika aromas over background juniper and grapefruit. Medium bodied with soft, silky, off-dry, juicy plum and raspberry tart flavours and a delicate grapefruit, cinnamon, white pepper, piney-juniper finish. Ends medium long, slightly sweet, with subtle spicy red fruits in the aftertaste. A delicious, creative and cleverly balanced take on traditional sloe gin. 37.5% Alc./Vol. 91 points

Four Pillars Spiced Negroni Gin (700ml)
    Yarra Valley, Victoria, AUSTRALIA
    $89. 99
    Bottle
    $1079.88 Dozen
    ABV: 43.8%

Four Pillars wanted to create a gin specifically for the Negroni - something to cut through the Campari and vermouth. And as the Negroni has always been a favourite at Four Pillars, distiller, Cameron MacKenzie jumped at the chance to make the first collaboration in their "Bartender Series" - a tribute to the very definition of a perfectly balanced cocktail.

First, they took their base botanicals and upped the amount of Tasmanian pepperberry leaf and cinnamon. Then they added an exotic West African spice called Grains of Paradise. This is one of the most unusual spices in the world, with clove and sichuan characters. But although very powerful, the spice tends to glow rather than become hot.

They also decided to use organic blood oranges in the botanical basket, as well as some ginger.

Tasting note: Crystal clear. Intense orange sorbet opening develops pith and peel freshness followed by hints of jaffa, white pepper and cut ginger. Creamy, soft textured delivery features early orange peel and later subtle hints of juniper. Excellent balance and freshness. Cough lozenge-like warmth and light jaffa in the fade. 43.8% Alc./Vol.

Four Pillars Bartender Series Modern Australian Gin (700ml)
    Yarra Valley, Victoria, AUSTRALIA
    $89. 99
    Bottle
    $1079.88 Dozen
    ABV: 45%
This is number 2 in the Bartender Series.
Four Pillars worked with QANTAS and the Rockpool mixology team to create an Asian-inspired Modern Australian style. The bartenders were aiming for a gin with nice spicy complexity and mixability – something to create a tasty G&T, or classic dry martini. Plus, with all that spice it also makes a spot-on Red Snapper.

Red and green Szechuan give it a lovely warm mouthfeel while the macadamia nuts give it softness and an almost creamy palate. Fresh Rose Glow apples, tangelos, grapefruit peel and dry native quandong add fruity notes.

Tasting note: Clear. Spicy feel to the bouquet offering lifted scents of peppercorn and coriander seed over fresh juniper and citrus. A full bodied, creamy, oily textured gin suggesting flavours of green cardamom, juniper and liquorice root with intensifying peppers towards the finish. Ends, dry, warming, vibrant, vaguely herbal with hints of anise, lemon peel and orris root through the aftertaste. Will make great Bloody Marys. 45% Alc./Vol.

    Four Pillars Gin (700ml)
    Yarra Valley, Victoria, AUSTRALIA
    $74. 99
    Bottle
    $899.88 Dozen
    ABV: 41.8%

One of Australia's latest distilling ventures is located in the Yarra Valley. Their first spirit is a modern Australian Gin; possessing an equal mix of local and exotic botanicals including Juniper Berries, Coriander Seeds, Cardamom Pods, Tasmanian Pepperberry Leaf, Cinnamon, Lavender, Angelica, Star Anise, Lemon Myrtle and Fresh Oranges.

The distiller's state, "In terms of our ambition for our first gin, we didn't want a London Dry Gin but we couldn't ignore juniper. The way we have approached it is that the juniper is the canvas and the other botanicals paint the picture. The Tassie pepper is brilliant on the palate, giving us warmth rather than heat. Lemon myrtle is a beautiful, complex and unique alternative to lemon peel. Perhaps most interesting is our use of whole oranges. It’s unusual to use fresh produce in gin but Australian citrus is highly aromatic and supports the spicier botanicals like coriander, cardamom and star anise.

Tasting notes: [BATCH No.2 tasted] Clear. Vibrant, lifted aroma is citrus focussed with its distinct lemon peel top note hovering over peppery, woody, piney, juniper notes. Second pass sees the aroma turn creamy and more lemon-meringue like. Hints of eucalyptus emerge in the final inspection to round off a very appealing gin bouquet. An unassuming entry leads into a concentrated, creamy yet spicy, medium dry profile featuring citrus peel, juniper and pepper. Excellent balance. Lemon / lime / spice aftertaste concludes with a dry, chalky fade. Consider adding this to your Gin repertoire over summer. Recommended. 41.8% Alc./Vol.

Four Pillars Navy Strength Gin (700ml)
    Yarra Valley, Victoria, AUSTRALIA
    $104. 99
    Bottle
    $1259.88 Dozen
    ABV: 58.8%

One of Australia's latest distilling ventures is located in the Yarra Valley and it's going gangbusters. Regular readers will remember the standard ABV release from several months back. This limited edition ups the ante in an extraordinary way. It's also recently being awarded a prestigious double gold medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. 92 gins were assessed this year, with only nine scoring the double gold award. Here's the distiller explaining how they pulled it off:

"After experimenting with some exclusive batches for the Gin Palace (a Melbournian Gin institution) we decided to add fresh Byron Bay finger limes to the distillation, along with our beautiful organic oranges. This means we undertake a frenzy of distilling when these beauties are in season, and release just one edition of the Navy Strength each year.

The finger limes highlight the Asian spices like coriander and star anise, and are complemented by the addition of fresh ginger. Finally, fresh turmeric adds a fresh but earthy quality.

The resulting gin has lifted aromatics of lime curd, pine needles, and fragrant spices with a vanilla character which pulls the spices together. The palate is intense - sweet and juicy - but it is still very clean. The turmeric has added weight and earthiness to the palate with a freshness not unlike dill or cucumber." - Notes sourced from Four PIllars.

Tasting note: Brilliant rainwater clear with a bright silvery blush. Sensational intensity with lifted lemon verbena / lime cough lozenge notes in the opening pass. Further air contact shifts the accent towards juniper and orange peel over suggestions of turmeric, dried curry leaf and white pepper. A crisp, dry, juniper focussed entry preludes a powerful yet poised, creamy textured mid-palate attack with juicy orange / lime zest and vibrant peppers. Finish features lemon meringue, lime gelato and a drying turmeric-like texture followed by a medley of citrus flavours, all carried by the lively spices in a finale that seemingly never ends. Super long and immensely satisfying. Best Aussie Gin to date? 58.8% Alc./Vol.

G Vine Nouaison Small Batch Gin (700ml)
    Cognac, FRANCE
    $89. 99
    Bottle
    $1079.88 Dozen
    ABV: 43.9%

G'Vine Nouaison employs nine botanicals including nutmeg, cubeb berries, ginger roots, liquorice, lime, juniper berries, corriander, cassia bark and green grape flower. The botanicals are infused over a two to five day process and distilled in the grape neutral spirit. Small liquor stills are utilized to insure the best quintessence. A fifth and final distillation: the green grape flowers essence, the Ugni Blanc neutral spirit and the botanical spirits are blended in perfect proportion and copper pot distilled one last time for a complete marriage.

Nouaison is one of two aromatic gins available from G'vine. This version approaches a London-Dry style with Juniper becoming a prominant feature along with a higher ABV at 43.9%.

Other reviews: Clear. Intense aromas of cinnamon bark, candied lemon peels, almond bark, and floral juniper follow through on a round, silky entry to a bold dry-yet-fruity medium-full body with with menthol, pine resin, anise, and mineral oil flourishes. Finishes with an interesting interplay of juniper and herb flavors with dried violet and winter mint top notes. A charming, exotic panoply of flavors make this a must try gin for innovative cocktails.

    Gabriel Boudier Saffron Gin (700ml)
    Dijon, FRANCE
    $94. 99
    Bottle
    $1139.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Saffron Gin is a unique recipe discovered in the archives of France's colonial past when England and France both claimed India as their jewel, and Gins rich in exotic botanicals were fashionable. Apart from Saffron which gives this Gin a delicately spicy character, seven other fresh botanicals are used including Juniper, Coriander, Lemon, Orange peel, Angelica seeds, Iris and Fennel. Saffron Gin is only produced in small batches using a traditional pot still, so at this stage availability is limited.

Tasting note: Brilliant deep orange/gold appearance. Semi sweet scents are of orange and mandarine peel over more subtle juniper notes. Delicate spices emerge after time in the glass with suggestions of saffron. A mild entry leads into a light to medium bodied palate that repeats the citrus peel-over-juniper theme. Soft, gently spicy mouth feel. Concludes refreshingly dry followed by a delicate juniper and spice aftertaste. If there’s saffron evident it comes through very late (more texturally than taste wise) and in such a subtle way that if you weren’t looking at the bottle, it wouldn’t enter the flavour equation. Would integrate well into citrus based cocktails but this is definitely not a gin that works well with tonic. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... The bright orange/new copper appearance is the result I assume in part, of FD&C Yellow #5 coloring agent as stated on the label; no sediment seen; since this gin contains saffron, why artificially bring the color to such an outlandish orange degree? A potential turn-off aspect to bartenders who pay attention and like natural products. Opening sniffs detect plenty of juniper and mild herbal notes upfront; further aeration time doesn’t stimulate more in the way of ginny aromas. Entry is strikingly sweet and seed-like; midpalate focuses on the herbal bittersweet and piney/juniper components but little else. Ends on a pleasant note of coriander, juniper and barely perceptible fennel. The high level of sweetness and the phony looking color might present mixing problems. They should try a hint of color, not the neon approach. Not Recommended. - www.spiritjournal.comsize>

    Garden Grown Gin (700ml)
    New South Wales, AUSTRALIA
    $94. 99
    Bottle
    $1139.88 Dozen
    ABV: 42%
Note: the title of this product has changed from 'Distillery Botanica' to 'Garden Grown Gin'. It's the same liquid, produced in the same way, to the same recipe, by the same people.

Garden Grown Gin is produced at Distillery Botanica and employs a process known as enfleurage, a thousand-year-old technique. Traditionally it applies to flower petals - these are placed on glass trays containing a wax or animal fat called a 'corps'. This corps which is highly purified with no odour or water remaining absorbs the flavour and fragrance from the flowers. Every 24 hours the petals are removed from the tray and replaced with fresh ones. This may be repeated dozens of times per tray. The trays are stacked so that the tray on the top can trap the rising fragrance from the flowers on the tray below.

Once saturated with aromatics, the corps is referred to as the "pomade" (the most highly saturated pomade is called "pomade No. 36" because the frames have been charged with fresh flowers 36 times, the maximum during enfleurage). The next step is to break up the pomade in the presence of high strength neutral spirit which takes up the natural flower oils and leaves the spent fat behind.

At Garden Grown Gin, the aim is to extract the purest perfume from their chief botanical, Murraya, without the use of heat. This makes the delicate flower come alive with cues of jasmine, honeysuckle and orange blossom.

Distiller, Phillip Moore adds, "the gin also includes a rose enfleurage using an old fashioned Tea Rose from our garden. It is known as the Duchess de Brabant. Our garden also supplies Chamomile flowers which when distilled immediately on picking have a delicious apple character with a delightful bitter finish. To carry on the perfume allusion of enfleurage we also use orris root which is used in Chanel No 5. In perfume and gin orris is a fixative which creates harmony and also slows down the evaporation of the more volatile aromas. Orris has its own violet aroma. It enters the palate very sweetly and adds a richness and viscosity all over. On the finish it contributes a high quality bitter and an earthiness which is almost pastry like".

Tasting note: Crystal clear, shows good viscosity. Pure and ultra fresh with a juniper and black pepper base overlaid by sweet floral top notes. Aeration offers suggestions of orange blossom, rose petal and muted lavender and later hints of incense candles. Creamy yet vibrant entry with a seamless integration of juniper / herbal / floral / wax-like notes. Concludes tongue tingling, peppery, fresh, long. Delicate and multi-layered. Beautifully composed. 42% Alc./Vol.

This is the flagship gin from Silvio Carta, considered one of the most prestigious distilleries and wineries in Sardinia. Prized for its purity, Giniu is created exclusively from fresh juniper berries from the Sardinian coast. There are no other botanicals in the mix.

Tasting note: Clear with a creamy nose-feel offering moderate aromas of pine buds and hints of lemon mousse. A light to medium bodied style. Soft-textured flavours of crushed pine needles, dried herbs and white pepper. Drying juniper finish. Try it in a Negroni. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Giniu Gin is surely one of the best Italian Gin you can find on the market, the general quality is better then the other gins, let’s admit it clearly, because you will never be able to reproduce this gin elsewhere... Juniper in Sardinia is easy to find, in its sub-species “Juniperus phoenicea” or in Italian “ginepro coccolone”, because of its big greenish “cones”, that have a different aromaticity from the juniper we’re all used to smell and love. Giniu’s Juniper smells fresher and “greener”, and it’s really inviting, a smell that everyone who has wandered in a Sardinian beach can remember. Traditionally, these “cones” were illegally distilled to produce something like a gin, called “giniu” locally, a spirit that was forgotten in recent times and that this brand wants to relive. The link with the territory is evident then, and it offers the chance to use some of the most interesting botanicals I ever smelled in a gin: myrtle, pistacia lentiscus or mastic, thyme, wild fennel, lemon and Salvia desoleana and juniper of course. They all come from Sardinia and you can tell it. - gintitaly.it

    Hayman's Old Tom Gin (700ml)
    London, UNITED KINGDOM
    $69. 99
    Bottle
    $839.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Old Tom Gin is the last remaining example of the original lightly sweetened Gins that were so popular in 18th and 19th century England. The name comes from what may be the first example of a beverage vending machine. In the 1700's some pubs in England would have a wooden plaque shaped like a black cat (an 'Old Tom') mounted on the outside wall. Thirsty passersby would deposit a penny in the cat's mouth and place their lips around a small tube between the cat's paws. The bartender inside would then pour a shot of Gin through the tube and into the customer's waiting mouth. Until fairly recently limited quantities of Old Tom-style Gin were still being made by a few British distillers, but they were, at best, curiosity items. Hayman's Old Tom Gin is an exception.

The original company of Hayman Distillers was founded in the 1800’s by James Burrough, the great Grandfather of the current Chairman, Christopher Hayman. James Burrough created the world renowned Beefeater Gin. Although Beefeater Gin and James Burrough Limited were sold to Whitbread in 1987, the Hayman family retained part of the business and continued the tradition of distilling and blending Gin and other white spirits.

Following the 18th Century tradition, Hayman's Old Tom Gin is a botanically-intensive and lightly sweetened style of gin distilled from 100% grain. In comparison to London Dry Gin, the Old Tom style delivers a more rounded taste experience with depth. The distinctive Old Tom Gin profile is the key ingredient in classic gin cocktails such as the Martinez, Tom Collins and Ramos Gin Fizz.

“...it is very exciting to be reviving this old
but not forgotten classic style of Gin”

    - Christopher Hayman, Chairman, Hayman Distillers

Christopher and James Hayman are direct descendents of James Burrough, who founded Beefeater Gin in 1820.

The Hayman's portfolio includes London Dry Gin, Old Tom Gin, Fruit Gin, Wood Aged Gin and they're preparing to introduce a Navy gin soon (but not under the Hayman label).

The collection would not be complete without a traditional English Sloe gin made by infusing Sloe berries, a type of wild plum from the Blackthorn Tree. Hayman's is made from a long standing family recipe previously only available for private use. Sloe Berries are gently steeped for several months with Hayman's Gin before been blended with natural sugars for a deliciously bittersweet experience. 26% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Clear. Sweet candied citrus, nutmeg custard, and piney juniper aromas follow through on a smooth, vibrant entry to a glycerous dry-yet-fruity with great depth, smoothness, and vibrancy. ABV: 41.4%

Double Gold winner at the 2004 San Francisco International Spirits Competition of the Year, Hendrick’s is an iconoclastically produced small batch gin distilled in Ayrshire, Scotland. Apart from traditional Gin ingredients such as juniper berries, coriander and citrus peel, the unusual distillation process combined with an oddly delicious set of infusions (including cucumbers and rose petals) yields a one-of-a-kind gin that is passionately loved by a tiny yet growing handful of individuals all over the world.

Our tasting revealed impressive intensity in the opening sniff which is gently peppery and floral with restrained juniper and sweet earthy, herbaceous scents. The aromas lead into a mid-weight, creamy textured and well-integrated amalgam of citrus peel / juniper / pepper; along with hints of dried flowers and cucumber towards the finish. A peppery flourish added late vibrancy while carrying the length. 41.4 Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... The nose offers wave after wave of botanical and floral perfumes, with the end bouquet focused on cucumber and spring garden floral scents. The palate entry is moderately oily, semisweet and gently herbal; the midpalate stays spirity, vegetal and earthy. The aftertaste features juniper with a dry and minerally undertaste. 85-89 points - wineenthusiast.com

An antipodean take on the classic English sloe gin recipe. The base was distilled with some of Ink Gin’s star players - juniper berry, coriander, angelica and liquorice root with a tart infusion of sloe berries balanced by an explosion of sweet red berries. The final ingredient is Rosella flower. Growing wild on the fringes of tropical rainforest of northern Australia, rosellas are a type of hibiscus contributing a vibrant colour and a crisp, tart flavour. Bottled at a 'traditional strength' of 26%, the result is a refreshing lower strength “Drink Less - Enjoy More” option - perfect for sipping on the rocks. Note: Because the colour of Ink Gin is 100% natural, with no artificial stabilisers, it may fade over time. We recommend enjoying your bottle sooner rather than later.

    ABV: 43%
First unveiled at the Australian Boutique Drinks Festival 'Top Shelf' in August 2015, NSW producers 'Husk Distillers' made quite the stir with their Australian Ginnovation, 'Ink Dry Gin'.

Based in Tumbulgum, NSW (North of Byron Bay), distiller Paul Messenger has incorporated 14 botanicals into the mix, highlighting juniper, locally grown lemon myrtle, Tasmanian pepper berries and the exotic bois bande. Yet, for most, the star of the show are the 'Butterfly pea flowers' (often used as a colourant in Southeast Asian cooking), which have resulted in an eye-catching bluish/violet coloured gin. The flowers have an incredibly sensitive pH balance, meaning even the slightest shift in acidity can turn a beverage from deep blue, to a pink blush, i.e. Tonic!

The distillery has also produced an Australian Agricole (sugar cane) styled Rum and cane spirit, both of which are outstanding.

Tasting notes: Striking translucent French blue colour with mauve edges. Aromas of piney juniper, lemon gelato, thyme, sweet oregano and white pepper, follow through with bright and zesty flavours of lemon gelato, late juniper, white pepper and pleasing spirit warmth. Aftertaste is delicately bitter; hints of thyme and distant juniper in the fade. A novel citrus-forward style for dazzling cocktails. 43% Alc./Vol.

"...all the hallmarks to be the new Hendrick’s." - www.ginfoundry.com
One of the most beautifully presented gins to come our way in years arrives all the way from the Hebrides in Scotland. Sugar kelp is key to the subtle coastal notes in this beauty - hand-harvested by a local diver from the deep underwater forests of the Outer Hebrides.

Managing Director, Simon Erlanger explains, “We worked with an ethnobotanist recommended to us by our Chairman’s daughter, who we commissioned to explore our island’s flora, to see what is sustainable to harvest and what sort of properties they might bring to our gin. After looking on land, she finally turned to the sea and that’s where we found our answers.”

This sustainable ingredient completes the wider aspects of the gin's flavour profile, with other botanicals being Juniper, Coriander, Angelica Root, Orris Root, Cubeb, Bitter Orange Peel, Liquorice and Cassia Bark. It's all captured in a striking glass bottle, ribbed and rippled like the seas of Luskentyre. There are subtle imperfections, dimples and dips to hold it safely while you pour. The label is simple, though no two are quite alike, each individually flecked with fragments of copper leaf and Sugar Kelp. Strong reviews all round with what reads as a premium London Dry with a maritime twist. We received a 30ml sample. The nose has excellent purity with juniper, light menthol, brine and vaguely sappy / resiny notes. Air contact accents orange oils and citrus cough lozenge. The palate follows through with vibrant, peppery flavours suggestive of lemon sherbet and juniper with a zesty mouthfeel, a warming finish and all-round excellent balance. 45% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Tasted neat the lead is a strong floral and piney juniper. This is quickly followed by dry spice almost like fresh nutmeg (this must be a combination of the citrus peel and cassia) rounding out in the linger to a full sweetness with grapefruit notes...The distiller set out to capture the elemental and maritime nature of the Isle of Harris and this gin, from the bottle to the glass, does just that. A genuine sweet-savoury gin, which is quite rare if not unique. Enjoyable on the rocks as well as making a damn fine gin and tonic which works well with grapefruit peel garnish. 45% Alc./Vol. - thelondonginclub.com

Notes from the distillery...The Isle of Harris Distillery is known as 'The Social Distillery', an ethos which embraces the generous character of our island and the people who live here. Although very much a working distillery, we open our doors six days a week, to connect with all those who want to learn more about our story and share our spirit. A peat fire burns at the heart of the building in Tarbert, symbolising the warmth of an Outer Hebridean welcome and the life we are bringing to our wider community. We have built a distillery on the Isle of Harris to be about people and to benefit the people of Harris. In the face of local population decline, we are a creator of sustainable employment and a catalyst for commercial growth. We strive to be symbol of optimism and change and a new voice for the islands, a nourishing source of pride and belonging for the Hearach in all of us.

Nose: A well-defined juniper note with pine needles, immediately followed by the fresh citrus notes of bitter orange, lime and grapefruit. Develops a complex floral note of rose and wallflowers with crushed green herbs, coriander and gooseberry all underpinned by mixed spice. Sugar kelp adds to the complexity and richness and gives a dry maritime note.

Palate: Refreshing gin with good balance between the bitter juniper and pine and the sweet fruit flavours of mango, grapefruit and orange. A green herb flavour has developed of crushed coriander. Distinctive and smooth with a dry, flinty taste.

Finish: Overall a long, clean finish. As the juniper and citrus fade away, sweet vanilla and black pepper remain with a gentle reminder of the sea.

    $99. 99
    Bottle
    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 27%

KIS Mulberry gin started out as a small scale experiment with miniscule volumes making it to retailers around the country. The instant popularity of the product has encouraged KIS to make it part of their core range. It's essentially an Aussie variant to a traditional 'Sloe' Gin, with no added sugar, made by infusing local mulberries in the distillery's award winning Wild Gin.

Tasting note: Deepest opaque alizarin crimson – borderline black. Stains the glass. Lovely purity to the berry accented bouquet. Excellent freshness. The gin presence is nicely retained. Finishes delicately tart with the warming spirit carrying the mulberry infusion. Try it with basil and lemon juice, or mix it up with Lemon Tonic (bitter lemon) or ginger beer. 27% Alc./Vol.

Already a star in the world whisky scene after just ten years, Kavalan Distillery has now released the very first Taiwan-inspired gin. Employing botanicals sourced from Yilan, just outside Taipei including kumquat peel, dried star fruit and red-flesh guava botanical extracts, the mix also includes juniper, aniseed and coriander. Produced using a malted barley base spirit, Master Distiller, Ian Chang adds “Above all, I wanted this Gin to be refreshing and elegant. Imagine taking a dip in a crystal pool on an intense summer's day. That's what I had in mind for the experience of drinking Kavalan Gin.” The final result is double charcoal-filtered and triple distilled.

Tasting note: Clear. Unusual floral / fruity aromas hint at elderflower, feijoa or tangerine peel? A light to medium bodied gin with atypical flavours suggesting orange sherbet, elderflower and frail juniper. Finish is soft, rounded, brisk and slightly soapy. Rose petal, subtle citrus peel and elderflower-like notes through the aftertaste. A fruity, idiosyncratic style that departs from traditional London Dry. 40% Alc./Vol.

    $1500.00 Dozen
    ABV: 45.7%
The world’s first, truly 100% Japanese gin, from the inside out.

The Kyoto Distillery is the brainchild of whisky exporters, David Croll and Marcin Miller (founders of the Number One Drinks Co). The gin they produce is distilled, blended and bottled in Kyoto and is reportedly the nation’s first craft gin.

Made in a dry style but with a distinct Japanese accent, indigenous botanicals are what separate Kinobi from the pack. “We had originally started experimenting with 50 to 60 ingredients, but that gave us a gin that tasted too classic,” says The Kyoto Distillery’s head distiller Alex Davies, who had previously run England’s Cotswalds Distillery. “We wanted ours to have a clearly defined Japanese character, so we narrowed it down to a handful of core flavors.”

These include yellow yuzu from the north of Kyoto Prefecture, hinoki wood chips (Japanese cypress), bamboo, gyokuro tea from the Uji region and green sanshō (Japanese peppercorn) berries. To add a further touch, the gin is produced in copper pot stills from a rice spirit with water sourced in the famous sake–brewing district of Fushimi. A second smaller still is used for herbal distillations.

The local input extends to the packaging: The glass bottles are hand-blown by craftsmen in Osaka. The screen-printed label was designed in association with Kyoto’s oldest maker of karakami (woodblock prints). A must have for any collection (or for followers of Obi-Wan Kenobi) - the name actually translates to ‘The Beauty of the Seasons’. Very limited.

Tasting note: Nicely integrated aromas of pine sap and lemon oregano with peppercorn and wasabi-like warmth. Follows through with a concentrated, piney-woody, herbal entry becoming linear, elegant and finely balanced towards the finish. Subtle aftertaste combines creamy juniper, delicate heat and citrus freshness. Excellent persistence. Quite nuanced. Reserve for martinis. 45% Alc./Vol.

Named after the Forty-spotted Pardalote, the island's rarest bird, and produced at the Lark Distillery, this gin matches traditional gin botanicals with Tasmanian pepperberry. We're serious about gin.

Distilleries both small and large from every continent on earth can now lay claim to a Gin. You could be cynical and suggest it's merely to maintain cash flow while more 'serious' barrel aged spirits mature. Gin is easy and cheap. After all, it's just flavoured vodka at the end of the day, right? That line of thinking misrepresents all this spirit can be in the hands of visionaries and fanatics. The freshest botanicals in high quality alcohol result in an exotic amalgam of accents and supporting notes that no white spirit can match. Perfumed complexity and bracing intensity are not the characteristics of every gin we taste - hence, it can't be that easy to achieve.
