Pinot Noir

While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago. The Te Muna Road vineyard, sited 7km from Martinborough town, is planted on an ancient dried riverbed of stony clay soils, and fruit for this wine is sourced from a higher terrace than the parcel-selection Aroha. The winemaking – by Julian Grounds – is similar; however, this sees more (34%) whole-bunch fruit and less (27%) new oak. Anne Krebiehl MW: Juicy, flowing, with dense red cherry, freshness, nothing overdone. Lovely now, will also last the distance. Very balanced. Justin Knock MW: Deep blue and purple fruits, creamy aromas, plush and layered. Expansive and powerful but also very fine. A really wonderful wine. Dirceu Vianna Junior MW: Youthful, vibrant and elegantly scented. Ripe dark fruits, spice and elegant leafy notes. Great concentration, silky texture and savoury complexity. Drink 2023-2033.

D’Anna Middleton Lewis (DML VIN) is a partnership between the D’Anna family, Sam Middleton and Jordan Lewis. It focuses on single site regional Pinot Noir with the first vintage being released in June 2019.

I texted Anth D’Anna, Franco D’Anna, and Sam Middleton just now, asking which was the best DML Pinot in 2021. Mornington or Yarra? Anth says ‘Mornington’, Franco says ‘Mornington’, Sam says ‘double emoji laughing’ and then ‘probably Mornington’. I don’t have Jordan Lewis’ mobile number, so I asked him on Instagram, ‘It seems to be Mornington, though I think the Yarra will age better’. Wise words.
Strawberry, a little spice, almond, kind of pretty, with a flicker of mint and light cedar oak. It’s light to medium-bodied, delicate and lacy, a subtle hazelnut flavour, fine grained emery board tannin, very fresh, again the spiced strawberry and a minty blood orange, but pure finish of excellent length. Lovely wine with a ‘mineral’ character, and a certain cool charm. Drink 2022 - 2029+

The Coal River is one of my favourite places for pinot noir in Tasmania. There's a beautiful fragrance to this wine, somewhere between roses and violets, holding from the first moment of its captivating bouquet to the last trace of its enduring finish. Pitch-perfect red cherries run in tandem, intricately upheld by fine, mineral tannins. A triumph. Drink by 2032.

Fruit was sourced from Dalrymple’s own vineyards at Pipers River and Coal River Valley along with growers in Swansea and Ouse.  Utilising a variety of blocks, different clones and slightly different aspects each of these sites made its own unique contribution to the final blend. The cooler northern maritime location at Pipers River produces Pinot Noir that is focused and structured, while the Coal River Valley in the south adds texture and softness to the mid-palate. Five to twenty five percent whole bunches were included depending on the site and maturation took place in French oak barriques (20% new) for a period of 9 months.
Dark red in colour with black shaded edges and a light red hue. Exceptionally perfumed the nose features a wonderful array of violet, dark cherry, strawberry and subtle anise aromas followed by some forest floor, fresh herb and delicate spicy cedar notes. Seductive red to dark cherry and strawberry fruits are sprawled across the palate with great power and intensity. Notions of forest floor, delicate anise, infusions of fresh herbs and spicy cedar linger through the finish. Supple in its texture with silky smooth tannins and a complimentary freshness it concludes long and expansive.

Once again there is a highly appealing freshness to the somewhat earthier aromas that also blend floral and spice nuances into wild red and dark berry scents. The rich, full-bodied and powerful larger-scaled flavors possess impressive mid-palate concentration while displaying good verve on the moderately rustic, complex and beautifully long finish. This is terrific for its level. Drink from 2028+.

A more restrained but equally pretty nose displays a broad range of floral nuances along with pretty spice nuances on the red and dark currant scents. PHI is the 21st letter of the Ancient Greek alphabet and symbolises balance, harmony and proportion. The Lusatia Park vineyard was purchased by the De Bortoli family in 2016 having been previously the source of some of the finest Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays made in the Yarra Valley. Fermented with a combination of whole berries and whole bunches the resulting wine was matured in a mix of new and used French oak barriques for a period of 7 months.

A gorgeous Yarra Valley Pinot with four trophies to its name.

Semi translucent red to dark red colour with black toned edges and a light red hue. Perfumed nose with aromas of violets, red to dark cherries, strawberries, rhubarb and hints of clove blossoming out of the glass. Lending further complexity are forest floor, brambly cedar and spice notes. Gorgeously fruited and supple in its feel, a power wave of dark cherry, strawberry and subtle rhubarb are layered across the palate with superb depth. Silky smooth tannins with notions of brambly dried herbs, forest floor and spicy cedar also chiming in. Expansive with a long peacocks tail like finish that’s incredibly moreish. Produced by the De Bortoli family from their Upper Yarra vineyard, Lusatia Park. Phi is the 21st letter of the ancient Greek alphabet and symbolises balance, harmony and proportion. It has great depth of brilliant red-purple colour and dark cherry, Campari and mixed spice aromas, the palate bright and fresh, intense and medium weighted, with plum pit flavours and a pleasant trace of bitterness to finish. It has good structure and would cellar for a few years, but it’s delicious now. True finesse and palate length.

Benoit is the 4th generation of Chevallier vignerons in Vosne-Romanée, and from 2018 has taken over production of the domaine. One of the rare and exciting new names in Burgundy that are working their estate owned vines, Benoit has hit the ground running in very short time. His wines are bright, energetic, and concentrated and show wonderful structure.

Organic viticulture is practiced in each of the plots, and from there the grapes are treated with utmost care. After sorting in the vineyard, all bunches are destemmed gently to preserve full berries, and vinification takes place in cement and wooden vats, with macerations lasting two to three weeks with gentle pump-overs and occasional punch-downs. The village wines are aged 12-14 months and the rest for about 18 months in new to three–year-old oak, depending on the cuvee and vintage.

Domaine Bouchard Père et Fils is one of the most respected names in Burgundy, yet despite their renown, it seems the market has not yet fully appreciated just how good the wines currently being produced are. They are the largest owner of Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards in Burgundy, this includes prized plots such as Montrachet, Chevalier Montrachet, Chambertin, Bonnes Mares, and Meursault Perrieres.
Founded in 1731, the subsequent nine generations of the Bouchard family has amassed an impressive 130ha of vineyards, including nearly 100 separate climats. It's perhaps this large size, contrasting the current trend for tiny producers with a cult following that has meant Bouchard are not front and centre in the minds of many Burgundy drinkers. A true shame as Bouchard are making some of the best wines in their history.

Pretty scents of violet, sour to red cherry and rhubarb emanate from the glass with some vanillin cedar, meaty characters, earth and subtle stalky dried herb notes also evident. Polished tannin structure finishing fresh, elegant and long.

The 2021 Beaune 1er Cru Les Teurons wafts from the glass with aromas of sweet red fruit compote, spices and rose petals. Medium to full-bodied, ample and seamless, with melting tannins and a pure, vibrant palate, it concludes with a long, saline finish.

The 2021 Beaune Les Teurons 1er Cru was badly affected by the frost, cropped at 6-7hL/ha, due to it being located on a steep slope. It has an attractive red berry bouquet, very pure with impressive mineralité, hints of peony with time. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins. The 50% whole bunches impart a discrete peppery note, very harmonious with quite a persistent finish. Not to be overlooked, credit to Frédéric Weber and his team. Drink 2025-2042.

This one of the more floral-suffused wines in the range with its hints of violet, rose petal and lavender that add touch of elegance to the very ripe poached plum scents that presently lack a bit of freshness. There is verve and freshness on the palate of the dense, voluminous and punchy flavors that coat the palate with dry extract that also serves to buffer the firm tannins shaping the powerful, serious and mildly warm finale. Note that my predicted range offers the benefit of the doubt that the nose will recover better freshness. Drink from 2032+.

Unfurling in the glass with aromas of blackberries and raspberries mingled with notions of warm spices, rose petals, orange rind and dark chocolate, the 2020 Beaune 1er Cru Les Grèves Vigne de l'Enfant Jesus is medium to full-bodied, ample and concentrated, with a deep core of fruit that's framed by rich, powdery tannins and succulent acids. It's a terrific effort that should land toward the upper end of my score range.

The 2020 Beaune Les Grèves Vigne de L'Enfant Jesus 1er Cru has a lovely, sensual red berry, rose petal and mulberry scented nose that has fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, a little more tension than the Les Tuerons with a saline finish. This is a well crafted Beaune. Drink 2025-2040.

Still pretty closed, this is a concentrated and seriously structured wine for a Beaune 1er Cru, which has clearly been built for the long-term. However, its the pronounced, stony minerality that makes this exciting. Bold and still quite tight finish. From a 3.92-hectare plot in one of Beaune's top sites. From organically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but best from 2024.

This is a free draining soil, but deep enough that it did not dry out during the parched summer. Dark purple black, one of the more sunshine laden bouquets but with a joyous plump fruit on the palate refreshed at the back by a little useful acidity. Good length, no undue heat.

Bouchard has nearly four hectares of this, perhaps the greatest site in the Beaune appellation. On a modest slope with east-southeast exposure in the heart of the terroir, this has produced a sophisticated, elegant wine in 2020, fermenting out to barely 13.5% alcohol with a pH between 3.5–3.6. The fruit is supremely luxurious and lush, yet underscored with plenty of nuance of spice, smoke, earth, and leather. The texture is dense and powerful yet superbly elegant — a triumph. Enough wood to notice surrounds the equally ripe aromas of mocha, black raspberry and spicy poached plum. If the Cuvée Carnot tends to take center stage chez Bouchard, it's the 2020 Volnay 1er Cru Les Taillepieds that's the Volnay to beat to my palate this year. Exhibiting aromas of cherries, raspberries, loamy soil, black truffle and raw cocoa, it's medium to full-bodied, concentrated and elegantly muscular, with terrific depth and mid-palate amplitude, concluding with a long, mineral finish.

The 2020 Volnay Taillepieds 1er Cru has a lovely spicy bouquet with clove and white pepper scents infusing the dark berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy ripe tannins, taut and crisp, quite spicy and grippy towards the finish. Good potential. Drink 2025-2045.

Another black colour with purple rim. The bouquet wants to offer some elegance despite the massive concentration of the vintage. Succulent dark raspberry, a glossy character also on the palate, firmer tannins behind for sure. Medium plus length and the useful acidity which picks out points of red fruit.

Very ripe liqueur-like aromas of various black berries are nuanced by plenty of spice and floral elements. There is excellent underlying tension to the beautifully textured medium weight flavors that also brim with sappy dry extract and minerality, all wrapped in a bitter pit fruit finale that offers impressive persistence. This is definitely atypical but the intrinsic class of a fine Caillerets is still present. Drink from 2032+.

Cropped at a derisory 15 hectoliters per hectare, the quality of Bouchard's 2020 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets Ancienne Cuvée Carnot is some compensation for the lack of quantity. Unfurling in the glass with aromas of dark berries, rose petals, plums, raw cocoa and orange rind, it's medium to full-bodied, layered and velvety, with powdery tannins, lively acids and a long, fragrant finish.

The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, a little chewiness on the entry but there is fine acidity and a cohesive peppery finish. Upfront floral and licorice aromas, but it needs some aeration for the red berries to emerge. A rich and fleshy wine for this appellation that’s associated with silky elegance. Crisp tannins and lively acidity keep this bright. Needs some time to settle down and open up. From a 3.76-hectare plot in this well known 1er Cru. From organically grown grapes. Absolutely black centre to this with a massively concentrated bouquet, thus far hiding the detail. Inky depths. I would like to see this again after racking. The wine is not destabilised on the palate and the concentration is certainly exceptional, fresher at the finish. There is certainly an awful lot of wine here: buy it if you want a wine for 25 years time!

Ripe aromas of red and dark currant, earth and a hint of the sauvage give way to dense, powerful and quite serious broad-shouldered flavors that terminate in an austere but not really rustic finale that flashes excellent minerality and length. The 2020 Le Corton Grand Cru is a worthy successor to the striking 2019 (which I probably underrated last year). Soaring from the glass with aromas of rose petals, orange rind, raspberries, rich soil tones and cinnamon, it's full-bodied, velvety and seamless, with a deep and layered core of fruit, vibrant acids and fine, melting tannins, concluding with a long, saline finish. This emblematic cuvée has always been a solid bottling chez Bouchard, but in the last few years it seems to have attained a whole new level of quality. When I asked Frédéric Weber what might account for this shift, he explained that he picks later and includes more whole bunches in the vinification. Whatever the reason, readers are advised to take note, as I don't think the market has yet factored in quite how good this wine is.

There's nothing shy about this uncompromising expression of the 2020 vintage. Dark, meaty and peppery on the expansive nose, this Corton has imposing structure, but has been beautifully crafted. So well proportioned, in spite of its mighty stature. The crushed-stone minerality builds and builds to a serious crescendo at the finish. From organically grown grapes. The Bouchard 2020 Corton has coped well with the drought. Vinification included 40% whole bunches, slightly higher than the other Côte de Beaune vineyards. Deepish colour with a more crimson edge. The stems show with a slightly smoky nose. A brooding powerhouse but it is also light on its feet with an interesting complex mix of red and black fruit, plus the more open structure from whole bunch.

This magnificent parcel is 3.55ha in a long strip below the wood of Corton and above Clos du Roi and Renards, right on the limestone. The grapes are one-third fermented as whole clusters and then aged in 25% new casks to produce a very aromatic nose with expressive red and black fruits, floral notes, pepper and spice. On the palate the wine is tightly wound, with firm tannins but lots of finesse and a fine acidity that carries this to an impressive finish. Drink 2025 - 2050.

Moderately generous wood and menthol fight somewhat with the exuberantly spicy black cherry liqueur-like aromas that are cut with lovely floral wisps. There is excellent concentration to the bigger-bodied and more powerful flavors that are blessed with ample amounts of sappy dry extract that does a fine job of buffering the firm tannic spine shaping the complex, balanced and hugely long finale. The 2020 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru comes from purchased grapes that Bouchard harvest themselves. It has a fresh black cherry and boysenberry jam scented bouquet, just a touch of warm alcohol here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, quite dense and lightly spiced. It feels quite muscular towards the finish where I would like to see more light amongst the shade. A bit dense and brawny. Drink 2026-2045.

Deep, dark and smoky nose that's still quite closed. Gigantic structure and fantastic cherry fruit on the rich and deeply harmonious palate. Still very youthful, but this gives you the full Gevrey Grand Cru experience, with all the earthy power, spicy complexity and a touch of bitter chocolate. Expansive and creamy finish with very impressive, plush tannins. This was made from bought-in grapes from an almost 1-hectare plot in this cult site. Drink or hold.

Purchased grapes, but from the same plot each year and Bouchard can choose when to harvest, which was 29th August in 2020. Dark colour, 30% whole bunch, a suave intensity of fruit, very backward, not overdone, with a little coconut sweetness alongside the dark raspberry. It is a little too massive to display its quintessential elegance yet, but I think that lies beneath and will come out after racking. There may yet be more of an up-side to my conservative score.

Produced with fruit purchased from the same parcel each year, which is located at the top of the slope just under the tree line. In 2020, the grapes were picked on 29th August and were treated to the customary vinification: half whole clusters, very gentle pump-overs, and ultimately two winters in cask, half new. The result is lighter than this producer's Chambertin, with a bright raspberry and red cherry fruit aromas tinged with floral notes. There is plenty of finesse, although it is lacking perhaps a bit of the density one expects in this appellation. Drink 2025 - 2050.

There is a suggestion of herbal tea on the exuberantly spicy aromas of red and dark raspberry along with a hint of violet. There is a wonderful texture to the classy and beautifully well-detailed middle weight flavors that brim with both minerality and dry extract before culminating in a compact, serious and built-to-age finish. The 2018 Volnay Les Caillerets "Ancienne Cuvée Carnot" 1er Cru comes from Bouchard’s 3.7-hectare monopole. The slope in this part of Beaune is considered the best terroir in the commune, despite the lack of Grand Cru status. In Les Greves, a gentle, southeasterly exposure gives the vines plentiful sunshine during the day, which helps with the development of sugar and phenols in the grapes. This is tempered by cooler evenings, which slow this ripening process and leads to a retention of acidity, making for balanced wines. These wines are among the most respected made in Beaune, rivaled only by the wines made in the tiny neighboring Premier Cru vineyard, Sur les Greves.

Deep dark red black colour with a dark red hue. Very expressive nose with aromas of dark to black cherries, violets, dried clove and hints of anise blooming out of the glass. Some forest floor and spicy cedar notes also chime in. Slightly grainy in its feel with relatively polished tannins for Pommard. Concludes long, deeply fruited and expansive.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.

Plenty of fresh plum, black cherry and a touch of blood orange on the nose of this very satisfying Pommard. Stacks of healthy tannins are already beautifully integrated in the fullish body. In spite of the considerable power, this has a remarkably elegant finish for this appellation. Drink or hold.

Once again there is a coolness to the markedly restrained aromas of airy red and dark pinot fruit, pungent earth and smoke. The middle weight flavors are not as dense or voluminous, but they are definitely stonier and particularly so on the linear and borderline strict finish. This youthfully austere effort is a bit awkward today, but it appears to have the stuffing to fill out in time and my projected range confers the benefit of the doubt in this regard. Drink to 2028+.

Domaine Charles Audoin was formed in 1972 by Charles and his oenologist wife Marie-Francoise, starting with three hectares in Marsannay. Their holding has now grown to around 14 hectares that captures some of the best parcels in Marsannay. Their son Cyril joined his father in 2000, and is now in charge of both vineyard and winemaking activities for the Domaine. Cyril is increasingly focused on vineyard health, to deliver wines with pure varietal expression and a sense of place. They are among the most serious wines from the area, and while juicy and approachable young, have the capacity to age gracefully for many years.

Very ripe, but also very fresh red-cherry nose. Bold and generous, as you expect from Pommard, but with gentle tannins on the medium-to full-bodied palate. Only at the finish do they show a hint of the dryness for which the appellation is renowned, but the texture remains wonderfully velvety.

The 2019 Pommard En Mareau is very promising, wafting from the glass with notes of red berries, plums, dried herbs, spices and raw cocoa. Medium to full-bodied, bright and supple, with melting tannins and a lively core of fruit, much like Audoin's Fixin, this is a cuvée that has been more and more elegantly rendered in recent vintages.

Like the Fixin, this too is aromatically quite cool and restrained with its reticent aromas of herbal tea, red pinot fruit and discreet newly turned earth scents. The relatively suave and rounded medium weight flavors possess a lovely mouthfeel, all wrapped in a saline-inflected and youthfully austere finale. This too is quite good for its level and worth checking out. Drink 2026+.

A really sophisticated wine for this appellation, which is often associated with robust and rustic wines. Full forest berries, generous body and fine tannins, with plenty of wet-earth minerality that drives the very long, velvety finish.

Aromas of raspberries, cassis, rose petals and coniferous forest floor introduce the 2019 Fixin Le Rozier, a medium to full-bodied, bright and perfumed wine that's fine-boned and mineral, with elegantly chalky tannins and tangy acids. It's a lovely example of the appellation.

A cooler and more elegant nose offers up notes of earth and herbal tea on the red cherry, raspberry and soft sauvage nuances. There is very solid volume to the well-defined medium weight flavors that are notably more mineral-driven on the mildly chalky, austere and nicely long finish that is actually fairly refined. The 2018 Fixin Le Rozier reveals notes of red berries, peonies and coniferous forest floor, followed by a medium to full-bodied, fine-boned and lively palate. Displaying lovely intensity and cut, this is a real success.

A discreet whiff of herbal tea can be found on the fresh red cherry and iron-inflected earth scents. The impressive vibrant, delicious and well-detailed flavors exude a subtle minerality before terminating in a cherry lozenge-tinged finish.

A very ripe nose is comprised by notes of both red and dark currant along with a background hint of a kind of reduction that the Burgundians refer to as bourgeon de cassis. There is fine freshness and verve to the moderately dense, powerful, and muscular larger-scaled flavors that coat the palate with sappy dry extract before concluding in a dusty, austere, and firm finale. This is also relatively supple and opulent that will need to develop depth over the course of its aging curve. Drink 2029+.

The 2019 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 1er Cru was bottled in June and July ‘21. Very perfumed and floral scents on the nose, dark cherries, bergamot, damp earth and touches of clove, later hints of violet and blood orange (traits that I observed out of barrel). This is nicely detailed. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent tannins, fine acidity, lightly spiced with a classy espresso-tinged finish that lingers in the mouth. Excellent. Drink 2025-2050.

The colour has evolved more than the 2018. Interesting complex nose, a mix of the warmer pinot style, riper and more supple than the 2018, you could almost consider drinking this until you come to the end of the palate where the density builds. A light menthol touch with some cinnamon. Enough acidity at the back, tannins hidden by the fruit, almost saline at the finish. Ultimately more character than the ’18 though with a slightly riper fruit profile.

A very ripe yet agreeably fresh nose reflects notes of blue berry, plum liqueur and violet that are cut with spice, menthol and earth hints. The exceptionally rich and impressively full-bodied flavors evidence a taut muscularity, all wrapped in an overtly powerful and lingering finish that is naturally sweet. As one would reasonably expect this is quite firm; indeed it's borderline rustic. Drink from 2032+.

The 2017 Bonnes Mares Grand Cru is also unusually saturated in hue this year, though Millet reports having done no more pigeage than usual. Offering up aromas of dark cherries, wild berries, cassis, dark chocolate, peony and caramelized orange rind, the wine is medium to full-bodied, ample and elegantly fine boned, with chalky structuring tannins, a pure core of fruit and a long, fragrant finish. Despite its disconcertingly deep hue this is one of the most supple, elegant renditions of the de Vogüé Bonnes Mares in the last decade.

The 2017 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has a complex bouquet that is slightly more Musigny in personality than I expected. There is mainly dark fruit here, mixed with potpourri and incense and becoming more flamboyant as it aerates in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, and quite compact in style because, as François Millet noted, these 2017s are beginning to close down. But there is certainly good density here, and an enticing tensile finish. Drink 2024-2048.

The de Vogüé Bonnes Mares comes from a sizeable 2.7ha on red clay soils and is always the most structured and ‘masculine’ of the domaine's wines. It's dark and intense, with violet and blueberry scents, a plush, concentrated palate, stylish 35% new wood and the depth and concentration to age. Rich and very appealing. Drink 2026 - 2037.

Somewhat surprisingly this is even more floral with its cool and ultra-fresh nose of various dark berries, sandalwood and a lovely array of spices. I very much like the seductive texture of the big-bodied flavors that aren't quite as dense or structured as those of the Suchots but they're notably finer, all wrapped in a dusty, palate coating and gorgeously long finish. Excellent.

Deep bright red-ruby. Blackberry, licorice and violet aromas are sharpened by the remaining malic acidity. Juicy, precise and imploded, with the wine's chiseled aspect no doubt accentuated by the malic acidity. Firm tannins saturate the palate on the very long finish.

A ripe but cool and restrained nose features relatively elegant violet and rose petal aromas as well as those of earthy red cherry liqueur and spice nuances. Here too there is terrific concentration to the intense, palate staining and perceptively muscular flavors that again coat the mouth with dry extract while offering a superbly persistent finish that is blatantly structured but not particularly austere; indeed this could even be approached young. Healthy dark red with ruby tones. Black cherry and licorice aromas are lifted by a violet topnote. Tight and minty on entry, then a bit more pliant in the middle, conveying an impression of medicinal reserve to its dark flavors of black cherry, spices and minerals. Finishes with substantial tooth- and tongue-dusting tannins. This wine also had a late malo and comes off as very backward today, in need of more élevage to gain in flesh and sweetness.

20% whole bunch vinification from Herbues, Lavières and Allots, one third of each. Dense black centre, nutty walnut nose, very concentrated. Older vines on the Vosne side of the appellation. Really intense black with purple rim. Lush luxuriant cherries, sun-dried but sumptuous. There is a huge weight of fruit with good acidity, and a very long finish in this lush style. No more than 14% alcohol. This is still a touch too lush for my personal preference, but I think it will make a lot of friends.

An obsession with a fickle varietal.

Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential.
